Objective: To evaluate the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, on operating room (OR) efficiency for urologic procedures using the concept of fixed OR times. Patients and Methods: Over a 24-month period, urology OR data were prospectively collected. Operations were divided into fixed and variable time points. The fixed OR times were in-roomw to anesthesia-release time, anesthesia-release to cut time, in-room to cut time, and close to wheels-out time. Data from January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2019, were pre-COVID-19 data, and data from April 1, 2020, to December 31, 2020, were post-COVID-19 data. Operations were grouped into endoscopic, implant, major open, and robotic-assisted cases. In the post-COVID-19 era, all patients had a negative polymerase chain reaction test result within 48 hours of operation. The Wilcoxon rank sum test was used to compare the fixed OR times between the pre- and post-COVID-19 eras. Results: A total of 3189 procedures were evaluated: 2058 endoscopic operations (1124 in the pre-COVID-19 era and 934 in the post-COVID-19 era), 343 implant procedures (192 in the pre-COVID-19 era and 151 in the post-COVID-19 era), 222 major open procedures (119 in the pre-COVID-19 era and 103 in the post-COVID-19 era), and 566 robotic-assisted procedures (338 in the pre-COVID-19 era and 228 in the post-COVID-19 era). There were no fixed OR times in any of the examined groups that were negatively impacted by COVID-19. The percentage of the total OR time occupied by fixed OR variables in the pre-COVID-19 era was 40.6% for endoscopic operations, 41.1% for implant procedures, 29.8% for major open procedures, and 21.8% for robotic-assisted procedures. Conclusion: A substantial portion of the total OR time includes fixed time points. Furthermore, COVID-19 did not have a negative impact on fixed OR times in a negative testing environment. Urologic OR efficiency should be maintained in the post-COVID-19 era.

Sterile males of Aedes aegypti were released once a week for 8 weeks to evaluate the dispersal efficiency of ground and aerial drone release methods in a rural village of 26 Ha in southern Mexico. Indoor and outdoor BG-Sentinel traps were placed in 13−16 houses distributed throughout the village. The BG traps were activated 48 h after the release of the sterile males and functioned for a 24 h period following each release. Over the 8-week period of simultaneous ground and aerial releases, an average of 85,117 ± 6457 sterile males/week were released at ground level and 86,724 ± 6474 sterile males/week were released using an aerial drone. The ground release method resulted in higher numbers of captured males (mean = 5.1 ± 1.4, range 1.1−15.7 sterile males/trap) compared with the aerial release method (mean = 2.6 ± 0.8, range 0.5−7.3 sterile males/trap) (p < 0.05). Similarly, the prevalence of traps that captured at least one sterile male was significantly higher for ground release compared to the aerial release method (p < 0.01). The lower numbers of sterile males captured in the aerial release method could be due to mortality or physical injury caused by the chilling process for immobilization, or the compaction of these insects during transport and release. However, aerial releases by a two-person team distributed insects over the entire village in just 20 min, compared to ~90 min of work for a five-person team during the ground release method. Ground release also resulted in higher aggregations of males and some villagers reported feeling discomfort from the presence of large numbers of mosquitoes in and around their houses. We conclude that modifications to the handling and transport of sterile males and the design of containers used to store males are required to avoid injury and to improve the efficiency of aerial releases for area-wide SIT-based population suppression programs targeted at mosquito vectors of human disease.

Automatic speech recognition (ASR), when combined with hearing-aid (HA) and hearing-loss (HL) simulations, can predict aided speech-identification performances of persons with age-related hearing loss. ASR can thus be used to evaluate different HA configurations, such as combinations of insertion-gain functions and compression thresholds, in order to optimize HA fitting for a given person. The present study investigated whether, after fixing compression thresholds and insertion gains, a random-search algorithm could be used to optimize time constants (i.e., attack and release times) for 12 audiometric profiles. The insertion gains were either those recommended by the CAM2 prescription rule or those optimized using ASR, while compression thresholds were always optimized using ASR. For each audiometric profile, the random-search algorithm was used to vary time constants with the aim to maximize ASR performance. A HA simulator and a HL simulator simulator were used, respectively, to amplify and to degrade speech stimuli according to the input audiogram. The resulting speech signals were fed to an ASR system for recognition. For each audiogram, 1,000 iterations of the random-search algorithm were used to find the time-constant configuration yielding the highest ASR score. To assess the reproducibility of the results, the random search algorithm was run twice. Optimizing the time constants significantly improved the ASR scores when CAM2 insertion gains were used, but not when using ASR-based gains. Repeating the random search yielded similar ASR scores, but different time-constant configurations.

