RESUMO

Psittacine beak and feather disease virus (PBFDV) and budgerigar fledgling disease virus (BFDV) are significant avian pathogens that threaten both captive and wild birds, particularly parrots, which are common hosts. This study involved sampling and testing of 516 captive birds from households, pet shops, and an animal clinic in Hong Kong for PBFDV and BFDV. The results showed that PBFDV and BFDV were present in 7.17% and 0.58% of the samples, respectively. These rates were lower than those reported in most parts of Asia. Notably, the infection rates of PBFDV in pet shops were significantly higher compared to other sources, while no BFDV-positive samples were found in pet shops. Most of the positive samples came from parrots, but PBFDV was also detected in two non-parrot species, including Swinhoe's white-eyes (Zosterops simplex), which had not been reported previously. The ability of PBFDV to infect both psittacine and passerine birds is concerning, especially in densely populated urban areas such as Hong Kong, where captive flocks come into close contact with wildlife. Phylogenetic analysis of the Cap and Rep genes of PBFDV revealed that the strains found in Hong Kong were closely related to those in Europe and other parts of Asia, including mainland China, Thailand, Taiwan, and Saudi Arabia. These findings indicate the presence of both viruses among captive birds in Hong Kong. We recommend implementing regular surveillance for both viruses and adopting measures to prevent contact between captive and wild birds, thereby reducing the transmission of introduced diseases to native species.

This randomized, crossover study evaluated three sedation protocols administered subcutaneously in nine budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) and nine black-cheeked lovebirds (Agapornis nigrigenis). All protocols included midazolam (5 mg/kg), combined with butorphanol (5 mg/kg) (BM), medetomidine (20 lg/kg) (MM), or alfaxalone (13 mg/kg) (AM). Mortalities from suspected cardiorespiratory arrest were observed when AM was used in lovebirds, even after reduction of alfaxalone dosage to 3 mg/kg, and therefore this protocol was excluded from further use in this species. Induction and recovery times were recorded and their quality assessed. Sedation depth and heart and respiratory rates were measured every 5 min and radiographic positioning was attempted at 10 and 20 min. At 30 min, midazolam and medetomidine were reversed with flumazenil (0.05 mg/kg, SC), and atipamezole (0.2 mg/kg, SC), respectively. MM consistently provided deep sedation in both species, with successful radiographic positioning at every attempt. As expected, heart rate was often lower with MM than with other protocols, but no associated complications were noted. In budgerigars, BM had the lowest radiographic positioning success rate (10 min: 5/9, 20 min: 3/9), whereas in lovebirds it provided significantly deeper sedation (P < 0.001), allowing radiographic positioning in all subjects. In both species, BM provided the shortest recovery times. AM resulted in reliable radiographic positioning of all budgerigars at 10 min, but not at 20 min (5/ 9), and provided consistently poor recoveries. This study highlights how differently two psittacine species of similar size may react to the same sedation protocols. AM sedation cannot be fully reversed and produced significant undesirable effects, several of which have been previously reported with alfaxalone administration to avian species. The authors therefore caution against using alfaxalone-midazolam combinations in budgerigars and black-cheeked lovebirds. Both BM and MM provided reliable sedation in these species, and appear to be suitable alternatives to AM.

Avian gastric yeast (Macrorhabdus ornithogaster) is a microorganism that infects aviary birds worldwide, both captive and wild. A total number of 352 birds, belonging to 18 avian species, were examined from 2019 to 2022 for M. ornithogaster, using fecal smears of live birds or cytological samples of the proventriculus taken at necropsy. These cytological samples were taken from birds that died from different causes. Some of the birds exhibited symptoms such as lethargy, regurgitation, weight loss and anorexia. Faecal samples were collected from all the birds and analysed for gastric yeast using a direct smear and Gram-staining method. The microorganism was diagnosed most frequently in budgerigars (55.5%), the African gray parrot (33.3%), and nymphs (34.3%). The prevalence of M. ornithogaster in canaries was 10%. The infection was detected in 31% of the examined birds, which shows that the occurrence of M. ornithogaster in exotic birds is common. No clinical signs were observed in the vast majority of birds that tested positive for gastric yeast.

