RESUMO

Recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) is an effective therapeutic drug for improving short stature. Currently, rhGH can be used for various causes of short stature, including growth hormone deficiency, and the expansion of its clinical application has raised concerns about its safety. Based on existing evidence, when rhGH is used in a standardized manner for physiological replacement therapy, its safety profile is favorable. In clinical practice, attention should be focused on short-term safety during rhGH treatment, with the combination of literature evidence and clinical experience. There is still no definitive conclusion on the long-term safety due to insufficient duration of rhGH treatment. This paper reviews the possible adverse events that may occur during rhGH treatment and their risk control measures, aiming to help clinical physicians understand the overall safety of rhGH treatment and improve its clinical standardization.

The global obesity problem is becoming increasingly serious, with eight of the top ten causes of death in Taiwan in 2020 being related to obesity. Morbid obesity poses a significant threat to one's health and well-being. In recent years, bariatric surgery has emerged as a more effective treatment option for patients with morbid obesity. However, the procedure is not without risks. This study aims to examine the factors that impact the postoperative efficacy evaluation of patients with morbid obesity. This study uses a retrospective cross-sectional design, with medical records being collected retrospectively. The data was collected from patients who underwent bariatric surgery between July 1, 2017 and June 30, 2020 at a hospital in southern Taiwan. A total of 663 patients were included in the study and were observed for 1 year after the surgery. The independent variables included demographic variables, perceived symptoms variables, perceived lifestyle variables, and surgery-related variables, while the dependent variables included weight loss outcomes and complications. The prognostic factors affecting the postoperative efficacy evaluation of patients with pathological obesity were determined using multiple regression analysis and binary regression analysis. The study found that 65.6% of the participants were female, with an average age of 36.8 years. The results of the multiple regression and binary logistic regression showed that gender, age, BMI, diabetes, and smoking habit were the predictors of postoperative weight loss. Hypertension, diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease, smoking habit, drinking habit, and operation time were the predictors of postoperative complications. The study found that the presence of the aforementioned 12 significant factors can affect the success of weight loss after surgery and the incidence of postoperative complications. This information can serve as a reference for clinical care institutions and patients to improve the postoperative efficacy evaluation.

RESUMO

The catalytic conversion of carbon dioxide is one of the important ways to achieve the goal of carbon neutralization, which can be further divided into electrocatalysis, thermal catalysis, and photocatalysis. Although photocatalysis and electrocatalysis have the advantages of mild reaction conditions and low energy consumption, the thermal catalytic conversion of CO2 has larger processing capacity, better reduction effect, and more complete industrial foundation, which is a promising technology in the future. During the development of new technology from laboratory to industrial application, ensuring the safety of production process is essential. In this work, safety optimization design of equipment, safety performance of catalysts, accident types, and their countermeasures in the industrial applications of CO2 to methanol are reviewed and discussed in depth. Based on that, future research demands for industrial process safety of CO2 to methanol were proposed, which provide guidance for the large-scale application of CO2 thermal catalytic conversion technology.

Contamination of groundwater with chlorinated hydrocarbons has serious adverse effects on human health. As research efforts in this area have expanded, a large body of literature has accumulated. However, traditional review writing suffers from limitations regarding efficiency, quantity, and timeliness, making it difficult to achieve a comprehensive and up-to-date understanding of developments in the field. There is a critical need for new tools to address emerging research challenges. This study evaluated 1619 publications related to this field using VOSviewer and CiteSpace visual tools. An extensive quantitative analysis and global overview of current research hotspots, as well as potential future research directions, were performed by reviewing publications from 2000 to 2022. Over the last 22 years, the USA has produced the most articles, making it the central country in the international collaboration network, with active cooperation with the other 7 most productive countries. Additionally, institutions have played a positive role in promoting the publication of science and technology research. In analyzing the distribution of institutions, it was found that the University of Waterloo conducted the majority of research in this field. This paper also identified the most productive journals, Environmental Science & Technology and Applied and Environmental Microbiology, which published 11,988 and 3253 scientific articles over the past 22 years, respectively. The main technologies are bioremediation and chemical reduction, which have garnered growing attention in academic publishing. Our findings offer a useful resource and a worldwide perspective for scientists engaged in this field, highlighting both the challenges and the possibilities associated with addressing groundwater chlorinated solvent plumes remediation.

