BACKGROUND: Despite significant progress in its health sector, Bangladesh has a high burden of diarrheal mortality and morbidity in the South Asian region. Given recent major social and economic transitions in Bangladesh, it is important to examine how patterns of diarrhea and its treatment have evolved over the past few decades. The current study aims to assess the temporal changes in the frequency of diarrhea and identify the factors that influence whether affected children receive proper treatment. METHODS: The current study utilized data from three Bangladesh Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS), 2006, 2012-13, and 2019, respectively. Binary logistic regressions were conducted, and the reported results included odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). A p-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant (α = 0.05). RESULTS: The prevalence of diarrhea in Bangladesh declined from 7.05% in 2006 to 3.91% in 2012-13, but then increased to 8.78% in 2019. The proportion of children with diarrhea who received oral rehydration therapy (ORT) was 68.91%, 77.35%, and 70.59% respectively. Binary logistic regression indicated that older children (OR:0.54; CI:0.51-0.58), females (OR:0.92; CI:0.86-0.98), children from upper quintile families, and children from mothers having primary education (OR:0.9; CI:0.83-0.98) were less likely to suffer from diarrhea. However, the odds of receiving proper treatment with ORT were higher among older children (OR:1.45; CI:1.26-1.68), children from the rich and richest quintiles (OR:1.85; CI:1.47-2.32 and OR:1.7; CI:1.32-2.2 respectively). Also, it was the same for children from mothers with primary (OR:1.19; CI:1.01-1.41) and secondary or above education (OR:1.32; CI:1.12-1.56). CONCLUSION: A targeted approach is needed to reduce diarrhea and promote the use of ORT. Maternal education can be an important intervention, and steps should be taken to reduce poverty. Future policies should consider strategies focusing on socioeconomic and environmental factors.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent dehydration causes chronic kidney disease in humans and animal models. The dromedary camel kidney has remarkable capacity to preserve water and solute during long-term dehydration. In this study, we investigated the effects of dehydration and subsequent rehydration in the camel's kidney histology/ultrastructure and changes in aquaporin/solute carrier proteins along with gene expression. RESULTS: In light microscopy, dehydration induced few degenerative and necrotic changes in cells of the cortical tubules with unapparent or little effect on medullary cells. The ultrastructural changes encountered in the cortex were infrequent during dehydration and included nuclear chromatin condensation, cytoplasmic vacuolization, mitochondrial swelling, endoplasmic reticulum/ lysosomal degeneration and sometimes cell death. Some mRNA gene expressions involved in cell stability were upregulated by dehydration. Lesions in endothelial capillaries, glomerular membranes and podocyte tertiary processes in dehydrated camels indicated disruption of glomerular filtration barrier which were mostly corrected by rehydration. The changes in proximal tubules brush borders after dehydration, were accompanied by down regulation of ATP1A1 mRNA involved in Na + /K + pump that were corrected by rehydration. The increased serum Na, osmolality and vasopressin were paralleled by modulation in expression level for corresponding SLC genes with net Na retention in cortex which were corrected by rehydration. Medullary collecting ducts and interstitial connective tissue were mostly unaffected during dehydration. CKD, a chronic nephropathy induced by recurrent dehydration in human and animal models and characterized by interstitial fibrosis and glomerular sclerosis, were not observed in the dehydrated/rehydrated camel kidneys. The initiating factors, endogenous fructose, AVP/AVPR2 and uric acid levels were not much affected. TGF-ß1 protein and TGF-ß1gene expression showed no changes by dehydration in cortex/medulla to mediate fibrosis. KCNN4 gene expression level was hardly detected in the dehydrated camel's kidney; to encode for Ca + + -gated KCa3.1 channel for Ca + + influx to instigate TGF-ß1. Modulation of AQP 1, 2, 3, 4, 9 and SLC protein and/or mRNAs expression levels during dehydration/rehydration was reported. CONCLUSIONS: Long-term dehydration induces reversible or irreversible ultrastructural changes in kidney cortex with minor effects in medulla. Modulation of AQP channels, SLC and their mRNAs expression levels during dehydration/rehydration have a role in water conservation. Cortex and medulla respond differently to dehydration/rehydration.

