RESUMO

This study investigated a disease outbreak characterized by caligid copepod infestations and subsequent secondary bacterial infections in European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) cultivated at a private facility in the Deeba Triangle region of Egypt. Moribund fish displayed brown spots on the skin, tongue, and gills, along with lethargy and excess mucus. The fish suffered severe infections, exhibiting external hemorrhages, ulcers, and ascites. The fish had pale, enlarged livers with hemorrhaging. Comprehensive parasitological, bacteriological, molecular, immunity and histopathological analyses were conducted to identify the etiological agents and pathological changes. Caligid copepod infestation was observed in wet mounts from the buccal and branchial cavities of all examined fish, and the caligids were identified as Caligus clemensi through COI gene sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. Vibrio alginolyticus was confirmed as a secondary bacterial infection through biochemical tests, recA gene sequencing, and phylogenetic analyses. Antibiotic susceptibility testing revealed resistance to ß-lactams, aminoglycosides, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole in V. alginolyticus isolates. Upregulation of the inflammatory marker IL-1ß in gill and skin tissues indicated a robust cell-mediated immune response against the pathogens. Histopathological examination revealed severe tissue damage, hyperplasia, hemorrhage, and congestion in the gills, along with hepatocellular degeneration and steatosis in the liver, providing initial insights into this outbreak. A comprehensive therapeutic regimen was implemented, comprising prolonged hydrogen peroxide immersion baths, followed by the application of the nature-identical plant-based compound Lice-less and probiotic Sanolife Pro-W supplementation. This integrated approach effectively eliminated C. clemensi infestations, controlled secondary bacterial infections, and restored fish health, reducing morbidity and mortality rates to minimal levels.

In recent years, the presence and migration of PAEs in packaging materials and consumer products has become a serious concern. Based on this concern, the aim of our study is to determine the possible migration potential and speed of PAEs in benthic fish stored in vacuum packaging, as well as to monitor the storage time and type as well as polyethylene (PE) polymer detection.As a result of the analysis performed by µ-Raman spectroscopy, 1 microplastic (MP) of 6 µm in size was determined on the 30th day of storage in whiting fish muscle and the polymer type was found to be Polyethylene (PE) (low density polyethylene: LDPE). Depending on the storage time of the packaging used in the vacuum packaging process, it has been determined that its chemical composition is affected by temperature and different types of polymers are formed. 10 types of PAEs were identified in the packaging material and stored flesh fish: DIBP, DBP, DPENP, DHEXP, BBP, DEHP, DCHP, DNOP, DINP and DDP. While the most dominant PAEs in the packaging material were determined as DEHP, the most dominant PAEs in fish meat were recorded as BBP and the lowest as DMP. The findings provide a motivating model for monitoring the presence and migration of PAEs in foods, while filling an important gap in maintaining a safe food chain.

Introduction: Aeromonas hydrophila and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are potent bacterial pathogens posing major hazards to human health via consuming fish harboring these pathogens or by cross-contamination beyond the contaminated environment. The aim of this study was to determine risk variables associated with the presence of certain pathogenic bacteria from Mugil cephalus fish in retail markets in Egypt. The virulence genes of A. hydrophila and S. aureus were also studied. Furthermore, the antibiotic sensitivity and multidrug resistance of the microorganisms were evaluated. Methods: In a cross-sectional investigation, 370 samples were collected from mullet skin and muscle samples, washing water, fish handlers, knives, and chopping boards. Furthermore, fish handlers' public health implications were assessed via their response to a descriptive questionnaire. Results: S. aureus and Aeromonas species dominated the investigated samples with percentages of 26.76% and 30.81%, respectively. Furthermore, A. hydrophila and MRSA were the predominant recovered bacterial pathogens among washing water and knives (53.85% and 46.66%, respectively). The virulence markers aerA and hlyA were found in 90.7% and 46.5% of A. hydrophila isolates, respectively. Moreover, the virulence genes nuc and mec were prevalent in 80% and 60% of S. aureus isolates, respectively. Antimicrobial susceptibility results revealed that all A. hydrophila isolates were resistant to amoxicillin and all MRSA isolates were resistant to amoxicillin and ampicillin. Remarkably, multiple drug resistance (MDR) patterns were detected in high proportions in A. hydrophila (88.37%) and MRSA (100%) isolates. The prevalence of Aeromonas spp. and S. aureus had a positive significant correlation with the frequency of handwashing and use of sanitizer in cleaning of instruments. MRSA showed the highest significant prevalence rate in the oldest age category. Conclusion: The pathogenic bacteria recovered in this study were virulent and had a significant correlation with risk factors associated with improper fish handling. Furthermore, a high frequency of MDR was detected in these pathogenic bacteria, posing a significant risk to food safety and public health.

