Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is prevalent in exclusively breastfed (EBF) Thai infants. However, in Thailand, iron supplementation guidelines for EBF infants are not available. This prospective open-label study aimed to estimate the prevalence of IDA in 9-month-old EBF infants after receiving iron supplementation from 4 months of age until they consumed adequate iron-rich food. Forty-seven healthy, 4-month-old EBF infants were prescribed 1 mg/kg/day ferrous sulfate. Their complementary food records from 6 to 9 months were calculated for daily iron intake. Complete blood count and iron study were performed at 9 months of age. The results showed that the prevalence of IDA at 9 months was 6.4%. An employed caregiver and the male sex of the baby were significantly associated with iron deficiency. The food record revealed that the median daily iron intake was less than the Thai dietary reference intake recommendation. In summary, the prevalence of IDA in infants with 9 months of exclusive breastfeeding who received iron supplementation was lower than the background rate (25.7%) when iron was not prescribed. Most infants did not have adequate iron in complementary foods. Iron supplementation should be prescribed routinely during 4-9 months of age in healthy Thai EBF infants.

This study constructed an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor for ultrasensitive detection of Pb2+ in a ternary system by employing DNAzyme. The ternary system is composed of a potassium-neutralized perylene derivative (K4PTC) as the ECL emitter, K2S2O8 as the coreactant, and neodymium metal-organic frameworks (Nd-MOFs) as the coreaction accelerators. Nd-MOFs immobilize DNAzymes and enhance the luminescence intensity of the K4PTC/K2S2O8 system. As part of this system, K4PTC enhances the ECL signal in solution and supports Pb2+ detection. The sequence of ferrocene (Fc)-linked DNA (DNA-Fc) is catalytically cleaved by DNAzymes in the presence of Pb2+. This causes the removal of DNA1-Fc from the electrode surface to recover the ECL signal. As a result, the as-prepared ECL biosensor can quantify Pb2+ with a detection limit (LOD) of 4.1 fM in the range of 1 µM to 10 fM. The ECL biosensor displays high specificity, good stability, excellent reproducibility, and desirable practicality for Pb2+ detection in tap water. Moreover, by simply changing the sequence of the DNAzyme, new biosensors can be designed for ultrasensitive detection of different heavy metal ions, offering an excellent approach for monitoring water quality safety.

Goethite often harbors impurities, such as phosphorus (P) and aluminum (Al), which are incorporated into its structure through direct substitution or coprecipitation with nanocrystalline phases. Understanding the processes that drive the release of P and Al from goethite is of paramount importance for the iron ore industry and for managing nutrient and pollutant behavior in the environment. This study investigates the impact of Fe(II)-catalyzed recrystallization on the release of P and Al from goethite. We evaluated the solubility and extractability of P and Al in suspensions of Al- and P-coprecipitated goethite, treated with 57Fe-enriched Fe(II)aq under oxygen-free conditions for 30 days at neutral pH and room temperatures. The addition of Fe(II)aq induced the recrystallization of goethite dominant initial synthetic phases (i.e., low P- and Al-containing phases) and the transformation of higher P- and/or Al-bearing starting material that was actually a mixture of goethite and minor amounts of lepidocrocite and feroxyhyte. Our results reveal that Fe(II)-catalyzed mineral and structural evolution led to the repartitioning of P and, to a lesser extent, Al throughout the crystal structure, mineral surface, and aqueous solution. Following a 30 day reaction with Fe(II)aq, we extracted approximately 80, 68.8, 73.9, and 83.2% of P from P-only, low, medium, and high P + Al goethite, respectively. Additionally, we observed total Al removals of approximately 17, 27, and 25% from low, medium, and high P + Al goethite, respectively. The results demonstrate that treating both P-only and P + Al goethite with Fe(II) at room temperature, followed by a 24 h extraction using 1 M NaOH, significantly enhances the overall extractability of P and Al, including both aqueous and surface-adsorbed fractions, compared to Fe(II)-free controls. These findings advance our understanding of the recrystallization process and impurity substitution in goethite, offering promising avenues for developing new environmentally friendly methods to extract P and other impurities from goethitic iron ores at lower temperatures.