INTRODUCTION: Neurostimulation/neurorecording are tools to study, diagnose, and treat neurologic/psychiatric conditions. Both techniques depend on volume conduction between scalp and excitable brain tissue. We examine how neurostimulation with TMS is affected by hydration status, a physiologic variable which can influence the volume of fluid spaces/cells, excitability and cellular/global brain functioning. Compared to dehydration, we expected rehydration to show signs of macroscopic and microscopic volume changes including decreased scalp-cortex distance (brain closer to stimulator) and astrocyte swelling-induced glutamate release. METHODS: Normal healthy adult participants (32, 9 male) had common motor TMS measures taken in a repeated measures design from dehydrated (12-hour overnight fast/thirst) and rehydrated (identical dehydration protocol followed by rehydration with 1 L water in 1 hour) testing days. The target region was left primary motor cortex hand area. Response at the target muscle was recorded with electromyography. Urinalysis confirmed hydration status. RESULTS: Motor hotspot shifted in half of participants. Motor threshold decreased in rehydration, indicating increased excitability. Even after re-dosing/re-localizing TMS to the new threshold/hotspot, rehydration still showed evidence of increased excitability: recruitment curve measures generally shifted upwards and SICF was increased. SICI, LICI, LICF, and CSP were relatively unaffected. The hydration perturbations were mild/subclinical, based on the magnitude/speed and urinalysis. DISCUSSION: Motor TMS measures showed evidence of expected physiologic changes of osmotic challenges. Hydration may be a source of variability affecting techniques dependant on brain volumes/volume conduction. These concepts are important for researchers/clinicians using such techniques or dealing with the wide variety of disease processes involving water balance.

The growth, yield, and seed quality of rapeseed are negatively affected by drought stress. Therefore, it is of great value to understand the molecular mechanism behind this phenomenon. In a previous study, long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) were found to play a key role in the response of rapeseed seedlings to drought stress. However, many questions remained unanswered. This study was the first to investigate the expression profile of lncRNAs not only under control and drought treatment, but also under the rehydration treatment. A total of 381 differentially expressed lncRNA and 10,253 differentially expressed mRNAs were identified in the comparison between drought stress and control condition. In the transition from drought stress to rehydration, 477 differentially expressed lncRNAs and 12,543 differentially expressed mRNAs were detected. After identifying the differentially expressed (DE) lncRNAs, the comprehensive lncRNAs-engaged network with the co-expressed mRNAs in leaves under control, drought and rehydration was investigated. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis of co-expressed mRNAs identified the most significant pathways related with plant hormones (expecially abscisic acid, auxin, cytokinins, and gibberellins) in the signal transduction. The genes, co-expressed with the most-enriched DE-lncRNAs, were considered as the most effective candidates in the water-loss and water-recovery processes, including protein phosphatase 2 C (PP2C), ABRE-binding factors (ABFs), and SMALL AUXIN UP-REGULATED RNAs (SAURs). In summary, these analyses clearly demonstrated that DE-lncRNAs can act as a regulatory hub in plant-water interaction by controlling phytohormone signaling pathways and provided an alternative way to explore the complex mechanisms of drought tolerance in rapeseed.

BACKGROUND: The results of current randomized controlled trials (RCTs) vary regarding the effectiveness of rehydration prior to anesthesia induction. Our objective was to determine the effectiveness of pre-induction rehydration in patients undergoing tracheal intubation or surgical procedures. METHODS: This meta-analysis followed PRISMA guidelines and was registered in the INPLASY database (registration number: INPLASY2022100099). Two reviewers independently searched PubMed, Embase, The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and Clinical Trials databases until October 2022, without any restrictions on date. Any randomized controlled trial investigating the administration of intravenous fluids to patients undergoing tracheal intubation or pre-surgical anesthesia induction was considered eligible. Exclusion criteria were applied to exclude certain literature. Data were analyzed using RevMan (5.4.1) software after independent extraction. The primary objective of this study was to determine if intravenous rehydration could reduce the occurrence of hypotensive events and the use of vasoactive drugs following anesthesia induction. RESULTS: This meta-analysis included seven studies with a total of 2850 patients, including 1430 patients who received rehydration and 1420 control patients. Patients who received early rehydration had a lower incidence of hypotensive events compared to those who did not (RR 0.78, 95% CI 0.66-0.92, P = 0.004). No heterogeneity was observed (p = 0.31, I2 = 16%). However, subgroup analysis showed that rehydration before tracheal intubation did not reduce hypotensive events in critically ill patients (RR 0.99, 95% CI 0.61-1.60, P = 0.96). There were no significant differences in the use of vasoactive medications between the two study groups (RR 0.96, 95% CI 0.80-1.16, P = 0.69). No heterogeneity was observed (p = 0.26, I2 = 23%). The funnel plot indicated no evidence of publication bias. CONCLUSIONS: Pre-induction rehydration can reduce the occurrence of hypotensive events, but only in pre-surgical patients, and does not decrease the use of vasoactive medications.

