RESUMO

The notion of proxy failure provides considerable insight into educational processes, and in childhood education has the potential to elucidate known problems stemming from the early implementation of overly regulated educational regimes. This commentary expands on play and how its relation to learning provides a useful perspective on how activities based on nongoal-oriented interactions can lead to desired outcomes.

IMPORTANCE: Although research has examined early identification of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), few studies have found behavioral markers during midinfancy associated with later ASD diagnosis. OBJECTIVE: To examine infants' play behaviors and atypical positions at age 6 mo and later outcome classification among infants at elevated likelihood (EL) and typical likelihood (TL) for ASD. Atypical positions refer to movement patterns indicative of motor delays or deviations, including atypical extension and flexion, poor weight shift and rotation, hypertonicity or hypotonicity, and the presence of primitive reflex patterns. DESIGN: Observational cohort longitudinal design using blinded video analysis. PARTICIPANTS: Fifty-eight infants (41 EL infants and 17 TL infants) 6 mo of age. RESULTS: Infants later diagnosed with ASD needed more support to engage in play at age 6 mo compared with infants who did not receive an ASD diagnosis (U = 130, z = -2.29, p < .05, r = .31). Atypical positions at 6 mo of age were not associated with a later diagnosis of ASD. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Play behaviors may be early indicators of developmental differences for infants later diagnosed with ASD. The results of this pilot study suggest the need to observe the quality of interaction with a caregiver and objects during early play, which may serve as potential early indicators of ASD. Plain-Language Summary: Few studies have found behavioral markers during midinfancy that are associated with a later diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The results of this study showed that infants who were later diagnosed with ASD were found to have differences in play behaviors compared to infants who were not later diagnosed with ASD. Thus, early play behaviors may be an early indicator of developmental differences for infants who are later diagnosed with ASD.

I argue for a more complicated but nonetheless computationally feasible and algorithmically intelligible interplay between exploration and exploitation and for admitting into our conceptual toolkit regimes of exploitative exploration and exploratory exploitation that can enhance the novelty and usefulness of the results of either problemistic or serendipitous search.

Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most important human pathogenic bacteria and environmental surfaces play an important role in the spread of the bacterium. Presence of S. aureus on children's playgrounds and on toys was described in international studies, however, little is known about the prevalence and characteristics of S. aureus at playgrounds in Europe. In this study, 355 samples were collected from playgrounds from 16 cities in Hungary. Antibiotic susceptibility of the isolates was tested for nine antibiotics. Presence of virulence factors was detected by PCR. Clonal diversity of the isolates was tested by PFGE and MLST. The overall prevalence of S. aureus was 2.81% (10/355) and no MRSA isolates were found. Presence of spa (10), fnbA (10), fnbB (5), icaA (8), cna (7), sea (2), hla (10), hlb (2) and hlg (6) virulence genes were detected. The isolates had diverse PFGE pulsotypes. With MLST, we have detected isolates belonging to ST8 (CC8), ST22 (CC22), ST944 and ST182 (CC182), ST398 (CC398), ST6609 (CC45), ST3029 and ST2816. We have identified a new sequence type, ST6609 of CC45. S. aureus isolates are present on Hungarian playgrounds, especially on plastic surfaces. The isolates were clonally diverse and showed resistance to commonly used antibiotics. These data reinforce the importance of the outdoor environment in the spread for S. aureus in the community.

This study aimed to evaluate the children's usage and their physical activity levels at playgrounds with (N = 4) and without (N = 4) organized sports activities, following a quasi-experimental study design. Direct observations were used to assess the playground usage and estimate the playground users' age category, sex, and physical activity intensity level. The results indicated that playgrounds with sports activities were associated with 53% more users at the time of the activities. However, this increase was only seen in boys. Furthermore, playgrounds with sport activities were not associated with different physical activity levels in children as compared to children on regular playgrounds.