Prepared foods bring great convenience to people's lives, but they also entail safety risks in all aspects, from production to sales. The cooperation of the supply chain and the supervision of the government are key to promoting the safety management of prepared foods. This paper considers the government's regulation, focuses on the interaction relationship between the producer and the retailer of prepared foods, and builds an evolutionary game model to analyze the influence of collaborative decision-making between prepared food producers and retailers in preventing and controlling food safety risks under the government's regulatory strategy. The research finds that: (1) Under certain conditions, there are three stable equilibrium strategies within the prepared foods supply chain: bilateral low-safety inputs, unilateral high-safety inputs, and bilateral high-safety inputs. (2) Government regulators can influence the safety input behaviors of prepared food supply chain enterprises by adjusting investigation probabilities and punishment severity. (3) The safety input behaviors of these enterprises are influenced by various factors, including costs, revenues, brand image, reputation, and the consequences associated with contractual violations. This paper represents the first systematic analysis of prepared food safety from a supply chain perspective. It fills a gap in the existing literature in this area, offering guidance and suggestions for prepared food supply chain enterprises, as well as references and recommendations for government regulators.

Estuaries serve as crucial filters for land-based pollutants to the open sea, but there is a lack of information on the migration and fate of organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) within estuaries. This study focused on the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) by examining the co-occurrence of OPFRs and their metabolites and quantifying their transport fluxes using a mass balance model. The seawater concentrations of OPFRs and their metabolites exhibited significant seasonal variations (p < 0.01), while the sediment concentrations of OPFRs reflected the long-term distributional equilibrium in the PRE. The concentration of Σ9OPFRs in seawater showed a relentless dilution from the entrance to the offshore region in the normal and wet seasons, which was significantly in accordance with the gradients of pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and salinity (p < 0.05). Furthermore, horizontal migration dominated the transport of OPFRs, and the inventory assessment revealed that both the water column and sediment were important reservoirs in the PRE. According to the estimated fluxes from the mass balance model, riverine input emerged as the principal pathway for OPFR entry into the PRE (1.55 × 105, 6.28 × 104, and 9.00 × 104 kg/yr in the normal, dry and wet seasons, respectively), whereas outflow to the open sea predominantly determined the main fates of the OPFRs. The risk quotient (RQ) results showed that EHDPHP (0.835) in water posed medium ecological risk, while other OPFRs and metabolites presented relatively lower risk (RQ < 0.1). The risk control effects were evaluated through scenario simulations of mathematical fitting between controllable source factors and the RQ of risky OPFR. The risk of EHDPHP in the PRE could be effectively reduced by restricting its concentrations in entrance region (<9.31, 8.67, and 12.7 ng/L in the normal, dry and wet seasons, respectively) of the PRE. This research offers foundational insights into environmental management and pollution control strategies for emerging pollutants in estuaries.

Transfusion of bacterially contaminated platelets, although rare, is still a major cause of mortality and morbidity despite the introduction of many methods to limit this over the past 20 years. The methods used include improved donor skin disinfection, diversion of the first part of donations, use of apheresis platelet units rather than whole-blood derived pools, primary and secondary testing by culture or rapid test, and use of pathogen reduction. Primary culture has been in use the US since 2004, using culture 24 h after collection of volumes of 4-8 mL from apheresis collections and whole-blood derived pools inoculated into aerobic culture bottles, with limited use of secondary testing by culture or rapid test to extend shelf-life from 5 to 7 days. Primary culture was introduced in the UK in 2011 using a "large-volume, delayed sampling" (LVDS) protocol requiring culture 36-48 h after collection of volumes of 16 mL from split apheresis units and whole-blood derived pools, inoculated into aerobic and anaerobic culture bottles (8 mL each), with a shelf-life of 7 days. Pathogen reduction using amotosalen has been in use in Europe since 2002, and was approved for use in the US in 2014. In the US, recent FDA guidance, effective October 2021, recommended several strategies to limit bacterial contamination of platelet products, including pathogen reduction, variants of the UK LVDS method and several two-step strategies, with shelf-life ranging from 3 to 7 days. The issues associated with bacterial contamination and these strategies are discussed in this review.

