RESUMO

This (in vitro) investigation was conducted to evaluate PH value and antibacterial effect of Alkasite restorative materials against important oral pathogens Streptococcus mutans and lactobacillus plantarum. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Four groups were made of three different type ion releasing materials Cention N= group 1, Primer free Cention Forte=group 2, Primer applied Cention Forte=group 3 and Fuji IX= group 4. A total number of 72 discs in form samples (2 mm height and 5mm diameter) were constructed in polyethylene mold divided according to the evaluating parameters. 32 specimens for PH measurements (n=8) and 40 specimens were utilized for antibacterial effect (n=5) for each bacterial species. The antibacterial properties of groups were assessed by direct contact test. An adjusted diluted broth culture of each bacterium (Streptococcus mutans) and (Lactobacillus plantarum) were prepared. RESULTS: At all intervals of time both Cention N and Primer free Cention Forte has significantly higher PH value in comparison with Fuji IX. Primer applied Cention Forte. There was no significant difference between Cention N, Primer free Cention and Fuji IX in terms of their effect in reducing viable colony count in both bacterial species. CONCLUSION: Along period of (28day) Alkasite material groups (Cention N and Primer free Cention Forte) showed the ability to increase the storage solution PH value. Also, both groups have antibacterial effect against (Streptococcus mutans) and (Lactobacillus plantarum) by inhibiting their numbers. Applying Cention primer showed negative effect on both PH value and the antibacterial effect of the material.

Glass ionomer cements (GICs) are the common materials employed in pediatric dentistry because of their specific applications in class I restorations and atraumatic restoration treatments (ART) of deciduous teeth in populations at high risk of caries. Studies show a limited clinical durability of these materials. Attempts have thus been made to incorporate nanoparticles (NPs) into the glass ionomer for improving resistance and make it like the tooth structure. An in vitro experimental study was conducted using the required samples dimensions and prepared based on the test being carried out on the three groups with or without the modification of light-cured glass ionomer. Samples were grouped as follows: control group (G1_C), 2% silver phosphate/hydroxyapatite NPs group (G2_SPH), and 2% titanium dioxide NPs group (G3_TiO2). The physical tests regarding flexural strength (n = 10 per group), solubility (n = 10 per group), and radiopacity (n = 3 per group) were performed. The data were analyzed by Shapiro Wilks test, and one-way analysis of variance (one-way ANOVA), and multiple comparisons by post hoc Tukey's test. The p-value of < 0.05 was considered significant. No statistically significant difference was observed between the control group (G1_C) and (G2_SPH) (p = 0.704) in the flexural strength test, however differences were found between G2_SPH and G3_TiO2 groups, ANOVA (p = 0.006); post hoc Tukey's test (p = 0.014). Pertaining to the solubility, G2_SPH obtained the lowest among the three groups, ANOVA (p = 0.010); post hoc Tukey's test (p = 0.009). The three study groups obtained an adequate radiopacity of >1 mm Al, respectively. The resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) was further modified with 2% silver phosphate/hydroxyapatite NPs to improve the physical properties such as enhancing the solubility and sorption without compromising the flexural strength and radiopacity behavior of modified RMGIC. The incorporation of 2% titanium dioxide NPs did not improve the properties studied.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of erbium laser pretreatment on the bond strength of dentin and enamel,as well as microleakage at the edge of tooth defects repaired with computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-assisted manufacturing (CAM) glass-ceramic restorations for repairing dental defects. METHODS: A total of 62 fresh, nondecayed, nondiscoloration and noncracked wisdom teeth were collected from the Oral Surgery Clinic between January 2020 and January 2023. According to different pretreatment methods, they were randomly divided into two groups, erbium laser group and phosphoric acid group, with 31 teeth in each group. Each group was further divided into two subsets for bond strength testing (16 teeth) and microleakage testing (15 teeth).The shear bond strength between enamel and dentin of both groups was compared, as well as the degree and distribution of microleakage.Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS 17.0 software package. RESULTS: The shear bond strength between enamel and dentin of the erbium laser group was significantly higher than that of the phosphoric acid group (P<0.05); the degree and distribution of microleakage at the lateral walls and gumline of the erbium laser group were significantly lower than those of the phosphoric acid group (P<0.05). The scores of microleakage at the lateral walls of the erbium laser group mainly concentrated in grade 1 and 2, whereas those of the phosphoric acid group mainly concentrated in grade 2. There was significant difference in the distribution of lateral wall microleakage scores between the two groups (P<0.05). The scores of microleakage at the gumline of the erbium laser group mainly concentrated in grade 1 and 2, whereas those of the phosphoric acid group mainly concentrated in grade 2 and 3. There was significant difference in the distribution of gumline microleakage scores between the two groups (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Erbium laser pretreatment can improve bonding strength between glass ionomer cement and dentin and enamel, reduce microleakage at the edge of CAD/CAM glass ionomer cement restorations, and enhance marginal fit.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of decontamination procedures on the microshear bond strength (µSBS) of blood-contaminated resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) bonded to resin composite (RC). METHODS: Eighty RMGIC disc specimens were allocated into 5 groups (n=16). All groups except Group 2 were contaminated with blood. Group 1 had no decontamination procedure, Group 3 was decontaminated by rinsing, Group 4 was decontaminated by 34% phosphoric acid etching, and Group 5 was decontaminated by 5% sodium hypochlorite application. RMGIC specimens were subsequently bonded with RC using a universal adhesive in self-etch mode. µSBS tests were conducted using a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. Failure mode analysis was conducted on RMGIC fracture surfaces under a scanning electron microscope. RESULTS: µSBS results indicated that Group 4 had the highest mean µSBS value of 6.22 ± 2.14 MPa, while Group 1 had the lowest mean µSBS value of 3.53 ±1.67 MPa. Significant differences were observed in the µSBS of Group 2 with no contamination (p=0.023) and Group 4 with decontamination by phosphoric acid-etching (p=0.003) when compared to Group 1 with blood contamination. No statistically significant differences (p>0.05) were observed between all other groups' µSBS. For all groups, the predominant mode of failure was adhesive failure between the RMGIC-RC interface, with a few mixed failures in RMGIC for Groups 2-5. CONCLUSIONS: Blood contamination before adhesive application significantly reduced the µSBS between RMGIC and RC. Phosphoric acid etching was the most effective blood decontamination procedure to improve the µSBS.

