OBJECTIVES: The incidence of occupational burnout among emergency department healthcare workers is high, and their occupational health deserves attention. Establishing a comprehensive occupational health system in medical institutions is crucial. This study aims to understand the current status of occupational burnout among emergency department healthcare workers, analyze its influencing factors, and provide references for preventing burnout in this population. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted using convenience sampling through the Questionnaire Star platform from December 2022 to January 2023 among emergency department healthcare workers. The Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS) scale was used to assess the level of occupational burnout, and univariate analysis and binary Logistic regression analysis were employed to explore the influencing factors of burnout. RESULTS: A total of 1 173 valid questionnaires were collected, with 946 (80.65%) respondents experiencing occupational burnout. The proportions of mild-to-moderate and severe burnout were 73.57% and 7.08%, respectively. The scores for the three dimensions of burnout among emergency department healthcare workers were as follows: emotional exhaustion (EE) 2.33±0.31; depersonalization (DP) 1.88±0.28; low personal accomplishment (LPA) 3.20±0.39. The overall score was 2.46±0.22. Factors associated with occupational burnout included being an only child (OR=1.362, 95% CI -0.707 to -0.058), the average number of night shifts per month (OR=1.167, 95% CI 0.091 to 0.272), and personal experience of workplace violence (OR=1.094, 95% CI 0.027 to 0.195) (all P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of occupational burnout is high among emergency department healthcare workers. Effective measures should be taken by management to promptly intervene, reduce burnout, and ensure the smooth functioning of emergency medical services.

Introduction: Occupational burnout has been introduced as one of the most critical social problems. The present study aimed to evaluate occupational burnout among a group of Iranian endodontists. Material and Methods: Seventy-two Iranian endodontists participated in this cross-sectional study by completing the abbreviated Maslach Burnout Inventory (aMBI), consisting of one questionnaire in three domains. The data were analyzed with SPSS 21, using the chi-squared test, correlation test, and linear regression. Results: Concerning occupational burnout, 2.9% of the participants had severe emotional exhaustion, 4.2% exhibited an intense feeling of decreased accomplishment, 67.2% exhibited moderate occupational burnout, and 78.9% of the participants were satisfied with their job. Of all the variables, only the years elapsed since graduation had an inverse and significant correlation with occupational burnout among endodontists. Conclusion: The overall mean scores of endodontists showed a moderate rate of occupational burnout compared to the standard mean scores in this field. Recent graduates exhibited higher scores.

BACKGROUND: Burnout is a chronic problem prevalent in radiology, with a significant burden on individuals and healthcare systems. DISCUSSION: A substantial portion of the literature on managing burnout has focused on individual-based remedies. We posit that burnout is a systemic problem and present an overview of some system-based strategies that could be employed to mitigate burnout in radiology. These include managing workload, optimizing work shifts, maximizing autonomy, limiting work-life conflicts, creating opportunities for professional fulfillment, utilizing user-friendly electronic medical records (EMR), deploying efficient picture archiving and communication systems (PACS), building system redundancy, leadership transparency, and fostering a healthy work environment.  CONCLUSION: System-based strategies can help mitigate burnout.

Burnout is attributed to negative work environments and threatens patient and clinician safety. Psychological safety is the perception that the work environment is safe for interpersonal risk-taking and may offer insight into the relationship between the work environment and burnout. In this cross-sectional analysis of survey data from 621 nurse practitioners in California, we found that one-third (34%) experienced high burnout. Four factors in the work environment were negatively associated with burnout and positively associated with psychological safety. Significant mediation effects of psychological safety were observed on the relationships between each work environment factor and both emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. The largest mediation effects were observed on the total effects of Nurse Practitioner-Physician Relations and Practice Visibility on Emotional Exhaustion (37% and 32%, respectively) and Independent Practice and Support and NP-Administration Relations on Depersonalization (32% and 29%, respectively). We found, overall, that psychological safety decreased the strength of the negative relationship between work environment and burnout. We argue that research, practice, and policy efforts to mitigate burnout and improve the work environment should consider psychological safety as a metric for system-level well-being.

