RESUMO

Menopause-associated mood disorder is characterized by emotional depression, anxiety, and stress, which accompany hypogonadism in women in the menopausal phase. The current treatment for menopause-associated mood disorder provides only symptomatic relief and is associated with many side effects. Supplementation with vitamin E has been shown to be effective in ameliorating anxiety and depression. However, the effects of vitamin E and its underlying mechanism in ameliorating menopause-associated mood disorders remain uncertain. This work evaluated the effects of α-tocopherol and tocotrienol-rich palm oil extract on depressive and anxiety-related phenotypes induced by estrogen deficiency through ovariectomy in mice. Our study revealed that ovariectomized mice exhibited alterations in behavior indicative of depressive- and anxiety-like behaviors. The serum corticosterone level, a glucocorticoid hormone associated with stress, was found to be elevated in ovariectomized mice as compared to the sham group. Oral administration of α-tocopherol (50 and 100 mg/kg) and tocotrienol-rich palm oil extract (100 and 200 mg/kg) for 14 days alleviated these behavioral changes, as observed in open field, social interaction, and tail suspension tests. However, treatment with tocotrienol-rich palm oil extract, but not α-tocopherol, modulated the depressive- and anxiety-like responses in ovariectomized mice subjected to chronic restraint stress. Both treatments suppressed the elevated serum corticosterone level. Our findings suggested that α-tocopherol and tocotrienol-rich palm oil extract alleviated menopause-associated mood disorder, at least in part, by modulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. The findings of this study can provide a new foundation for the treatment of menopause-associated depressive- and anxiety-like phenotypes, for the betterment of psychological wellbeing.

This study explored the mechanism of interaction of pH-shifting combined ultrasonication and its effect on soybean lipophilic proteins (SLP) and the potential of modified SLP as the carrier for vitamin E (VE) and quercetin (QU). The spectroscopy results revealed that both VE and QU changed the SLP conformation and exposed hydrophobic groups. The loading rates of VE and QU by SLP with alkaline pH-shifting combined with ultrasonication (300 w,20 min) were 86.91% and 75.99%, respectively. According to the antioxidant analysis, with an increase in the ultrasonication power, the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging capacity of the samples increased, where the DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging capacity of sample SQV-6 were 70.90% and 63.43%, respectively. The physicochemical properties, microstructure, and stability of the SLP-VE-QU complex improved significantly. Overall, the present findings broadened the application of simple structural carriers for co-encapsulating functional factors.

BACKGROUND: We investigated the individual and interaction effects of maternal plasma 𝛂- and ϒ-tocopherol levels (vitamin E isomers) on child asthma and wheeze at age 8-9. METHODS: Mother-child dyads were enrolled between 2006 and 2011 into the Conditions Affecting Neurocognitive Development and Learning in Early Childhood (CANDLE) prenatal cohort. Maternal second-trimester samples were analyzed for tocopherol and lipid concentrations. We assessed child asthma/wheeze using the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) and other self-reported Ent wheeze. In multivariable logistic regression analyses, we assessed associations between vitamin E isomers and child asthma/wheeze outcomes (n = 847 mother-child dyads) and tested for prespecified interaction terms. RESULTS: Median cholesterol-corrected tocopherol levels (interquartile range (IQR)) were 5.0 (4.3-5.7) and 0.8 (0.7-0.9) (umol/mmol) for 𝛂- and ϒ-tocopherol, respectively. Associations between 𝛂-tocopherol and asthma outcome variables were inverse but not statistically significant. In contrast, for ϒ-tocopherol, associations were in the positive direction, but also nonsignificant. Interactions analysis between tocopherols did not reach statistical significance for any outcome. Among children of women with a history of asthma, the likelihood of ever asthma in the child appears to be decreasing with increasing maternal 𝛂-tocopherol levels, whereas this trend was not observed among those without a history of asthma (p-interaction = .05). CONCLUSION: We observed no associations for prenatal 𝛂- or ϒ-tocopherol concentrations with child asthma/wheeze. We detected some evidence of effect modification by maternal asthma history in associations between 𝛂-tocopherol and child asthma.

