BACKGROUND: Many young people (YP) struggle with their mental health and look online for help. To capitalise on their digital presence, we need to better understand how and where they seek information online and what they think of what they find. METHOD: We recruited 24 YP (aged 13-18 years). Online interviews were co-conducted by research team members and trained young researchers. We presented a persona with depression symptoms and asked about potential sources of information/support they might seek. They were also asked to think aloud while searching online and reviewing mental health resources (NHS, Young Minds). We used reflexive thematic analysis. RESULTS: Analysis generated four themes: (1) the online help-seeking process, showcasing where YP look for information and why; (2) the mismatch between the information YP expected to find and the reality; (3) the strategies YP employed to determine a source's trust and credibility and (4) individual differences that can influence help-seeking. CONCLUSION: Participants initiated their online search by Googling symptoms. They trusted NHS websites for basic medical information, while charities provided detailed content. Despite scepticism about content, social media offered validation. Online resources should prioritise visual appeal, user-friendliness, age-appropriate and personalised content and peer insights. Codesign is imperative to ensure high-quality, impactful research.

Background: Digital health interventions (DHIs) could support prevention and management of cardiometabolic disease. However, those who may benefit most often experience barriers to awareness and adoption of these interventions. Objective: Among South Asian individuals, we evaluated user experience of DHIs for prevention and management of cardiometabolic disease, aiming to understand barriers and facilitators to initial and ongoing use. Methods: Among South Asian individuals recruited via primary care, community organizations, and snowball methods (n=18), we conducted "think-aloud" interviews using a reflective and reactive approach. Participants included nonusers, as well as those that used a range of DHIs as part of monitoring and improving their health. Participants were asked to think aloud while completing a task they routinely do in a familiar DHI, as well as while setting up and completing a search task in a novel DHI; they were encouraged to behave as if unobserved. Results: Lack of cultural specificity was highlighted as reducing relevance and usability, particularly relating to dietary change. Preferred features reflected individual health beliefs and behaviors, digital skills, and trust in DHIs. For example, tracking blood glucose was considered by some to be positive, while for others it caused distress and anxiety. Similarly, some users found the novel DHI to be extremely simple to set up and use, and others grew frustrated navigating through initial interfaces. Many participants raised concerns about data privacy and needing to agree to terms and conditions that they did not understand. Participants expressed that with information and support from trusted sources, they would be interested in using DHIs as part of self-management. Conclusions: DHIs may support South Asians to prevent and manage cardiometabolic disease, but it is important to consider the needs of specific user groups in DHI development, design, and implementation. Despite motivation to make health changes, digital barriers are common. Cultural appropriateness and trusted sources (such as health care providers and community organizations) have roles in increasing awareness and enabling individuals to access and use DHIs.

BACKGROUND: With the widespread adoption of digital health records, including electronic discharge summaries (eDS), it is important to assess their usability in order to understand whether they meet the needs of the end users. While there are established approaches for evaluating the usability of electronic health records, there is a lack of knowledge regarding suitable evaluation methods specifically for eDS. OBJECTIVE: This literature review aims to identify the usability evaluation approaches used in eDS. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive search of PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, ACM Digital Library, MEDLINE, and ProQuest databases from their inception until July 2023. The study information was extracted and reported in accordance with the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses). We included studies that assessed the usability of eDS, and the systems used to display eDS. RESULTS: A total of 12 records, including 11 studies and 1 thesis, met the inclusion criteria. The included studies used qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods approaches and reported the use of various usability evaluation methods. Heuristic evaluation was the most used method to assess the usability of eDS systems (n=7), followed by the think-aloud approach (n=5) and laboratory testing (n=3). These methods were used either individually or in combination with usability questionnaires (n=3) and qualitative semistructured interviews (n=4) for evaluating eDS usability issues. The evaluation processes incorporated usability metrics such as user performance, satisfaction, efficiency, and impact rating. CONCLUSIONS: There are a limited number of studies focusing on usability evaluations of eDS. The identified studies used expert-based and user-centered approaches, which can be used either individually or in combination to identify usability issues. However, further research is needed to determine the most appropriate evaluation method which can assess the fitness for purpose of discharge summaries.

