RESUMO

In silico design of artificial riboswitches is a challenging and intriguing task. Since experimental approaches such as in vitro selection are time-consuming processes, computational tools that guide riboswitch design are desirable to accelerate the design process. In this chapter, we describe the usage of the MODENA web server to design ON riboswitches on the basis of a multi-objective genetic algorithm and RNA secondary structure prediction.

RESUMO

This methodological protocol describes the step-by-step process of identifying the relevant international academic literature to be reviewed within the project 'The affective economies of emerging private renting markets: understanding tenants and landlords in postcommunist Romania" (AFFECTIVE-PRS). It presents: (1) the preliminary decisions taken related to the breadth of the review (choice of databases, type of research, type of reference, searching fields); (2) the operationalisation of keywords and Boolean strings; (3) the further calibration of the searching parameters through piloting; (4) the final retrieval of relevant references through systematic and manual searches; and (5) the geographical coverage of the retained literature. While the paper demonstrates the rigour of the methodological approach taken, it also opens up the space for other scholars to scrutinise, replicate or adjust this approach to their own work.

Spider orb web is a sophisticated structure that needs to fulfil multiple roles, such as trapping prey and transmitting web-borne signals. When building their web, heavier spiders tend to increase the pretension on the web, which seems counterintuitive since a tighter web would decrease the chances of stopping and retaining prey. In this article, we claim that heavier orb-weaving spiders increase tension on the web in order to reduce the attenuation of the vibratory signal coming from the bottom part of the web. We support our claim by first building a detailed spider web model, which is tuned by a tension-adjusting algorithm to fit the experimentally observed profiles. Then, the effects of the spider weight and the web tension on the signal transmittance properties are investigated using state-of-the-art finite element analysis tools.

PURPOSE: Web creep and scar contracture are established complications of syndactyly reconstruction; however, few reports characterize risk factors for revision surgery. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the rate and risk factors of reoperation for congenital hand syndactyly. METHODS: Patients undergoing syndactyly reconstruction from 2007 to 2021 at a single children's hospital were reviewed. Cases with less than 1 year of follow-up were excluded. Demographic, surgical, and outcomes data were recorded by each web space to account for mixed treatments. RESULTS: In total, 514 web spaces in 231 children were reviewed with a mean follow-up of 6.0 years after primary reconstruction; 66 (12.8%) web spaces in 51 (22.1%) children underwent revision. The most common procedures were web space deepening due to web creep (57.9% of cases) and digital scar contracture release (45.6%); these were augmented in a minority (17.5%) of cases by other aesthetic/functional procedures. Revisions occurred at a median of 1.7 years after primary reconstruction. First web spaces (thumb-index finger) were most frequently reoperated (33.3%). On multivariable analysis, first web space involvement, complete syndactyly, and complications after the primary reconstruction significantly increased odds of revision. Age at primary reconstruction was not a significant predictor. Following revision, 10.5% of cases had recurrent web creep, and 14.0% had recurrent scar contracture. Eight (1.6%) web spaces in seven (3.0%) children required multiple revisions. CONCLUSIONS: Approximately 13% of syndactyly reconstructions (22% of patients) require reoperation. Most revisions occur within 4 years of primary reconstruction. Complete syndactyly, complications after the primary reconstruction, and first web space involvement increase the risk of revision; age at primary reconstruction is not a risk factor. Revision outcomes mirror the index procedure, with 10% to 14% of revised web spaces experiencing recurrent web creep or contracture. TYPE OF STUDY/LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Therapeutic IV.

