As food safety continues to gain prominence, phycocyanin (PC) is increasingly favored by consumers as a natural blue pigment, which is extracted from microalgae and serves the dual function of promoting health and providing coloration. Spirulina-derived PC demonstrates exceptional stability within temperature ranges below 45 °C and under pH conditions between 5.5 and 6.0. However, its application is limited in scenarios involving high-temperature processing due to its sensitivity to heat and light. This comprehensive review provides insights into the efficient production of PC from microalgae, covers the metabolic engineering of microalgae to increase PC yields and discusses various strategies for enhancing its stability in food applications. In addition to the most widely used Spirulina, some red algae and Thermosynechococcus can serve as good source of PC. The genetic and metabolic manipulation of microalgae strains has shown promise in increasing PC yield and improving its quality. Delivery systems including nanoparticles, hydrogels, emulsions, and microcapsules offer a promising solution to protect and extend the shelf life of PC in food products, ensuring its vibrant color and health-promoting properties are preserved. This review highlights the importance of metabolic engineering, multi-omics applications, and innovative delivery systems in unlocking the full potential of this natural blue pigment in the realm of food applications, provides a complete overview of the entire process from production to commercialization of PC, including the extraction and purification.

Phycocyanin, a blue-coloured pigment, predominantly found and derived from Spirulina sp., has gained researchers' interest due to its vibrant hues and other attractive properties like antioxidant and anti-microbial. However, the lack of reliable and sustainable phycocyanin extraction strategies without compromising the quality has hindered the scaling up of its production processes for commercial purposes. Here in this study, phycocyanin was extracted from wet and dry biomass Spirulina sp., using three different physical cell disruption methods (ultrasonication, homogenization, and freeze-thaw cycles) combined with two different buffers (phosphate buffer and acetate buffer) and water (as control). The result showed that the freeze-thaw method combined with acetate buffer produced the highest yield (25.013 ± 2.572 mg/100 mg) with a purity ratio of 0.806 ± 0.079. Furthermore, when subjected to 30% w/v salt stress, 1.9 times higher phycocyanin yield with a purity ratio of 1.402 ± 0.609 was achieved using the previously optimized extraction method.

Microalgae protein holds great potential for various applications in the food industry. However, the current knowledge regarding microalgae protein remains limited, with little information available on its functional properties. Furthermore, the relationship between its molecular structure and functional properties is not well defined, which limits its application in food processing. This study aims to addresses these gaps though an analysis of the emulsibility and foamability of various soluble protein isolates from two species of Spirulina (Arthospira platensis and Spirulina platensis), and the functional properties of Spirulina protein isolates in relation to its molecular structure and charge state. Results revealed that the degree of cross-linking and aggregation or folding and curling of protein tertiary structures was higher in the highly soluble Spirulina protein isolates (AP50% and SP50%) than in the low-solubility isolates (AP30% and SP30%). The foaming capacity (FC) of AP50% and SP50% was found to be lower than that of AP30% and SP30%. Spirulina protein isolates can stably adsorb at the air-water interface for at least 20 min and possessed good interfacial activity. A high pH value was found to promote cross-linking of protein particles at the oil-water interface, thereby reinforcing the internal network structure of emulsions and increasing viscosity. These findings provide preliminary insights for potential applications of Spirulina protein isolates in food production, especially towards quality improvement.

CONTEXT: Recently, prioritize has been given to using natural phytogenic or nano compounds as growth promoters and immunostimulants in fish diets as an alternative to antibiotics. AIMS: The main propose of this trial was to determine the impact of supplementing diets with spirulina or curcumin nanoparticles on the performance and health indicators of Nile tilapia fingerlings. METHODS: In a 56-day feeding trial, 180 tilapia fingerlings were assigned into three main groups, as follows: 1st, control group, 2nd, Spirulina platensis (SP; 5 g kg-1 diet) and 3rd, curcumin nanoparticles (CUR-NPs; 30 mg kg-1 diet). KEY RESULTS: Incorporating tilapia diets with SP or CUR-NPs significantly improved performance, body chemical analysis, blood biochemical and hematological indices, digestive enzyme activities, and antioxidant and immunostimulant features compared to the control. CONCLUSION: Fortified tilapia diets with CUR-NPs or SP efficiently boost the productivity and health of Nile tilapia fingerlings. IMPLICATIONS: The research introduces new practical solutions for applying safe feed additives as alternatives to antibiotics in tilapia farming.

