RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Point-of-care cardiovascular left ventricle ejection fraction (LVEF) quantification is established, but automatic tablet-based stroke volume (SV) quantification with handheld ultrasound (HAND) devices is unexplored. We evaluated a tablet-based monoplane LVEF and LV volume quantification tool (AutoEF) against a computer-based tool (Tomtec) for LVEF and SV quantification. METHODS: Patients underwent HAND scans, and LVEF and SV were quantified using AutoEF and computer-based software that utilized either apical four-chamber views (Auto Strain-monoplane [AS-mono]) or both apical four-chamber and apical two-chamber views (Auto Strain-biplane [AS-bi]). Correlation and Bland-Altman analysis were used to compare AutoEF with AS-mono and AS-bi. RESULTS: Out of 43 participants, eight were excluded. AutoEF showed a correlation of .83 [.69:.91] with AS-mono for LVEF and .68 [.44:.82] for SV. The correlation with AS-bi was .79 [.62:.89] for LVEF and .66 [.42:.81] for SV. The bias between AutoEF and AS-mono was 4.88% [3.15:6.61] for LVEF and 17.46 mL [12.99:21.92] for SV. The limits of agreement (LOA) were [-5.50:15.26]% for LVEF and [-8.02:42.94] mL for SV. The bias between AutoEF and AS-bi was 6.63% [5.31:7.94] for LVEF and 20.62 mL [16.18:25.05] for SV, with LOA of [-1.20:14.47]% for LVEF and [-4.71:45.94] mL for SV. CONCLUSION: LVEF quantification with AutoEF software was accurate and reliable, but SV quantification showed limitations, indicating non-interchangeability with neither AS-mono nor AS-bi. Further refinement of AutoEF is needed for reliable SV quantification at the point of care.

OBJECTIVE: Exploring the performance of ultrasound-based radiomics in forecasting major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) within 1 year following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients. METHODS: In this research, 161 ACS patients who underwent PCI were included (114 patients were randomly assigned to the training set and 47 patients to the validation set). Every patient received echocardiography 3-7 days after PCI and followed up for 1 year. The radiomics features related to MACE occurrence were extracted and selected to formulate the RAD score. Building ultrasound personalized model by incorporating RAD score, LVEF, LVGLS, and NT-ProBNP. The model's capacity to predict was tested using ROC curves. RESULTS: Multifactorial logistic regression analysis of RAD score with clinical data and echocardiographic parameters indicated RAD score and LVGLS as independent risk factors for the occurrence of MACE. The RAD score predicted MACE, with AUC values of 0.85 and 0.86 in the training and validation sets. The ultrasound personalized model had a superior ability to predict the occurrence of MACE, with AUC values of 0.88 and 0.92, which were higher than those of the clinical model (with AUC of 0.72 and 0.80) without RAD score (Z = 3.711, 2.043, P < .001, P = .041). Furthermore, DCA indicated that the ultrasound personalization model presented a more favorable net clinical benefit. CONCLUSIONS: Ultrasound radiomics can be a reliable tool to predict the incidence of MACE after PCI in patients with ACS and provides quantifiable data for personalized clinical treatment.