BACKGROUND: Engagement with and the potential impact of web-based interventions is often studied by tracking user behavior with web analytics. These metrics do provide insights into how users behave, but not why they behave as such. OBJECTIVE: This paper demonstrates how a mixed methods approach consisting of (1) a theoretical analysis of intended use, (2) a subsequent analysis of actual use, and (3) an exploration of user perceptions can provide insights into engagement with and potential impact of web-based interventions. This paper focuses on the exploration of user perceptions, using the chlamydia page of the Dutch sexual health intervention, Sense.info, as a demonstration case. This prevention-focused platform serves as the main source of sexual and reproductive health information (and care if needed) for young people aged 12-25 years in the Netherlands. METHODS: First, acyclic behavior change diagrams were used to theoretically analyze the intended use of the chlamydia page. Acyclic behavior change diagrams display how behavior change principles are applied in an intervention and which subbehaviors and target behaviors are (aimed to be) influenced. This analysis indicated that one of the main aims of the page is to motivate sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing. Second, the actual use of the chlamydia page was analyzed with the web analytics tool Matomo. Despite the page's aim of promoting STI testing, a relatively small percentage (n=4948, 14%) of the 35,347 transfers from this page were to the STI testing page. Based on these two phases, preliminary assumptions about use and impact were formulated. Third, to further explore these assumptions, a study combining the think-aloud method and semistructured interviews was executed with 15 young individuals aged 16-25 (mean 20, SD 2.5) years. Template analysis was used to analyze interview transcripts. RESULTS: Participants found the information on the Sense.info chlamydia page reliable and would visit it mostly for self-diagnosis purposes if they experienced potential STI symptoms. A perceived facilitator for STI testing was the possibility to learn about the symptoms and consequences of chlamydia through the page. Barriers included an easily overlooked link to the STI testing page and the use of language not meeting the needs of participants. Participants offered suggestions for lowering the threshold for STI testing. CONCLUSIONS: The mixed methods approach used provided detailed insights into the engagement with and potential impact of the Sense.info chlamydia page, as well as strategies to further engage end users and increase the potential impact of the page. We conclude that this approach, which triangulates findings from theoretical analysis with web analytics and a think-aloud study combined with semistructured interviews, may also have potential for the evaluation of web-based interventions in general.

AIM: To conduct unfolding case studies and test their effectiveness in improving clinical reasoning, teamwork and self-directed learning among postgraduate students. BACKGROUND: Postgraduate students, as advanced nursing professionals in clinical settings, are the driving force behind the rapid development of the nursing profession. Effective clinical reasoning is a fundamental nursing skill that postgraduate students must cultivate, having a direct impact on patient health outcomes. The development and usation of unfolding case studies, which reflect the evolving conditions of patients, combined with think-aloud teaching methods, can enhance postgraduate students' clinical reasoning abilities and foster communication and self-reflection, thereby achieving this goal. DESIGN: Mixed methods design. METHODS: The Nurses' Clinical Reasoning Scale and the Nursing Students' Self-Directed Learning Ability Scale were used to evaluate the clinical reasoning and self-directed learning abilities of nursing students. A qualitative exploratory design with a think-aloud interview technique was employed to explore the clinical reasoning process of nursing students in unfolding cases. Twenty-one nursing students completed the questionnaire survey. Data analysis was conducted using Wilcoxon signed-rank tests, Spearman correlations, regressions and inductive content analysis. RESULTS: After implementing the case study, there was a statistically significant improvement in students' clinical reasoning, self-directed learning and teamwork abilities. Think-aloud analysis revealed that the cognitive strategies most employed by students in clinical reasoning were 'Making choices', 'Forming relationships', 'Searched for information' and 'Drawing conclusions'. CONCLUSION: Unfolding case studies combined with think-aloud strategies provide a conducive learning environment for postgraduate students, effectively enhancing their clinical reasoning and self-directed learning abilities.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, only 58% of teens receive the recommended 2 doses of the human papillomavirus vaccine by 15 years of age. Overcoming vaccine hesitancy often requires effective communication between clinicians and parents to address specific concerns. To support this, we developed ProtectMe4, a multilevel, theory-informed web-based intervention designed to address parents' vaccine-related questions and assist clinicians in discussing vaccine concerns for 4 adolescent vaccines. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the usability of ProtectMe4 in routine care settings across 3 pediatric primary care clinics. Specifically, the study aims to (1) observe the proposed workflow in practice, (2) identify usability issues experienced by parents and clinicians, and (3) assess the perceptions of both parents and clinicians regarding the app's usability. METHODS: On designated days in 2020 and 2021, the study team recruited parents of 11- to 12-year-old patients attending appointments with participating clinicians. We conducted think-aloud assessments during routine care visits and administered a usability survey after participants used the app. For parents, we simultaneously video-recorded the app screens and audio-recorded their commentary. For clinicians, observational notes were taken regarding their actions and comments. Timings recorded within the app provided data on the length of use. We reviewed the recordings and notes to compile a list of identified issues and calculated the frequencies of survey responses. RESULTS: Out of 12 parents invited to use the app, 9 (75%) participated. Two parents who were invited outside of the planned workflow, after seeing the clinician, refused to participate. For the parents whose child's vaccination record was identified by the app, the median time spent using the app was 9 (range 6-28) minutes. Think-aloud assessment results for parents were categorized into 2 themes: (1) troubleshooting vaccine record identification and (2) clarifying the app content and purpose. Among the 8 parents who completed the survey, at least 75% (6/8) agreed with each acceptability measure related to user satisfaction, perceived usefulness, and acceptance. These parents' children were patients of 4 of the 7 participating clinicians. Consistent with the planned workflow, clinicians viewed the app before seeing the patient in 4 of 9 (44%) instances. The median time spent on the app per patient was 95 (range 5-240) seconds. Think-aloud assessment results for clinicians were grouped into 2 themes: (1) trust of app vaccine results and (2) clarifying the app content. On the survey, clinicians were unanimously positive about the app, with an average System Usability Scale score of 87.5 (SE 2.5). CONCLUSIONS: This mixed methods evaluation demonstrated that ProtectMe4 was usable and acceptable to both parents and clinicians in real-world pediatric primary care. Improved coordination among clinic staff is needed to ensure the app is consistently offered to patients and reviewed by clinicians before seeing the patient.

