RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that significantly influences the patient's quality of life. This serious disease is approaching an epidemic, and the Arab countries are in the diabetes super region. Improving the patient's quality of life is vital for good glycemic control. However, the Diabetes Therapy-Related Quality of Life Questionnaire (DTR-QOL) is not available in Arabic. Thus, we aimed to validate the questionnaire among patients with diabetes in Saudi Arabia. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This pilot study was conducted among randomly selected 30 patients with diabetes who came for regular follow-up in the Diabetes Center in King Fahd Specialist Hospital in Tabuk City, Saudi Arabia, during March and April 2023. A structured questionnaire based on sociodemographic data and the DTR-QOL was used. The information collected were age, gender, diabetes medications, glycemic indices, lipid profile, fasting insulin, homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance, and body mass index. Forward/backward translation, expert assessment, and Cronbach's alpha were used to assess the validity and reliability. RESULTS: Out of the 30 patients with diabetes piloted for the questionnaire validation, 60% were females, the mean age was 51.1 ± 14.056 years, and 94% had type 2 diabetes. The internal consistency varied from 0.80 for hypoglycemia to 0.94 for anxiety and dissatisfaction with treatment. The Arabic version of the DTR-QOL is valid and reliable for use among patients with diabetes, with a content validity of 0.938 and Cronbach's alpha of 0.93. CONCLUSION: The Arabic version of the DTR-QOL is valid and reliable for use among patients with diabetes in Arab countries and has good sensitivity and consistency.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Existing international data has shown that glioma patients suffer from poorer health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) brain cancer-specific Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ-BN20) was developed to be together with EORTC Core Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ-C30) for cancer patients, highlighting issues particularly relevant to brain tumor patients. It has since been translated and validated across numerous cohorts. However, its psychometric properties have yet to be examined in Singapore. This study aimed to validate the use of QLQ-BN20 in a nationally representative sample of glioma patients in Singapore. METHODS: Eighty-seven patients who had undergone neurosurgery for glioma from six hospitals in Singapore completed three self-reported measures of HRQoL (the EuroQol EQ-5D-5L, EORTC QLQ-C30, and EORTC QLQ-BN20). Descriptive statistics summarized their characteristics and scores on the questionnaires. Psychometric properties of QLQ-BN20 examined included convergent and discriminant validity, internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha), and construct validity (Spearman's correlation). Clinical validity of QLQ-BN20 was determined based on whether QLQ-BN20 scores could differentiate patients with good and poor functional status as measured by Karnofsky Performance Scale and Barthel's Index. RESULTS: The QLQ-BN20 was demonstrated to have good convergent validity (item-own scale correlation >0.70) and discriminant validity (item-own scale correlation higher than item-other scale correlation). There is high internal consistency, both overall (α=0.88) and within multi-item subscales (α=0.74-0.88). Conceptually similar subscales between different tools were more strongly correlated. For instance, the QLQ-C30 physical functioning subscale and the QLQ-BN20 motor dysfunction subscale (r=-0.65, P<0.001), and the QLQ-C30 cognitive functioning subscale and the QLQ-BN20 cognitive deficits subscale (r=-0.51, P<0.001). QLQ-BN20 was also able to distinguish between functional statuses of patients (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: This study supports the validity and reliability of the EORTC QLQ-BN20 among patients with glioma in Singapore. There is good convergent and discriminant validity, internal consistency, construct validity, and clinical validity. The QLQ-BN20 is a valuable supplement to the QLQ-C30. Hence, we recommend expanding its use for all glioma patients and possibly brain cancer patients in Singapore.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Nasoseptal perforations (NSP) are a clinically heterogeneous group of disorders with a wide range of available treatments. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) can provide valuable insights for assessing clinical and surgical outcomes. This study aims to develop and validate a novel-specific questionnaire for patients with NSP. METHODS: A multi-centre prospective observational study was conducted at two tertiary referral hospitals. "Septal Perforation Quality of Life" (SEPEQOL) was developed by a committee of experts. The psychometric properties, including reproducibility, reliability, validity, and responsiveness, were assessed. RESULTS: The study included 96 symptomatic NSP patients and 30 healthy controls. SEPEQOL internal consistency was satisfactory [Cronbach´s α = 0.7843; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.702-0.856]. Test-retest reliability was excellent, demonstrated by the absolute intraclass correlation (ICC = 0.974; 95% CI, 0.935-0.989, P-value < 0.001) and Bland-Altman plot (line bias = 1.6 ± 4.57; 95% CI -0.54-3.74, P-value < 0.001). The mean total SEPEQOL score was higher before surgery (25.16 ± 1.65) compared to 6-months after the procedure (13.72 ± 11.39), with a mean difference of 12.19 [standard deviation (SD) 10.76], P-value < 0.001. CONCLUSIONS: SEPEQOL is reliable, consistent, valid, and sensitive to change over time. SEPEQOL assesses the impact of health-related quality of life on NSP and its management in clinical practice. Moreover, it is easy to apply in clinical settings with minimal burden.