Background: Endodontic treatment is the most common method for resolving pulpal and periapical pathology. However, various studies have reported that almost 11%-13% of all teeth that undergo extraction after endodontic treatment show the presence of cracks, craze lines, and vertical root fractures. Teeth with inadequate post endodontic restoration are more prone to fracture and coronal leakage, resulting in the diffusion of oral fluids, bacteria, bacterial products, and possibly root canal treatment failure. Furthermore, studies have advocated the use of endodontically treated teeth with restorative materials that have a similar or higher elastic modulus than the tooth for providing stiffness against forces that cause root fracture. Intraorifice barriers made of restorative materials that can bond to radicular dentin could thus be used to reinforce the radicular dentin while also preventing coronal microleakage. Although the sealing ability of intraorifice barriers has been widely compared in the literature, there have been few studies on the strengthening effect of the materials used in the study as intraorifice barriers when placed into the root canal. As a result, the current in vitro study aims to assess the effect of various materials as intraorifice barriers (Cention N, Resin modified glass ionomer cement, and short fiber reinforced flowable composite) on the force required fracture teeth after root canal treatment. Methods: This in vitro study will be done on extracted human mandibular premolars with single root canal where after doing root canal treatment 2-3 mm obturating material would be replaced by intra orifice barriers (Cention N, resin modified glass ionomer cement [RMGIC], and short fiber reinforced flowable composite). The force required to fracture teeth will be calculated using universal testing machine.

AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of proanthocyanidin and C. sinensis-polyphenols on microtensile bonding properties of prepared teeth with resin-modified glass ionomer cement (GIC). SETTING AND DESIGN: This was an in vitro study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-eight maxillary premolars were selected and mounted into auto-polymerizing acrylic resin blocks. The samples were prepared and metal crowns were fabricated. The samples were randomly divided into three groups. Samples under Group 1 were not treated with any of the extracts and followed conventional bonding protocol. Samples under Group 2 and Group 3 were treated with proanthocyanidin and C. sinensis-polyphenols, respectively. After dentin treatment, these samples were luted to metal crowns using resin-modified GIC. Universal testing machine was used to measure the load at which the crowns were debonded and microtensile bond strength in MPa was calculated. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: The results were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey HSD. RESULTS: Samples treated with C. sinensis polyphenols (Group 3) had maximum bond strength followed by Group 2, where the samples were treated with proanthocyanidin. CONCLUSION: C. sinensis polyphenols due to their anti-proteolytic and antioxidant properties showed improved bond strength compared to proanthocyanidin, a cross-linking agent, followed by conventional bonding protocol.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the fluoride and silver ion release of glass ionomer cement (GIC) restorations, including conventional GIC (CGIC) and resin-modified GIC (RMGIC) restorations, with 38 % silver diamine fluoride (SDF) solution dentin pretreatment. METHODS: Eighty dentin blocks were allocated into 4 groups and restored with SDF+CGIC, CGIC, SDF+RMGIC and RMGIC, respectively. Each block was stored in deionized water at 37 °C for 2 years. Fluoride and silver ion concentration in storage solution was measured using ion-selective electrode and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry for up to 2 years. The cross-sectional surfaces of restored dentin blocks were assessed by X-Ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) after 1 week and 2 years, respectively. RESULTS: The mean ± standard deviation (SD) of accumulative fluoride releasing in SDF+CGIC, CGIC, SDF+RMGIC and RMGIC for 2 years were 0.13±0.005 mg, 0.09±0.006 mg, 0.15±0.008 mg and 0.05±0.003 mg, respectively (Groups SDF+RMGIC > SDF+CGIC > CGIC >RMGIC, p < 0.05). The mean ± SD of accumulative silver releasing in SDF+CGIC, CGIC, SDF+RMGIC and RMGIC for 2 years were 0.03±0.009 mg, 0.00±0.00 mg, 0.01±0.003 mg, and 0.00±0.00 mg, respectively (Groups SDF+CGIC > SDF+RMGIC > CGIC&RMGIC, p < 0.05). Groups SDF+CGIC and SDF+RMGIC showed sustainably higher fluoride and silver releasing compared to Groups CGIC and RMGIC (p < 0.05). XRD analysis indicated the fluorapatite and silver chloride were observed only in Groups SDF+CGIC and SDF+RMGIC, but not in Groups CGIC and RMGIC. SEM images of the cross-sectional view of the dentin blocks showed silver crystals within dentinal tubules 1 week and 2-year in Groups with SDF pretreatment. CONCLUSION: The 38 % SDF dentin pretreatment sustainably increased the fluoride and silver release of GIC and RMGIC restorations for up to 2 years.

AIM: The aim of the study was to compare and evaluate the microleakage of fiber-reinforced glass ionomer cement (GIC) and conventional glass ionomer cement restorations immersed in three different beverages. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 96 human exfoliating deciduous molars were selected which were cleaned and disinfected. Standardized Class V cavity preparations were done and buccal surface were restored with experimental fiber-reinforced glass ionomer cement (Exp-FRGIC), lingual surface were restored with Type II conventional GIC. They were divided into four groups according to the test beverage. The samples were subjected to various immersion regimes and evaluated for microleakage under stereomicroscope. RESULTS: Intragroup comparison for (Exp-FRGIC) showed significant microleakage when immersed in fresh fruit juice at high immersion whereas intragroup comparison in conventional GIC, showed highest microleakage with soft drink. Intergroup comparison of (Exp-FRGIC) in high immersion regime, showed more microleakage with specimen immersed in soft drink followed by fresh fruit juice. CONCLUSION: It can thus be concluded that the three beverages used in the study affected the microleakage of both restorative materials significantly. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Increasing usage of fruit juices in the pediatric diet has a definite impact on the progression of caries and it directly or indirectly affects the quality of restorations placed in the oral cavity. BACKGROUND: Despite the superiority of glass-ionomer cements (GICs) over composites in treating white spot lesions (WSLs), there is still a concern about their preventive and antibacterial properties. Efforts have been made to improve the strength of their bond to demineralized enamel, fluoride release and antibacterial properties by adding nanoparticles of chitosan, which seems to be a promising method. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to assess the antibacterial effect, the microshear bond strength (µSBS) to enamel at the WSL area, and the fluoride and nano-chitosan release after modifying the polyacrylic acid liquid phase of a traditional GIC with different nano-chitosan volumes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 120 samples were prepared, and then divided into 4 groups (n = 30): G1 - non-modified GIC, which served as a control group, while G2, G3 and G4 were modified with different nano-chitosan volumes (50%, 100% and 150%, respectively). Microshear bond strength was assessed using a universal testing machine (UTM) after storage in distilled water for 24 h. Fluoride and nanochitosan release was measured with the use of spectrophotometers at different time points (initially, and at 1 h, 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, and 6 weeks) after storage in distilled water. The antibacterial effect against the Streptococcus aureus strain was assessed with the agar diffusion test. The data was statistically analyzed. RESULTS: After 24-hour storage, G2 recorded a slight, yet non-significant, increase in the µSBS values (4.1 ±0.94 MPa) as compared to G1 (3.9 ±1.30 MPa). With regard to fluoride release, the amount recorded for G1 was significantly greater at the end of the 24-hour storage period (0.70 ±0.30 µmf/cm2) than modified nano-chitosan GIC groups; G1 was followed by G4 (0.54 ±0.34 µmf/cm2). The highest amount of nano-chitosan release after 24-hour storage was noted for G3 (0.85 ±0.00 µmf/cm2). The highest inhibition zone value was recorded for G2. CONCLUSIONS: Glass-ionomer cement modified with 50% nano-chitosan was shown to positively affect µSBS and the antibacterial effect, while modification with 150% nano-chitosan significantly increased fluoride release.