BACKGROUND: Burnout in primary care undermines worker well-being and patient care. Many factors contribute to burnout, including high workloads, emotional stress, and unsupportive supervisors. Formative evidence suggests that burnout might be reduced if clinic leaders hold quarterly and brief (∼30 min) one-on-one check-ins with team members to acknowledge and address work-life stressors (e.g., schedules, workflow breakdowns, time off requests). This paper describes the intervention protocol for a randomized controlled trial (RCT) designed to evaluate the effectiveness and process of the check-ins in reducing burnout among primary care professionals. METHODS: Two-arm RCT conducted at 12 primary care clinics of a healthcare system in the Pacific Northwest. Six clinics received an adaptive design, semi-structured intervention, including predefined training modules with evidence-based tactics to reduce burnout through the check-ins, followed by clinic-specific feedback sessions prior to offering and conducting quarterly leader-employee check-ins. Six clinics were randomized as waitlist controls. Burnout was measured using the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) at baseline and at the 12-month follow-up. Secondary outcomes include organizational constraints, psychological safety, and supervisor support. Multilevel modeling and qualitative methods were applied to evaluate the effects and process of the intervention. CONCLUSION: By focusing on modifiable work-life factors such as stressors and supervisor support, the check-ins intervention aims to reduce burnout rates among primary care professionals. Findings from this trial will shed light on the conditions upon which check-ins might reduce burnout. Results will also inform policies and interventions aimed at improving mental health and well-being in primary care settings. CLINICALTRIALS: gov: ID NCT05436548.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated a strong association between depression and job burnout among healthcare professionals, but the results have been inconsistent, and there is a lack of in-depth exploration of such a relationship among different healthcare professions. The present study aims to investigate the interrelationships between depression and burnout among Chinese healthcare professionals and whether there are differences in the networks of these symptoms between doctors and nurses. METHODS: The Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey and the 2-item Patient Health Questionnaire were employed to assess job burnout and depression among 3,684 healthcare professionals. The translation has been refined to ensure accuracy and academic suitability. Subsequently, network analysis was conducted on 2,244 participants with a higher level of job burnout to identify core symptoms and explore the associations between job burnout and depression. RESULTS: The present study showed a network association between lack of interest and pleasure in things and being exhausted from work, excessive tiredness facing work, tendency to collapse at work, and lack of passion for work than before among healthcare professionals, as well as a notable difference in the network association between lack of interest and pleasure in things and lack of passion for work than before between nurses and doctors. CONCLUSIONS: The depression-burnout network structures differ between doctors and nurses, highlighting the need for targeted intervention measures for both groups.

Background: The occupational burnout status of nurses in China warrants attention. Childhood trauma, loneliness, and emotional disturbance are significant predictors of this burnout, yet few studies have delved into the underlying mechanisms. This study seeks to explore the mediating pathway from childhood trauma to loneliness, emotional disturbance, and ultimately occupational burnout among nurses through a cross-sectional analysis. Method: Data for the study were collected from Yunnan province, China, from 11 July to 26 July 2022. Key variables were measured using standardized scales: the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire Short Form for childhood trauma, the three-item loneliness scale for loneliness, the Patient Health Questionnaire and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder questionnaire for emotional disturbance, and the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Service Survey for occupational burnout. Mediation modeling analysis was employed for data analysis to test the effect of loneliness and emotional disturbance on the association between childhood trauma and occupational burnout. Data analysis was conducted using AMOS and SPSS software. Results: Loneliness and emotional disturbance fully mediated the association between childhood trauma and emotional exhaustion [indirect effect (95% CI) = 0.228 (0.196, 0.270)]. Loneliness and emotional disturbance partially mediated the association between childhood trauma [indirect effect (95% CI) = -0.020 (-0.039, 0.002)] and personal accomplishment or depersonalization [indirect effect (95% CI) = 0.221 (0.186, 0.255)]. Conclusion: Childhood trauma could affect occupational burnout through loneliness and emotional disturbance among nurses. Preventive strategies could include protective interventions like treatment of loneliness and emotional disturbance, especially in nurses who experienced childhood trauma.

