INTRODUCTION: Head and neck cancer is considered one of the most common types, and its treatment includes radiotherapy, which can trigger side effects and undesirable sequelae in the oral cavity and dental tissues. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to make an in vitro evaluation of the shear strength and failure mode of ceramic orthodontic brackets bonded with two different composites in enamel submitted to ionizing radiation. METHODS: After the study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee, 60 healthy human premolars were selected and divided into two groups, based on the absence or presence of ionizing irradiation of the enamel. The fragments were thermocycled and then randomly subdivided into two subgroups, according to the composite used for bonding the ceramic brackets (Inspire Ice - Ormco) to the enamel (n = 15): Transbond XT composite (3M), and Light Bond composite (Reliance). After 24 hours, the specimens were submitted to the shear strength test, and the failure mode was analyzed using a stereomicroscope and confocal microscopy. The shear strength data were submitted to two-way ANOVA, considering a significance level of 5%. RESULTS: The groups submitted to radiation presented lower shear strength values (4.48MPa) than those not irradiated (9.23MPa) (p< 0.001), and the tested composites were not statistically different (p= 0.078). Regarding the fracture mode, all the groups presented mostly adhesive fractures. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that ionizing radiation negatively affects the adhesion of ceramic brackets, regardless of the composite used for bonding.

This study evaluated the use of gamma irradiation (3, 6 and 9 kGy) in frozen vacuum-packed beef and subsequent thawing and aging for up to 14 days. The effects on tenderness, color, and oxidative properties were determined and compared to non-irradiated controls for frozen/thawed and chilled vacuum-packed beef. The combined irradiation and freezing/thawing processes increased total exudate loss and reduced the meat water-holding capacity, regardless of the dose used. Myofibrillar fragmentation was favored by the freezing/thawing processes and negatively affected by irradiation. Lower shear force values were observed in the non-irradiated frozen/thawed samples. Frozen samples irradiated at 9 kGy had a higher percentage of soluble collagen, lipid peroxidation, and a more reddish color tone. The meat reducing capacity and oxygen consumption were reduced by freezing and further by irradiation, which also included accumulation of metmyoglobin. It was concluded that irradiation of frozen meat and its subsequent thawing and aging does not confer any additional advantages for beef technological quality.

