BACKGROUND: Enhancing productivity and profitability and reducing climatic risk are the major challenges for sustaining rice production. Extreme weather can have significant and varied effects on crops, influencing agricultural productivity, crop yields and food security. RESULTS: In this study, a comparative evaluation of two crop management systems was performed involving farmers adopting a weather forecast-based advisory service (WFBAS) and usual farmers' practice (FP). WFBAS crop management followed the generated weather forecast-based advice whereas the control farmers (FP) did not receive any weather forecast-based advice, rather following their usual rice cultivation practices. The results of the experiments revealed that WFBAS farmers had a significant yield advantage over FP farmers. With the WFBAS technology, the farmers used inputs judiciously, utilized the benefit of favorable weather and minimized the risk resulting from extreme weather events. As a result, besides the yield enhancement, WFBAS provided a scope to protect the environment with the minimum residual effect of fertilizer and pesticides. It also reduced the pressure on groundwater by ensuring efficient water management. Finally, the farmers benefited from higher income through yield enhancement, reduction of the costs of production and reduction of risk. CONCLUSION: A successful and extensive implementation of WFBAS in the rice production system would assist Bangladesh in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2.4, which focuses on rice productivity and profitability of farmers as well as long-term food security of the country. © 2023 The Authors. How to improve the yield of crops has always been the focus of breeding research. Due to the population growth and global climate change, the demand for food has increased sharply, which has brought great challenges to agricultural production. In order to make up for the limitation of global cultivated land area, it is necessary to further improve the output of crops. Photosynthesis is the main source of plant assimilate accumulation, which has a profound impact on the formation of its yield. This review focuses on the cultivation of high light efficiency plants, introduces the main technical means and research progress in improving the photosynthetic efficiency of plants, and discusses the main problems and difficulties faced by the cultivation of high light efficiency plants. At the same time, in view of the frequent occurrence of high-temperature disasters caused by global warming, which seriously threatened plant normal production, we reviewed the response mechanism of plants to heat stress, introduced the methods and strategies of how to cultivate heat tolerant crops, especially rice, and briefly reviewed the progress of heat tolerant research at present. Given big progress in these area, the era of cultivating smart rice with high light efficiency and heat tolerance has come of age.

Climate change (CC) is an urgent and highly relevant topic that must be integrated into the school curriculum. Literature on CC integration, however, is scarce, let alone literature on integrating climate-smart rice agriculture (CSRA). Bringing CSRA lessons into the classroom means the chance is higher that climate-smart technologies on rice will reach even the most far-flung areas of the Philippines, which stand to be among the most vulnerable as regards the negative impacts of CC. This paper shares experiences drawn from three high schools in the Philippines on integrating CSRA into their curriculum. The research centers on appropriate teaching tools/strategies, push and exogenous factors in CSRA integration, and the types of information that are likely to be shared by the students with their farmer-parents or other farmers in their communities. Surveys among participating students (n = 155) and three focus group discussions among key school officials were conducted. Different teaching methods and/or tools were found to be generally useful in various contexts. Photos and videos, however, emerged as the most effective tools across sites. The livelihood source of the students does have a bearing on the complexity of messages that they can convey. Students from rice-farming households can competently discuss even highly complex adaptation and mitigation information with their farmer-parents or other farmers. Thorough message-framing is necessary to maximize student involvement as well as to increase production of education-entertainment (edutainment) materials to be utilized in teaching. This study, in general, contributes to CC education by bringing in best-fit practices in teaching tools and strategies to mobilize students to act on urgent matters relating to the impacts of CC. It also advises on considering exogenous factors that might affect CC education by taking into account those that are equally capable of shaping students' perception and knowledge.
