RESUMEN

A series of enantiopure chiral NH2/SO palladium complexes have been synthesised with high yields by treating the corresponding tert-butylsulfinamide/sulfoxide derivatives with Pd(CH3CN)2Cl2. The enantiopure chiral ligands were prepared by stereoselective addition of tert-butyl or phenyl methylsulfinyl carbanions to different tert-butylsulfinylimines. In all cases, coordination occurs with concomitant desulfinylation. X-ray studies of the Pd complexes showed a higher trans influence of the phenylsulfinyl group in comparison to that of the tert-butylsulfinyl group. Furthermore, we have obtained and characterised two possible palladium amine/sulfonyl complexes, epimers at sulfur, resulting from N-desulfinylation and coordination of palladium with both oxygens of the prochiral sulfonyl group. The catalytic activity and enantioselectivity of the new Pd(II) complexes of acetylated amine/tert-butyl- and phenylsulfoxides in the carboxylated cyclopropanes arylation reaction has been studied, obtaining the best results with the phenylsulfoxide ligand 25(SC,SS) that produced the final arylated product in a 93 :7 enantiomeric ratio.

RESUMEN

Reduction of nitrous oxide (N2O) with H2 to N2 and water is an attractive process for the decomposition of this greenhouse gas to environmentally benign species. Herein, a series of iridium complexes based on proton-responsive pincer ligands (1-4) are shown to catalyze the hydrogenation of N2O under mild conditions (2 bar H2/N2O (1:1), 30 °C). Among the tested catalysts, the Ir complex 4, based on a lutidine-derived CNP pincer ligand having nonequivalent phosphine and N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) side donors, gave rise to the highest catalytic activity (turnover frequency (TOF) = 11.9 h-1 at 30 °C, and 16.4 h-1 at 55 °C). Insights into the reaction mechanism with 4 have been obtained through NMR spectroscopy. Thus, reaction of 4 with N2O in tetrahydrofuran-d8 (THF-d8) initially produces deprotonated (at the NHC arm) species 5NHC, which readily reacts with H2 to regenerate the trihydride complex 4. However, prolonged exposure of 4 to N2O for 6 h yields the dinitrogen Ir(I) complex 7P, having a deprotonated (at the P-arm) pincer ligand. Complex 7P is a poor catalytic precursor in the N2O hydrogenation, pointing out to the formation of 7P as a catalyst deactivation pathway. Moreover, when the reaction of 4 with N2O is carried out in wet THF-d8, formation of a new species, which has been assigned to the hydroxo species 8, is observed. Finally, taking into account the experimental results, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to get information on the catalytic cycle steps. Calculations are in agreement with 4 as the TOF-determining intermediate (TDI) and the transfer of an apical hydrido ligand to the terminal nitrogen atom of N2O as the TOF-determining transition state (TDTS), with very similar reaction rates for the mechanisms involving either the NHC- or the P-CH2 pincer methylene linkers.

RESUMEN

Metal complexes incorporating proton-responsive ligands have been proved to be superior catalysts in reactions involving the H2 molecule. In this contribution, a series of IrIII complexes based on lutidine-derived CNNH pincers containing N-heterocyclic carbene and secondary amino NHR [R = Ph (4a), tBu (4b), benzyl (4c)] donors as flanking groups have been synthesized and tested in the dehydrogenation of ammonia-borane (NH3BH3, AB) in the presence of substoichiometric amounts (2.5 equiv) of tBuOK. These preactivated derivatives are efficient catalysts in AB dehydrogenation in THF at room temperature, albeit significantly different reaction rates were observed. Thus, by using 0.4 mol % of 4a, 1.0 equiv of H2 per mole of AB was released in 8.5 min (turnover frequency (TOF50%) = 1875 h-1), while complexes 4b and 4c (0.8 mol %) exhibited lower catalytic activities (TOF50% = 55-60 h-1). 4a is currently the best performing IrIII homogeneous catalyst for AB dehydrogenation. Kinetic rate measurements show a zero-order dependence with respect to AB, and first order with the catalyst in the dehydrogenation with 4a (-d[AB]/dt = k[4a]). Conversely, the reaction with 4b is second order in AB and first order in the catalyst (-d[AB]/dt = k[4b][AB]2). Moreover, the reactions of the derivatives 4a and 4b with an excess of tBuOK (2.5 equiv) have been analyzed through NMR spectroscopy. For the former precursor, formation of the iridate 5 was observed as a result of a double deprotonation at the amine and the NHC pincer arm. In marked contrast, in the case of 4b, a monodeprotonated (at the pincer NHC-arm) species 6 is observed upon reaction with tBuOK. Complex 6 is capable of activating H2 reversibly to yield the trihydride derivative 7. Finally, DFT calculations of the first AB dehydrogenation step catalyzed by 5 has been performed at the DFT//MN15 level of theory in order to get information on the predominant metal-ligand cooperation mode.