RESUMO

Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) are treatment modalities that are minimally invasive and used for the prevention and control of dental caries. The amalgamation of these two techniques has led to the development of silver modified atraumatic restorative treatment (SMART). In this approach the carious lesion is restored with glass-ionomer cement (GIC) after SDF application. SMART effectively arrests caries without removing additional tooth structure, making it a promising option for caries management in children who lack cooperative ability.This article reviews the literature on SMART, the evidence regarding its applications in dental practice, its advantages, drawbacks, the scope for research, and clinical use.

BACKGROUND: Glass ionomers may be a good alternative to composite resin restorations in special needs patients with challenging behaviours. The present study was carried out to evaluate the restorative efficacy of glass ionomer in the occlusal cavities of permanent molars among patients with special needs after one year of follow-up. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A randomized split-mouth study was made of a cohort of patients with special needs. First and second permanent molars with occlusal caries were treated with glass ionomer, silver amalgam and composite resin. Assessments were made at 3, 6 and 12 months, using a scale based on the original code of Ryge and the USPHS criteria. RESULTS: A total of 34 patients and 102 restorations comprised the study sample. The survival rate of both the glass ionomer and silver amalgam was 100%, versus 97.1% in the case of composite resin. The glass ionomer afforded good marginal adaptation and stable color, with no fractures or secondary caries. CONCLUSIONS: The glass ionomer remained successfully for one year in the occlusal cavities of the permanent molars, with the same survival rate as silver amalgam, and better survival than composite resin, in the patients with special needs.

This study investigated the antimicrobial activity of surface pre-reacted glass ionomer eluate (S-PRG) against oral microcosm biofilms collected from the oral cavity of patients. Dental biofilm samples were collected from three volunteers to form microcosm biofilms in vitro. Initially, screening tests were carried out to determine the biofilm treatment conditions with S-PRG eluate. The effects of a daily treatment for 5 min using three microcosm biofilms from different patients was then evaluated. For this, biofilms were formed on tooth enamel specimens for 120 h. Biofilms treated with 100% S-PRG for 5 min per day for 5 days showed a reduction in the number of total microorganisms, streptococci and mutans streptococci. SEM images confirmed a reduction in the biofilm after treatment. Furthermore, S-PRG also reduced lactic acid production. It was concluded that S-PRG eluate reduced the microbial load and lactic acid production in oral microcosm biofilms, reinforcing its promising use as a mouthwash agent.

