RESUMO

Rapidly spreading industrialization since the 19th century has led to a drastic increase in trace metal deposition in coastal sediments. Provided that these trace metals have remained relatively immobile after deposition, their sedimentary enrichments can serve as records of local-regional pollution histories. Factors controlling this proxy potential include trace metal geochemistry (carrier-, and host phase affinity), and depositional environmental factors (redox variability, particulate shuttling, organic matter loading, bathymetry). Yet, the relative importance and interactions between these controls are still poorly understood, hampering the reliable use of trace metal-based environmental proxies. By summarizing nine site-specific correlation matrices of 16 metal (loid) s (Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn, Sb, Sn, Ni, As, Tl, V, Mo, U, Re, Fe, Mn, Al), total organic C, and S contents in short sediment cores into a single meta-matrix, we test a novel approach for quickly detecting common and contrasting trace metal enrichment patterns across different study locations. Our meta-matrix shows two trace metal groups, within which positive correlations of e.g., Pb, Cd, Zn, Cu, Sb suggest a primary "anthropogenically sourced" (group I) control, whereas known "redox-sensitive" (group II) trace metals (Mo, U, Re) are characterized by fewer positive correlations. However, some group I metals (Cd, Zn, Cu, Sb) also covary with group II metals, inferring that redox variability may obscure primary anthropogenic signals; Sb even shows advantages over Mo and U under oxic conditions. As a more robust pollution indicator we identified Pb; yet for reconstructing historical Pb atmospheric pollution signals (1970s Pb peak), it is crucial to consider the distance from shore. In near-shore environments, local (fluvial) pollution signals may overprint large-scale (atmospheric) signals. Our findings demonstrate that combining site-specific sedimentary correlation and distribution patterns with a meta-matrix considerably aids the understanding of trace metal sequestration in different coastal sedimentary environments, which thereby improves trace metal proxy reliability.

RESUMO

We studied the community composition of microzooplankton (MZP) from the surface waters off Candolim, Goa. The MZP communities were examined for the year 2013, covering different seasons and four stations (Near-shore: G3 & G4, offshore: G5 & G6). A total of 30 species belonging to 24 genera were recorded, which include loricate ciliates (LC: 14 species of 13 genera), aloricate ciliates (ALC: 5 species of 3 genera), heterotrophic dinoflagellates (HDS: 11 species of 8 genera), and copepod nauplii. The MZP abundance in the coastal waters varied spatially irrespective of different seasons, with higher abundance in the offshore stations (G5 & G6, 38-127 cells L-1) and lower abundance in the near-shore stations (G3 & G4, 20-97 cells L-1). The MZP community composition showed the dominance of HDS (16-85%) in the near-shore stations during most of the seasons and inferiority during NEM (16-18%). Moreover, all the coastal waters (near and offshore) were dominated by HDS (58-85%) during spring inter-monsoon. The dominant species of HDS were Dinophysis apicata, Dinophysis caudata, Prorocentrum micans, Protoperidinium breve, Protoperidinium latistriatum, and Protoperidinium granii. The statistical analysis (Canonical correspondence analysis and Spearman's rank correlation) depicts that the MZP abundance and community composition were mainly controlled by salinity (r = 0.4-0.7). Whereas the dominance of HDS in the coastal waters could be the reason for its mixotrophic nature and diverse feeding mechanism. Thus, a strong positive correlation between the HDS and LC (r = 0.73-0.92) showed the feeding ability of HDS in their relative community.

RESUMO

Biodegradable plastics (BPs) are a suitable alternative to conventional plastics. Still, their excessive or unplanned use may disrupt the abundance and community structure of the microbial population. To this end, a 58-day experiment in which biodegradable plastic objects, such as bags and boxes, were exposed to near-coastal seawater was conducted. They also assessed how they affected the diversity and organization of bacterial populations in seawater and on the surface of BPs products. It is evident that after the exposure time, both BP's bag and box products deteriorate in the ocean to varying degrees. The results of high-throughput sequencing of bacterial communities in seawater and those colonized on BPs products reveal significant differences in microbial community structures between seawater and BPs plastic samples. These suggest that the degradation of biodegradable plastics is shadowed by microorganisms and exposure time, while BP products influence the structural characteristics of microbial communities.