RESUMO

This study examines the origins and utilization trends of top quality-of-life (QoL) measures in acne research. A literature search on PubMed identified the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), Cardiff Acne Disability Index (CADI), and Acne Quality-of-Life Questionnaire (Acne-QoL) as the most frequently used QoL measures in studies on Acne Vulgaris. The DLQI was implemented in 142 studies it since its inception, compared to 43 utilizing CADI and 21 utilizing Acne-QoL. Despite it not being acne-specific, DLQI's usage surpassed other measures by over 50% annually since 2006. While DLQI displayed the steepest rise in utilization, usage of all measures increased significantly from 2010 to 2020. This trend underscores the growing emphasis on patient-centered outcomes in acne research, highlighting the need to incorporate both patient-reported and objective outcomes to better capture disease severity and its impact on patients' lives. For dermatologists, QoL indices can expand disease severity beyond purely objective clinical measurements.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: While food allergy (FA) can be fatal, the greatest public health impact of FA arguably lies in its detrimental effect on quality of life (FAQOL). Understanding the factors that contribute to FAQOL at different ages is essential to develop personalized interventions that will improve FAQOL. OBJECTIVE: To determine the most influential factors that impact FAQOL across ages in well-phenotyped participants with confirmed FA. METHODS: One hundred and twenty-five individuals aged 2-28 years with IgE-mediated FA completed validated age-specific FAQOL questionnaires. The relationship between demographic/clinical variables and scores were analyzed to identify key predictors of FAQOL. RESULTS: Poor FAQOL was associated with increasing age, strict avoidance practices, reactions to trace exposures, and more severe reactions as assessed by epinephrine use, anaphylaxis, and/or treatment in the emergency department; FAQOL improved with time from the event. FAQOL was worse in subjects avoiding >2 versus ≤2 foods and in those avoiding milk, egg, soy, sesame, or wheat. Number of foods avoided had greatest impact on children ages 2-7 years, while total number of allergic reactions strongly impacted FAQOL in teens and adults; FAQOL of subjects ages 8-12 years appeared less affected by these variables compared to other age groups. A decision tree analysis identified key predictors of overall FAQOL (age, number of food avoidances, and time since epinephrine use) that can be used to guide intervention strategies to improve FAQOL. CONCLUSION: We directly compared FAQOL in extensively phenotyped children, teenagers, and adults with confirmed IgE-mediated FA. Age; timing, number, and severity of reactions; type and number of FA; and food avoidance practices influence FAQOL and should guide intervention strategies.