RESUMO

Soybean is a pulse which has considerable nutritional value due to its high protein, fibers and polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) contents. It also contains phytoestrogenic compounds that definitely hinder its recommendation for general consumption. Contrary to ancient times, when soybeans were boiled, modern commercial soy foods can contain up to 150 mg/100g of estrogenic isoflavones. Interestingly, current estimations of isoflavone intake in the literature do not distinguish between the origins of soy food, i.e., whether it is homemade or commercial. As a result, the isoflavone exposure in Asian countries may well be overestimated. This study aims to demonstrate, based on step-by-step monitoring of isoflavones, that traditional and domestic treatments, leveraging isoflavones water-solubility, can indeed significantly reduce their content in soy foods. Indeed, when compared to commercial foods, the isoflavone content was found to be 20, 2.6, 4.5 and 9.8 times lower in "homemade" soy juice, tofu, tempeh and miso, respectively. Additionally, water soaking was found to reduce the isoflavones levels in soy-textured proteins by more than 70%. Hence, this simple process has the potential to help drastically reduce overall xenoestrogens exposure. This study could serve as a basis for establishing the isoflavones Reference Dose and issuing food safety guidelines.

RESUMO

Radioactive iodine isotopes especially 131I are used for diagnosis and treatment of different types of cancer diseases. Due to the leak of radioactive iodine into the patient's urine in turn, the wastewater would be contaminated, so it is worth preparing a novel adsorption green material to remove the radioactive iodine from wastewater efficiently. The removal of 127I and 131I contaminants from aqueous solution is a problem of interest. Therefore, this work presents a new study for removing the stable iodine 127I- and radioactive iodine 131I from aqueous solutions by using the novel nano adsorbent (Nano ZnO/MWCNTs) which is synthesized by the arc discharge method. It is an economic method for treating contaminated water from undesired dissolved iodine isotopes. The optimal conditions for maximum removal are (5 mg/100 ml) as optimum dose with shacking (200 rpm) for contact time of (60 min), at (25 °C) in an acidic medium of (pH = 5). After the adsorption process, the solution is filtrated and the residual iodide (127I-) is measured at a maximum UV wavelength absorbance of 225 nm. The maximum adsorption capacity is (15.25 mg/g); therefore the prepared nano adsorbent (Nano ZnO/MWCNTs) is suitable for treating polluted water from low iodide concentrations. The adsorption mechanism of 127I- on to the surface of (Nano ZnO/MWCNTs) is multilayer physical adsorption according to Freundlich isotherm model and obeys the Pseudo-first order kinetic model. According to Temkin isotherm model the adsorption is exothermic. The removal efficiency of Nano ZnO/MWCNTs for stable iodine (127I-) from aqueous solutions has reached 97.23%, 89.75%, and 64.78% in case of initial concentrations; 0.1843 ppm, 0.5014 ppm and 1.0331 ppm, respectively. For the prepared radio iodine (131I-) solution of radioactivity (20 µCi), the dose of nano adsorbent was (10 mg/100 ml) and the contact time was (60 min) at (pH = 5) with shacking (200 rpm) at (25 °C). The filtration process was done by using a syringe filter of a pore size (450 nm) after 2 days to equilibrate. The removal efficiency reached (34.16%) after the first cycle of treatment and the percentage of residual radio iodine was (65.86%). The removal efficiency reached (94.76%) after five cycles of treatment and the percentage of residual radio iodine was (5.24%). This last percentage was less than (42.15%) which produces due to the natural decay during 10 days.