OBJECTIVES: The gold standard approach to diagnose periodontitis is based on clinical examination and radiographic investigations. This, however, is expensive, tedious, and not feasible in population-level assessments. The self-reported periodontitis questionnaire offers great benefit to facilitate larger epidemiological surveys. There is limited evidence on cognitive validation of self-reported periodontitis questionnaire. This study employed a think aloud approach to investigate if participants interpreted, comprehended, and understood the items in a self-reported periodontitis questionnaire, in the same way as researchers' intended. METHODS: 20 adults, resident of the UK and fluent in English participated in online recorded think aloud interviews. The self-reported periodontitis questionnaire consists of 15 questions and 2 open ended questions. The interviews were then transcribed and coded by two independent researchers according to predefined categories representing comprehension and conventional content analysis was used to analyse open-ended data. RESULTS: The think aloud approach revealed that most of the questions in the self-reported periodontitis questionnaire were well understood by the participants. Two items, however, were identified as problematic: one was misinterpreted, and another question was not understood by most of the participants. Qualitative conventional content analysis of open-ended questions reiterated and complemented the findings of the think aloud study. Further questions coded as problematic for 3 or more participants were then considered for rephrasing. CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed the interpretation and understanding of self-reported periodontitis questions by English speaking UK residents and highlighted the probable reason for lower sensitivity values of the self-reported periodontitis questionnaire. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This study employed think-aloud approach to capture the thought process of the participants as they answered questions on self-reported periodontitis questionnaire. Overall, the questionnaire was well received by the participants, however, some questions were misunderstood/misinterpreted. This study highlights the potential information bias if participants do not understand the questions in epidemiological surveys.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous thought is a universal, complex, and heterogeneous cognitive activity that significantly impacts mental activity and strongly correlates with mental disorders. METHODS: Utilizing the think-aloud method, we captured spontaneous thoughts during rest from 38 diagnosed with depression, alongside 36 healthy controls and 137 healthy individuals. Through a comprehensive assessment of various dimensions of thought content, we compared thought content between individuals with depression and healthy controls, and between healthy women and men. Finally, we employed natural language processing (NLP) to develop regression models for multidimensional content assessment and a classification model to differentiate between individuals with and without depression. RESULTS: Compared to healthy controls, individuals with depression had more internally oriented and less externally oriented spontaneous thoughts. They focused more on themselves and negative things, and less on positive things, experiencing higher levels of negative emotions and lower levels of positive emotions. Besides, we found that compared to healthy men, healthy women's spontaneous thoughts focus more on interoception, the self, past events, and negative events, and they experience higher levels of negative emotions. Meanwhile, we identified the potential application of the think-aloud method to collect spontaneous thoughts and integrate NLP in the field of depression. CONCLUSIONS: This study offers direct insights into the stream of thought during individuals' resting state, revealing differences between individuals with depression and healthy controls, as well as sex differences in the content of spontaneous thoughts. It enhances our understanding of spontaneous thought and offers a new perspective for preventing, diagnosing, and treating depression.