RESUMEN

The cationic complex [(JohnPhos-Au)3 (acetylide)][SbF6 ] (JohnPhos=(2-biphenyl)di-tert-butylphosphine, L1) has been characterised structurally and features an acetylide-trigold(I)-JohnPhos system; the trinuclear-acetylide unit, coordinated to the monodentate bulk phosphines, adopts an unprecedented µ,η1 ,η2 ,η1 coordination mode with an additional interaction between distal phenyl rings and gold centres. Other cationic σ,π-[(gold(I)L1)2 ] complexes have also been isolated. The reaction of trimethylsilylacetylene with various alcohols (iPrOH, nBuOH, n-HexOH) catalysed by cationic [AuI L1][SbF6 ] complexes in CH2 Cl2 at 50 °C led to the formation of acetaldehyde acetals with a high degree of chemo- and regioselectivity. The reaction mechanism was studied, and several organic and inorganic intermediates have been characterised. A comparative study with the analogous cationic [CuI L1][PF6 ] complex revealed different behaviour; the copper metal is lost from the coordination sphere leading to the formation of cationic vinylphosphonium and copper nanoparticles. Additionally, a new catalytic approach for the formation of this high-value cationic vinylphosphonium has been established.

RESUMEN

A straightforward method for the preparation of trisphosphinite ligands in one step, using only commercially available reagents (1,1,1-tris(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethane and chlorophosphines) is described. We have made use of this approach to prepare a small family of four trisphosphinite ligands of formula [CH3C{(C6H4OR2)3], where R stands for Ph (1a), Xyl (1b, Xyl = 2,6-Me2-C6H3), iPr (1c), and Cy (1d). These polyfunctional phosphinites allowed us to investigate their coordination chemistry towards a range of late transition metal precursors. As such, we report here the isolation and full characterization of a number of Au(I), Ag(I), Cu(I), Ir(III), Rh(III) and Ru(II) homotrimetallic complexes, including the structural characterization by X-ray diffraction studies of six of these compounds. We have observed that the flexibility of these trisphosphinites enables a variety of conformations for the different trimetallic species.

RESUMEN

The experimental and computational characterization of a series of dialkylterphenyl phosphines, PR2 Ar' is described. The new P-donors comprise five compounds of general formula PR2 Ar Dtbp 2 (R=Me, Et, iPr, c-C5 H9 and c-C6 H11 ); Ar Dtbp 2 = 2,6-C6 H3 -(3,5-C6 H3 -(CMe3 )2 )2 ), and another five PR2 Ar' phosphines containing the bulky alkyl groups iPr, c-C5 H9 or c-C6 H11 , in combination with Ar'=Ar Xyl 2 , Ar Xyl ' 2 , or Ar Ph 2 (L1-L10). Steric and electronic parameters have been determined computationally and from IR and X-ray data obtained for the phosphines and for some derivatives, including tricarbonyl and dicarbonyl nickel complexes, Ni(CO)3 (PR2 Ar') and Ni(CO)2 (PR2 Ar'). In the solid state, the free phosphines PR2 Ar' adopt one of the three possible structures formally related by rotation around the Cipso -P bond. Details on their relative energies and on the influence of the free phosphine structure on its coordination chemistry towards Ni(CO)n (n = 2, 3) fragments has been obtained by experimental and computational methods.

RESUMEN

A novel family of dipropargylamines has been synthesised in one pot through a double catalytic A3 -coupling of five components. Cationic [AuI -L][SbF6 ] complexes (L=JohnPhos) are extremely active catalysts for the double A3 -coupling of primary amines (aliphatic or aromatic), formaldehyde and trimethylsilylacetylene. Several reactions of LAu-amine complexes with organic reagents were studied and followed by NMR and HRMS (ESI) analyses, providing information about the reaction mechanism. Specifically, the role of the π-gold(I) acetylide complexes as active catalyst species was firmly confirmed. Most of the intermediates of this five-component coupling were identified by GC-MS spectrometry, lending support to the mechanistic proposal. In some cases, cationic amine-gold(I)-L complexes corresponding to the activated reagent or intermediate were isolated and characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, their spectroscopic properties were recorded, and their catalytic activity evaluated. Protic solvents influence the course of the reaction by effecting the double deprotection of dipropargylamines, providing a convenient route to dipropargylamines with double-deprotected silyl moieties. When NaOH is present in the reaction media, formation of cationic acetylide-dipropargylamine gold(I) and neutral hydroxide LAuOH complexes, respectively, as high and less active intermediate catalyst forms occur.

