ABSTRACT

Introduction Nasoseptal flap is widely used in reconstruction of the skull base to prevent cerebrospinal fluid leakage after surgery for skull base lesions. There has been a debate on whether more severe olfactory dysfunction occurs after nasoseptal flap elevation than the conventional trans-sphenoidal approach. Objective To compare the long-term recovery patterns associated with nasoseptal flap and the conventional trans-sphenoidal approach. Methods The subjects were divided into the conventional trans-sphenoidal approach group and the nasoseptal flap elevation group. We followed up self-reported olfactory score using the visual analogue scale and threshold discrimination identification (TDI) score of the Korean Version of the Sniffin Stick test II for 12 months, with olfactory training. Results The study included 31 patients who underwent the trans-sphenoidal approach. Compared with preoperative status, the mean visual analogue scale and TDI scores in the conventional trans-sphenoidal approach group recovered 2 months postoperatively, while in the nasoseptal flap elevation group the visual analogue scale and TDI scores recovered 6 months and 3 months after surgery, respectively. Twelve months after surgery, the visual analogue scale and TDI scores in the conventional trans-sphenoidal approach group were 9.3 ± 0.5 and 28.5 ± 4.3, while those from the nasoseptal flap elevation group were 8.9 ± 1.5 and 27.2 ± 4.7 ( p = 0.326; 0.473). Only one of the patients in the nasoseptal flap elevation group had permanent olfactory dysfunction. Conclusion The olfactory function recovered more gradually in the nasoseptal flap elevation group than in the conventional trans-sphenoidal approach group, but there was no difference between the two groups after 6 months.

ABSTRACT

Pure (a-Si:H) and methylated [a-Si0.95(CH3)0.05:H] amorphous silicon thin films were analyzed by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry after partial lithiation. Depth profiling gives insights into the lithiation mechanism of the material, enabling us to study the detailed biphasic process in the first lithiation process. Lithiation induces swelling and roughening of the active layer. In both a-Si:H and a-Si0.95(CH3)0.05:H, no measurable Li diffusion was observed after stopping current-induced lithiation. After applying the same lithiation charges, distinct Li profiles were observed for these two materials. Unlike a-Si:H, the Li concentration drops slowly from the heavily lithiated region to the non-lithiated region in a-Si0.95(CH3)0.05:H. This apparent progressive transition between the lithiated and lithium-free regions is attributed to the presence of nanovoids inside the material. When their concentration is high enough, these nanovoids constitute favorable quasi-percolating paths for lithium during the first lithiation. A specific model was developed to simulate the Li depth profiles, fully supporting this hypothesis.

ABSTRACT

Tungsten disulfide (WS2) quantum dots (QDs) embedded in polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) based flexible memristive devices were prepared, and those devices exhibited typical bistable electrical switching and remarkable nonvolatile memristive behaviors. Maximum electricity ON/OFF ratio obtained from the current-voltage (I-V) curves of the device is close to 104. The set voltage of the device is +0.7 V, which effectively reduced the energy consumption. The retention times extracted from data for the devices were as large as 1 × 104 s, which points to these devices having nonvolatile characteristics. Moreover, the highly flexible characteristics of the devices were demonstrated by bending the devices. The carrier transport mechanisms were explained by fitting the I-V curves, and possible operating mechanisms of the devices can be described based on the electron trapping and detrapping processes. WS2 QDs uniformly dispersed in pure transparent N, N-Dimethylformamide (DMF) were obtained by using ultrasonication and a hydrothermal process in this work.

ABSTRACT

A synaptic device that functionally mimics a biological synapse is a promising candidate for use as an electronic element in a neuromorphic system. In this study, flexible electronic synaptic devices based on poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA):CdSe/CdZnS core-shell quantum-dot (QD) nanocomposites are demonstrated. The current-voltage characteristics for the synaptic devices under consecutive voltage sweeps show clockwise hysteresis, which is a critical feature of an artificial synaptic device. The effect of the CdSe/CdZnS QD concentration on the device performance is studied. The flexible electronic synaptic devices under bending show the similar and stable electrical performances. The memory retention measurements show that the e-synapse exhibits long-term potentiation and depression. The carrier transport mechanisms are analyzed, and thermionic emission and space-charge-limited-current conduction are found to be dominant.