PURPOSE: We sought to assess the feasibility, reproducibility, and accuracy of conventional and newer echocardiographic measures of right ventricular (RV) systolic function in adolescent and young adult childhood cancer survivors treated with anthracyclines. METHODS: Echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) were acquired ≤60 days apart in prospectively recruited survivors and RV functional measures were quantitated by blinded observers. Repeat quantitation was performed in a subset to evaluate reproducibility. For each echocardiographic measure, Spearman correlations with CMR measures were calculated, and values in participants with CMR RV ejection fraction (RVEF) ≥48% and RVEF <48% were compared using two sample Wilcoxon rank-sum tests. RESULTS: Among 58 participants, mean age was 18.2 years (range 13.1-25.2) and five participants had CMR RVEF <48%. Intra- and inter-observer coefficients of variation were 8.2%-10.1% and 10.5%-12.0% for adjusted automated strain measures, and 5.2%-8.7% and 2.7% for 3D RVEF, respectively. No echocardiographic measures were significantly correlated with CMR RVEF; only tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion was correlated with CMR RV stroke volume (r = .392, p = .003). Participants with RV dysfunction had worse automated global longitudinal strain (-20.3% vs. -23.9%, p = .007) and free wall longitudinal strain (-23.7% vs. -26.7%, p = .09). CONCLUSIONS: Echocardiographic strain and 3D RV function measurements were feasible and reproducible in at-risk childhood cancer survivors. Although not associated with CMR RVEF in this population with predominantly normal RV function, automated strain measurements were more abnormal in participants with RV dysfunction, suggesting potential clinical utility of these measures.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a common problem amongst diabetic foot syndrome (DFS) patients, associated with peripheral arterial disease. This analytic cross-sectional study investigates the diagnostic efficacy of the Toe Brachial Index (TBI) in the detection of CAD in 62 DFS patients. The presence of CAD was assessed by longitudinal strain echocardiography, a sensitive method that provides a more accurate measure of intrinsic left ventricular contractility than left ventricular ejection fraction, especially in diabetic patients. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression identified CAD-associated factors. Receiver operating characteristic curve evaluated TBI and toe pressure's diagnostic performance for CAD. p-Values < 0.05 were considered significant. There was a significant association between TBI and CAD, with each 0.01 increase in TBI associated with a 15% decrease in the odds of CAD development (odds ratio = 0.85, 95% CI: 0.72-0.99, p = 0.039). TBI demonstrated an area under the curve of 0.854, a sensitivity of 80.0% and a specificity of 66.7% at a cut-off of 0.69. Additionally, toe pressure exhibited an area under the curve of 0.845, sensitivity of 74.0% and specificity of 75.0% at a cut-off of 68.0 mmHg. Overall accuracy for TBI and toe pressure was 77.4% and 74.2%, respectively, indicating their potential for CAD risk stratification in the DFS population. This study highlights a significant association between low TBI and the presence of CAD in DFS patients. Consequently, TBI emerges as a valuable screening tool for identifying CAD within this population.

Aim. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between seismocardiographic and echocardiographic systolic variables and whether a decrease in preload could be detected by the seismocardiography (SCG).Methods. This study included a total of 34 subjects. SCG and electrocardiography were recorded simultaneously followed by echocardiography (echo) in both supine and 30◦head-up tilted position. The SCG signals was segmented into individual heartbeats and systolic fiducial points were defined using a detection algorithm. Statistical analysis included correlation coefficient calculations and paired sample tests.Results. SCG was able to measure a decrease in preload by almost all of the examined systolic SCG variables. It was possible to correlate certain echo variables to SCG time intervals, amplitudes, and peak to peak intervals. Also, changes between supineand tilted position of some SCG variables were possible to correlate to changes in echo variables. LVET, IVCT, S', strain, SR, SV, and LVEF were significantly correlated to relevant SCG variables.Conclusion. This study showed a moderate correlation, between systolic echo and systolic SCG variables. Additionally, systolic SCG variables were able to detect a decrease in preload.

INTRODUCTION: Assessment of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is one of the primary objectives of echocardiography. The gold standard assessment technique in emergency medicine is eyeballing. A new tool is now available on pocket ultrasound devices (PUD): automatic LVEF. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the concordance between LVEF values estimated by automatic LVEF with PUD and by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MATERIALS: This was a prospective, monocentric, and observational study. All adult patients with an indication for cardiac MRI underwent a point-of-care ultrasound. Blinded to the MRI results, the emergency physician assessed LVEF using the automatic PUD tool and by visual evaluation. RESULTS: Sixty patients were included and analyzed. Visual estimation of LVEF was feasible for all patients and automatic evaluation for 52 (87%) patients. Lin's concordance correlation coefficient between automatic ejection fraction with PUD and by cardiac MRI was 0.23 (95% CI, 0.03-0.40). CONCLUSION: Concordance between LVEF estimated by the automatic ejection fraction with PUD and LVEF estimated by MRI was non-existent.