The impact of drought events on the growth and yield of wheat plants has been extensively reported; however, limited information is available on the changes in physiological characteristics and their effects on the growth and water productivity of wheat after repeated drought stimuli. Moreover, whether appropriate drought stimulus can improve stress resistance in plants by improving physiological traits remains to be explored. Thus, in this study, a pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of intermittent and persistent mild [65%-75% soil water-holding capacity (SWHC)], moderate (55%-65% SWHC), and severe drought (45%-55% SWHC) stress on the growth, physiological characteristics, yield, and water-use efficiency (WUE) of winter wheat. After the second stress stimulus, persistent severe drought stress resulted in 30.98%, 234.62%, 53.80%, and 31.00% reduction in leaf relative water content, leaf water potential, photosynthetic rate (Pn), and indole-3-acetic acid content (IAA), respectively, compared to the control plants. However, abscisic acid content, antioxidant enzyme activities, and osmoregulatory substance contents increased significantly under drought stress, especially under persistent drought stress. After the second rehydration stimulus (ASRR), the actual and maximum efficiency of PSII and leaf water status in the plants exposed to intermittent moderate drought (IS2) stress were restored to the control levels, resulting in Pn being 102.56% of the control values; instantaneous WUE of the plants exposed to persistent severe drought stress was 1.79 times that of the control plants. In addition, the activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase, and glutathione reductase, as well as the content of proline, under persistent mild drought stress increased by 52.98%, 33.47%, 51.95%, 52.35%, and 17.07% at ASRR, respectively, compared to the control plants, which provided continuous antioxidant protection to wheat plants. This was also demonstrated by the lower H2O2 and MDA contents after rehydration. At ASRR, the IAA content in the IS2 and persistent moderate drought treatments increased by 36.23% and 19.61%, respectively, compared to the control plants, which favored increased aboveground dry mass and plant height. Compared to the control plants, IS2 significantly increased wheat yield, WUE for grain yield, and WUE for biomass, by 10.15%, 32.94%, and 33.16%, respectively. Collectively, IS2 increased grain growth, yield, and WUE, which could be mainly attributed to improved physiological characteristics after drought-stimulated rehydration.

This study investigated the effects of ultrasound-assisted soybean lecithin (SL) on the rehydration behavior and physical properties of egg white protein powder (EWPP) and its ability to enhance the efficacy of EWPP instant solubility. The results of rehydration, including wettability and dispersibility, indicated that ultrasound (200 W)-assisted SL (5 g/L) addition had the shortest wetting time and dispersion time, which were 307.14 ± 7.00 s and 20.95 ± 2.27 s, respectively. In terms of powder properties, the EWPP with added SL had lower lightness, moisture content and bulk density. In addition, the increase in average particle size, net negative charge, free sulfhydryl group content and surface hydrophobicity indicated that ultrasound treatment facilitated the protein structures unfolding and promoted the formation of SL-EWP complexes. Overall, our study provided a new perspective for the food industry regarding using ultrasound technology to produce instant EWPP with higher biological activity and more complete nutritional value.

