RESUMEN

The Linac Coherent Light Source has added a self-seeding capability to the soft x-ray range using a grating monochromator system. We report the demonstration of soft x-ray self-seeding with a measured resolving power of 2000-5000, wavelength stability of 10(-4), and an increase in peak brightness by a factor of 2-5 across the photon energy range of 500-1000 eV. By avoiding the need for a monochromator at the experimental station, the self-seeded beam can deliver as much as 50-fold higher brightness to users.

RESUMEN

The accurate measurement of the arrival time of a hard X-ray free electron laser (FEL) pulse with respect to a laser is of utmost importance for pump-probe experiments proposed or carried out at FEL facilities around the world. This manuscript presents the latest device to meet this challenge, a THz streak camera using Xe gas clusters, capable of pulse arrival time measurements with an estimated accuracy of several femtoseconds. An experiment performed at SACLA demonstrates the performance of the device at photon energies between 5 and 10 keV with variable photon beam parameters.

OBJECTIVE: Guidelines for swab use at our centre cover lower-limb wounds, ulcers and postoperative wound infections but not all types of wound. The objective of this study was to assess current practices in wound management at Mater Dei Hospital and to identify areas for improvement. METHOD: Wound swabs received at the microbiology department between February and April 2013 from adult inpatients departments were included. Wound swabs from the ophthalmology and paediatric departments were excluded. Patient comorbidities, detailed wound descriptions, acknowledgement of and documentation of culture and sensitivity results, and antibiotic changes during treatment were collected. Indictors of infection including white cell counts (WCCs) and C-reactive protein (CRP) were recorded. RESULTS: The study included 134 patients. Diabetes mellitus (61.9%, n=83) was the most common underlying comorbidity. Postoperative wounds were the most common type of wounds swabbed (34.3%). The wound swab characteristics were not fully documented in 27 patients (20.1%). The CRP results were not recorded in 39.6% and WCCs were not taken in 10.4% of patients. Wound swab results were not acknowledged in the medical notes of 76% of cases. CONCLUSION: Wound swabs that were not indicated, lack of documentation and untimely acknowledgement of results were evident. This suggests that a significant proportion of wound swabs may not have been justified and had no impact on wound management. Our study clearly underlines the need for a more comprehensive guideline. RESUMEN

Steady-state and picosecond time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy is used to study the ground and lowest triplet states of [ReX(CO)(3)(bpy)](n+), X = Etpy (n = 1), Cl, or Br (n = 0). We demonstrate that the transient spectra at both the Re L(3)- and Br K-edges show the emergence of a pre-edge feature, absent in the ground-state spectrum, which is associated with the electron hole created in the highest occupied molecular orbital following photoexcitation. Importantly, these features have the same dynamics, confirming previous predictions that the low-lying excited states of these complexes involve a two-center charge transfer from both the Re and the ligand, X. We also demonstrate that the DFT optimized ground and excited structures allow us to reproduce the experimental XANES and EXAFS spectra. The ground-state structural refinement shows that the Br atom contributes very little to the latter, whereas the Re-C-O scattering paths are dominant due to the so-called focusing effect. For the excited-state spectrum, the Re-X bond undergoes one of the largest changes but still remains a weak contribution to the photoinduced changes of the EXAFS spectrum.

We present a static and picosecond X-ray absorption study at the Cu K-edge of bis(2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline)copper(I) ([Cu(dmp)2](+); dmp = 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline) dissolved in acetonitrile and dichloromethane. The steady-state photoluminescence spectra in dichloromethane and acetonitrile are also presented and show a shift to longer wavelengths for the latter, which points to a stronger stabilization of the excited complex. The fine structure features of the static and transient X-ray spectra allow an unambiguous assignment of the electronic and geometric structure of the molecule in both its ground and excited (3)MLCT states. Importantly, the transient spectra are remarkably similar for both solvents, and the spectral changes can be rationalized using the optimized ground- and excited-state structures of the complex. The proposed assignment of the lifetime shortening of the excited state in donor solvents (acetonitrile) to a metal-centered exciplex is not corroborated here. Molecular dynamics simulations confirm the lack of complexation; however, in both solvents the molecules come close to the metal but undergo rapid exchange with the bulk. The shortening of the lifetime of the title complex and nine additional related complexes can be rationalized by the decrease in the (3)MLCT energy. Deviations from this trend may be explained by means of the effects of the dihedral angle between the ligand planes, the solvent, and the (3)MLCT-(1)MLCT energy gap.