Obesity is one of the most important threats to human health. Besides existing pharmacological or clinical interventions, novel effective and largely available solutions are still necessary. Among diverse natural resources, microalgae are well known for their complexity in the production of novel secondary metabolites. At the same time, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are known for their capacity to metabolize, through fermentation, different matrices, and consequently to modify or produce new compounds with potential bioactivity. This work aimed to study the production of fermented microalgae and cyanobacteria, and to analyse their extracts in the zebrafish Nile red fat metabolism assay. Three microalgal species (Chlorella vulgaris, Chlorococcum sp. and Arthrospira platensis) were fermented with seven strains of LAB from 4 species (Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus, Lacticaseibacillus casei, Lactobacillus delbrueckii bulgaricus and Lacticaseibacillus paracasei), derived from the UPCCO - University of Parma Culture Collection, Parma, Italy). All the selected strains were able to ferment the selected species of microalgae, and the most suitable substrate for LAB growth was Arthrospira platensis. Extracts from fermented Chlorella vulgaris and Chlorococcum sp. reduced significantly the neutral lipid reservoirs, which was not observed without fermentations. The strongest lipid reducing effect was obtained with Arthrospira platensis fermented with Lactobacillus delbrueckii bulgaricus 1932. Untargeted metabolomics identified some compound families, which could be related to the observed bioactivity, namely fatty acids, fatty amides, triterpene saponins, chlorophyll derivatives and purine nucleotides. This work opens up the possibility of developing novel functional foods or food supplements based on microalgae, since lactic acid fermentation enhanced the production of bioactive compounds with lipid reducing activities.

Equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) is a critical endocrine condition in horses, characterized by hyperinsulinemia, hyperlipidemia, and insulin resistance, posing a significant threat to their health. This study investigates the efficacy of supplementing EMS-affected horses with Arthrospira platensis enriched with Cr(III), Mg(II), and Mn(II) ions using biosorption process in improving insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance, reducing inflammation, and mitigating obesity-related fat accumulation. Our results demonstrate that Arthrospira supplementation reduces baseline insulin and glucose levels, contributing to decreased adipose tissue inflammation. Furthermore, Arthrospira supplementation results in a decrease in body weight and improvements in overall body condition scores and cresty neck scores. Additionally, administration of Arthrospira leads to reduced levels of triglycerides and aspartate aminotransferase, indicating a decrease in hepatic adiposity and inflammation. These findings suggest that Arthrospira, enriched with essential micro- and macroelements, can be an advanced feed additive to enhance insulin sensitivity, promote weight reduction, and alleviate inflammatory processes, thereby improving the overall condition of horses affected by EMS. The use of Arthrospira as a feed additive has the potential to complement conventional management strategies for EMS.

BACKGROUND: This investigation assessed the effects of high dietary inclusion of Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) on broiler chicken growth performance, meat quality and nutritional attributes. For this, 120 male broiler chicks were housed in 40 battery brooders (three birds per brooder). Initially, for 14 days, a standard corn and soybean meal diet was administered. Subsequently, from days 14 to 35, chicks were assigned to one of the four dietary treatments (n = 10 per treatment): (1) control diet (CTR); (2) diet with 15% Spirulina (SP); (3) diet with 15% extruded Spirulina (SPE); and (4) diet with 15% Spirulina plus a super-dosing enzymes supplement (0.20% pancreatin extract and 0.01% lysozyme) (SPM). RESULTS: Throughout the experimental period, both SP and SPM diets resulted in decreased final body weight and body weight gain compared to control (p < 0.001), with the SPE diet showing comparable results to CTR. The SPE diet prompted an increase in average daily feed intake (p = 0.026). However, all microalga treatments increased the feed conversion ratio compared to CTR. Dietary inclusion of Spirulina notably increased intestinal content viscosity (p < 0.010), which was mitigated by the SPM diet. Spirulina supplementation led to lower pH levels in breast meat 24 h post-mortem and heightened the b* colour value in both breast and thigh meats (p < 0.010). Furthermore, Spirulina contributed to an increased accumulation of total carotenoids, n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), and saturated fatty acids (SFA), while diminishing n-6 PUFA, thus altering the n-6/n-3 and PUFA/SFA ratios favourably (p < 0.001). However, it also reduced zinc concentration in breast meat (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The findings indicate that high Spirulina levels in broiler diets impair growth due to increased intestinal viscosity, and that extrusion pre-treatment mitigates this effect. Despite reducing digesta viscosity, a super-dosing enzyme mix did not improve growth. Data also indicates that Spirulina enriches meat with antioxidants and n-3 PUFA but reduces α-tocopherol and increases saturated fats. Reduced zinc content in meat suggests the need for Spirulina biofortification to maintain its nutritional value.

