ABSTRACT

Enhancing the intrinsic stability of perovskite and through encapsulation to isolate water, oxygen, and UV-induced decomposition are currently common and most effective strategies in perovskite solar cells. Here, the atomic layer deposition process is employed to deposit a nanoscale (≈100 nm), uniform, and dense Al2O3 film on the front side of perovskite devices, effectively isolating them from the erosion caused by water and oxygen in the humid air. Simultaneously, nanoscale (≈100 nm) TiO2 films are also deposited on the glass surface to efficiently filter out the ultraviolet (UV) light in the light source, which induces degradation in perovskite. Ultimately, throughthe collaborative effects of both aspects, the stability of the devices is significantly improved under conditions of humid air and illumination. As a result, after storing the devices in ambient air for 1000 h, the efficiency only declines to 95%, and even after 662 h of UV exposure, the efficiency remains at 88%, far surpassing the performance of comparison devices. These results strongly indicate that the adopted Al2O3 and TiO2 thin films play a significant role in enhancing the stability of perovskite solar cells, demonstrating substantial potential for widespread industrial applications.

ABSTRACT

Environment and energy are two key issues in today's society. In terms of environmental protection, the treatment of phytoremediation residues has become a key problem to be solved urgently, while for energy storage, it tends to utilize low-cost and high specific energy storage materials (i.e. porous carbon). In this study, the phytoremediation residues is applied to the storage materials with low-cost and high specific capacity. Firstly, the phosphorous acid assisted pyrolysis of oilseed rape stems from phytoremediation is effective in the removal of Zn, Cu, Cd and Cr from the derived biochar. Moreover, the derived biochar from phytoremediation residues shows abundant porous structure and polar groups (-O/-P/-N), and it can deliver 650 mAh g-1with 3.0 mg cm-2sulfur, and keeps 80% capacity after 200 cycles when employing it as a sulfur host for lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Hence, phosphorous acid assisted pyrolysis and application in Li-S battery is a promising approach for the disposal of phytoremediation residues, which is contributed to the environmental protection as well as energy storage.

BACKGROUND: Currently, there is no consistent understanding of the relationship between depression and sleep quality in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This study aimed to explore the correlation between depression and sleep quality in SLE patients. METHODS: Five English (PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and CINAHL) databases were systematically searched from inception to January 12, 2021. Two authors independently screened publications and extracted data according to set inclusion and exclusion criteria. Statistical analyses were performed with STATA 16.0. Data were pooled using a random-effects model. RESULTS: A total of 9 identified studies matched the inclusion criteria, reporting on 514 patients with SLE in the analysis. A moderate correlation of depression with sleep quality was found (pooled r = 0.580 [0.473, 0.670]). Compared to good sleepers, patients with SLE and poor sleep quality had higher levels of depression (standardized mean difference = - 1.28 [- 1.87, - 