We present a Wavelet transform analysis for the X-ray absorption spectra of molecules. In contrast to the traditionally used Fourier transform approach, this analysis yields a 2D correlation plot in both R- and k-space. As a consequence, it is possible to distinguish between different scattering pathways at the same distance from the absorbing atom and between the contributions of single and multiple scattering events, making an unambiguous assignment of the fine structure oscillations for complex systems possible. We apply this to two previously studied transition metal complexes, namely iron hexacyanide in both its ferric and ferrous form, and a rhenium diimine complex, [ReX(CO)(3)(bpy)], where X = Br, Cl, or ethyl pyridine (Etpy). Our results demonstrate the potential advantages of using this approach and they highlight the importance of multiple scattering, and specifically the focusing phenomenon to the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra of these complexes. We also shed light on the low sensitivity of the EXAFS spectrum to the Re-X scattering pathway.

The League of European Accelerator-based Photon Sources (LEAPS), comprising 19 large-scale user facilities in 10 member and associated states, has put forward for the first time a European strategy for a transformative way of cooperation, thereby mobilizing the members' substantial expertise in photon science and technology, in infrastructure management and service to users and stakeholders. This European Strategy for Accelerator-based Photon Sources-ESAPS 2022-is a coherent pan-European plan addressing the future challenges and needs of the new era in research and innovation, designed to put Europe in a global leadership position in important future key technologies. In ESAPS2022, ambitious facility upgrades and technology development plans as well as a new strategic challenge-driven use of these facilities are discussed.

RESUMEN

Time-dependent X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) measurements of chemical reaction dynamics have a time resolution which is limited by: (a) the speed and efficiency of the reaction initiation; (b) the duration of the X-ray pulses used for the measurement; and (c) the brightness of the X-ray source. X-Ray Free Electron Lasers (XFEL), which will deliver 20-100 fs pulses of X-rays, with a peak brightness which is 10(10) times that of a synchrotron, will alleviate limitations (b) and (c). Furthermore, by including a synchronized source of UV, visible, IR or THz pump radiation, the XFEL will contribute to the solution of limitation (a). The present article describes the XFEL operating principle and the generic design of an XFEL facility, emphasizing the features of particular interest to the XAS investigator.

OBJECTIVE: Endovascular revascularization in atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis (ARAS) has dominated during the last 15 years with surgery relegated mostly to back-up for failed endovascular procedures. This study examines the available outcome evidence to determine what role open surgery should have in comparison to endovascular treatment in the management of ARAS. METHOD: Of 183 papers listed in PubMed, the USNLM and the Cochrane library, (1975-2004) 47, dealing with outcomes of surgical and endovascular treatments (evidence levels 2b and 3) were selected. Endovascular included 1750 patients in 16 prospective non-randomised (PNRT) and 5 retrospective (RET) studies. Surgical included 2314 patients in 4 PNRTs and 17 RETs. Outcome data were subjected to meta-regression analysis weighted according to the inverse variance method. RESULTS: Mean maximum ages were 79.4 yrs (SD 6.9) for surgical and 83.6 yrs (SD 3.8) for endovascular studies. Primary technical success was similar. Endovascular patency declined by 0.26%/month (95% CI: 0.04-0.48, p=0.03). Surgical studies showed greater improvement for hypertension control by 21% (95% CI: 9-33%, p=0.001) and for renal function by 34% (95% CI: 18-54%, p<0.001), as well as a higher creatinine reduction by 32 micromol/L (95% CI: 7-57 micromol/L, p<0.014). A higher excess surgical mortality, 3.1% (95% CI: 1.8-4.4%, p<0.001) became insignificant, 0.18% (95% CI: 0.7-1.1, p=0.70) when concomitant aortic surgery was excluded. CONCLUSION: This data shows a marked and durable clinical benefit for surgery. These findings question the endovascular predominance in intervention in ARAS and highlight the need for a carefully designed prospective randomised comparison to define the roles of endovascular and surgical renal revascularization.