Predation risk may affect the foraging behavior of birds. However, there has been little research on the ability of domestic birds to perceive predation risk and thus adjust their feeding behavior. In this study, we tested whether domestic budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) perceived predation risk after the presentation of specimens and sounds of sparrowhawks (Accipiter nisus), domestic cats (Felis catus), and humans, and whether this in turn influenced their feeding behavior. When exposed to visual or acoustic stimuli, budgerigars showed significantly longer latency to feed under sparrowhawk, domestic cat, and human treatments than with controls. Budgerigars responded more strongly to acoustic stimuli than visual stimuli, and they showed the longest latency to feed and the least number of feeding times in response to sparrowhawk calls. Moreover, budgerigars showed shorter latency to feed and greater numbers of feeding times in response to human voices than to sparrowhawk or domestic cat calls. Our results suggest that domestic budgerigars may identify predation risk through visual or acoustic signals and adjust their feeding behavior accordingly.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to assess the pelvimetric values obtained from radiographic pelvis images of budgerigars in terms of sexual dimorphism. The objectives included determining linear osteometric and angle measurements of the pelvis, as well as calculating the length-to-width ratios among different pelvimetric measurements. Additionally, the study aimed to reveal the correlations between age and body weight with both the pelvimetric measurements and ratio measurements in these animals. METHODS: In this study, measurements of linear distance, angle and length-to-width ratios were obtained from ventrodorsal images of the pelvis in a sample of 60 budgerigars, consisting of 30 males and 30 females. Subsequently, the statistical analysis of the obtained measurement values was performed. RESULTS: When analysing the morphometric measurement values based on sex, it was observed that all linear measurements (L1, L2, L3, L4, L5, L6, L7, L8, L9, L10 and L11) were higher in males, whereas the angle measurements (A1, LA2 and RA2) were found to be significantly greater in females (p < 0.05). Additionally, both male and female budgerigars exhibited a greater pre-acetabular length of the ilium compared to the post-acetabular length. Moreover, there were mostly positive significant correlations between age and body weight with the pelvic measurement values in both sexes (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The obtained biometric measurement values from pelvimetric X-ray images in budgerigars were analysed to assess sexual dimorphism. Furthermore, this study presents fundamental morphometric data that can be valuable for clinical, taxonomic, phylogenetic, ornithological, allometric and characterization studies of budgerigars.

Cochlear synaptopathy is a common pathology in humans associated with aging and potentially sound overexposure. Synaptopathy is widely expected to cause "hidden hearing loss," including difficulty perceiving speech in noise, but support for this hypothesis is controversial. Here in budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus), we evaluated the impact of long-term cochlear synaptopathy on behavioral discrimination of Gaussian noise (GN) and low-noise noise (LNN) signals processed to have a flatter envelope. Stimuli had center frequencies of 1-3kHz, 100-Hz bandwidth, and were presented at sensation levels (SLs) from 10 to 30dB. We reasoned that narrowband, low-SL stimuli of this type should minimize spread of excitation across auditory-nerve fibers, and hence might reveal synaptopathy-related defects if they exist. Cochlear synaptopathy was induced without hair-cell injury using kainic acid (KA). Behavioral threshold tracking experiments characterized the minimum stimulus duration above which animals could reliably discriminate between LNN and GN. Budgerigar thresholds for LNN-GN discrimination ranged from 40 to 60ms at 30dB SL, were similar across frequencies, and increased for lower SLs. Notably, animals with long-term 39-77% estimated synaptopathy performed similarly to controls, requiring on average a ∼7.5% shorter stimulus duration (-0.7±1.0dB; mean difference ±SE) for LNN-GN discrimination. Decision-variable correlation analyses of detailed behavioral response patterns showed that individual animals relied on envelope cues to discriminate LNN and GN, with lesser roles of FM and energy cues; no difference was found between KA-exposed and control groups. These results suggest that long-term cochlear synaptopathy does not impair discrimination of low-level signals with different envelope statistics.