The present study conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis to systematically review the relationship between occupational burnout and work pressure among Chinese police officers. Additionally, the study explored the mediating role of coping styles using a meta-analytic structural equation model. The investigation involved a thorough search of CNKI, PubMed, PsychInfo, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases, resulting in the identification of a total of 39 studies with 124 effect sizes and 14,089 police officers. The findings revealed a positive correlation between work pressure and occupational burnout among Chinese police officers (r = 0.410, 95% CI = [0.347, 0.469]). Furthermore, negative coping styles mediate the relationship between work pressure and occupational burnout. Importantly, these conclusions held true across various work regions for police officers. These results provide insights into the relationship magnitude between work pressure and occupational burnout in Chinese police work and shed light on the underlying mechanisms. Based on these findings, it is recommended that interventions focusing on reducing work pressure and fostering positive coping styles be implemented to mitigate occupational burnout among police officers.

Introduction: Rationing of nursing care is referred to as overlooking aspects of required patient care. Its result is incomplete or delayed services provided to the patient. Anesthesia nurses employed in an intensive care unit are exposed to a significant workload. Particularly heavy is the psychological burden leading in many cases to the onset of burnout syndrome and a decrease in job satisfaction. The aim of this paper: Was to determine the relationship between occupational burnout, job satisfaction and rationing of care among anesthesia nurses employed in intensive care units. Materials and methods: The study group consisted of 477 anesthesia nurses employed in intensive care units in Poland. The study was conducted between December 2022 and January 2023. The research tools were BERNCA-R questionnaire, Job Satisfaction Scale questionnaire and Maslach Burnout Inventory questionnaire, which were distributed to selected hospitals with a request to be forwarded to intensive care units and completed. In the statistical analysis, correlations were calculated using Spearman's rho coefficient, reporting the intensity of the relationship and its positive or negative direction. The analysis was performed using the IBM SPSS 26.0 package with the Exact Tests module. Results: The mean score of the BERNCA questionnaire was 1.65 ± 0.82. The mean score of occupational burnout was 60.82 ± 10.46. The level of emotional exhaustion, which significantly affects occupational burnout, was 26.39 ± 6.07, depersonalization was 14.14 ± 3.21 and lack of personal achievement was 20.29 ± 4.70. All the scores obtained exceeded the threshold of 50% of total points, which indicates the presence of occupational burnout at a significant level. The job satisfaction of the nurses surveyed was above mean at 23.00 ± 5.2 out of 35 total points. Conclusion: The results proved that there is a statistically significant, although with a weak strength of association, correlation between occupational burnout and rationing of care by anesthesia nurses. As the limitation of anesthesia nurses' ability to perform certain activities increases, their job satisfaction decreases. In a work environment that is conducive to nurses, there are fewer job responsibilities that are unfulfilled. Therefore, it is essential to create a friendly work environment for nursing staff that will promote the provision of services at the highest possible level.

In recent years, with the unremitting advancement of higher education reform, academics have been experiencing stress associated with conducting scientific research. In this study focusing on university teachers in China, we adopted a stepwise regression method and reviewed related literature to construct a mechanism of academic stress and occupational burnout. Specifically, we tested job satisfaction and relative deprivation as mediating and moderating variables and conducted empirical research on 1239 teachers from 15 universities in eastern, central, and western China. Our findings show that: (1) academic stress has a significant positive effect on occupational burnout; (2) job satisfaction has a partial role as the intermediary agent between academic stress and occupational burnout; and (3) relative deprivation positively moderates the relationship between academic stress and job satisfaction, indicating that teachers in universities and colleges are also affected by relative deprivation and the perception of inequity. These findings have significant value in the management of higher education and academic research.