It has been known since the 1990s that the introduction of a ferrocenyl-type substituent into compounds with proven biological activity can improve their properties. More recently, it was also shown that a carbon bridge connecting the two cyclopentadienyl rings in ferrocene derivatives could enhance the biological properties of the new compounds compared to those without them. However, the synthesis of ferrocenes with this additional linker, known as ansa-ferrocenes, is more difficult due to advanced synthetic protocols and the phenomenon of planar chirality in ring-substituted compounds. As a result, research into the formation of hybrids, conjugates and other ansa-ferrocene derivatives has not been widely conducted. This review discusses the potential biological properties of these units, covering scientific articles published between 1980 and 2024.

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency in the world, but iron supplementation can increase risk of opportunistic infections, especially in children living with HIV. We aimed to assess the effect of supplemental iron on haemoglobin concentration in children living with HIV and mild-to-moderate anaemia in Uganda. METHODS: We did a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial of iron supplementation in children aged 6 months to 12 years living with HIV at two sites (ie, Kampala and Fort Portal, Uganda). Inclusion criteria were confirmed diagnosis of HIV and stable treatment with antiretroviral therapy for at least 6 months. Exclusion criteria were already taking iron supplementation, acute illness, current opportunistic infection, fever, known sickle cell disease, severe undernutrition, or any chronic illness requiring medical attention. Children were randomly assigned (1:1) via simple randomisation to an 84-day course of either ferrous sulphate or identical placebo tablets once per day. Randomisation codes were computer-generated and stratified by age (ie, 6-23 months or 24 months and older) by the Toronto Institute of Pharmaceutical Technology, the tablet manufacturer. Participants and all individuals giving the interventions, assessing outcomes, and analysing data were masked to group assignment. Children aged 6-23 months received tablets of 12·5 mg ferrous sulphate or identical placebo; children aged 24 months or older received tablets of 30·0 mg ferrous sulphate or identical placebo. Caregivers were instructed to give the supplement after a meal, preferably after an evening meal. The primary outcome was mean haemoglobin concentration at day 84. All analyses were intention to treat. This trial is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT03596996). FINDINGS: Between May 5, 2018, and Nov 6, 2019, 973 children living with HIV were screened, of whom 200 (20%) met all inclusion criteria and were enrolled. 102 (51%) were randomly assigned to receive iron and 98 (49%) to receive placebo. In the iron group, 57 (56%) of 102 children were male and 45 (44%) were female. In the placebo group, 44 (45%) of 98 children were male and 54 (55%) were female. Iron supplementation was associated with improvement in haemoglobin in unadjusted analysis (p=0·029), but not adjusted analysis (p=0·10), and with improvement in ferritin and hepcidin in both adjusted (p=0·0046; p=0·0079) and unadjusted (p<0·0001; p<0·0001) analyses at day 84. There were four hospital admissions, all for children in the iron group; none were fatal: two children were admitted to hospital with pneumonia, one with severe malaria, and one with hepatitis. Frequency of admissions was not significantly different between groups (p=0·12). INTERPRETATION: Iron could have haematological benefit and improve iron status in children living with HIV in Uganda. Future studies powered for morbidity outcomes with longer follow-up are needed, as are those that evaluate the effects of iron supplementation on neurocognitive outcomes. Salt stress is becoming a major issue for the world's environment and agriculture economy. Different iron [Fe] sources can give an environmentally friendly alternative for salt-affected soil remediation. In this study the effects of Iron sulfate on Luffa cylindrica (Sponge gourd) cultivated in normal and saline water irrigated soil were examined. When FeSO4 (0.01, 0.025, 0.05, 0.1 ppm) were applied to salt affected soil, the length, fresh and dry biomass of sponge gourd plant roots and shoots inclined by an average of 33, 28, 11, 21, 18 and 22%, respectively. In plants irrigated with saline water, leaf count was raised successively (23-115%) with increasing concentration of FeSO4 (0.025-0.1 ppm) compared to stress only plants. The use of FeSO4 boosted sponge gourd growth characteristics in both normal and salt-affected soils compared to respective controls. The application of Iron sulfate under salt stress boosted photosynthetic indices such as chlorophyll a (22%), chlorophyll b (34%), carotenoids (16%), and total chlorophyll levels (22%). Iron sulfate application also exhibited incline in primary (total free amino acids, 50%; total soluble proteins, 46%) and secondary (total phenolics, 9%; flavonoid content, 51%) metabolites in salt-affected soils. Oxidative enzymatic activities such as catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and DPPH scavenging activity (36%) were also increased by foliar spray of FeSO4 in control and salt stressed L. cylindrica plants. FeSO4 had a considerable impact on the growth and development of Luffa cylindrica in normal and salt-affected soils. It is concluded that FeSO4 application can effectively remediate salt affected soil and improve the production of crop plants.

