BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial-resistant Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) poses a significant public health concern, especially given the limited therapeutic options for azithromycin-resistant strains. Hence, there is a necessity for new studies to reconsider the use of azithromycin, which has diminished in effectiveness against numerous strains. Thus, we aimed to augment azithromycin's anti-Helicobacter properties by combining it with curcumin in different formulations, including curcumin in clove oil, curcumin nano-gold emulsion, and curcumin nanoemulsion. METHODS: The antimicrobial activities of the investigated compounds, both individually and in combination with other anti-Helicobacter drugs, were evaluated. Their antibiofilm and anti-virulence properties were assessed using both phenotypic and genotypic methods, alongside molecular docking studies. Our findings were further validated through mouse protection assays and histopathological analysis. RESULTS: We observed high anti-Helicobacter activities of curcumin, especially curcumin nanoemulsion. A synergistic effect was detected between curcumin nanoemulsion and azithromycin with fraction inhibitory concentration index (FICI) values <0.5. The curcumin nanoemulsion was the most active anti-biofilm and anti-virulence compound among the examined substances. The biofilm-correlated virulence genes (babA and hopQ) and ureA genes were downregulated (fold change <1) post-treatment with curcumin nanoemulsion. On the protein level, the anti-virulence activities of curcumin nanoemulsion were documented based on molecular docking studies. These findings aligned with histopathological scoring of challenge mice, affirming the superior efficacy of curcumin nanoemulsion/azithromycin combination. CONCLUSION: The anti-Helicobacter activities of all curcumin physical forms pose significant challenges due to their higher minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values exceeding the maximum permissible level. However, using curcumin nanoemulsion at sub-MIC levels could enhance the anti-Helicobacter activity of azithromycin and exhibit anti-virulence properties, thereby improving patient outcomes and addressing resistant pathogens. Therefore, more extensive studies are necessary to assess the safety of incorporating curcumin nanoemulsion into H. pylori treatment.

Copper/Cuprous oxide/Carbon nanoparticles decorated MXene composite was prepared and subsequently examined for its potential application as a non-enzymatic glucose sensor. To carry out this, initially the Cu MOF/MXene composite was synthesised by the hydrothermal method and was annealed in an unreacted environment at different time intervals. During this process, petal like Cu MOF on MXene loses the organic ligands to form a Cu/Cu2O/C based nanoparticles on MXene. Further, an electrode was fabricated with the developed material for understanding the sensing performance by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry in 0.1 M NaOH solution. Results reveal that the highest weight percentage of copper oxide in the composite (15 min of annealed material) shows a higher electro catalytic activity for sensing glucose molecules due to more active sites with good electron transfer ability in the composite. The formed composite exhibits a wide linear range of 0.001-26.5 mM, with a sensitivity of 762.53µAmM-1cm-2(0.001-10.1 mM), and 397.18µAmM-1cm-2(11.2-26.9 mM) and the limit of detection was 0.103µM. In addition to this, the prepared electrode shows a good reusability, repeatability, selectivity with other interferences, stability (93.65% after 30 days of storage), and feasibility of measuring glucose in real samples. This finding reveals that the metal oxide derived from MOF based nanoparticle on the MXene surface will promote the use of non-enzymatic glucose sensors.

The optimised designs of dimethyl ammonium cobalt formate-based perovskite crystals [(CH3)2NH2]Co(HCOO)3 were experimentally synthesized and computationally utilized as absorbers for perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Crystals were grown using solvothermal synthesis. Additive materials (Fe, Ni) are responsible for the growth and suppression of crystals in the micrometre range. Temperature and pressure were altered to obtain optimum growth conditions. Grown crystals were characterized by spectroscopy (XRD, FT-IR, UV-Vis) and optical microscopy. Combined density functional theory (DFT) and drift-diffusion modelling frameworks were simulated. These simulators were used to examine various perovskite absorbers for solar-cell configurations. Field calculations were used to examine the structural stability, band structure, and electronic contribution of the constituent elements in [(CH3)2NH2]Co1-nMn(HCOO)3 (M = Fe, Ni and n = 0, 0.1) as absorber material. Conventional TiO2 and spiro-OMeTAD were used as the electron-transport layer and hole-transport layer, respectively, and Pt was used as a back contact. Comprehensive analysis of the effects of several parameters (layer thickness, series and shunt resistances, temperature, generation-recombination rates, current-voltage density, quantum efficiency) was carried out using simulation. Our proposed strategy may pave the way for further design of new absorber materials for PSCs.