Background: Burnout Syndrome constitutes a critical concern in healthcare, particularly among practitioners operating in high-stress, critical care settings. Understanding the multifaceted factors contributing to burnout in this context is pivotal for devising effective interventions and promoting the well-being of critical care professionals. Objective: To investigate the prevalence, contributing factors, and potential interventions related to Burnout Syndrome among critical care health providers in Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional research design was employed, gathering data from a sample of critical care health providers, including medical practitioners. A self-administered structured electronic questionnaire was used, incorporating the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) with its three subscales: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. The target population was male and female critical care health providers over 18 years age, most participants lies between 25 years to 34 years. Results: Statistical analysis shows significant disparities in response distribution (p<0.05), highlighting the importance of understanding encounters with emotional exhaustion, personal accomplishment, and depersonalization. The Durbin-Watson statistic indicated limited autocorrelation, and collinearity tolerance values suggested nominal intercorrelations among predictors. A significant positive correlation was found between the "Depersonalization Loss of Empathy MBI" factor and the outcome variables, indicating complex relationships between emotional exhaustion, personal accomplishment, and depersonalization. Conclusion: The study highlights the multifaceted nature of burnout, revealing intricate relationships between emotional exhaustion, personal accomplishment, and depersonalization. These findings collectively form an important foundation for future guidelines and interventions to enhance the well-being of healthcare professionals.

BACKGROUND: Studies on potential disruptions in rich club structure in nursing staff with occupational burnout are lacking. Moreover, existing studies on nurses with burnout are limited by their cross-sectional design. PURPOSE: To investigate rich club reorganization in nursing staff before and after the onset of burnout and the underlying impact of anatomical distance on such reconfiguration. STUDY TYPE: Prospective, longitudinal. POPULATION: Thirty-nine hospital nurses ( 23.67 ± 1.03 years old at baseline, 24.67 ± 1.03 years old at a follow-up within 1.5 years, 38 female). FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: Magnetization-prepared rapid gradient-echo and gradient-echo echo-planar imaging sequences at 3.0 T. ASSESSMENT: The Maslach Burnout Inventory and Symptom Check-List 90 testing were acquired at each MRI scan. Rich club structure was assessed at baseline and follow-up to determine whether longitudinal changes were related to burnout and to changes in connectivities with different anatomical distances (short-, mid-, and long range). STATISTICAL TESTS: Chi-square, paired-samples t, two-sample t, Mann-Whitney U tests, network-based statistic, Spearman correlation analysis, and partial least squares regression analysis. Significance level: Bonferroni-corrected P < 0.05 . RESULTS: In nurses who developed burnout: 1) Strengths of rich club, feeder, local, short-, mid-, and long-range connectivities were significantly decreased at follow-up compared with baseline. 2) At follow-up, strengths of above connectivities and that between A5m.R and dlPu.L were significantly correlated with emotional exhaustion (r ranges from -0.57 to -0.73) and anxiety scores (r = -0.56), respectively. 3) Longitudinal change (follow-up minus baseline) in connectivity strength between A5m.R and dlPu.L reflected change in emotional exhaustion score (r = 0.87). Longitudinal changes in strength of connectivities mainly involving parietal lobe were significantly decreased in nurses who developed burnout compared with those who did not. DATA CONCLUSION: In nurses after the onset of burnout, rich club reorganization corresponded to significant reductions in strength of connectivities with different anatomical distances. This study aimed to examine the association between occupational burnout and psychological symptoms among Chinese medical staff, assuming social support to play a moderating role in the aforementioned relationship. The survey was conducted online from May 1 to June 28, 2022, and the questionnaires were distributed and retrieved through a web-based platform. The final sample was comprised of 1461 Chinese medical staff in this cross-sectional study. Several multiple linear regressions were performed to analyze the data. After controlling for potential confounding factors, all three dimensions of occupational burnout were associated with poorer psychological symptoms. Emotional exhaustion (ß = 0.33; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.018, 1.479) had the strongest association with psychological symptoms, followed by depersonalization and diminished personal accomplishment. Moreover, medical staff with higher levels of friend support (ß = -0.11; 95% CI, -4.063, -0.573) and significant other support (ß = -0.10; 95% CI, -3.965, -0.168) were less likely to suffer from psychological symptoms when faced with occupational burnout. The results suggested that interventions aimed at lessening occupational burnout and boosting social support can be an effective way to promote the psychological health of medical staff.