This study investigated how a standard could become reality-based in a workplace where certain types of deviations are not permitted, such as a radiopharmaceutical production unit. Compliance with standards is necessary to ensure the safety of individuals who manufacture such substances as well as the security of patients receiving treatment. In this qualitative case study, an ergonomic analysis of work (also known as activity analysis) was performed, with noncompliance recorded in internal audits as a starting point: the lack of double-checking in radiopharmaceutical synthesis cassette assembly. Field observations and self-confrontation interviews with workers from a production unit were conducted to analyze the activities. Although a double-check did not occur, the radiopharmaceutical synthesis operator apparently developed another risk control strategy, focusing his attention to the equipment assembly details, which necessitated continuous control and verification actions to ensure that there were no problems at this stage of production. A multilevel approach was used to demonstrate how the safety and quality of production processes based on standard compliance only become effective and adherent to the activity after resolving various conflicts at work, including control systems (external and internal audits), work collectives, the contradiction of the activity itself, and the discussion of singular situations arising daily. This study contributes to the discussion on workplace safety considering standardization and advances the discussion on changing perspectives regarding rule compliance.

Information-driven mission abort is an effective way to control the failure risk of safety-critical systems during mission executions. We investigate the optimal sampling and mission abort decisions of partially observable safety-critical systems, where the underlying system health state can only be revealed by sampling. In contrast to previous studies, we employ partial health information to jointly determine: (a) whether to execute sampling, and (b) when to abort the mission in a dynamic manner, so as to minimize the expected total cost incurred by sampling, mission failure, and system malfunction. Dynamic sampling and mission abort policies are devised following the belief state, whose optimization model is cast into the framework of a partially observable Markov decision process. Some structural insights with regard to the value function, control limit selection, and optimality existence are presented. The performance of the proposed sampling and abort policy is tested by numerical experiments, which are proved to outperform other heuristic abort policies in mission loss control.

Chain conflicts would cause chain-reaction crashes, which might result in elevated fatality rates. Chain conflicts describe a phenomenon wherein evasive actions taken by a following vehicle's driver after a conflict impact nearby vehicles, which occur frequently but are reported less often. To effectively reduce conflict risk, comprehending the evolution patterns of chain conflicts under varied traffic conditions and road segments is crucial, in order to make chain conflicts management strategies. Initially, rear-end or sideswipe conflicts between two vehicles are identified based on vehicle trajectory data captured by an unmanned aerial vehicle group. Subsequently, a chain conflict identification algorithm is proposed, considering the randomness of occurrence time and fluctuation of impact duration, to link individual conflicts. Chain conflict rates exhibit significant variations across different road segments under diverse traffic conditions. Multiple risk and propagation indicators are extracted to unveil latent characteristics of chain conflicts from a high-level perspective. Based on prominent characteristic disparities, three evolution patterns are identified, i.e., Longitudinal Risk Decrease Pattern, Longitudinal Risk Increase Pattern, and Comprehensive High-risk Persistent Pattern. Spatial-temporal high-risk areas associated with each pattern are determined, and transition probabilities between patterns are calculated. The results indicate that these patterns tend to remain stable, with transitions mainly occurring from low-risk to high-risk patterns. Moreover, strategies to reduce conflict risk are proposed based on the characteristics of different patterns. This study holds great significance in understanding chain conflict evolution patterns and preventing chain-reaction crashes.

It is important to understand the spatial distribution characteristics and health risks of soil heavy metals for the implementation of soil pollution control measures in different levels and regions. Based on the data of 706 core studies in the last 20 years, the spatial distribution characteristics, accumulation degree, and health risks of soil heavy metals in China were analyzed at the provincial level. The results showed that the soil heavy metals had obvious spatial differences on the provincial scale, with an overall trend of "high in the south and low in the north and high in the east and low in the west." The content of heavy metals in the soil of agricultural land and construction land was high, and the rate of exceeding the standard was higher than that of other land types. Soil heavy metal concentrations in most areas of China were higher than the regional background values and were highly cumulative. The accumulation indices were:Cd(1.80)>Pb(0.23)>Cu(0.17)>Zn(-0.05)>As(-0.56)>Cr(-0.69), with more than 85% of the provincial soils reaching moderate levels of Cd pollution. Non-ferrous metal resource-based provinces such as Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Hunan, and Jiangxi generally had higher soil heavy metal levels than those in other provinces, and local children faced higher cancer risks. Soil pollution in coastal areas such as Fujian, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Tianjin mainly originated from industrial production and urbanization construction. High intensity agricultural utilization was an important cause of soil heavy metal accumulation in Henan, Shandong, and Anhui.