The Squaretail mullet, Ellochelon vaigiensis, is a commercial fish species distributed throughout the Indo-Pacific region. This species tolerates wide variations in salinity, having been reported from both freshwater and marine habitats. Although economically significant, there is little information on its reproduction, especially in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta (VMD), where it is heavily extracted. Our study elucidates the breeding pattern, seasonality, first length at maturity, as well as potential and relative fecundity of this species. Fish specimens were collected by trawl nets from November 2020 to October 2021 at four estuarine sites within the VMD. We found this species to be a synchronous spawner, with peaks in reproductive activity from June to September. In the populations we surveyed, there was significant dominance of males (1.26:1.00) based on 942 fish samples (526 males and 416 females). The length at 50% maturity for females was significantly higher than for males at all sites and ranged from 10.6 to 19.3 cm. The diameter of the eggs examined for this species exhibited slight variation, from 0.43 to 0.54 mm. The potential fecundity ranged from 246,254 ± 35,878 to 411,970 ± 54,370 eggs, corresponding to female length and weight of 26.7-32.6 cm and 102.97-234.19 g, respectively. Relative fecundity values were highest at Thanh Phu, Ben Tre (6388 ± 605 eggs), and Dong Hai, Bac Lieu (6461 ± 637 eggs), followed by Tran De, Soc Trang (4729 ± 408), and were found to be lowest at Duyen Hai, Tra Vinh (3117 ± 223 eggs). Information on reproductive behavior in this species has far-reaching impacts on sustainable extractions, stock conservation, and aquaculture.

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) are a suite of harmful chemicals (hereafter collectively referred to as 'dioxins'), and their emission into aquatic habitats leads to persistent contamination of sediments, aquatic food-webs, and seafoods. Quantifying contaminant levels in seafood species is important for the ongoing management of exposure risk by fishers, particularly after any remediation actions. We present dioxin concentrations in four seafood species (Yellowfin Bream Acanthopagrus australis, Sea Mullet Mugil cephalus, Eastern School Prawn Metapenaeus macleayi, and Eastern King Prawn Penaeus plebejus) in a recreationally fished estuary, in relation to a contaminated site that has undergone a remediation process, partially removing contaminated sediments (Homebush Bay, Port Jackson, New South Wales, Australia). Dioxin concentrations in these species were measured before (2005/6) and after (2015/16) remediation at a range of locations in and around the remediated site. Dioxin concentrations and congener profiles differed substantially among taxa, and concentrations were frequently higher than Australian screening criteria. The two prawn species showed evidence of a decline in dioxin concentrations after remediation, but the fish species only showed a declining dioxin concentration with distance from the contaminated site (not between periods). There were some minor changes in the congener profile for some species following remediation. While there was evidence for greatly reduced dioxin concentrations in prawn species following remediation, the complex patterns for fish were likely affected by environmental changes, species-specific and temporal changes in lipid content, and animal movement patterns. Future monitoring may aid interpretation of the patterns and modelling of exposure risk associated with seafood consumption into the future.