The present study involved the synthesis and analysis of a lipophilic form of vitamin C, namely tetrabutyryl vitamin C ester (TVCE). TVCE is synthesized by a simple one-step method, combining the advantages of VC and butyric acid. Its antioxidant efficacy on sunflower seed oil frying was evaluated by assessing lipid oxidation parameters including peroxide number (POV), carbonyl number (CV), and paraniline number (pAV). Furthermore, changes in the fatty acid composition of the oil were monitored using techniques such as infrared spectroscopy (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and gas chromatography (GC). The findings demonstrated that lipophilic vitamin C exhibited superior protection against oxidation during frying compared to vitamin E, suggesting that it may be an effective fat-soluble antioxidant. The study provides a new field for the utilization of vitamin C and a new idea for the development of efficient antioxidants.

The term natural oil refers to a fixed (non-volatile) oil of animal or plant origin. These types of oils - in contrast to essential (volatile) oils, which are obtained by steam distillation methods of plant matter - are typically obtained from plant seeds and nuts by a mechanical pressing technique or solvent extraction. The natural movement in cosmetics of the 21st century has led to renewed interest in formulating skin care products with botanical ingredients. In this article, we discuss the benefits and caveats of natural oil treatments as moisturizing agents (as occlusives and emollients) as well as their utility in wound healing and treatment of skin diseases. We also address the paradoxical behaviour of natural oils in relation to barrier function and highlight the current state of our knowledge with respect to the use of natural oils in neonatal skin care. Finally, we provide a comparison of natural oils to conventional petroleum-based oils.


Le terme huile naturelle fait référence à une huile fixe (non volatile) d'origine animale ou végétale. Ces types d'huiles, contrairement aux huiles essentielles (volatiles) qui sont obtenues par des méthodes de distillation à la vapeur de matières végétales, sont généralement obtenues à partir de graines et de noix de plantes par une technique de pressage mécanique ou d'extraction par solvant. Le mouvement naturel des cosmétiques du XXI siècle a suscité un regain d'intérêt pour la formulation de produits de soins pour la peau à base d'ingrédients botaniques. Dans cet article, nous examinons les avantages et les mises en garde des traitements à base d'huiles naturelles en tant qu'agents hydratants (comme occlusifs et émollients), ainsi que leur utilité dans la cicatrisation des plaies et le traitement des maladies de la peau. Nous abordons également le comportement paradoxal des huiles naturelles par rapport à la fonction barrière et mettons en évidence l'état actuel de nos connaissances en ce qui concerne l'utilisation des huiles naturelles dans les soins de la peau néonatale. Enfin, nous comparons les huiles naturelles aux huiles conventionnelles à base de pétrole.

This research examines the total polyphenol and flavonoid content and antioxidant activity of natural ingredients such as balloon flower root extract (BFE), Japanese apricot extract (JAE) and grape extract (GE). In addition, their effect on beef jerky quality characteristics was investigated when the extracts were used as alternatives to potassium sorbate (PS) and vitamin E (VE). BFE had higher (p < 0.05) total flavonoid content (TFC) (6.85 mg CAT eq/g), total polyphenol content (TPC) (10.52 mg RUT eq/g), 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical (62.96%), and 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging activity (87.60%) compared to other extracts. Although all extracts showed lower activity than BHT in all antioxidant activity tests, the BFE and JAE showed higher (p < 0.05) activity than the GE in the DPPH and FRAP assays. In contrast, in the ABTS assay, both BFE and GE showed increased activity (p < 0.05) compared to JAE. The jerky was prepared by adding 0.05% (v/v) each of BFE, JAE and GE. Furthermore, a control sample of jerky was also prepared by adding 0.10% (w/v) PS and 0.05% VE, respectively. On day 30, the redness (a*) values of the BFE and PS samples were also found to be significantly higher than those of the other samples (p < 0.05). Additionally, the yellowness (b*) values of the BFE sample were also found to be significantly higher than those of the other samples (p < 0.05). The thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARSs) on day 30 were lower in the jerky treated with PS, VE, and GE compared to those treated with BFE and JAE (p < 0.05). In the sensory analysis, beef jerky with BFE had significantly higher overall acceptability scores on days 1 and 30 (p < 0.05). The addition of BFE to beef jerky influenced the increase in a* and b* values on day 30. The addition of GE effectively suppressed lipid oxidation to a level comparable to that of the PS and VE at day 30. Furthermore, the addition of BFE enhanced the overall acceptability of sensory characteristics.