AIM: This study investigates the mediation of sleep quality between perceived health and occupational burnout in hospital nurses, considering the moderation of workplace violence and organizational culture. BACKGROUND: Occupational factors lead to physical and mental distress, burnout, and sleep issues in nurses. Approximately two-thirds of nurses experience burnout, impacting patient care quality and safety. Cultivating a positive organizational culture is essential for nursing workforce stability. METHODS: This cross-sectional study employed convenience sampling to recruit 346 nurses from a teaching hospital in southern Taiwan in July-August 2020 (response rate: 87.3%). Self-administered questionnaires containing validated instruments were employed, including an adapted occupational burnout scale, the Chinese version of an organizational culture scale, a Perceived Health Questionnaire, a Workplace Violence Experience Scale, and the CPSQI; all instruments were reliable and valid. The analysis involved descriptive statistics, linear regression, and the Johnson-Neyman technique. RESULTS: Nurses with better perceived health exhibited significantly lower occupational burnout (p < 0.001). Perceived health indirectly impacted burnout through sleep quality (p < 0.01) with organizational culture as a partial moderator. Bureaucratic organizational culture exacerbated this relationship. Additionally, decreased workplace violence moderated the connections among perceived health, sleep quality, and occupational burnout among nurses. CONCLUSIONS: Given the inverse correlation between nurses' perceived health and occupational burnout and considering factors such as workplace violence, organizational culture, and sleep quality, healthcare institutions can proactively take steps to enhance nurses' overall well-being and mitigate burnout. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY: By implementing wellness programs, mental health support, security training, robust reporting, and a zero-tolerance approach to violence, healthcare stakeholders can foster a safe and supportive work environment for nurses, thus improving well-being, patient outcomes, and healthcare quality.

BACKGROUND: Studies have extensively examined the factors contributing to the onset of occupational stress, burnout, and depression. However, the relationship between these variables is limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the association between occupational stress, burnout, and depressive symptoms and to investigate the mediating effect of burnout between occupational stress and depressive symptoms in medical staff. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among medical staff in Chongqing, China. The Core Occupational Stress Scale (COSS), Maslach Burnout Inventory: General Survey (MBI-GS), and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) were used to assess the status of occupational stress, burnout, and depressive symptoms, respectively. The bootstrapping analyses using SPSS PROCESS macros version 3 were conducted to examine mediating effects. RESULTS: The study conducted on medical staff in Chongqing revealed that the detection rates of occupational stress, occupational burnout, and depressive symptoms were 31.8%, 23.3%, and 30.3%, respectively. Hierarchical regression analysis revealed that occupational stress and burnout accounted for 19.3% (p < 0.001) and 18.8% (p < 0.001) of the variance in depressive symptoms, respectively. Mediation analysis showed that occupational stress indirectly affected depressive symptoms through the mediating effect of occupational burnout, with a mediation effect value of 0.13 (bootstrap 95% CI: 0.116-0.144) and the mediation effect accounting for 44.8% of the total effect. CONCLUSION: Our results indicated that occupational stress and burnout were predictors of depressive symptoms. Occupational stress had a significant indirect effect on depressive symptoms via burnout. These results suggest that reducing occupational stress and burnout could be effective strategies for preventing depression among medical staff.