Despite an established body of research characterizing how creative individuals explore their external world, relatively little is known about how such individuals navigate their inner mental life, especially in unstructured contexts such as periods of awake rest. Across two studies, the present manuscript tested the hypothesis that creative individuals are more engaged with their idle thoughts and more associative in the dynamic transitions between them. Study 1 captured the real-time conscious experiences of 81 adults as they voiced aloud the content of their mind moment-by-moment across a 10-minute unconstrained baseline period. Higher originality scores on a divergent thinking task were associated with less perceived boredom, more words spoken overall, more freely moving thoughts, and more loosely-associative (as opposed to sharp) transitions during the baseline rest period. In Study 2, across 2,612 participants, those who reported higher self-rated creativity also reported less perceived boredom during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time during which many people experienced unusually extended periods of unstructured free time. Overall, these results suggest a tendency for creative individuals to be more engaged and explorative with their thoughts when task demands are relaxed, raising implications for resting state functional MRI and societal trends to devalue idle time.

BACKGROUND: The transition from nursing students to working as new nurses can be a challenging process. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of a pedagogical approach amalgamating the think-aloud approach and case-based learning in the instructional rounds for new nurses. METHODS: Utilizing convenience sampling, new nurses were selected between 2020 and 2021 in China cancer hospital. A total of 98 participants agreed to participate, with 50 enrolled in 2020 as the control group and 48 in 2021 as the observation group. Across a span of weeks 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11, each clinical department conducted six teaching rounds. The observation group engaged in teaching rounds combining the think-aloud approach with case-based learning, whereas the control group solely utilized case-based learning. Disparities in case analysis scores and critical thinking ability between the two groups were scrutinized, alongside an analysis of learning strategies and the observation group feedback. RESULTS: The observation group exhibited superior case analysis scores (91.92 ± 6.33) and overall critical thinking ability scores (308.39 ± 35.88) in comparison to the control group, which scored (85.27 ± 5.39) and (275.11 ± 31.32) respectively, reflecting statistically significant variances (t = 1.868 ~ 6.361, P < 0.05). Predominant learning strategies employed in the observation group ranged from cognitive to meta-cognitive, followed by psychosocial strategies. During interviews focused on nurses' feedback on the learning process, themes emerged surrounding the enhancement of learning proficiency, invigoration of learning enthusiasm, and bolstering psychological well-being. CONCLUSION: The combination of think-aloud approach and case-based learning in nursing teaching rounds greatly improves the efficiency of training and the critical thinking acuity of new nurses. Concurrently, it facilitated an evaluation of learning strategies, thereby offering valuable insights for the nursing teaching rounds of new nurse.