RESUMO

SiO2@TiO2 core-shell nanoparticles were successfully synthesized via a simple, reproducible, and low-cost method and tested for methylene blue adsorption and UV photodegradation, with a view to their application in wastewater treatment. The monodisperse SiO2 core was obtained by the classical Stöber method and then coated with a thin layer of TiO2, followed by calcination or hydrothermal treatments. The properties of SiO2@TiO2 core-shell NPs resulted from the synergy between the photocatalytic properties of TiO2 and the adsorptive properties of SiO2. The synthesized NPs were characterized using FT-IR spectroscopy, HR-TEM, FE-SEM, and EDS. Zeta potential, specific surface area, and porosity were also determined. The results show that the synthesized SiO2@TiO2 NPs that are hydrothermally treated have similar behaviors and properties regardless of the hydrothermal treatment type and synthesis scale and better performance compared to the SiO2@TiO2 calcined and TiO2 reference samples. The generation of reactive species was determined by EPR, and the photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the methylene blue (MB) removal in aqueous solution under UV light. Hydrothermally treated SiO2@TiO2 showed the highest adsorption capacity and photocatalytic removal of almost 100% of MB after 15 min in UV light, 55 and 89% higher compared to SiO2 and TiO2 reference samples, respectively, while the SiO2@TiO2 calcined sample showed 80%. It was also observed that the SiO2-containing samples showed a considerable adsorption capacity compared to the TiO2 reference sample, which improved the MB removal. These results demonstrate the efficient synergy effect between SiO2 and TiO2, which enhances both the adsorption and photocatalytic properties of the nanomaterial. A possible photocatalytic mechanism was also proposed. Also noteworthy is that the performance of the upscaled HT1 sample was similar to one of the lab-scale synthesized samples, demonstrating the potentiality of this synthesis methodology in producing candidate nanomaterials for the removal of contaminants from wastewater.

RESUMO

Contamination of water resources by toxic metals and opportunistic pathogens remains a serious challenge. The development of nano-adsorbents with desired features to tackle this problem is a continuously evolving field. Here, magnetic mesoporous carbon nanospheres grafted by antimicrobial polyhexamethylene biguanidine (PHMB) are reported. Detailed mechanistic investigations reveal that the electrostatic stabilizer modified magnetic nanocore interfaced mesoporous shell can be programmatically regulated to tune the size and related morphological properties. The core-shell nano-adsorbent shows tailorable shell thickness (≈20-55 nm), high surface area (363.47 m2 g-1 ), pore volume (0.426 cm3 g-1 ), radially gradient pores (11.26 nm), and abundant biguanidine functionality. Importantly, the nano-adsorbent has high adsorption capacity for toxic thallium (Tl(I) ions (≈559 mg g-1 ), excellent disinfection against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli (>99.99% at 2 and 2.5 µg mL-1 ), ultrafast disinfection kinetics rate (>99.99% within ≈4 min), and remarkable regeneration capability when exposed to polluted water matrices. The Tl(I) removal is attributed to surface complexation and physical adsorption owing to open ended mesopores, while disinfection relies on contact of terminal biguanidines with phospholipid head groups of membrane. The significance of this work lies in bringing up effective synchronic water purification technology to combat pathogenic microorganisms and toxic metal.

RESUMO

Low removal efficiency, long treatment time, and high energy consumption hinder advanced and eco-friendly use of traditional adsorbents and separation membranes. Here, a class of amphiphilically modified 2D porous polymeric nanosandwich is designed and is subsequently assembled into adsorptive membranes. The 2D nanosandwich is gifted with high porosity and excellent pore accessibility, demonstrating rapid adsorption kinetics. The as-assembled membrane integrates unimpeded interlayer channels and well-developed, amphiphilic, and highly accessible intralayer nanopores, leading to ultrafast water permeation (1.2 × 104  L m-2  h-1  bar-1 ), high removal efficiency, and easy regeneration. The family of the membrane can be expanded by changing amphiphilic functional groups, further providing treatment of a wide-spectrum of pollutants, including aromatic compounds, pesticide, and pharmaceuticals. It is believed that the novel amphiphilically modified adsorptive membrane offers a distinct water treatment strategy with ultrahigh water permeation and efficient pollutants removal performances, and provides a multiple-in-one solution to the detection and elimination of pollutants.

RESUMO

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) feature maximum atomic utilization efficiency; however, the loading amount, dispersibility, synthesis cost, and regulation of the electronic structure are factors that need to be considered in water treatment. In this study, kaolinite, a natural layered clay mineral, is applied as the support for g-C3 N4 and single Fe atoms (FeSA-NGK). The FeSA-NGK composite exhibits an impressive degradation performance toward the target pollutant (>98% degradation rate in 10 min), and catalytic stability across consecutive runs (90% reactivity maintained after three runs in a fluidized-bed catalytic unit) under peroxymonosulfate (PMS)/visible light (Vis) synergetic system. The introduction of kaolinite promotes the loading amount of single Fe atoms (2.57 wt.%), which is a 14.2% increase compared to using a bare catalyst without kaolinite, and improved the concentration of N vacancies, thereby optimizing the regulation of the electronic structure of the single Fe atoms. It is discovered that the single Fe atoms successfully occupied five coordinated N atoms and combined with a neighboring N vacancy. Consequently, this regulated the local electronic structure of single Fe atoms, which drives the electrons of N atoms to accumulate on the Fe centers. This study opens an avenue for the design of clay-based SACs for water purification.