The flathead gray mullet (Mugil cephalus L.) is a cosmopolitan fish that lives in warm and temperate zones over 42°N-42°S. It is a key fish species for industrial fishing off coastal Taiwan. Gray mullets enter the coastal waters of the southeastern Taiwan Strait (22°N-25°N) to spawn in winter and feed in the coastal and tidal waters of China (25°N-30°N). From 1986 to 2010, the annual catch of gray mullet decreased substantially and remained low. Although the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and El Niño-Southern Oscillation are recognized to affect gray mullet migration, the increase in sea surface temperature may be the main cause of the aforementioned decrease. We explored how weather changes affect fishing conditions and patterns at the gray mullet fishing grounds in Taiwan's coastal areas. Because of the decrease in gray mullet catches, the most common method for catching gray mullet in Taiwan's coastal areas between 1990 and 2010 was the use of drift or trawl nets instead of two-boat purse-seiner fleets. Since 2012, purse-seiner fleets have become the most common method for catching gray mullet. This trend indicates that the local fishing industry is adapting to changing environmental conditions.

In this study, the addition of oregano oil chitosan nanoparticles (OEO-CSNPs) was conducted to enhance the comprehensive properties of gelatin films (GA), and the optimal addition ratio of nanoparticles was determined for its application in the preservation of mullet. Oregano oil chitosan nanoparticles were organically combined with gelatin at different concentrations (0%, 2%, 4%, 6% and 8%) to obtain oregano oil-chitosan nanoparticle-GA-based composite films (G/OEO-CSNPs), and thereafter G/OEO-CSNPs were characterized and investigated for their preservative effects on mullet. Subsequent analysis revealed that OEO-CSNPs were uniformly dispersed in the GA matrix, and that G/OEO-CSNPs had significantly improved mechanical ability, UV-visible light blocking performance and thermal stability. Furthermore, the nanoparticles exhibited excellent antioxidant and antibacterial properties, and they improved the films' suitability as edible packaging. The attributes of the G/OEO-CSNPs were optimized, the films had the strongest radical scavenging and lowest water solubility, and electron microscopy also showed nanoparticle penetration into the polymer when the concentration of OEO-CSNPs was 6% (thickness = 0.092 ± 0.001, TS = 47.62 ± 0.37, E = 4.06 ± 0.17, water solubility = 48.00 ± 1.11). Furthermore, the GA-based composite film containing 6% OEO-CSNPs was able to inhibit microbial growth, slow fat decomposition and protein oxidation, reduce endogenous enzyme activity, and delay the spoilage of mullet during the refrigeration process, all of which indicate its excellent potential for meat preservation application.

Ocean warming is associated with the tropicalization of fish towards higher latitudes. However, the influence of global climatic phenomena like the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and its warm (El Niño) and cold (La Niña) phases on tropicalization has been overlooked. Understanding the combined effects of global climatic forces together with local variability on the distribution and abundance of tropical fish is essential for building more accurate predictive models of species on the move. This is particularly important in regions where ENSO-related impacts are known to be major drivers of ecosystem change, and is compounded by predictions that El Niño is becoming more frequent and intense under current ocean warming. In this study, we used long-term time series of monthly standardized sampling (August 1996 to February 2020) to investigate how ocean warming, ENSO and local environmental variability influence the abundance of an estuarine dependent tropical fish species (white mullet Mugil curema) at subtropical latitudes in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Our work revealed a significant increasing trend in surface water temperature in shallow waters (<1.5 m) at estuarine and marine sites. However, against our initial expectation, we did not observe an increasing trend in the abundance of this tropical mullet species. Generalized Additive Models revealed complex, non-linear relationships between species abundance and environmental factors operating at large (ENSO's warm and cold phases), regional (freshwater discharge in the coastal lagoon's drainage basin) and local (temperature and salinity) scales across the estuarine marine gradient. These results demonstrate that fish responses to global climate change can be complex and multifaceted. More specifically, our findings suggested that the interaction among global and local driving forces dampen the expected effect of tropicalization for this mullet species in a subtropical seascape.

