ABSTRACT
A preliminary microbiological survey, conducted in the Italian national airlines Catering Department is reported. Precooked,, frozen meals reheated on medium and long distance flights were examined. The results indicate that hygiene standards are satisfactorily maintained. The presence of staphylococcus aureus in some samples highlights the importance of preventive and prophylactic measures in healthy carriers. In view of the growing concern about Salmonella poisoning in airline passengers the absence of this bacterium is extremely satisfying.

Experience in the field of influenza (vaccination, chemical prevention, clinical pictures, treatment) during the period 1964-1974 is briefly described. The possibility that certain gastroenteric syndromes may suitably be labelled as"influenza" is examined. The usefulness of EAI antibody determination in "a posteriori" differential diagnosis of certain clinical forms, the assessment of the value of vaccination, and for mediocolegal purposes is asserted. It is suggested, in the light of personal experience, that vaccination with virus strains involved at the outset of an epidemic will only be useful where the antibody response to such strains is equal to more than 1:80. The chemical prevention of the disease is briefly examined, though the view that it is only effective in special cases is maintained.

An account of the effects of recent influenza epidemics is given from the medical standpoint, and also with respect to their social and economic repercussions. The part played by air travel in the carriage of such epidemics is also examined. The immunity of the population of Rome towards an A strain swine fever (A/New Jersey 8/76) is assessed in the light of personal research.

From the autumn 1978 to the spring 1979 an epidemiological inquiry was set up concerning samplings of sera of 1648 adult of different ages and of both sexes. It was noticed a contemporaneous presence of A/Texas/1/77(H3N2) and A/USSR/90/77(H1N1) viruses; it was found a larger frequency of the last subtype in the individuals born after 1957. During the winter 1978/1979 it was also noticed an overlap of B influenza virus.