RESUMEN

Three helicenes based on a borylated arylisoquinoline skeleton have been prepared in their enantiopure forms and characterized with respect to their photophysical properties, including the use of chiroptical spectroscopies. The dyes show varying charge-transfer characteristics and efficient emission (quantum yields between 0.13 and 0.30, in toluene), which is governed by the electron-donor substitution (p-MeO-phenyl, p-Me2 N-phenyl) at the helicene. Marked differences in the emission wavelength and Stokes shift are observed, with the dimethylamino-substituted derivative emitting most red-shifted (maximum at ca. 590 nm) and displaying the highest Stokes shift (ca. 6000 cm-1 ) in toluene. The helicenes show electronic circular dichroism (ECD) and significant circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with dissymmetry factors of up to 3.5×10-3 . The sign of the ECD band corresponding to the first transition and of the CPL spectrum depend sensibly on the electron-donor substitution.

RESUMEN

The interplay between noncovalent interactions that involve oxygenated heteroaromatic rings have been studied for the first time in this work. In particular, we report an advance in knowledge-based anion-π interactions together with (C-H)+ ⋅⋅⋅anion contacts. To understand how the anion modulates these interactions, the synthesis of pyrylium salts with a variety of anions was performed by using an anionic metathesis methodology. The synthesized pyrylium complexes were classified in series, for example, anions derived from halogens, from oxoacids, from p-block elements, and from transition metals. Crystallographic data, DFT calculations, and NMR spectroscopy methods provided access to an overall insight into the noncovalent behavior of the anion in this kind of system. Based on the DFT calculations and 1 H NMR spectroscopy, pyrylium protons can be used as chemical tags to detect noncovalent interactions in this type of compound.

RESUMEN

The parallel synthesis of a 26-membered-library of aromatic/aliphatic-(thio)urea-linked pyrrolizidines followed by in situ biological evaluation toward α-galactosidases has been carried out. The combination of the (thio)urea-forming click reaction and the in situ screening is pioneer in the search for glycosidase inhibitors and has allowed the discovery of a potent coffee bean α-galactosidase inhibitor (IC50 = 0.37 µM, Ki = 0.12 µM) that has also showed inhibition against human lysosomal α-galactosidase (α-Gal A, IC50 = 5.3 µM, Ki = 4.2 µM).

RESUMEN

We report the synthesis and structural characterization of five-coordinate complexes of rhodium and iridium of the type [(η5-C5Me5)M(N^N)]+ (3-M+), where N^N represents the aminopyridinate ligand derived from 2-NH(Ph)-6-(Xyl)C5H3N (Xyl = 2,6-Me2C6H3). The two complexes were isolated as salts of the BArF anion (BArF = B[3,5-(CF3)2C6H3]4). The M-Namido bond of complexes 3-M+ readily activated CO, C2H4, and H2. Thus, compounds 3-M+ reacted with CO under ambient conditions, but whereas for 3-Rh+, CO migratory insertion was fast, yielding a carbamoyl carbonyl species, 4-Rh+, the stronger Ir-Namido bond of complex 3-Ir+ caused the reaction to stop at the CO coordination stage. In contrast, 3-Ir+ reacted reversibly with C2H4, forming adduct 5-Ir+, which subsequently rearranged irreversibly to [Ir](H)(═C(Me)N(Ph)-) complex 6-Ir+, which contains an N-stabilized carbene ligand. Computational studies supported a migratory insertion mechanism, giving first a ß-stabilized linear alkyl unit, [Ir]CH2CH2N(Ph)-, followed by a multistep rearrangement that led to the final product 6-Ir+. Both ß- and α-H eliminations, as well as their microscopic reverse migratory insertion reactions, were implicated in the alkyl-to-hydride-carbene reorganization. The analogous reaction of 3-Rh+ with C2H4 originated a complex mixture of products from which only a branched alkyl [Rh]C(H)(Me)N(Ph)- (5-Rh+) could be isolated, featuring a ß-agostic methyl interaction. Reactions of 3-M+ with H2 promoted a catalytic isomerization of the Ap ligand from classical κ2-N,N' binding to κ-N plus η3-pseudoallyl coordination mode.

