BACKGROUND: Long-hair follicular unit excision (LHF) is gaining popularity, especially for hairline restoration, because it helps avoid hair removal in the donor area and provides better immediate postoperative results. AIMS: This study aimed to assess the postoperative clinical outcomes of LHF for hairline restoration. PATIENTS/METHODS: Data from 248 patients (223 women and 25 men) who underwent hairline restoration with LHF between September 2018 and June 2022 were analyzed, and they were followed up immediately and 9 months postoperatively. The complications and survival rate of long-hair grafts were assessed. Patient postoperative satisfaction was assessed using a 5-Point Likert Scale. The Generic Quality of Life Inventory-74 (GQOLI-74) assessed the quality of the postoperative life. RESULTS: The planned extraction density was set at 15-25 FU/cm2. The mean number of total extracted hair grafts, transection rate in the extraction area, and extraction time were 1970 ± 124 FU, 3.9 ± 0.2%, and 3.2 ± 0.8 h, respectively. The hairline implantation density was set at 50-70 FU/cm2. The mean number of total transplanted hair grafts was 2031 ± 371 FU; the implant time was 3.8 ± 1.9 h. No serious complications occurred within 7 days postoperatively. The mean graft survival rate was 93.1 ± 1.3% at 9 months postoperatively. All patients were satisfied with the immediate postoperative results, and most were satisfied with the 9-month outcomes (mean overall satisfaction score: 4.7). The scores of physical function, psychological function, social function and material life function after operation were higher than those before operation (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: Hairline restoration with LHF could enhance the cosmetic outcomes and be widely used in clinical practice.

The human head lice is a cosmopolitan ectoparasite that causes pediculosis. The main way of spreading lice is through direct head-to-head contact. It is popular knowledge that some individuals are more susceptible to contracting head lice than others. Reports of individuals who have never been affected by the disease are common, even living in the same environment and under the same conditions as people who regularly have lice infestations. Previous research has been carried out on the risk of this infection associated with different human factors like gender or age. However, studies on the influence of the individual hair characteristics are scarce. The objective of the study was to analyze the pediculosis risk using geographical location, gender, age and individual hair characteristics as variables. Pediculosis was diagnosed through the detection of living lice in the hair. This cross-sectional school-based epidemiological study was conducted in 310 schoolchildren aged 1 to 13 years of schools in 4 municipalities situated in the State of Paraná, Brazil. The prevalence of head louse infection in primary school students was 49.35 %. The Odds Ratio of presence of pediculosis (OR) was estimated using multivariate logistic regression analysis. The results obtained indicate that hair length and thickness increase the risk of infection. Furthermore, the inclusion of hair color, hair shape, kind of hair-scale as covariates increases the risk of pediculosis, indicating that these variables partly explain this susceptibility and that pediculosis is independent of gender. A smaller hair diameter may favor insect fixation to the hair in the nymphal phases. These results may explain why girls are a greater risk as they let their hair grow for cultural reasons, i.e., being of female gender is an agglutinating variable. The conclusions drawn may explain the discrepancies obtained in previous analyses.

Background: Current no-shave long hair-follicular unit excision (LH-FUE) techniques employ recesses (slots, notches, or grooves) in punch tips to reduce the long-hair shaft break rate (SBR) and graft transection rate (GTR). However, these methods demand advanced skills and extended procedure time. Objective: We aimed to evaluate a skin-responsive FUE technique without the use of recess-tipped punches, accommodating diverse hair and skin types in LH-FUE procedures. Methods and Materials: We retrospectively analyzed patients who underwent this technique using a UGraft Zeus device at five multinational clinics (Mexico, Colombia, India, United States, and Türkiye) from August 9, 2021, to April 11, 2023. Donor zones were pre-operatively graded for expected difficulty using the Sanusi FUE Scoring (SFS) Scale, ranging from class I (low difficulty) to V (high difficulty). Results: Among 152 patients (mean age, 46 years; 146 straight-wavy, 6 curly-coiled hair), most (n=107) were class I donors. The GTR ranged 2.2%-4.3%, and was highest in class IV donors and those with thick-firm scalps. The SBR was 12.2%, and the average graft excision rate (GER; speed) was 440 grafts/h. Only 19G and 18G punches were used. All patients were satisfied with the procedure, with 57.4% reporting that they were "very happy". Surgeon willingness to perform no-shave LH-FUE significantly increased from 1.25 to 4.20 (on a scale of 1-5) after adopting this device. SFS class, skin thickness, and firmness, more than hair curliness, influenced the GTR, SBR, torque, and punch movement duration. Conclusion: Our findings reveal consistent success in conducting no-shave LH-FUE using this skin-responsive device across diverse patients. Notably, success was achieved without recess-tipped punches, resulting in low GTR and SBR, along with a high GER and increased patient satisfaction. These outcomes suggest enhanced procedure speed and ease of use, contributing to a greater willingness among surgeons to adopt this technique.