BACKGROUND: The study focuses on the global challenge of drought stress, which significantly impedes wheat production, a cornerstone of global food security. Drought stress disrupts cellular and physiological processes in wheat, leading to substantial yield losses, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. The research investigates the use of Spirulina platensis aqueous extract (SPAE) as a biostimulant to enhance the drought resistance of two Egyptian wheat cultivars, Sakha 95 (drought-tolerant) and Shandawel 1 (drought-sensitive). Each cultivar's grains were divided into four treatments: Cont, DS, SPAE-Cont, and SPAE + DS. Cont and DS grains were presoaked in distilled water for 18 h while SPAE-Cont and SPAE + DS were presoaked in 10% SPAE, and then all treatments were cultivated for 96 days in a semi-field experiment. During the heading stage (45 days: 66 days), two drought treatments, DS and SPAE + DS, were not irrigated. In contrast, the Cont and SPAE-Cont treatments were irrigated during the entire experiment period. At the end of the heading stage, agronomy, pigment fractions, gas exchange, and carbohydrate content parameters of the flag leaf were assessed. Also, at the harvest stage, yield attributes and biochemical aspects of yielded grains (total carbohydrates and proteins) were evaluated. RESULTS: The study demonstrated that SPAE treatments significantly enhanced the growth vigor, photosynthetic rate, and yield components of both wheat cultivars under standard and drought conditions. Specifically, SPAE treatments increased photosynthetic rate by up to 53.4%, number of spikes by 76.5%, and economic yield by 190% for the control and 153% for the drought-stressed cultivars pre-soaked in SPAE. Leaf agronomy, pigment fractions, gas exchange parameters, and carbohydrate content were positively influenced by SPAE treatments, suggesting their effectiveness in mitigating drought adverse effects, and improving wheat crop performance. CONCLUSION: The application of S. platensis aqueous extract appears to ameliorate the adverse effects of drought stress on wheat, enhancing the growth vigor, metabolism, and productivity of the cultivars studied. This indicates the potential of SPAE as an eco-friendly biostimulant for improving crop resilience, nutrition, and yield under various environmental challenges, thus contributing to global food security.

The sensory quality of drinking water, and particularly its taste and odor (T&O) is a key determinant of consumer acceptability, as consumers evaluate water by their senses. Some of the conventional treatment processes to control compounds which impart unpleasant T&O have limitations because of their low efficiency and/or high costs. Therefore, there is a great need to develop an effective process for removing T&O compounds without secondary concerns. The primary objective of this study was to assess for the first time the effectiveness of spirulina-based carbon materials in removing geosmin (GSM) and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) from water, two commonly occurring natural T&O compounds. The efficiency of the materials to remove environmentally relevant concentrations of GSM and 2-MIB (ng L-1) from ultrapure and raw water was investigated using a sensitive headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC/MS) method. Moreover, the genotoxic and cytotoxic effects of the spirulina-based materials were assessed for the first time to evaluate their safety and their potential in the treatment of water for human consumption. Based on the results, spirulina-based materials were found to be promising for drinking water treatment applications, as they did not exert geno-cytotoxic effects on human cells, while presenting high efficiency in removing GSM and 2-MIB from water.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of incorporating kefir into the diet on biometric parameters, as well as the immune and antioxidant responses of the carpet shell clam (Ruditapes decussatus) after an experimental infection by Vibrio alginolyticus. Clams were divided into a control group and a treated group. The control group was fed on spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) alone. While, the treated group was fed on spirulina supplemented with 10% dried kefir. After 21 days, clams were immersed in a suspension of V. alginolyticus 5 × 105 CFU mL -1 for 30 min. Seven days after experimental infection, survival was 100% in both groups. The obtained results showed a slight increase in weight and condition index in clams fed with kefir-supplemented diet for 21 days compared to control clams. Regarding antioxidant responses, the treated group showed higher superoxide dismutase activity compared to the control group. However, the malondialdehyde level was lower in the treated clams than in the control. In terms of immune parameters, the treated group showed slightly elevated activities of phenoloxidase, lysozyme and alkaline phosphatase, whereas a decreased lectin activity was observed compared to the control group. The obtained results suggest that kefir enhanced both the antioxidant and immune response of infected clams.