BACKGROUND: The notable decline in the number of Tregs within Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) intestinal tissues,contribute to excessive inflammation and necrosis, yet the precise underlying factors remain enigmatic. Ferroptosis, a novel cell death stemming from a disrupted lipid redox metabolism, is the focus of this investigation. Specifically, this study delves into the ferroptosis of Treg cells in the context of NEC and observes the protective effects exerted by vitamin E intervention, which aims to mitigate ferroptosis of Treg cells. METHODS: To investigate the reduction of Treg cells in NEC intestine, we analyzed its association with ferroptosis from multiple angles. We constructed a mouse with a specific knockout of Gpx4 in Treg cells, aiming to examine the impact of Treg cell ferroptosis on NEC intestinal injury and localized inflammation. Ultimately, we employed vitamin E treatment to mitigate ferroptosis in NEC intestine's Treg cells, monitoring the subsequent amelioration in intestinal inflammatory damage. RESULTS: The diminution of Treg cells in NEC is attributed to ferroptosis stemming from diminished GPX4 expression. Gpx4-deficient Treg cells exhibit impaired immunosuppressive function and are susceptible to ferroptosis. This ferroptosis of Treg cells exacerbates intestinal damage and inflammatory response in NEC. Notably, Vitamin E can inhibit the ferroptosis of Treg cells, subsequently alleviating intestinal damage and inflammation in NEC. Additionally, Vitamin E bolsters the anti-lipid peroxidation capability of Treg cells by upregulating the expression of GPX4. CONCLUSION: In the context of NEC, the ferroptosis of Treg cells represents a significant factor contributing to intestinal tissue damage and an exaggerated inflammatory response. GPX4 is pivotal for the viability and functionality of Treg cells. Vitamin E exhibits the capability to mitigate the ferroptosis of Treg cells, thereby enhancing their number and function, which plays a crucial role in mitigating intestinal tissue damage and inflammatory response in NEC.

This study aimed to investigate the potential of polycaprolactone-vitamin E TPGS (PCL-TPGS) micelles as a delivery system for oral administration of paclitaxel (PTX). The PCL-TPGS copolymer was synthesized using ring opening polymerization, and PTX-loaded PCL-TPGS micelles (PTX micelles) were prepared via a co-solvent evaporation method. Characterization of these micelles included measurements of size, polydispersity, and encapsulation efficiency. The cellular uptake of PTX micelles was evaluated in Caco-2 cells using rhodamine 123 (Rh123) as a fluorescent probe. Moreover, an everted rat sac study was conducted to evaluate the ex vivo permeability of PTX micelles. Additionally, a comparative pharmacokinetic study of PTX micelles versus the marketed formulation, Ebetaxel® (a Taxol generic), was performed after a single oral administration to rats. The results demonstrated that the micellar formulation significantly improved PTX solubility (nearly 1 mg/mL). The in vitro stability and release of PTX micelles in simulated gastric fluid (SGF) and simulated intestinal fluid (SIF) demonstrated that PTX micelles remained stable for up to 24 h and significantly slowed the release of PTX in both media compared to Ebetaxel®. The in vitro cellular uptake, ex vivo intestinal permeability, and in vivo pharmacokinetic profile demonstrated that PTX micelles enhanced the permeability and facilitated a rapid absorption of the drug. Conclusively, the PCL7000-TPGS3500 micelles exhibit potential as an effective oral delivery system for PTX.

This research aimed to study the long-term effects of soccer training on platelet membrane fatty acid levels and antioxidant vitamins. Forty-four subjects divided into soccer players (SP; n = 22; 20.86 ± 0.36 years) and a control group (CG; n = 22; 21.23 ± 0.49 years) participated in the study. The fatty acids of the platelet membrane, the rates of desaturation, lipid peroxidation indexes and intra-platelet levels of vitamins C and E were assessed. SP obtained lower values in polyunsaturated fatty acids 18:3:3 (alpha-linolenic acid), 20:5:3 (eicosapentaenoic acid) and 22:6:3 (docosahexaenoic acid) (p < 0.05). The desaturation index ∆5 was higher in SP (p < 0.05), and they had a higher lipid peroxidation index 20:4:6 (arachidonic acid)/16:0 (palmitic acid) (p < 0.05). Vitamin E and C platelet values were also higher in SP (p < 0.01). There were positive correlations in the ω6/ω3 index (p < 0.05), desaturation index ∆5 (p < 0.05), lipid peroxidation index 20:4:6/16:0 and intra-platelet vitamins E and C (p < 0.01) with the level of physical activity. In addition, there were inverse correlations in fatty acids 24:0 (lignoceric acid), 16:1 (palmitoleic acid), 20:3:6 (eicosadienoic acid) and 18:3:3 (alpha-linolenic acid) (p < 0.05) depending on the degree of physical activity. Regular long-term soccer training could modify the concentration of fatty acids such as 24:0, 16:1, 18:6, 20:3:6, 18:3:3:3, 20:5:3, 26:6:3 and ω3 PUFAs in the platelet membrane.

