ABSTRACT

We report complex behaviors in the phase evolution of transition-metal dichalcogenide IrTe_{2} thin flakes, captured with real-space observations using scanning Raman microscopy. The phase transition progresses via growth of a small number of domains, which is unlikely in statistical models that assume a macroscopic number of nucleation events. Consequently, the degree of phase evolution in the thin flakes is quite variable for the selected specimen and for a repeated measurement sequence, representing the emergence of complexity in the phase evolution. In the ∼20-µm^{3}-volume specimen, the complex phase evolution results in the emergent coexistence of a superconducting phase that originally requires chemical doping to become thermodynamically stable. These findings indicate that the complexity involved in phase evolution considerably affects the physical properties of a small-sized specimen.

ABSTRACT

Skyrmions, topologically protected nanometric spin vortices, are being investigated extensively in various magnets. Among them, many structurally chiral cubic magnets host the triangular-lattice skyrmion crystal (SkX) as the thermodynamic equilibrium state. However, this state exists only in a narrow temperature and magnetic-field region just below the magnetic transition temperature Tc, while a helical or conical magnetic state prevails at lower temperatures. Here we describe that for a room-temperature skyrmion material, ß-Mn-type Co 8Zn 8Mn 4, a field-cooling via the equilibrium SkX state can suppress the transition to the helical or conical state, instead realizing robust metastable SkX states that survive over a very wide temperature and magnetic-field region. Furthermore, the lattice form of the metastable SkX is found to undergo reversible transitions between a conventional triangular lattice and a novel square lattice upon varying the temperature and magnetic field. These findings exemplify the topological robustness of the once-created skyrmions, and establish metastable skyrmion phases as a fertile ground for technological applications.

ABSTRACT

We report the pressure study of a doped organic superconductor with a Hall coefficient and conductivity measurements. We find that maximally enhanced superconductivity and a marginal-Fermi liquid appear around a certain pressure where mobile carriers increase critically, suggesting a possible quantum phase transition between strongly and weakly correlated regimes. This observation points to the presence of a criticality in Mottness for a doped Mott insulator with tunable correlation.

ABSTRACT

Polystyrenes with various end groups were analyzed by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS). These end groups were obtained by termination of the active anionic group by sulfonate or chlorosilane derivatives. Characteristic end group fragments for each sulfonate derivative were observed. On the one hand, for PS capped by methyl sulfonate, or -(CH(2))(4)-O-SO(2)-CH(3), almost complete end group fragment is observed at m/z 95 and a [O-SO(2)-CH(3)](-) molecular structure. On the other hand, when PS is terminated by silyl methyl sulfonate, or -Si(CH(3))(2)-(CH(2))(3)-O-SO(2)-CH(3), the most characteristic fragment in the fingerprint secondary ion mass spectrum is located at m/z 153 with [Si(CH(3))(2)-O-SO(2)-CH(3)](+) and the complete end group peak, [Si(CH(3))(2)-(CH(2))(3)-O-SO(2)-CH(3)](+), at m/z 201, is absent. According to the molecular structure, characteristic end group secondary ions can be emitted as complete or rearranged fragments. Various silylalkyl alcohol or sulfonate functionalities are analyzed and fragmentation pathways are discussed. To our knowledge, this is the first time that such rearrangement at silyl functions has been observed and demonstrated in fingerprint secondary ion mass spectra. ABSTRACT

To investigate efficacy of mezlocillin (MZPC) in the treatment of biliary tract infection, the time course concentrations of MZPC in the bile of patients with, in particular, liver dysfunction were measured. MZPC concentrations in the bile decreased with the increase in the severity of liver dysfunction. However, the bile concentration was maintained more than 50 micrograms/ml even in cases of severe cholangitis with obstructive jaundice. These results indicate that MZPC is an useful antibiotic for the treatment of biliary tract infection.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cell-to-cell interactions between mast cells and activated T cells are increasingly recognized as a possible mechanism in the aetiology of allergic or non-allergic inflammatory disorders. To determine the anti-allergic effect of fisetin, we examined the ability of fisetin to suppress activation of the human mast cell line, HMC-1, induced by activated Jurkat T cell membranes. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: HMC-1 cells were incubated with or without fisetin for 15 min and then co-cultured with Jurkat T cell membranes activated by phorbol-12-myristate 13-acetate for 16 h. We determined gene expression in activated HMC-1 cells by DNA microarray and quantitative reverse transcription (RT)-PCR analysis. We also examined activation of the transcription factor NF-kappaB and MAP kinases (MAPKs) in activated HMC-1 cells. KEY RESULTS: Fisetin suppresses cell spreading and gene expression in HMC-1 cells stimulated by activated T cell membranes. Additionally, we show that these stimulated HMC-1 cells expressed granzyme B. The stimulatory interaction also induced activation of NF-kappaB and MAPKs; these activations were suppressed by fisetin. Fisetin also reduced the amount of cell surface antigen CD40 and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) on activated HMC-1 cells. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Fisetin suppressed activation of HMC-1 cells by activated T cell membranes by interfering with cell-to-cell interaction and inhibiting the activity of NF-kappaB and MAPKs and thereby suppressing gene expression. Fisetin may protect against the progression of inflammatory diseases by limiting interactions between mast cells and activated T cells.

ABSTRACT

Nonlinear polymer topologies composed of cyclic and branched polymer segments are systematically classified by reference to constitutional isomerism in a series of alkanes (CnH2n+2), monocycloalkanes (CnH2n), and polycycloalkanes (CnH2n-2, CnH2n-4, etc). Thus, the total number of chain ends (termini) and of branch points (junctions) are maintained as invariant parameters, as well as the number of branches at each junction and the connectivity of junction. On the other hand, the distance between two adjacent junctions and that between the junction and terminus are taken as variant parameters. On the basis of the classification of polymer topologies, a novel synthetic strategy by an "electrostatic self-assembly and covalent fixation" technique has been proposed to construct a variety of topologically unique polymer architectures.