The toxicological hazard of iron-containing products is a public health concern that inspires research in identifying and developing readily available, inexpensive antidotes. Natural products, like plant-sourced antioxidants, can be of great value in this regard. Hesperetin a flavonoid abundantly present in citrus fruits is known to possess a diverse pharmacological and antioxidant attribute. The present study investigated the alleviation of detrimental effects of ferrous sulphate (FeSO4) by hesperetin in Drosophila melanogaster. Flies were exposed to FeSO4 (10 µM) alone or supplemented with hesperetin (50 or 100 µM) via diet for 7 consecutive days. Antioxidant enzyme activities, non-enzymatic antioxidant levels, acetylcholinesterase activity and oxidative stress markers were then measured. Hesperetin supplementation significantly (p < 0.05) attenuated FeSO4-induced oxidative stress by enhancement of enzymic antioxidants (catalase and glutathione-S-transferases) activities, preservation of non-enzymic antioxidants (total thiols and non-protein thiols), and reduction of other markers of oxidative stress (hydrogen peroxide, protein carbonyl and lipid peroxidation) in D. melanogaster. In addition, hesperetin supplementation decreased nitric oxide levels and enhanced acetylcholinesterase activity. Furthermore, hesperetin supplementation improved FeSO4-induced locomotor deficit, while there was no significant difference in cell viability (mitochondrial metabolic rate) in the treatment groups. This study suggests that hesperetin might be a promising functional agent in preventing iron toxicity and similar metal-induced impairments.

We introduce a novel dual redox mediator synthesized by covalently linking ferrocene dicarboxylic acid (FcDA) and thionine (TH) onto a pre-treated glassy carbon electrode. This unique structure significantly enhances the electro-oxidation of dopamine (DA) and the reduction of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), offering a sensitive detection method for both analytes. The electrode exhibits exceptional sensitivity, selectivity, and stability, demonstrating potential for practical applications in biosensing. It facilitates rapid electron transfer between the analyte and the electrode surface, detecting H2O2 concentrations ranging from 1.5 to 60 µM with a limit of detection (LoD) of 0.49 µM and DA concentrations from 0.3 to 230 µM with an LoD of 0.07 µM. The electrode's performance was validated through real-sample analyses, yielding satisfactory results.

Exploring the different spin states of central metals in the complex to regulate the anti-tumor activity of cancer cells is of great significance in drug design and clinical use. However, it is a challenge to build a strong coupling between spin states and anti-tumor activities in one system. Herein, we present two complexes {FeII2L2[PdII(CN)4]2}·2H2O (L = Bztpen (1), Bztppn (2); Bztpen = N-benzyl-N,N',N'-tris(2-pyridylmethyl)ethylenediamine, Bztppn = N-benzyl-N,N',N'-tris(2-pyridylmethyl)propylenediamine) showing different cytotoxic activities actuated by fine-tuning the structure with different spin states of Fe(II). Magnetic susceptibility measurements and X-ray diffraction revealed that the Fe(II) ion in complexes 1 and 2 remains in the LS and HS state, respectively, at room temperature. Cytotoxicity tests indicate that complex 1 is more biologically effective than complex 2. In complex 2, however, the high-spin Fe(II) played a key role in regulating its in vitro antitumor effects and seems to be associated with ROS-mediated apoptosis. These findings offer a new avenue for developing anti-cancer drugs by designing complexes with different spin states.