The generalization of deep neural network algorithms to a broader population is an important challenge in the medical field. We aimed to apply self-supervised learning using masked autoencoders (MAEs) to improve the performance of the 12-lead electrocardiography (ECG) analysis model using limited ECG data. We pretrained Vision Transformer (ViT) models by reconstructing the masked ECG data with MAE. We fine-tuned this MAE-based ECG pretrained model on ECG-echocardiography data from The University of Tokyo Hospital (UTokyo) for the detection of left ventricular systolic dysfunction (LVSD), and then evaluated it using multi-center external validation data from seven institutions, employing the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) for assessment. We included 38,245 ECG-echocardiography pairs from UTokyo and 229,439 pairs from all institutions. The performances of MAE-based ECG models pretrained using ECG data from UTokyo were significantly higher than that of other Deep Neural Network models across all external validation cohorts (AUROC, 0.913-0.962 for LVSD, p < 0.001). Moreover, we also found improvements for the MAE-based ECG analysis model depending on the model capacity and the amount of training data. Additionally, the MAE-based ECG analysis model maintained high performance even on the ECG benchmark dataset (PTB-XL). Our proposed method developed high performance MAE-based ECG analysis models using limited ECG data.

BACKGROUND: The ratio (E/Ea) of mitral Doppler inflow velocity to annular tissue Doppler wave velocity by transthoracic echocardiography and diaphragmatic excursion (DE) by diaphragm ultrasound have been confirmed to predict extubation outcomes. However, few studies focused on the predicting value of E/Ea and DE at different positions during a spontaneous breathing trial (SBT), as well as the effects of △E/Ea and △DE (changes in E/Ea and DE during a SBT). METHODS: This study was a reanalysis of the data of 60 difficult-to-wean patients in a previous study published in 2017. All eligible participants were organized into respiratory failure (RF) group and extubation success (ES) group within 48 h after extubation, or re-intubation (RI) group and non-intubation (NI) group within 1 week after extubation. The risk factors for respiratory failure and re-intubation including E/Ea and △E/Ea, DE and △DE at different positions were analyzed by multivariate logistic regression, respectively. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves of E/Ea (septal, lateral, average) and DE (right, left, average) were compared with each other, respectively. RESULTS: Of the 60 patients, 29 cases developed respiratory failure within 48 h, and 14 of those cases required re-intubation within 1 week. Multivariate logistic regression showed that E/Ea were all associated with respiratory failure, while only DE (right) and DE (average) after SBT were related to re-intubation. There were no statistic differences among the ROC curves of E/Ea at different positions, nor between the ROC curves of DE. No statistical differences were shown in △E/Ea between RF and ES groups, while △DE (average) was remarkably higher in NI group than that in RI group. However, multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that △DE (average) was not associated with re-intubation. CONCLUSIONS: E/Ea at different positions during a SBT could predict postextubation respiratory failure with no statistical differences among them. Likewise, only DE (right) and DE (average) after SBT might predict re-intubation with no statistical differences between each other.

Little is known about the prognostic value of left atrial strain by four-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography in end-stage renal disease patients with preserved left ventricular ejection fraction. This prospective study collected clinical and echocardiographic data from 80 stable dialysis patients (mean age 57 ± 10 years; 62.5% men). All patients underwent the dedicated four-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography to measure LASr (peak longitudinal strain of reservoir function), LAScd (peak longitudinal strain of conduit function), LASct (peak longitudinal strain of contractile function), LASr_c (peak circumferential strain of reservoir function), LAScd_c (peak circumferential strain of conduit function) and LASct_c (peak circumferential strain of contractile function). These patients were enrolled from August 2021 to August 2023 and followed-up for 19 months (interquartile-range 15 to 20 months). The primary outcome was a composite of all-cause mortality or major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs). The study patients were classified into event (developed mortality or MACEs) and event-free group according to the primary outcome. Multivariate Cox regression analysis was used to investigate risk factors for all-cause mortality or MACEs. The event group had lower LASr (16.4% vs. 21.2%, P = 0.0003), LASct (8.2% vs. 11.2%, P = 0.01), LASr_c (25.2% vs. 35.0%, P = 0.0004) and LASct_c (14.9% vs. 20.9%, P = 0.001) than the event-free group. Using optimal cut-off value determined by ROC curve, the less LASr (LASr < 18.5%), LASct (LASct < 8.5%), LASr_c (LASr_c < 28.5%), and LASct_c (LASct_c < 17.5%) group had a higher mortality or MACEs rate. Multivariate cox regression analyses revealed that LASr (HR = 0.81, 95% CI [0.17; 0.91], P = 0.0005, per 1% increase) and LASr_c (HR = 0.93, 95% CI [0.87; 0.98], P = 0.01, per 1% increase) were independent predictors of all-cause mortality or MACEs. Less peak longitudinal and circumferential strains of reservoir function are predictive of poor prognosis among end-stage renal disease patients with preserved left ventricular ejection fraction.