PURPOSE: Loss of auditory nerve afferent synapses with cochlear hair cells, called cochlear synaptopathy, is a common pathology in humans caused by aging and noise overexposure. The perceptual consequences of synaptopathy in isolation from other cochlear pathologies are still unclear. Animal models provide an effective approach to resolve uncertainty regarding the physiological and perceptual consequences of auditory nerve loss, because neural lesions can be induced and readily quantified. The budgerigar, a parakeet species, has recently emerged as an animal model for synaptopathy studies based on its capacity for vocal learning and ability to behaviorally discriminate simple and complex sounds with acuity similar to humans. Kainic acid infusions in the budgerigar produce a profound reduction of compound auditory nerve responses, including wave I of the auditory brainstem response, without impacting physiological hair cell measures. These results suggest selective auditory nerve damage. However, histological correlates of neural injury from kainic acid are still lacking. METHODS: We quantified the histological effects caused by intracochlear infusion of kainic acid (1 mM; 2.5 µL), and evaluated correlations between the histological and physiological assessments of auditory nerve status. RESULTS: Kainic acid infusion in budgerigars produced pronounced loss of neural auditory nerve soma (60% on average) in the cochlear ganglion, and of peripheral axons, at time points 2 or more months following injury. The hair cell epithelium was unaffected by kainic acid. Neural loss was significantly correlated with reduction of compound auditory nerve responses and auditory brainstem response wave I. CONCLUSION: Compound auditory nerve responses and wave I provide a useful index of cochlear synaptopathy in this animal model.

Dialectic signatures in animal acoustic signals are key in the identification of and association with group members. Complex vocal sequences may also convey information about behavioral state, and may thus vary according to social environment. Some bird species, such as psittaciforms, learn and modify their complex acoustic signals throughout their lives. However, the structure and function of vocal sequences in open-ended vocal learners remains understudied. Here, we examined vocal sequence variation in the warble song of budgerigars, and how these change upon contact between social groups. Budgerigars are open-ended vocal learners which exhibit fission-fusion flock dynamics in the wild. We found that two captive colonies of budgerigars exhibited colony-specific differences in the syntactic structure of their vocal sequences. Individuals from the two colonies differed in the propensity to repeat certain note types, forming repetitive motifs which served as higher-order signatures of colony identity. When the two groups were brought into contact, their vocal sequences converged, and these colony-specific repetitive patterns disappeared, with males from both erstwhile colonies now producing similar sequences with similar syntactic structure. We present data suggesting that the higher-order temporal arrangement of notes/vocal units is modified throughout life by social learning as groups of birds continually associate and dissociate. Our study sheds light on the importance of examining signal structure at multiple levels of organization, and the potential for psittaciform birds as model systems to examine the influence of learning and social environment on acoustic signals.

BACKGROUND: Bird-related hypersensitivity pneumonitis (BRHP) is an extrinsic allergic alveolitis caused by inhalation of bird antigens. Although the measurement of serum-specific IgG antibodies against budgerigar, pigeon, and parrot with ImmunoCAP® is available in Japan, the utility of the test for patients with causes by bird breeding other than these three species, including contact with wild birds/poultry/bird manure, and use of a duvet is unknown. METHODS: Of the 75 BRHP patients who participated in our previous study, 30 were included. Six cases were caused by bird breeding of species other than pigeon, budgerigar, and parrot, seven were in contact with wild birds/poultry/bird manure, and 17 were using a duvet. Bird-specific IgG antibodies were compared among the patients, 64 controls, and 147 healthy participants. RESULTS: In patients with BRHP caused by bird breeding, budgerigar and parrot-specific IgG levels were significantly higher than in disease controls. Only parrot-specific IgG was significantly higher than in disease controls in patients caused by duvet use. However, among patients with acute episodes (acute and recurrent type of chronic BRHP), IgG antibodies against all three species were significantly higher than those of disease controls caused by bird breeding and the use of a duvet. CONCLUSIONS: Bird-specific IgG antibody with ImmunoCAP® was useful for screening and diagnosing BRHP caused by other bird species and duvets.

Social learning is an adaptive way of dealing with the complexity of life as it reduces the risk of trial-and-error learning. Depending on the type of information acquired, and associations formed, several mechanisms within the larger taxonomy of social learning can be distinguished. Imitation is one such process within this larger taxonomy, it is considered cognitively demanding and is associated with high-fidelity response matching. The present study reproduced a 2002 study conducted by Heyes and Saggerson, which successfully illustrated motor imitation in budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus). In our study, eighteen kea (Nestor notabilis) that observed a trained demonstrator remove a stopper from a test box (1) took less time from hopping on the box to feeding (response duration) in session one and (2) were faster in making a vertical removal response on the stopper once they hopped on the box (removal latency) in session one than non-observing control group individuals. In contrast to the budgerigars (Heyes and Saggerson, Ani Behav. 64:851-859, 2002) the present study could not find evidence of motor imitation in kea. The results do illustrate, however, that there were strong social effects on exploration rates indicating motivational and attentional shifts. Furthermore, the results may suggest a propensity toward emulation in contrast to motor imitation or alternatively selectivity in the application of imitation.