The decline of children's opportunities to play outdoors raises a new concern about the quality of outdoor play environments, and their developmental and well-being benefits for children. This systematic review aims to synthesize the associations between outdoor play features and children's behavior and health. PRISMA guidelines were followed (2021). The inclusion criteria were studies with children aged between 5 and 12 (Population); that addressed presence, absence or disposition of equipment, natural elements, loose parts, resources availability, type of terrain and space modifications (Intervention or Exposure); in pre-post intervention or between groups (Comparison); related to health and behavior in different domains (Outcomes); with an experimental, observational, descriptive or longitudinal design (Study design). Indoor context, adult-led activities and structured activities were excluded. A literature search of five databases (PubMed, Web of Science, ERIC, Scopus, and PsycINFO) was concluded in March 2022. After identifying 28,772 records, duplicates and irrelevant titles were removed, and abstracts and full-text articles were screened in duplicate. The remaining 51 eligible articles (45 primary studies) were assessed for risk of bias with QualSyst. A narrative synthesis of the results was conducted. The most frequent behavioral or health outcome addressed was physical activity. Included studies focused on the following space features: fixed structures, space naturalness, floor markings, loose parts/equipment, area available, and the combination of factors. Although some positive effects were found, the heterogeneity between studies did not allow to draw firm conclusions on the effects of each environmental feature on primary children's health and behavior. INTRODUÇÃO: A inserção da psicologia e o método lúdico de intervenção na esfera hospitalar surge para promover bem-estar frente às vivências das crianças em condição de internação. O enfrentamento de uma hospitalização no período da infância pode provocar impactos significativos do ponto de vista orgânico, psíquico e ambiental, por ser um momento de estruturação do indivíduo enquanto sujeito psíquico. OBJETIVO: Posto isso, o presente artigo objetiva refletir sobre a relação da família e da equipe de saúde com crianças hospitalizadas e a relevância da utilização dos recursos lúdicos, a partir de um relato de experiência de estagiários de um curso de graduação em psicologia. MÉTODO: Logo, trata-se de um relato de experiência, de abordagem qualitativa e de natureza descritiva, realizado de março de 2022 a junho de 2023, em uma Unidade Pediátrica de um Hospital Público Brasileiro. RESULTADOS E DISCUSSÃO: A partir disso, observaram-se na prática reações de estranhamento dos pacientes ao se depararem com a permanência no hospital, o adoecimento e os procedimentos das equipes multiprofissionais de saúde; bem como evidenciou-se a importância da transmissão das informações e do preparo verbal ante intervenções, visando a participação ativa do paciente em seu tratamento. Também observou-se a significância do uso de ferramentas lúdicas nas intervenções com as crianças, que facilitam a adaptação ao contexto e proporcionam âncora para estas elaborarem suas vivências. CONCLUSÃO: Portanto, conclui-se que a utilização de recursos lúdicos favorece o atendimento psicológico na infância e período de hospitalização.


INTRODUCTION: The integration of psychology and the playing method of intervention in the hospital setting emerges to promote wellbeing in the face of children's experiences during hospitalization. Confronting hospitalization during childhood can lead to significant impacts from organic, psychological, and environmental standpoints, as it represents a pivotal moment in the individual's psychological development. OBJECTIVE: With this in mind, the present article aims to reflect on the relationship between families and healthcare teams with hospitalized children and the relevance of using playful resources, based on an experience report from interns of an undergraduate psychology course. METHOD: Therefore, it constitutes an experiential account, employing a qualitative and descriptive approach, conducted from March 2022 to June 2023, in a Pediatric Unit of a Brazilian Public Hospital. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: From this perspective, practical observations revealed patients' feelings of unfamiliarity upon facing hospital stays, illness, and procedures performed by multidisciplinary healthcare teams; as well as the significance of conveying information and verbal preparation before interventions was highlighted, aiming to actively involve the patient in their treatment. It was also observed the significance of using playful tools in interventions with children, which facilitates adaptation to the context and provides an anchor for them to elaborate on their experiences. CONCLUSION: Thus, it can be concluded that the use of playful resources enhances psychological care during childhood and the hospitalization period.


