ABSTRACT

One of the current challenges in the development of flame retardants is the preparation of an environmentally friendly multi-element synergistic flame retardant to improve the flame retardancy, mechanical performance, and thermal performance of composites. This study synthesized an organic flame retardant (APH) using (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (KH-550), 1,4-phthalaadehyde, 1,5-diaminonaphthalene, and 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) as raw materials, through the Kabachnik-Fields reaction. Adding APH to epoxy resin (EP) composites could greatly improve their flame retardancy. For instance, UL-94 with 4 wt% APH/EP reached the V-0 rating and had an LOI as high as 31.2%. Additionally, the peak heat release rate (PHRR), average heat release rate (AvHRR), total heat release (THR), and total smoke produced (TSP) of 4% APH/EP were 34.1%, 31.8%, 15.2%, and 38.4% lower than EP, respectively. The addition of APH improved the mechanical performance and thermal performance of the composites. After adding 1% APH, the impact strength increased by 15.0%, which was attributed to the good compatibility between APH and EP. The TG and DSC analyses revealed that the APH/EP composites that incorporated rigid naphthalene ring groups had higher glass transition temperatures (Tg) and a higher amount of char residue (C700). The pyrolysis products of APH/EP were systematically investigated, and the results revealed that flame retardancy of APH was realized by the condensed-phase mechanism. APH has good compatibility with EP, excellent thermal performance, enhanced mechanical performance and rational flame retardancy, and the combustion products of the as-prepared composites complied with the green and environmental protection standards which are also broadly applied in industry.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, Ag-Metal-organic framework loaded chitosan nanoparticles (0.1%Ag@MOF/1.5%CSNPs) and polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate/chitosan (PACS) were used as the upper and lower layers to successfully prepare a bilayer composite dressing for wound healing. The performance of bilayer dressing was evaluated. The lower layer (PACS) had uniform pore size distribution, good water retention, swelling, water vapor permeability, and biocompatibility while PACS had almost no antibacterial activity. The upper layer (Ag@MOF/CSNPs) possessed excellent antibacterial activity and poor biocompatibility. As the upper layer, it can avoid direct contact with the skin and inhibit microbial invasion. In addition, the bilayer can adhere to a large number of red blood cells and platelets, promoting blood coagulation and cell proliferation. Ag@MOF, CSNPs, Ag@MOF/CSNPs and bilayer showed antibacterial activity in ascending order, due to the synergistic antibacterial action of the upper and lower layer. In vivo evaluation showed that both bilayer and PACS could significantly accelerate the wound healing, and the bilayer dressing showed more complete re-epithelialization with less inflammatory cells. In summary, this new bilayer composite is an ideal dressing for accelerating wound healing.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, polyvinyl alcohol/starch composite films with p-coumaric acid modified chitosan (P-CS) and chitosan nanoparticles (P-CSNPs) at different concentrations were successfully prepared. The films were compared for their mechanical, thermal, physical, antioxidant, antibacterial, cytotoxicity and optical barrier properties. The results suggested that P-CS could significantly increase the tensile strength (TS) of the film from 15.67 MPa to a maximum of 24.32 MPa. The compact structure of P-CSNPs film prevented water diffusion, reducing the water amount within. Both films showed a reduction in water solubility, the extent of swelling, and water vapor transmittance. Specifically, P-CSNPs films showed better thermal stability while P-CS films revealed higher antioxidant activity. Besides, the P-CS films exhibited excellent transparency and good ultraviolet-barrier at 200-280 nm. P-CSNPs films demonstrated higher antibacterial activity on both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Additionally, P-CS films were less cytotoxic compared to P-CSNPs films.

ABSTRACT

To improve sulfuric acid recovery from sodium sulfate wastewater, a lab-scale bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED) process was used for the treatment of simulated sodium sulfate wastewater. In order to increase the concentration of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) generated during the process, a certain concentration of ammonium sulfate solution was added into the feed compartment. To study the influencing factors of sulfuric acid yield, we prepared different concentrations of ammonium sulfate solution, different feed solution volumes, and different membrane configurations in this experiment. As it can be seen from the results, when adding 8% (NH4)2SO4 into 15% Na2SO4 under the experimental conditions where the current density was 50 mA/cm2, the concentration of H2SO4 increased from 0.89 to 1.215 mol/L, and the current efficiency and energy consumption could be up to 60.12% and 2.59 kWh/kg, respectively. Furthermore, with the increase of the volume of the feed compartment, the concentration of H2SO4 also increased. At the same time, the configuration also affects the final concentration of the sulfuric acid; in the BP-A-C-BP ("BP" means bipolar membrane, "A" means anion exchange membrane, and "C" means cation exchange membrane; "BP-A-C-BP" means that two bipolar membranes, an anion exchange membrane, and a cation exchange membrane are alternately arranged to form a repeating unit of the membrane stack) configuration, a higher H2SO4 concentration was generated and less energy was consumed. The results show that the addition of the double conjugate salt is an effective method to increase the concentration of acid produced in the BMED process.

ABSTRACT

ZIF-8 nanoparticle-doped polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-S-MC films were prepared via casting method. The effect of different concentrations of ZIF-8 on the physical properties and structural characterization of the films were investigated. The results indicated that ZIF-8 could increase the water resistance and mechanical property of the membrane. Through FTIR, scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), and TGA analysis, it was found that ZIF-8 changed the phenomenon of macromolecule agglomeration and improved the thermal stability of the membrane. The breathable behavior of the film was also studied through oxygen permeability and water vapor permeability analysis. The result illustrated that the breathability of the film improved significantly by adding ZIF-8. The maximum reached when the weight ratio of ZIF-8 was 0.01 wt %. The property expands the application of PVA/starch blend film in the postharvest technology of fruits and vegetables.
