RESUMO

Librarians are playing numerous roles within problem-based learning curricula. While many of these roles are described in the literature, there is no framework to describe and organize these roles. This paper proposes such a framework. It arranges librarian roles according to level of curricular involvement and includes the following levels: assistance at the reference desk, instruction at the reference desk, course-related instruction, resource management and utilization, consultation with faculty and students, and group facilitation.

RESUMO

A questionnaire survey was conducted by the Library Association Health Libraries Group in October-December 1996. Information practitioners in the health care sector were asked what they considered were the education and research needs of the profession, their opinion of Library and Information Sciences education, and their views on practitioner input to education and research. They were also asked whether they would be prepared to give talks to students and to offer student placements. The results show that there is still a considerable gulf between academics and practitioners, and that although practitioners are enthusiastic about getting more involved in liaison, they are constrained by lack of time and resources. Practical solutions need to be found to encourage greater understanding and closer working relationships, to achieve the benefits of academic-practitioner liaison.

RESUMO

The position of chief information officer (CIO) is gaining popularity, especially in the health care field. The results of an informal electronic and telephone survey indicate that few medical librarians have made a career move to CIO even though this might seem like a logical step. This paper examines the qualities required of an effective information management executive, the role CIOs play within organizations, and the career advancement strategies for librarians interested in becoming CIOs. Questionnaire responses are reported from three medical librarians who have made the transition to CIO-type positions, and a case study illustrates the responsibilities of CIOs in health care organizations.