Objective: To investigate the effect of Er:YAG laser irradiation on the shear bond strength (SBS) and microleakage of self-glazed zirconia (SZ) ceramics. Background: SZ is a novel type ceramic; laser irradiation has started to be used in the surface treatment of different ceramics, while SZ has been rarely studied to improve the bond quality. Methods: One hundred twenty blocks (5 mm × 5 mm × 5 mm) of SZ ceramics were produced and split into eight groups following different surface treatments (n = 15): Group A: no treatment; Group B: standard grid processing; and Group C-H: different Er:YAG laser power settings (100, 200, 300, 400, 500, and 600 mJ). Ten blocks of each group received the measurement of SBS and fracture mode analysis, three blocks underwent the evaluation of the microleakage depths, and the other two blocks were observed under the scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). Results: Group F obtained the highest SBS and the lowest microleakage depth without damaging the ceramic surface structure, which was statistically significant compared with the control group and gridding group (p < 0.05), whereas the difference was not statistically significant (p > 0.05) between group E and group F. The results of bonding performance were consistent with failure types and observation of surface characterizations in SEM images. Conclusions: According to the results here, Er:YAG irradiation had effect on surface treatment. In addition, 400 mJ Er:YAG could increase the SBS and decrease the microleakage depth on SZ ceramics without damaging the surface structure.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the in vitro effects of radiotherapy (RT) on the morphological surface of the enamel and dentin and to determine the best adhesive system and most appropriate time to restore teeth in head and neck cancer patients. METHODS: Sixty third molars were cut into 120 enamel fragments and 120 dentin fragments and divided into four groups (n = 30): G1 (control): nonirradiated, only restorative procedure; G2: restorative procedure immediately before RT; G3: restorative procedure immediately after RT; and G4: restorative procedure 6 months after RT. Each group was divided into two subgroups: Adper™ Single Bond 2 (SB) and Clearfill SE Bond (CL) based on the material used. After RT and restorative procedures, the specimens were subjected to confocal microscopy and shear bond strength test. Data were analyzed using a two-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's test at a significance level of 5%. RESULTS: Morphological changes were observed in both substrates after a cumulative dose of 40 Gy, and after 60 Gy, the changes were more evident in both substrates. CL had the highest strength values in both substrates (p < 0.05), and G2 had the lowest strength values for the enamel and dentin (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Based on the in vitro study results, we can conclude that RT substantially changes the morphological surface of enamel and dentin and impairs the bond strength. The Clearfill system yielded better results than Adper Single Bond 2, and restoring teeth before RT resulted in the worst results in both substrates.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi determinar a energia interfacial para fratura e a distribuição de tensões usando espécimes Brazil-nuts. Esses espécimes foram usinados em zircônia de alta translucidez (Vita YZ HT, Vita Zahnfabrik), super translucidez (Vita YZ ST, Vita Zahnfabrik) e extra translucidez (Vita YZ XT, Vita Zahnfabrik) usando uma máquina de alta precisão, de forma que apresentaram um defeito de forma elíptica no centro de cada hemi-disco totalmente padronizado. As superfícies de cimentação foram preparadas com tratamentos de superfície (jateamento com partícula de óxido de alumínio e aplicação de silano), em seguida seguirão o protocolo de cimentação com cimento resinoso com metacriloiloxi-decil-dihidrogenofosfato (MDP). Os espécimes cimentados foram armazenados em água destilada em estufa 37 °C por 7 dias, em seguida, metade dos espécimes foi ensaiada e a outra metade foi colocada em envelhecimento térmico em uma com banhos de 5- 55 °C (sendo ensaiada logo após o término do envelhecimento). O teste de energia interfacial para fratura (EIF ou tenacidade à fratura interfacial) foi realizado em uma máquina de ensaios universal usando um teste de compressão com a interface adesiva do espécime posicionada em cinco ângulos diferentes (0°, 5°, 15°, 25° e 30°), pois dessa forma foi possível mensurar a EIF em pura tração, puro cisalhamento e em modos mistos de falha. Todas as interfaces foram observadas após a fratura para determinação dos padrões de falha e crescimento de trinca na interface adesiva. Foi realizada também a análise da distribuição de tensões nesses espécimes com o método de elementos finitos (FEA). Foi realizado o teste de normalidade Kolmogorov- Smirnov, Shapiro-Wilk e o Teste de Levene (95%), que concluíram que os dados não apresentam comportamento normal e não são homocedásticos (p=0,000). Desta forma, foi realizado o teste Kruskal-Wallis e post hoc Teste de Dunn, ambos com nível de significância de 5%. Entretanto, não houve diferença estatisticamente significante entre os materiais não envelhecidos (p0=0,485, p10=0,8580, p20=0,4027, e p30=0,650) e envelhecidos (p0=0,6976, p10=0,3505, p20=0,7565, e p30=0,1469). Adicionalmente, foi aplicado o Teste de Mann-Whitney, também com nível de significância de 5%, para comparar cada um dos grupos quanto ao fator envelhecimento; essa análise mostrou diferença estatisticamente significante entre os materiais envelhecidos e não envelhecidos em cada um dos ângulos usados (p>0,05). De acordo com o FEA, o carregamento compressivo de espécimes Brazil-nut em diferentes inclinações permitiu a predominância de tensões de tração ou cisalhamento, conforme o ângulo de posicionamento da interface adesiva. Pode ser concluído que, os valores de energia interfacial para fratura sob tensões predominantemente de cisalhamento são maiores do que quando as amostras estão submetidas somente à tensões de tração. Todas zircônias translúcidas cimentadas com cimento resinoso possuem energia para fratura semelhantes e o envelhecimento térmico afeta negativamente essas interfaces(AU)