AIMS: To explore the current situation, influencing factors and pathways of safety behaviour of nurses in tumour specialized hospitals, in order to provide a theoretical basis for managers to manage and train nurses, improve their safety behaviour level and ensure medical safety. DESIGN: An anonymous cross-sectional survey. METHOD: A total of 2147 nurses from Grade A cancer hospitals in 15 provinces of China were selected by a convenient sampling method. Questionnaires were collected through the Questionnaire Star platform. Nurses' safety behaviour was measured using the nurse Safety Behaviour Scale, Self-efficacy by the General Self-efficacy Scale, and nurses' occupational burnout was measured by the occupational Burnout Scale, and work engagement through the the Work Engagement Scale. Structural equation modelling was used to test the relationship among nurses' safety behaviour, general self-efficacy, occupational burnout and work engagement. SPSS25.0 software was used to test the relationship among the safety behaviour of nurses, general self-efficacy, occupational burnout and work engagement. RESULTS: The total score of safety behaviour of nurses was 55.45 ± 6.879, the total score of general self-efficacy was 31.39 ± 5.729, the total score of occupational burnout was 44.99 ± 26.587, and the total score of work engagement was 38.48 ± 13.433; the scores of the Nurse Safety Behaviour Scale, Self-Efficacy Scale, and Work Engagement Scale were positively correlated (all p < .001); the occupational burnout scale was negatively correlated with the scores of self-efficacy scale, work engagement scale and nurse safety behaviour scale (all p < .001); Structural equation model analysis shows that self-efficacy and work engagement have a direct positive impact on nurse safety behaviour(ß = .103, ß = .096, all p < .001); Occupational burnout has a direct negative impact on self-efficacy, work engagement and nurse safety behaviour(ß = -.371, ß = -.413, ß = -.328 all p < .001). Bootstrap analysis showed that occupational burnout and job involvement had a significant chain mediating effect between self-efficacy and the safety behaviour of nurses (95% CI: 0.148-0.21). The total effect of self-efficacy on the safety behaviour of nurses was 0.283 (p < .001, 95% CI: 0.225-0.301), the direct effect was 0.096 (p < .001, 95% CI: 0.042-0.15), and the indirect effect was 0.179 (p < .001, 95% CI: 0.085-0.215), The mediating effect accounted for 63.3% of the total effect size. CONCLUSION: Occupational burnout and work engagement play a partial mediating role between self-efficacy and nurse safety behaviour. It is necessary to strengthen training on nurse safety culture awareness, improve the nurse self-efficacy and work engagement, reduce nurse occupational burnout, and thereby improve the level of nurses' safety behaviour.

PURPOSE: This survey evaluated whether the COVID-19 pandemic was a traumatic stress event for family physicians associated with burnout, changes in life priorities, and intentions to retreat from clinical practice. METHODS: We report on 683 clinically active family physicians surveyed through the Council of Academic Family Medicine's Educational Research Alliance (CERA) in the fall of 2021. RESULTS: Overall, 35.2% of family physicians experienced the pandemic as a traumatic stress like event. This was associated with changing life priorities (OR 2.6, CI 1.8-3.9), burnout (OR 1.6, CI 1.1 to 2.4), and withdrawal from clinical practice in various ways. Those who changed their priorities in life were more likely to restrict scope of practice (OR 3.9, CI 2.6-5.9), reduce clinical work effort (OR 3.4, 2.3 to 5.1), relocate (OR 3.1, CI 2.0 to 4.8), retire (OR 2.7, CI 1.4-4.9), reroute their career away from patient care (OR 2.1, CI 1.4-3.1) and less likely to avoid redesigning the practice to improve well-being (OR 0.3, CI 0.2-0.7). Those who experienced burnout were more likely to retire (OR 5.5, CI 2.8 to 10.5), reduce clinical work effort (OR 4.2, CI 2.9-6.1), reroute their career away from patient care (OR 3.9, CI 2.6-5.8), relocate (OR 3.8, CI 2.4 to 5.9), and restrict scope of practice (OR 3.3, CI 2.3 to 4.9). Overall, 48.5% of family physicians expressed some intention to retreat from clinical practice. CONCLUSION: The COVID-19 pandemic impacted family physician's career plans. Remedying burnout is a high-yield opportunity for retaining clinically active family physicians. Physicians retreating from clinical medicine related to changing life's priorities needs further exploration.

Aim: Burnout and stress-related health disorders are on the rise among physicians. The aim of this study is to report the results of a survey on factors affecting the work-life balance of interventional radiologists (IR). Material: The survey consisted of 30 questions focusing on work, family, and personal health. The questionnaire addressed knowledge, attitude, and practice. This online survey was sent to IRs across the globe and the responses were analyzed by three IRs (SH, SNK, SK). Results: On univariate analysis, the major risk factors for burnout were presence of weekend duties ( n = 91, 98.9%, p = 0.02), absence of support group at workplace ( n = 36, 39.1%, p = 0.005), having tough time with administration ( n = 61, 66.3%, p = 0.001), not able to spend quality time on family ( n = 30, 32.6%, p = 0.035), and inability to find time to do things that one enjoys ( n = 53, 57.6%, p = 0.0002). However, multivariate analysis revealed that those having tough time with administration (odds ratio = 2.77 [95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.12-6.48], p = 0.02) and those who could not find time to do things one enjoys (odds ratio = 4.79 [95% CI: 1.42-16.1], p = 0.01) were only statistically significant. Conclusion: Burnout is common among IRs and is considered a significant issue that needs to be addressed. Teamwork, a support structure for major events, healthy lifestyle, and dedicated time for family may combat the burnout.