In recent times, exploring the protective potential of medicinal plants has attracted increasing attention. To fight reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are key players in hepatic, cerebral and renal diseases, scientists have directed their efforts towards identifying novel compounds with antioxidant effects. Due to its unique composition, significant attention has been given to Cactus Seed Oil (CSO). Iron, as a metal, can be a potent generator of reactive oxygen species, especially hydroxyl radicals, via the Fenton and Haber-Weiss reactions. Here, we employed ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) to induce oxidative stress and DNA damage in mice. Then, we used CSO and Colza oil (CO) and evaluated the levels of the antioxidants (superoxide dismutase [SOD], glutathione peroxidase [GPx] and glutathione [GSH]) as well as a metabolite marker for lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde [MDA]) relating to the antioxidant balance in the liver, brain and kidney. In addition, we measured DNA damage levels in hepatic tissue and the effects of CSO on it. Our study found that iron-dependent GPx activity decreases in the liver and the kidney tissues. Additionally, while iron decreased SOD activity in the liver, it increased it in the kidney. Interestingly, iron treatment resulted in a significant increase in hepatic MDA levels. In contrast, in brain tissue, there was a significant decrease under iron treatment. In addition, we found varying protective effects of CSO in alleviating oxidative stress in the different tissues with ameliorating DNA damage after iron overload in a mouse liver model, adding compelling evidence to the protective potential of CSO.

The behavior of metal ions is commonly studied in pure solvent although, in our daily life, these metals are involved in mixtures of solvents. In the present study, we investigated structures, relative stabilities and temperature dependance of solvated ferrous ion in water-ammonia mixture solvent at 0K and at various temperatures ranging from 25K to 400K. All the calculations are performed at the MN15 level of theory associated with the aug-cc-pVDZ basis set. For deep understanding of binding patterns in solvated ferrous ion in water-ammonia mixture solvent, noncovalent interactions are presented based on the QTAIM analysis using AIMAll. Our results prove that the ferrous ion is more stable when it is solvated by ammonia instead of water. In addition, hydrogen bonds are weakened by the presence of ammonia molecules. The temperature dependence of the different obtained geometries indicates that from s=6 (s is the sum of water and ammonia molecules around the ferrous ion), when the number of water molecules is almost equal to that of ammonia, the structures with coordination number 5 are dominant. However, the coordination number is six when there are a maximum water molecules (rich water solution) or maximum ammonia molecules (rich ammonia solution) around the ferrous ion (for s≥6). The QTAIM analysis shows that there are two coordination bondings and four hydrogen bondings. Furthermore, it is found that the Fe2+â¯N coordination bondings are stronger than the Fe2+â¯O confirming that the ferrous ion prefers to be solvated by ammonia instead of water.

The utilization of electroplating sludge (ES) to derive metal oxide functional materials is a key strategy, as it enables the recycling of valuable elements, mitigates environmental risks, and aligns with green, low-carbon development strategies. Nevertheless, the development of metal oxide composite functional materials with distinctive structures and properties derived from ES continues to present several challenges. Herein, we synthesized CuFe2O4/MgFe2O4 metal oxide composites from ES by one-step hydrothermal method. As-obtained CuFe2O4/MgFe2O4 metal oxide composites (MMOs) have a unique layered structure, richer mesoporous and microporous structures, activity sites. When evaluated as an adsorbent for Congo red (CR), as-synthesized CuFe2O4/MgFe2O4 with layered structure composite exhibited excellent adsorption capacity (1039.1 mg/g) and reusability (85.55% after five cycles), which was superior to most similar adsorbents reported till date. Such improvement is explored to mainly originate from two respects: the physical adsorption facilitated by the abundant pores formed through the stacking and growth of CuFe2O4 and MgFe2O4, and the chemisorption resulting from surface complexation and hydrogen bonding between the MMOs and CR. This strategy to directly transform ES into functional materials shows great promise both in waste management and preparation of robust adsorbents for wastewater treatment.