In humans, α-tocopherol (α-TOC) is mainly stored in adipose tissue, where it participates in preventing damages induced by inflammation and reactive oxygen species. Factors, including genetic ones, that explain adipose tissue α-TOC concentration remain poorly understood. This study, therefore, aimed to characterize the interindividual variability of adipose tissue α-TOC concentration in healthy individuals and to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with it. The study used a randomized cross-over design with 42 healthy adult males. α-TOC concentration was measured in fasting plasma and periumbilical adipose tissue samples, both at fast and 8 h after consumption of three standard meals. Partial least squares (PLS) regression was performed to identify SNPs associated with the interindividual variability of adipose tissue α-TOC concentration. Adipose tissue α-TOC concentration was not associated with fasting plasma concentration (Pearson's r = 0.24, 95% CI: [-0.08, 0.51]). There was a high interindividual variability of adipose tissue α-TOC concentration (CV = 61%). A PLS regression model comprising 10 SNPs in five genes (PPARG, ABCA1, BUD13, CD36, and MGLL) explained 60% (adjusted R2) of the variability of this concentration. The interindividual variability of adipose tissue α-TOC concentration in humans is due, at least partly, to SNPs in genes involved in α-TOC and triglyceride metabolism.

In the pathological process of Alzheimer's disease, neuronal cell death is closely related to the accumulation of reactive oxygen species. Our previous studies have found that oxidative stress can activate microtubule affinity-regulating kinases, resulting in elevated phosphorylation levels of tau protein specifically at the Ser262 residue in N1E-115 cells that have been subjected to exposure to hydrogen peroxide. This process may be one of the pathogenic mechanisms of Alzheimer's disease. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble, naturally occurring antioxidant that plays a crucial role in biological systems. This study aimed to examine the probable processes that contribute to the inhibiting effect on the abnormal phosphorylation of tau protein and the neuroprotective activity of a particular type of vitamin E, α-tocotrienol. The experimental analysis revealed that α-tocotrienol showed significant neuroprotective effects in the N1E-115 cell line. Our data further suggest that one of the mechanisms underlying the neuroprotective effects of α-tocotrienol may be through the inhibition of microtubule affinity-regulated kinase activation, which significantly reduces the oxidative stress-induced aberrant elevation of p-Tau (Ser262) levels. These results indicate that α-tocotrienol may represent an intriguing strategy for treating or preventing Alzheimer's disease.

Antioxidants play a pivotal role in maintaining skin health and integrity, combating the deleterious effects of oxidative stress induced by environmental aggressors such as UV ra-diation, pollution, and lifestyle factors. This paper reviews the contributions of key antioxidants, including Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin A, green tea extract, Coenzyme Q10, Resveratrol, Selenium, and Polyphenols, in skin health care. Vitamin C, known for its collagen synthesis promotion and photoprotection properties, alongside Vitamin E, a lipid-soluble antioxidant, syn-ergistically works to neutralize free radicals and repair damaged skin cells. Vitamin A, in the form of retinol, plays a critical role in skin cell regeneration and the maintenance of skin integ-rity. Green tea extract, rich in Polyphenols, offers anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogenic prop-erties, making it a potent ingredient for skin protection. Coenzyme Q10, a naturally occurring antioxidant in the body, aids in energy production for cell repair and regeneration, while Resveratrol, found in grapes and berries, provides anti-ageing benefits by enhancing skin's re-sistance to oxidative stress. Selenium, an essential mineral, contributes to the protection of skin cells from oxidative damage. The incorporation of these antioxidants in skincare products and dietary sources is discussed, highlighting the importance of a holistic approach in skincare re-gimes. The paper emphasizes the synergy between topical applications and dietary intake of antioxidants, advocating for a comprehensive strategy for promoting skin health and preventing age-related skin alterations. Method: For the review article, a variety of search engines and databases were used to identify relevant articles. Furthermore, for biomedical literature focusing on antioxidants and their ef-fects on skin health, PubMed was used. Moreover, to access a wide range of scholarly articles, including those related to dermatology and skincare, Google Scholar was used. Scopus provides comprehensive coverage of peer-reviewed literature across various scientific disciplines. Web of Science identifies high-impact articles and research on antioxidants in skincare. In addition, for accessing full-text articles on antioxidants and their applications in dermatology, Science Direct was used. The inclusion criteria for the review paper were as follows: only studies pub-lished in peer-reviewed journals were included to ensure the credibility and reliability of the information. Articles published in English were considered, to avoid language-related biases and ensure comprehension. Studies published within the last 10 years were included to provide the most current insights into antioxidant research in skincare. Articles must specifically focus on the role of antioxidants (Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin A, green tea extract, Coenzyme Q10, Resveratrol, Selenium, Polyphenols) in skin health care. Both experimental studies (in vivo and in vitro) and clinical trials were included to provide a comprehensive overview of the antioxidant effects. Full-text articles were included to allow for thorough data extraction and analysis. The exclusion criteria for the review paper were as follows: Publications that were not peer-re-viewed, such as editorials, opinion pieces, and non-scholarly articles, were excluded. Articles published in languages other than English were excluded due to potential translation challenges and to maintain consistency. Studies that did not focus on the specified antioxidants or their impact on skin health were excluded. Duplicate publications were excluded to avoid redundancy in the review. Articles with insufficient or incomplete data were excluded to ensure the quality and reliability of the review findings.

