RESUMO

This paper reports the reconstruction of the pollution history of 4-tert-octylphenol (OP) and 4-nonylphenol (NP) in the Baltic Sea. Alkylphenols are endocrine-disrupting compound and therefore toxic to aquatic organisms. Sediment cores were collected from regions with relatively stable sedimentation conditions. The cores were dated by the (210)Pb method. The OP and NP were determined using HPLC-FL. The highest inventory of these compounds was observed in the Gotland Deep (610 µg m(2) of NP and 47 µg m(2) of OP) and the lowest-on the slope of the Gdansk Deep (24 µg m(2) of NP and 16 µg m(2) of OP). Such spatial distribution was probably, among other factors, the result of the uplift of the sea floor. The pollution trends of OP and NP in sediments coincided with the following: (1) the beginnings of eutrophication (1960s/1970s of the twentieth century) and (2) strong increase in the areal extent and volume of hypoxia and anoxia in the Baltic (present century).

RESUMO

Extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO), a principal component of the Mediterranean diet (Med diet), is one of the most ancient known foods and has long been associated with health benefits. Many phenolic compounds extracted from Olea europea L. have attracted attention since their discovery. Among these phenolic constituents, oleocanthal has recently emerged as a potential therapeutic molecule for different diseases, showing relevant pharmacological properties in various pathogenic processes, including inflammation, cancers and neurodegenerative diseases. Here, we discuss and summarize the most recent pharmacological evidence for the medical relevance of oleocanthal, focusing our attention on its anti-inflammatory and chemotherapeutic roles.

RESUMO

Bisphenol A (BPA), a synthetic chemical used in the production of plastics since the 1950s and a known endocrine disruptor, is a ubiquitous component of the material environment and human body. New research on very-low-dose exposure to BPA suggests an association with adverse health effects, including breast and prostate cancer, obesity, neurobehavioral problems, and reproductive abnormalities. These findings challenge the long-standing scientific and legal presumption of BPA's safety. The history of how BPA's safety was defined and defended provides critical insight into the questions now facing lawmakers and regulators: is BPA safe, and if not, what steps must be taken to protect the public's health? Answers to both questions involve reforms in chemical policy, with implications beyond BPA.

RESUMO

Two sediment cores, one at middle of the bay (core 1) and another at an outfall of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP; core 2) were collected in Masan Bay, Korea, to investigate the historical records of contamination by polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs), and nonylphenols (NPs). Vertical profiles of PCDD/Fs, dl-PCBs, and NPs in the two cores, dated using (210)Pb technique, were different but they had similar vertical profiles within the same core. The overall concentrations of these contaminants were greater in core 2 (0.05-110ng TEQkg(-1) dry wt for PCDD/Fs; 0.02-4.4ng TEQkg(-1) dry wt for dl-PCBs; 1.0-470microgkg(-1) dry wt for NPs) than in core 1 (0.72-8.0ng TEQkg(-1) dry wt for PCDD/Fs; 0.03-1.4ng TEQkg(-1) dry wt for dl-PCBs; 1.3-110microgkg(-1) dry wt for NPs). In particular, PCDD/F concentrations in core 2 were an order of magnitude greater than the concentrations in core 1. The highest concentrations of all target contaminants in cores1 and 2 were found at the surface layer (dated as 2005) and at 8-10cm ( approximately 2000), respectively. For sediment core 2, rapid changes in the concentrations and sources of target contaminants coincide with the establishment and operation of a WWTP; this suggested that discharges from WWTP contributed to contamination by PCDD/Fs, dl-PCBs and NPs in the bay. Analysis of data by non-parametric multidimensional scaling ordination showed that both the cores were influenced by different PCDD/F sources over time. Inventories and fluxes of PCDD/Fs, dl-PCBs, and NPs have rapidly increased since establishment of the WWTP, indicating that the discharge of WWTP is an important source of sediment contamination in aquatic environment.

RESUMO

An important question being raised by nutritionists today is whether available scientific data support an important role for polyphenols in the prevention of pathologic conditions that represent an important public health burden, such as cardiovascular diseases, cancers, and osteoporosis. More broadly, when can we consider scientific knowledge sufficient to allow specific public health implications and recommendations? The history of the relationship between beta-carotene and cancer illustrates the complexity of the research process leading to the demonstration of a causal relationship between nutritional factors and the prevention of disease. The beta-carotene story, which has developed in the past 30 y, is particularly significant and illustrative because of apparent controversies that are far from resolved. This is an extremely interesting example from which many lessons can be learned. For beta-carotene, we need to collect sufficient information from experimental, clinical, and epidemiologic research before we support any specific public health recommendations. The same principles must be applied to recommendations regarding polyphenols (in particular, which polyphenols, at which doses, to achieve which benefits for which populations). If these questions are not answered, then we run the risk of needing to renounce recommendations regarding polyphenols in the future, damaging the credibility of nutritional recommendations for public health.

RESUMO

Phenols were first isolated in crude form at the end of the eighteenth century. Pure phenol was isolated in 1834 and its structure proved in 1842. In 1860 Küchenmeister first used phenol as a wound dressing in Germany. Lister was to use it in his classical experiments in antiseptic surgery. Substituted phenols, and to some extent phenol itself, are still in use today as antiseptics, disinfectants and preservatives.

RESUMO

The period of 175 years from 1800 to 1975 represents one of significant advancement in prosthetic and restorative dental service. The transition from the time of ill-fitting dentures, fashioned from naturally occurring materials, to the application of synthetic resins for a long list of dental and surgical purposes described in this symposium represents a typical example of technical and professional advancement that has taken place throughout the world society during this same period. As noted in the beginning of this report, the advancement in dentistry has been possible through the cooperative efforts of contemporary scientists in many related fields. If denistry retains this good working relationship, as it is expected to do, then the advancements within the next two generations can significantly change and improve the practice of dentistry from what is presently known, by the application of additional new and modified dental resins.
