RESUMO

Technology use associated with habitual posture is linked with the decline in mental well-being. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of posture improvement through game play. 73 children and adolescents were recruited, and accelerometer data collected through game play was analyzed. The data analysis reveals that the game/app affects and encourages upright/vertical posture.

BACKGROUND: To determine the 12-month compliance with and retention of home monitoring (HM) with Melbourne Rapid Fields (MRFh) for patients with intermediate age-related macular degeneration (iAMD) and compare visual acuity (VA) and retinal sensitivity (RS) results to clinical measures. METHODS: Participants were recruited to a 12-month HM study with weekly testing of vision with MRFh. Inclusion criteria were a diagnosis of iAMD, understand English instructions, VA ≥ 20/40, and access to an iPad. Supervised in-clinic testing of high contrast VA (HVA, ETDRS), low-luminance VA (LLVA, ETDRS with ND2 filter), and RS (Macular Integrity Assessment, MAIA, and MRF in-clinic, MRFc) was conducted every 6-months. RESULTS: A total of 54 participants (67 ± 6.8 years) were enrolled. Compliance to weekly HM was 61% and study retention at 12-months was 50% of those with uptake (n = 46). No difference was observed between MRFc and MRFh across all RS and VA outcomes (p > 0.05). MRFh RS was higher than MAIA (29.1 vs. 27.1 dB, p < 0.001). MRFh HVA was not different from ETDRS (p = 0.08), but LLVA was 9 letters better (81.5 vs. 72.4 letters, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Over 12-months, MRFh yields a moderate level of compliance with (61%) and retention (50%) of weekly testing. Further studies are required to assess the ability of MRFh to detect early progression to nAMD.

Background: Our primary aim is to quantify test reliability and compliance of glaucoma patients to a weekly visual field telemedicine (VFTM) schedule. A secondary aim is to determine concordance of the VFTM results to in-clinic outcomes. Methods: Participants with stable glaucoma in one eye were recruited for a 12 month VFTM trial using the Melbourne Rapid Fields (MRF-home, MRFh) iPad application. Participants attended routine 6 month clinical reviews and were tasked with weekly home monitoring with the MRFh over this period. We determined compliance to weekly VFTM (7 + 1 days) and test reliability (false positives (FPs) and fixation loss (FL) <33%). A secondary aim considered concordance to in-clinic measures of visual field (MRF-clinic (MRFc) and the Humphrey Field Analyzer (HFA)) in active participants (≥10 home examinations and 5 reliable HFA examinations). The linear trend in the MRFh mean deviation (MD) was compared to the HFA guided progression analysis (GPA) using Bland−Altman methods. Data are shown as the mean ± standard deviation. Results: Forty-seven participants with a mean age of 64 ± 14.6 years were recruited for the trial. The VFTM uptake was 85% and compliance to weekly home monitoring was 75% in the presence of weekly text reminders in the analysed group (n = 20). The analysed group was composed of test subjects with five reliable in-clinic HFA examinations (GPA analysis available) and who submitted a minimum of 10 MRFh examinations from home. Of the 757 home examinations returned, approximately two-thirds were reliable, which was significantly lower than the test reliability of the HFA in-clinic (MRFh: 65% vs. HFA: 85%, p < 0.001). The HFA-GPA analysis gave little bias from the MRFh slope (bias: 0.05 dB/yr, p > 0.05). Two eyes were found to have clinical progression during the 12 month period, and both were detected by VFTM. Conclusions: VFTM over 12 months returned good compliance (75%) to weekly testing with good concordance to in-clinic assays. VFTM is a viable option for monitoring patients with glaucoma for visual field progression in between clinical visits.