Subfertility is a multifactorial disorder that affects the rabbit production industry. However, subfertility may be treated by using a simple intervention such as vitamin supplementation. Vitamin E and selenium (Se) are potent antioxidants that protect the male reproductive system. The aim of this study is to determine the effects of vitamin E and Se on testicular size, semen quality and freezability, antioxidant activity, testosterone levels, and fertility in subfertile rabbits. Twenty-one New Zealand rabbits were classified as subfertile rabbits based on their semen characteristics and fertility records. The rabbits were randomly allocated into 3 equal groups (G1: control; G2: injected with Vit E 100 IU/head + Se 0.1 mg/kg b.w.; G3: injected with Vit E 200 IU/head + Se 0.2 mg/kg b.w. once weekly for 8 weeks).Once weekly for 8 W, blood samples were collected to measure serum testosterone level and total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and semen samples were collected by artificial vagina to assess the quality of fresh and frozen semen. At the 8th week of the study, 150 multiparous does were artificially inseminated with fresh semen to assess the fertility of rabbits after treatment; 50 does for each group. At the end of the study, rabbits were slaughtered to assess testicular morphometry. Fresh and post-thaw semen quality parameters were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in G3in comparison with G2and G1, respectively. Also, testosterone level was significantly (p < 0.05) increased at the 2nd week in G3in comparison with other groups. Conception and kindling rates were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in does which were inseminated with semen fromG3. In conclusion, injection of vitamin E and selenium at a higher dose (G3) improved the testicular morphology, quality of fresh and post-thaw semen, and most importantly, the fertility of subfertile rabbits.

Following a request from the European Commission, the EFSA Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens (NDA) was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the revision of the tolerable upper intake level (UL) for vitamin E. As α-tocopherol is recognised as the only essential form of vitamin E, the Panel restricted its evaluation to α-tocopherol. Systematic reviews of the literature were conducted to assess evidence on priority adverse health effects of excess intake of vitamin E, namely risk of impaired coagulation and bleeding, cardiovascular disease and prostate cancer. The effect on blood clotting and associated increased risk of bleeding is considered as the critical effect to establish an UL for vitamin E. No new evidence has been published that could improve the characterisation of a dose-response. The ULs for vitamin E from all dietary sources, which were previously established by the Scientific Committee on Food, are retained for all population groups, i.e. 300 mg/day for adults, including pregnant and lactating women, 100 mg/day for children aged 1-3 years, 120 mg/day for 4-6 years, 160 mg/day for 7-10 years, 220 mg/day for 11-14 years and 260 mg/day for 15-17 years. A UL of 50 mg/day is established for infants aged 4-6 months and a UL of 60 mg/day for infants aged 7-11 months. ULs apply to all stereoisomeric forms of α-tocopherol. ULs do not apply to individuals receiving anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications (e.g. aspirin), to patients on secondary prevention for CVD or to patients with vitamin K malabsorption syndromes. It is unlikely that the ULs for vitamin E are exceeded in European populations, except for regular users of food supplements containing high doses of vitamin E.