OBJECTIVES: Systemic dehydration may induce osmotic and oxidative stress in the vocal folds, but our knowledge of the biology and mitigation with rehydration is limited. The purpose of this experiment was to evaluate whether systemic dehydration induces vocal fold oxidative and osmotic stress and to compare the impact of rehydration by water intake versus electrolyte intake on osmotic and oxidative stress-related gene expression. METHODS: Four-month-old male Sprague-Dawley rats (N = 32) underwent water restriction. Rehydration was achieved with ad libitum access to water or electrolytes for 24 hours. Rats were divided into four groups: euhydration control, dehydration-only, dehydration followed by either water or electrolyte rehydration (n = 8/group). Gene expression was assessed via RT2 Gene Expression Profiler arrays. RESULTS: With respect to oxidative stress, 10 genes were upregulated and 2 were downregulated after vocal fold dehydration compared with the euhydrated control. Concerning osmotic stress, six genes were upregulated with dehydration only, six genes were upregulated following rehydration with water, whereas a single gene was upregulated with electrolyte rehydration. All genes with significantly different expression between the rehydration groups showed lower expression with electrolytes compared with water. CONCLUSIONS: The results support a potential role of oxidative and osmotic stresses in vocal folds related to systemic dehydration. The differences in stress-related gene expression in vocal fold tissue between rehydration with electrolytes or water, albeit modest, suggest that both rehydration options offer clinical utility to subjects experiencing vocal fold dehydration with preliminary evidence that electrolytes may be more effective than water in resolving osmotic stress. Heat stroke (HS) is a critical condition with extremely high mortality. Heat acclimation (HA) is widely recognized as the best measure to prevent and protect against HS. Preventive administration of oral rehydration salts III (ORSIII) and probiotics have been reported to sustain intestinal function in cases of HS. This study established a rat model of HA that was treated with probiotics-based ORS (ORSP) during consecutive 21-day HA training. The results showed that HA with ORSP could attenuate HS-induced hyperthermia by regulating thermoregulatory response. We also found that HA with ORSP could significantly alleviate HS-induced multiple organ injuries. The expression levels of a series of heat-shock proteins (HSPs), including HSP90, HSP70, HSP60, and HSP40, were significantly up-regulated from the HA training. The increases in intestinal fatty acid binding protein (I-FABP) and D-Lactate typically seen during HS were decreased through HA. The representative TJ proteins including ZO-1, E-cadherin, and JAM-1 were found to be significantly down-regulated by HS, but sustained following HA. The ultrastructure of TJ was examined by TEM, which confirmed its protective effect on the intestinal barrier protection following HA. We also demonstrated that HA raised the intestinal levels of beneficial bacteria Lactobacillus and lowered those of the harmful bacteria Streptococcus through 16S rRNA gene sequencing. These findings suggest that HA with ORSP was proven to improve intestinal thermotolerance and the levels of protective gut microbiota against HS.

Lotus rhizome powder (LRP) tends to lump during hot-water rehydration, adversely affecting its edible quality. By utilizing a restricted swelling treatment (ST), where LRP was swollen at a temperature slightly below its onset gelatinization temperature (To), the lumping rate could be substantially reduced from 30.95% to 6.39%. This treatment induced an ordered-disordered structural transition of LRP without compromising its granule morphology and water dispersibility. This transition led to significant increases in thermal transition temperatures and a notable delay in peak pasting time by 86.6 s. These changes effectively delayed the formation of a gelatinous skin surrounding the dry granules, allowing them sufficient time to absorb water and paste completely, thereby preventing lumping. The prevention of lumping was beneficial for obtaining desired viscoelasticity of LRP paste. Conversely, ST treatments conducted at temperatures markedly deviating from To resulted in significantly higher lumping rates, underscoring the importance of carefully controlling the ST temperature.

INTRODUCTION: Hydrates are often used as pharmaceutical active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), especially when anhydrates may not be feasible likely due to physicochemical properties concerns. Pharmaceutical hydrates, whereas water is present as crystal adduct, are feasible for drug products as they do not pose any safety concern. Hydrates can impart many different advantages; therefore, they are quite common and preferred solid forms for numerous pharmaceutical materials on market. However, hydrates may involve various phase transitions, which may impact the stability and processability of drug substance. METHODS: Phase transitions, which include temperature-induced dehydration and moisture-facilitated rehydration are investigated by different solid-state analytical techniques such as powder x-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, polarized light microscopy, and single-crystal x-ray diffraction. RESULTS: This research investigation focuses on the different phase transition behaviors of a newly discovered pharmaceutical compound with three channel hydrates, two of which confirmed by single-crystal analysis. The retention or rearrangement of crystal structures over the transitions are studied. Hydrate 3 exhibits a characteristic feature of channel hydrate that involves symmetric lattice relaxation. Unlike hydrate 3, hydrate 2 results in a potentially new unit cell upon dehydration due to asymmetric lattice relaxation, which converted back to Hydrate 2 in presence of water, a very unique behavior for a channel hydrate, rarely observed, which entails novelty of this research work. CONCLUSION: The relationship among crystal forms of different hydrates of this new compound is thus established. The current investigation is a vital part of drug product risk assessment for hydrates to avoid any challenges during manufacturing operations and/or stability studies. This investigation was successfully applied in the present study and can be expanded to other newly discovered APIs in future.