PURPOSE: To assess the performance of artificial intelligence in the automated classification of images taken with a tablet device of patients with blepharoptosis and subjects with normal eyelid. METHODS: This is a prospective and observational study. A total of 1276 eyelid images (624 images from 347 blepharoptosis cases and 652 images from 367 normal controls) from 606 participants were analyzed. In order to obtain a sufficient number of images for analysis, 1 to 4 eyelid images were obtained from each participant. We developed a model by fully retraining the pre-trained MobileNetV2 convolutional neural network. Subsequently, we verified whether the automatic diagnosis of blepharoptosis was possible using the images. In addition, we visualized how the model captured the features of the test data with Score-CAM. k-fold cross-validation (k = 5) was adopted for splitting the training and validation. Sensitivity, specificity, and the area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic curve for detecting blepharoptosis were examined. RESULTS: We found the model had a sensitivity of 83.0% (95% confidence interval [CI], 79.8-85.9) and a specificity of 82.5% (95% CI, 79.4-85.4). The accuracy of the validation data was 82.8%, and the AUC was 0.900 (95% CI, 0.882-0.917). CONCLUSION: Artificial intelligence was able to classify with high accuracy images of blepharoptosis and normal eyelids taken using a tablet device. Thus, the diagnosis of blepharoptosis with a tablet device is possible at a high level of accuracy. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Date of registration: 2021-06-25. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: UMIN000044660. RESUMO

Identifying preferred content on tablet devices may be important when using such devices in programming. This study included six adults with disabilities and examined using laminated picture cards depicting application (app) icons to conduct multiple-stimulus without replacement (MSWO) preference assessments of iPad content. Following identification of preference hierarchies, we conducted reinforcer assessments to validate preference assessment results by demonstrating that selected apps functioned as reinforcers. We identified preference hierarchies for all participants, and the highest preferred app functioned as a reinforcer for a vocational task in five out of six participants' reinforcer assessments.

BACKGROUND: Men score higher on mental rotation tasks compared to women and suffer from depression and anxiety at half the rate of women. The objective of this study was to confirm the gender-specific effects of depression and anxiety on mental rotation performance. METHODS: We collected data in non-experimental conditions from 325 university students at three universities. Participants completed rating scales of depressive and anxiety symptoms, and then simultaneously performed a mental rotation task using tablet devices. RESULTS: We observed no significant difference between men and women in the depressive and anxiety symptoms and task response time. Men had a significantly higher correct answer rate compared with women. The scores of depression and anxiety of all participants were positively correlated. Task response time correlated positively with intensity of depressive symptoms and anxiety in women, but not in men. Women with high depressive symptoms had significantly longer response times than did women with low depressive symptoms, while men had no differences due to depressive symptoms. LIMITATIONS: We did not directly examine brain functions; therefore, the underlying neurobiological results are only based on previous knowledge and action data. CONCLUSIONS: The pathology of depression and anxiety was reflected in the correct answer rate and response time in relation to the gender difference of brain function used in mental rotation.

Mobile phones and tablet computers may be contaminated with micro-organisms and become a potential reservoir for cross-transmission of pathogens between healthcare workers and patients. There is no generally accepted guidance on how to reduce contamination on mobile devices in healthcare settings. Our aim was to determine the efficacy of the Codonics D6000™ UV-C disinfection device. Daily disinfection reduced contamination on screens and on protective cases (test) significantly, but not all cases (control) could be decontaminated. The median aerobic colony count on the control and the test cases was 52 cfu/25 cm2 (interquartile range: 33-89) and 22 cfu/25 cm2 (10.5-41), respectively, before disinfection.