Existing fossil-based commercial products present a significant threat to the depletion of global natural resources and the conservation of the natural environment. Also, the ongoing generation of waste is giving rise to challenges in waste management. Conventional practices for the management of waste, for instance, incineration and landfilling, emit gases that contribute to global warming. Additionally, the need for energy is escalating rapidly due to the growing populace and industrialization. To address this escalating desire in a sustainable manner, access to clean and renewable sources of energy is imperative for long-term development of mankind. These interrelated challenges can be effectively tackled through the scientific application of biowaste-to-bioenergy technologies. The current article states an overview of the strategies and current status of these technologies, including anaerobic digestion, transesterification, photobiological hydrogen production, and alcoholic fermentation which are utilized to convert diverse biowastes such as agricultural and forest residues, animal waste, and municipal waste into bioenergy forms like bioelectricity, biodiesel, bio alcohol, and biogas. The successful implementation of these technologies requires the collaborative efforts of government, stakeholders, researchers, and scientists to enhance their practicability and widespread adoption.

Carbon dots (CDs) are an emerging type of carbon nanomaterial with strong biocompatibility, distinct chemical and physical properties, and low toxicity. CDs may emit fluorescence in the ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared (NIR) range, which renders them beneficial for biomedical applications. CDs are usually made from carbon precursors and can be synthesized using top-down and bottom-up methods and it can be easily functionalized using different methods. For specific cases of biomedical applications carbon dot functionalization augments the materials' characteristics. Novel functionalization techniques are still being investigated. This review will look at the benefits of functionalization to attain a high yield and various biological applications. Biomedical applications such as photodynamic and photothermal therapy, biosensing, bioimaging, and antiviral and antibacterial properties will be covered in this review. The future applications of green synthesized carbon dots will be determined in part by this review.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL), also known as recurrent implantation failure (RIF), is a distressing condition affecting women characterized by two or more consecutive miscarriages or the inability to carry a pregnancy beyond 20 weeks. Immunological factors and genetic variations, particularly in Vit D Binding Protein (VDBP), have gained attention as potential contributors to RPL. This study aimed to provide insight into the immunological, genetic, and metabolic networks underlying RPL, placing a particular emphasis on the interactions between VDBP, HLA-G1, CTLA-4, ENTPD1, and adenosine-fetal-maternal conflict crosstalk. METHODS: A retrospective study included 198 women with three or more consecutive spontaneous abortions. Exclusion criteria comprised uterine abnormalities, endocrine disorders, parental chromosomal abnormalities, infectious factors, autoimmune diseases, or connective tissue diseases. Immunological interplay was investigated in 162 female participants, divided into two groups based on their Vit D levels: normal Vit D-RPL and low Vit D-RPL. Various laboratory techniques were employed, including LC/MS/MS for Vit D measurement, ELISA for protein detection, flow cytometry for immune function analysis, and molecular docking for protein-ligand interaction assessment. RESULTS: General characteristics between groups were significant regarding Vit D and glucose levels. Low Vit D levels were associated with decreased NK cell activity and downregulation of HLA-G1 and HLA-G5 proteins, while CTLA-4 revealed upregulation. VDBP was significantly downregulated in the low Vit D group. Our findings highlight the intricate relationship between Vit D status and adenosine metabolism by the downregulation of SGLT1, and NT5E, key components of adenosine metabolism, suggests that Vit D deficiency may disrupt the regulation of adenosine levels, leading to an impaired reproductive outcome. HNF1ß, a negative regulator of VDBP, was upregulated, while HNF1α, a positive regulator, was downregulated in low Vit D women after RPL. Molecular docking analysis revealed crucial residues involved in the interaction between Vit D and HNF1ß. CONCLUSION: Collectively, these findings underscore the importance of Vit D in modulating immune function and molecular pathways relevant to pregnancy maintenance, highlighting the need for further research to elucidate the mechanisms and potential therapeutic interventions for improving pregnancy outcomes in individuals with Vit D deficiency and RPL.