INTRODUCCIÓN: La inserción de la psicología y el método lúdico de intervención en el ámbito hospitalario surge con el propósito de promover el bienestar frente a las experiencias de los niños en condiciones de hospitalización. Enfrentar la hospitalización durante la infancia puede generar impactos significativos desde un punto de vista orgánico, psicológico y ambiental, ya que representa un momento de estructuración del individuo como sujeto psíquico. OBJETIVO: En este sentido, el presente artículo tiene como objetivo reflexionar sobre la relación de la familia y el equipo de salud con niños hospitalizados y la relevancia de utilizar recursos lúdicos, a partir de un relato de experiencia de practicantes de un curso de grado en psicología. MÉTODO: Por lo tanto, se trata de un informe de experiencia con enfoque cualitativo y de naturaleza descriptiva, llevado a cabo desde marzo de 2022 hasta junio de 2023 en una Unidad Pediátrica de un Hospital Público Brasileño. RESULTADOS Y DISCUSIÓN: A partir de esto, se observaron reacciones de desconcierto por parte de los pacientes al enfrentar la permanencia en el hospital, la enfermedad y los procedimientos realizados por los equipos de salud multidisciplinarios; así como también se resaltó la importancia de la transmisión de información y la preparación verbal antes de las intervenciones, con el objetivo de involucrar activamente al paciente en su tratamiento. También se observó la importancia del uso de herramientas lúdicas en las intervenciones con niños, ya que facilitan la adaptación al contexto y brindan un punto de referencia para que estos niños elaboren sus experiencias. CONCLUSIÓN: Por lo tanto, se concluye que el uso de recursos lúdicos favorece la atención psicológica durante la infancia y el período de hospitalización.

OBJECTIVE: To assess levels of pollutants at the sites of new schools and whether pupils are likely to be protected from associated risks. SETTING: Air pollution causes damage to children's health by increasing respiratory tract infection rates, asthma exacerbations, allergies and childhood cancers. Further effects include poorer neurocognitive outcomes and multisystemic illness in adulthood. DESIGN: We obtained a list of all 187 proposed new schools in England from 2017 to 2025 and found locations for 147 of them. We assessed air quality against WHO air quality targets and the air quality percentile of the location relative to pollution levels across the UK. We review relevant legislation and guidance. RESULTS: Our analysis found 86% of new schools (126/147) exceeded all three WHO targets, and every location exceeded at least one. Nationally, 76% (112/147) of sites were in the 60th or greater pollution percentile. Within London, the median pollution percentile was the 90th, with a minimum of 76th and maximum of 99th (IQR=83 rd to 94th). CONCLUSION: The guidance for school proposals does not include any requirement to assess air quality at the identified site. Building regulations also fail to consider how widespread poor air quality is, and significantly underestimates the levels of major air pollutants surrounding schools. Therefore it is unlikely that adequate action to reduce pupil and staff exposure is undertaken.We argue that air quality assessment should be mandatory at the proposal and planning stage of any new school building and that national guidance and legislation urgently needs to be updated.

Social play behaviour is a rewarding activity that can entail risks, thus allowing young individuals to test the limits of their capacities and to train their cognitive and emotional adaptability to challenges. Here, we tested in rats how opportunities for risk-taking during play affect the development of cognitive and emotional capacities and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) function, a brain structure important for risk-based decision making. Male and female rats were housed socially or social play-deprived (SPD) between postnatal day (P)21 and P42. During this period, half of both groups were daily exposed to a high-risk play environment. Around P85, all rats were tested for cognitive performance and emotional behaviour after which inhibitory currents were recorded in layer 5 pyramidal neurons in mPFC slices. We show that playing in a high-risk environment altered cognitive flexibility in both sexes and improved behavioural inhibition in males. High-risk play altered anxiety-like behaviour in the elevated plus maze in males and in the open field in females, respectively. SPD affected cognitive flexibility in both sexes and decreased anxiety-like behaviour in the elevated plus maze in females. We found that synaptic inhibitory currents in the mPFC were increased in male, but not female, rats after high-risk play, while SPD lowered prefrontal cortex (PFC) synaptic inhibition in both sexes. Together, our data show that exposure to risks during play affects the development of cognition, emotional behaviour and inhibition in the mPFC. Furthermore, our study suggests that the opportunity to take risks during play cannot substitute for social play behaviour.