BACKGROUND: Early neurodevelopmental risks, compounded with traumatic medical experiences, contribute to emotional and behavioral challenges in as many as 1 in 2 children with congenital heart disease (CHD). Parents report a strong need for supports; yet, there remains a lack of accessible, evidence-based behavioral interventions available for children with CHD and their families. I-InTERACT-North is a web-based stepped-care mental health program designed to support family well-being and reduce behavioral concerns through positive parenting for children with early medical complexity. In previous pilot studies, the program was effective in increasing positive parenting skills and decreasing child behavior problems, with high parent-reported acceptability. This paper presents the protocol for the first randomized study of stepped-care parent support for families of children with CHD. OBJECTIVE: This study will involve a single-site, 2-arm, single-blind randomized controlled trial to evaluate (1) the feasibility and acceptability of a web-based stepped-care parent support program (I-InTERACT-North) and (2) the effectiveness of the program in enhancing positive parenting skills and reducing behavioral concerns among families of children with CHD. METHODS: Families will be randomized (1:1) to either receive treatment or continue with care as usual for 12 months. Randomization will be stratified by child's sex assigned at birth and baseline parent-reported child behavior intensity. Primary outcomes include positive parenting skills and child behavior at baseline, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months. Secondary outcomes include parental mental health, quality of life, service usage, and feasibility including program reach and adherence. A sample size of 244 families will provide >95% power to detect an effect size of d=0.64. Based on attrition data from pilot studies, a target of 382 families will be enrolled. Parent reports of acceptability, adoption, and suggested adaptability of the program will be examined using cross-case thematic analyses. Primary efficacy analysis will be conducted using an intent-to-treat approach. Generalized estimating equations will be used to examine changes in positive parenting. Child behavior, quality of life, and parent mental health will be tested with repeated-measures analyses. Additional sensitivity and replication analyses will also be carried out. RESULTS: Recruitment began in February 2024, and recruitment and follow-up will continue until January 2029. We anticipate results in late 2029. CONCLUSIONS: This study aims to test the effectiveness of I-InTERACT-North web-based stepped-care parent support in improving positive parenting skills and reducing child behavior problems in families of children with CHD compared with a care as usual control group. Results will inform future clinical implementation and expansion of this program among families of children with early medical conditions. BACKGROUND: The online BeUpstanding™ program is an eight-week workplace-delivered intervention for desk-based workers to raise awareness of the benefits of sitting less and moving more and build a supportive culture for change. A workplace representative (the "champion") delivers the program, which includes a workshop where teams collectively choose their sit less/move more strategies. A toolkit provides the champion with a step-by-step guide and associated resources to support program uptake, delivery, and evaluation. Here we report on the main findings from the Australian national implementation trial of BeUpstanding. METHODS: Recruitment (12/06/2019 to 30/09/2021) was supported by five policy and practice partners, with desk-based work teams from across Australia targeted. Effectiveness was measured via a single arm, repeated-measures trial. Data were collected via online surveys, toolkit analytics, and telephone calls with champions. The RE-AIM framework guided evaluation, with adoption/reach (number and characteristics); effectiveness (primary: self-reported workplace sitting time); implementation (completion of core components; costs); and, maintenance intentions reported here. Linear mixed models, correcting for cluster, were used for effectiveness, with reach, adoption, implementation, and maintenance outcomes described. RESULTS: Of the 1640 website users who signed-up to BeUpstanding during the recruitment period, 233 were eligible, 198 (85%) provided preliminary consent, and 118 (50.6%) champions consented and started the trial, with 94% (n = 111 champions) completing. Trial participation was from across Australia and across industries, and reached 2,761 staff, with 2,248 participating in the staff survey(s): 65% female; 64% university educated; 17% from a non-English speaking background. The program effectively changed workplace sitting (-38.5 [95%CI -46.0 to -28.7] minutes/8-hour workday) and all outcomes targeted by BeUpstanding (behaviours and culture), with small-to-moderate statistically-significant effects observed. All participating teams (n = 94) completed at least 5/7 core steps; 72.4% completed all seven. Most champions spent $0 (72%) or >$0-$5 (10%) per team member; most (67/70 96%) intended to continue or repeat the program. CONCLUSIONS: BeUpstanding can be adopted and successfully implemented by a range of workplaces, reach a diversity of staff, and be effective at creating a supportive culture for teams of desk-based workers to sit less and move more. Learnings will inform optimisation of the program for longer-term sustainability. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ACTRN12617000682347.