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the efficacy and safety of cyanoacrylate closure (CAC) for endovascular treatment of varicose veins with cyanoacrylate adhesive (VenaSeal® closure system) in Japan. METHODS: A multicenter prospective consecutive registry study was conducted at 12 centers in Japan on 125 patients with primary varicose veins who underwent CAC. The patients were evaluated on target vein occlusion, postoperative complications, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pain, revised Venous Clinical Severity Score (rVCSS), Aberdeen Varicose Vein Questionnaire (AVVQ), and EuroQol 5 dimensions 5-level (EQ-5D-5L) for 1-year after the surgery. RESULTS: The closure rate was 92.6% at 1 year postoperatively, and 95.0% and 90.2% for GSV and SSV respectively with little difference (p = .491). The mean VAS in the immediate postoperative period was 18.9 ± 23.4. Postoperative complications were observed in 20 patients (16%). Hypersensitivity-type phlebitis occurred in 7 patients (5.6%). Infection of the treated vein resulted in resection of GSV. The rVCSS and AVVQ improved significantly after 90 days and 1 year postoperatively (p < .001), while the EQ-5D-5L have not changed. CONCLUSION: Cyanoacrylate Closure was considered generally a safe and minimally invasive treatment with good mid-term outcomes including SSV. However further study is required for some CAC specific complications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To assess the validity and reliability of the Migraine-Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire 2.1 (MSQv.2.1) in a group of Greek migraineurs. DESIGN-SAMPLE-METHODS: The Greek version of MSQv.2.1 (MSQv.2.1-GR), a self-report measure with 14 items in 3 domains (Role Restrictive (RR), Role Preventive (RP) and Emotional Function (EF)), was administered during a cross-sectional study to 141 Greek adult migraineurs and 135 controls without migraine or any other primary headache disorder, along with Migraine Disability Assessment Scale (MIDAS) and Short Form Health Survey (SF-12) to assess validity. MSQv.2.1-GR was re-administered in a group of participants with migraine two weeks afterwards to assess reliability. Content and construct validity was assessed using Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC), Spearman rho, McDonald's omega, Cronbach's alpha. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to test the latent structure of the MSQv.2.1-GR in migraineurs. RESULTS: A total of 276 adults participated in the study. Internal consistency of the three MSQv.2.1-GR scales RR, RP and EF yielded a range of McDonald's omega from 0.832 to 0.923 (Cronbach's alpha from 0.814 to 0.923). CFA confirmed the proposed three-factor MSQv.2.1-GR latent structure with acceptable goodness of fit indices and factor loadings. Correlations were established between MSQv2.1-GR component and MIDAS scores, showing moderate and statistically significant relationships (from - 0.519 to -0.562, all p < 0.001) for RR, RP and EF. Correlations between MSQv2.1-GR and SF-12 component scores were identified, with values from 0.1 to 0.4, indicating low to moderate associations. ICC was calculated at 0.997, indicating a high level of reliability between the measures. Notably, all MSQv2.1-GR scores (RR, RP, EF) were significantly higher in the controls compared to migraineurs (p < 0.001 for all scales). These findings suggest that MSQv2.1-GR is internally consistent, shows significant correlations with relevant measures, and is effective in discriminating controls from migraineurs. CONCLUSION: MSQv2.1-GR is a valid and reliable tool to determine the effect migraine has on the quality of life of Greek-speaking migraineurs.