Despite the presence of various signs of cardiac amyloidosis ("red flags"), the introduction into routine practice of new non-invasive diagnostic methods (Speckle Tracking technology using echocardiography, myocardial scintigraphy with technetium pyrophosphate, genetic testing, screening for free light chains of immunoglobulins to exclude AL-amyloidosis), which have high specificity and sensitivity, transthyretinic (ATTR) cardiomyopathy is still a difficult to diagnose disease, especially in the early stages when treatment is most effective. The article presents a clinical case of ATTR-amyloidosis with predominant heart damage, manifested by severe diastolic heart failure resistant to treatment. The timing, from the moment of the first episode of decompensation of heart failure to death, is 4 months, which confirms the rapid progression of severe biventricular dysfunction of the heart. Despite the presence of cardiac and extracardial "red flags" of ATTR-amyloidosis in the patient, the diagnosis was established at autopsy. The paper analyzes possible errors of early diagnosis at the outpatient and inpatient stages of patient management.

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the advanced technique for positioning the endocardial electrodes of a cardiac contractility modulation (CCM) device. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The CCM system was implanted in 100 patients, of which 60 CCM electrodes were positioned in the most optimal zones of myocardial perfusion, in particular, in the zone of the minor focal-scar/fibrotic lesion (the Summed Rest Score of 0 to 1-2, the intensity of the radiopharmaceutical at least 30%), and in 40 patients according to the standard procedure. Before the implantation of the CCM system, 60 patients underwent tomography (S-SPECT) of the myocardium with 99mTc-methoxy-isobutyl-isonitrile at rest to determine the most optimal electrode positioning zones and 100 patients underwent transthoracic echocardiography at baseline and after 12 months to assess the effectiveness of surgical treatment. RESULTS: Improved ventricular electrode positioning technique is associated with the best reverse remodeling of the left ventricular myocardium, especially in patients with ischemic chronic heart failure, with less radiation exposure to the surgeon and the patient, and without electrode-related complications. CONCLUSION: At the preoperative stage, it is recommended to perform a synchronized single-photon emission computed tomography of the myocardium with 99mTc-methoxy-isobutyl-isonitrile at rest before implantation of the CCM device to assess the presence of scar zones/myocardial fibrosis in the anterior and inferior septal regions of the interventricular septum of the left ventricle, followed by implantation of ventricular electrodes in the zone of the minor scar/fibrous lesion, which will allow to achieve optimal stimulation parameters, increase the effectiveness of CCM therapy, reduce the radiation exposure on medical personnel and the patient during surgery.