The efficient elimination of bacteria within the dentinal tubules has been hindered by the poor deposition and short residence of disinfecting agents. Meanwhile, the current irrigant (e.g., NaClO, 5.25 %) shows severe adverse effects on the surrounding soft tissues because of its inherent high irritancy. To address this issue, this work reports an in situ generated sonosensitizer to handle the biofilm in dentinal tubules with minimal adverse effects. The production of nanoscale sonosensitizer involves the concurrent delivery of H2O2 (0.01 %), ferrocene derivative (Fc), and indocyanine green (ICG). With ultrasound treatment, the reaction between H2O2 and Fc liberated Fe3+ that was further complexed with ICG to generate the nanoscale sonosensitizer in situ, followed by singlet oxygen production for potent disinfecting action. Because the above cascade reactions occur within the confined dentinal tubules, the generated ICG-Fe3+ nanosensitizer would show prolonged retention therein. The anti-bacterial potency of nanosensitizer was demonstrated in petrodish and ex vivo biofilm models. Meanwhile, the transmission electron microscope imaging of biofilm and cytotoxicity assay in L929 fibroblast cells proved the superiority of nanosensitizer against NaClO regarding adverse effects. The current work opens new avenues of biofilm elimination in dentinal tubules, showing a high translation potential.

Kinesin-5 inhibitors offer cancer cell-targeted approach, thus securing reduced systemic toxicity compared to other antimitotic agents. By modifying the 1,4-dihydropyridine-based kinesin-5 inhibitor CPUYL064 with a ferrocenyl moiety (Fc), we designed and prepared a series of organometallic hybrids that show high antiproliferative activity, with the best compounds exhibiting up to 19-fold increased activity. Detecting multiple targets in complex cellular and biological environments yields more reliable results than single-label assays. Here, we introduced an electrochemical biosensor equipped with computing functions, acting as a smart automaton to enable computing-based detection. By defining the logic combinations of miR-21 and miR-122 as detection patterns, we proposed the corresponding AND and OR detection automata. In both logic gate modes, miR-21 and miR-122 could be replaced with single-stranded FO or FA, modified with Fc, binding to the S chain on the electrode surface. This process led to a significant decrease in the square wave voltammetry (SWV) of Fc on the same sensing platform, as numerous ferrocene (Fc)-tagged DNA fragments escaped from the electrode surface. Experimental results indicated that both automata efficiently and sensitively detected the presence of the two targets. This strategy highlighted how a small amount of target could generate a large current signal decrease in the logic automata, significantly reducing the detection limit for monitoring low-abundance targets. Moreover, the short-stranded DNA components of the detection automata exhibited a simple composition and easy programmability of probe sequences, offering an innovative detection mode. This simplified the complex process of detection, data collection, computation, and evaluation. The direct detection result ("0" or "1") was exported according to the embedded computation code. This approach could be expanded into a detection system for identifying other sets of biomarkers, enhancing its potential for clinical applications.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the clinical efficacy and adverse drug reactions (ADRs) of iron preparations. METHODS: A total of 374 patients with iron deficiency anaemia admitted to our hospital between 1 January and 31 December 2020 were included in this study. They were divided into 2 groups based on their medication regimens: Group A (n = 187) took oral ferrous succinate tablets, and Group B (n = 187) received intravenous iron sucrose. The remission of major symptoms, laboratory test results, ADRs and other related data were collected after 4 weeks of treatment. RESULTS: Compared with the pre-treatment baseline, haemoglobin (Hb), serum iron (SI), serum ferritin (SF) and the mean corpuscular volume (MCV) increased in both groups at 4 weeks of treatment (P < 0.05). After treatment, Group A had lower levels of Hb (108.41 ± 8.39 vs. 122.31 ± 6.04 g/L, t = 6.293, P < 0.001), SI (9.72 ± 4.24 vs. 15.62 ± 5.41 µmol/L, t = 5.482, P < 0.001) and SF (27.1 ± 10.82 vs. 39.82 ± 10.44 ug/L, t = 6.793, P < 0.001) compared with Group B. In contrast, there was no significant difference in the post-treatment level of MCV (P > 0.05). The overall response rate significantly differed between the 2 groups (78.61% vs. 90.91%, χ2 = 10.949, P < 0.001). The incidence of ADRs of both groups were similar, and the difference was not statistically significant (χ2 = 0.035, P = 0.851). CONCLUSION: Iron sucrose demonstrates favourable efficacy and safety in treating iron deficiency anaemia.