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic, progressive neurodegenerative disorder primarily affecting the elderly. Relevant studies suggest a significant connection between the mitochondria and PD. Publications exploring this connection have steadily increased in recent years. This study employs a bibliometric approach to comprehensively analyze the current status and future directions of the research on mitochondria and PD. Method: We retrieved data from the Web of Science database and used CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and "Bibliometrix" software to visually analyze various aspects of the research field. These aspects included the number of published papers, contributing countries and institutions, authors, publishing journals, cited references, and keywords. Results: Our analysis identified a total of 3,291 publications involving 14,670 authors from 2,836 organizations across 78 countries. The publication volume exhibited a continuous upward trend from 1999 to 2023. The United States emerged as the leading force in this research area, contributing the highest number of high-quality publications. Notably, the United States collaborated extensively with Germany and the United Kingdom. The University of Pittsburgh stood out as the most prolific institution. Harvard University had the highest academic influence and closely cooperated with the University of Pittsburgh, Juntendo University, and McGill University. Dr. Hattori Nobutaka was identified as the most prolific author, while Dr. Youle, Richard J emerged as the most influential author based on the highest average citation frequency. The Journal of Neurochemistry was the most published journal. The most co-cited paper was titled "Hereditary early-onset Parkinson's disease caused by mutations in PINK1." The major keywords included oxidative stress, alpha-synuclein, pink1, mitophagy, and mitochondrial dysfunction. Mitofusin 2, ubiquitin, and mitochondrial quality control have been identified as new research hotspots in recent years. Conclusion: Mitochondria-PD research is experiencing a steady increase in activity, fueled by increasing close collaboration between countries and different institutions. However, there is a need to further strengthen collaboration and communication between developed and developing nations. Current research has focused on the specific mechanisms of mitochondrial dysfunction and their relationship with PD. Mitofusin 2, ubiquitin, and mitochondrial quality control are positioned to be the hotspots and future research directions.

In this study, I examine how users of an online Reddit community, r/IntellectualDarkWeb, forged an anti-establishment collective identity through practices of "heterodox scientific" reasoning. I do so through a discursive analysis of comments and posts made to r/IntellectualDarkWeb during the COVID-19 pandemic. First, I deploy the BERTopic algorithm to cluster my corpus and surface topics pertaining to COVID-19. Second, I engage in a qualitative content analysis of the relevant clusters to understand how discourses about COVID-19 were mobilized by subreddit users. I show that discussions about COVID-19 were polarized along "contrarian" and "anti-contrarian" lines, with significant implications for the subreddit's process of collective identity. Overwhelmingly, contrarian content that expressed skepticism towards vaccines, mistrust towards experts, and cynicism about the medical establishment was affirmed by r/IntellectualDarkWeb users. By contrast, anti-contrarian content that sought to counter anti-vaccine rhetoric, defend expertise, or criticize subreddit users for their contrarianism was penalized. A key factor in this dynamic was Reddit's scoring mechanism, which empowered users to publicly upvote contrarian affirming content while simultaneously downvoting anti-contrarian content. As users participated in sense making about COVID-19, they deployed Reddit's scoring mechanism to reinforce a contrarian collective identity oriented around a practice of heterodox science. My research shows the continued relevance of the concept of collective identity in the digital age and its utility for understanding contemporary reactionary social movements.

The advent of cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET), coupled with computational modeling, has enabled the creation of integrative 3D models of viruses, bacteria, and cellular organelles. These models, composed of thousands of macromolecules and billions of atoms, have historically posed significant challenges for manipulation and visualization without specialized molecular graphics tools and hardware. With the recent advancements in GPU rendering power and web browser capabilities, it is now feasible to render interactively large molecular scenes directly on the web. In this work, we introduce Mesoscale Explorer, a web application built using the Mol* framework, dedicated to the visualization of large-scale molecular models ranging from viruses to cell organelles. Mesoscale Explorer provides unprecedented access and insight into the molecular fabric of life, enhancing perception, streamlining exploration, and simplifying visualization of diverse data types, showcasing the intricate details of these models with unparalleled clarity.