Spirulina platensis can secrete extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) helping to protect damage from stress environment, such as cadmium (Cd2+) exposure. However, the responding mechanism of S. platensis and the secreted EPS to exposure of Cd2+ is still unclear. This research focuses on the effects of Cd2+ on the composition and structure of the EPS and the response mechanism of EPS secretion from S. platensis for Cd2+ exposure. S. platensis can produce 261.37 mg·g-1 EPS when exposing to 20 mg·L-1 CdCl2, which was 2.5 times higher than the control group. The S. platensis EPS with and without Cd2+ treatment presented similar and stable irregularly fibrous structure. The monosaccharides composition of EPS in Cd2+ treated group are similar with control group but with different monosaccharides molar ratios, especially for Rha, Gal, Glc and Glc-UA. And the Cd2+ treatment resulted in a remarkable decline of humic acid and fulvic acid content. The antioxidant ability of S. platensis EPS increased significantly when exposed to 20 mg·L-1 CdCl2, which could be helpful for S. platensis protecting damage from high concentration of Cd2+. The transcriptome analysis showed that sulfur related metabolic pathways were up-regulated significantly, which promoted the synthesis of sulfur-containing amino acids and the secretion of large amounts of EPS.

The possibility of obtaining energy or nutritive streams and bioremediation as an add-on opens new perspectives for the massive culturing of microalgal biomass on waste waters generated by the agro-food sector. Ordinary revenue streams are fully preserved, or even boosted, if they are used in microalgal cultivation; however, the suitability of wastewaters depends on multiple nutritional and toxic factors. Here, the effect of modulating the Olive Mill Wastewater (OMW) and cattle digestate (CD) fraction in the formulation of a growth medium on biomass accumulation and productivity of selected biomass fractions and their relevance for biofuel and/or feed production were tested for the microalga Scenedesmus dimorphus and for the cyanobacterium Arthrospira platensis (Spirulina). Tests highlighted the strong S. dimorphus adaptability to digestate, as on OMW, compared to A. platensis, with the maximum lipid storage (48 %) when culture medium was composed by 50 % of cattle digestate.

Microalgal polysaccharides have received much attention due to their potential value in preventing and regulating oxidative damage. This study aims to reveal the mechanisms of regulating oxidative stress and the differences in the yield, structure, and effect of polysaccharides extracted from three microalgae: Golenkinia sp. polysaccharides (GPS), Chlorella sorokiniana polysaccharides (CPS), and Spirulina subsalsa polysaccharides (SPS). Using the same extraction method, GPS, CPS, and SPS were all heteropoly- saccharides composed of small molecular fraction: the monosaccharides mainly comprised galactose (Gal). Among the three, SPS had a higher proportion of small molecular fraction, and a higher proportion of Gal; thus it had the highest yield and antioxidant activity. GPS, CPS, and SPS all showed strong antioxidant activity in vitro, and showed strong ability to regulate oxidative stress, among which SPS was slightly higher. From the analysis of gene expression, the Nrf2-ARE signalling pathway was an important pathway for GPS, CPS, and SPS to regulate cellular oxidative stress. This study provides a theoretical foundation for further research on the utilization of microalgae polysaccharides and product development.

In recent years, marine natural products have become one of the most important resources of novel lead compounds for critical diseases associated with age. Spirulina, a dietary supplement made from blue-green algae (cyanobacteria: scientific name Arthrospira platensis), is particularly rich in phycocyanin, a phycobiliprotein, which accounts for up to 20% of this cyanobacterium's dry weight and is considered responsible for its anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. Although the anti-aging activity of phycocyanin has been investigated, how exactly this compound works against aging remains elusive. The aim of our research is to use the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model organism to investigate the anti-aging properties of phycocyanin from A. platensis. Our results show that phycocyanin has a powerful anti-aging effect, greatly extending the chronological life span of yeast cells in a dose-dependent way, as the effect was also pronounced when cells were grown in SD medium under calorie restriction conditions (0.2% glucose). Both ROS and accumulation of dead cells were followed by staining chronologically aged cells with dihydrorhodamine 123 (DHR123) and propidium iodide (PI). Interestingly, we found that most of the aged phycocyanin-treated cells, which were unable to form colonies, were actually ROS+/PI-. Finally, we show that the moment in which phycocyanin is added to the culture does not substantially influence its effectiveness in counteracting chronological aging.