The objective of the present study will determine the interfacial energy to fracture and stress distribution using the Brazil-nut specimens. These specimens will be milled in high translucent zirconia (Vita YZ HT, Vita Zahnfabrik), super translucent (Vita YZ ST, Vita Zahnfabrik) and extra translucent (Vita YZ XT, Vita Zahnfabrik) using a high precision machine, so that there will be an elliptical shape defect in the center of each hemi-disk. The cementing surfaces will be prepared with surface treatment (sandblasting with aluminum oxide particles), after that a cleaning, application of Silane, drying and application of resin cement with MDP will hold the cementing protocol. The cemented specimens will be stored in a stove with distilled water at a temperature of 37°C for 7 days after the adhesive cementation, after that the specimens will be aged in a thermal cycling bath machine with temperature varying within 5-55° C and will be tested shortly after the aging. The interfacial energy to fracture test (IEF or interfacial fracture toughness) will be held in a universal testing machine using a compression test with the adhesive interface of the specimen placed in five different angles (0°, 5°, 15°, 25° and 30°) this way it will be possible to measure the IEF in its pure form of tensile, pure shear and mixed modes of failure. All interfaces will be observed after the fracture to determine the patterns of failure and crack growth in the adhesive interface. Also, there will be held the stress distribution analysis in these specimens with the finite element method. The data obtained will be discussed in front of the relevant literature. Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Shapiro-Wilk and Levene Test normality test (95%) were preformed, these concluded that the data do not present normal behavior and are not homocdatic (p=0.000). Thus, the Kruskal-Wallis test and dunn's post hoc test were performed, both with a significance level of 5%. However, there was no statistically significant difference among the non-aged materials (p0=0.485, p10=0.8580, p20=0.4027, and p30=0.650) and aged materials (p0=0.6976, p10=0.3505, p20=0.7565, and p30=0.1469) were analyzed. Additionally, the Mann- Whitney Test was applied, also with a significance level of 5% to compare each of the groups regarding the aging factor. Thus, there was a statistically significant difference between aged and non-aged materials at each angle (p>0.05). According to FEA, the compressive loading of Brazil-nut specimens at different inclinations allowed the predominance of tensile or shear stresses, according to the positioning angle of the adhesive interface. It can be concluded that the values of interfacial energy to fracture under predominantly shear stresses are higher than when the samples are subjected only to tensile stresses. All translucent zirconia resin cement-bonded have similar interfacial energy to fracture, and thermal aging negatively affects these interfaces(AU)