RESUMEN

Silver(I) promotes the highly chemoselective N-amidation of tertiary amines under catalytic conditions to form aminimides by nitrene transfer from PhI═NTs. Remarkably, this transformation proceeds in a selective manner in the presence of olefins and other functional groups without formation of the commonly observed aziridines or C-H insertion products. The methodology can be applied not only to rather simple tertiary amines but also to complex natural molecules such as brucine or quinine, where the products derived from N-N bond formation were exclusively formed. Theoretical mechanistic studies have shown that this selective N-amidation reaction proceeds through triplet silver nitrenes.

RESUMEN

Tremorine and precursors of gemini surfactants were synthesised in a one-pot, three-step, double-catalytic A3 coupling reaction and characterised by structural and spectroscopic methods. The cationic [AuI (L1)]SbF6 complex is a more active catalyst compared to neutral L2- and L3-AuI bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imidate complexes (L1, L2=Buchwald-type biaryl phosphane; L3=triphenylphosphine) in promoting the double A3 coupling of ethynyltrimethylsilane, secondary amines (cyclic, aliphatic, or aromatic) and formaldehyde. The solvent influences the catalytic performance by desilylation of silyl acetylene or deactivation of the catalyst by a halide anion. Acetylide-bridged cationic digold(I) L1 and L2 complexes were isolated and characterised by means of single-crystal X-ray structure analysis and their spectroscopic properties. Iodine in the acetylene reagent deactivates the AuI catalyst by formation of the less active iodido-bridged cationic digold(I) L1 complex, which was fully characterised by single-crystal X-ray crystal structure analysis and spectroscopy. The nature of the phosphine ligand of the gold complexes used as catalyst affects the stability and activity of the formed cationic ethynyl-bridged AuI2 -L intermediates, isolation of which lends support to the proposed double A3 coupling mechanism.

RESUMEN

Members of a series of iridacyclopentenes of composition [TpMe2 Ir(k2 -C,C-CH2 CR'=CRCH2 )(CO)] (TpMe2 =hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)borate; R=R'=H, 1; R=Me, R'=H, 2; R=R'=Me, 3) have been subjected to common organic chemistry procedures for hydrogenation, cyclopropanation, epoxidation, water addition through hydroboration, cis-dihydroxylation, and ozonolysis. The stability of metallacycles 1-3, imparted by the presence of the co-ligands TpMe2 and CO, directs the reactivity towards the C=C double bonds, and furthermore the stereochemistry of the products formed is strongly dictated by the steric demands of the TpMe2 ligand. While the products obtained in some of the above-mentioned reactions are the expected ones from an organic chemistry point of view, in other cases the results differ from the outcomes of similar reactions carried out with the all-carbon counterparts.

RESUMEN

The first example of a diazo palladium adduct is reported. The complexes [(ArNHC-PPh2 )M(η2 -N2 C(Ph)CO2 Et)] (M=Ni, 3; M=Pd, 4; ArNHC-PPh2 =3-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-1-[(diphenylphosphino)ethyl]imidazol-2-ylidene) were prepared by ligand exchange with styrene-coordinated precursors [(ArNHC-PPh2 )M(styrene)] (M=Ni, 1; M=Pd, 2). Complex 4 was fully characterized, including X-ray analyses; this constitutes the first example of a diazo adduct compound with palladium, thereby closing the gap between Groups 8 and 10 regarding this type of compounds.

RESUMEN

A series of nickel pincer complexes with terminal alkoxo ligands [(iPrPCP)Ni-OR] (R = Et, nBu, iPr, CH2CH2OH; iPrPCP is the 2,6-bis(diisopropylphosphinomethyl)phenyl pincer ligand) was synthesized and fully characterized. Together with the previously reported methoxo analogues of Ni and Pd, these complexes constitute a unique series of isostructural late transition-metal alkoxides. Spectroscopic and X-ray diffraction data provide direct indications of the strong polarization of their covalent Ni-OR bonds. One of the most salient features of this class of compounds is their facile hydrolysis with traces of moisture, leading to equilibrium mixtures with the corresponding hydroxides [(iPrPCP)M-OH] (M = Ni or Pd) and alcohols, ROH. To compare the hydrolytic stability of nickel and palladium alkoxides, we performed NMR titrations of both hydroxides with several alcohols and determined the corresponding equilibrium constants. In general, these constants are ca. 1 order of magnitude smaller for M = Ni than Pd, indicating that Ni alkoxide complexes are more readily hydrolyzed than their Pd counterparts. For alkoxide complexes containing heteroatom-free R groups, the tendency to hydrolyze decreases as the parent alcohol ROH becomes more acidic, that is, R = Me > Et > iPr. This intuitive trend is broken for 2-methoxyethanol, the most acidic alcohol investigated. The hydroxo/2-methoxyethanol exchange equilibrium constants are comparable to those of ethanol (M = Ni) or methanol (M = Pd), showing that the corresponding 2-methoxyethoxide complexes are more prone to hydrolysis than anticipated. These experimental observations were rationalized in the light of density functional theory calculations.