PURPOSE: There is a paucity of literature on infections in civilian gunshot associated with long bone fractures with the reported rates ranging from 0-15.7%.This study aimed to investigate the rates of infection associated with long bone fractures caused by civilian gunshots. The specific objectives were to determine if certain extremities were at a higher risk for infection and to identify the types of bacteria present in these infections by analyzing culture isolates. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of consecutive patients aged 18-64 who sustained gunshot-associated long bone fractures at an urban Level I trauma centre from 2010 to 2017. Patient selection was based done through a institutional trauma centre database using international classification of diseases (ICD) 9 and 10 codes. We included patients who underwent surgical treatment, specifically fracture fixation, at our institution and excluded patients with fractures involving the pelvis, spine, foot, and hand. A total of 384 gunshot-associated long bone fractures in 347 patients were identified for analysis. Relevant patient-, injury-, and treatment-related variables were extracted from clinical records and radiographic reviews. Outcomes of interest included bony union, repeat operative procedures, and the development of deep infection. RESULTS: 347 patients with 384 long bone fractures were included. 32 fractures in 32 patients developed an infection for an incidence of 9.3% of patients and 8.3% of fractures. Gram-positive bacteria were present in 23/32 (72.0%) culture isolates, gram-negative bacteria in 10/32 (31.3%) culture isolates, and six infections were polymicrobial. Staphylococcus 16/32 (50.0%) and Enterobacter 6/32 (18.8%) species were the most common isolates. Of the Staphylococcus species, 5/16 (31.3%) were MRSA. Lower extremity fractures had a greater risk for infection compared to the upper extremity (11.7% vs 3.7% p < 0.01) and fractures that developed an infection had a larger average zone of comminution (63.9 mm vs 48.5 mm p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: This study investigated the rates of infection associated with long bone fractures caused by civilian gunshots. The overall infection rate observed in our series aligns with existing literature. Gram-positive bacteria were the predominant isolates, with a notable incidence of MRSA in our patient population, highlighting the need for considering empiric coverage. Additionally, gram-negative organisms were found in a significant proportion of infections, and a notable percentage of infections were polymicrobial. Our findings emphasize the importance of carefully assessing highly comminuted lower extremity fractures and implementing appropriate antibiotic coverage and operative debridement for patients with gunshot-related long bone fractures. While current prophylaxis algorithms for open fractures lack specific inclusion of gunshot wounds, we propose incorporating these injuries to reduce the incidence of infections associated with such fractures.

Activated carbon/BiOI nanocomposites were successfully synthesized through a simplistic method. The produced composites were then characterized using XRD, TEM, SEM-EDX, and XPS. The results showed that BiOI with a tetragonal crystal structure had been formed. The interaction between activated carbon and BiOI was confirmed via all the mentioned tools. The obtained nanocomposites' electrical conductivity, dielectric properties, and Ac impedance were studied at 59 KHz-1.29 MHz. AC and dc conductivities were studied at temperatures between 303 and 573 K within the frequency range of 59 KHz-1.29 MHz. The 10% activated carbon/BiOI nanocomposite possessed dc and AC conductivity values of 5.56 × 10-4 and 2.86 × 10-4 Ω-1.cm-1, respectively, which were higher than BiOI and the other nanocomposites. Every sample exhibited increased electrical conductivity values as the temperature and frequency rose, suggesting that all samples had semiconducting behavior. The loss and dielectric constants (ε' and εâ³) also dropped as the frequency increased, leading to higher dielectric loss. The Nyquist plot unraveled single semicircle arcs and a decreased bulk resistance, indicating decreased grain boundary resistance. Consequently, the electrical characteristics of BiOI, 1C/BiOI, 5C/BiOI, and 10C/BiOI implied their applicability as dielectric absorbers, charge-stored capacitors, and high-frequency microwave devices.

Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly AI-Generated Imagery, has the potential to impact medical and patient education. This research explores the use of AI-generated imagery, from text-to-images, in medical education, focusing on congenital heart diseases (CHD). Utilizing ChatGPT's DALL·E 3, the research aims to assess the accuracy and educational value of AI-created images for 20 common CHDs. In this study, we utilized DALL·E 3 to generate a comprehensive set of 110 images, comprising ten images depicting the normal human heart and five images for each of the 20 common CHDs. The generated images were evaluated by a diverse group of 33 healthcare professionals. This cohort included cardiology experts, pediatricians, non-pediatric faculty members, trainees (medical students, interns, pediatric residents), and pediatric nurses. Utilizing a structured framework, these professionals assessed each image for anatomical accuracy, the usefulness of in-picture text, its appeal to medical professionals, and the image's potential applicability in medical presentations. Each item was assessed on a Likert scale of three. The assessments produced a total of 3630 images' assessments. Most AI-generated cardiac images were rated poorly as follows: 80.8% of images were rated as anatomically incorrect or fabricated, 85.2% rated to have incorrect text labels, 78.1% rated as not usable for medical education. The nurses and medical interns were found to have a more positive perception about the AI-generated cardiac images compared to the faculty members, pediatricians, and cardiology experts. Complex congenital anomalies were found to be significantly more predicted to anatomical fabrication compared to simple cardiac anomalies. There were significant challenges identified in image generation. Based on our findings, we recommend a vigilant approach towards the use of AI-generated imagery in medical education at present, underscoring the imperative for thorough validation and the importance of collaboration across disciplines. While we advise against its immediate integration until further validations are conducted, the study advocates for future AI-models to be fine-tuned with accurate medical data, enhancing their reliability and educational utility.

Aim: The incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) has increased globally, in particular patients under the age of fifty. This is a pilot study of a faecal immunochemical testing(FIT) service in primary care. The aim was to trial a FIT service for asymptomatic patients. Methods: We offered FIT kits to asymptomatic patients, aged between 40-75 years old during routine consultations. The number of FITs performed and the outcomes were reviewed. A cut-off of >10µg Hb/g faeces was defined as a positive result. Results: Overall 180 FIT kits were distributed, 7 duplicate tests were given. Of the 173 patients recruited, 142 (82%) samples were analysed in the lab. A total of 126 ( 88.7%) samples had a normal result, 8(5%) were rejected, 31 (17.9%) did not send their sample for analysis. A positive result was found in 8(5%), of these 6 (75%) underwent colonoscopy. No cancer was identified, 4 (50%) had polyps removed and 2 patients require follow up colonoscopy. Discussion: This study represents the first successful implementation of a FIT service in primary care in Ireland. There is a significant unmet need in this setting and strong scientific rationale for the use of FIT testing in general practice.

The ongoing global concern of cancer worldwide necessitates the development of advanced diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. The majority of recent detection strategies involve the employment of biomarkers. A critical biomarker for cancer immunotherapy efficacy and patient prognosis is Programmed Death Ligand 1 (PD-L1), which is a key immune checkpoint protein. PD-L1 can be particularly linked to cancer progression and therapy response. Current detection methods, such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), face limitations like high cost, time consumption, and complexity. This study introduces a microcantilever-based biosensor designed for the detection of soluble PD-L1 (sPD-L1), which has a specific association with PD-L1. The biosensor utilizes anti-PD-L1 as the sensing layer, capitalizing on the specific binding affinity between anti-PD-L1 and sPD-L1. The presence of the sensing layer was confirmed through Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and contact angle measurements. Binding between sPD-L1 and anti-PD-L1 induces a shift in the microcantilever's resonance frequency, which is proportional to the PD-L1 concentration. Notably, the resonance frequency shift demonstrates a robust linear relationship with the increasing biomarker concentration, ranging from 0.05 ng/ml to 500 ng/ml. The detection limit of the biosensor was determined to be approximately 10 pg/ml. The biosensor demonstrates excellent performance in detecting PD-L1 with high specificity even in complex biological matrices. This innovative approach not only provides a promising tool for early cancer diagnosis but also holds potential for monitoring immunotherapy efficacy, paving the way for personalized and effective cancer treatments.

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about the prevalence of refractive errors and amblyopia among school children on the islands of East Coast Malaysia. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of these conditions and their associated factors in this unique and remote geographical location. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This multicentre cross-sectional school-based study included 480 children aged 7 to 12 year from primary schools on the islands of the East Coast of Malaysia. All children underwent visual acuity assessment, orthoptic evaluation, anterior and posterior segment examinations and manifest refraction. Demographic data, history of parental refractive error, parental education level, duration of digital screen time and time spent outdoors were documented in a questionnaire distributed to the parents. RESULTS: The mean age was 9.53 ± 1.69 years, with an equal distribution of genders. The ethnic composition of the subjects was 99.4% Malay and 0.6% Orang Asli. The overall prevalence of refractive errors was 11.9% (95% CI: 9.1 to 15.1%), with myopia at 7.1% (95% CI: 5.0 to 9.8%), hyperopia at 2.5% (95% CI: 1.3 to 4.3%), astigmatism at 2.3% (95% CI: 1.1 to 4.1%) and amblyopia at 2.5% (95% CI: 1.3 to 4.3%). Older age, an absence of parental history of refractive error and reduced daily outdoor time were significantly associated with refractive errors (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of refractive error is 11.9% and amblyopia is 2.5% among primary school children on the islands of the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Older age, an absence of parental history of refractive error and reduced daily outdoor time are associated with refractive error.