0.69]). Depression was associated with subjective sleep quality (r = 0.332 [0.009, 0.592]), sleep latency (r = 0.412 [0.101, 0.649]), sleep disturbances (r = 0.405 [0.094, 0.645]), daytime dysfunction (r = 0.503 [0.214, 0.711]), the four dimensions of Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), while no significant correlation was found in the other three PSQI dimensions. CONCLUSION: Depression had a moderate correlation with sleep quality in patients with SLE. Patients with poor sleep quality tended to have higher level of depression than that of good sleepers. Awareness of the correlation may help rheumatology physicians and nurses to assess and prevent depression and improve sleep quality in patients with SLE.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in unprecedented levels of social isolation which has negatively impacted older patients in particular on multiple levels. We present a case of an older patient with several complex psychosocial issues who was hospitalized and died from COVID-19. The social isolation required during the pandemic compounded patient and family stressors and diminished the patient's access to clinicians and to his usual support network and coping strategies. We describe how technology and tele-palliative care were utilized to reconnect the patient with clinicians and family and to provide clinical care that enhanced coping skills and support. Using telemedicine to restructure the approach to care was crucial in improving multiple domains of care and can be considered a resource for caring for older adults, especially during the challenging times brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Pneumomediastinum (PnM) is a rare but life-threatening complication of DM. The present study aims to characterize the long-term prognosis and prognostic factors of DM-associated PnM. METHODS: Inpatients with DM-associated PnM were retrospectively enrolled from two tertiary referral centres for rheumatic disease. The enrolled patients were divided into survivors or non-survivors. Information about the demographics, clinical manifestations, CT scan features, laboratory findings and outcomes were collected from their medical records. A least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regularized Cox regression model was used to select the most relevant factors. Prognosis was analysed using a Kaplan-Meier curve. A Cox proportional hazards model was used to identify independent predictive factors for long-term survival. RESULTS: A total of 62 patients (26 women) with DM-associated PnM were enrolled. The mean age was 44.3 years (s.d. 11.7). The median follow-up duration was 17 days (quartiles 7, 266.5). Thirty-five patients died during follow-up. The survival rates were 75.4% at 1 week, 46.2% at 3 months and 41.9% at 1 year. The Cox proportional hazards model identified the development of fever [hazard ratio (HR) 3.23 (95% CI 1.25, 8.35), P = 0.02] and a decrease in the number of lymphocytes [HR 2.19 (95% CI 1.10, 4.39), P = 0.03] as independent risk factors for death. CONCLUSION: The results suggest poor overall survival among patients with DM-associated PnM. Survival during the first 3 months is crucial for long-term survival. Meanwhile, the development of fever and a decrease in the number of lymphocytes were associated with long-term mortality. Early recognition and prompt treatment of this high-risk group of DM patients is therefore important.