Objetivo: identificar la prevalencia del síndrome de desgaste ocupacional en los funcionarios del Departamento de Enfermería del Área de Salud de Parrita de la Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social durante el año 2023. Metodología: se realizó un estudio observacional descriptivo trasversal. Se aplicó el instrumento denominado Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) validado al español a 40 trabajadores de la salud. Se calculó la prevalencia del síndrome de desgaste ocupacional y se analizaron sus tres dimensiones: cansancio emocional, despersonalización y realización personal. También se realizó correlación estadística entre la presencia de indicios del síndrome y las variables incluidas en el estudio. Resultados: la prevalencia de funcionarios con indicios del síndrome de desgaste ocupacional identificada fue 47,5%. El 42,5% de los funcionarios presentaron afectación en dimensión de realización personal, 7,5% en la despersonalización y 5,0% en cansancio emocional. No se identificó relación estadísticamente significativa entre las variables incluidas en el estudio y la presencia de indicios de este síndrome. Conclusión: existe una prevalencia elevada de indicios del síndrome de desgaste ocupacional en el personal del Departamento de Enfermería del Área de Salud de Parrita, evidenciado principalmente en la dimensión de la realización personal.


Objective: To identify the prevalence of occupational burnout syndrome in employees of the Nursing Department of the Parrita Health Area of ​​the Costa Rican Social Security Fund during 2023. Methodology: A cross-sectional descriptive observational study was carried out. The instrument called Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) validated in Spanish was applied to 40 health workers. The prevalence of occupational burnout syndrome was calculated, and its three dimensions were analyzed: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. A statistical correlation was also carried out between the signs of the syndrome and the variables included in the study. Results: The prevalence of employees with signs of occupational burnout syndrome identified was 47.5%. Forty-two-point-five percent of the employees were affected in personal achievement, 7.5% in depersonalization and 5.0% in emotional exhaustion. No statistically significant relationship was identified between the variables included in the study and the presence of signs of this syndrome. Conclusion: There is a high prevalence of signs of occupational burnout syndrome in the staff of the Nursing Department of the Parrita Health Area, evidenced mainly in the dimension of personal accomplishment.

BACKGROUND: The lack of nursing staff is a current problem not only in Poland, but also in the world. The decision of nurses to leave the workplace, apart from the financial aspect, often results from unfavourable working conditions related to the work environment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was multicentre, cross-sectional. The study was conducted among a group of 1509 nurses employed in surgical and internal medicine wards in 21 hospitals in Poland. The key variables of the study were: the intention of the nurses to leave their jobs, the nurses' working environment, the level of satisfaction, the level of occupational burnout and the number of patients cared for on the last shift, the number of nurses on the last shift. The Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index (PES-NWI) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) questionnaire were used in the research. RESULTS: Almost half of the surveyed nurses (48.84%) declared their willingness to leave their current workplace. The statistical analysis showed that nurses declaring their willingness to quit their job in the hospital where they were employed were significantly younger (42.88 vs. 45.04, p = 0.000), had shorter total length of service overall (19.96 vs. 23.20), and also in the hospital where they were employed (15.86 vs. 18.50, p = 0.000). The increase in the number of patients by one was significantly associated with a 1% increase in the risk of leaving work (OR = 1.01, 95% CI 1.00-1.02). An increase in emotional exhaustion significantly increased the risk of leaving work by 2% (OR = 1.02, 95% CI 0.99-1.03). CONCLUSIONS: Younger age of nurses, greater workload resulting from more patients and occupational burnout - emotional exhaustion is correlated with the risk of leaving work in the hospital. A lower risk of leaving the job is associated with a higher level of job satisfaction in the hospital, salary and promotion opportunities. Med Pr Work Health Saf. 2023;74(5):377-87.