In this study, we optimized a simple method of cryopreservation for Mugil cephalus sperm based on post-thaw motility and viability. A series of experiments were conducted by changing the extender, cryoprotectant and freezing height above the liquid nitrogen (LN) surface. First, we carried out the cryopreservation using the extender V2E and cryoprotective agents (CPAs) namely, propylene glycol (PG), methanol (MeOH), glycerol (GLY), ethylene glycol (EG), dimethylsulfoxide (Me2SO) and dimethylacetamide (DMA) at a final concentration of 5% and 10%. We found that 10% of GLY, EG and Me2SO were more suitable compared to other CPAs. Then, different freezing heights (6, 8, 10 and 12 cm) above the LN surface were experimented with extender V2E and optimized CPAs. Then, 0.3 M of glucose, sucrose and trehalose were tested as extender along with optimized CPAs and freezing height. Additionally, the effect of fast-rate freezing and storage days (7, 30 and 180) on post-thaw sperm quality was documented using the factors optimized in earlier experiments. For all experiments, the fresh sperm was diluted at a ratio of 1:1 with cryomedium (CPA + extender), loaded into cryovials (2.0 mL) and frozen. The cryopreserved sperm was thawed at 30 °C for 90-120 s and their quality was evaluated. Among the experimented factors, sperm diluted in cryomedium (0.3 M glucose + 10% EG) and frozen at 4 cm above the LN surface registered significantly (P < 0.05) highest post-thaw motility (73 ± 2%) and (71 ± 1%) viability. Fast-rate freezing has resulted in lower (about 30%) post-thaw motility and viability of sperm. The storage days (7, 30 and 180) did not have a significant effect on post-thaw sperm quality. Overall results show that using the factors optimized through this study, high-quality sperm can be obtained after cryopreservation.

There are increasing evidences that the biodilution effect can significantly reduce the biomagnification of mercury (Hg) in fish. The significant antagonism of selenium (Se) -Hg may have a potential diluting effect on Hg in fish; however, there is still lack of knowledge on such effect. To reveal the Se-Hg interaction and its role in controlling the biodilution effect of Hg, we investigated levels of Hg and Se in the muscle and liver of redlip mullet from Jiaozhou Bay, China, an urbanized semi-enclosed bay highly impacted by human activities. In general, Hg levels in fish muscle were significantly negatively correlated to the levels of Se in the liver and fish size for fish with a size of < 200 mm, indicating that the antagonistic effect of Se on Hg increased with fish growth. This relationship was not significant for fish with a size of > 200 mm, possibly because the normal metabolism of Hg in muscle was hindered by homeostatic regulation or physiological activities such as gonadal development in vivo. Furthermore, the molar ratio of Se in the liver/Hg in the muscle was significantly increasing with Se/Hg in the liver, suggesting that the liver may be the key organ involved in Se-Hg antagonism. Moreover, both ratios continued to decrease with increasing fish size, implying that the antagonistic effect weakens with fish growth. These results indicate that Hg sequestration by liver may be a key mechanism of Se-Hg antagonism in fish and function as a driver for the biodilution effect of Hg, especially at a size of < 200 mm. These findings are further supported by the established linear model of Se-Hg antagonism at different developmental stages.

This study investigated seasonal presence of microplastic (MP) in gastrointestinal tracts of red mullet (Mullus barbatus) sampled from the Southeast Black Sea Region. A total of 335 MPs were detected in 120 individuals. While the most MP was observed in the winter and autumn seasons, quite few MPs were found in the summer and spring seasons. MP size did not show significant difference among seasons. While all of the MPs in the autumn and spring and most of the MPs in the winter were fiber-shaped, most of the MPs in the summer were fragments. The most observed MP color for all seasons was white. While polymer structures did not show much variation in spring and summer, six different polymers were determined for both autumn and winter. In general, less MPs were detected during fishing ban period (summer) and the characteristic properties of the detected MPs suggest a MP pollution in the region due to intense fishing activities.

Every day the consumer must choose a food product rather than others based on its quality; for fishery products the main quality parameter is freshness. Implementation of the Quality Index Method (QIM) in the fish industry provides information on fish quality; therefore, it is important for effective quality and process management in the production of high-quality fish products. The present study aims to validate the shelflife study of fresh red mullet (Mullus barbatus) stored in ice previously presented by Özyurt in 2009 through Torry scheme in cooked filet and microbiological evaluation. Next, this revised scheme was applied to determine the shelf-life. It included seven descriptors and varies from 0 to 15 points. The use of a modified QIM scheme showed a good correlation between the quality index and days of storage time, with a R2 value of 0.9698. In fact, all the subjects examined reached the end of their commercial life, or the day of sensory rejection, in 9-10 days with a Quality Index of 13.83.