ABSTRACT

An ionic liquid-based headspace in-tube liquid-phase microextraction (IL-HS-ITLPME) in-line coupled with capillary electrophoresis (CE) is proposed. The method is capable of quantifying trace amounts of phenols in environmental water samples. In the newly developed method, simply by placing a capillary injected with IL in the HS above the aqueous sample, volatile phenols were extracted into the IL acceptor phase in the capillary. After extraction, electrophoresis of the phenols in the capillary was carried out. Extraction parameters such as the extraction time, extraction temperature, ionic strength, volume of the sample solution and IL types were systematically investigated. Under the optimized conditions, enrichment factors for four phenols were from 1510 to 1985. The proposed method provided a good linearity, low limits of detection (below 5.0 ng mL-1 ), and good repeatability of the extractions (RSDs below 6.7%, n = 6). This method was then utilized to analyze two real environmental samples of Xiaoxi Lake and tap water, obtaining acceptable recoveries and precisions. Compared with the usual HS-ITLPME for CE, IL-HS-ITLPME-CE is a simple, low-cost, fast and environmentally friendly pre-concentration technique. This article is protected by copyright. ABSTRACT

Bacteria are subjected to sub-minimal inhibitory concentrations (sub-MIC) of antibiotics in various niches where the low-dosage treatment plays a key role in antibiotic resistance selection. However, the mechanism of sub-MIC of antibiotics on the resistant gene transfer is largely unknown. Here, we used Escherichia coli SM10λpir in which the RP4 plasmid was chromosomally-integrated as the donor strain, to investigate the effects of sub-MIC of Ciprofloxacin(Cip) or Levofloxacin(Lev) on conjugational transfer of mobilisable plasmid-pUCP24T from SM10λpir to Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The results showed that the transfer frequency was significantly increased by treating E. coli with sub-MIC of Cip or Lev. To investigate the molecular mechanisms, complete transcriptome sequencing was performed. We found that the sub-MIC of Cip or Lev enhanced the expression of several genes on the RP4 plasmid, which was consistent with the conjugation efficiency. Moreover, the expression of genes associated with SOS response in donor SM10λpir was increased, but had no correlation with conjugation efficiency. These findings suggested that sub-MIC of Cip or Lev may promote conjugational transfer by up-regulating the expression of conjugation associated genes via an SOS-independent mechanism.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the effect of home-based lower limb resistance training (LLRT) in patients with stable COPD. BACKGROUND: Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) in COPD patients has been substantially investigated, but the rehabilitation components differ among studies. Few works have focused on home-based LLRT. Furthermore, few studies have assessed muscle strength and functional status by isokinetic/isometric extensor muscle peak torque (PT) and five-repetition sit-to-stand test (FTSST), respectively. DESIGN: A randomised controlled design was adopted. METHODS: (i) The home-based LLRT consisted of six sets of lower limb training cycles by self-gravity resistance and Thera-band resistance at 8-12RM, 20-30 min/session and 3 sessions/week for 12 weeks. (ii) The intervention group (n = 25) received routine PR guidance and home-based LLRT, whereas the control group (n = 22) received routine PR guidance only. The muscle strengths, FTSST durations, 6-min walking distances (6MWDs) and COPD assessment test results at enrolment and week 12 were compared. RESULTS: Relative to the baseline findings, all the indexes of muscle strength (isometric extensor muscle PT, isometric extensor muscle PT to body weight ratio [PT/BW], isokinetic extensor muscle PT and isokinetic extensor muscle PT/BW) did not significantly change in the intervention group. Meanwhile, no significant intragroup difference was noted among the indexes of muscle strength (except for isometric extensor muscle PT) in the control group. The FTSST decrease was significant between and within groups. By contrast, the 6MWD significantly increased within both groups, but not between the groups. The COPD assessment tool score decreased significantly within the intervention group. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with routine PR guidance, home-based LLRT can improve not only the muscle strength and exercise endurance but also the lower limb functional status. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: Our developed home-based LLRT intervention is simple, safe and feasible in stable COPD patients and could hence be promoted in clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To describe experiences and nursing needs of school-age Chinese children undergoing lumbar puncture for the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. BACKGROUND: Lumbar puncture is an invasive procedure, causing psychological changes and physical discomfort in patients. In a previous study, it was proved that distraction intervention, such as music therapy, relieves pain and anxiety. There is limited evidence regarding the experience and needs of school-age children during lumbar puncture after being diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. To minimise their anxiety and pain during the procedure, it is important to collect information directly from these children. DESIGN: A descriptive qualitative research. METHODS: Twenty-one school-age children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia participated in semi-structured interviews at a Children's Hospital in China. Data were collected by an experienced and trained interviewer. Qualitative content analysis was chosen to describe experiences of children undergoing lumbar puncture. RESULTS: While undergoing lumbar puncture for the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, school-age Chinese children experienced complex psychological feelings (fear, tension, helplessness, sadness and anxiety). They also experienced physical discomfort. They had multipolar needs, such as information, communication, respect, self-actualisation, environment and equipment. CONCLUSIONS: This study identified important areas that must be closely monitored by healthcare staff, performing lumbar puncture on acute lymphoblastic leukaemia children. Thus, a successful and smooth procedure can be performed on these patients, and their quality of life can be improved. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: The experiences described in this study contribute to a better understanding of the needs of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia children undergoing lumbar puncture. They also provide valuable information to professional medical care staff that develops future nursing assessments.