Asbestos has been confirmed as a major pollutant in asbestos-mining areas that are located in western China. In general, asbestos-fibre dust will is released into the environment due to the effect of intensive industrial activities and improper environmental management, such that the health of residents in and around mining areas is jeopardised. A typical asbestos mining area served as an example in this study to analyse the content and fibre morphology of asbestos in soil and air samples in the mining area. The effects of asbestos pollution in and around the mining areas on human health were also assessed based on the U.S. Superfund Risk Assessment Framework in this study. As indicated by the results, different degrees of asbestos pollutions were present in the soil and air, and they were mainly concentrated in the mining area, the ore-dressing area, and the waste pile. The concentration of asbestos in the soil ranged from 0.3% to 91.92%, and the concentration of asbestos fibres in the air reached 0.008-0.145 f·cc-1. The results of the scanning-electron microscope (SEM) energy suggested that the asbestos was primarily strip-shaped, short columnar, and granular, and the asbestos morphology of the soils with higher degrees of pollution exhibited irregular strip-shaped fibre agglomeration. The excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR) associated with the asbestos fibres in the air of the mining area was at an acceptable level (10-4-10-6), and 40.6% of the monitoring sites were subjected to unacceptable non-carcinogenic risks (HQ > 1). Moreover, the waste pile was the area with the highest non-carcinogenic risk, followed by the ore dressing area, a residential area, and a bare-land area in descending order. In the three scenarios of adult offices or residences in the mining area, adults' outdoor activities in the peripheral residence areas, and children's outdoor activities, the carcinogenic-and non-carcinogenic-risk-control values in the air reached 0.1438, 0.2225 and 0.1540 f·cc-1, and 0.0084, 0.0090 and 0.0090 f·cc-1, respectively. The results of this study will lay a scientific basis for the environmental management and governance of asbestos polluted sites in China.

This mixed method study aimed to describe what risk-reducing actions were proposed by ergonomists after the execution of a guided process for occupational health surveillance for workers exposed to hand-intensive work in ten companies. Another aim was to describe the exposed workers' proposals for risk-reducing actions, including their perceptions of potential changes in the self-assessed exposure levels and work-related pain. Several actions, targeting organizational, technical, and/or individual measures were proposed. Proposals from the ergonomists more often targeted the personal measures, whereas the workers' proposals targeted technology or organizational changes. Six companies implemented at least one of the action proposals. These action proposals were not related to evaluation metrics, nor were they evaluated. This study indicates that both ergonomists and companies need guidance on how to improve to work in a participatory process for the implementation and evaluation of risk-reducing actions, e.g., by how to better include workers' experiences.

Este estudo tem por objetivo avaliar a evolução do grau de incapacidade física e do escore olhos, mãos e pés, do diagnóstico à alta medicamentosa, segundo as variáveis sociodemográficas e clínicas, em pacientes diagnosticados com hanseníase. Trata-se de estudo transversal, baseado na análise de 71 pacientes com diagnóstico de hanseníase, acompanhados no Hospital Eduardo de Menezes, centro de referência em Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brasil, entre janeiro de 2017 a dezembro de 2020. Foi observado predomínio do sexo feminino (53,5%), média de idade de 46 anos, sendo a maioria procedente de outros municípios do interior de Minas Gerais (54,9%). A forma clínica mais frequente foi a dimorfa (64,8%), classificação operacional multibacilar (84,5%). O grau de incapacidade física 0 foi o mais prevalente no diagnóstico (56,5%) e na alta (53,1%), e em relação ao escore olhos, mãos e pés, houve variação entre 0 e 10 no diagnóstico e entre 0 e 8 na alta. Pelo teste de McNemar foi observado que dentre os pacientes que apresentavam algum grau de incapacidade física no momento do diagnóstico, 30,8% apresentaram ausência de incapacidade na alta. Ao comparar a evolução do grau de incapacidade física de paucibacilares e multibacilares no momento do diagnóstico e da alta, houve manutenção em 59,3% e melhora em 17,2% dos pacientes. Os dados apresentados indicam que muitos pacientes foram tratados tardiamente já apresentando as formas graves e com sequelas, já que o estudo foi desenvolvido em um centro de referência, que atende casos mais complexos e com complicações já instaladas. Os dados sugerem que pacientes assistidos que realizam o tratamento com poliquimioterapia podem ter melhora das incapacidades já instaladas. O mesmo ocorreu com o escore olhos, mãos e pés, que ao final do tratamento instituído houve melhora se comparado com a admissão.(AU)