Objective: This study compared the effects of different surface treatments on the surface roughness (Ra), and shear bond strength (SBS) of resin cement to yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (Y-TZP) ceramic and nickel-chromium (Ni-Cr) base metal alloy, respectively. Materials and methods: Thirty disk-shaped specimens (3 mm height and 10 mm diameter) of each material (Y-TZP and Ni-Cr) were prepared. Both zirconia and metal specimens were randomly assigned to three equal groups, according to the surface treatments (n = 10): sandblasting, sandblasting + Er:YAG laser, and sandblasting + Nd:YAG laser. Resin cement cylinders (4 mm diameter and 3 mm thickness) were placed on each specimen. The SBS tests were performed at a 1 mm per minute crosshead speed through a knife-edge rod after 5000 thermal cycles. The Ra (µm) of the specimens was measured using a profilometer and evaluated topographically by atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Analysis of variance, followed by Tukey's honestly significant difference, in addition to the Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by the Mann-Whitney U test, were used for statistical analysis (α = 0.05). Results: Combined sandblasting and laser treatment of the metal groups led to statistically higher Ra values than sandblasting alone (p < 0.05). For Y-TZP, there were no significant differences between the Ra values of the subgroups (p > 0.05). The SBS of the sandblasted metal group was significantly higher than the other two laser-irradiated groups, whereas the SBS of sandblasted zirconia was only significantly higher than the Nd:YAG laser-irradiated group (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Combined laser and sandblasting surface treatments resulted in rougher surfaces than sandblasting alone, especially for the metal specimens. Sandblasting, alone, improved the SBS of resin cement in both metal and zirconia, compared with the laser and sandblasting treatments, combined.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of various presintering and sintered surface treatments and thermocycling on the bond strength between zirconia and veneer ceramics. Background data: Bond stability between zirconia and veneer ceramic is a major concern, and only limited evidence about its longevity is currently available. Moreover, no study has yet evaluated the influence of thermocycling on the bond strength of veneer ceramic to zirconia after Er,Cr:YSGG laser irradiation at different pulse durations and sandblasting. Materials and methods: In this study, 220 nonsintered zirconia specimens were prepared with CAD/CAM and randomly divided into 2 groups; half of the specimens in each group were stored in water for 1 week, and the other half were thermocycled (5000 cycles) between baths of 5°C and 55°C. Specimens were then divided into five subgroups based on the following surface treatments: control (untreated surface), sandblasting (120 µm Al2O3), and Er,Cr: YSGG laser irradiations (3 W-8 Hz, 3 W-15 Hz, and 3 W-20 Hz, MGG 6 laser tip, for 20 sec, distance of 10 mm, water/airflow of 55% and 65%). Morphological assessment was done using atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, and phase transformation was assessed by X-ray diffractometry. All specimens were then veneered with veneering ceramic, and bond strength test using a universal testing device at a 1 mm/min crosshead speed. Data were evaluated by Kruskal-Wallis variance analysis and the Mann-Whitney U test. Results: There was no significant difference in the bonding strength values among the (p > 0.05). Thermocycling reduced the bond strength, but it was not significant (p > 0.05), except for the presintering 20 Hz group (p < 0.02). Conclusions: Application of thermocycling to sintered zirconia specimens may be detrimental to the shear bond strength of zirconia ceramics. Treating the zirconia surface after sintering is not recommended, due to the decrease in bond strength.

Objective: Evaluate the bond strength of repairs made on composite resin following the treatment of the surface of the flaw with different bonding agents and/or CO2 laser. Background: The influence of CO2 laser and its interaction with other bonding agents on the surface of the flaw is not yet known. In this study, CO2 laser was chosen to treat the surface of the flaw due to its capacity to promote irregularities on the surface that enhance mechanical micro-retention. Methods: A block was created with Vitra APS nanohybrid composite resin (color: A3; FGM, Joinville, Brazil) measuring 5 mm in width, length, and depth (volume: 125 mm3). The surface of the flaw was treated before the repair with an adhesive, silane bonding agent, and/or CO2 laser. Six specimens were created in composite resin for each group (total: n = 36): G1: resin+resin; G2: adhesive+resin; G3: laser+adhesive; G4: laser+silane+adhesive; G5: silane+adhesive; G6: laser+silane. After the repair, the surfaces of the fracture of all specimens, which were submitted to the microtraction test, were analyzed under an optical microscope. Bond strength values obtained according to the type of surface treatment were tabulated and submitted to the Kruskal-Wallis test. Dunn's test was used to compare means. Results: G3 and G4 had significantly higher bond strength values compared to all other groups tested. Adhesive fractures predominated in all groups. However, G3 and G4 had a higher percentage of cohesive fractures compared to the other groups. Conclusions: The application of CO2 laser as a surface treatment led to greater bond strength of composite resin repairs in comparison with the groups that only received treatment with a burr and silanization. The groups submitted to CO2 laser also had a significantly lower number of adhesive failures when submitted to the microtraction test.

