RESUMO

A new strategy to prepare copper (Cu) nanoparticles anchored in nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (Cu@CN) has been designed and the nanomaterial applied to the determination of paraquat (PQ). The nanocomposite materials were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and several other techniques. We found that the Cu nanoparticles are uniformly distributed on the carbon materials, providing abundant active sites for electrochemical detection. The electrochemical behavior of the Cu@CN-based PQ sensor was investigated by square-wave voltammetry (SWV). Cu@CN exhibited excellent electrochemical activity and PQ detection performance. The Cu@CN-modified glassy carbon electrode (Cu@CN/GCE) exhibited excellent stability, favorable sensitivity, and high selectivity under optimized conditions (enrichment voltage -0.1 V and enrichment time 400 s) of the SWV test. The detection range reached 0.50 nM to 12.00 µM, and the limit of detection was 0.43 nM with high sensitivity of 18 µA·µM-1·cm-2. The detection limit is 9 times better than that of the high-performance liquid chromatography method. The Cu@CN electrochemical sensor demonstrated excellent sensitivity and selectivity also in environmental water and fruit samples enabling its use in practical, rapid trace-level detection of PQ in environmental samples.

RESUMO

It is imperative to design and manufacture electrocatalysts towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for popularization of rechargeable Zn-air batteries. Herein, FeNi alloy confined in N-doped carbon nanosheets (FeNi@NCSs) was harvested via a facile complexation-pyrolysis strategy from the mixture of guanine and metal chlorides. After strictly exploring the pyrolysis temperature and metal types, the resulted FeNi@NCSs showed greatly improved performances on both the ORR (onset potential of 0.93 V and half-wave potential of 0.84 V) and OER (overpotential of 318 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and 379 mV at 100 mA cm-2). Further, the FeNi@NCSs based Zn-air battery exhibited a higher open circuit voltage (1.496 V), a larger power density (128.8 mW cm-2), and prominent durability (360 cycles, 120 h). This study provides an appealing approach to utilize biomass for synthesis of low-cost and high-efficiency electrocatalysts in energy associated systems.

RESUMO

The innovation in highly efficient, stable, and economical bifunctional overall water-splitting electrocatalysts is critical in developing sustainable energy, but it remains challenging. In this research, we have developed an unsophisticated method to synthesize hybrid nanoparticles (FeN0.023/Mo2C/C) uniformly dispersed in nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets. The two active components FeN0.023 and Mo2C are coupled to form an FeN0.023/Mo2C/C heterostructure being a highly efficient electrocatalyst, which gives low overpotentials of 227/76 mV for OER/HER at 10 mA cm-2 current density. The alkaline-electrolyzer with FeN0.023/Mo2C/C as the anode-cathode catalyst needs merely 1.55 V to reach 10 mA cm-2 and can maintain a stable state for a minimum of 10 h. This research gives a simple effective resolution in designing affordable and useful overall water-splitting electrocatalysts.

RESUMO

Heterostructures exhibit considerable potential in the field of energy conversion due to their excellent interfacial charge states in tuning the electronic properties of different components to promote catalytic activity. However, the rational preparation of heterostructures with highly active heterosurfaces remains a challenge because of the difficulty in component tuning, morphology control, and active site determination. Herein, a novel heterostructure based on a combination of RuMo nanoalloys and hexagonal N-doped carbon nanosheets is designed and synthesized. In this protocol, metal-containing anions and layered double hydroxides are employed to control the components and morphology of heterostructures, respectively. Accordingly, the as-made RuMo-nanoalloys-embedded hexagonal porous carbon nanosheets are promising for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), resulting in an extremely small overpotential (18 mV), an ultralow Tafel slope (25 mV dec-1 ), and a high turnover frequency (3.57 H2 s-1 ) in alkaline media, outperforming current Ru-based electrocatalysts. First-principle calculations based on typical 2D N-doped carbon/RuMo nanoalloys heterostructures demonstrate that introducing N and Mo atoms into C and Ru lattices, respectively, triggers electron accumulation/depletion regions at the heterosurface and consequently reduces the energy barrier for the HER. This work presents a convenient method for rational fabrication of carbon-metal heterostructures for highly efficient electrocatalysis.