Frequent occurrence of wound infection caused by multiple-resistant bacteria (MRB) has posed a serious challenge to the current healthcare system relying on antibiotics. The development of novel antimicrobial materials with high safety and efficacy to heal wound infection is of great importance in combating this crisis. Herein, we prepared a promising antibacterial hydrogel by cross-linking ferrous ions (Fe2+) with the deprotonated carboxyl anion in sodium alginate (Na-ALG) to cure wound infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Interestingly, ferrous-modified Na-ALG (Fe-ALG) hydrogel demonstrated better properties compared to the traditional Na-ALG-based hydrogels, including injectability, self-healing, appropriate fluidity, high-water retention, potent MRSA-killing efficacy, and excellent biocompatibility. Importantly, the addition of Fe2+ enhances the antibacterial efficacy of the Na-ALG hydrogel, enabling it to effectively eliminate MRSA and accelerate the healing of antibiotic-resistant bacterial-infected wounds in a remarkably short period (10 days). This modification not only facilitates wound closure and fur generation, but also mitigates systemic inflammation, thereby effectively impeding the spread of MRSA to the lungs. Taken together, Fe-ALG hydrogel is a promising therapeutic material for treating wound infections by Staphylococcus aureus, especially by antibiotic-resistant strains like MRSA.

Elemental iron powders are used as food fortificants to reduce the incidence of iron deficiency anemia. However, many commercially available iron powders are relatively untested in vivo. The purpose of this study was to determine the hemoglobin regeneration efficiency (HRE) and relative iron bioavailability (RBV) of an electrolytic elemental iron powder (EIP), by treating anemic rats with 14 d iron repletion diets fortified with four different concentrations (12, 24, 36, or 48 mg iron/kg diet) of EIP and bakery-grade ferrous sulfate monohydrate (FS; FeSO4â¢H2O), or no added iron (control); n = 9-12/group. The HRE of FS was significantly higher (p ≤ 0.05) than EIP at each concentration of dietary iron tested. For EIP, the HREs (ratios) of diets containing 12, 24, 36, and 48 mg iron/kg were 0.356, 0.205, 0.197, and 0.163, respectively. For both EIP and FS, HRE was inversely associated with increasing dietary iron. The RBVs (%) of iron from EIP in diets at 12, 24, 36, and 48 mg iron/kg as compared to FS were 64.5, 59.1, 50.6, and 54.3%, respectively. Overall, findings show that at the concentrations of iron tested, EIP has RBVs greater than 50% and is an effective fortification agent to replenish hemoglobin and correct iron deficiency anemia.