Endocardial fibroelastosis (EFE) is a rare cardiac condition characterized by excessive endocardial thickening secondary to fibroelastic tissues that commonly present in infants and young children. Most of endocardial fibroelastosis cases are secondary forms, which occur in conjunction with other cardiac diseases. Endocardial fibroelastosis has been associated with poor prognosis and outcomes. In light of recent advancements in understanding pathophysiology, several new data have revealed compelling evidence that abnormal endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition is the root cause of endocardial fibroelastosis. This article aims to review the recent development in pathophysiology, diagnostic workup, and management, and to discuss possible differential diagnoses.

BACKGROUND: Given the high rates globally of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), there is a clear need to target health behaviours through person-centred interventions. Health coaching is one strategy that has been widely recognised as a tool to foster positive behaviour change. However, it has been used inconsistently and has produced mixed results. This systematic review sought to explore the use of behaviour change techniques (BCTs) in health coaching interventions and identify which BCTs are linked with increased effectiveness in relation to HbA1C reductions. METHODS: In line with the PICO framework, the review focused on people with T2DM, who received health coaching and were compared with a usual care or active control group on HbA1c levels. Studies were systematically identified through different databases including Medline, Web of science, and PsycINFO searches for relevant randomised controlled trials (RCTs) in papers published between January 1950 and April 2022. The Cochrane collaboration tool was used to evaluate the quality of the studies. Included papers were screened on the reported use of BCTs based on the BCT taxonomy. The effect sizes obtained in included interventions were assessed by using Cohen's d and meta-analysis was used to estimate sample-weighted average effect sizes (Hedges' g). RESULTS: Twenty RCTs with a total sample size of 3222 were identified. Random effects meta-analysis estimated a small-sized statistically significant effect of health coaching interventions on HbA1c reduction (g+ = 0.29, 95% CI: 0.18 to 0.40). A clinically significant HbA1c decrease of ≥5 mmol/mol was seen in eight studies. Twenty-three unique BCTs were identified in the reported interventions, with a mean of 4.5 (SD = 2.4) BCTs used in each study. Of these, Goal setting (behaviour) and Problem solving were the most frequently identified BCTs. The number of BCTs used was not related to intervention effectiveness. In addition, there was little evidence to link the use of specific BCTs to larger reductions in HbA1c across the studies included in the review; instead, the use of Credible source and Social reward in interventions were associated with smaller reductions in HbA1c. CONCLUSION: A relatively small number of BCTs have been used in RCTs of health coaching interventions for T2DM. Inadequate, imprecise descriptions of interventions and the lack of theory were the main limitations of the studies included in this review. Moreover, other possible BCTs directly related to the theoretical underpinnings of health coaching were absent. It is recommended that key BCTs are identified at an early stage of intervention development, although further research is needed to examine the most effective BCTs to use in health coaching interventions. The comparison between adding egg yolks (EY) of chicken, duck, goose, pigeon, Japanese quail or turkey to the Tris glycerol extender on the quality of ram semen before freezing and post-thawing was evaluated. The correlation between fatty acids levels in egg yolks of different avian species and the post-thawed quality of ram semen was studied. The pooled ejaculates collected from five rams were extended with Tris EY glycerol extenders containing the EY of chicken, duck, goose, pigeon, quail or turkey and cryopreserved at -196°C. The straws were evaluated before freezing and post-thawing for sperm motility using a sperm cell analyser, vitality using a FluoVit kit and abnormality using a SpermBlue stain besides plasma-membrane and DNA integrities using a hypo-osmotic swelling test and a Halomax kit, respectively. The moisture, ash, protein and fatty acid (FA) contents of EY of chicken, duck, goose, pigeon, quail and turkey were analysed using a gas chromatograph. The chicken and quail EY extenders significantly improved the total progressive motility (32.05 ± 1.41 and 31.68 ± 1.43, respectively), vitality, plasma membrane and DNA integrities and abnormalities of post-thawing ram semen in comparison with other EY extenders. Pigeon EY had the lowest saturated fatty acids (SFAs) in comparison with the other types of EYs. The chicken and turkey EYs had the lowest percentage of (monounsaturated fatty acids) MUFAs in comparison with the other types of EYs. The highest percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) was observed in the turkey, pigeon and chicken EYs which were considered double or triple their percentage in duck and goose EYs, respectively. Significant positive correlations existed between SFAs levels and total motility, vitality, plasma membrane functionality and DNA integrity (0.77, 0.80, 0.67, 0.52, respectively). Significant negative correlations existed between gondoic EY levels and total motility, vitality, plasma membrane functionality and DNA integrity. In conclusion, the EYs of duck, goose, pigeon or turkey cannot substitute the chicken EY in ram semen extenders as they gave lower post-thawing quality. The quail EY can be used as a good replacer for chicken EY in the extender used for cryopreservation of ram semen. The EY composition of FAs can significantly affect the quality of ram semen post-thawing.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the causative agent of COVID-19 which was detected in late 2019 in Wuhan, China. As of September 2022, there have been over 612 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 with over 6.5 million associated deaths. In many cases, anosmia and dysgeusia have been identified as primary symptoms of COVID-19 infection in patients. While the loss of smell (anosmia) and loss of taste (dysgeusia) due to COVID-19 infection is transient in most patients, many report that these symptoms persist following recovery. Understanding the pathogenesis of these symptoms is paramount to early treatment of the infection. We conducted a literature review of Google Scholar and PubMed to find and analyze studies discussing anosmia and dysgeusia in the context of COVID-19 to understand the progression and management of these symptoms. The mechanism for dysgeusia is largely unknown; however, pathogenesis of anosmia includes inflammation and cytokine release resulting from the infection that alters neuronal signaling, thus inducing the loss of smell that patients experience. Anosmia may be managed and potentially resolved sooner with a combination therapy of olfactory training and budesonide irrigation of the nasal cavity. It is important to note that the variants of SARS-CoV-2 are genetically distinguished from the original virion due to a mutation in their spike proteins, giving them a different symptom profile regarding anosmia and dysgeusia. This variability in symptomatology is an area of study that needs to be further explored.