Background: The co-occurrence of rheumatoid arthritis and depression typically exacerbates pain and leads to a range of adverse consequences, becoming a research hotspot in recent years. This study conducted the systematic retrieval of relevant articles within the past five years and employed bibliometric methods for scientometric analysis. Methods: Setting the keywords "Rheumatoid arthritis", "Depression" and "Depressive Disorder", relevant literature published between 2019 and 2023 was retrieved from the Web of Science database. Subsequently, the core information from the literature was subjected to visual analysis via CiteSpace software and bibliometric techniques. Results: A total of 974 articles related to rheumatoid arthritis and depression were identified through the search strategy, and 877 articles were retained for further analysis after duplicates. The United States (n=173), England (n=82), China (n=69), Canada (n=68), and Germany (n=54) ranked top five countries by publication count. The King's College London was the leading institution with the highest number of publications (n = 20). LANCET PSYCHIATRY was the most frequently cited journal (n = 72) despite having only one article. The top five authors with the largest number of publications include CHARLES N BERNSTEIN (n=14), RUTH ANN MARRIE (n=13), JOHN D FISK (n=12), CAROL A HITCHON (n=12) and SCOTT B PATTEN (n=12), and all these are based in Canada. The keywords with a centrality score exceeding 0.1 were depression, rheumatoid arthritis, symptom, quality of life, impact, fibromyalgia, disease activity, prevalence, inflammation, health, anxiety, pain, fatigue, disease, arthritis and disability. Conclusion: Related research between the co-occurrence of rheumatoid arthritis and depression was a persistent hotspot, but it still lacks of international collaboration and in-depth mechanistic exploration.

Objective: This study explored the influence of the life course on mental health by identifying key trends, seminal works, and themes in existing research. Additionally, it highlights the major discussions at the intersection of life course and mental health. Methods: Documents were extracted from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC), to systematically analyze themes on mental health outcomes across the life course. The analysis was based on key bibliometric tools, including VOSviewer 1.6.11, R Studio software, and GraphPad Prism 9 to analyze the evolution and impact of scholarly contributions in this domain. Results: The accumulated body of research concerning the life course's impact on mental health, which began to emerge around 1990 displayed a consistently upward trend. Predominant contributions originate from developed nations and frequently look into the psychosocial determinants of mental health over life course. Life course and mental health studies have been extensively infused with biopsychosocial frameworks that consider the role of genetic makeup, neurodevelopment, cognition, affect, sociocultural dynamics, and interpersonal relationships. Life course theory application in mental health highlight the substantive effects of accumulated adversities, notably social determinants of health, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and their implications for subsequent mental health outcomes. Conclusion: The nexus of life course and mental health outcomes demands further scholarly interrogation, particularly within underserved regions, to strengthen protective mechanisms for vulnerable populations.