Objective and background: Different surface treatments have been tested in composite repair studies. However, there is still no consensus on the most effective repair protocol. The aim of this study is to measure the roughness values of eight different surface treatments for the repair procedure, to examine the effect of each surface treatment and three different composites on the repair bond strength with and without silane, and to evaluate whether there is a correlation between bond strength and roughness. Methods: The blocks were prepared with Filtek Z550 (3M ESPE) for the roughness measurements and divided into eight groups according to surface treatments. The roughness values of the surface treatments were measured by a 3D scanning contact profilometer (Nanomap LS). For the shear test, further samples were prepared, aged, and divided into three subgroups for the repair procedure with Filtek Z550 (3M ESPE), Vertise Flow (Kerr, USA), and G-aenial Flo (GC, Japan) after the surface treatments. Then, the shear test was performed. The Kruskal-Wallis and Spearman's Correlation tests were used for statistical evaluation of the data. Results: Significant differences were found between surface treatments and composite resins in terms of bond strength (p < 0.05). There is no correlation between the roughness and bond strength values. Conclusions: In bond strength, surface topography is more important than the numerical value of roughness. In the repair of composite restorations, methods that are already in clinical practice and more practical can be used instead of methods that require additional costs and devices.

OBJECTIVE AND BACKGROUND: The correct selections of the cementing agent, the endodontic post material and placement protocol are critical to provide an increased longevity of the teeth that went through endodontic treatment. The irradiation with diode laser before post cementation, can promote an antimicrobial effect. However, there is a lack of information about the effect of 830 nm diode laser on the post bond strength. This study analyzed the effect of dentin root canal irradiation with high-intensity diode laser, at 830 nm, operating in continuous or pulsed mode, on the retention of metal or fiber posts, cemented with self-etching resinous composite (Panavia F) and zinc phosphate cement (ZnPO4). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Human roots were irradiated with diode laser (continuous and pulsed mode). The fiber posts were luted with Panavia F and the metal posts with Panavia F or ZnPO4 cement. Specimens were sectioned into three sections (cervical, middle, and apical). The bond strength was measured by a push-out mechanical analysis. For the statistical analysis, a three-way ANOVA test was applied following a Tukey's pairwise comparison with a significance level of p = 0.05. RESULTS: The irradiated groups presented higher bond strength compared with nonirradiated group (p < 0.05), and the cervical and middle thirds presented higher on bond strength than the apical. The association of metal post and Panavia F presented higher bond strength when irradiated on continuous mode (p < 0.05). Fiber post and Panavia F presented higher bond strength associated to pulsed mode. The mode seems not to make a significant difference. CONCLUSIONS: These results corroborate the importance of the post bond to dentin and root canal debris removal to increase the tooth longevity. It was shown that the dentin to post bond strength were enhanced by the diode laser irradiation either on continuous or pulsed modes.

BACKGROUND: Glass fiber-reinforced posts have been preferred frequently because of some physical properties similar to the dentin, chemically bonding to dentin, biocompatibility, and esthetics. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the microleakage and bond strength of glass fiber posts cemented with various adhesive systems on laser-etched root canal walls. METHODS: Roots of 120 human mandibular premolars were divided into two groups for push-out bond strength test and the microleakage test (n = 60). Erbium-doped yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) laser etching of the root canal walls was carried out on half of the specimens in both test groups. The laser-treated and laser-nontreated groups were divided again into three subgroups (n = 10). Glass fiber posts (everStick Post) were luted using three different resin cements: total-etch (Variolink N), self-etch (Panavia F 2.0), and self-adhesive (Rely X Unicem). Three dentin discs were obtained from each root, and the bond strength of the glass fiber posts was measured by push-out tests. The dye penetration method was used to investigate coronal microleakage. In addition, surface treatments and the bonding interfaces were observed using scanning electron microscope. RESULTS: The highest bond strengths were observed for the total-etch and self-adhesive resin cement groups with laser etching (p < 0.05), and the lowest bond strength was obtained for the self-etch resin cement group (p < 0.05). There were no statistically significant differences in terms of microleakage (p > 0.05), except for the self-adhesive resin cement group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Er:YAG laser etching enhances the bonding strength of glass fiber posts. In addition, laser etching can reduce microleakage of self-adhesive resin cement.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of pre- and post-irradiation application on the shear bond strength of self-adhesive luting cements to dentin and enamel. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two extracted human maxillary incisor teeth were used in this study. Teeth were divided into two main groups according to preparation depth (0.5 mm and 1 mm) as Group E and Group D and were divided into four subgroups according to treatment protocol (n = 12). Teeth were irradiated and preparation was done after radiation. Adhesive luting cement was placed on the irradiated enamel and dentin surface (Groups E1, D1). Preparation was done before irradiation and resin cement was placed on the irradiated enamel and dentin surface (Groups E2, D2). The resin cement was first placed on their enamel and dentin surfaces and then the specimens were irradiated (Groups E3, D3). Irradiation was done with a total dose of 60 Gy, applied in fractions over 6 weeks for each groups (2-Gy/day fractions, 5 days per week). Nonirradiated groups were determined as controls groups (Groups C1, C2). The shear bond strengths of adhesive luting cement were examined. RESULTS: According to the two-way ANOVA results, depth of preparation and treatment protocol and their interactions were significant on shear bond strength of resin cement (P Conclusions: This study detected significant differences between the irradiated and nonirradiated groups, probably due to the changes in the crystalline structure of dental hard tissues.