Microcellular injection molding technology (MuCell) using supercritical fluid (SCF) as a foaming agent is one of the important green molding solutions for reducing the part weight, saving cycle time, and molding energy, and improving dimensional stability. In view of the environmental issues, the successful application of MuCell is becoming increasingly important. However, the molding process encounters difficulties including the sliver flow marks on the surface and unstable mechanical properties that are caused by the uneven foaming cell sizes within the part. In our previous studies, gas counter-pressure combined with dynamic molding temperature control was observed to be an effective and promising way of improving product quality. In this study, we extend this concept by incorporating additional parameters, such as gas pressure holding time and release time, and taking the mold cooling speed into account to form a P(pressure)-T(temperature) path in the SCF PT diagram. This study demonstrates the successful control of foaming cell size and uniformity in size distribution in microcellular injection molding of polystyrene (PS). A preliminary study in the molding of elastomer thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) using the P-T path also shows promising results.

Recent research has established a connection between hearing aid (HA) users' cognition and speech recognition performance with short and long compression release times (RT). Contradictive findings prevent researchers from using cognition to predict RT prescription. We hypothesized that the linguistic context of speech recognition test materials was one of the factors that accounted for the inconsistency. The present study was designed to examine the relationship between HA users' cognition and their aided speech recognition performance with short and long RTs using materials with various linguistic contexts. Thirty-four older HA users' cognitive abilities were quantified using a reading span test. They were fitted with behind-the-ear style HAs with adjustable RT settings. Three speech recognition tests were used: the word-in-noise (WIN) test, the American four alternative auditory feature (AFAAF) test, and the Bamford-Kowal-Bench speech-in-noise (BKB-SIN) test. The results showed that HA users with high cognitive abilities performed better on the AFAAF and the BKB-SIN than those with low cognitive abilities when using short RT. None of the speech recognition tests produced significantly different performance between the two RTs for either cognitive group. These findings did not support our hypothesis. The results suggest that cognition might not be important in prescribing RT.

OBJECTIVE: To explore how vocal release time (VRT) varies when young adults articulate the three Chinese vertex vowels with increasingly higher pitch levels. STUDY DESIGN: Sound pressure (SP) and electroglottographic (EGG) signals were recorded synchronously from 53 males and 53 females saying sustained /A/, /i/, /u/ at five equally spaced pitch heights, each being higher than the one before. METHODS: About 3030 effective ST (semitone) and VRT measures were obtained. Statistical analyses of them were done by using SPSS 13.0 and Excel 2010. FINDINGS: As mean STs increase linearly from pitch levels one to five, mean VRTs display a rise-fall pattern in a big group of subjects, but a fall-rise pattern in a small group of them. In both cases, pitch and VRT tend to present a curvilinear relationship, although VRT varies in opposite directions. And also, high vowels tend to have larger VRT than low vowels.

Polymer cholesteric liquid crystal (PCLC) flakes are gaining increasing interest for a wide variety of applications because of their unique optical properties and capabilities. Soft lithography is the most effective way to fabricate regularly shaped PCLC flakes. However, it is not easy to peel the flakes from the mold without breaking them. In order to peel the PCLC flakes from the patterned polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) mold in a convenient way, in this paper, a method of coating a layer of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) on a PDMS mold was proposed. The influence of the thickness of the PVA layer on the shape of the PCLC flakes and the release time from the PDMS mold were investigated. The results show that the presence of the PVA layer can speed up the release of the PCLC flakes and help maintain the shape effectively. Notably, the utilization of a PVA layer makes the PDMS mold recyclable. The influence of PCLC flake shape was also studied. This work will promote the development of switchable PCLC flake-based technologies.