Drying is an inseparable part of industrial microalgae production. In this work, the impacts of eight different drying methods on the metabolome and lipidome of Arthrospira platensis were investigated. The studied drying methods were freeze drying (FD), sun drying (SD), air drying at 40 and 75 °C (AD' and AD″), infrared drying at 40 and 75 °C (IRD' and IRD″), and vacuum drying at 40 and 75 °C (VD' and VD″). Results gathered by reversed-phase liquid chromatography separation coupled with high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry with electrospray ionization (RP-LC-ESI-Orbitrap HRMS/MS) analysis allowed researchers to identify a total of 316 metabolites (including lipids) in aqueous and ethanolic extracts. The compounds identified in ethanolic extracts were mainly lipids, such as neutral and polar lipids, chlorophylls and carotenoids, while the compounds identified in the aqueous extracts were mainly amino acids and dipeptides. Among the identified compounds, products of enzymatic and chemical degradation, such as pyropheophytins, monoacylglycerols and lysophosphatidylcholines were also identified and their amounts depended on the drying method. The results showed that except for FD method, recognized as a control, the most protective method was AD'. Contrary to this, VD' and VD″, under the conditions used, promoted the most intense degradation of valuable metabolites.

Objective: Spirulina (arthrospira platensis) is a cyanobacterium proven to have anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antioxidant effects. However, the effect of high-dose Spirulina supplementation on hospitalized adults with COVID-19 is currently unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of high-dose Spirulina platensis for SARS-CoV-2 infection. Study Design: We conducted a randomized, controlled, open-label trial involving 189 patients with COVID-19 who were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to an experimental group that received 15.2g of Spirulina supplement plus standard treatment (44 non-intensive care unit (non-ICU) and 47 ICU), or to a control group that received standard treatment alone (46 non-ICU and 52 ICU). The study was conducted over six days. Immune mediators were monitored on days 1, 3, 5, and 7. The primary outcome of this study was mortality or hospital discharge within seven days, while the overall discharge or mortality was considered the secondary outcome. Results: Within seven days, there were no deaths in the Spirulina group, while 15 deaths (15.3%) occurred in the control group. Moreover, within seven days, there was a greater number of patients discharged in the Spirulina group (97.7%) in non-ICU compared to the control group (39.1%) (HR, 6.52; 95% CI, 3.50 to 12.17). Overall mortality was higher in the control group (8.7% non-ICU, 28.8% ICU) compared to the Spirulina group (non-ICU HR, 0.13; 95% CI, 0.02 to 0.97; ICU, HR, 0.16; 95% CI, 0.05 to 0.48). In non-ICU, patients who received Spirulina showed a significant reduction in the levels of IL-6, TNF-α, IL-10, and IP-10 as intervention time increased. Furthermore, in ICU, patients who received Spirulina showed a significant decrease in the levels of MIP-1α and IL-6. IFN-γ levels were significantly higher in the intervention group in both ICU and non-ICU subgroups as intervention time increased. No side effects related to Spirulina supplements were observed during the trial. Conclusion: High-dose Spirulina supplements coupled with the standard treatment of COVID-19 may improve recovery and remarkably reduce mortality in hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Spirulina (Arthrospira and Spirulina spp.) has always been characterized by the helical trichomes, despite the existence of linear forms. A great debate is now open on the morphological flexibility of Spirulina, but it seems that both trichome morphology and C-phycocyanin (C-PC) concentrations are influenced by the culture conditions.This work compared the effect of some key growth factors (medium pH as well as its carbon, potassium, and salt contents) on the growth and C-PC concentration of helical and linear Spirulina strains. Further, two-phase strategies, including light and nitrogen variation, were applied to increase the in vivo C-PC accumulation into the trichomes. Results showed that high pH induced trichomes elongation and improved growth but decreased C-PC content (+ 65 and + 43% vs. -83 and -49%, for helical and linear strains, respectively). Variations in carbon and salt concentrations negatively impacted growth and C-PC content, even if the linear strain was more robust against these fluctuations. It was also interesting to see that potassium increasing improved growth and C-PC content for both strains.The variation of light wavelength during the enrichment phase (in the two-phase strategy) improved by 50% C-PC accumulation in trichomes, especially after blue lighting for 96 h. Similar result was obtained after 48 h of nitrogen reduction, while its removal from the medium caused trichomes disintegration. The current work highlights the robustness of linear Spirulina strain and presents an efficient and scalable way to increase C-PC in vivo without affecting growth.