Dental hygienists are often faced with patients wearing lingual orthodontic therapy, as ultrasonic instrumentation (UI) is crucial for oral health. As the application of external forces can lead to premature bonding failure, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of UI on shear bond strength (SBS) and on adhesive remnant index (ARI) of different lingual orthodontic brackets. 200 bovine incisors were divided into 10 groups. Four different lingual (STB, Ormco; TTR, Rocky Mountain Orthodontics; Idea, Leone; 2D, Forestadent) and vestibular control (Victory, 3M) brackets were bonded. UI was performed in half of specimens, whereas the other half did not receive any treatment. All groups were tested with a universal testing machine. SBS and ARI values were recorded. Statistical analysis was performed (significance: P = 0.05). TTR, Idea, and 2D lingual brackets significantly lowered SBS after UI, whereas for other braces no effect was recorded. Appliances with lower mesh area significantly reduced their adhesion capacity after UI. Moreover groups subjected to UI showed higher ARI scores than controls. UI lowered SBS of lingual appliances of small dimensions so particular care should be posed avoiding prolonged instrumentation around bracket base during plaque removal. Moreover, UI influenced also ARI scores.

OBJECTIVE:: The aim of this study was to assess in vitro the influence of the CO2 laser and of the type of ceramic bracket on the shear bond strength (SBS) to enamel. METHODS:: A total of 60 enamel test surfaces were obtained from bovine incisors and randomly assigned to two groups, according to the ceramic bracket used: Allure (A); Transcend (T). Each group was divided into 2 subgroups (n = 15): L, laser (10W, 3s); C, no laser, or control. Twenty-four hours after the bonding protocol using Transbond XT, SBS was tested at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min in a universal testing machine. After debonding, the Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) was evaluated at 10 x magnification and compared among the groups. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA, Tukey's, Mann-Whitney's and Kruskal-Wallis tests (α = 0.05). RESULTS:: Mean SBS in MPa were: AL = 0.88 ± 0.84; AC = 12.22 ± 3.45; TL = 12.10 ± 5.11; TC = 17.71 ± 6.16. ARI analysis showed that 73% of the specimens presented the entire adhesive remaining on the tooth surfaces (score 3). TC group presented significantly higher SBS than the other groups. The lased specimens showed significantly lower bond strength than the non-lased groups for both tested brackets. CONCLUSION:: CO2 laser irradiation decreased SBS values of the polycrystalline ceramic brackets, mainly Allure.