RESUMO

The purpose of the study was to investigate the quality and reliability of YouTube videos as a source of information in water treatments. We searched videos on YouTube ( www.youtube.com ) using the following keywords: "health resort medicine," "spa treatment," "spa therapy," "hydrotherapy," "thermal medicine," "balneology," and "balneotherapy" on June 17th, 2021. The global quality scale (GQS) was used to evaluate the quality of the videos. The assessment of reliability was evaluated using the modified DISCERN tool. Some other video parameters and sources of the videos were also recorded. One hundred twenty-one (121) videos were analyzed. The most common video source was advertisement (46.3%). GQS and modified DISCERN median scores were generally low. They were superior for "hydrotherapy" and "balneotherapy" and were also higher in videos uploaded by health-related persons or organizations (physicians, health-related professionals, and health-related websites). A statistically significant positive correlation was found between investigated parameters (like view ratio, number of likes, video power index, video length) and GQS. Only video length was correlated with modified DISCERN for investigated parameters. The median video power index scores were statistically higher for "spa therapy" and "spa treatment." The YouTube content linked with water treatments has poor quality and reliability most of time. The hydrotherapy and balneotherapy keywords have the best quality and reliability. We think that designers of water treatment videos should involve health professionals more often so that the content of their video will better explain the details of medical conditions or interventions. The scientific experts should ensure a consensus in terminology to straighten the awareness of water treatments for patients and physicians.

RESUMO

Clean water and sanitation for the world population is one of the most important challenges established by the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations since worldwide, one in three people do not have access to safe drinking water. Groundwater, one of the main sources of fresh water, has been considerably damaged by human activities. Nevertheless, while numerous plants are globally aimed at removing pollutants from surface waters, a much scarcer number of facilities have focused on groundwater remediation. Nowadays, there is increasing concern about the presence of nitrates (NO3-) in groundwaters as a consequence of the intensive use of fertilizers and other anthropogenic sources, such as sewage or industrial wastewater discharge. In this context, the selection and development of highly effective and low-cost solutions for the sustainable management of groundwater resources need to be addressed. Thus, this work collects data from the literature regarding the presence of nitrates in groundwater, and, simultaneously, it reviews the main alternatives available to remove NO3- from groundwater sources. A total of 292 sites have been analyzed categorized by continents, carefully discussing the possible origins of nitrate pollution. In addition, a discussion is carried out of the different technologies currently employed to treat groundwater, highlighting the progress made and the main challenges to be overcome. Finally, the review gathers the data available in the literature for nitrate treatment plants at full-scale.

RESUMO

This study describes the fabrication of novel buckypaper membranes through the dispersion of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in the presence of surfactants metal oxide nano-catalysis Zinc oxide and magnesium oxide (ZnO and MgO) glycerol carbonate separately. Following vacuum filtration of the scattered solutions, self-supporting membranes known as buckypapers (BPs) were produced. The suggested membranes were employed for the efficient removal of heavy metals. The obtained data indicated that the incorporation of both glycerol carbonates prepared by two different nano metal oxides enhanced the permeability of MWCNTs membranes rejection efficiency. The characterization of the synthesized metal oxide nanoparticles, as well as the physicochemical and morphological properties of the membranes, were investigated. The rejection capabilities of membranes for the heavy metal ions were examined. Moreover, the suggested MWCNTs/ZnO nano-catalyst glycerol carbonate BP membrane displayed high rejection efficiency for heavy metals (Cd2+, Cu2+, Co2+, Ni2+, and Pb2+) than that prepared from the MgO nano-catalyst one.

RESUMO

Aquacultures are a sector facing a huge development: farmers usually applying antibiotics to treat and/or prevent diseases. Consequently, effluents from aquaculture represent a source of antibiotics for receiving waters, where they pose a potential threat due to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) induction. This has recently become a major concern and it is expectable that regulations on antibiotics' discharge will be established in the near future. Therefore, it is urgent to develop treatments for their removal from wastewater. Among the different possibilities, photodegradation under solar radiation may be a sustainable option. Thus, this review aims at providing a survey on photolysis and photocatalysis in view of their application for the degradation of antibiotics from aquaculture wastewater. Experimental facts, factors affecting antibiotics' removal and employed photocatalysts were hereby addressed. Moreover, gaps in this research area, as well as future challenges, were identified.