This study examined the impact of different dipping pre-treatments (PO: potassium carbonate-olive oil emulsion, HW: hot water) and drying methods (sun, oven, hot air, and freeze) on aronia berry quality. Freeze-drying showed the highest process yield (29.07%-29.43%), while sun-drying had the lowest (24.60%-25.74%). PO pre-treatment showed superior moisture and water activity reductions across all drying methods. Notably, it enhanced carotenoid levels (PO: 399.5, HW: 371.4 mg BCE/kg), antioxidant activity (PO: 9602.8, HW: 9403.3 mg TE/kg), total phenolics (PO: 38176.5, HW: 34804.0 mg GAE/kg) and flavonoids (PO: 6537.1, HW: 6141.5 mg CE/kg) during freeze-drying. Additionally, PO-treated samples exhibited superior rehydration properties, with a ratio of 293.32% and a 1.01 g/g capacity. On the other hand, HW pre-treatment increased ascorbic acid levels (PO: 377.0, HW: 391.7 mg/kg). The highest quality dried aronia berries are generally observed in PO-treated samples, especially in freeze drying, followed by hot-air, oven, and sun drying processes.

Background: Patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery often experience hypotension following general anesthesia induction due to insufficient volume. This study aimed to assess whether pre-rehydration guided by carotid corrected flow time (FTc) could mitigate post-induction hypotension induced by general anesthesia. Methods: Patients undergoing resection of gastrointestinal tumors were assigned to either the conventional treatment group (Group C) or the fluid treatment group based on FTc (Group F). Within Group F, patients were further divided into Group A (carotid FTc <340.7 ms) and Group B (carotid FTc ≥340.7 ms) based on pre-rehydration carotid FTc values. Group A patients received pre-rehydration with 250 mL of colloids (hydroxyethyl starch-HES) administered within 15 min until carotid FTc reached ≥340.7 ms to counteract hypovolemia prior to induction. Patients in Group B and Group C received a continuous HES infusion at a rate of 6 mL/kg/h 30 min before induction to compensate for physiological fluid loss. All patients received a perioperative background infusion of 3 mL/kg/h compound sodium chloride, with infusion rates optimized based on mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR). The incidence of post-induction hypotension was compared between Group C and Group F, as well as between Group A and Group B. Results: The incidence of hypotension after induction was significantly lower in Group F compared to Group C (26.4% vs. 46.7%, respectively; p < 0.001). Patients in Group A received significantly more pre-rehydration, leading to a greater increase in carotid FTc values compared to Group B (336.5 ± 64.5 vs. 174.3 ± 34.1 ms, p = 0.002). However, no significant difference in carotid FTc values after pre-rehydration was observed between the groups. There was no significant difference in the incidence of hypotension after general anesthesia induction between Group A and Group B (22.9% vs. 28.8%, p = 0.535). Conclusion: Pre-rehydration based on FTc can effectively reduce the occurrence of post-induction hypotension in patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery who present with insufficient volume. The low rehydration properties of commercial soy protein powder (SPI), a major plant-based food ingredient, have limited the development of plant-based foods. The present study proposes a treatment of soy lecithin modification combined with Alcalase hydrolysis to improve the rehydration of soy protein powder, as well as other processing properties (emulsification, viscosity). The results show that the soy protein-soy lecithin complex powder, which is hydrolyzed for 30 min (SPH-SL-30), has the smallest particle size, the smallest zeta potential, the highest surface hydrophobicity, and a uniform microstructure. In addition, the value of the ratio of the α-helical structure/ß-folded structure was the smallest in the SPH-SL-30. After measuring the rehydration properties, emulsification properties, and viscosity, it was found that the SPH-SL-30 has the shortest wetting time of 3.04 min, the shortest dispersion time of 12.29 s, the highest solubility of 93.17%, the highest emulsifying activity of 32.42 m2/g, the highest emulsifying stability of 98.33 min, and the lowest viscosity of 0.98 pa.s. This indicates that the treatment of soy lecithin modification combined with Alcalase hydrolysis destroys the structure of soy protein, changes its physicochemical properties, and improves its functional properties. In this study, soy protein was modified by the treatment of soy lecithin modification combined with Alcalase hydrolysis to improve the processing characteristics of soy protein powders and to provide a theoretical basis for its high-value utilization in the plant-based food field.

