ABSTRACT

A survey was conducted of deaf children in the Glasgow area diagnosed between 1965 and 1979 to assess the relative incidences of the known aetiological factors. This took the form of a review of case records supplemented by the use of questionnaires. The results showed small variations from earlier published figures but were broadly similar. The effectiveness of rubella and anti-Rhesus immunization were also evaluated. It was found that more than half of all cases of profound deafness in childhood are acquired rather than inherited and are therefore potentially preventable.

ABSTRACT

A two-part prospective trial of the use of bipolar diathermy for haemostasis in tonsillectomy was carried out. The first part of the trial showed that bipolar diathermy was as effective as conventional methods of dealing with bleeding, and has no additional undesirable effects. The second part showed that the method could substantially reduce operating time.

ABSTRACT

Skin closure using continuous nylon sutures was compared with closure using interrupted nylon sutures in 105 consecutive patients undergoing laparotomy. Particular note was made of wound healing and wound infection. The incidence of wound infection was similar (3.9 per cent and 3.7 per cent respectively) and all wounds healed satisfactorily. The continuous method was quicker and cheaper.