Migraine is a major global health issue, ranking at the top leading causes of disability worldwide. The Migraine-Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire 2.1 (MSQ v.2.10 is an effective instrument for measuring the influence of headaches on a patient's quality of life but it is not available for the Greek migraineurs. We therefore made this study to investigate the reliability and validity of MSQv.2.1 in Greek. The Greek version (MSQv2.1-GR) was administered on a total of 142 migraineurs and 136 non-migraineurs. In addition, other instruments such as MIDAS and SF-12 were applied to determine its validity. We concluded that MSQv2.1-GR is a valid measure. There was great reliability between the items because they were measuring the same thing. It had a good correlation with other tests that evaluate migraine-related disability and quality of life. It also differentiated migraineurs from non-migraineurs in terms of quality of life. Therefore, MSQv2.1-GR proves to be an appropriate measure for examining the consequences of migraine on the health-related quality of life among Greek individuals. This tool will be helpful for clinicians in Greece as well as for research purposes such as cross-cultural studies on effects of migraine on quality of life.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Once-daily treatment of chronic hepatitis delta (CHD) with bulevirtide is well tolerated and associated with significant reductions in HDV RNA in the blood and in biochemical liver disease activity. This study explored the effects of 48-week bulevirtide treatment on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with CHD. METHODS: In an open-label, randomised, Phase 3 trial, 150 patients with CHD and compensated liver disease were stratified by liver cirrhosis status and randomised 1:1:1 to no treatment (control), bulevirtide 2 mg/day, or bulevirtide 10 mg/day for 48 weeks. HRQoL was evaluated by the following patient-reported outcome (PRO) instruments at baseline, 24 weeks, and 48 weeks: EQ-5D-3L, Hepatitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (HQLQ), and Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS). RESULTS: Patient characteristics and HRQoL scores were balanced at baseline between the treatment (2 mg, n = 49; 10 mg, n = 50) and control (n = 51) groups. Patients receiving 2-mg bulevirtide reported significant improvements compared with controls on the HQLQ domains of role physical, hepatitis-specific limitations, and hepatitis-specific health distress. Numerically higher scores for general health, hepatitis-specific limitations, and hepatitis-specific health distress domains were reported by patients with cirrhosis who received bulevirtide vs control. FSS scores remained stable across treatment groups throughout. At week 48, patients in the 2-mg group showed greater mean improvement from baseline in health status compared with controls on the EQ-5D-3L visual analogue scale. CONCLUSION: PROs indicate that 48-week treatment with bulevirtide monotherapy may improve aspects of HRQoL in patients with CHD. IMPACT AND IMPLICATIONS: Bulevirtide 2 mg is the only approved treatment for patients with chronic hepatitis delta (CHD) in the EU. Patients with CHD have worse quality of life scores than those with chronic hepatitis B. Bulevirtide treatment for 48 weeks reduced HDV RNA and alanine aminotransferase levels and was well tolerated among patients with CHD. For the first time, this study shows that patients who received bulevirtide therapy for 48 weeks reported improvements in physical and hepatitis-related quality of life domains compared to those who did not receive therapy (control group). CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier, NCT03852719.

RESUMO

Peripheral neuropathy and amputation are common complications of diabetes mellitus (DM) that significantly impact the quality of life of the affected individuals. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of peripheral neuropathy, the level of amputation, and the quality of life in patients with DM. This cross-sectional study was conducted after approval of the synopsis involving 225 diagnosed patients with DM on pre-defined eligibility criteria, selected from public sector OPDs, specialized diabetes centres, and centres manufacturing orthotics and prosthetics. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and the administration of the Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument and the Asian Diabetes Quality of Life Questionnaire. The level of amputation was recorded for each participant. Data was entered into SPSS, and results were synthesized. Pearson correlation is applied to find an association between gender and the quality of life of the participants, while P ≤ 0.05 will be considered significant. The prevalence of peripheral neuropathy in a sample of 225, based on a self-administered questionnaire, was (44.4%), and in terms of foot examination was (51.1%). As people progressed in age, the prevalence increased to 20.0% in patients above 60 years and 8.9% in ≤ 35 years of age. The majority of participants (56.0%) have had DM for less than five years. Females were 57.8% of the study population, while 97.8% of participants had type II DM. Below-knee amputation of the right limb was observed in 22(9.8%) of the participants. The QoL was poor in the majority of the participants (96.9%) patients with DM (P = 0.638 and T = -0.471). This cross-sectional study highlights a high prevalence of peripheral neuropathy and amputation and poor QoL in patients with diabetic mellitus.

