ABSTRACT

The magnitude of the orbital magnetic moment and its role as a trigger of the Verwey transition in the prototypical Mott insulator, magnetite, remain contentious. Using 1s2p resonant inelastic x-ray scattering angle distribution (RIXS-AD), we prove the existence of noncollinear orbital magnetic ordering and infer the presence of dynamical distortion creating a polaronic precursor for the metal to insulator transition. These conclusions are based on a subtle angular shift of the RIXS-AD spectral intensity as a function of the magnetic field orientation. Theoretical simulations show that these results are only consistent with noncollinear magnetic orbital ordering. To further support these claims we perform Fe K-edge x-ray magnetic circular dichroism in order to quantify the Fe average orbital magnetic moment.

ABSTRACT

The VIolation of Pauli exclusion principle -2 experiment, or VIP-2 experiment, at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso searches for X-rays from copper atomic transitions that are prohibited by the Pauli exclusion principle. Candidate direct violation events come from the transition of a 2p electron to the ground state that is already occupied by two electrons. From the first data taking campaign in 2016 of VIP-2 experiment, we determined a best upper limit of [Formula: see text] for the probability that such a violation exists. Significant improvement in the control of the experimental systematics was also achieved, although not explicitly reflected in the improved upper limit. By introducing a simultaneous spectral fit of the signal and background data in the analysis, we succeeded in taking into account systematic errors that could not be evaluated previously in this type of measurements.

ABSTRACT

The susceptibility of B. alexandrina to infection with S. mansoni miracidia varies due to biological & ecological parameters. In case of snail infection in less than 4 or 5 months productivity doubled between 1 and 2 miracidium, but with more than 2 miracidia with practically no increase in productivity. In more than 5 months, there no was discernible difference in productivity between monomiracidial and polymiracidial infections. The production of cercariae was characterized by very irregular daily emissions and by the alternation of periods of high and low emissions, which gave rise to a production rhythm.

ABSTRACT

A total of 70 women with complicated pregnancy and 20 ones with normal pregnancy were selected. They were all RH positive and free from syphilis, brucellosis and malignany. Both groups were subjected to detection of anti-Toxoplasma antibodies levels by the indirect haemagglutination tests (IHAT-IgG) and by ELISA (IgG and IgM). The results showed that all controls (normal pregnancy) were IHA-IgG and ELISA-IgM negative. However, two of the controls (10%) were ELISA. IgG positive. As to the women with complicated pregnancy 68/70 or 97.1% were IHAT positive. When using ELISA, 57/70 or 81.4% were IgG positive and 42/70 or 60% were IgM positive. The results revealed a significant difference between the complicated cases and controls. The diagnosis of abortion, stillbirth, premature labour, or neonatal death due to Toxoplasma infection needs careful and laborious evaluation. The use of ELISA (IgG & IgM) is a must, as it is more sensitive and specific than IHAT.