Dissemination and Implementation science is dedicated to increasing the speed of evidence-based research translated into practice as guided by one or multiple D&I theories, models, and frameworks. The Dissemination and Implementation Models in Health Research and Practice web tool guides users on how to plan, select, combine, adapt, use, and assess theories, models, and frameworks. This paper describes usability testing to update the web tool. Iterative user testing was conducted with implementation science research and clinical participants to facilitate updates and optimize the functionality of the tool. A multi-step protocol involved quantitative and qualitative data collection including a survey, interviews, and a usability testing session. Data from the pre-testing surveys were summarized as frequencies. Data from the usability testing sessions were analyzed using a hybrid adapted deductive rapid matrix qualitative analysis. Data from the interviews were analyzed by deductive a priori coding. Fifteen interviewees represented different research and clinical groups and levels of expertise utilizing D&I TMFs. Participants were purposively selected to represent a range of disciplines and D&I expertise, all invited via one-time email. The 847 total interview comments were reduced by similarity to 259 comments, and 142 were feasible changes fitting the priorities of the web tool. Changes to content, format, and functionality are described in this paper. The iterative usability testing elicited improvements to the web tool including adding more examples, definitions, visuals, and tutorials and simplifying the written content. The web tool remains flexible for additions concerning health equity, de-implementation, and other issues. Background: Psychological violence is a serious global public health and social issue, attracting increasing research. Its adverse effects on individuals and society are significant. Given the negative impacts of psychological violence and the importance of maintaining mental health, we employed a bibliometric analysis of the literature on psychological violence over the past 20 years on a global scale. Objective: We aimed to elucidate the current research hotspots and development trends in psychological violence using bibliometrics and a visualization analysis, and provide ideas for related research. Methods: We searched three databases in the Web of Science Core Collection to obtain data from January 1, 2003, to December 31, 2022, and utilized VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and Scimago Graphica software to visualize authors, journals, countries, institutions, and collaboration and keyword networks. Results: Ultimately, 4,387 publications related to psychological violence were identified; the top three countries for the number of publications were the United States, England, and Canada, in that order; The top three institutions were the University of Toronto, King's College London, and Columbia University. Of 15,681 authors, the average publication rate was 0.28 articles per author, with Rodriguez-Carballeira A from Spain publishing the most articles; The top three disciplinary distributions were psychiatry, family Studies, and clinical psychology; Research hotspots included causes, harms, evaluation strategies, and interventions related to psychological violence. Conclusion: The increasing number of publications suggests greater interest among researchers in the interconnected domains of psychological violence, with the ongoing research reflecting stability and maturity. The current research focus is on the risk factors, manifestations, and consequences of psychological violence. In the future, potential emerging research trends include exploring measurement methods for psychological violence and identifying mitigation strategies. The global community has developed a well-established foundation for cooperation. However domestic research is lacking, indicating the need for enhancement and increased collaboration among researchers, institutions, and countries.

Large language models (LLMs) are a potential substitute for human-generated data and knowledge resources. This substitution, however, can present a significant problem for the training data needed to develop future models if it leads to a reduction of human-generated content. In this work, we document a reduction in activity on Stack Overflow coinciding with the release of ChatGPT, a popular LLM. To test whether this reduction in activity is specific to the introduction of this LLM, we use counterfactuals involving similar human-generated knowledge resources that should not be affected by the introduction of ChatGPT to such extent. Within 6 months of ChatGPT's release, activity on Stack Overflow decreased by 25% relative to its Russian and Chinese counterparts, where access to ChatGPT is limited, and to similar forums for mathematics, where ChatGPT is less capable. We interpret this estimate as a lower bound of the true impact of ChatGPT on Stack Overflow. The decline is larger for posts related to the most widely used programming languages. We find no significant change in post quality, measured by peer feedback, and observe similar decreases in content creation by more and less experienced users alike. Thus, LLMs are not only displacing duplicate, low-quality, or beginner-level content. Our findings suggest that the rapid adoption of LLMs reduces the production of public data needed to train them, with significant consequences.

Biofilms, essential for material circulation and energy flow in aquatic ecosystems, markedly enrich heavy metals in water environments. However, the impact of these accumulated metals on organisms feeding on biofilms remains poorly unknown. This study involved a year-long seasonal survey along the Bijiang River, located next to Asia's largest lead (Pb)-zinc (Zn) mine, conducted to investigate the role of biofilms in nutrient and metal transfer in food webs. In total, 355 biotic and abiotic samples, including water, biofilms, and aquatic biota, were analyzed for the presence of eight heavy metals (arsenic [As], cadmium, chromium, copper, Pb, nickel, Zn, and iron) as well as stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotopes. Wide ranges of δ13C and δ15N values indicated diverse dietary carbon sources and trophic positions in the Bijiang River (maximum trophic level: 4.28). A Bayesian mixing model revealed that periphytic biofilms were the dominant basal carbon source, especially in spring, whereas in summer, consumers exploited more diverse food sources, possibly because feeding on spring biofilms enhanced predator feeding efficiency. Metals tended to be biodiluted along food chains owing to their higher concentrations in biofilms and benthic organisms as well as their chemical forms. Although diet did not significantly affect heavy metal accumulation in fish, those relying on biofilms as the main carbon source showed significantly higher As (p = 0.048) and Pb (p = 0.007) levels compared with those relying on C4 plants. Overall, this study highlights the critical role of periphytic biofilms in nutrient and metal dynamics in aquatic food webs.