Laboratory evidence has shown that 45S5 bioglass can help in dental remineralization, so its incorporation into resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) has been studied. This randomized clinical trial aimed to determine the efficacy of RMGIC enriched with 10% 45S5 bioglass (RMGIC/45S5) in preventing the progression of moderate caries lesions. Sixty-six permanent molars with moderate caries lesions, were randomly sealed with RMGIC or RMGIC/45S5. After 1, 3-6 months, patients' oral health, material behavior, and caries evolution were evaluated. Chi-square and Fisher's exact test was employed. After one month, the RMGIC showed higher total retention and better clinical performance compared to RMGIC/45S5, both showed a predominance of sealed teeth or without caries progression. After 6 months, no materials retention, quality and caries progression difference was observed for both materials. Short-term clinical follow-up reveals worse retention and quality of RMGIC/45S5, only after 6 months no clinical/microscopic differences are observed between the materials.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess antimicrobial efficacy, cytotoxicity, and cytokine release (IL-1b, IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α) from human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) of chitosan (CH) and hydroxyapatite (HAp)-modified glass ionomer cements (GIC). METHODS: GICs with varied CH and HAp concentrations (0 %, 0.16 %, 2 %, 5 %, 10 %) were tested against S. mutans for 24 h or 7 days. Antimicrobial activity was measured using an MTT test. Cytotoxicity evaluation followed for optimal concentrations, analyzing mitochondrial activity and apoptosis in hDPSCs. Cytokine release was assessed with MAGPIX. Antimicrobial analysis used Shapiro-Wilk, Kruskal-Wallis, and Dunnett tests. Two-way ANOVA, Tukey, and Dunnett tests were applied for hDP metabolism and cytokine release. RESULTS: CH 2 % and HAp 5 % significantly enhanced GIC antimicrobial activity, especially after seven days. In immediate analysis, all materials showed reduced mitochondrial activity compared to the control. After 24 h, CH demonstrated mitochondrial metabolism similar to the control. All groups exhibited mild cytotoxicity (∼30 % cell death). Only IL-6 was influenced, with reduced release in experimental groups. SIGNIFICANCE: CH 2 % and HAp 5 % were most effective for antibacterial effects. GIC-CH 2 % emerged as the most promising formula, displaying significant antibacterial effects with reduced hDPSC toxicity.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the microleakage of atraumatic glass ionomer restorations with and without silver diammine fluoride (SDF) application. Restorations with SDF are termed silver-modified atraumatic restorations (SMART). Methods: Sixty carious extracted permanent teeth were randomly allocated to two SMART groups and two control groups (n equals 15 per group) for a total of four groups. After selective caries removal, test specimens were treated with 38 percent SDF and polyacrylic acid conditioner was applied and rinsed; teeth were restored with Fuji IX GP® glass ionomer (n equals 15) or with SMART Advantage™ glass ionomer (SAGI; n equals 15). For control groups, specimens were restored with their respective GI material after selective caries removal, both without SDF. Restored teeth were placed in Dulbecco's Phosphate-Buffered Saline solution at 37 degrees Celsius for 24 hours. Teeth were thermocycled between five and 55 degrees Celsius for 1,000 cycles, stained with two percent basic fuchsin, sectioned, and visually inspected for microleakage utilizing stereomicroscopy on a four-point scale. Data were statistically analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis of variance on ranks using Dunn's method (P<0.05). Results: Microleakage between the two SMART restoration groups was insignificant. SAGI alone demonstrated significantly more microleakage than all other groups. There was no statistical significance between the Fuji IX GP® control group and the two SMART restoration groups. Conclusions: This in vitro study indicated that silver diammine fluoride placed before glass ionomer restoration does not increase microleakage. Polyacrylic acid may be used after SDF placement without increasing microleakage.

Purpose: The purposes of this study were to evaluate the effect of silver diammine fluoride (SDF) on the shear bond strength (SBS) of pink opaquer (PO) compared to resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI) and conventional composite (COMP) on demineralized dentin, and also to investigate the mode of failure (MOF). Methods: Sixty extracted third molars were prepared, demineralized for 14 days, and divided into four groups: (1) COMP; (2) SDF+PO; (3) SDF+RMGI; and (4) SDF+COMP (restoration size: two by two mm). SBS, MOF, modified adhesive remnant index (MARI), and remnant adhesive volume (RAV) were evaluated using an Instron® machine, light microscopy, 3D digital scanner ( 3Shape©), and GeoMagic Wrap© software. Results: There was no significant difference in SBS (MPa) among the COMP mean??standard deviation (2.5±1.59), SDF+COMP (2.28±1.05), SDF+PO (3.31±2.63), and SDF+RMGI groups (3.74±2.34). There was no significant difference in MOF and MARI among the four groups (P>0.05). There was no significant difference in RAV (mm3) among the COMP (0.5±0.33), SDF+COMP (0.39±0.44), SDF+PO (0.42±0.38), and SDF+RMGI groups (0.42±0.38; P>0.05). A significant correlation existed between MOF and RAV (R equals 0.721; P<0.001). MOF, MARI, and RAV did not show any correlations with SBS (P>0.05). Conclusions: Silver diammine fluoride does not affect shear bond strength between carious dentinal surface and tooth color restorative materials. The amount of material left on the interface is not related to the amount of shear force needed to break the restoration.