RESUMO

The EuroQoL 5-Dimension 5-Level questionnaire (EQ-5D-5L) and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core-30 (EORTC QLQ-C30) are commonly used Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) for breast cancer. This study assesses and compares the internal responsiveness of the EQ-5D-5L and EORTC QLQ-C30 in Dutch breast cancer patients during the first year post-surgery. Women diagnosed with breast cancer who completed the EQ-5D-5L and EORTC QLQ-C30 pre-operatively (T0), 6 months (T6), and 12 months post-surgery (T12) were included. Mean differences of the EQ-5D-5L and EORTC QLQ-C30 between baseline and 6 months (delta 1) and between baseline and 12 months post-surgery (delta 2) were calculated and compared against the respective minimal clinically important differences (MCIDs) of 0.08 and 5. Internal responsiveness was assessed using effect sizes (ES) and standardized response means (SRM) for both deltas. In total, 333 breast cancer patients were included. Delta 1 and delta 2 for the EQ-5D-5L index and most scales of the EORTC QLQ-C30 were below the MCID. The internal responsiveness for both PROMs was small (ES and SRM < 0.5), with greater internal responsiveness for delta 1 compared to delta 2. The EQ-5D-5L index showed greater internal responsiveness than the EORTC QLQ-C30 Global Quality of Life scale and summary score. These findings are valuable for the interpretation of both PROMs in Dutch breast cancer research and clinical care.

RESUMO

Background Studies evaluating the quality of life (QoL) among oral cancer patients in the Indian population are scarce. Regular follow-ups and QoL assessment in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients can aid in comprehensive support strategies to improve their QoL outcomes. Aim and objectives This study aimed to assess the QoL of oral cancer patients and correlate the QoL with demographic and treatment parameters.  Materials and methods The study included oral cancer patients who had previously reported to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. QoL assessment was done using the EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-HN43 questionnaires before and after treatment. The clinico-demographic details, treatment data, follow-up data, and recorded mean QoL were procured from the patient records in Dental Information Archival Software. Assessment of QoL was done before treatment and at intervals of one month, three months, six months, 12 months, 24 months, and 36 months postoperatively after treatment. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 23 (released 2015; IBM Corp., Armonk, New York, United States). A repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was utilized for comparing the average QoL scores and frequency of follow-ups across various intervals. Chi-square tests assessed differences in mean QoL among genders, across different sites, and between primary closure and graft placement. The significance was set at a p-value of less than 0.05. Results A total of 90 OSCC patients had reported to the department. A preoperative assessment of QoL was done for 90 (100%) patients. Out of these patients, surgery has been performed on 41 (45%). Twenty-five out of 41 (60%) patients had responded to regular follow-up, and QoL was assessed for these patients. After the immediate postoperative phase, only 12 (48%) had reported after three months. Only six (24%) had a 12-month follow-up, five (20%) had a two-year follow-up, and one (4%) had a three-year follow-up. There was a constant decrease in the number of follow-ups after the treatment of OSCC (p=0.00). Prior to treatment, the mean QoL index was 4.64. Females had a slightly higher preoperative QoL of 4.76 compared to males, with a score of 4.67 (p=0.157). Immediately after the treatment of OSCC, a decline in QoL scores was noted, with a mean score of 4.25 (p=0.32). Patients who underwent primary closure after excision had a mean post-op QoL score of 4.9, while patients who underwent graft placement had a mean score of 4.6 (p=0.157). Conclusion This study highlights the enduring impact of oral cancer on a patient's quality of life and emphasizes the need for ongoing research to explore specific interventions that can contribute to sustained improvement in QoL. It emphasizes personalized, holistic care approaches for such patients.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aimed to develop a Japanese value set for the EORTC QLU-C10D, a multi-attribute utility measure derived from the cancer-specific health-related quality-of-life (HRQL) questionnaire, the EORTC QLQ-C30. The QLU-C10D contains ten HRQL dimensions: physical, role, social and emotional functioning, pain, fatigue, sleep, appetite, nausea, and bowel problems. METHODS: Quota sampling of a Japanese online panel was used to achieve representativeness of the Japanese general population by sex and age (≥ 18 years). The valuation method was an online discrete choice experiment. Each participant considered 16 choice pairs, randomly assigned from 960 choice pairs. Each pair included two QLU-C10D health states and life expectancy. Data were analyzed using conditional logistic regression, parameterized to fit the quality-adjusted life-year framework. Preference weights were calculated as the ratio of each dimension-level coefficient to the coefficient for life expectancy. RESULTS: A total of 2809 eligible panel members consented, 2662/2809 (95%) completed at least one choice pair, and 2435/2662 (91%) completed all choice pairs. Within dimensions, preference weights were generally monotonic. Physical functioning, role functioning, and pain were associated with the largest utility weights. Intermediate utility weights were associated with social functioning and nausea; the remaining symptoms and emotional functioning were associated with smaller utility decrements. The value of the worst health state was - 0.221, lower than that seen in most other existing QLU-C10D country-specific value sets. CONCLUSIONS: The Japan-specific QLU-C10D value set is suitable for evaluating the cost and utility of oncology treatments for Japanese health technology assessment and decision-making.