RESUMO

Parameters regarding water quality, biology, marine disasters, and anthropogenic factors were collected and analyzed from 2020 to 2021 to evaluate the marine biodiversity of Tianjin's near-shore sea area accurately. A total of 29 indicators obtained from the surveys were selected to form the biodiversity evaluation system. The Pressure-State-Response (PSR) framework model combined with the ecological environment characteristics was used as the assessment method. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) determined the weights of each indicator. The results showed that the main influencing factors of the water environment for species diversity monitoring were dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and chemical oxygen demand (COD), and all water quality monitoring items were relatively stable without obvious pollution. The biomass of biological species in the near-shore sea area of Tianjin was relatively low, the species distribution was uneven, and the structure and function of the ecosystem need to be improved since environmental problems still existed.

RESUMO

Tsunamis are destructive natural disasters that can cause severe damage to property and the loss of many lives. To mitigate the damage and casualties, tsunami warning systems are implemented in coastal areas, especially in locations with high seismic activity. This study presents a method to identify the placement of near-shore detection sensors by minimizing the tsunami detection time, obtained by solving the two-dimensional shallow water equations (SWE). Several benchmark tests were done to establish the robustness of the SWE model, which is solved using a staggered finite volume method. The optimization problem is solved using particle swarm optimization (PSO). The proposed method is applied to different test problems. As an application, the method is used to find the optimal location of a detection sensor using data from the 2018 Palu tsunami. Our findings show that detection time can be significantly reduced through the strategic placement of tsunami sensors.

RESUMO

The fish parasite, Neoergasilus japonicus (Harada, 1930), native to Eastern Siberia and the Amur River catchment area, invaded European water bodies in the middle of the last century, possibly due to the human-mediated distribution of fish in the Amur complex (i.e., the genera Hypophthalmichthys and Ctenopharyngodon). In the deep karst lake, Grand Laoucien (Marseille area, France), this species had an unusually high population density (from 1000 ind./ m3 in zooplankton to 4000 ind./ m3 in the nearshore area) during the free-living period of its life cycle. The annual cycle of N. japonicus includes a 5-month overwintering of fertilized females attached to fish fins and, following this, a five- to six-generation chain from March to November, when the free-living stages in the population alternate with parasite females which attach to their hosts for breeding. The population density of the parasites in zooplankton increased exponentially from spring to autumn, which positively correlated with temperature. We found a strong correlation between N. japonicus density and the community development of microphytobenthos, but not between N. japonicus and phyto- or zooplankton dynamics. The local contributing factors included a seasonal three-fold decrease in water levels and the development of anoxia in profundal waters, which led to a high ambient fish density and thus susceptibility to the parasite. Although the free-living parasite represented only 1% of zooplankton production, it consumed up to 25% of small invertebrate productivity. The maximum intensity of infection reached 140 parasites per fish, or 4.14 per g of weight. The high infection of fish with this parasite, in our opinion, indicated the danger it poses to the local ichthyofauna, which first encountered this new parasite.