To evaluate the effect of acidic challenge on erosion depth and topographic characteristics of different materials used as occlusal sealants. Two hundred specimens of five sealant materials (Fuji IX, Ketac Molar, Fuji II, Equia and Clinpro) and forty bovine teeth enamel samples (control) were prepared and exposed to acidic challenge. The specimens were immersed in four different solutions (orange juice, coke drink, citric acid or distilled water) under mildly shaken conditions for 3 days. The erosion depth profiles were measured using a profilometer and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Two-way ANOVA with Tukey post-hoc test was performed to evaluate the interactions. Sealant material and acidic challenge had significant effects on erosion depth. Among the materials, Fuji II presented the highest mean of erosion depth after immersion in orange juice, coke drink, and citric acid. All materials groups presented higher erosion depth values after immersion in the citric acid solution, except Clinpro. Bovine enamel presented higher erosion depth values compared to all materials when submitted to erosive challenge. Sealant materials submitted to the acidic challenge presented different degrees of erosion and topographic modification; however, they are less susceptible to erosion than bovine teeth enamel.

BACKGROUND: The survival of ART restorations can be influenced by the choice of the restorative material. The aim of this randomized non-inferiority controlled trial was to compare the 2-year survival rate and cost analysis of two encapsulated glass ionomer cements (GIC) as occlusoproximal restorative materials in primary molars. METHODS: Children from public schools in Tietê (Brazil), aged 4-8 years with occlusoproximal dentine carious lesions in primary molars were selected and randomly assigned to receive either Equia Forte (EF) or Riva Self Cure (RSC) as restorative materials. Treatment was carried out by two trained final-year dental students in schools following ART premises. Restorations were assessed by a trained and calibrated examiner after 2, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months. The primary outcome was restoration survival after 2 years, analyzed using Kaplan-Meier survival and Cox regression analysis (α = 5%). Professional and materials costs for each group were collected in Brazilian Reais (R$) and converted into US dollars (US$) and analyzed using Monte-Carlo simulation. RESULTS: A total of 152 children (76 per group) were included in the study, and 121 (79%) were evaluated after 2 years. The overall 2-year restoration survival rate was 39% (EF = 45%; RSC = 32%) with no difference between the groups. The baseline and 2-year total cost of restorations using RSC was lower when compared to EF (incremental cost: US$ 6.18). CONCLUSION: After two years of follow-up, Riva Self Cure shows comparable restoration survival rates to Equia Forte, being more cost-effective in the Brazilian perspective. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This randomized clinical trial was registered on ClinicalTrials.Gov - NCT02730000.

Coloured compounds (anthocyanins) in açaí can stain resin-modified glass-ionomer cement (RMGIC) due to its low staining resistance. AIM: The aim of this study was to assess whether açaí compromises the surface colour and roughness of RMGIC in vitro. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Disc-shaped specimens (2 mm thick, 8 mm in diameter) of Vitremer™ (3M ESPE, St Paul, MN, USA) were prepared according to the manufacturer 's instructions. The mixture was inserted into a silicone mouldplaced between two mylar strips, and light cured. Specimens were randomly divided into three groups (n=25) according to the solutions to be used for chemical degradation: artificial saliva (control), açaí sorbet and açaí juice. A spectrophotometer CM-2600d/2500d (Konica Minolta, Tokyo, Japan) was used to analyse the colour (CIELa*b* scale). Surface roughness (Ra, mm) was measuredusing theprofilometer Surfcorder SE 1700 (Kosaka Corp, Tokyo, Japan). The specimens were subjected to three daily soaks (6 ml, 15 minutes) for 14 days at 37°C. They were washed in distilled water and placed in fresh saliva (30 minutes in the interval). After the third soak in a day, they were stored in fresh saliva overnight. Outcomes were analysed at baseline (L*, a*, b*, Ra) and after degradation (L'*, a'*, b'*, Ra'). RESULTS: The pH values of saliva, sorbet, and juice were 7.0, 3.8, and 4.9, respectively. ΔE* values were 6.6 for saliva, 6.9 for sorbet and 7.8 for juice. There was a significant ΔE* difference between saliva (p=0.005) and juice (p=0.002), and between juice and sorbet (p=0.019), but none between saliva and sorbet (p=0.401). There was no significant Δb* difference between the solutions. No difference between juice and sorbet was observed for Δa*, but they were significantly different from saliva (p<0.001). Brightness (L*) changed significantly. Juice showed the highest ΔE* (7.8) and ΔL* (7.7). No significant change was observed for roughness and there was no difference between the solutions for ARa. CONCLUSIONS: Açaí and saliva led to unacceptable staining, but no significant roughness changes in the resin-modified glass-ionomer cement.