RESUMO

Rahul Krishnatry The aim of this study was to translate and validate the European Organization for Research and Treatment for Cancer (EORTC) "Radiation Proctitis" (PRT-20) module in Hindi, Marathi, and Bangla languages. The EORTC PRT-20 was translated into Hindi, Marathi, and Bangla using EORTC guidelines. Two separate translators first translated the original questionnaire into the three regional languages, following which a reconciled forward translation was compiled. This reconciled version in each language was then back-translated into English by two other translators. This back-translated version was then compared with the original the EORTC questionnaire for correctness, and the preliminary questionnaires were formed in all three languages. The EORTC translation unit approved the questionnaires. The preliminary questionnaires were administered to 30 patients (10 for each language) diagnosed with rectal or anal canal cancer who had received pelvic radiotherapy and were at risk of developing PRT. None of the patients had seen the questionnaire before. After filling out the questionnaire, each patient was interviewed for difficulty in answering, confusion, understanding, or if any of the questions were upsetting and if patients would have asked the question differently. No changes were suggested for Marathi and Bangla translations. Two modifications were suggested in the Hindi translation, which was then retested in five patients and finalized. All the suggestions were incorporated into the preliminary questionnaires, which were sent back to the EORTC for final approval. After reviewing the entire report of pilot testing for the translated quality-of-life questionaire-PRT-20 in three languages, it was approved by the EORTC translation unit. The translated questionnaires were reliable, with Cronbach α values of 0.767, 0.799, and 0.898 for Hindi, Marathi, and Bangla, respectively. The Hindi, Marathi, and Bangla translations of PRT-20 have been approved by the EORTC and can be used in routine clinical practice.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: People with diabetes require insulin to regulate blood glucose (BG); rapid-acting insulin analogs (RAIA) represent one approach for BG management. New fast-acting RAIA administered at the start of a meal suppress postprandial BG better than conventional RAIA. New RAIA are expected to confer higher treatment satisfaction and improved quality of life (QOL) than conventional RAIA. METHODS: This cross-sectional, web-based survey in Japan (November 2022) included people with diabetes (type 1/2), aged ≥ 18 years, registered in the Rakuten Insight Diabetes Panel, using new and/or conventional RAIA. RAIA-specific satisfaction was evaluated by questions on RAIA use (scores: 1 [not at all satisfied]; 7 [very satisfied]) and QOL by the Diabetes Therapy-Related (DTR)-QOL questionnaire (scores: 0-100, 100 = best) for the whole population (primary endpoint) and for new versus conventional RAIA users (secondary endpoint). Multiple regression models were used to compare new versus conventional RAIA users. RESULTS: The analysis population comprised 217 people with diabetes (new RAIA, n = 109; conventional RAIA, n = 108). Mean (standard deviation) RAIA-specific satisfaction scores ranged from 5.1 (1.2) to 5.4 (1.2); DTR-QOL total score was 51.6 (20.4). RAIA satisfaction scores were numerically higher for new versus conventional RAIA users; no difference in DTR-QOL total score was observed. DTR-QOL satisfaction with treatment domain score was significantly higher in new versus conventional RAIA users (least squares mean difference [standard error]: 7.3 [3.1]; 95% confidence interval: 1.2, 13.4; P = 0.0197). RAIA-specific satisfaction was higher among patients who discussed BG sufficiently with their doctor versus those who did not. CONCLUSIONS: New RAIA users have greater treatment satisfaction than conventional RAIA users. QOL was similar among new and conventional RAIA users, except for satisfaction with treatment, which was significantly higher among new RAIA users. Detailed explanations from the doctor to the person with diabetes about the relationship between new RAIA and BG status are essential. RESUMO