RESUMO

Emerging microcontaminants benzophenone (BP), benzophenone-3 (BP-3) and caffeine (CF) are widely used anthropogenic markers from a group of pharmaceuticals and personal care products. They have different logD values and charges at neutral pH (2.96 neutral for BP; 3.65 negative and neutral for BP-3; 0.28 and neutral for CF). The goal of this study was to assess the efficacy of coagulation/flocculation/sedimentation (C/F/S), adsorption onto two types of powdered activated carbon (PAC)/sedimentation (PAC/S) and the combination of these two processes in different dosing sequences (PAC/C/F/S) and with/without ultrafiltration (powdered activated carbon/ultrafiltration-PAC/UF, coagulation/UF-CoA/UF) for the removal of selected micropollutants from river water. It was shown that the removal efficiency of benzophenones by coagulation depends on the season, while CF was moderately removed (40-70%). The removal of neutral BP by two PACs unexpectedly differed (near 40% and ˃93%), while the removal of BP-3 was excellent (>95%). PACs were not efficient for the removal of hydrophilic CF. Combined PAC/C/F/S yielded excellent removal for BP and BP-3 regardless of PAC type only when the PAC addition was followed by C/F/S, while C/F/S efficiency for CF diminished. The combination of UF with PAC or coagulant showed also high efficacy for benzophenones, but was negligible for CF removal.

RESUMO

In recent years, the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing system has been rapidly developed and applied in accurate estimation of crop parameters and yield at farm scale. To develop the major contribution of UAV multispectral images in predicting winter wheat leaf area index (LAI), chlorophyll content (called soil and plant analyzer development [SPAD]), and yield under different water treatments (low water level, medium water level, and high water level), vegetation indices (VIs) originating from UAV multispectral images were used during key winter wheat growth stages. The estimation performances of the models (linear regression, quadratic polynomial regression, and exponential and multiple linear regression models) on the basis of VIs were compared to get the optimal prediction method of crop parameters and yield. Results showed that LAI and SPAD derived from VIs both had high correlations compared with measured data, with determination coefficients of 0.911 and 0.812 (multivariable regression [MLR] model, normalized difference VI [NDVI], soil adjusted VI [SAVI], enhanced VI [EVI], and difference VI [DVI]), 0.899 and 0.87 (quadratic polynomial regression, NDVI), and 0.749 and 0.829 (quadratic polynomial regression, NDVI) under low, medium, and high water levels, respectively. The LAI and SPAD derived from VIs had better potential in estimating winter wheat yield by using multivariable linear regressions, compared to the estimation yield based on VIs directly derived from UAV multispectral images alone by using linear regression, quadratic polynomial regression, and exponential models. When crop parameters (LAI and SPAD) in the flowering period were adopted to estimate yield by using multiple linear regressions, a high correlation of 0.807 was found, while the accuracy was over 87%. Importing LAI and SPAD obtained from UAV multispectral imagery based on VIs into the yield estimation model could significantly enhance the estimation performance. This study indicates that the multivariable linear regression could accurately estimate winter wheat LAI, SPAD, and yield under different water treatments, which has a certain reference value for the popularization and application of UAV remote sensing in precision agriculture.

RESUMO

Removing heavy metals from wastewaters is a challenging process that requires constant attention and monitoring, as heavy metals are major wastewater pollutants that are not biodegradable and thus accumulate in the ecosystem. In addition, the persistent nature, toxicity and accumulation of heavy metal ions in the human body have become the driving force for searching new and more efficient water treatment technologies to reduce the concentration of heavy metal in waters. Because the conventional techniques will not be able to keep up with the growing demand for lower heavy metals levels in drinking water and wastewaters, it is becoming increasingly challenging to implement technologically advanced alternative water treatments. Nanotechnology offers a number of advantages compared to other methods. Nanomaterials are more efficient in terms of cost and volume, and many process mechanisms are better and faster at nanoscale. Although nanomaterials have already proved themselves in water technology, there are specific challenges related to their stability, toxicity and recovery, which led to innovations to counteract them. Taking into account the multidisciplinary research of water treatment for the removal of heavy metals, the present review provides an updated report on the main technologies and materials used for the removal of heavy metals with an emphasis on nanoscale materials and processes involved in the heavy metals removal and detection.