RESUMO

Microplastics have been found in many environmental media such as sea water, coastal tidal flats, terrestrial water, sediments, and organisms. Microplastics pollution in inland freshwater lakes have received extensive attention; however, the correlation between eutrophication and microplastics pollution in freshwater lakes remains unclear. In this study, 24 sampling sites were set up in the near shore surface waters of Dianchi Lake, and the pollution characteristics of microplastics such as abundance, composition, particle size, color, and form were evaluated. Water quality parameters related to eutrophication state were analyzed, and the eutrophication indices were further calculated. Specifically, sample pre-treatment was conducted according to the method issued by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the United States. The color and morphological characteristics of microplastic samples were observed using a stereoscopic microscope, and counts and particle size measurements were performed using Nano Measure 1.2 software. Parts of the samples were selected, and the polymer composition analysis was performed using micro-Fourier Transform infrared (µ-FTIR) spectroscopy. The indices related to eutrophication level evaluation were tested according to the experimental standard methods issued by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China. The results showed that the abundance of microplastics in the near shore waters of Dianchi Lake was between 800 and 6000 n·m-3, with an average value of 2867 n·m-3. The types of polymers detected were polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyetherurethane (PEU), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), and polyvinyl acetate (PVAc), respectively. The diameter proportion of microplastics in the range of 0.2-0.5 mm was the highest. Fiber microplastics accounted for the most observed type, followed by fragments and films. Among the 24 monitoring sites, it was found that proportions of severe, moderate, and mild eutrophication and mesotrophication sites accounted for 8.33%, 58.33%, 29.17%, and 4.17% of the total sampling sites, respectively, and the main pollutant was total nitrogen (TN). Microplastics abundances in the near shore waters of Dianchi Lake were significantly positively correlated with TN concentrations (P<0.01), whereas they were negatively correlated with chlorophyll a(Chl-a)concentrations, not reaching a significant level (P>0.05). The microplastics abundance and TN concentrations in the north bank water near the main urban area of Kunming were significantly higher than those in the other three banks. Microplastics and TN were considered to potentially have the same origin and be attributed to the tail water discharge from WWTPs.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Spinal injuries resulting in neurological damage cause significant morbidity. Swift neurosurgical intervention can mitigate negative outcomes. However, variable mechanisms of injury may be associated with inappropriate transport (IAT), which may delay necessary surgical interventions. Patients with near shore spinal injuries (NSSI) presented with unique mechanisms, so we investigated factors associated with IAT in patients with NSSI. METHODS: We performed a multicenter retrospective study of all adult patients transported from a beach resort to 3 hospitals for suspected NSSI between 2006 - 2017. We excluded patients transferred to other facilities, and those not injured in the water. Primary outcome was IAT, defined as patients with NSSI requiring transfer to another trauma center. To avoid heterogeneity in our analysis, we further excluded patients without NSSI who were inappropriately transported to a level I trauma center. We used multivariable logistic regression to assess association of independent variables (such as demographic, environmental, and clinical factors) with outcome. RESULTS: We analyzed 278 patients with suspected NSSI, and found 14 (5.0%) had IAT. Compared to appropriately transported patients, diving was associated with higher percentages of IAT (28.6% vs. 3.9%, p = 0.014) and more were transported by air (50.0% vs. 20.6%, p = 0.01). In multivariable regression, patients' oxygenation saturation (odds ratio [OR] = 0.8, 95% confidence intervals [CI]: 077-0.98) and diving (OR = 7.5, 95% CI: 1.2-46) were significantly associated with IAT. CONCLUSION: Rate of IAT for patients with NSSI was low. However, first responders and emergency medicine providers should be aware that diving is associated with a higher likelihood of IAT.

RESUMO

In the present work, a spar-buoy scaled model was designed and built through a "Lab-on-Sea" unit, equipped with an energy harvesting system. Such a system is based on deformable bands, which are loyal to the unit, to convert wave motion energy into electricity by means of piezo patch transducers. In a preliminary stage, the scaled model, suitable for tests in a controlled ripples-type wave motion channel, was tested in order to verify the "fixed-point" assumption in pitch and roll motions and, consequently, to optimize energy harvesting. A special type of structure was designed, numerically simulated, and experimentally verified. The proposed solution represents an advantageous compromise between the lightness of the used materials and the amount of recoverable energy. The energy, which was obtained from the piezo patch transducers during the simulations in the laboratory, was found to be enough to self-sustain the feasible on-board sensors and the remote data transmission system.

RESUMO

Hurricanes and associated stormwater runoff events are expected to greatly impact coastal marine water quality, yet little is known about their immediate effects on microbiological quality of near-shore water. This study sampled Hilo Bay immediately after the impact of Hurricane Lane to understand the spatial and temporal variations of the abundance and diversity of fecal indicator enterococci, common fecal pathogens, and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Water samples from seven sampling sites over 7 days were collected and analyzed, which showed that the overall microbiological water quality parameters [enterococci geometric mean (GM): 6-22 cfu/100 mL] fell within water quality standards and that the temporal dynamics indicated continuing water quality recovery. However, considerable spatial variation was observed, with the most contaminated site exhibiting impaired water quality (GM = 144 cfu/100 mL). The Enterococcus population also showed distinct genotypic composition at the most contaminated site. Although marker genes for typical fecal pathogens (invA for Salmonella, hipO for Campylobacter, mip for Legionella pneumophila, and eaeA for enteropathogenic Escherichia coli) were not detected, various ARGs (ermB, qurS, tetM, blaTEM, and sul1) and integron-associated integrase intI1 were detected at high levels. Understanding the temporal and spatial variation of microbiological water quality at fine granularity is important for balancing economic and recreational uses of coastal water and the protection of public health post the impact of major hurricane events.