Schroeder-phase harmonic tone complexes can have a flat temporal envelope and rising or falling instantaneous-frequency sweeps within F0 periods, depending on the phase-scaling parameter C. Human tone-detection thresholds in a concurrent Schroeder masker are 10-15 dB lower for positive C values (rising frequency sweeps) compared to negative (falling sweeps), potentially due to cochlear mechanics, though this hypothesis remains controversial. Birds provide an interesting model for studies of Schroeder masking because many species produce vocalizations containing frequency sweeps. Prior behavioral studies in birds suggest less behavioral threshold difference between maskers with opposite C values than in humans, but focused on low masker F0s and did not explore neural mechanisms. We performed behavioral Schroeder-masking experiments in budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) using a wide range of masker F0 and C values. Signal frequency was 2800 Hz. Neural recordings from the midbrain characterized encoding of behavioral stimuli in awake animals. Behavioral thresholds increased with increasing masker F0 and showed minimal difference between opposite C values, consistent with prior budgerigar studies. Midbrain recordings showed prominent temporal and rate-based encoding of Schroeder F0, and in many cases, marked asymmetry in Schroeder responses between C polarities. Neural thresholds for Schroeder-masked tone detection were often based on a response decrement compared to the masker alone, consistent with prominent modulation tuning in midbrain neurons, and were generally similar between opposite C values. The results highlight the likely importance of envelope cues in Schroeder masking and show that differences in supra-threshold Schroeder responses do not necessarily result in neural threshold differences.

The adenovirus family of adenoviridae includes mammalian adenoviruses (mastadenoviruses) and avian adenoviruses (avi-adenoviruses), which are known to cause cold or flu and HPS. A wide variety of afflicted birds, including chicken, pigeon, and psittacine species, have been reported to carry aviadenoviruses. Fowl adenovirus, which causes hydropericardium syndrome (FAdV). The disease is highly contagious and quickly spreads from one flock to another and from one farm to another using mechanical and horizontal transmission paths as well as contaminated litter. The drug Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is reported to have a significant binding affinity against the 7W83 receptors (-7.7 kcal/mol) respectively. The study focuses on the therapeutic methodology development of Adenoviral infection. In order to discover useful combinations of the drugs in practice, molecular docking methods were also used to match fowl adenovirus protein with anti-viral compounds. To further support the docking effects, extensive molecular dynamics simulations were also used.

In some species, the ability to acquire new vocalizations persists into adulthood and may be an important mediator of social interactions. While it is generally assumed that vocal learning persists undiminished throughout the lifespan of these open-ended learners, the stability of this trait remains largely unexplored. We hypothesize that vocal learning exhibits senescence, as is typical of complex cognitive traits, and that this decline relates to age-dependent changes in social behaviour. The budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus), an open-ended learner that develops new contact call types that are shared with social associates upon joining new flocks, provides a robust assay for measuring the effects of ageing on vocal learning ability. We formed captive flocks of 4 previously unfamiliar adult males of the same age class, either 'young adults' (6 mo-1 y) or 'older adults' (≥ 3 y), and concurrently tracked changes in contact call structure and social interactions over time. Older adults exhibited decreased vocal diversity, which may be related to sparser and weaker affiliative bonds observed in older adults. Older adults, however, displayed equivalent levels of vocal plasticity and vocal convergence compared to young adults, suggesting that many components of vocal learning are largely maintained into later adulthood in an open-ended learner.