RESUMO

An environmentally benign, one-pot and highly scalable method was presented to produce biogenic silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) using the solid-state synthetic route. Four plant-derived candidate bio-reductants (i.e., Datura stramonium, Papaver orientale, Mentha piperita, and Cannabis sativa) were investigated to compare the efficiency of solid-state route and typical solution method. M. piperita was selected as the best plant resource to produce totally pure and uniform Ag NPs (average diameter of 15 nm) without any aggregation. The purity and size of biogenic Ag NPs, were tailored by adjusting the M. piperita leaf powder/silver nitrate weight ratio and temperature. The as-synthesized Ag NPs were effectively utilized as an eco-friendly nanoadsorbent in water remediation to remove a model dye (i.e., crystal violet). The key factors affecting on the sorption process (i.e., nanoadsorbent dosage, temperature, pH, dye initial concentration, and shaking time) were investigated. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model was well fitted to the sorption process and at the optimum sorption conditions, based on the Langmuir model, the adsorption capacity was found to be 704.7 mg/g. The current, cost effective and feasible method could be considered as an applicable strategy to produce green, reusable and proficient Ag NPs as nanoadsorbents for removal of dyes from contaminated water.

RESUMO

Solar water disinfection (SODIS) is a simple, inexpensive and sustainable Household Water Treatment (HWT) that is appropriate for low-income countries or emergency situations. Usually, SODIS involves solar exposure of water contained in transparent polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles for a minimum of 6 h. Sunlight, especially UVB radiation, has been demonstrated to photoinactivate bacteria, viruses and protozoa. In this work, an in-depth study of the optical and mechanical properties, weathering and production prices of polymeric materials has been carried out to identify potential candidate materials for manufacturing SODIS devices. Three materials were ruled out (polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene (PE)) and four materials were initially selected for study: polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), polypropylene (PP), polycarbonate (PC) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). These plastics transmit sufficient solar radiation to kill waterborne pathogens with production costs compensated by their durability under solar exposure. A predictive model has been developed to quantitatively estimate the radiation available for SODIS inside the device as a function of the material and thickness. This tool has two applications: to evaluate design parameters such as thickness, and to estimate experimental requirements such as solar exposure time. In this work, this model evaluated scenarios involving different plastic materials, device thicknesses, and pathogens (Escherichia coli bacterium, MS2 virus and Cryptosporidium parvum protozoon). The developed Solar UV Calculator model is freely available and can be also applied to other customized materials and conditions.

RESUMO

Photoactive nanomaterials are receiving increasing attention due to their potential application to light-driven degradation of water and gas-phase pollutants. However, to exploit the strong potential of photoactive materials and access their properties require a fine tuning of their size/shape dependent chemical-physical properties and on the ability to integrate them in photo-reactors or to deposit them on large surfaces. Therefore, the synthetic approach, as well as post-synthesis manipulation could strongly affect the final photocatalytic properties of nanomaterials. The potential application of photoactive nanomaterials in the environmental field includes the abatement of organic pollutant in water, water disinfection, and abatement of gas-phase pollutants in outdoor and indoor applications.

RESUMO

PREMISE OF THE STUDY: Phenotypic plasticity is an important means through which organisms cope with environmental variability. We investigated seedling plasticity in the green ash eucalypts within a phylogenetic framework to examine the relationship between plasticity and evolutionary history. The green ashes are a diverse group, which include the tallest flowering plant in the world (Eucalyptus regnans) and a rare mallee less than 1 m tall (E. cunninghamii). METHODS: Seedlings of 12 species were exposed to high and low nutrient and water availability in a factorial experiment. Leaf trait and total plant plasticity were evaluated using the phenotypic plasticity index. A phylogeny of the species was estimated using genome-wide scans. KEY RESULTS: We found significant differences in functional traits across species, growth forms, and substrates in response to changes in resource availability. Many traits (e.g., leaf width) were highly plastic for most species. Interspecific differences in leaf-level plasticity was significant, however plasticity was not correlated with phylogeny. Species with broader environmental niches had higher leaf-level plasticity than species with narrower environmental ranges. CONCLUSIONS: Plastic responses to environmental variability can differ widely among closely related species, and plasticity is therefore likely to be associated with many factors, including habitat and range size, as well as evolutionary history. Our results provided insights for species delimitation in Eucalyptus, which have management implications. Because of the high number of rare species and that other species are commercially important, a more comprehensive understanding of plasticity is essential for predicting their response to changing climates.