BACKGROUND: Goji berries, renowned for their nutritional benefits, are traditionally dried to extend shelf life and preserve quality. However, conventional drying methods often result in uneven drying, color loss and reduced rehydration capacity. This study investigates an innovative hybrid strategy combining ultrasonic-ethyl oleate (US+AEEO) pretreatment with heat pump drying (HPD) to enhance the drying process of Goji berries. RESULTS: Fresh Goji berries underwent US+AEEO pretreatment, which significantly disrupted the waxy layer, enhancing drying efficiency and water infiltration during rehydration. Compared to freeze drying (FD), HPD combined with US+AEEO pretreatment resulted in higher retention of total polyphenol content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) in the Goji soaking soup. Specifically, the HPD-US+AEEO samples exhibited the highest TPC and TFC levels, significantly outperforming FD samples. Additionally, the DPPH and ABTS antioxidant assays demonstrated higher scavenging activities in HPD-US+AEEO samples. The rehydration kinetics revealed that HPD samples had a superior rehydration rate and final moisture content compared to FD samples. Low-field nuclear magnetic resonance and magnetic resonance imaging analyses confirmed enhanced water distribution and higher mobility in HPD-US+AEEO samples. Scanning electron microscopy indicated a more porous structure in US+AEEO-treated samples, facilitating better water absorption and functional component retention. CONCLUSION: The combination of US+AEEO pretreatment with HPD significantly improves the drying process of Goji berries, enhancing nutrient retention, color preservation and rehydration properties. This innovative drying method offers a promising solution for producing high-quality dried Goji berries, benefiting both the food industry and health-conscious consumers. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

PURPOSE: In forensic medicine, maceration is often essential for examining bone surfaces, serving purposes such as identifying cut marks, making geometric measurements, and determining the victim's age. While hot water maceration removes soft tissue effectively, it is known to cause bone surface shrinkage. This raises the question of whether this effect is permanent or if it can be partially reversed through rehydration, considering the presence of soft tissue. METHODS: Computed tomography (CT) scans were conducted on the radii of 20 paired human anatomic forearm specimens. Subsequently, the radii were extracted, macerated in 60 °C water, CT-scanned in an air environment, rehydrated, re-implanted into the forearms, and CT-scanned again. RESULTS: Maceration resulted in a mean shrinkage of 0.12 mm on the outer bone surface. This shrinkage was nearly fully recoverable for the diaphysis after rehydration and accounting for soft tissue surrounding the bone. In contrast, the epiphysis showed permanent shrinkage, likely due to the loss of small bone fragments. Analysis of the inner bone surface indicated a smaller effect, but with significant standard deviations, especially for the epiphysis, possibly related to the less well-defined nature of the inner bone surface. CONCLUSION: The epiphyseal surface of hot water-macerated bone will, on average, be approximately 0.15 mm deflated and cannot retain the original surface. On the other hand, the diaphyseal surface is less affected and can be nearly completely restored after rehydration and accounting for soft tissue surrounding the bone.