Many birds move fast into dark nest cavities forcing the visual system to adapt to low light intensities. Their visual system takes between 15 and 60 min for complete dark adaptation, but little is known about the visual performance of birds during the first seconds in low light intensities. In a forced two-choice behavioural experiment we studied how well budgerigars can discriminate stimuli of different luminance directly after entering a darker environment. The birds made their choices within about 1 s and did not wait to adapt their visual system to the low light intensities. When moving from a bright facility into an environment with 0.5 log unit lower illuminance, the budgerigars detected targets with a luminance of 0.825 cd m-2 on a black background. When moving into an environment with 1.7 or 3.5 log units lower illuminance, they detected targets with luminances between 0.106 and 0.136 cd m-2. In tests with two simultaneously displayed targets, the birds discriminated similar luminance differences between the targets (Weber fraction of 0.41-0.54) in all light levels. Our results support the notion that partial adaptation of bird eyes to the lower illumination occurring within 1 s allows them to safely detect and feed their chicks.

Recent psychophysical experiments have shown that zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata-a songbird) are surprisingly insensitive to syllable sequence changes in their species-specific motifs while budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus-a psittacine) do much better when tested on exactly the same sounds. This is unexpected since zebra finch males learn the order of syllables in their songs when young and sing the same song throughout adulthood. Here we probe the limits of this species difference by testing birds on an order change involving just two syllables, hereafter called bi-syllable phrases. Results show budgerigars still perform better than zebra finches on an order change involving just two syllables. An analysis of response latencies shows that both species respond to an order change in a bi-syllable motif at the onset of the first syllable rather than listening to the entire sequence before responding. Additional tests with one syllable omitted or doubled, or with white noise bursts substituted for syllables, indicate that the first syllable in the sequence has a dominant effect on subsequent discrimination of changes in a bi-syllable pattern. These results are surprising in that zebra finch males sing their full motif syllable sequence with a high degree of stereotypy throughout life, suggesting that this consistency in production may not rely on perceptual mechanisms for processing syllable order in adulthood. Budgerigars, on the other hand, are quite sensitive to bi-syllable order changes, an ability that may be related to useful information being encoded in the sequence of syllables in their natural song. Background: Hematophagous mites affect numerous bird species, causing severe injuries to the budgerigars. Some species can cause dermatitis in humans. Aims: The purpose was to morphologically identify the mites related to budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) and their nests in Yucatan, Mexico. Methods: In May 2022, a private budgerigar hatchery was visited and mites were collected from the bodies of the birds and their nests. The morphological traits of the mites were confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. Results: Four of 30 birds showed severe clinical signs of mite infestation. The Budgerigars revealed lesions in the cere, nostrils, eyelids, beak, and paws. The bird's skin showed signs of dryness and beige coloring. The birds with severe damage also presented anorexia and had deformed paws and beaks. The parasitosis was caused by the "burrowing mites," Knemidocoptes pilae. The burrowing mites and the Grallacheles bakeri were recovered and identified from paw scabs. To eliminate mites, a topical application of Ivermectin was administered to the necks of the birds. The dose was a single, which has a residuality of 21 days. Two drops (0.115 mg/ml) of ivermectin were applied to each bird. A gradual reduction in crusted lesions due to mite mortality was noted. The "tropical fowl mite" Ornithonyssus bursa was identified in the nests, which represents the first record in Mexico. Conclusions: Three species of mites were discovered in a single budgerigar hatchery. This emphasizes the importance of deworming birds and keeping a clean environment in their cages to reduce the potential for parasitic mite infestation.

Auditory patterns carry information in human speech at multiple levels, including the surface relationships between sounds within words in phonology and the abstract structures of syntax. The sequences of other animal vocalizations, such as birdsong, can also be described as auditory patterns, but few studies have probed how the sequences are perceived at multiple levels. Past work shows that a small parrot species, the budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus), exceeds other birds in sequence perception and is even sensitive to abstract structure. But it is not known what level of auditory analysis is dominant in perception or what limits might exist in sensitivity to abstract structure. Here, budgerigars were tested on their ability to discriminate changes in an auditory pattern, AAB, i.e. sound-same different, to ask how they attended to surface relationships among the sounds and the abstract relationships of same/different among the elements. The results show that the budgerigars primarily used surface transitions between the sounds when discriminating the sequences, but were able to use the abstract relationships to a limited extent, largely restricted to two elements. This study provides insight into how budgerigars extract information from conspecific vocalizations and how their capacities compare to human speech perception.