From its inception as a two-dimensional snapshot of the beating heart, echocardiography has become an indelible part of cardiovascular diagnostics. The integration of ultrasound enhancing agents (UEAs) marks a pivotal transition, enhancing its diagnostic acumen beyond myocardial perfusion. These agents have refined echocardiography's capacity to visualize complex cardiac anatomy and pathology with unprecedented clarity, especially in non-coronary artery disease contexts. UEAs aid in detailed assessments of myocardial viability, endocardial border delineation in left ventricular opacification, and identification of intracardiac masses. Recent innovations in UEAs, accompanied by advancements in echocardiographic technology, offer clinicians a more nuanced view of cardiac function and blood flow dynamics. This review explores recent developments in these applications and future contemplated studies.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is one of the most common non-infectious diseases in the world. Among people with type 2 diabetes, patients of the older age group. An in understanding of the early cardiovascular manifestations of diabetes occupies an important place in international research and prevention programs, given that cardiac vascular complications are the cause of death in patients with diabetes. Recent studies evaluating left ventricular diastolic dysfunction as a characteristic predictor of diabetic cardiomyopathy by echocardiography. In accordance with the recommendations for diastolic dysfunction, have shown that the algorithm of the informative algorithm is used to determine left ventricular diastolic dysfunction in patients with prognosis in predicting cardiovascular complications.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the application value of contrast-enhanced transthoracic echocardiography (cTEE) in the diagnosis of patent foramen ovale (PFO) under different states of stimulation, with the goal of enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of PFO diagnosis. METHODS: This research consecutively enrolled patients suspected of having PFO from October 2022 to February 2024, presenting primary clinical symptoms such as unexplained syncope, headache, dizziness, and stroke. Patients underwent standard transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and cTEE under three different states of stimulation (resting state, coughing, and Valsalva maneuver). Based on the presence of microbubbles in the left heart and their initial appearance time, patients were classified into PFO and control groups, with further diagnostic confirmation via transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) or foramen ovale closure procedures. RESULTS: The study results revealed significant differences between the PFO and control groups regarding age (p = 0.034) and headache symptoms (p = 0.001). In the PFO group, TTE showed a higher positivity rate both at rest and during coughing, highlighting the association between PFO and specific clinical symptoms. The number of microbubbles observed during TTE increased significantly under various stimulation states, particularly during the Valsalva maneuver (p < 0.05). This increase became more pronounced as the duration of the maneuver was extended, underscoring the differential response of PFO patients under varied physiological testing conditions, especially during prolonged Valsalva maneuvers. CONCLUSION: The study confirms the significant value of cTEE in diagnosing PFO under different stimulation states, particularly emphasizing the application of the Valsalva maneuver to significantly improve the sensitivity and specificity of PFO detection. Thus, incorporating cTEE examinations under various stimulation states holds significant clinical importance for enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of PFO diagnosis.

Background: Although infrequent, Sydenham's chorea (SC) may occur as a result of injury to the basal ganglia in children with acute rheumatic fever (ARF) secondary to group A Streptococcal infection. Certain hallmarks of SC, such as movement disorders, could be utilized as a predictive marker for carditis. The present study aimed to investigate neurologic and cardiologic symptoms in children with suspected SC after ARF. Methods: All children aged 5-16 who were admitted at Shahid Madani Pediatric Hospital (Tabriz, Iran), with an initial diagnosis of ARF and SC between 2009 and 2022 were included for echocardiographic assessment and prospective follow-up within 6 and 12 months after the start point. The pattern and severity of valvulopathy, as well as the prevalence of Jones criteria for rheumatic fever, were used to assess the effect. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS Statistics software (version 22.0) using Chi square and Fisher's exact tests. P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The study enrolled 85 children, 36 girls and 49 boys, with a mean age of 9.7±2.7. On the first echocardiography, 42.4% of patients had mitral valve regurgitation (MR), with a predominance of female patients (P=0.04). Of those diagnosed with SC (12 girls and 6 boys), 66.7% showed cardiac involvement, with a higher prevalence of MR in both sexes (P=0.04). The pattern of cardiac involvement after 6 months was significantly different between the groups (P=0.04). However, no such difference was observed during the one-year follow-up (P=0.07). Female sex was found to have a significant relationship with SC localization (P=0.01). Conclusion: In addition to its neurological manifestations, SC can be associated with clinical or subclinical cardiac valve dysfunction that might last for more than a year. RESUMO