The ingestion of synthetic microfibers, the most prevalent type of microplastics in marine environments, and natural fibers was assessed in Engraulis engrasicolus and Mullus barbatus, two commercially important fish species in the Mediterranean Sea. Microfibers were isolated from the fish gastrointestinal tract using a 10% potassium hydroxide solution. For the microfiber characterization, the evaluation of specific morphological features using a light microscope, coupled with the Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) analysis of a subsample of isolated particles, was applied. The preliminary results showed the occurrence of microfibers in 53 and 60% of European anchovy and Red mullet, respectively. A mean of 6.9 microfibers/individual was detected in anchovies, while on average Red mullet samples contained 9.2 microfibers/individual. The most common colors of fibers in both species were black, blue, and transparent. Visual characterization of fibers allowed the classification of 40% of the items as synthetic microfibers. FTIR spectroscopy confirmed the visual classification by fiber morphology. Microfibers were made of different typologies of polymers, represented by cellulose, cotton, and polyester. These findings confirm as the wide distribution of fibrous microplastics, and natural microfibers may impact both pelagic and deep-sea trophic webs. Despite the presence of microfibers in fish species poses a potential risk to human health, the literature is scarce regarding studies on the uptake by commercial marine fish mostly due to methodological issues. The visual characterization, corroborated by spectroscopic techniques, may be useful to differentiate synthetic and natural fibers, representing a fast and easy method to assess fibrous microplastic pollution in commercially important fish species.

Fish freshness and quality can be measured through several indices that can be both chemical and physical. The storage temperature and the time that elapses following the catching of the fish are fundamental parameters that define and influence both the degree of freshness and nutritional quality. Moreover, they particularly effect the kind of fish we considered. In this research, it was observed how different temperatures of storage and shelf-life (+4 °C and 0 °C) may affect the metabolic profile of red mullet (Mullus barbatus) and bogue (Boops boops) fish samples over time, specifically observing the alteration of freshness and quality. In particular, a High-Resolution Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (HR-NMR)-based metabolomics approach was applied to study the metabolic profile changes that occur in fish spoilage. The HR-NMR spectroscopy data were useful for calculating a kinetic model that was able to predict the evolution of different compounds related to fish freshness, such as trimethylamine (TMA-N) and adenosine-5'-triphosphate (ATP) catabolites for the K-index. Furthermore, NMR in combination with chemometrics allowed us to estimate a further kinetic model able to represent the spoilage evolution by considering the entire metabolome. In this way, it was also possible to detect further biomarkers characterizing the freshness and quality status of both red mullets and bogues.

In the present study, we identified and characterized 22 strains of V. anguillarum from 145 samples of mullets (Mugill cephallus) cultured in several fish farms in South Korea. They were subjected to pathogenicity tests, antimicrobial susceptibility test, and broth dilution test to detect virulence markers, antimicrobial resistance, and heavy metal resistance properties. All the isolates showed amylase and caseinase activity, followed by gelatinase (90.9%), DNase (45.5%), and hemolysis activities (α = 81.1% and ß = 18.2%). The PCR assay revealed that isolates were positive for VAC, ctxAB, AtoxR, tdh, tlh, trh, Vfh, hupO, VPI, and FtoxR virulence genes at different percentages. All the isolates showed multi-drug resistance properties (MAR index ≥ 0.2), while 100% of the isolates were resistant to oxacillin, ticarcillin, streptomycin, and ciprofloxacin. Antimicrobial resistance genes, qnrS (95.5%), qnrB (86.4%), and StrAB (27.3%), were reported. In addition, 40.9% of the isolates were cadmium-tolerant, with the presence of CzcA (86.4%) heavy metal resistance gene. The results revealed potential pathogenicity associated with V. anguillarum in aquaculture and potential health risk associated with consumer health.