BACKGROUND: Budgerigar fledgling disease polyomavirus (BFDV) is the pathogen that causes budgerigar fledgling disease in psittacine species. The clinical signs of PBFV infection include ascites, hepatitis, and crop stasis. BFDV is associated with a high mortality rate in nestling birds. In contrast, adult birds only have mild symptoms such as feather dystrophy. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the prevalence, genetic characteristics, and phylogenetic analysis of BFDV in pet parrots in Korea. METHODS: Fecal and tissue samples were collected from 217 pet parrots from 10 veterinary hospitals including Chungbuk National University Veterinary Hospital. The molecular screening was performed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis of the small t/large T antigen gene segment. Full-length genome sequencing with the Sanger and phylogenetic analysis were performed on BFDV-positive samples. RESULTS: The PCR results based on the small t/large T antigen gene marker indicated that BFDV DNA was present in 10 out of 217 screened samples. A whole-genome sequence was obtained from six strains and phylogenetic analysis revealed no significant relationship existed between the species and geographical locations amongst them. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of BFDV infection in South Korea is not high when compared to the prevalence of BFDV in other parts of the world, however, it has been reported sporadically in various species and geographic locations. The whole-genome analysis revealed 0.2%-0.3% variation in intragenomic homogeneity among the six strains analyzed. Korean strains are separately on the phylogenetic tree from their counterparts from China and Japan which might reflect the substantial genetic variation.

OBJECTIVE: To perform a qualitative analysis of the distribution of µ- and κ-opioid receptor mRNA in the forebrain and midbrain of budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus). SAMPLE: 8 brains of male budgerigars. PROCEDURES: Custom-made RNA hybridization probes (RNAscope; Advanced Cell Diagnostics Inc) were used for fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) assays performed on selected fresh frozen prepared sections of brain tissue to identify µ- and κ-opioid receptor mRNA. RESULTS: There was κ-opioid receptor mRNA present in the nucleus dorsomedialis posterior thalami, lateral striatum, mesopallium, tractus corticohabenularis et corticoseptalis, griseum et fibrosum, stratum griseum centrale, medial striatum, and area parahippocampalis. There was µ-opioid receptor mRNA present in the stratum griseum centrale, stratum opticum, dorsomedialis posterior thalami, area parahippocampalis, medial striatum, and nidopallium intermedium. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Consistent with previous studies in pigeons and domestic chicks, κ-opioid receptors were more abundant than µ-opioid receptors in the samples of the present study. The results of this study may also help explain the hyperexcitability or lack of response that can occur with administration of pure µ-opioid receptor agonists, but not κ-opioid receptor agonists. This study was not quantitative, so further research should endeavor to compare the various regions of the brain using FISH technology.

This retrospective study reviews the diseases associated with morbidity and mortality in 221 budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulates) from a captive population from 2013 to 2019. The study aimed to evaluate the health status of a flock of budgerigars typical of today's zoologic collections. Based on previous literature, it was hypothesized that age-related conditions such as neoplasia would be common, whereas metabolic and nutritional disorders would be less common. Neoplasia was widespread among the population, affecting 34% of birds (75/221). Carcinomas made up most neoplastic processes and most commonly affected the renal system (n = 22), followed by the proventriculus (n = 7). Pituitary, adrenal, and hepatocellular carcinomas were less commonly diagnosed. Sarcomas affected the population less often than carcinomas and were found within the coelom (undifferentiated four cases), within the spleen (three cases), within the kidney (two cases), and one subcutaneous soft tissue sarcoma. There were five cases of multicentric lymphoma found most commonly affecting the spleen and liver. Benign neoplasms affected the pituitary most commonly (nine cases), followed by the reproductive system, with seminomas (seven cases) being most common. Macrorhabdus ornithogaster (MO) was found in 56 cases. The majority (38 cases) were found in conjunction with a range of comorbidities, but several birds experienced MO infections alone, and it was thought to have been the cause of death in these birds (22 cases). In contrast to our hypothesis, disease associated with nutritional or metabolic disorders impacted a substantial portion of the population; hepatic lipidosis (26 cases) was the most common along with obesity (26 cases), followed by atherosclerosis, xanthomas, and gout (8, 7, and 4 cases, respectively). Traumatic lesions were noted in 41 cases and were most commonly characterized by head trauma and cerebral hemorrhage. Toxicity was rare; five total cases caused by a single carbon monoxide event were identified.