BACKGROUND & AIM: Patients with an ileostomy are at increased risk of dehydration and sodium depletion. Treatments recommended may include oral rehydration solutions (ORS). We aimed to investigate if protein type or protein hydrolysation affects absorption from iso-osmolar ORS in patients with an ileostomy. METHODS: This was a randomised, double-blinded, active comparator-controlled 3 × 3 crossover intervention study. We developed three protein-based ORS with whey protein isolate, caseinate or whey protein hydrolysate. The solutions contained 40-48 g protein/L, 34-45 mmol sodium/L and had an osmolality of 248-270 mOsm/kg. The patients ingested 500 mL/d. The study consisted of three 4-week periods with a >2-week washout between each intervention. The primary outcome was wet-weight ileostomy output. Ileostomy output and urine were collected for a 24-h period before and after each intervention. Additionally, blood sampling, dietary records, muscle-strength tests, bioimpedance analyses, questionnaires and psychometric tests were conducted. RESULTS: We included 14 patients, of whom 13 completed at least one intervention. Ten patients completed all three interventions. Wet-weight ileostomy output did not change following either of the three interventions and did not differ between interventions (p = 0.38). A cluster of statistically significant improvements related to absorption was observed following the intake of whey protein isolate ORS, including decreased faecal losses of energy (-365 kJ/d, 95% confidence interval (CI), -643 to -87, p = 0.012), potassium (-7.8 mmol/L, 95%CI, -12.0 to -3.6, p = 0.001), magnesium (-4.0 mmol/L, 95%CI, -7.4 to -0.7, p = 0.020), improved plasma aldosterone (-4674 pmol/L 95%CI, -8536 to -812, p = 0.019), estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) (2.8 mL/min/1.73 m2, 95%CI, 0.3 to 5.4, p = 0.03) and CO2 (1.7 mmol/L 95%CI, 0.1 to 3.3, p = 0.04). CONCLUSION: Ingestion of 500 mL/d of iso-osmolar solutions containing either whey protein isolate, caseinate or whey protein hydrolysate for four weeks resulted in unchanged and comparable ileostomy outputs in patients with an ileostomy. Following whey protein isolate ORS, we observed discrete improvements in a series of absorption proxies in both faeces and blood, indicating increased absorption. The protein-based ORS were safe and well-tolerated. Treatments should be tailored to each patient, and future studies are warranted to explore treatment-effect heterogeneity and whether different compositions or doses of ORS can improve absorption and nutritional status in patients with an ileostomy. Researchers have observed that rainfall may re-initiate decomposition in desiccated tissue; however, no conclusive research-based evidence exists on the specific effects of rehydration on decomposition. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the effects of artificial rehydration on the progression of decomposition following the advanced stage of decomposition. Twelve adult pig cadavers (8 experimental; 4 controls) were placed in the central Highveld of South Africa during cooler (April-July 2021) and warmer (August-November 2021) months. Decomposition was scored approximately biweekly to obtain the total body score, and accumulated degree days (ADD) were calculated for each pig. All pig cadavers were covered by chicken wire cages with transparent tarps to control for natural rehydration and scavenging. Once the experimental pig cadavers reached a three-visit stasis in the advanced phase of decomposition, they were artificially rehydrated, and changes in the progression of decomposition between the control and experimental groups were plotted (ADD against TBS) for observation. The rehydrated experimental pig cadavers showed re-initiation of decay and insect re-colonization, while the control cadavers mainly remained in a state of stasis with insect activity ceased altogether. Greater cadaver decomposition islands and a color change post-rehydration were also noted in some experimental cadavers. This supports the need for future research on the impact of rehydration, including associated soil moisture on decomposition rates, progression, and invertebrate colonization, which will enhance our understanding of the effects these environmental factors have on the accuracy of post-mortem interval estimation.

A direct flow evacuated tube solar dryer (DF_ETSD), a novel drying system, was used for drying pre-treated okra (Abelmoschus esculentus). The performance of DF_ETSD was analysed by determining thermal profiling, dryer and collector efficiency hourly. The maximum 3-day average ambient temperature, collector outlet temperature and solar radiation were 35.6 °C, 66.4 °C and 976 W m-2 respectively. The collector efficiency increased as solar radiation increased over time due to a higher temperature difference between the collector outlet and ambient temperature. The maximum collector and dryer efficiency observed were 30.19% and 21.47%, respectively. A pre-treatment of okra was done in hot water at 70, 80 and 90 °C for 5 min. Okra samples were dried from an initial moisture content of 87.42 ± 1.49% (wb) to a final value of 10.77 ± 1.03% (wb) in 9 h. The pre-treatment temperature of 80 °C is suitable for maximum drying rate, colour retention and rehydration ratio and minimum water activity, which signifies the longer shelf-life of okra. Midilli and Kucuk model was best fitted (highest R2, lowest χ2 and RMSE) for the control and samples pre-treated at 80 °C; however, Verma model was suitably fitted for the sample pre-treated at 70 and 90 °C. The payback period of DF_ETSD was found to be 1.27 years. Environmental analysis shows the CO2 emission and net CO2 mitigation ranged between 1.24 and 18.65 t and 9.86 and 154.05 t respectively for different selected lifecycles of the dryer. Due to its environmental sustainability and low payback period, the presented drying system is recommended for okra and other fruits and vegetables.