We present a novel analysis of time-resolved extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra based on the fitting of the experimental transients obtained from optical pump/x-ray probe experiments. We apply it to the analysis of picosecond EXAFS data on aqueous [Fe(II)(bpy)(3)](2+), which undergoes a light induced conversion from its low-spin (LS) ground state to the short-lived (tau approximately 650 ps) excited high-spin (HS) state. A series of EXAFS spectra were simulated for a collection of possible HS structures from which the ground state fit spectrum was subtracted to generate transient difference absorption (TA) spectra. These are then compared with the experimental TA spectrum using a least-squares statistical analysis to derive the structural change. This approach reduces the number of required parameters by cancellation in the differences. It also delivers a unique solution for both the fractional population and the extracted excited state structure. We thus obtain a value of the Fe-N bond elongation in the HS state with subpicometer precision (0.203+/-0.008 A).

OBJECTIVES: Comparison of Reverse Foam Sclerotherapy of the great saphenous vein (GSV) combed with sapheno-femoral junction (SFJ) ligation to standard (Babcock) stripping and invagination (Pin) stripping in a prospective clinical series. DESIGN: Prospective clinical series. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 90 consecutive limbs of 82 patients with incompetence of the GSV resulting in varicose veins were prospectively randomised into 3 groups of 30, treated by SFJ ligation and either reverse foam sclerotherapy, standard stripping or invagination stripping of the GSV. Outcomes were assessed post-operatively and at 2-weeks follow-up. Peri-operative blood loss (24 hrs), analgesic requirement, bruising and residual varicosities were assessed. Bruising was assessed by both patients and independent assessors using questionnaires. RESULTS: SFJ ligation plus reverse foam sclerotherapy of the GSV was associated with significantly less blood loss, bruising and post-op discomfort than either of the stripping techniques. (p<0.001, Mann-Whitney) CONCLUSION: Standard stripping of the GSV and invagination stripping are not associated with major discomfort and problems in the early post-operative period. SFJ ligation and GSV reverse foam sclerotherapy yielded greater patient satisfaction with less post-op bruising and discomfort and reduced analgesic requirements.

Mixtures of different particle species are often investigated using the angular averages of the scattered X-ray intensity. The number of species is deduced by singular value decomposition methods. The full disentanglement of the data into per-species contributions requires additional knowledge about the system under investigation. We propose to exploit higher-order angular X-ray intensity correlations with a new computational protocol, which we apply to synchrotron data from two-species mixtures of two-dimensional static test nanoparticles. Without any other information besides the correlations, we demonstrate the assessment of particle species concentrations in the measured data sets, as well as the full ab initio reconstruction of both particle structures. The concept extends straightforwardly to more species and to the three-dimensional case, whereby the practical application will require the measurements to be performed at an X-ray free electron laser.

We report the implementation of a method which can yield the 3D distribution of the phase (refractive index) of a weakly absorbing object from a single tomographic data set. In order to reduce the residual absorption artifact (due to the fact that only one data set is used) the original algorithm presented by A. V. Bronnikov is amended by adding in the filter a factor found by using a semi empirical approach. The quality of the reconstruction is largely sufficient for optimal segmentation and further postprocessing even though the filter correction is based on assumption of constant absorption. This one step approach allows keeping radiation dose to the minimum. Spatial resolution is comparable to the conventional absorption based technique. The performance of the method is validated by using an established phase contrast technique.