Marantic endocarditis is defined as a sterile endocarditis that is rarely encountered in clinical practice. This case series illustrates five cases of marantic endocarditis. All cases were diagnosed on trans thoracic echocardiography and verified on transesophageal echocardiography. The first three cases occur in the setting of antiphospholipid syndrome; the last two occur in the setting of advanced malignancy. Two cases were treated successfully with anticoagulation, while two others required valvular surgery. One case resulted in mortality. The treatment course of these five patients mirrors certain patterns described in the literature.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a genetic disease characterized by unexplained left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), diastolic dysfunction, and increased sudden-death risk. Early detection of the phenotypic expression of the disease in genetic carriers without LVH (Gen+/Phen-) is crucial for emerging therapies. This clinical study aims to identify echocardiographic predictors of phenotypic development in Gen+/Phen-. Sixteen Gen+/Phen- (one subject with troponin T, six with myosin heavy chain-7, and nine with myosin-binding protein C3 mutations), represented the study population. At first and last visit we performed comprehensive 2D speckle-tracking strain echocardiography. During a follow-up of 8 ± 5 years, five carriers developed LVH (LVH+). At baseline, these patients were older than those who did not develop LVH (LVH-) (30 ± 8 vs. 15 ± 8 years, p = 0.005). LVH+ had reduced peak global strain rate during the isovolumic relaxation period (SRIVR) (0.28 ± 0.05 vs. 0.40 ± 0.11 1/s, p = 0.048) and lower global longitudinal strain (GLS) (-19.8 ± 0.4 vs. -22.3 ± 1.1%; p < 0.0001) than LVH- at baseline. SRIVR and GLS were not correlated with age (overall, p > 0.08). This is the first HCM study investigating subjects before they manifest clinically significant or relevant disease burden or symptomatology, comparing at baseline HCM Gen+/Phen- subjects who will develop LVH with those who will not. Furthermore, we identified highly sensitive, easily obtainable, age- and load-independent echocardiographic predictors of phenotype development in HCM gene carriers who may undergo early preventive treatment.

AIM: To evaluate the accuracy of a rapid test for semi-quantitative determination of NT-proBNP levels in the diagnosis of CHF in comparison with quantitative assessment; to study the strength of the association of the results of this NT-proBNP test with indicators of the CHF severity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The concentration of NT-proBNP was determined in 44 patients at bedside both semi-quantitatively using an express test (BioTest, Novosibirsk) and quantitatively in a laboratory. In 11 patients, the severity of CHF was assessed with the CHF Clinical Status Scale (CSS). Echocardiography was performed in all patients. RESULTS: The sensitivity of the quantitative and semi-quantitative tests coincided and was 95%. The specificity of the quantitative test was 100% in our study, whereas the semi-quantitative test showed a specificity of 92%. The negative predictive value of either test was 96%. The diagnostic accuracy was 98% and 93%, respectively. In patients with significantly high NT-proBNP concentrations, the semi-quantitative test demonstrated a reduced ability to verify values above 1800 pg/ml; in patients with threshold concentrations, the semi-quantitative test showed an increased subthreshold sensitivity. Increases in the NT-proBNP concentration correlated with the severity of CHF according to the stage of the disease. CONCLUSION: Due to the sufficiently high sensitivity, specificity, ease of use, and speed of obtaining results, the rapid test for semi-quantitative measuring NT-proBNP is promising for outpatient screening bedside diagnosis of CHF and in the emergency room to confirm or exclude CHF. When determining the dynamics of NT-proBNP during the treatment of CHF, the use of the semi-quantitative rapid test with visual assessment of the results may produce an error compared to the quantitative assessment, which will probably not allow tracking the effect of therapy or predicting exacerbation of the disease.

BACKGROUND: Echocardiography is a tool used in neonatal period to screen for congenital heart defects and to assess the function of the cardiovascular system. It enables obtaining a three-vessel view (3VV) to show how the superior vena cava, the aorta and the pulmonary trunk relate to each other. A 3VV also provides a view of the thymus gland. METHODS: It is a preliminary study. Using the thymus measurements obtained in echocardiography of neonates delivered in one healthcare centre, a total of 1,331 thymus records were collected and statistically analysed. The study was conducted on group of 321 preterm neonates and 1,010 full-term neonates. The superior mediastinal view (three-vessel view, 3VV) was chosen for thymus measurements, with the parallel vascular system, including the superior vena cava, the aorta and the pulmonary trunk, with visible branching to the right and left pulmonary artery. Thymus width, depth and thymic 3VV index were measured. Thymic 3VV index (TI 3VV) is defined as a product of multipling the width and the depth of the thymus in three-vessel view projection. RESULTS: Based on a statistical analysis, a correlation was found of 3VV thymus dimensions and thymic 3VV index with body weight, gestational age and body surface area (BSA). These measurements led to the important finding that the TI 3VV value depends on thymus width and depth, more prominently the latter. The 3VV measurement of thymus depth alone can serve as a screening tool to assess the size of the gland. CONCLUSIONS: Inclusion of thymic measurements in neonatal echocardiography protocol can be used as a screening tool to assess the size of thymus gland.