AIM: To evaluate the effects of laser etching on the shear bond strengths (SBS) and failure modes of brackets bonded to fluorosed enamel. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This in vitro study included 34 fluorosed and 34 nonfluorosed teeth. Teeth were divided into four subgroups according to the etching procedure: Group (A) normal enamel etched with 37% phosphoric acid for 15 s, Group (B) nonfluorosed enamel etched with erbium:yttrium aluminum garnet (Er: YAG) laser for 15 s, Group (C) fluorosed enamel etched with 37% phosphoric acid for 30 s, Group (D) fluorosed enamel etched with Er: YAG laser for 30 s. After bonding of the premolar metal brackets, specimens were subjected to the thermal cycles. After SBS test, modified adhesive remnant index (ARI) by using stereomicroscope and failure modes with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) was determined. After bonding, one specimen from each group was examined under SEM to identify enamel-resin interfaces. ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc tests were used to compare the SBS values. The Kruskal-Wallis and Chi-square tests were used to analyze the distribution of ARI scores and failure modes of groups. RESULTS: The highest mean SBS value (17.56 ± 1.05 MPa) was found in Group A, while the lowest (12.25 ± 0.96 MPa) in Group D. Significant differences were found in the SBS test and failure modes among all groups. The differences between ARI scores of the groups were not significant. CONCLUSION: According to our findings, laser etching reduced the SBS of brackets bonded to fluorosed teeth, but provided clinically acceptable SBS values.

RESUMO OBJETIVO: o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar in vitro a influência do laser de CO2 sobre a resistência ao cisalhamento da colagem (RCC) no esmalte dentário, usando diferentes tipos de braquetes cerâmicos. MÉTODOS: no total, 60 superfícies de esmalte de incisivos bovinos foram obtidas e aleatoriamente divididas em dois grupos, de acordo com o braquete cerâmico utilizado: Allure (A) e Transcend (T). Cada grupo foi dividido em dois subgrupos (n = 15): L, laser (10W, 3s); C, sem laser, ou controle. Vinte e quatro horas após a colagem dos braquetes com o sistema Transbond XT, foi realizado o teste de resistência ao cisalhamento, com velocidade de 0,5 mm/min, em máquina universal de ensaios mecânicos. Após a descolagem, o Índice de Remanescente de Adesivo (IRA) foi avaliado com aumento de 10X e comparado entre os grupos. Os dados foram analisados pelo ANOVA one-way, testes de Tukey’s, Mann-Whitney’s e Kruskal-Wallis (α = 0,05). RESULTADOS: as médias da RCC em MPa foram: AL = 0,88 ± 0,84; AC = 12,22 ± 3,45; TL = 12,10 ± 5,11; TC = 17,71 ± 6,16. A análise do IRA mostrou que 73% dos corpos de prova apresentaram todo o compósito remanescente aderido à superfície do esmalte (escore 3). O grupo TC apresentou valor significativamente maior de RCC do que os outros grupos. Os corpos de prova dos grupos com laser obtiveram valores adesivos significativamente menores do que os corpos de prova dos grupos sem laser, com ambos os tipos de braquetes. CONCLUSÃO: a irradiação com laser de CO2 diminuiu os valores de RCC dos braquetes policristalinos testados, principalmente do Allure.