A growing body of research demonstrates that children's pretend play is largely influenced by their understanding of reality. The current work took a novel approach to testing children's understanding of pretense by investigating whether children apply and uphold their knowledge of conventional norms in pretend play. In this study, 3- to 5-year-old children (N = 200) were introduced to a series of pretend play scenarios (e.g., pretending to eat breakfast) in which a puppet pretended to follow a norm (e.g., pretended to eat cereal for breakfast) or violate a norm (e.g., pretended to eat a hamburger for breakfast). These pretend play scenarios were presented as either fantastical or realistic in nature. Consistent with our hypotheses, children evaluated pretend norm violation more negatively than pretend norm adherence and reported liking norm violators less than norm followers. Contrary to our hypothesis, the manipulation of play context (fantastical vs. realistic) did not affect children's evaluations. That is, children were just as negative about pretend norm violations (relative to pretend norm adherence) in fantastical pretend play scenarios as they were in realistic pretend play scenarios. Furthermore, individual differences in children's fantasy orientation did not predict their evaluations. This study is the first to establish that children maintain their real-world understanding of conventional norms in pretend play, providing further evidence that children's pretense is largely realistic in nature.

PURPOSE: More Than Words® (MTW) is a caregiver-mediated intervention program led by a speech-language pathologist (SLP) who teaches caregivers strategies to support their autistic child's early social communication and play development. The program includes group sessions composed of multiple families with children of varying profiles. We explored whether caregiver experiences and perceived outcomes of the virtual MTW program differed depending on the child's age and social communication stage. METHOD: As part of a program evaluation of virtual MTW delivered to over 2,000 families in Ontario, Canada, between 2020 and 2021, we randomly selected 31 families across four social communication stages and two age groups using stratified sampling (n = 4, in all but one subgroup). The Final Reflection and Evaluation form was analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively, and a modified RE-AIM framework guided our analyses, including theme development. RESULTS: Child attributes did not appear to impact caregivers' experiences, but perceived child skill improvements varied by children's social communication stage. The majority of caregivers reported changes in how they interact with their child. Four themes emerged: (a) perceived child skill improvements differed by social communication stage, (b) caregivers gained new knowledge and strategies regardless of child attributes, (c) SLPs effectively managed families' individual needs, and (d) program components were appropriate for a variety of families. CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that the content taught in the MTW program was relevant for a variety of children, including those beyond the program's intended age of 5 years and under. Grouping families of children with varying profiles does not appear to negatively influence caregivers' experiences or perceived outcomes. OBJECTIVE: Unintentional injury is the leading cause of death to children worldwide, and playgrounds pose a significant risk of injury. Those aged 5 and 6 years are particularly vulnerable to playground injuries. Previous interventions have typically targeted environmental modifications or increased supervision to reduce playground injuries; however, minimal research has focused on implementing behavioral interventions that seek to change children's safety knowledge and risk-taking behaviors on the playground. The current randomized trial addressed these gaps in the literature and sought to increase preschool children's hazard awareness skills and knowledge of unsafe playground behaviors and decrease their intentions to engage in risk-taking behaviors on the playground. METHOD: A total of 77 children aged 5 and 6 years were tested at a laboratory on a university campus, using a parallel group design, with 38 randomized to the playground intervention group and 39 randomly assigned to a control group. The intervention was manualized and delivered to small groups of children (3-5) over several sessions. RESULTS: Statistical analyses revealed significant group differences. Intervention experience led to significant increases in hazard awareness skills and knowledge of unsafe playground behaviors, and significant decreases in children's risk-taking behavioral intentions, whereas those in the control group showed no significant changes in these scores. Attention scores for those in the intervention group highlighted that the program content was successful in maintaining children's attention and engagement, and memory scores indicated excellent retention of lesson content. CONCLUSION: The program shows promise in addressing the issue of unintentional playground injuries in young children.