ABSTRACT

Astrocytomas are the most common intramedullary spinal cord tumors in pediatric and adolescent patients and the incidence decreases with age. Spinal oligoastrocytoma, which is a mixed glioma with distinct astrocytic and oligodendroglial components, is an extremely rare pathology of the spinal cord. To authors' best of knowledge, there are only 7 spinal oligoastrocytomas reported in the English literature. Here, the authors report a patient of a pathologically confirmed spinal oligoastrocytoma, who presented with severe left leg pain and numbness. This patient reminds us of the rarity of spinal oligoastrocytoma, and the treatment and prognosis were also investigated and reviewed.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To translate a disease-specific anxiety questionnaire on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and test its reliability and validity in China. Patients and Methods: The German version of the revised COPD Anxiety Questionnaire (CAF-R) was initially validated using step-by-step translation, back-translation, and cross-cultural adaptation. The reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the CAF-R (CAF-R-CN) were tested among 448 patients with COPD (mean age =71.42±9.33 years, 17.2% female) from four medical institutions in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, using convenience sampling, from April 2022 to June 2023. Results: The CAF-R-CN included six dimensions with a total of 25 items. The item-level content validity index was 0.860-1.000; the scale-level content validity index was 0.920. The structural validity χ2/df was 2.326, the root mean square error of approximation was 0.077, the comparative fit index was 0.924, and the Tucker-Lewis index was 0.912. The six-dimensional internal consistency index Cronbach's α coefficient was 0.696-0.910, and the test-retest reliability was 0.949. An optimal cut-off score of 50.5 was selected with a sensitivity of 0.786 and specificity of 0.870. Conclusion: The CAF-R-CN had satisfactory reliability and validity and can be used to identify and assess anxiety in COPD patients with a Chinese cultural background.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of somatosensory interactive games in combination with pulmonary rehabilitation programs (PRPs) on exercise tolerance, balance function, pulmonary function, inflammatory markers, and healthcare utilization in individuals with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease over 12 months. Design: In a randomized controlled trial, 80 patients were divided into two groups. The control group participated in a lasted 30 minutes daily program composed of postural training for 10 minutes, limb movement for 10 minutes, and breathing exercises for 10 minutes based on regular oxygen therapy and medication. The experimental group received a once-daily, 20-minute somatosensory interactive game session based on the control group. Patients began treatment within 48 hours after admission and lasted for 6 weeks. Results: The time × group interactions on 6-minute walk distance (6MWD) and Brief Balance Evaluation Systems Test (Brief-BESTest) between the two groups were significant (P < 0.001). At the postintervention and each time point of follow-up, the 6-minute walk distance (6MWD) and Brief-BESTest of the intervention group were significantly higher than those of the control group (P < 0.05). The effects of time factor on forced expiratory volume in one second and forced vital capacity were statistically significant (P < 0.05). The 6MWD and Brief-BESTest of the intervention group peaked 3 months after the intervention and were higher than the control group within 12 months. C-reactive protein and procalcitonin were similar between the groups before and after intervention (P > 0.05). The readmission rates and mean length of time spent in the hospital were comparable between the groups at 12 months (P > 0.05). Conclusions: The addition of somatosensory interactive games based on a PRP was safe and feasible, and this benefit persisted for 12 months, peaked at 3 months after the intervention, and then gradually decreased.

Background: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is the most common benign disease causing voiding dysfunction in middle-aged and elderly men. the current "gold standard" for surgical treatment is transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). Continuous bladder irrigation (CBI) is routinely given for 3 to 5 days after operation. However, this may induce bladder spasm. Bladder spasm not only brings physical and mental pain to patients, delaying the postoperative recovery process, but it also increases the medical economic burden. Therefore, it is important to take active measures to effectively warn and deal with bladder spasm. The color of the drainage fluid is an important indicator and requires close observation during CBI, as it can reflect real-time postoperative bleeding. When the color of drainage fluid is abnormal, effective measures should be undertaken. Grading nursing intervention divides patients into different conditions according to their possible changes, and then recommends targeted nursing intervention. Existing studies have formulated CBI programs from the perspective of quantifying the relationship between drainage fluid color and irrigation speed, but have yet to incorporate bladder spasm prevention and control levels or design corresponding grading nursing intervention programs according to different drainage fluid colors. This study aimed to construct the risk warning classification and intervention plan of bladder spasm under the guidance of CBI speed adjusting card after TURP. Methods: Based on the rate adjustment card of CBI after TURP, we formulated the first draft of an early warning classification of risk in bladder spasm and its intervention plans by combining methods suggested from a literature search with semi-structured interviews and results from 2 rounds of correspondence inquiries with 28 experts by the Delphi method. We further screened and revised grading standards and measures. Results: The positive coefficients of experts in 2 rounds of correspondence inquiries were both 100%, the authority coefficients were both 0.952, and the Kendall harmony coefficients were 0.238 and 0.326, respectively (P<0.01). In the second round of correspondence inquiries, the coefficient of variation of expert opinions was 0.000-0.154, and the coefficient of variation of all items was <0.25. Finally, a 3-level risk warning classification standard and 23 nursing measures for CBI complicated by bladder spasm was constructed. Conclusions: The early warning classification of risk in bladder spasm and its intervention plans guided by rate adjustment card of CBI after TURP are scientific and feasible, and can provide a basis and guidance for effective and standardized CBI in patients after TURP.