RESUMO

To explore alkaline fuel cells in practice, searching low-cost and efficient alternatives to Pt-based catalysts is urgent yet challenging for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, Co3Fe7 alloy nanoparticles wrapped in N-doped defect-rich carbon nanosheets (Co3Fe7/CNs) were synthesized at 800 °C by a one-step pyrolysis of the mixture (dicyandiamide, iron (II) phthalocyanine (FePc), cobalt (II) phthalocyanine (CoPc) and Fe2O3), defined as Co3Fe7/CNs-800 for simplicity. The pyrolysis temperature and the dosages of dicyandiamide closely correlated to the ORR performance of the resultant catalysts in 0.1 M KOH solution. Significantly, the optimized Co3Fe7/CNs-800 exhibited encouraging onset potential (Eonset = 0.97 V) and half-wave potential (E1/2 = 0.85 V) in the alkaline media, surpassing commercial Pt/C (50 wt%, Eonset = 0.96 V, E1/2 = 0.84 V). This work provides a feasible strategy for developing efficient non-noble metal ORR electrocatalysts in the alkaline condition.

RESUMO

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have been disclosed as one of the most promising energy storage systems. However, the low utilization of sulfur, the detrimental shuttling behavior of polysulfides, and the sluggish kinetics in electrochemical processes, severely impede their application. Herein, 3D hierarchical nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets/molybdenum phosphide nanocrystal hollow nanospheres (MoP@C/N HCSs) are introduced to Li-S batteries via decorating commercial separators to inhibit polysulfides diffusion. It acts not only as a polysulfides immobilizer to provide strong physical trapping and chemical anchoring toward polysulfides, but also as an electrocatalyst to accelerate the kinetics of the polysulfides redox reaction, and to lower the Li2 S nucleation/dissolution interfacial energy barrier and self-discharge capacity loss in working Li-S batteries, simultaneously. As a result, the Li-S batteries with MoP@C/N HCS-modified separators show superior rate capability (920 mAh g-1 at 2 C) and stable cycling life with only 0.04% capacity decay per cycle over 500 cycles at 1 C with nearly 100% Coulombic efficiency. Furthermore, the Li-S battery can achieve a high area capacity of 5.1 mAh cm-2 with satisfied capacity retention when the cathode loading reaches 5.5 mg cm-2 . This work offers a brand new guidance for rational separator design into the energy chemistry of high-stable Li-S batteries.

RESUMO

Porous activated carbon with specific morphology and structure are of particular importance for waste water treatment, especially for the adsorption of toxic hexavalent chromium Cr(VI). However, the scalable and cheap production of such absorbents still suffer a grand challenge. Herein, a new type of N-doped nanosheet was innovatively prepared from easily available and low-cost sewage sludge via a facile and recyclable KOH activation method. The N-doped porous carbon nanosheets (N-SAC) produced by introduction of KOH and dicyandiamide, which performed favourable features for metal ions adsorption (93.2% for Cr(VI)) due to its high specific surface area, tuneable pore size distributions and good hydrophilicity. Additionally, the capacity also remained high after two cycles of adsorption by thermal regeneration, with 90.8% removal rate. The DFT calculation also approved that the doping of N could optimize the Mulliken charges distribution and improve the HOMO energy and improve the adsorption ability of N-SAC. This original proposal may inspire new possibility of creating porous carbon absorbents in a recyclable method.

RESUMO

Charge engineering of carbon materials with many defects shows great potential in electrocatalysis, and molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) is one of the noble-metal-free electrocatalysts with the most potential. Herein, we study the Mo2C on pyridinic nitrogen-doped defective carbon sheets (MoNCs) as catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction. Theoretical calculations imply that the introduction of Mo2C produces a graphene wave structure, which in some senses behaves like N doping to form localized charges. Being an active electrocatalyst, MoNCs demonstrate a Tafel slope as low as 60.6 mV dec-1 and high durability of up to 10 h in acidic media. Besides charge engineering, plentiful defects and hierarchical morphology also contribute to good performance. This work underlines the importance of charge engineering to boost catalytic performance.

RESUMO

Designing and synthesizing nanomaterials with high coverages of active sites is one of the most-pivotal factors in the construction of state-of-the-art electrocatalysts with high performance. Herein, we proposed a facile in situ templated method for the fabrication of oxygen-species-modified nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (O-N-CNs). The epoxy oxygen and ketene oxygen combined with graphitic-nitrogen defects in O-N-CNs gave more active sites for the oxygen-reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen-evolution reaction (OER), as proven via theoretical and experimental results, while the carbonyl-oxygen and epoxy-oxygen species showed more efficient electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Hence, the O-N-CNs showed highly active electrocatalytic performance toward ORR, OER, and HER. More importantly, the superior multifunctional electrocatalytic activity of O-N-CNs allowed their use in the construction of Zn-air batteries to power the corresponding water-splitting cells. This work can offer an understanding of underlying mechanisms of oxygen species on N-doped carbon materials toward multiple electrocatalysis and facilitate the engineering of electrocatalysts for energy-storage and -conversion devices.