BACKGROUND: Given the dearth of resources to support rural public health practice, the solutions in health analytics for rural equity across the northwest dashboard (SHAREdash) was created to support rural county public health departments in northwestern United States with accessible and relevant data to identify and address health disparities in their jurisdictions. To ensure the development of useful dashboards, assessment of usability should occur at multiple stages throughout the system development life cycle. SHAREdash was refined via user-centered design methods, and upon completion, it is critical to evaluate the usability of SHAREdash. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the usability of SHAREdash based on the system development lifecycle stage 3 evaluation goals of efficiency, satisfaction, and validity. METHODS: Public health professionals from rural health departments from Washington, Idaho, Oregon, and Alaska were enrolled in the usability study from January to April 2022. The web-based evaluation consisted of 2 think-aloud tasks and a semistructured qualitative interview. Think-aloud tasks assessed efficiency and effectiveness, and the interview investigated satisfaction and overall usability. Verbatim transcripts from the tasks and interviews were analyzed using directed content analysis. RESULTS: Of the 9 participants, all were female and most worked at a local health department (7/9, 78%). A mean of 10.1 (SD 1.4) clicks for task 1 (could be completed in 7 clicks) and 11.4 (SD 2.0) clicks for task 2 (could be completed in 9 clicks) were recorded. For both tasks, most participants required no prompting-89% (n=8) participants for task 1 and 67% (n=6) participants for task 2, respectively. For effectiveness, all participants were able to complete each task accurately and comprehensively. Overall, the participants were highly satisfied with the dashboard with everyone remarking on the utility of using it to support their work, particularly to compare their jurisdiction to others. Finally, half of the participants stated that the ability to share the graphs from the dashboard would be "extremely useful" for their work. The only aspect of the dashboard cited as problematic is the amount of missing data that was present, which was a constraint of the data available about rural jurisdictions. CONCLUSIONS: Think-aloud tasks showed that the SHAREdash allows users to complete tasks efficiently. Overall, participants reported being very satisfied with the dashboard and provided multiple ways they planned to use it to support their work. The main usability issue identified was the lack of available data indicating the importance of addressing the ongoing issues of missing and fragmented public health data, particularly for rural communities.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity continues to be a risk for college students in the United States. It is associated with numerous problems, such as chronic health conditions, increased stress and anxiety, and a lower grade point average. After COVID-19, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits were extended to college-aged students; however, there were some barriers to participation, which persisted such as lack of perceived food insecurity risk, lack of knowledge regarding the SNAP application process, the complexity of determining eligibility, and stigma associated with needing social assistance. A technology-enhanced tool was developed to address these barriers to SNAP enrollment and encourage at-risk college students to apply for SNAP. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to test the usability and acceptability of a web-based SNAP screening tool designed for college-aged students. METHODS: College students aged 18-25 years were recruited to participate in 2 rounds of usability testing during fall 2022. Participants tested the prototype of a web-based SNAP screener tool using a standardized think-aloud method. The usability and acceptability of the tool were assessed using a semistructured interview and a 10-item validated System Usability Scale questionnaire. Audio recordings and field notes were systematically reviewed by extracting and sorting feedback as positive or negative comments. System Usability Scale questionnaire data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed rank test and sign test. RESULTS: A total of 12 students (mean age 21.8, SD 2.8 years; n=6, 50% undergraduate; n=11, 92% female; n=7, 58% Hispanic or Black or African American; n=9, 78% low or very low food security) participated in both rounds of user testing. Round 1 testing highlighted overall positive experiences with the tool, with most participants (10/12) stating that the website fulfills its primary objective as a support tool to encourage college students to apply for SNAP. However, issues related to user interface design, navigation, and wording of some questions in the screening tool were noted. Key changes after round 1 reflected these concerns, including improved design of response buttons and tool logo and improved clarity of screening questions. The overall system usability showed slight, but not statistically significant, improvement between round 1 and round 2 (91.25 vs 92.50; P=.10, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Overall usability findings suggest that this web-based tool was highly usable and acceptable to urban college students and could be an effective and appealing approach as a support tool to introduce college students to the SNAP application process. The findings from this study will inform further development of the tool, which could eventually be disseminated publicly among various college campuses.

BACKGROUND: Vascular pathologies of the head and neck are rare but can present as musculoskeletal problems. The International Federation of Orthopedic Manipulative Physical Therapists (IFOMPT) Cervical Framework (Framework) aims to assist evidence-based clinical reasoning for safe assessment and management of the cervical spine considering potential for vascular pathology. Clinical reasoning is critical to physiotherapy, and developing high-level clinical reasoning is a priority for postgraduate (post-licensure) educational programs. OBJECTIVE: To explore the influence of the Framework on clinical reasoning processes in postgraduate physiotherapy students. METHODS: Qualitative case study design using think aloud methodology and interpretive description, informed by COnsolidated criteria for REporting Qualitative research. Participants were postgraduate musculoskeletal physiotherapy students who learned about the Framework through standardized delivery. Two cervical spine cases explored clinical reasoning processes. Coding and analysis of transcripts were guided by Elstein's diagnostic reasoning components and the Postgraduate Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Practice model. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis (inductive and deductive) for individuals and then across participants, enabling analysis of key steps in clinical reasoning processes and use of the Framework. Trustworthiness was enhanced with multiple strategies (e.g., second researcher challenged codes). RESULTS: For all participants (n = 8), the Framework supported clinical reasoning using primarily hypothetico-deductive processes. It informed vascular hypothesis generation in the patient history and testing the vascular hypothesis through patient history questions and selection of physical examination tests, to inform clarity and support for diagnosis and management. Most participant's clinical reasoning processes were characterized by high-level features (e.g., prioritization), however there was a continuum of proficiency. Clinical reasoning processes were informed by deep knowledge of the Framework integrated with a breadth of wider knowledge and supported by a range of personal characteristics (e.g., reflection). CONCLUSIONS: Findings support use of the Framework as an educational resource in postgraduate physiotherapy programs to inform clinical reasoning processes for safe and effective assessment and management of cervical spine presentations considering potential for vascular pathology. Individualized approaches may be required to support students, owing to a continuum of clinical reasoning proficiency. Future research is required to explore use of the Framework to inform clinical reasoning processes in learners at different levels.