Vitamin E is associated with the regulation of lipid metabolism. Our previous study revealed an inverse relationship between birth weight and cord blood vitamin E levels, suggesting a potential link between vitamin E and fetal growth. The aim of this study was to determine the association between vitamin E with fetal growth and lipids. In this investigation, a study involving 146 mother-infant pairs was performed. Cord plasma concentrations of vitamin E and lipids were measured. Our findings showed that cord plasma vitamin E levels were elevated in small for gestational age (SGA) infants, and higher vitamin E levels were associated with an increased risk of SGA (OR = 2.239, 95% CI 1.208, 4.742). Additionally, among lipid levels, higher cord plasma triglyceride (TG) levels were associated with increased risks of SGA (OR = 97.020, 95% CI 5.137, 1832.305), whereas after adjusting for confounding factors, the risk became no longer statistically significant. We also found a positive correlation between cord blood vitamin E concentrations and lipid levels. CONCLUSION:  elevated cord blood vitamin E concentrations may be associated with a higher risk of SGA and are positively correlated with lipid levels, suggesting a potential role for vitamin E in fetal lipid metabolism. WHAT IS KNOWN: • Vitamin E is associated with the regulation of lipid metabolism. • Vitamin E is inversely related to birth weight. WHAT IS NEW: • Elevated cord blood vitamin E concentrations may be associated with a higher risk of SGA and positively correlated with lipid levels.

BACKGROUND: A water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) double emulsion can simultaneously load hydrophilic and hydrophobic substances due to its unique two-membrane, three-phase structure. However, thermodynamic instability greatly limits the application of double emulsions in food processing. Further development of Pickering emulsions based on proteins, etc., can improve the stability and loading capacity. It is of great significance to promote their practical application. RESULTS: Herein, we prepared ultrasound pretreatment complex glycation-modified phycocyanin (UMPC) to stabilize a W/O/W Pickering emulsion for the codelivery of vitamin B12 (VB12) and vitamin E (VE). First, an inner water phase and oil phase containing polyglycerin polyricinoleate were homogenized to prepare a W/O emulsion. Subsequently, the W/O emulsion was homogenized with an outer water phase containing UMPC to obtain a W/O/W Pickering emulsion. A gel-like inner phase emulsion with excellent storage and thermal stabilities was obtained under the condition that the W/O emulsion volume ratio was 80% and the UMPC was stabilized by 10 g kg-1. The double emulsion after loading VB12 and VE showed good encapsulation effect during the storage period, the encapsulation rate could reach more than 90%, it also showed excellent protection effect under long-time storage and UV irradiation and the retention rate increased by more than 65%. In addition, the bioavailability of VB12 and VE significantly increased during simulated gastrointestinal digestion and reached 46.02% and 52.43%, respectively. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that the UMPC-stabilized W/O/W Pickering emulsion is an effective carrier for the codelivery of hydrophilic and hydrophobic bioactive molecules and also provides a means for useful exploration of an efficient and stable emulsion system stabilized by biological macromolecules. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

PURPOSE: The association between vitamin E and the risk of kidney disease is well documented in observational studies, but the role of vitamin E in kidney disease remain inconclusive. Here, we evaluated the causal effect of vitamin E on the risk of multiple kidney diseases, including chronic kidney disease, membranous nephropathy, diabetic nephropathy, IgA nephropathy, and dialysis. METHODS: We conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis from large-scale trans-ancestry genome-wide association studies to determine whether there was a significant causal relationship between vitamin E and multiple kidney diseases in European, American, and Asian ancestry. Instrumental genetic variants associated with vitamin E were selected, and summary statistic-based methods of inverse variance weighted, MR Egger, weighted median, simple mode, and weighted mode methods were conducted. Pleiotropy and sensitivity were assessed. RESULTS: We obtained 87 instrumental genetic variants in European ancestry and found no causal relationship between vitamin E and chronic kidney disease, membranous nephropathy, diabetic nephropathy, IgA nephropathy, and dialysis with no heterogeneity and pleiotropy. We obtained 18 instrumental genetic variants in Asian ancestry and vitamin E had no causal relationship with membranous nephropathy, diabetic nephropathy, and IgA nephropathy with no heterogeneity and pleiotropy. In African ancestry, 25 instrumental genetic variants were obtained and no causal relationship was identified with no heterogeneity and pleiotropy. CONCLUSION: Our study first suggested plausible non-causal associations between vitamin E and multiple kidney diseases among different ancestry.

Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) is a serious condition that may develop in patients undergoing diagnostic radiologic procedures. Several treatments have been assessed to prevent CIN development. This study aims to assess the efficacy and safety of vitamin E in the prevention of CIN compared to intravenous (IV) saline hydration. The literature search included MEDLINE/PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, the Web of Science, ProQuest, and Scopus for articles published until May 11, 2024, without language or time limits. The outcomes included the incidence of CIN, new-onset dialysis, and death (primary), as well as the change in serum creatinine and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) (secondary). Numerical and dichotomous outcomes were presented as standardized mean difference (SMD) and risk ratio (RR), respectively, with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Six clinical trials were included. Vitamin E was administered orally in varying doses, but one study used IV infusion. Vitamin E decreased the risk of developing CIN by 59% (n=5; pooled RR: 0.41; 95% CI: 0.25, 0.65; P<0.001) compared to IV hydration. None of the patients required renal replacement therapy. One patient on vitamin E died due to the occurrence of acute coronary syndrome. Vitamin E is a promising effective prophylaxis against CIN. However, the number of included studies and their sample sizes are small. The studies showed several limitations. There is a need for further high-quality clinical trials to ascertain the effectiveness of vitamin E compared to IV hydration and to compare vitamin E to other therapies, such as N-acetyl cysteine.

SARS-CoV-2 is an obligatory intracellular pathogen that requires a lipid bilayer membrane for its transport to build its nucleocapsid envelope and fuse with the host cell. The biological membranes are constituted by phospholipids (PLs), and vitamin E (Vit E) protects them from oxidative stress (OS). The aim of this study was to demonstrate if treatment with Vit E restores the modified profile of the FA in PLs in serum from patients with coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19). We evaluated Vit E, total fatty acids (TFAs), fatty acids of the phospholipids (FAPLs), total phospholipids (TPLs), 8-isoprostane, thromboxane B2 (TXB2), prostaglandins (PGE2 and 6-keto-PGF1α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and C-reactive protein (CRP) in serum from 22 COVID-19 patients before and after treatment with Vit E and compared the values with those from 23 healthy subjects (HSs). COVID-19 patients showed a decrease in Vit E, TPLs, FAPLs, and TFAs in serum in comparison to HSs (p ≤ 0.01), and Vit E treatment restored their levels (p ≤ 0.04). Likewise, there was an increase in IL-6 and CRP in COVID-19 patients in comparison with HSs (p ≤ 0.001), and treatment with Vit E decreased their levels (p ≤ 0.001). Treatment with Vit E as monotherapy can contribute to restoring the modified FA profile of the PLs in the SARS-CoV-2 infection, and this leads to a decrease in lipid peroxidation, OS, and the inflammatory process.

Using alternative ingredients or low-quality grain grades to reduce feeding costs for pig diets can introduce mycotoxins such as deoxynivalenol (DON) into feed, which is known to induce anorexia, inflammation, and oxidative stress. Adding vitamin 25(OH)D3 or vitamins E and C to the feed could increase piglets' immune system to alleviate the effects of DON. This study used 54 pigs (7.8 ± 0.14 kg) in 27 pens (2 pigs/pen) with a vitamin 25(OH)D3 or vitamin E-C supplementation, or their combination, in DON-contaminated (5.1 mg/kg) feed ingredients over 21 days followed by a lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge (20 µg/kg BW) 3 h prior to euthanasia for 1 piglet per pen. DON contamination induced anorexia, which reduced piglet growth. DON also induced immunomodulation, oxidative stress, and downregulated vitamin D status. The vitamin E and C supplementation and the combination of vitamins E, C, and 25(OH)D3 provided protection against DON contamination by not only decreasing blood and liver oxidative stress markers, but also by increasing antioxidant enzymes and tocopherol levels in blood, indicating improved antioxidant defense mechanisms. The combination of vitamins also restored the vitamin D status. After LPS challenge, DON contamination decreased intestinal and liver antioxidant statuses and increased inflammation markers. The addition of vitamins E and C to DON-contaminated feed reduced markers of inflammation and improved the antioxidant status after the LPS immune stimulation. The combination of all these vitamins also reduced the oxidative stress markers and the inflammation in the intestine and mesenteric lymph nodes, suggesting an anti-inflammatory effect.