UNLABELLED: Trauma, elective orthopaedics, and an aging population will result in an increasing health burden and work load. The move to surgical podiatrists in the National Health Service within the United Kingdom will shift the surgical workload away from orthopaedic surgeons. A devastating complication of foot and ankle surgery is postoperative infection. While postoperative infection is multifactorial in etiology, concomitant diabetes mellitus increases the general risk of trauma and orthopaedic surgical site infections up to 8-fold. We therefore undertook a prospective study of our unit antibiotic prophylaxis regimes. Fifty patients participated. Swabs were obtained using aseptic technique from the plantar aspect of the feet, between the toes, and subsequently cultured on agar plates. Specimens were then incubated for 48 hours before being exposed to antibiotic plates. Cultured organisms were classified as susceptible to an antibiotic regimen if susceptibility to cefuroxime, or susceptibility to either drug of the flucloxacillin/gentamicin combination, was demonstrated. Statistical analysis e was performed. A P value <.05 was considered significant. Fifty patients were recruited, 26 (52%) were male. Mean age of 53 ± 19.4 years. The cohort included 15 diabetic, of which 11 (73.3%) insulin-dependent, and 35 nondiabetic patients. Comparing flucloxacillin/gentamicin against cefuroxime overall, susceptibility was noted in 84% and 70%, respectively (P = .096). Resistance to cefuroxime was significantly higher in diabetics than in nondiabetics (53% vs 25%, P = .046). The same pattern was observed for the flucloxacillin/gentamicin regimen (33% vs 9%, P = .049). While both regimens are active against colonizing organisms in this prospective observational study, flucloxacillin and gentamicin provide greater coverage overall. We have demonstrated that the use of flucloxacillin/gentamicin provides better coverage against commensal bacterial flora compared with cefuroxime alone. This is of even greater importance in the case of the specific high-risk subgroups, such as diabetic patients. LEVELS OF EVIDENCE: Level IV: Case Series.

We present a picosecond Fe K-edge absorption study of photoexcited ferrous and ferric hexacyanide in water under 355 and 266 nm excitation. Following 355 nm excitation, the transient spectra for the ferrous and ferric complexes exhibit a red shift of the edge reflecting an increased electron density at the Fe atom. For the former, an enhanced pre-edge transition is also observed. These observations are attributed to the aquated [Fe(CN)5OH2](3-) species, based on quantum chemical calculations which also provide structural parameters. Upon 266 nm excitation of the ferric complex, a transient reminiscent of the aquated species is observed (appearance of a pre-edge feature and red shift of the edge) but it is different from that obtained under 355 nm excitation. This points to a new reaction channel occurring through an intermediate state lying between these two excitation energies. Finally, 266 nm excitation of the ferrous species is dominated by the photooxidation channel with formation of the ferric complex as main photoproduct. However, we observe an additional minor photoproduct, which is identical to the 266 nm generated photoproduct of the ferric species, suggesting that under our experimental conditions, the pump pulse photooxidises the ferrous complex and re-excites the primary ferric photoproduct.

Physical, biological, and chemical transformations are initiated by changes in the electronic configuration of the species involved. These electronic changes occur on the timescales of attoseconds (10(-18) s) to femtoseconds (10(-15) s) and drive all subsequent electronic reorganization as the system moves to a new equilibrium or quasi-equilibrium state. The ability to detect the dynamics of these electronic changes is crucial for understanding the potential energy surfaces upon which chemical and biological reactions take place. Here, we report on the determination of the electronic structure of matter using a single self-seeded femtosecond x-ray pulse from the Linac Coherent Light Source hard x-ray free electron laser. By measuring the high energy resolution off-resonant spectrum (HEROS), we were able to obtain information about the electronic density of states with a single femtosecond x-ray pulse. We show that the unoccupied electronic states of the scattering atom may be determined on a shot-to-shot basis and that the measured spectral shape is independent of the large intensity fluctuations of the incoming x-ray beam. Moreover, we demonstrate the chemical sensitivity and single-shot capability and limitations of HEROS, which enables the technique to track the electronic structural dynamics in matter on femtosecond time scales, making it an ideal probe technique for time-resolved X-ray experiments.

Knowledge of the structure of biological macromolecules, especially in their native environment, is crucial because of the close structure-function relationship. X-ray small-angle scattering is used to determine the shape of particles in solution, but the achievable resolution is limited owing to averaging over particle orientations. In 1977, Kam proposed to obtain additional structural information from the cross-correlation of the scattering intensities. Here we develop the method in two dimensions, and give a procedure by which the single-particle diffraction pattern is extracted in a model-independent way from the correlations. We demonstrate its application to a large set of synchrotron X-ray scattering images on ensembles of identical, randomly oriented particles of 350 or 200 nm in size. The obtained 15 nm resolution in the reconstructed shape is independent of the number of scatterers. The results are discussed in view of proposed 'snapshot' scattering by molecules in the liquid phase at X-ray free-electron lasers.