Petroleum aromatic hydrocarbons are considered one of the most dangerous aquatic pollutants due to their widespread across water bodies, persistence, and extension to the food chain. To our knowledge, there hasn't been any research investigating the hepatorenoprotective effects of Spirulina platensis (SP) against toxicity induced by these environmental toxicants in fish. Thus, we decided to explore its potential safeguarding against benzene and toluene exposure in adult Clarias gariepinus. To achieve this objective, fish were divided into five groups (60 per group; 20 per replicate). The first group served as a control. The second and third groups were intoxicated with benzene and toluene at doses of 0.762 and 26.614 ng/L, respectively for 15 days. The fourth and fifth groups (SP + benzene and SP + toluene, respectively) were challenged with benzene and toluene as previously mentioned following dietary inclusion of SP at a dose of 5 g/kg diet for 30 days. The marked increase in liver metabolizing enzymes, glucose, total protein, albumin, globulin, albumin/globulin ratio, and creatinine confirmed the hepato- and nephrotoxic impacts of benzene and toluene. These outcomes were coupled with cytopathological affections and excessive collagen deposition. The incorporation of SP in ration formulation, on the contrary, restored the previously mentioned toxicological profile due to its antioxidant and cytoprotective attributes. Regardless of SP intervention, the renal tissues still displayed histo-architectural lesions, because of insufficient dose and timeframe. Additional research will be required to identify the ideal SP remediation regimen.

Excessive consumption of antibiotics is considered one of the top public health threats, this necessitates the development of new compounds that can hamper the spread of infections. A facile green technology for the biosynthesis of Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) using the methanol extract of Spirulina platensis as a reducing and stabilizing agent has been developed. A bunch of spectroscopic and microscopic investigations confirmed the biogenic generation of nano-scaled ZnO with a mean size of 19.103 ± 5.66 nm. The prepared ZnO NPs were scrutinized for their antibacterial and antibiofilm potentiality, the inhibition zone diameters ranged from 12.57 ± 0.006 mm to 17.33 ± 0.006 mm (at 20 µg/mL) for a variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens, also significant eradication of the biofilms formed by Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae by 96.7% and 94.8% respectively was detected. The free radical scavenging test showed a promising antioxidant capacity of the biogenic ZnO NPs (IC50=78.35 µg/mL). Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory role detected using the HRBCs-MSM technique revealed an efficient stabilization of red blood cells in a concentration-dependent manner. In addition, the biogenic ZnO NPs have significant anticoagulant and antitumor activities as well as minimal cytotoxicity against Vero cells. Thus, this study offered green ZnO NPs that can act as a secure substitute for synthetic antimicrobials and could be applied in numerous biomedical applications.

This study investigated the potential use of microalgae as partial cement replacement to heal cracks in cement mortar. Microbially induced calcite (CaCO3) precipitation (MICP) from Arthrospira platensis (A. platensis) (UMACC162) was utilised for crack-healing applications. Microalgae was cultivated in Kosaric Media (KM) together with filtered cement water (FCW), and used as a cement replacement material. The microalgal species was further evaluated for its capacity and adaptability towards large-scale culturing. The results showed that A. platensis could adapt and survive in cement water solution and cement mortar, suggesting the potential for self-healing in cement mortar. Further, the cultured species grown in both conditions (KM and KM & FCW) were harvested and incorporated into the cement mortar as a partial cement replacement material at different levels of 5%, 10%, 20%, and 30% of cement weight. The cement mortars partially replaced with microalgae were cured in water for 28 days. Pre-cracks were induced in the cured mortar with the 75% of their ultimate load. It took just 14 days for the microalgae-incorporated mortar to heal the cracks. The specimens with microalgae cultured in FCW showed a better performance and recovered 59% of their strength, with a maximum healed crack width of 0.7 mm. In terms of water tightness and porosity, they are comparable to the control mortar. The compressive strength measurements indicated the formation of calcite aggregate (crystal) that sealed the surface cracks, which was confirmed by a microstructural analysis. The results also demonstrate that the incorporation of microalgae into cement produced a self-healing effect, providing a new direction for crack healing. Additionally, the investigation indicated that replacing cement with microalgae reduced CO2 emissions by as much as 30%, with a substitution of 30% of microalgae. Exploring microalgae as a cement replacement could reduce carbon emissions and improve the state of the environment.