RESUMEN

A novel transformation is reported for the reaction of terminal or internal alkynes with the nitrene precursor PhI=NTs (Ts=p-toluenesulfonyl) in the presence of catalytic amounts of TpBr3 Cu(NCMe) (TpBr3 =hydrotris(3,4,5-tribromo-pyrazolylborate). Two products containing an imine functionality have been isolated from the reaction mixtures, identified as sulfinamides and isothiazoles. The former correspond to the formal reduction of the sulfone group into sulfoxide, whereas the latter involves the insertion of an alkyne carbon atom into the aromatic ring of the N-tosyl moiety.

RESUMEN

Cationic and neutral silver(I)-L complexes (L=Buchwald-type biaryl phosphanes) with nitrogen co-ligands or organosulfonate counter ions have been synthesised and characterised through their structural and spectroscopic properties. At room temperature, both cationic and neutral silver(I)-L complexes are extremely active catalysts in the promotion of the single and double A(3) coupling of terminal (di)alkynes, pyrrolidine and formaldehyde. In addition, the aza-Diels-Alder two- and three-component coupling reactions of Danishefsky's diene with an imine or amine and aldehyde are efficiently catalysed by these cationic or neutral silver(I)-L complexes. The solvent influences the catalytic performance due to limited complex solubility or solvent decomposition and reactivity. The isolation of new silver(I)-L complexes with reagents as ligands lends support to mechanistic proposals for such catalytic processes. The activity, stability and metal-distal arene interaction of these silver(I)-L catalysts have been compared with those of analogous cationic gold(I) and copper(I) complexes.

RESUMEN

New dimolybdenum complexes of composition [Mo2{µ-Me}2Li(S)}(µ-X)(µ-N^N)2] (3a-3c), where S = THF or Et2O and N^N represents a bidentate aminopyridinate or amidinate ligand that bridges the quadruply bonded molybdenum atoms, were prepared from the reaction of the appropriate [Mo2{µ-O2CMe}2(µ-N^N)2] precursors and LiMe. For complex 3a, X = MeCO2, while in 3b and 3c, X = Me. Solution NMR studies in C6D6 solvent support formulation of the complexes as contact ion pairs with weak agostic Mo-CH3···Li interactions, which were also evidenced by X-ray crystallography in the solid-state structures of the molecules of 3a and 3b. Samples of 3c enriched in (13)C (99%) at the metal-bonded methyl sites were also prepared and investigated by NMR spectroscopy employing C6D6 and THF-d8 solvents. Crystallization of 3c from toluene:tetrahydrofuran mixtures provided single crystals of the solvent separated ion pair complex [Li(THF)4] [Mo2(Me)2(µ-Me){µ-HC(NDipp)2}2] (4c), where Dipp stands for 2,6-iPr2C6H3. A computational analysis of the Mo2(µ-Me)2Li core of complexes 3a and 3b has been developed, which is consistent with a small but non-negligible electron-density sharing between the C and Li atoms of the mainly ionic CH3···Li interactions.

RESUMEN

The Tp(Me2)Ir(III) complex 1-OH2 (Tp(Me2) = hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)borate), which contains a labile molecule of water and an iridium-bonded alkenyl moiety (-C(R)═C(R)-(R=CO2Me)) as part of a benzo-annulated five-membered iridacycle, reacts readily with the conjugated dienes butadiene and 2,3-dimethylbutadiene to afford the corresponding Diels-Alder products. Experimental and DFT studies are in accordance with an initial [4 + 3] cyclometalation reaction between the diene and the five-coordinated 16-electron organometallic fragment 1 (generated from 1-OH2 by facile water dissociation). The reaction can be extended to a related TpIr(III) complex (Tp = hydrotris(pyrazolyl)borate) that also features a labile ligand (i.e., 2-THF).