This study aims to evaluate the evolution of the degree of physical disability and the eye, hand and foot score, from diagnosis to medication discharge, according to sociodemographic and clinical variables, in patients diagnosed with leprosy. This is a cross-sectional study, based on the analysis of 71 patients diagnosed with leprosy, followed by Hospital Eduardo de Menezes, a reference center in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, between January 2017 and December 2020. There was a predominance of females (53.5%), average age of 46 years old, the majority coming from other municipalities in the interior of Minas Gerais (54.9%). The most frequent clinical form was borderline (64.8%), multibacillary operational classification (84.5%). Degree of physical disability 0 was the most prevalent at diagnosis (56.5%) and at discharge (53.1%); in relation to the eye, hand and foot score, there was variation between 0 and 10 at diagnosis and between 0 and 8 at discharge. By the McNemar test, it was observed that of the patients who had degree of physical disability at the time of diagnosis, 30.8% had no disability at discharge. When comparing the evolution of the GIF in paucibacillary and multibacillary patients at the time of diagnosis and discharge, there was maintenance in 59.3% and improvement in 17.2% of the patients. The presented data indicates that many patients were treated late, already presenting severe forms and with sequelae, since the study was carried out in a reference center, which treats cases with complications already installed and more complex cases. The data suggest that assisted patients undergoing treatment with multidrug therapy may experience improvement in disabilities already established. The same occurred with eye, hand and foot score, at the end of the established treatment there was an improvement compared to admission.(AU)

Background: Pharmaceutical drug recall is a relentless issue that is composed of multidimensional criteria. The distinct criteria that contributed to drug recalls have been identified in previous literature; however, there is limited information regarding the causal relationships between each criterion. Highlighting key influential aspects and criteria of pharmaceutical drug recall is critical in addressing this ongoing issue and promoting patient safety. Objective: The objective of this study is as follows: (1) identify critical criteria of pharmaceutical drug recalls for improvements, (2) determine the interrelationships among the criteria, and (3) define the causal relationships of pharmaceutical drug recall and provide theoretical insights and practice recommendations to minimize risks associated with pharmaceutical recalls and maximize patient safety. Design: This study proposes five aspects and 42 criteria to identify the impact of pharmaceutical drug recalls on patient safety by evaluating the interrelationships between the criteria by employing the fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory method. Methods: A group of 11 professionals across the pharmaceutical industry, hospitals, ambulatory care, regulatory authority, and community care settings were selected for interviews. Results: Risk control is the influencing aspect of pharmaceutical drug recalls that has the most substantial impact on risk assessment and risk review; it generates medium effects on risk communication and technology. Risk assessment, risk communication, and risk review demonstrated comparative weak interrelationships, while risk communication exhibits a weak unidirectional effect on risk review. Finally, risk assessment exerts a weak influence on technology application and development. Product contamination, product subpotent or superpotent, injury to patients, product not sterile or impure, and system detectability of hazards have the strongest influence in the causal group of pharmaceutical drug recalls. Conclusion: The study shows that risk control drives risk assessment and risk review in the pharmaceutical industry manufacturing process. To achieve patient safety, this study suggests focusing on risk control strategies, as this aspect displays the most substantial effect on influencing other critical risk management aspects such as risk assessment and risk review.

This article discusses the concept and applications of cognitive dynamic systems (CDS), which are a type of intelligent system inspired by the brain. There are two branches of CDS, one for linear and Gaussian environments (LGEs), such as cognitive radio and cognitive radar, and another one for non-Gaussian and nonlinear environments (NGNLEs), such as cyber processing in smart systems. Both branches use the same principle, called the perception action cycle (PAC), to make decisions. The focus of this review is on the applications of CDS, including cognitive radios, cognitive radar, cognitive control, cyber security, self-driving cars, and smart grids for LGEs. For NGNLEs, the article reviews the use of CDS in smart e-healthcare applications and software-defined optical communication systems (SDOCS), such as smart fiber optic links. The results of implementing CDS in these systems are very promising, with improved accuracy, performance, and lower computational costs. For example, CDS implementation in cognitive radars achieved a range estimation error that is as good as 0.47 (m) and a velocity estimation error of 3.30 (m/s), outperforming traditional active radars. Similarly, CDS implementation in smart fiber optic links improved the quality factor by 7 dB and the maximum achievable data rate by 43% compared to those of other mitigation techniques.