Across social species, the presence of another individual can reduce stress reactions to adverse stimuli, a phenomenon known as social buffering. The present study investigated whether social buffering influences the expression and extinction of learned fear in adolescence, a developmental period of diminished fear inhibition and increased social interaction. Quality of maternal care and degree of social investigation were examined as factors that may influence social buffering. In adolescence, male rats were fear conditioned and then given extinction training either in the presence of a same-age rat or alone. Animals were then tested alone for extinction retention. In two experiments, the presence of a conspecific robustly reduced conditioned fear responses during extinction training. Interestingly, a persistent social buffering effect was observed when the extinction and conditioning contexts had prominent differences in features (Experiment 1), but not when these contexts were relatively similar (Experiment 2). Neither quality of maternal care nor degree of social investigation predicted the effects of social buffering. These findings suggest that social buffering robustly dampens fear responses during adolescence when a peer is present and this suppression can persist, in some instances, even when the peer is absent.

ABSTRACT

Tailoring surface composition and coordinative environment of catalysts in a nano-meter region often influence their chemical performance. It is reported that CoP exhibits a low dissociation ability of H-OH, originating from the poor desorption of intermediate species. Herein, we provide a feasible method to construct P-Fe2O3-CoP nanosheets through a gas-phase phosphorization process. P doping induces the formation of interfacial structure between Fe2O3 and CoP and the generation of defective structures. The resulting P-Fe2O3-CoP nanosheets afford high freshwater/seawater oxidation activity (250/270 mV@10 mA/cm2) in 1 mol/L (M) KOH, which is even lower than commercial RuO2. Compared with CoP||CoP, P-Fe2O3||P-Fe2O3, and Co3O4||Co3O4, the assembled P-Fe2O3-CoP||P-Fe2O3-CoP exhibits the superior water/seawater electrolysis performance with 1.61/1.65 V@10 mA/cm2. The synergistic effect of P doping, defective structure, and heterojunction leads to high water oxidation efficiency and water splitting efficiency.

ABSTRACT

The interaction of zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) is an important research direction in the prevention and control of Cd pollution of wheat in recent years. In this study, a typical wheat field in North China was selected as the object to explore the control effect and application risk of Zn fertilizer on Cd pollution in a soil-wheat system through field experiments. The results showed that under the treatment of a low dosage of Zn, the Cd concentrations in wheat grains in Jiyuan City and Kaifeng City decreased by 33.4% and 25.3% compared with those in the control, respectively. By contrast, Cd concentrations in wheat grains treated with a high dosage of Zn increased by 22.4% and 34.2% compared with that of the low-dosage Zn treatment. After the application of Zn, the total amount and available Zn concentrations increased significantly, and Cd was partially activated in these two locations. Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) showed that when the Zn concentrations in the soils were less than 200 mg·kg-1, soil Zn was the main factor affecting Cd accumulation in the soil-wheat system, whereas when Zn concentrations in soils were greater than 200 mg·kg-1, the activation of soil Cd was the main factor affecting Cd accumulation in wheat grains. Regression analysis showed that when the soil Cd/Zn ratio decreased to 0.0089 (low dosage of Zn), Zn and Cd showed an antagonistic effect, whereas when the soil Cd/Zn ratio decreased to 0.0078 (high dosage of Zn), Zn and Cd showed a synergistic effect. According to the characteristics of regional Cd pollution, adjusting the amount of Zn fertilizer can improve the efficiency of pollution control and avoid aggravating the harm of Cd pollution.

