RESUMO
The Informatics Core of the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative has coordinated data integration and dissemination for a continually growing and complex data set in which both data contributors and recipients span institutions, scientific disciplines, and geographic boundaries. This article provides an update on the accomplishments and future plans.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is developing a Web-based application, Consolidated Renal Operations in a Web-Enabled Network (CROWNWeb), which is designed to facilitate data entry, updating, and retrieval for dialysis facilities nationwide. Part 1 of this three-part series outlines the history of end-stage renal disease and Medicare, and covers the rapid growth of ESRD data management as well as other events that require progression to an online data collection and management system.

Critical care medicine developed out of other subspecialties' need to provide care for their most critically ill patients. Advanced technologies, the understanding of the pathophysiology of critical illness, and the development of the multidisciplinary team have made this care possible. Pediatric critical care medicine emerged in the 1960s and has expanded dramatically since then. The field has made major advances in the areas of lung injury, sepsis, traumatic brain injury, and postoperative care. We review here the evolution of modern pediatric critical care medicine from its roots in general pediatric and cardiac surgery, adult respiratory care medicine, neonatology, and pediatric anesthesiology to its current state as a unique discipline.

As hardware and software for computing have evolved, the latest advances have found eager users in the area of bioprocessing. Accomplishments and their significance can be appreciated by tracing the history and the interplay between the computing tools and the problems that have been solved in bioprocessing.