RESUMO

This study compares the occurrence and characteristics of microplastics (MPs) and heavy metal contaminants in the water and sediment of three habitats (corals, seagrass-beds and near-shores) of Rameswaram Island, India. The overall mean concentration of MPs varies from 24 ± 9 to 96 ± 57 items/L in water, and from 55 ± 21 to 259 ± 88 items/kg in sediment. The value of abundance is the greatest in the coral reef site CR-1 (96 ± 51 items/L; 259 ± 88 items/kg) followed by the seagrass site SG-2 (94 ± 55 items/L; 203 ± 75 items/kg) and the near-shore site St-15 (95 ± 63 items/L; 193 ± 75 items/kg). PE fiber (<1000 µm) is predominant in water, whereas PP fiber and fragment (between 2000 and 5000 µm) dominate the sediment. The SEM images of MPs reveal features which are characteristic of degradation like surface roughness, cracks, protrusions, and chalking, along with surface precipitates of both chemical and biological origin. EDAX images show the presence of Cr, Fe, Hg, Pb, Cu, As and Cd associated with MP surfaces.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: It remains unclear whether clinicians can rely on specific symptoms and signs to detect or exclude serious head and spinal injury sustained during near-shore aquatic activities. Our study investigated patients' history of present illness (HPI) and physical examination (PE) for their utility in detecting serious head and spinal injury. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter retrospective comparative analysis of adult patients who were transported from the beach in Ocean City, Maryland, to three nearby emergency departments for possible spinal injury from 2006 through 2017. Patients suspected to have any spinal injury from beach activities were eligible. We excluded patients who could not verbalize their symptoms or with insufficient emergency department records. We compared components of each patient's HPI and PE with radiologic evidence of spinal injury. We calculated sensitivity, specificity, and negative and positive likelihood ratios (LRs). RESULTS: We analyzed 278 patients with suspected spinal injury. Midline spinal tenderness was associated with increased likelihood of thoracic (LR+ 2.6) and lumbar spinal fractures (LR+ 3.5). HPI complaints of paralysis (LR+ 13.9) and sensory loss (LR+ 5.8) had strong associations with spinal cord injuries. Weakness found through PE was also associated with spinal cord injury (LR+ 5.3). CONCLUSIONS: We identified several components of the clinical evaluation that had clinically significant association with spinal injuries from beach-related trauma. While prospective studies are needed to confirm our observations, clinicians may consider these high-risk features in patients with beach-related trauma and adjust testing and level of care appropriately.

RESUMO

Because of the environmental sensitivity of the Black Sea, as a semi-enclosed sea, any subsea oil spill can cause destructive impacts on the marine environment and beaches. Employing numerical modeling as a prediction tool is one of the most efficient methods to understand oil spill behavior under various environmental forces. In this regard, a coupled circulation/deepsea oil spill model has been applied to the Black Sea to address the behavior of the oil plume resulting from a representative hypothetical deepwater blowout. With climatological forcing, the hydrodynamic module based on DieCAST ocean circulation model realistically reproduces seasonally-varying circulation from basin-scale dominant structures to meso- and sub-mesoscale elements. The oil spill model utilizes pre-calculated DieCAST thermo-hydrodynamic fields and uses a Lagrangian tracking algorithm for predicting the displacement of a large number of seeded oil droplets, the sum of which forms the rising oil plume resulting from a deepwater blowout. Basic processes affecting the transport, dispersal of oil and its fate in the water column are included in the coupled model. A hypothetical oil source was set at the bottom, at the northwestern edge of the Shatsky Ridge in the area east of the Crimea Peninsula where the oil exploration/development is likely to be planned. Goals of the study are to elucidate the behavior of the subsea oil plume and assess scales of contamination of marine environment and coastlines resulting from potential blowouts. The two 20-day scenarios with the oil released by a hypothetical blowout were examined to reveal combined effects of the basin-scale current, near-shore eddies, and winds on the behavior of the rising oil plume and its spreading on the surface. Special attention is paid to the Caucasian near-shore anticyclonic eddy which is able to trap surfacing oil, detain it and deliver it to shores. The length of contaminated coastlines of vulnerable Crimean and Caucasian coasts are assessed along with amounts of oil beached and deposited.

RESUMO

Samples of surface sediment and vibrocore were collected in the near-shore area of north Jiangsu Province for grain size, elements, (210)Pbexcess and (137)Cs analyses. In our study area, the diversity of metal concentration was controlled not by the grain size, but by the source. The element content of the old Yellow River Delta was used as baseline for our study area. Geoaccumulation indexes indicate that no station was polluted by Cu, Pb, Zn and As, but the Igeo values of As were close to zero in some stations. Slight pollution caused by Cd was observed in some stations. Correlation and enrichment factors suggest that Cu, Pb and Zn are lithogenic in origin, while As and Cd are mixed in origin. Especially, in some polluted stations Cd was obviously anthropogenic in origin.