AIM: To compare and analyse the diagnostic efficacy of the College of Optometrists Vision Development Quality of Life Questionnaire (COVD-QOL) and the Convergence Insufficiency Symptom Survey (CISS) in detecting convergence insufficiency and to compare their diagnostic value in clinical applications. METHODS: Using the diagnostic test method, 62 adult patients with convergence insufficiency (age: 24.74±3.75y) and 62 normal participants (age: 23.61±3.13y) who visited the Optometry Clinic of West China Hospital of Sichuan University from April 2021 to January 2023 were included. All subjects completed the CISS and COVD-QOL. Statistical analysis of the sensitivity and specificity of the CISS and COVD-QOL and comparison and joint experimental analysis of their diagnostic efficacy were performed. RESULTS: The sensitivity of the CISS and COVD-QOL for convergence insufficiency was 64.5% and 71.0%, respectively, while the specificity was 96.8% and 67.7%, respectively. Compared to the CISS alone, the combination of the CISS and COVD-QOL demonstrated lower sensitivity and specificity. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve of CISS, COVD-QOL and CISS combined with COVD-QOL were 0.806, 0.694 and 0.782, respectively. CONCLUSION: Considering the low sensitivity of the CISS and the low specificity of the COVD-QOL, it is recommended to supplement these questionnaires with other screening tests for the detection of convergence insufficiency.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to assess the cultural adaptation, validity, and reliability of the Turkish version of the Juvenile Arthritis Quality of Life Questionnaire (JAQQ) in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). METHODS: A total of 100 JIA patients (64% female), aged 9 to 18 years, participated in the study conducted at a tertiary care university hospital. The JAQQ was culturally adapted through a rigorous translation process and administered alongside established measures, including the Childhood Health Assessment Questionnaire (CHAQ), Juvenile Arthritis Biopsychosocial Questionnaire (JABQ), and Children's Depression Inventory (CDI). Validity and reliability were evaluated using Spearman's correlation coefficients, Cronbach's alpha, intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), standard error of the mean (SEM), and minimal detectable change (MDC). RESULTS: The Turkish version of JAQQ exhibited high convergent validity, correlating significantly with CHAQ, JABQ, and CDI. No floor or ceiling effects were observed in the total JAQQ score, indicating a balanced assessment. Internal consistency was excellent (Cronbach's α = 0.948), and test-retest reliability was satisfactory (ICC = 0.913). SEM and MDC95 values were 0.357 and 0.99, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The Turkish adaptation of JAQQ emerges as a valid and reliable instrument for comprehensively assessing the health-related quality of life in children and adolescents diagnosed with JIA. The questionnaire's robust psychometric properties, coupled with distinctive features like individualized assessment, highlight its potential as a valuable tool for both clinical assessment and scientific research in the field of pediatric rheumatology. Key Points • The Juvenile Arthritis Quality of Life Questionnaire (JAQQ) is an important scale that evaluates the quality of life of children with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA). • JAQQ is known and used in the field of pediatric rheumatology in Turkey, but its Turkish adaptation has not been made before. • Our study includes 100 JIA patients aged between 9 and 18 years and shows that the Turkish version of JAQQ is valid and reliable in measuring the quality of life of these children. • This research contributes to the accurate assessment of the quality of life in Turkish children diagnosed with JIA, providing valuable insights for both clinical and scientific studies.