Diabetes mellitus is called as the "pandemic of the era" due to its rising prevalence. Since it is a disease that affects all spheres of life, it has an impact on the quality of life of individuals. This systematic review aims to examine the effect of web-based diabetes training programmes prepared for individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus on their quality of life. The PRISMA-P (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta Analysis Protocols) flowchart was used in the literature search stage. A comprehensive search was performed through the [MeSH] keywords (Web-based Intervention, Randomised Controlled Trial, HRQOL, Type 2 Diabetes) until May 8, 2024 in databases of PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct, Medline, CINAHL, EBSCO host, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar. Zotero software program was used to identify duplications of the obtained studies. Seven randomised controlled studies were included in the review. It was found that, most of the studies that were included in review showed that quality of life did not cause any significant difference in the level of quality of life; whereas, improvement was observed in quality-of-life levels in all of the experimental groups. Also, studies conducted for 1.5 to 3 months showed that web-based training was effective in improving the quality of life. Consequently, it is recommended that web-based trainings be long enough to prevent patients from dropping out of training, with possibility of an online individual interview, and follow-up periods of 1.5 to 3 months in order to achieve effective results. PROSPERO Number: CRD42024530777.

Water pollution with fluoride can cause dental fluorosis, skeletal deformities, and other diseases, posing serious harm to human health. To understand the development status, research hotspots, and frontier trends in fluoride-containing wastewater (FCW) treatment, this study employed bibliometric methods to visually analyze 2840 publications related to FCW treatment from the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) database. The "bibliometrix" package in R language, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace visualization software were utilized for the analysis. The results revealed a fluctuating upward trend in the annual number of publications, indicating ongoing deepening and development of research in this field. India and China exhibited the strongest research capacity, forming a cooperation network centered around these two countries. High-impact journals such as Desalination and Water Treatment, Journal of Hazardous Materials, and Chemical Engineering Journal frequently publish research related to FCW treatment. Keyword co-occurrence and burst analysis revealed that the current research hotspots in FCW treatment primarily focus on treatment methods (ion exchange, chemical coagulation/precipitation, adsorption, electrochemical, membrane separation, and fluidized bed crystallization), adsorption mechanism, and adsorbent design and optimization. Future research will likely focus on developing efficient treatment technologies and adsorption materials for FCW, as well as the recovery of fluoride resources from FCW, highlighting a dual approach to environmental sustainability and resource management. By employing bibliometrics, this study outlines the development status of FCW treatment and predicts the field's future trends, providing insights for understanding the development trajectory of this field.