PURPOSE: To determine the feasibility of a tablet-based application to detect changes in retinal sensitivity and correlations with underlying pathology in neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) eyes undergoing treatment and in at-risk fellow eyes. METHOD: Participants with nAMD in at least one eye were recruited, examined, and imaged using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Retinal sensitivity was measured within the central 5° at 12 locations using a customized test delivered on an iPad. Test points were superimposed on SD-OCT locations to investigate structure/function relationships. RESULTS: Included in the study were 53 nAMD eyes and 21 at-risk fellow eyes. In nAMD eyes, the mean retinal sensitivity was 24.1 ± 1.8 dB with reduced retinal sensitivity associated with the presence of atrophy (P < 0.01), retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) disruption (P < 0.01), and absent ellipsoid zone (EZ) (P < 0.01), but not with the presence of subretinal fluid (P = 0.94) nor intraretinal fluid (P = 0.52). In at-risk eyes, the average retinal sensitivity was 28.8 ± 0.6 dB, with reduced sensitivity significantly associated with the presence of drusen, atrophy, RPE disruption, and absent EZ (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The tablet-based test of retinal sensitivity was able to be performed by an elderly cohort with nAMD. The ability to correlate differences in sensitivity with pathology is encouraging when considering using the tablet devices as a home monitoring tool with remote surveillance. Dual pathology often present with retinal fluid confounded our ability to correlate fluid with sensitivity. TRANSLATIONAL RELEVANCE: These findings highlight the potential of tablet-based devices in performing visual function measures as a home monitoring tool with remote surveillance for the earlier detection of nAMD.

Although stigma is considered to be one of the major barriers to reducing the AIDS epidemic in India, efforts to reduce stigma have not been sufficiently examined. In response, a partially computer-administered three-session stigma reduction intervention was developed and is currently being tested. This paper describes the technological design, development, implementation, and management of these in-person tablet-administered assessment and intervention sessions that are being used to evaluate the efficacy of this innovative stigma reduction intervention among nursing students and ward attendants in India.

A new tablet device version (IOS platform) of the Spatial Delayed Recognition Span Task (SDRST) was developed with the aim of investigating visuospatial Working Memory (WM) abilities based on touchscreen technology. This new WM testing application will be available to download for free in Apple Store app ("SDRST app"). In order to verify the feasibility of this computer-based task, we conducted three experiments with different manipulations and groups of participants. We were interested in investigating if (1) the SDRST is sensitive enough to tap into cognitive differences brought by aging and dementia; (2) different experimental manipulations work successfully; (3) cortical brain activations seen in other WM tasks are also demonstrated here; and (4) non-human primates are able to answer the task. Performance (scores and response time) was better for young than older adults and higher for the latter when compared to Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. All groups performed better with facial stimuli than with images of scenes and with emotional than with neutral stimuli. Electrophysiology data showed activation on prefrontal and frontal areas of scalp, theta band activity on the midline area, and gamma activity in left temporal area. There are all scalp regions known to be related to attention and WM. Besides those data, our sample of adult captive capuchin monkeys (Sapajus libidinosus) answered the task above chance level. Taken together, these results corroborate the reliability of this new computer-based SDRST as a measure of visuospatial WM in clinical and non-clinical populations as well as in non-human primates. Its tablet app allows the task to be administered in a wide range of settings, including hospitals, homes, schools, laboratories, universities, and research institutions.

PURPOSE: To investigate the feasibility of using tablet device as user interface for students with upper extremity disabilities to input mathematics efficiently into computer. METHODS: A touch-input system using tablet device as user interface was proposed to assist these students to write mathematics. User-switchable and context-specific keyboard layouts were designed to streamline the input process. The system could be integrated with conventional computer systems only with minor software setup. A two-week pre-post test study involving five participants was conducted to evaluate the performance of the system and collect user feedback. RESULTS: The mathematics input efficiency of the participants was found to improve during the experiment sessions. In particular, their performance in entering trigonometric expressions by using the touch-input system was significantly better than that by using conventional mathematics editing software with keyboard and mouse. The participants rated the touch-input system positively and were confident that they could operate at ease with more practice. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed touch-input system provides a convenient way for the students with hand impairment to write mathematics and has the potential to facilitate their mathematics learning. Implications for Rehabilitation Students with upper extremity disabilities often face barriers to learning mathematics which is largely based on handwriting. Conventional computer user interfaces are inefficient for them to input mathematics into computer. A touch-input system with context-specific and user-switchable keyboard layouts was designed to improve the efficiency of mathematics input. Experimental results and user feedback suggested that the system has the potential to facilitate mathematics learning for the students.