Galectins are a family of lectins that are widely distributed ß-galactoside-binding proteins identified in diverse organisms. Galectin family have appeared as pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) responsible for initiating and controlling the innate immunity. The present study aimed to study the binding ability and potential role in PRRs of galectin-related protein B-like (LhGal B-like) from redlip mullet (Liza haematocheila) involved in the host immune responses. We constructed a cDNA library of redlip mullet and identified the LhGal B-like sequence. By sequence analysis and multiple sequence alignment, we revealed that LhGal B-like contains a conserved carbohydrate recognition domain (CRD) and consists of 135 amino acids with a predicted molecular weight of 16.07 kDa. In addition, pairwise comparison results showed that LhGal B-like shares higher sequence identity (82.2-95.2%) and similarity (89-95.9%) with fish species than those (34.1-37.8% and 57.2-58.1%, respectively) with other species. The phylogenetic tree showed that LhGal B-like clustered into the fish group and was evolutionally related to Mastacembelus armatus. The tissue distribution results revealed that LhGal B-like was expressed ubiquitously in all the tested tissues, where it was highly expressed in the brain, followed by gills and muscle. The immune modulated expression of LhGal B-like was observed by injecting lipopolysaccharide (LPS), polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid (poly I:C) and Lactococcus garvieae (L. garvieae). According to the results, in the gills, the mRNA expression of LhGal B-like was significantly upregulated upon LPS treatment after 48 h and upon poly I:C treatment after 48 and 72 h. In addition, the result showed significant upregulations upon LPS and poly I:C treatment after 24 h. However, significant downregulation was also shown in the earlier phase after injection of poly I:C and L. garvieae in gills. Further, the binding affinity of recombinant LhGal B-like (rLhGal B-like) was evaluated using carbohydrate, pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMP) and bacterial binding assays. The rLhGal B-like could bind all the examined carbohydrates but had a higher affinity to α-lactose. PAMPs and bacterial binding experiments verified a wide range of PAMP molecules and bacterial strains that rLhGal B-like could bind to. Moreover, we examined the agglutination activity of rLhGal B-like, and the result showed that it could aggregate all the gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Taken together, our findings reveal the functional aspects of LhGal B-like as a PRR and the potential involvement of LhGal B-like in the innate immunity of redlip mullet.

Fish body condition and growth are two interrelated traits closely associated with species life history and fitness, whose trade-off can ultimately impact population dynamics albeit seldom empirically demonstrated. They can intricately affect survival rates, which are particularly relevant for species under exploitation. Using individual spatiotemporal information in Northwestern Mediterranean, we document for the first time the existence of a trade-off between condition and growth in regulating survival dynamics in two important fish species for the Mediterranean fisheries that are characterized by contrasting life histories. For the European hake (Merluccius merluccius), a benthopelagic species, juveniles' body condition was detected to be positively linked to survival and negatively associated with the growth of this age group. For the red mullet (Mullus barbatus), the same pattern was observed for young adults. We also show that the observed patterns on a regional level have a clear spatial dependence as we found that observed body condition over a local scale had a broad effect on the population dynamics of the whole region, with the Ebro delta area emerging as the demographic engine of the two species. We discuss our results in the context of fisheries management and underline the importance of improving current stock assessment models and spatially based fishery management towards incorporating body condition and growth due to their influence on important parameters such as survival.

Background: The valorization of byproducts to obtain high nutritional value foods is of utmost importance for our planet where the population is booming. Among these products are oils rich in ω-3 fatty acids produced from fishery byproducts. Recently, mullet roe oil from roe byproducts was produced that was rich in the ω-3 fatty acids eicosatetraenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Oils are customarily characterized for their composition and degree of oxidation but little is known of their biological effects, especially the effect of the extraction method. Methods: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of freshly extracted mullet roe oil from mullet roe byproducts and the effect of the extraction method on human red blood cells (hRBCs) and platelets. To this end, the hemocompatibility (cytotoxicity), oxidative effects, and erythrocyte membrane changes were examined after 1 and 24 h of incubation. Antiplatelet effects were also assessed in vitro. Results: The expeller press oil extraction method and alcalase-assisted extraction produced the most biocompatible oils, as shown by hemocompatibility measurements and the absence of erythrocyte membrane alterations. Solvent extracts and protease-assisted extraction oils resulted in the rupture of red blood cells at different examined dilutions, creating hemolysis. Conclusions: It seems that the proper functioning of oil-erythrocyte interactions cannot be explained solely by ROS. Further investigations combining chemical analysis with oil-cell interactions could be used as an input to design high nutritional value oils using green extraction technologies. All samples exhibited promising antiplatelet and antiblood clotting effects in vitro.