RESUMO

Childhood and adolescence, vital in shaping adult life and society, are profoundly impacted during conflicts like Syria's devastating war. This study explores the prevalence of behavioral disorders in Syrian children and adolescents, examining the influence of war and family-related factors. This cross-sectional study was conducted on children aged 2-17 years at a children's outpatient clinic in Damascus, Syria. We assessed parents' quality of life, war and family-related factors, and behavioral difficulties through parental interviews using two questionnaires: the Arabic version of the Strengths & Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and the brief Arabic version of the World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF). 74.67% of children aged 2-4 years and 61.29% of children aged 5-17 years were experiencing behavioral difficulties, with emotional difficulties being the most prevalent ones. Children exposed to kidnapping, family losses, lack of school enrollment, and those with parents having lower education, lower socioeconomic status, and poorer quality of life exhibited higher Total SDQ scores. The high prevalence of behavioral difficulties among children and adolescents in Syria is a major concern, with both direct and indirect war-related factors contributing to this issue.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cough is considered chronic when it lasts for >8 weeks. When no medical explanation can be found it is often called unexplained chronic cough (UCC), which may affect health-related quality of life (HRQOL). This study aimed to assesses the validity and reliability of the Swedish version of the Leicester Cough Questionnaire (LCQ-S) in patients with UCC. METHODS: Seventy-six consecutively selected patients with UCC replied to: a local questionnaire; the LCQ-S; a Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for cough; the Swedish version of the Hull Airway Reflux Questionnaire (HARQ-S); and the Chemical Sensitivity Scale for Sensory Hyperreactivity (CSS-SHR). To evaluate the reproducibility of the LCQ-S, the VAS and LCQ-S were answered again after two to four weeks. RESULTS: Seventy-four patients (17 men) answered the questionnaires at baseline. Concurrent validity for LCQ-S was regarded as moderate with the VAS for cough and HARQ-S. Internal consistency using Cronbach's alpha was high for the LCQ-S total score (0.92) and satisfactory for the LCQ-S domains (0.78-0.83). Reliability and reproducibility were analysed in 57 patients (14 men). Intra-class correlation for the LCQ-S total score and domains showed strong reliability (≥0.92), without any significant differences over time. The standard error of measurement and the smallest real difference were 1.26 and 3.49, respectively. The Bland-Altman plot showed no systematic change in the mean values. CONCLUSIONS: The LCQ-S has good validity and reliability and can be used in clinical settings to evaluate HRQOL in Swedish-speaking adult patients with UCC.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There is a limited understanding of site-specific, quality of life (QOL) outcomes in anterior skull base surgery (ASBS). The objective of the present investigation was to characterize postoperative change in QOL outcomes for anterior skull base lesions following open and endoscopic surgery. METHODS: A comprehensive review of the literature was performed according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines using the PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Cochrane databases for studies reporting pre- and postoperative, site-specific, QOL outcome measures in ASBS using validated questionnaires. Studies utilizing the anterior skull base quality of life (ASBQ) questionnaire or the skull base inventory were included. Investigations focusing on skull base surgery for pituitary lesions, as well as survey validation and non-English studies, were excluded. RESULTS: A total of 112 studies were screened; 4 studies, comprising a total of 195 patients and focusing exclusively on the ASBQ, were included in the systematic review. Using a fixed effect model for the meta-analysis, the mean ASBQ score was similar at six (3.45, P = 0.312; -0.19, 95% confidence interval: -0.57, 0.18) and 12 months postoperatively (3.6, P = 0.147; 0.3, 95% confidence interval: -0.11, 0.72) compared to baseline (3.53). CONCLUSIONS: Across a variety of anterior skull base pathologies, skull base-specific QOL demonstrated no improvement at 6 months and 12 months postsurgery. Few studies to date have published pre- and postoperative QOL data for patients undergoing ASBS, highlighting a current shortcoming in the available literature. Long-term follow-up in patients undergoing open and endoscopic approaches will be necessary to better understand and optimize outcomes for patients having ASBS.