The feasibility of implementing magnetic struts into drug-eluting stents (DESs) to mitigate the adverse hemodynamics which precipitate stent thrombosis is examined. These adverse hemodynamics include platelet-activating high wall shear stresses (WSS) and endothelial dysfunction-inducing low wall shear stresses. By magnetizing the stent struts, two forces are induced on the surrounding blood: (1) magnetization forces which reorient red blood cells to align with the magnetic field and (2) Lorentz forces which oppose the motion of the conducting fluid. The aim of this study was to investigate whether these forces can be used to locally alter blood flow in a manner that alleviates the thrombogenicity of stented vessels. Two-dimensional steady-state computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were used to numerically model blood flow over a single magnetic drug-eluting stent strut with a square cross section. The effects of magnet orientation and magnetic flux density on the hemodynamics of the stented vessel were elucidated in vessels transporting oxygenated and deoxygenated blood. The simulations are compared in terms of the size of separated flow regions. The results indicate that unrealistically strong magnets would be required to achieve even modest hemodynamic improvements and that the magnetic strut concept is ill-suited to mitigate stent thrombosis.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this work was to evaluate the effects of several surface treatment methods on the shear bond strengths of metal brackets bonded to a silica-based ceramic with a light-cured adhesive. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Silica-based ceramic (IPS Classic(®)) with glazed surfaces was cut into discs that were used as substrates. A total of 80 specimens were randomly divided into four groups according to the method used: 9.6 % hydrofluoric acid (group 1), 9.6 % hydrofluoric acid (HF) + silane coupling agent (group 2), sandblasting (aluminum trioxide, 50 µm) + silane (group 3), and tribochemical silica coating (CoJet™ sand, 30 µm) + silane (group 4). Brackets were bonded to the treated specimens with a light-cure adhesive (Transbond XT, 3 M Unitek). Shear bond strength was tested after bracket bonding, and the Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) scores were quantified after debonding. RESULTS: Group 4 showed the highest bond strength (12.3 ± 1.0 MPa), which was not significantly different from that of group 3 (11.6 ± 1.2 MPa, P > 0.05); however, the bond strength of group 4 was substantially higher than that of group 2 (9.4 ± 1.1 MPa, P < 0.05). The shear bond strength of group 1 (3.1 ± 0.6 MPa, P< 0.05) was significantly lower than that of the other groups. CONCLUSION: Shear bond strengths exceeded the optimal range of ideal bond strength for clinical practice, except for the isolated HF group. HF acid etching followed by silane was the best suited method for bonding on IPS Classic(®). Failure modes in the sandblasting and silica-coating groups revealed signs of damaged ceramic surfaces.

PURPOSE: The effect of ultraviolet (UV)-riboflavin cross-linking (CXL) has been measured primarily using the strip extensometry technique. We propose a simple and reliable methodology for the assessment of CXL treatment by using an established rheologic protocol based on small amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) measurements. It provides information on the average cross-link density and the elastic modulus of treated cornea samples. METHODS: Three fresh postmortem porcine corneas were used to study the feasibility of the technique, one serving as control and two receiving corneal collagen cross-linking treatment. Subsequently, five pairs of fresh postmortem porcine corneas received corneal collagen cross-linking treatment with riboflavin and UVA-irradiation (370 nm; irradiance of 3 mW/cm2) for 30 minutes (Dresden protocol); the contralateral porcine corneas were used as control samples. After the treatment, the linear viscoelastic moduli of the corneal samples were measured using SAOS measurements and the average cross-linking densities extracted. RESULTS: For all cases investigated, the dynamic moduli of the cross-linked corneas were higher compared to those of the corresponding control samples. The increase of the elastic modulus of the treated samples was between 122% and 1750%. The difference was statistically significant for all tested samples (P = 0.018, 2-tailed t-test). CONCLUSIONS: We report a simple and accurate methodology for quantifying the effects of cross-linking on porcine corneas treated with the Dresden protocol by means of SAOS measurements in the linear regime. The measured dynamic moduli, elastic and viscous modulus, represent the energy storage and energy dissipation, respectively. Hence, they provide a means to assess the changing physical properties of the cross-linked collagen networks after CXL treatment.

The blood serum rheological properties open the door to find suitable radio-protectors and convenient therapy for many cases of radiation exposure. The present study aimed to investigate the rheological properties of rat blood serum at wide range of shear rates after whole body irradiation with different gamma radiation doses in vivo. Healthy male rats were divided into five groups; one control group and 4 irradiated groups. The irradiation process was carried out using Co60 source with dose rate of 0.883cG/sec. Several rheological parameters were measured using Brookfield LVDV-III Programmable rheometer. A significant increase in viscosity and shear stress was observed with 25 and 50Gy corresponding to each shear rate compared with the control; while a significant decrease observed with 75 and 100Gy. The viscosity exhibited a Non-Newtonian behaviour with the shear rate while shear stress values were linearly related with shear rate. The decrease in blood viscosity might be attributed to changes in molecular weight, pH sensitivity and protein structure. The changes in rheological properties of irradiated rats' blood serum might be attributed to destruction changes in the haematological and dimensional properties of rats' blood products.