Parental language input influences child language outcomes but may vary based on certain characteristics. This research examined how parental language differs during two contexts for toddlers at varying likelihood of autism based on their developmental skills. Parental language (quantity, quality, and pragmatic functions) was analyzed during dyadic play and mealtime interactions as a secondary data analysis of observational data from a study of toddlers at elevated and lower likelihood of autism. Child developmental skills and sensory processing were also assessed. Parents used more words per minute, directives, and verbs during play and more adjectives, descriptions, and questions during mealtime. Parental language differed based on child fine motor skills, receptive language, and levels of sensory hyporesponsiveness but not autism likelihood. Overall, this study found that parental language varies based on context and child developmental skills. Future research examining parental language should include pragmatic functions and context across developmental trajectories.

There is limited research into the morphology of sex toys, and specifically into (the often phallic-shaped) vibrators and dildos and what they may represent in terms of user preferences for male genital morphology. This study provides insight into consumer preference around vaginally insertable sex toys, their features, and what contributes to their popularity. Using a data set compiling information from the world's largest online sexual wellness retailer Lovehoney, we examined the dimensions, price, and morphological features of 265 sex toys designed for vaginal insertion to determine what contributes to item popularity. Using regression models, we found that realistic features did not predict item popularity, whereas price (p < .001) and circumference (p = .01) significantly predicted the overall popularity of a toy. It appears that consumers show a preference for insertable sex toys that are not direct replicas of the male penis, which suggests they are not seeking a realistic partner substitute. Further, we found that the length of the toy did not significantly predict popularity which is consistent with other work showing that women do not place considerable emphasis on large phallus size. Our results can contribute to future product design and marketing, as well as reveal preferences toward particular characteristics of the phallus (whether real or toy).

We re-examine whether the type of object played with influences parent-infant joint attention. A within-participants comparison of 24 parent-9-month-old dyads, used head-mounted eye-tracking to measure parental naming and infant attention during play with touchscreen apps on a touchscreen tablet or matched interactive toys. Infants engaged in sustained attention more to the toy than the tablet. Parents named objects less in toy play. Infants exhibited more gaze shifts between the object and their parent during tablet play. Contrasting previous studies, these findings suggest that joint tablet play can be more interactive than with toys, and raise questions about the recommendation that infants should not be exposed at all to such technology.

BACKGROUND: Outdoor social participation in the school playground is crucial for children's socio-emotional and cognitive development. Yet, many children with disabilities in mainstream educational settings are not socially included within their peer group. We examined whether loose-parts-play (LPP), a common and cost-effective intervention that changes the playground play environment to enhance child-led free play, can promote social participation for children with and without disabilities. METHOD: Forty-two primary school children, out of whom three had hearing loss or autism, were assessed for two baseline and four intervention sessions. We applied a mixed-method design, combining advanced sensors methodology, observations, peer nominations, self-reports, qualitative field notes and an interview with the playground teachers. RESULTS: Findings indicated for all children a decrease during the intervention in social interactions and social play and no change in network centrality. Children without disabilities displayed also an increase in solitude play and in the diversity of interacting partners. Enjoyment of LPP was high for all children, yet children with disabilities did not benefit socially from the intervention and became even more isolated compared with baseline level. CONCLUSIONS: Social participation in the schoolyard of children with and without disabilities did not improve during LPP in a mainstream setting. Findings emphasize the need to consider the social needs of children with disabilities when designing playground interventions and to re-think about LPP philosophy and practices to adapt them to inclusive settings and goals.

Traditionally, the exogenous control of gaze by external saliencies and the endogenous control of gaze by knowledge and context have been viewed as competing systems, with late infancy seen as a period of strengthening top-down control over the vagaries of the input. Here we found that one-year-old infants control sustained attention through head movements that increase the visibility of the attended object. Freely moving one-year-old infants (n = 45) wore head-mounted eye trackers and head motion sensors while exploring sets of toys of the same physical size. The visual size of the objects, a well-documented salience, varied naturally with the infant's moment-to-moment posture and head movements. Sustained attention to an object was characterized by the tight control of head movements that created and then stabilized a visual size advantage for the attended object for sustained attention. The findings show collaboration between exogenous and endogenous attentional systems and suggest new hypotheses about the development of sustained visual attention.
