ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to characterize Staphylococcus pseudintermedius for its antimicrobial resistance and virulence factors with a special focus on methicillin-resistant (MRSP) strains isolated from sick dogs in Lithuania. Clinically sick adult dogs suffering from infections (n=214) and bitches with reproductive disorders (n=36) from kennels were selected for the study. Samples (n=192) from the 250 tested (76.8%) dogs were positive for Staphylococcus spp. Molecular profiling using the species-specific nuc gene identified 51 isolates as S. pseudintermedius (26.6% from a total number of isolated staphylococci) of which 15 isolates were identified as MRSP. Ten MRSP isolates were isolated from bitches with reproductive disorders from two large breeding kennels. Data on susceptibility of S. pseudintermedius to different antimicrobials revealed that all isolates were susceptible to vancomycin, daptomycin and linezolid. Two isolates (3.9%) were resistant to rifampicin. A high resistance was seen towards penicillin G (94.1%), tetracycline (64.7%) and macrolides (68.7%). Resistance to fluoroquinolones ranged from 25.5% (gatifloxacin) to 31.4% (ciprofloxacin). The most prevalent genes encoding resistance included blaZ, aac(6')-Ie-aph(2'')-Ia, mecA, and tet(M). The Luk-I gene encoding a leukotoxin was detected in 29% of the isolates, whereas the siet gene encoding exfoliative toxin was detected in 69% of the S. pseudintermedius isolates. This report of MRSP in companion animals represents a major challenge for veterinarians in terms of antibiotic therapy and is a concern for both animal and public health.

ABSTRACT

The objectives of this research were to highlight the main factors, which have relevant significance for etiology of myopathies and to assess the incidence of myopathies in a representative population of broilers raised in Lithuania. Eighteen flocks were evaluated to assess the incidence of musculus pectoralis major myopathies (PMM) (total 54,000 broilers) and dorsal cranial myopathy (DCM) (total 124,200 broilers). Thirteen flocks (total 19,500 broilers) were evaluated to find out deep pectoral myopathy (DPM) occurrence in Lithuania. Investigated parameters of each flock were: average broiler live body weight (BW) at slaughter, average slaughter age, treatment and seasons. A correlation analysis was used to measure the strength of the linear relationship between the investigated traits and incidence of these myopathies. Overall, the incidence of PMM in Lithuania was 18.19%. DCM and DPM were 5.16% and 0.27%, respectively. The percentage of PMM in flocks was strongly associated with average broiler live BW at slaughter (r=0.898, p<0.001) and age at slaughter (r=0.693, p<0.001). The percentage of PMM in flocks was negatively related with treatment of broilers (rs=-0.535, p<0.05). The percentage of DCM was positively associated with average broiler live BW at slaughter (r=0.537, p<0.05) and with seasons (rs=0.658, p<0.01). However, our study results revealed, that the analyzed parameters are not so important in DPM etiology. Furthermore, predisposing factors of PMM, DCM and DPM are different. These findings suggest that not only broiler's heavy weight and age at slaughter could have influence for etiology of myopathies.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of feed supplements with alfa-amylase and beta-glucanase (Optipartum C+ 200) on ingestive-related behaviour biomarkers registered with real-time sensors: rumination behaviours and reticulorumen parameters (pH and temperature). Cows (n=20) in the treatment group (TG) were fed with Optipartum C+ 200 (Enzymes feed supplement: Alfa-Amylase 57 Units; Beta-Glucanase 107 Units) from 21 days before calving until 30 days after calving with a feeding rate of 200 g/cow/day. Cows (n=22) in the control group (CG) were fed a feed ration without feed supplement. Measurements started from 6 days before calving and continued until 21 days after calving. The following indicators were registered: with the RumiWatch System: Rumination time; Eating time; Drinking time; Rumination chews; Eating chews; Drinking gulps; Bolus; Chews per minute; Chews per bolus. With the SmaXtec system: the temperature, pH of the contents of the cows' reticulorumens, and cows' walking activity. According to our results, feed supplementation with alfa-amylase and beta-glucanase (Optipartum C+ 200) in the TG group resulted in increases in the following parameters: 9% rumination time and eating time, 19% drinking time, 11% rumination chews, 16% eating chews, 13% number of boluses per rumination, 5% chews per minute and 16% chews per bolus. The rumination time showed a strong, positive relation with rumination chews and bolus indicators in both groups (TG and CG) (p⟨0.001); while the rumination time in both groups of cows showed an opposite direction and was negatively related to eating time and eating chews (p⟨0.05). We found a 1.28 % lower reticulorumen pH and a 0.64 % lower reticulorumen temperature in cows fed with the supplement compared with cows in the control group. Cows in TG were 8.80% more active than those in the CG group. For improvement of ingestive-related behaviour we suggest adding a feed supplement with alfa-amylase and beta-glucanase (Optipartum C+ 200).