A construction site has specific risks and organizational conditions requiring on-site safety inspections. Paperwork inspections have important limitations that can be overcome by substituting paper records with digital registers and using new information and communication technologies. Although academic literature has provided several tools to carry out on-site safety inspections adopting new technologies, most construction sites are not currently ready to adopt them. This paper covers this need of on-site control by providing an application that uses a simple technology accessible to most construction companies. The main objective and contribution of this paper is to design, develop, and implement a mobile device application (App), named "RisGES". It is based on the model of risk that grounds the Construction Site Risk Assessment Tool (CONSRAT) and on the related models that connect risk with specific organizational and safety resources. This proposed application is aimed to assess the on-site risk and organizational structure by using new technologies and considering all relevant resources and material safety conditions. The paper includes practical examples of how to use RisGES in real settings. Evidence for the discriminant validity of CONSRAT is also provided. The RisGES tool is at once preventive and predictive since it yields a specific set of criteria for interventions intended to decrease the levels of risks on-site, as well as to detect improvement needs in the site structure and resources for increasing the safety levels.

Multiple control strategies, including a downstream purification process with well-controlled parameters and a comprehensive release or characterization for intermediates or drug substances, were implemented to mitigate the potential risk of host cell proteins (HCPs) in one concentrated fed-batch (CFB) mode manufactured product. A host cell process specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method was developed for the quantitation of HCPs. The method was fully validated and showed good performance including high antibody coverage. This was confirmed by 2D Gel-Western Blot analysis. Furthermore, a LC-MS/MS method with non-denaturing digestion and a long gradient chromatographic separation coupled with data dependent acquisition (DDA) on a Thermo/QE-HF-X mass spectrometer was developed as an orthogonal method to help identify the specific types of HCPs in this CFB product. Because of the high sensitivity, selectivity and adaptability of the new developed LC-MS/MS method, significantly more species of HCP contaminants were able to be identified. Even though high levels of HCPs were observed in the harvest bulk of this CFB product, the development of multiple processes and analytical control strategies may greatly mitigate potential risks and reduce HCPs contaminants to a very low level. No high-risk HCP was identified and the total amount of HCPs was very low in the CFB final product.

CO2-based infection risk monitoring is highly recommended during the current COVID-19 pandemic. However, the CO2 monitoring thresholds proposed in the literature are mainly for spaces with fixed occupants. Determining CO2 threshold is challenging in spaces with changing occupancy due to the co-existence of quanta and CO2 remaining from previous occupants. Here, we propose a new calculation framework for deriving safe excess CO2 thresholds (above outdoor level), C t, for various spaces with fixed/changing occupancy and analyze the uncertainty involved. We categorized common indoor spaces into three scenarios based on their occupancy conditions, e.g., fixed or varying infection ratios (infectors/occupants). We proved that the rebreathed fraction-based model can be applied directly for deriving C t in the case of a fixed infection ratio (Scenario 1 and Scenario 2). In the case of varying infection ratios (Scenario 3), C t derivation must follow the general calculation framework due to the existence of initial quanta/excess CO2. Otherwise, C t can be significantly biased (e.g., 260 ppm) when the infection ratio varies greatly. C t can vary significantly based on specific space factors such as occupant number, physical activity, and community prevalence, e.g., 7 ppm for gym and 890 ppm for lecture hall, indicating C t must be determined on a case-by-case basis. An uncertainty of up to 6 orders of magnitude for C t was found for all cases due to uncertainty in emissions of quanta and CO2, thus emphasizing the role of accurate emissions data in determining C t.

Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) is a highly carcinogenic pollutant of global concern. There is a need for a comprehensive assessment of regulation decisions for BaP-contaminated site management. Herein, we present a quantitative evaluation of remediation decisions from 206 contaminated sites throughout China between 2011 and 2021 using the cumulative distribution function (CDF) and related statistical methodologies. Generally, remediation decisions seek to establish remediation goals (RGs) based on the risk control values (RCVs). Cumulative frequency distributions, followed non-normal S-curve, emerged multiple nonrandom clusters. These clusters are consistent with regulatory guidance values (RGVs), of national and local soil levels in China. Additionally, priority interventions for contaminated sites were determined by prioritizing RCVs and identifying differences across industrial sectors. Notably, we found that RCVs and RGs became more relaxed over time, effectively reducing conservation and unsustainable social and economic impacts. The joint probability curve was applied to model decision values, which afforded a generic empirically important RG of 0.57 mg/kg. Overall, these findings will help decision-makers and governments develop appropriate remediation strategies for BaP as a ubiquitous priority pollutant.