Prosogonotrema iraqiense n. sp. (Sclerodistomidae: Prosogonotrematinae) is described in the flathead grey mullet, Mugil cephalus Linnaeus (Mugiliformes: Mugilidae), collected from the Arabian Gulf off Iraq during June and October 2019. Currently there are 11 species of ProsogonotremaVigueras, 1940 commonly accepted: Prosogonotrema arabicaYadav, 1980; Prosogonotrema bilabiatumVigueras, 1940 (type species); Prosogonotrema caesionisGu and Shen, 1979; Prosogonotrema diacanthiBilqees and Durrani, 1980; Prosogonotrema karachienseBilqees and Durrani, 1980; Prosogonotrema pavasiLokhande, 1990; Prosogonotrema piscicola (Srivastava, 1949) Gibson, 2002 (Syn. Bhaleraoia piscicolaSrivastava, 1949); Prosogonotrema plataxumGu and Shen, 1979; Prosogonotrema posterouterinaYadav, 1980; and Prosogonotrema symmetricumOshmarin, 1965 originally described from marine fishes, and Prosogonotrema nickoliBilqees and Khan, 1992 described from a freshwater cyprinid. Six additional species that have been considered synonyms of P. bilabiatum are also considered. Prosogonotrema diacanthi is considered a junior synonym of P. piscicola and Prosogonotrema carangiHussain and Rao, 1980nec Velasquez, 1961 is determined to be a species distinct from P. bilabiatum and is reassigned herein as Prosogonotrema aluteri nomen novum per the ICZN. Prosogonotrema iraqiense differs from all currently recognized species in the genus by having the width of the ventral sucker approach or exceed the width of the body and from all except P. pavasi (body length/width ratio 1:1.4-1:1.5) by having a distinctive narrower, more elongate body profile with a larger body length/width ratio (1:5.8-1:6.1 vs. 1: 2.0-1:4.1). A key to the 18 species we recognize in Prosogonotrema is included.

The Squaretail mullet Ellochelon vaigiensis is widely found from marine to brackish and freshwater, including the Vietnamese Mekong Delta (VMD). Data on the length-weight relationships (LWRs), growth pattern, and condition factor (CF) play an essential role in fisheries assessment but are limited to E. vaigiensis - a commercial fish in VMD. To better understand the growth pattern of this fish, the study collected samples at four sites, including Thanh Phu, Ben Tre (BT); Duyen Hai, Tra Vinh (TV); Tran De, Soc Trang (ST); and Dong Hai, Bac Lieu (BL). Each month, fish samples were collected using bottom nets at each sampling site during high tide in both the dry season (January to May 2021) and the wet season (November to December 2020 and June to October 2021). This study qualified whether LWRs, growth pattern, and CF of E. vaigiensis vary with sexual, intraspecific, and spatiotemporal variables. The analysis results of 942 specimens showed that fish total length (TL = 17.86 ± 0.13 cm) and weight (W = 54.29 ± 1.05 g) changed with sex, season, month and site. The W could be appraised from a given TL due to high coefficients (r 2 ) of LWRs that were regulated by fish size and season but not sex. The species showed negative allometry as its slope value of LWRs (b = 2.34 ± 0.30) was <3. The growth pattern did not change with sex and site but varied fish size, season, and months ranging from negative allometry to isometry. The CF of females (1.08 ± 0.01) was higher than males (0.99 ± 0.01). Albeit this fish showed spatiotemporal variation in CF, ranging from 0.81 ± 0.01 to 1.25 ± 0.02, the CF (1.02 ± 0.01) was significantly higher than the one threshold, indicating that E. vaigiensis lived a favorable condition. Research results show that this fish species has a dominant growth pattern in terms of length (b < 3) and is well adapted to the environment (CF ≈ 1). These data have an important role in suggesting the future aquaculture of this fish.