BACKGROUND: Oral iron for anaemia in pregnancy is often not well tolerated, with poor adherence. Iron administered intravenously might address these tolerance and adherence issues. We investigated the effectiveness and safety of intravenous ferric carboxymaltose versus oral ferrous sulphate on anaemia and iron deficiency among pregnant women in Nigeria. METHODS: We did a multicentre, open-label, parallel, randomised controlled trial of pregnant women (aged 15-49 years) with haemoglobin (Hb) concentrations of less than 10 g/dL at 20-32 weeks' gestation from 11 primary, secondary, or tertiary health facilities in Nigeria (five in Lagos and six in Kano). Exclusion criteria included vaginal bleeding, blood transfusion or major surgery within the past 3 months, symptomatic anaemia, anaemia known to be unrelated to iron deficiency, clinically confirmed malabsorption syndrome, previous hypersensitivity to any form of iron, pre-existing maternal depression or other major psychiatric illness, immune-related diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus or rheumatoid arthritis, or severe allergic reactions. Participants were randomly assigned (1:1) by nurses and doctors using a web-based randomisation service to either receive a single dose of intravenous ferric carboxymaltose (20 mg/kg to a maximum of 1000 mg) or oral ferrous sulphate (200 mg; 65 mg elemental iron) three times daily until 6 weeks postpartum. The study was primarily unmasked. Primary outcomes were maternal anaemia (Hb <11 g/dL) at 36 weeks' gestation and preterm birth at before 37 weeks' gestation, with analysis by intention to treat in participants with available data. This study was registered at the ISRCTN registry on Dec 10, 2020 (ISRCTN63484804) and on ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT04976179) on April 7, 2021. FINDINGS: Between Aug 10, 2021, and Dec 15, 2022, 13â724 pregnant women were screened for eligibility. 12â668 were excluded due to ineligibility for inclusion, and 1056 provided consent to participate and were randomly assigned to either the intravenous or oral administration groups. 527 were assigned to the intravenous ferric carboxymaltose group and 529 were assigned to the oral ferrous sulphate group. 518 in the intravenous group were assessed at 36 weeks' gestational age and after 518 deliveries, and 511 completed the 6 weeks postpartum visit. 513 in the oral ferrous sulphate group were assessed at 36 weeks' gestational age and after 512 deliveries, and 501 completed the 6 weeks postpartum visit. No significant difference was found in anaemia at 36 weeks (299 [58%] of 517 in the intravenous group vs 305 [61%] of 503 in the oral group; risk ratio 0·95, 95% CI 0·85-1·06; p=0·36), nor in preterm birth (73 [14%] of 518 vs 77 [15%] of 513; 0·94, 0·70-1·26; p=0·66). There were no significant differences in adverse events. The most common adverse events were diarrhoea (in six participants) and vomiting (in three participants) in the oral group and fatigue (in two participants) and headache (in two participants) in the intravenous group. INTERPRETATION: Although the effect on overall anaemia did not differ, intravenous iron reduced the prevalence of iron deficiency to a greater extent than oral iron and was considered to be safe. We recommend that intravenous iron be considered for anaemic pregnant women in Nigeria and similar settings. FUNDING: Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The oriented design of reticular materials as emitters can significantly enhance the sensitivity of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensing analysis for disease markers. However, due to the structural fragility of hydrogen bonds, relational research on hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) has not been thoroughly conducted. Additionally, the modulation of luminescence behavior through HOFs has been rarely reported. In view of this, hydrogen-bonded biohybrid organic frameworks (HBOFs) were synthesized and recruited for ECL immunoassay applications. HBOFs was easily prepared using 6,6',6â³,6â´-(pyrene-1,3,6,8-tetrayl)tetrakis(2-naphthoic acid) as linkers via bovine serum albumin (BSA) activated hydrogen-bonded cross-linking. The material exhibited good fluorescence emission characteristics. And the highly ordered topological structure and molecular motion limitation mediated by BSA overcome aggregation-caused quenching and generate strong aggregation induced emission, expressing hydrogen-bond interaction enhanced ECL (HIE-ECL) activity with the participation of tri-n-propylamine. Furthermore, a sandwich immunosensor was constructed employing cobalt-based metal-phenolic network (CMPN) coated ferrocene nanoparticles (FNPs) as quenchers (CMPN@FNPs). Signal closure can be achieved by annihilating the excited state through electron transfer from both CMPN and FNPs. Using a universal disease marker, carcinoembryonic antigen, as the analysis model, the signal-off sensor obtained a detection limit of 0.47 pg/mL within the detection range of 1 pg/mL - 50 ng/mL. The synthesis and application of highly stable HBOFs triggered by proteins provide a reference for the development of new reticular ECL signal labels, and electron transfer model provides flexible solutions for more sensitive sensing analysis.