BACKGROUND: Rabbits are well-domesticated animals. As a crucial economic animal, rabbit has been successfully bred into wool-use, meat-use and fur-use breeds. Hair length is one of the most economically important traits affecting profitability in wool rabbits. In this study, to identify selection signatures with the long-hair trait, whole-genomic resequencing of long-haired rabbits (Angora rabbits) and short-haired rabbits (Rex and New Zealand rabbits) was performed. RESULTS: By genome-wide selective sweeping analysis based on population comparison, we identified a total of 5.85 Mb regions (containing 174 candidate genes) with strong selection signals. Six of these genes (Dusp1, Ihh, Fam134a, Map3k1, Spata16, and Fgf5) were enriched in the MAPK signalling and Hedgehog signalling pathways, both of which are closely associated with hair growth regulation. Among these genes, Fgf5 encodes the FGF5 protein, which is a well-established regulator of hair growth. There was a nonsynonymous nucleotide substitution (T19234C) in the Fgf5 gene. At this locus, the C allele was present in all of the tested Angora rabbits, while the T allele was dominant in New Zealand and Rex rabbits. We further confirmed that the C allele was conserved in Angora rabbits by screening an additional 135 rabbits. Moreover, the results of functional predictions and co-immunoprecipitation revealed that the T19234C mutation impaired the binding capacity of FGF5 to its receptor FGFR1. CONCLUSIONS: We discovered that the homozygous missense mutation T19234C within Fgf5 might contribute to the long-hair trait of Angora rabbits by reducing its receptor binding capacity. This finding will provide new insights into the genetic basis underlying the genetic improvement of Angora rabbits and benefit the improvement of rabbit breeding in the future.

The image of an ideal woman often involves her having long, silky hair. However, the dearth of psychological research on hair limits the understanding of how women's hair functions in romantic relationships. While some scholars have found that the appearance of women's hair signals reproductive potential to men, whether women's hair may affect their sexual lives remains unknown. To investigate the function of hair in romantic relationships, we tested whether women's hair quality and length are associated with sexual frequency in marital dyads. We conducted a paid online survey involving 204 heterosexual marital dyads. The results indicated that women with long and high-quality hair experienced more frequent sexual intercourse with their spouse, as it heightened their husband's perception of their attractiveness and, consequently, intensified their husband's sexual desire toward them. Neither men's hair length nor quality was associated with sexual frequency. Implications of the study are further discussed.

PURPOSE: A challenge in follicular unit excision (FUE) is the lack of a single device that can adequately meet the requirements of a range of patient donor variables, such as hair curliness, race, body and head hair locations, and non-shaven short- and long-hair FUE. This study aimed to describe a novel FUE device developed based on skin responsiveness to serve as a single all-purpose FUE donor harvester. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We describe an all-purpose FUE device that consists of an all-purpose punch and a functionally complementing punch driver. The mechanism of action and method of use are reported. Several patients with a diversity of FUE challenges for three experienced FUE practitioners using the novel device are presented using photos and videos. The practitioners also reported their comparative experiences with using prior FUE systems in similar situations. RESULTS: The novel device demonstrated success in a variety of FUE scenarios without requiring specialized provider skills. The device responds to changing skin firmness and thickness, which are the primary causes of inconsistent performance in FUE devices between patients and within patients from one body/head area to another. It also minimized challenges of unpredictable hair curliness and angles by its innate ability to self-navigate the subsurface course of hair follicles, to which the FUE practitioner is typically blinded. CONCLUSION: We describe a novel FUE device that overcomes the challenges of previous FUE technologies and has potential applicability to a diverse range of FUE scenarios. Our experience suggests that further validation is warranted.

