ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE:

To determine the association between serum uric acid levels and acute cerebral infarction.

METHODS:

700 patients with acute cerebral infarction were recruited in the study, with 700 healthy individuals serving as controls. Blood samples of the participants were collected to measure uric acid, triglyceride, cholesteral, blood glucose, urea and creatinine. Logistic regression model was established to examine the association between serum uric acid and acute cerebral infarction.

RESULTS:

The patients with acute cerebral infarction had lower levels of serum uric acid than the healthy controls (P <0. 05). The logistic regression model showed that decreased levels of serum uric acid were barely associated with acute cerebral infarction (odds ratio 0. 998, 95% confidence interval 0. 996-1. 000, P<0. 05), after controlling for other confounding factors.

CONCLUSION:

Association between serum uric acid and acute cerebral infarction is not confirmed.
