MAIN CONCLUSION: Synthetic consortia performed better in promoting Schisandra chinensis growth than individual strains, and this result provides valuable information for the development of synthetic microbial fertilizers. Schisandra chinensis is an herbal medicine that can treat numerous diseases. However, the excessive reliance on chemical fertilizers during the plantation of S. chinensis has severely restricted the development of the S. chinensis planting industry. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) can promote the growth of a wide range of crops, and synthetic consortia of them are frequently superior to those of a single strain. In this study, we compared the effects of four PGPR and their synthetic consortia on S. chinensis growth. The pot experiment showed that compared with the control, synthetic consortia significantly increased the plant height, biomass, and total chlorophyll contents of S. chinensis, and their combined effects were better than those of individual strains. In addition, they improved the rhizosphere soil fertility (e.g., TC and TN contents) and enzyme activities (e.g., soil urease activity) and affected the composition and structure of soil microbial community significantly, including promoting the enrichment of beneficial microorganisms (e.g., Actinobacteria and Verrucomicrobiota) and increasing the relative abundance of Proteobacteria, a dominant bacterial phylum. They also enhanced the synergistic effect between the soil microorganisms. The correlation analysis between soil physicochemical properties and microbiome revealed that soil microorganisms participated in regulating soil fertility and promoting S. chinensis growth. This study may provide a theoretical basis for the development of synthetic microbial fertilizers for S. chinensis.

Cryopreservation has been proven significance as a technique for promising the long-term conservation of plant germplasms. This study aimed to establish a cryopreservation protocol for calli of Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill, and to explore the effects of different process parameters on callus viability. Effects of desiccation duration, cryoprotectants and cryopreservation methods, thawing temperature, and post-culture conditions on the viability of cryopreserved calli were assessed. Among different cryoprotectants and freezing procedures, the highest survival was recorded when the water content of callus after 30 min desiccation was 57.3%, were loaded into a cryoprotectant containing 10% ethylene glycol, 8% glucose, and 10% DMSO, and frozen slowly (-1°C/min). Rapid thawing at 40°C for 2 min demonstrated the best recovery of cryopreserved S. chinensis calli. Post-culturing in darkness for one week before transfer to light conditions (under 16 h photoperiod at 36 µmol·m-2·s-1) was beneficial to callus regeneration. Plants regenerated through somatic embryogenesis from cryopreserved calli remained ploidy stable after cryopreservation. The callus cryopreservation procedure established in this study is a promising tool for the conservation of S. chinensis resources.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of reactive oxygen species on female-male flower ratio of Schisandra chinensis in order to improve the yield. METHODS: Spraying different concentration solution of H2O2, paraquat and sodium dithionite on the leaves of Schisandra chinensis before fruit bud initiation. RESULTS: Exogenous sodium dithionite (O2- carrier) increased the female-male flower ratio greatly from 7.6% to 42.3%. H2O2 and paraquat (OH- carrier) had little effect. CONCLUSION: The regulation effects vary according to different ROS. Exogenous sodium dithionite has the best effect.

American CI-340 portable photosynthesis system was applied to compare the response of the net photosyntheitc rate to the light and the CO2 in Schisandra chinensis form different region and growing situation. The result showed the sample plant from Liaoning had higher light compensate point, higher light saturation point, higher maximum Pn value and higher apparent quantum yield than the sample from Jilin, so it can adapt to the changes of the sunlight in a day better. The weak plant from Jilin had lower light compenstate point, higher light saturation point and higher net photosynthetic rate, so it had stronger availability on light. The stronger one was more sensitive to the weak light. The Jilin sample had higher CE and lower CO2 compensate point compared to that from Liaoning, but when the density of CO2 rised to 240 micromol/mol, the Pn of Schisandra chinensis in Liaoning became much higher than that of Jilin. Under the natural CO2 density condition, the plant from Liaoning had higher photosynthesis ability.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The mutualistic interaction between insects and flowers is considered to be a major factor in the early evolution of flowering plants. The Schisandraceae were, until now, the only family in the ANITA group lacking information on pollination biology in natural ecosystems. Thus, the objective of this research was to document the pollination biology and breeding system of Schisandra henryi. METHODS: Field observations were conducted in three populations of S. henryi and the floral phenology, floral characters and insect activities were recorded. Floral fragrances were sampled in the field and analysed using TCT-GC-MS. Floral thermogenesis was measured with a TR-71U Thermo Recorder. Pollen loads and location of pollen grains on insect bodies (including the gut) were checked with a scanning electron microscope and under a light microscope. KEY RESULTS: Schisandra henryi is strictly dioecious. Male flowers are similar to female flowers in colour, shape, and size, but more abundant than female flowers. The distance between tepals and the androecium or gynoecium is narrow. Neither male nor female flowers are fragrant or thermogenic. Schisandra henryi is pollinated only by adult female Megommata sp. (Cecidomyiidae, Diptera) that eat the pollen grains as extra nutrition for ovary maturation and ovipositing. Both male and female flowers attract the pollinators using similar visual cues and thus the female flowers use deceit as they offer no food. CONCLUSIONS: Schisandra henryi exhibits a specialized pollination system, which differs from the generalized pollination system documented in other ANITA members. Pollen is the sole food resource for Megommata sp. and the female flowers of S. henryi attract pollinators by deceit. This is the first report of predacious gall midges utilizing pollen grains as a food source. The lack of floral thermogenesis and floral odours further enforces the visual cues by reducing attractants for other potential pollinators.