Predicting the release performance of a drug delivery device is an important challenge in pharmaceutics and biomedical science. In this paper, we consider a multi-layer diffusion model of drug release from a composite spherical microcapsule into an external surrounding medium. Based on this model, we present two approaches for estimating the release time, i.e. the time required for the drug-filled capsule to be depleted. Both approaches make use of temporal moments of the drug concentration at the centre of the capsule, which provide useful insight into the timescale of the process and can be computed exactly without explicit calculation of the full transient solution of the multi-layer diffusion model. The first approach, which uses the zeroth and first temporal moments only, provides a crude approximation of the release time taking the form of a simple algebraic expression involving the various parameters in the model (e.g. layer diffusivities, mass transfer coefficients, partition coefficients) while the second approach yields an asymptotic estimate of the release time that depends on consecutive higher moments. Through several test cases, we show that both approaches provide a computationally-cheap and useful tool to quantify the release time of composite microcapsule configurations.

BACKGROUND: To ensure the success of a mosquito control programme that integrates the sterile insect technique (SIT), it is highly desirable to release sterile males with a maximal lifespan to increase release effectiveness. Understanding sterile male survival under field conditions is thus critical for determining the number of males to be released. Our study aimed to investigate the effect of mass rearing, irradiation, chilling, packing and release time on irradiated male mosquito longevity. METHODS: Anopheles arabiensis and Aedes aegypti immature stages were mass-reared using a rack and tray system. Batches of 50 males irradiated at the pupal stage were immobilised, packed into canisters and chilled for 6 hours at 6 °C. Mosquitoes were then transferred either in the early morning or early evening into climate chambers set to simulate the weather conditions, typical of the beginning of the rainy season in Khartoum, Sudan and Juazeiro, Brazil for An. arabiensis and Ae. aegypti, respectively. The longevity of experimental males was assessed and compared to mass-reared control males subjected either to simulated field or laboratory conditions. RESULTS: The combined irradiation, chilling and packing treatments significantly reduced the longevity of both An. arabiensis and Ae. aegypti under simulated field conditions (P < 0.001). However, packing alone did not significantly reduce longevity of Ae. aegypti (P = 0.38) but did in An. arabiensis (P < 0.001). Overall, the longevity of mass reared, irradiated and packed males was significantly reduced, with the median survival time (days) lower following an early morning introduction (4.62 ± 0.20) compared to an evening (7.34 ± 0.35) in An. arabiensis (P < 0.001). However, there was no significant difference in longevity between morning (9.07 ± 0.54) and evening (7.76 ± 0.50) in Ae. aegypti (P = 0.14). CONCLUSIONS: Our study showed that sterile mass-reared males have a reduced lifespan in comparison to laboratory-maintained controls under simulated field conditions, and that An. arabiensis appeared to be more sensitive to the handling process and release time than Ae. aegypti. Longevity and release time are important parameters to be considered for a successful area-wide integrated vector control programme with a SIT component.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Listeners with sensorineural hearing loss want to compensate for their narrow dynamic range from appropriate compression functions of hearing aids. The present study aimed to determine which compression threshold and release time of nonlinear hearing aids might affect speech recognition and speech quality judgments. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Ten elderly listeners with symmetrical moderate-to-severe sensorineural hearing loss participated in the study. To compare two compression threshold (31 dB SPL vs. 61 dB SPL) and two release time (50 ms vs. 500 ms) conditions, subjects' speech recognition was measured using the Korean version of the Hearing in Noise Test in both quiet and noisy situations. All subjects were also asked to rate the degree of speech quality in terms of loudness, sharpness, clarity, and background noise immediately after completing the speech recognition test. RESULTS: Although no significant difference emerged in speech recognition thresholds between the two compression thresholds in the quiet situation, the compression threshold of 31 dB SPL showed a lower (or better) signal-to-noise ratio of speech recognition compared to that of 61 dB SPL. The release times of 50 and 500 ms did not statistically differ in both quiet and noisy situations. Subjective categories were found to be louder and clearer in the 50 ms release time for quiet and noisy, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: We expect that these patterns of current results will apply for better-fitting protocol of elderly Korean hearing aid users.