Several FGF5 mutations are associated with hair length variation in many domestic animals, including New World camelids. The dromedary was investigated in the present study with breeds exhibiting marked variations in hair length. This study aimed to: (1) identify the molecular variation(s) in the three exons of FGF5 of a diverse group of breeds (Mejaheem, Shaele, Sofor, Waddah and Omani; n = 28); (2) examine the association of the identified variants with hair length; (3) validate the association via genotyping the polymorphism in a large population of diverse camels (n = 113); and (4) test the segregation of the identified variant with hair length in a pedigree. A non-synonymous mutation (c.779 C > T) was identified that changes the amino acid from proline to leucine and was found to be associated with different hair length in dromedaries. The variants at c.779 displayed a co-dominance mode of inheritance and three hair length phenotypes: short (C/C), intermediate (C/T) and long (T/T). Across the examined dromedary breeds, both alleles were present, which is probably due to the breeders' preference for an intermediate hair length. When compared with other camelids, the identified variant was found exclusively in dromedaries with the ancestral allele at c.779 being 'C'. This study constitutes the first thorough exploration of the FGF5 gene in dromedaries.

The technique of follicular unit excision for harvesting grafts for hair transplantation procedures has become very popular. This technique relies on the use of small punches to remove viable grafts. Many different punch shapes have been developed to accommodate the varying nature of skin and hair characteristics, resulting in hair transplant surgeons requiring a variety of punches to suit a wide range of patients, which can be overwhelming to the beginner when trying to decide on the optimal choice of a punch to suit a particular skin characteristic. We describe a novel multipurpose ring punch that can be used on patients with a variety of skin and hair characteristics, as well as for shaved and long hair FUE. Features of this punch include an octagonal ring that protrudes from the outer wall of the punch and functions to control the punch's trajectory into the deeper dermis during incision. Additionally, this punch has a dull, notched edge which allows for use in long hair and shaved FUE without sacrificing ease of incision through the epidermis. This punch is the first of its kind to have this breadth of versatility with a one-size-fits-all design.

BACKGROUND: Follicular unit excision (FUE) is a popular hair transplant technique, but requires shaving the donor area. This is a deterrent for some patients wishing to keep their hair transplant discreet. The new long hair FUE technique avoids shaving the donor area, which appeals to a wider patient population; however, it has a reputation of being technically challenging and slow. AIMS: We review the tools and techniques developed for long hair FUE and present our experience using the Trivellini Long Hair System and Long Hair punch. DISCUSSION: With the new advances in tools and techniques for long hair FUE, this method is gaining momentum and has the potential to be the next trend in the hair transplant industry. There are a few different punch designs marketed specifically for long hair FUE (window/slotted, Trivellini Long Hair, and bi-pronged). Although this technique is slower to perform than shaven FUE, graft survival and final outcome are comparable. CONCLUSIONS: Innovations in technology have made the long hair FUE technique more accessible to hair transplant surgeons. It is important for hair restoration surgeons to keep knowledgeable about this technique in order to maintain a competitive business.

Hair growth and morphology are generally regulated by the hair cycle in mammals. Fibroblast Growth Factor 5 (FGF5), which is a hair cycle regulator, has a role in regulating the hair cycle during the transition from the anagen phase to the catagen phase, and a hereditary long hair phenotype has been widely reported when FGF5 is mutated in humans and other species. However, there has been no such report in rabbits. Thus, the first exon of rabbit FGF5 was disrupted by the CRISPR/Cas9 system, and the phenotype of FGF5-/- rabbits was characterized while using hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining, immunohistochemistry, quantitative PCR, scanning electron microscopy, and western blotting. The results showed a significant and systemic long hair phenotype in the FGF5-/- rabbits, which indicated that FGF5 is a negative regulator of hair growth. In addition, a decreased diameter of the fiber and a higher area proportion of hair follicle clusters were determined in FGF5-/- rabbits as compared with the WT rabbits. Further investigation verified that prolonging the anagen phase in rabbits, with decreased BMP2/4 pathway signaling and increased VERSICAN pathway signaling, caused the systemic long hair phenotype. Taken together, these results indicate a systemic long hair phenotype by prolonging anagen in FGF5-/- rabbits, which could be widely used for Fur production and an ideal model for studying the mechanism of long hair in the future.