AIM: To identify and summarize the content and effectiveness of existing supportive interventions for preparation for future care of community-dwelling older adults. DESIGN: A scoping review. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, Wanfang, China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Chinese medical journal databases were used to identify studies alongside a search for grey literature, from inception to December 1, 2023. RESULTS: In total, 530 records were retrieved. Ten studies met the inclusion criteria, with eight interventions. Two categories of interventions were highlighted: psycho-educational group and web-based decision support. The components included the introduction of preparation for future care, discussing resources, exploration of care preferences and identifying care planning. Outcomes were grouped into four: awareness and attitude towards preparation for future care, participation in preparation for future care, changes in mental health and well-being and feasibility and acceptability of interventions. CONCLUSION: Few studies have investigated interventions that promote preparation for future care in community-dwelling older adults. These interventions, deemed acceptable and feasible, have shown promising results in improving awareness and attitude, and participation in future care preparation. Nevertheless, the impact on mental health appeared mixed. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND PATIENT CARE: Supportive interventions should be developed with feasibility and acceptability to improve awareness and participation in future care preparation for community-dwelling older adults. IMPACT: This review lays a foundation for the pre-allocating of care resources, improving the quality of provided care and ultimately promoting healthy ageing. REPORTING METHOD: Reporting was guided by Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis extension for Scoping Reviews. We investigated trophic structures in rocky subtidal ecosystems transitioning from canopy-forming to barren states across coastlines with varying oceanographic conditions. We examined stable isotopes and functional traits of common invertebrate and fish taxa to understand the food-web consequences. We hypothesized that resource exploitation patterns of functional guilds would result in distinct isotopic niches, defining trophic diversity and niche. δ13C and δ15N ranges of invertebrate functional groups differentiated pelagic from benthic trophic pathways, reflecting flexible dietary use in the absence of macroalgae. Fish production relied on prey using pelagic and benthic basal resources. Trophic redundancy among consumers within functional guilds contributed to intrinsic trophic structure in barren ecosystems. The resulting community-wide trophic diversity has led to consistent niche widths and overlapping niche space. Overall, our findings highlight the crucial roles of consumers that persist with diverse functional guilds in conferring the adaptability of barren rocky ecosystems following habitat disturbance.

Contamination of aquatic food webs with nanomaterials poses a significant ecological and human health challenge. Ingestion of nanomaterials alongside food disrupts digestion and impairs physiological processes, with potential consequences for organism fitness and survival. Complex interactions between nanomaterials and biota further exacerbate the issue, influencing life-history strategies and ecosystem dynamics. Accumulation of nanomaterials within autotrophic and detritus-based food webs raises concerns about biomagnification, especially for top-level consumers and seafood-dependent human populations. Understanding the extent and impact of nanomaterial contamination on aquatic biota is crucial for effective mitigation strategies. To address this challenge, we conducted a comprehensive study evaluating the bioaccumulation effects of graphene oxide (GO), a commonly used nanomaterial, within an aquatic food chain. Using a gnotobiotic freshwater microcosm, we investigated the effects of micro- and nano-scale GO sheets on key organisms: green algae (Chlorella vulgaris), brine shrimp (Artemia salina), and zebrafish (Danio rerio). Two feeding regimes, direct ingestion and trophic transfer, were employed to assess GO uptake and transfer within the food web. Direct exposure involved individual organisms being exposed to either nano- or micro-scale GO sheets, while trophic transfer involved a sequential exposure pathway: algae exposed to GO sheets, artemias feeding on the algae, and zebrafish consuming the artemias. Our study provides critical insights into nanomaterial contamination in aquatic ecosystems. Physicochemical properties of GO sheets, including ζ-potential and dispersion, were influenced by salt culture media, resulting in aggregation under salt conditions. Microscopic imaging confirmed the bioaccumulation of GO sheets within organisms, indicating prolonged exposure and potential long-term effects. Notably, biodistribution analysis in zebrafish demonstrated the penetration of nano-sized GO into the intestinal wall, signifying direct interaction with vital organs. Exposure to GO resulted in increased zebrafish mortality and impaired reproductive performance, particularly through trophic transfer. These findings emphasize the urgent need to address nanomaterial contamination in aquatic food webs to protect ecosystem components and human consumers. Our study highlights the importance of developing effective mitigation strategies to preserve the integrity of aquatic ecosystems, ensure resource sustainability, and safeguard human well-being. In conclusion, our study provides crucial insights into the impact of nanomaterial pollution on aquatic biota. By recognizing the challenges posed by nanomaterial contamination and implementing targeted interventions, we can mitigate the adverse effects, preserving the integrity of aquatic ecosystems and safeguarding human health.