RESUMO

This study characterized the fate of nano-TiO2 in both powder (TiO2(P)) and suspension (TiO2(S)) forms in simulated drinking water treatments. Nano-TiO2 solutions of 0.1, 1.0, and 10mg/L were prepared with deionized water and raw waters from the Changxing and Fengshan Water Treatment Plants in Taiwan to assess the effects of water matrices on nano-TiO2 behavior during water treatment. After the laboratory simulated water treatment, including pre-chlorination, coagulation, sedimentation, filtration and post-chlorination, the residual Ti concentration ranged from 2.7 to 47.4% in different treatment units and overall removal efficiency was between 52.6% and 97.3% in all cases except for nano-TiO2 at concentration of 0.1mg/L. Overall removal efficiency for the TiO2 at 10mg/L concentration ranged from 9.3 to 53.5%. Sedimentation (after coagulation) and filtration were the most important processes for removing nano-TiO2 due in part to particle agglomeration, which was confirmed by size distribution and zeta potential measurements. The size of nano-TiO2 increased from 21-36nm to 4490nm in the supernatant after sedimentation, and subsequent filtration treatment further removed all agglomerates at size >1µm. Zeta potential revealed interactions between nano-TiO2 particles and anionic functional groups or negatively-charged natural organic matters, leading to a decrease in surface charge. After sedimentation and filtration, the zeta potential of supernatants and filtrates were close to zero, meaning the absence of nanoparticles. The highest Ti removal after sedimentation occurred in Fengshan raw water due to higher ionic strength and coagulant dosage applied. On the other hand, the surfactant additives in TiO2(S) promoted dispersion of nano-TiO2 particles, which in turn led to lower particle removal. SEM images of nanoparticles after chlorination or coagulation revealed the coverage of nano-TiO2 particles by viscous substances and formation of colloidal structures.

RESUMO

The degradation of methylene blue in aqueous solution as a model dye using a non thermal microwave (2.45 GHz) plasma jet at atmospheric pressure has been investigated. Argon has been used as feed gas and aqueous solutions with different concentrations of the dye were treated using the effluent from plasma jet in a remote exposure. The removal efficiency increased as the dye concentration decreased from 250 to 5 ppm. Methylene blue degrades after different treatment times, depending on the experimental plasma conditions. Thus, kinetic constants up to 0.177 min-1 were obtained. The higher the Ar flow, the faster the degradation rate. Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) was used to gather information about the species present in the gas phase, specifically excited argon atoms. Argon excited species and hydrogen peroxide play an important role in the degradation of the dye. In fact, the conversion of methylene blue was directly related to the density of argon excited species in the gas phase and the concentration of hydrogen peroxide in the aqueous liquid phase. Values of energy yield at 50% dye conversion of 0.296 g/kWh were achieved. Also, the use of two plasma applicators in parallel has been proven to improve energy efficiency.

RESUMO

This research focused on the effects of inorganic water constituents on the efficiency of vacuum UV (VUV) for the degradation of micropollutants in surface water supplies. Atrazine was used as a model miropollutant, and bicarbonate, sulphate, and nitrate were used as the most common inorganic constituents in the water matrix. First, the absorbance of radiation at 254 and 185 nm was measured in the presence of different ions. At 254 nm, only nitrate showed a measurable absorption coefficient of [Formula: see text] = 3.51 M[Formula: see text] cm[Formula: see text], and all other ions showed a molar absorption coefficient below the detection limit. However, at 185 nm, all the ions showed high absorption coefficients, with nitrate giving the highest absorption coefficient of [Formula: see text] = 5568 M[Formula: see text] cm[Formula: see text]. Second, the hydroxyl radical (HO[Formula: see text]) scavenging effects of the same inorganic ions were evaluated; nitrate and bicarbonate showed a negative effect during the UV/H2O2 and VUV advanced oxidation processes. Sulfate was photolyzed with 185 nm UV to form HO[Formula: see text], and for this reason, it assisted the degradation of the target micropollutant, as demonstrated by increases in the degradation rate constant. An additional component of this work involved developing a method for measuring the quantum yield of atrazine at 185 nm. This made it possible to distinguish the contribution of OH radical attach from that of direct photolysis towards the degradation of atrazine.