Herein, we investigate the performance of single- and multiparametric luminescence thermometry founded on the temperature-dependent spectral features of Ca6BaP4O17:Mn5+ near-infrared emission. The material was prepared by a conventional steady-state synthesis, and its photoluminescence emission was measured from 7500 to 10,000 cm-1 over the 293-373 K temperature range in 5 K increments. The spectra are composed of the emissions from 1E â 3A2 and 3T2 â 3A2 electronic transitions and Stokes and anti-Stokes vibronic sidebands at 320 cm-1 and 800 cm-1 from the maximum of 1E â 3A2 emission. Upon temperature increase, the 3T2 and Stokes bands gained in intensity while the maximum of 1E emission band is redshifted. We introduced the procedure for the linearization and feature scaling of input variables for linear multiparametric regression. Then, we experimentally determined accuracies and precisions of the luminescence thermometry based on luminescence intensity ratios between emissions from the 1E and 3T2 states, between Stokes and anti-Stokes emission sidebands, and at the 1E energy maximum. The multiparametric luminescence thermometry involving the same spectral features showed similar performance, comparable to the best single-parameter thermometry.

Quartz tuning forks (QTFs), which were coated with gold and with self-assembled monolayers (SAM) of a lower-rim functionalized calix[4]arene methoxy ester (CME), were used for the detection of benzene, toluene, and ethylbenzene in water samples. The QTF device was tested by measuring the respective frequency shifts obtained using small (100 µL) samples of aqueous benzene, toluene, and ethylbenzene at four different concentrations (10-12, 10-10, 10-8, and 10-6 M). The QTFs had lower limits of detection for all three aromatic hydrocarbons in the 10-14 M range, with the highest resonance frequency shifts (±5%) being shown for the corresponding 10-6 M solutions in the following order: benzene (199 Hz) > toluene (191 Hz) > ethylbenzene (149 Hz). The frequency shifts measured with the QTFs relative to that in deionized water were inversely proportional to the concentration/mass of the analytes. Insights into the effects of the alkyl groups of the aromatic hydrocarbons on the electronic interaction energies for their hypothetical 1:1 supramolecular host-guest binding with the CME sensing layer were obtained through density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the electronic interaction energies (ΔIEs) using B3LYP-D3/GenECP with a mixed basis set: LANL2DZ and 6-311++g(d,p), CAM-B3LYP/LANL2DZ, and PBE/LANL2DZ. The magnitudes of the ΔIEs were in the following order: [Au4-CME⊃[benzene] > [Au4-CME]⊃[toluene] > [Au4-CME]⊃[ethylbenzene]. The gas-phase BSSE-uncorrected ΔIE values for these complexes were higher, with values of -96.86, -87.80, and -79.33 kJ mol-1, respectively, and -86.39, -77.23, and -67.63 kJ mol-1, respectively, for the corresponding BSSE-corrected values using B3LYP-D3/GenECP with LANL2dZ and 6-311++g(d,p). The computational findings strongly support the experimental results, revealing the same trend in the ΔIEs for the proposed hypothetical binding modes between the tested analytes with the CME SAMs on the Au-QTF sensing surfaces.
RESUMEN