Inference plays a key role in reading comprehension. This study examines changes in inferential behavior while reading different genres. The inferential behavior of 28 students with reading disabilities (RDs) and 44 students without RDs was quantified while they read expository and narrative texts. First, the average rates of inference attempts and correct inferences were measured during reading. Then, the same rates were measured separately during early and late reading to see if there was a change in inferential behavior. The results show that the change in inferential behavior depends on the genre. While reading the expository text, both groups showed no significant change in their inference making. In contrast, while reading the narrative text, both groups showed higher rates of inference attempts, and only the students without RD showed a significant increase in correct inferences. The implications of these findings for the design of more engaging and effective reading programs are discussed.

Buruli ulcer (BU) is a skin infection caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans and a neglected tropical disease of the skin (skin NTD). Antibiotic treatments are available but, to be effective in the absence of surgery, BU must be detected at its earliest stages (an innocuous-looking lump under the skin) and adherence to prescribed drugs must be high. This study aimed to develop multisensory medical illustrations of BU to support communication with at-risk communities. We used a Think Aloud method to explore community health workers' (n = 6) experiences of BU with a focus on the role of their five senses, since these non-medical disease experts are familiar with the day-to-day challenges presented by BU. Thematic analysis of the transcripts identified three key themes relating to 'Detection,' 'Help Seeking,' and 'Adherence' with a transcending theme 'Senses as key facilitators of health care'. New medical illustrations, for which we coin the phrase "5D illustrations" (signifying the contribution of the five senses) were then developed to reflect these themes. The senses therefore facilitated an enriched narrative enabling the production of relevant and useful visuals for health communication. The medical artist community could utilise sensory experiences to create dynamic medical illustrations for use in practice.

Introduction: Early recognition of pain in children is crucial, and their self-report is the primary source of information. However, communication about pain in healthcare settings can be challenging. For non-verbal communication regarding different symptoms, children prefer digital tools. The electronic Faces Thermometer Scale (eFTS) utilizes a universal design with colors, face emojis, and numbers on an 11-point scale (0-10) for pain assessment. The aim of this study was to establish content validity of the eFTS for pain assessments in children. Methods: A mixed methods design was used. The study took place at a university hospital in eastern Sweden, involving 102 children aged 8-17 years who visited outpatient clinics. Participants were presented with 17 pictures representing varying pain levels and asked to assess hypothetical pain using the eFTS. A think-aloud approach was employed, prompting children to verbalize their thoughts about assessments and the eFTS. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive and comparative statistics, together with a qualitative approach for analysis of think-aloud conversations. Results: A total of 1,734 assessments of hypothetical pain using the eFTS were conducted. The eFTS differentiated between no pain (level 0-1) and pain (level 2-10). However, no clear agreement was found in the differentiation between hypothetical pain intensity levels (level 2-10). The analysis revealed that children utilized the entire scale, ranging from no pain to high pain, incorporating numbers, colors, and face emojis in their assessments. Discussion: The variability in assessments was influenced by prior experiences, which had an impact on the statistical outcome in our study. However, employing the think-aloud method enhances our understanding of how children utilize the scale and perceive its design, including the incorporation of emotion-laden anchors. Children express a preference for using the eFTS to assess their pain during hospital visits.

The study of complex process models often encounters challenges in terms of comprehensibility. This paper explores using modularization as a strategy to mitigate such challenges, notably the reduction in complexity. Previous research has delved into the comprehensibility of modularized process models, yet an unresolved question about the cognitive factors at play during their comprehension still needs to be answered. Addressing the latter, the paper presents findings from an innovative study combining eye-tracking and concurrent think-aloud techniques involving 25 participants. The study aimed to comprehend how individuals comprehend process models when presented in three different modular formats: flattened process models, models with grouped elements, and models with subprocesses. The results shed light on varying comprehension strategies employed by participants when navigating through these modularized process models. The paper concludes by suggesting avenues for future research guided by these insights.