ABSTRACT

This study evaluated the interrater reliability, convergent and divergent validity, incremental validity, and clinical prognostic utility of the Clinical Assessment of Prosocial Emotions (CAPE; Frick, 2013) for assessing limited prosocial emotions (LPE). Participants were 232 young children (Mage = 3.94 years, SD = 1.46, range = 2-8; 74.6% boys) clinic-referred for conduct problems. We scored the CAPE using binary and dimensional scoring approaches and measured outcomes using parent-report and child laboratory measures. CAPE LPE symptom ratings had good interrater reliability. Children diagnosed with pretreatment LPE had more severe externalizing problems and lower empathy than children without LPE but did not differ in emotion recognition accuracy or anxiety. Dimensional CAPE symptom sum scores were associated with criterion variable scores in expected ways and offered incremental validity beyond scores on the parent-report Inventory of Callous-Unemotional Traits for predicting conduct problem severity, aggression, empathy deficits, and global emotion recognition accuracy. Among children who completed parent management training (n = 44), those diagnosed with LPE ended treatment with more severe aggressive behavior than those without LPE. Overall, children diagnosed with CAPE LPE have severe externalizing problems and achieve reduced benefits from standard parent management training, supporting the need for tailored and intensive interventions to maximize treatment outcomes. BACKGROUND: Haloxyfop-P-methyl, an acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase)-inhibiting herbicide, has been extensively used to control grass weeds. Widespread use of haloxyfop-P-methyl in cotton fields in China has led to the development of glutathione transferase (GST)-mediated resistance in Digitaria sanguinalis. An RNA-seq analysis identified DsGSTU1, a tau class glutathione transferase from the D. sanguinalis transcriptome as a potential candidate. Here, we cloned DsGSTU1 from D. sanguinalis young leaf tissues and subsequently characterized DsGSTU1 by a combination of sequence analysis, as well as functional heterologous expression in rice. RESULTS: The full-length coding DNA sequence (CDS) of DsGSTU1 is 717 bp in length. Higher DsGSTU1 expression was observed in haloxyfop-P-methyl-resistant (HR) D. sanguinalis than in haloxyfop-P-methyl-susceptible (HS) plants. Overexpression of the DsGSTU1 gene was confirmed by transformation into the wild-type (WT) Nipponbare rice with pBWA(V)HS, a recombinant expression vector. GST activity in transgenic rice seedlings was 1.18-1.40-fold higher than the WT rice seedlings before and after haloxyfop-P-methyl treatment, respectively. Additionally, transgenic rice seedlings overexpressing DsGSTU1 were less sensitive to haloxyfop-P-methyl. CONCLUSION: Our combined findings suggest that DsGSTU1 is involved in metabolic resistance to haloxyfop-P-methyl in D. sanguinalis. A better understanding of the major genes contributing to herbicide-resistant D. sanguinalis facilitates the development of resistance management strategies for this global invasive grass weed. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

ABSTRACT

Mindfulness training among patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) reduces symptoms, prevents relapse, improves prognosis, and is more efficient for those with a high level of trait mindfulness. Upon hospital admission, 126 MDD patients completed the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), World Health Organization Quality of Life Brief, Five-Factor Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), and the Rumination Response Scale (RRS). The 65 patients that scored less than the median of all subjects on the FFMQ were placed into the low mindfulness level (LML) group. The other 61 patients were placed in the high mindfulness level (HML) group. All facet scores were statistically different between the mental health assessment scores of the HML and LML groups except for RRS brooding and FFMQ nonjudgement. Trait mindfulness level exhibited a negative and bidirectional association with MDD severity primarily through the facets of description and aware actions. Trait mindfulness was also related positively with age primarily through the facets of nonreactivity and nonjudgement. Being married is positively associated with trait mindfulness levels primarily through the facet of observation and by an associated increase in perceived quality of life. Mindfulness training prior to MDD diagnosis also associates positively with trait mindfulness level. Hospitalized MDD patients should have their trait mindfulness levels characterized to predict treatment efficiency, help establish a prognosis, and identify mindfulness-related therapeutic targets.