PURPOSE: To estimate the prevalence of computer vision syndrome (CVS) among university medical students in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, after establishing remote learning during COVID-19 pandemic and to compare settings of electronic device usage and patterns of CVS protective measures applied by students before and during this pandemic. METHODS: This is an observational descriptive cross-sectional study which included 1st to 5th year medical students who were actively enrolled at the governmental colleges of medicine in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, during the COVID-19 lockdown. The sample size was estimated to be 287 medical students. Participants were asked to volunteer and fill an electronic online questionnaire. RESULTS: A total of 300 medical students were included in this study. 94.0% reported at least one symptom of CVS, while 67% reported having more than three symptoms. The most frequently reported symptoms were musculoskeletal pain (84.3%), headache (71.1%) and dry eyes (68%). Thirty-eight percent of the students experienced more severe symptoms, while 48% experienced more frequent symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic. Risk factors for having three or more symptoms were being a female (p < 0.001) and using electronic devices for longer periods (6.8 h ± 2.8) during COVID-19 lockdown (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: CVS prevalence during COVID-19 era among medical students is high. This necessitates increasing the awareness of CVS and its preventive measures.

AIMS: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of lactobacilli strains in preventing the recurrences of vaginal candidiasis (VC) in 78 pregnant women with VC (lactobacilli, n = 39; placebo, n = 39) and the potential benefits on quality of life. METHODS AND RESULTS: The lactobacilli putative probiotic (SynForU-HerCare; two capsules/day of 9·5 log CFU per capsule) or placebo was administered for 8-weeks in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Subjects were assessed for vaginal and gut health conditions at baseline, week-4 and week-8 via questionnaires. The vulvovaginal symptom questionnaire not only covered aspects pertaining to vulvovaginal symptoms but also the quality of life impacts such as emotional, social and sexual. The administration of lactobacilli reduced symptoms of irritation (P = 0·023) and discharge (P = 0·011) starting week-4 and continued after week-8 (P < 0·05), accompanied by reduced symptoms for burning after week-8 (P = 0·046) as compared to the placebo. Patients consuming lactobacilli also showed reduced concern about symptoms after week-4 (P = 0·010) and continued after week-8 (P = 0·001), accompanied by reduced impairment of daily activities attributed to vulvovaginal symptoms (P = 0·012) and continued after week-8 (P = 0·026). Insignificant differences were observed for sexual impacts between treatment groups. The administration of lactobacilli also reduced recurrences of both emotional and social stress as compared to the placebo at both week-4 and week-8 (P < 0·05). Patients consuming lactobacilli showed higher defecation times per week at week-4 (P = 0·010) and week-8 (P = 0·001) as compared to the placebo group, indicating the potential to reduce risks of pregnancy-induced constipation. CONCLUSIONS: Lactobacilli probiotics are beneficial towards pregnant women, especially in reducing vulvovaginal symptoms and recurrences of VC, accompanied by improved emotional and social distress attributed to VC. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The study demonstrated the preventive and modulatory roles of lactobacilli strains against VC in pregnant women. Taken altogether, our present data illustrated that lactobacilli probiotics are beneficial towards pregnant women, especially in reducing vulvovaginal symptoms and recurrences of VC, accompanied by improved emotional and social distress attributed to VC, thus could be a potential strategy for the maintenance of vaginal health during pregnancy.