BACKGROUND: A "Menstruatie Educatie Kalender" application (Menstruation Education Calendar, (MEK-APP)) was developed for adults to evaluate menstrual complaints. The future aim of this app is to use it as a self-diagnostic instrument for menstrual abnormalities for both adults and adolescents. Early identification of the potential of an application for future use by both user groups would increase implementation success and adoption of the application. OBJECTIVE: To compare differences in experienced usability by adults versus adolescents and to identify factors influencing future use for both age groups in one mHealth application (in this study the MEK-APP). METHODS: This study consisted of three phases: (1) usability testing of the MEK-APP for iOS and Android by think-aloud method, (2) two-month daily use and (3) in-depth individual interview. During the think-aloud sessions, twelve tasks were performed in the application while they were thinking aloud. Usability problems were rated for their severity with Nielsen' Severity Scale. Both the think-aloud sessions and in-depth interviews were verbatim transcribed and thematically analyzed to determine the factors influencing future use for both groups. In addition, the System Usability Scale (SUS) and Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI) questionnaires were filled out during the interviews. RESULTS: Seven adults (>18 years) and seven adolescents (14-18 years) evaluated the MEK-APP. There were 14 usability issues and 16 bugs in both groups. There were no differences between adults and adolescents. In the thematic qualitative analysis, the following future use factors were identified: user-expectation, motivation, privacy, understandability, and user-experience. The user-expectation, motivation and privacy differed between both groups but did not influence usage. No differences were observed in SUS and IMI scores between both groups. CONCLUSIONS: There are five factors influencing the future use of a menstrual-related mHealth application for both adults and adolescents. It is possible to serve different age groups with a single application.

BACKGROUND: The eCOVID19 Recommendations Map & Gateway to Contextualization (RecMap) website was developed to identify all COVID-19 guidelines, assess the credibility and trustworthiness of the guidelines, and make recommendations understandable to various stakeholder groups. To date, little has been done to understand and explore parents' experiences when accessing and using the RecMap website for COVID-19 health decision-making. OBJECTIVE: To explore (1) where parents look for COVID-19 health information and why, (2) parents' user experience when accessing and using the RecMap website to make health decisions, and (3) what knowledge mobilization activities are needed to increase parents' awareness, use, and engagement with the RecMap website. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative descriptive study using semistructured interviews and a think-aloud activity with parents of children aged 18 years or younger living in Canada. Participants were asked to provide feedback on the RecMap website and to "think aloud" as they navigated the website to find relevant COVID-19 health recommendations. Demographic information was collected using a web-based questionnaire. A hybrid deductive and inductive thematic approach guided analysis and data synthesis. RESULTS: A total of 21 participants (13/21, 62% mothers) were interviewed and participated in a think-aloud activity. The data were categorized into four sections, representative of key elements that deductively and inductively emerged from the data: (1) parent information seeking behaviors and preferences for COVID-19, (2) RecMap website usability, (3) perceived usefulness of the RecMap website, and (4) knowledge mobilization strategies to increase awareness, use, and engagement of the RecMap website. Parents primarily used the internet to find COVID-19 information and focused on sources that they determined to be credible, trustworthy, simple, and engaging. As the pandemic evolved, participants' information-seeking behaviors changed, specifically their topics of interest and search frequency. Most parents were not aware of the RecMap website before this study but found satisfaction with its concept and layout and expressed intentions to use and share it with others. Parents experienced some barriers to using the RecMap website and suggested key areas for improvement to facilitate its usability and perceived usefulness. Recommendations included a more user-friendly home page for lay audiences (separate public-facing user interface), improving the search and filter options, quicker navigation, clearer titles, more family-friendly graphics, and improving mobile-friendly access. Several strategies to disseminate the RecMap website were also expressed, including a mix of traditional and nontraditional methods (handouts and social media) in credible and high-traffic locations that parents frequent often. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, parents liked the concept of the RecMap website but had some suggestions to improve its usability (language, navigation, and website interface). These findings can be used to improve the RecMap website for parents and offer insight for the development and dissemination of effective web-based health information tools and resources for the general public.