ABSTRACT

In this study, the amount of cement used in a concrete mix is minimized to reduce the toxic effects on users by adjusting the concrete mixture contents. The reduction of cement is achieved by using various admixtures (ground granulated blast-furnace slag, flyash, ordinary Portland cement, and activated Hwangtoh powder). To apply the mix to construction, material property tests such as compressive strength, slump, and pH are performed. Preliminary experimental results showed that the Hwangtoh concrete could be used as a healthy construction material. Also, the health issues and effects of Hwangtoh mortar are quantitatively evaluated through an animal clinical test. Mice are placed in Hwangtoh mortar and cement mortar cages to record their activity. For the test, five cages are made with Hwangtoh and ordinary Portland cement mortar floors, using Hwangtoh powder replacement ratios of 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80% of the normal cement mortar mixing ratio, and two cages are made with Hwangtoh mortar living quarters. The activity parameter measurements included weight, food intake, water intake, residential space selection, breeding activity, and aggression. The study results can be used to evaluate the benefits of using Hwangtoh as a cement replacing admixture for lifestyle, health and sustainability.

ABSTRACT

In order to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and produce an eco-friendly construction material, a type of concrete that uses a minimal amount of cement, yet still retains equivalent properties to ordinary cement concrete, has been developed and studied all over the world. Hwangtoh, a type of red clay broadly deposited around the world, has traditionally been considered an eco-friendly construction material, with bonus advantages of having health and cost benefits. Presently, Hwangtoh is not commonly used as a modern construction material due to properties such as low strength and high rates of shrinkage cracking. Recent studies, however, have shown that Hwangtoh can be used as a mineral admixture to improve the strength of concrete. In addition, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibers recycled from PET bottle waste can be used to control shrinkage cracks in Hwangtoh concrete. Therefore, in this study, performance verification is conducted on newly developed Hwangtoh concrete mixed with short recycled PET fibers. The results show that Hwangtoh concrete has compressive strength, elastic modulus, and pH properties that are similar to these features in ordinary cement concrete. The properties of carbonation depth and creep strain of Hwangtoh concrete, however, are larger and smaller, respectively, than in ordinary cement concrete. According to flexural tests, reinforced concrete (RC) specimens cast with Hwangtoh admixtures (with and without PET fibers) possess similar or better capacities than ordinary RC specimens. The addition of PET fibers significantly improves the structural ductility of RC specimens under normal environmental conditions. However, the implementations of the concrete in aggressive environment must be carefully considered, since a previous study result indicates degradation of its durability performance in aggressive environments, such as seawater [1]. The results of this study validate the possibility of using eco-friendly Hwangtoh concrete reinforced with recycled PET fibers as a structural material for modern construction.

ABSTRACT

In 1945, many Koreans, in addition to Japanese, were killed or injured by the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. This study compared the biological profiles of Korean atomic bomb survivors in residence at Daegu and Kyungbuk, Republic of Korea with those of a representative sample of Koreans obtained during a similar period. We evaluated anthropometric measurements, blood pressure, blood cell counts, blood chemistry, and urinalysis of survivors (n=414) and age- and sex-matched controls (n=414) recruited from the third Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted in 2005. Univariate analyses revealed significantly higher systolic blood pressure, white blood cell count, and serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, and aspartate aminotransferase levels (p<0.01) in the survivors. Conversely, hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit, red blood cell count, and the proportion of positive urine occult blood (p<0.01) were lower in the survivors. Our findings suggest that biological profiles of Korean atomic bomb survivors were adversely affected by radiation exposure.