As antocianinas presentes no açaí podem manchar o cimento de ionomero de vidro modificado por resina (CIVMR) devido a baixa resistencia ao manchamento do material. OBJETIVO: O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar se o açaí compromete a cor e a rugosidade de superficie de um CIVMR in vitro. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Amostras (2 mm de espessura, 8 mm de diámetro) de Vitremer™ (3M ESPE, St Paul, MN, USA) foram preparadas de acordo com as instrugoes do fabricante. O materialfoi espatulado, inserido em um molde de silicone colocado entre duas tiras de poliestireno e fotopolimerizado. Após, as amostras foram randomizadas e alocadas em tres grupos (n=25) de acordo com as solugoes usadas para a degradagao química: saliva artificial (controle) e sorbet de açaí e suco de açaí. Utilizou-se o espectrofotometro CM-2600d/2500d (Konica Minolta, Tokyo, Japan) para a análise da cor (escala CIELa*b*) e o rugosímetro Surfcorder SE 1700 (Kosaka Corp, Tokyo, Japan) para a rugosidade de superficie (Ra, mm). As amostras foram submetidas a tres imersoes diárias (6 ml, 15 minutos) em cada solugao por 14 dias a 37°C, tendo sido lavadas em água destilada e mantidas em saliva fresca (30 minutos) nos intervalos. Após a terceira imersao no dia, as amostras foram mantidas em saliva renovada até o dia seguinte. As variáveis foram analisadas antes (L*, a*, b*, Ra) e depois da degradagao química (L'*, a'*, b'*, Ra'). RESULTADOS: Os valores de pH da saliva, sorbet e suco foram, respectivamente 7,0, 3,8 e 4,9. Houve diferenga significante para ΔE* entre saliva (p=0.005) e suco (p=0.002) e entre suco e sorbet (p=0.019), mas nao entre saliva e sorbet (p=0.401). Nao foi observada diferenga significante para Δb* entre as solugoes. Nao houve diferenga significante para Δa* entre suco e sorbet, mas eles foram significativamente diferentes da saliva (p<0.001). A luminosidade (L*) mostrou alteragao significante. O suco mostrou os maiores valores de ΔE* (7,8) e ΔL* (7,7)". Nao houve mudanga significante para a rugosidade e nao foi observada diferenga significante entre as solugoes para ARa (p>0.05). CONCLUSÃO: O açaí e a saliva causaram manchamento inaceitável do glaze do CIVMR e insignificante alteragao da rugosidade.

BACKGROUND: In dentistry, glass-ionomer cements (GICs) are extensively used for a range of applications. The unique properties of GIC include fluoride ion release and recharge, chemical bonding to the tooth's hard tissues, biocompatibility, a thermal expansion coefficient like that of enamel and dentin, and acceptable aesthetics. Their high solubility and poor mechanical qualities are among their limitations. E-glass fibers are generally utilized to reinforce the polymer matrix and are identified by their higher silica content. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the study was to assess the impact of adding (10 wt% and 20 wt%) silane-treated E-glass fibers to traditional GIC on its mechanical properties (compressive strength, flexural strength, and surface hardness) and solubility. METHODS: The characterization of the E-glass fiber fillers was achieved by XRF, SEM, and PSD. The specimens were prepared by adding the E-glass fiber fillers to the traditional GIC at 10% and 20% by weight, forming two innovative groups, and compared with the unmodified GIC (control group). The physical properties (film thickness and initial setting time) were examined to confirm operability after mixing. The evaluation of the reinforced GIC was performed by assessing the compressive strength, flexural strength, hardness, and solubility (n = 10 specimens per test). A one-way ANOVA and Tukey tests were performed for statistical analysis (p ≤ 0.05). RESULTS: The traditional GIC showed the least compressive strength, flexural strength, hardness, and highest solubility. While the GIC reinforced with 20 wt% E-glass fibers showed the highest compressive strength, flexural strength, hardness, and least solubility. Meanwhile, GIC reinforced with 10 wt% showed intermediate results (P ≤ 0.05). CONCLUSION: Using 20 wt% E-glass fiber as a filler with the traditional GIC provides a strengthening effect and reduced solubility.
