RESUMEN

The solar cell and light-emitting device research community is currently focusing on investigating two-dimensional (2D) hybrid perovskite materials owing to their remarkable stability and intriguing optoelectronic characteristics, which hold significant promise for various applications. In general, the introduction of chirality in hybrid perovskites arises from symmetry breaking within their inorganic frameworks. Nevertheless, despite this understanding, the specific factors driving the observed increase in splitting remain obscure due to a lack of comprehensive investigations. Our research delves into the electronic properties of 2D layered hybrid perovskites, considering their behavior with and without spin-orbit coupling. We specifically focus on effect of Rashba splitting and the impact of electronic structure variation across a range of chiral perovskites by introducing chiral organic cations with differing degrees of π-conjugation, resulting in significant changes in spin-splitting magnitude. Systematic first principles investigations confirm that the distortion of the cage and d-spacing of chiral perovskites are crucial design parameters for achieving strong spin-splitting in 2D layered perovskites. Furthermore, our investigation reveals that these systems exhibit remarkable absorption capabilities in the visible light spectrum, as demonstrated by their computed optoelectronic characteristics. The chiral perovskites described in this study, which exhibit substantial spin-splitting, present a distinctive prototype with potential implications for spintronics and photovoltaics.

The meta-analysis aimed to assess the efficiency of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in the management of burn wounds (BWs). Using dichotomous or contentious random- or fixed-effects models, the outcomes of this meta-analysis were examined and the odds ratio (OR) and the mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were computed. Thirteen examinations from 2009 to 2023 were enrolled for the present meta-analysis, including 808 individuals with BWs. PRP had significantly shorter healing time (MD, -5.80; 95% CI, -7.73 to -3.88, p < 0.001), higher healing rate (OR, 3.14; 95% CI, 2.05-4.80, p < 0.001), higher healed area percent (MD, 12.67; 95% CI, 9.79-15.55, p < 0.001) and higher graft take area percent (MD, 4.39; 95% CI, 1.51-7.26, p = 0.003) compared with standard therapy in patients with BW. However, no significant difference was found between PRP and standard therapy in graft take ratio (OR, 1.70; 95% CI, 0.86-3.34, p = 0.13) and infection rate (OR, 0.55; 95% CI, 0.20-1.47, p = 0.23) in patients with BW. The examined data revealed that PRP had a significantly shorter healing time, a higher healing rate, a higher healed area percent and a higher graft take area percent; however, no significant difference was found in graft take ratio or infection rate compared with standard therapy in patients with BW. Yet, attention should be paid to its values since all of the selected examinations had a low sample size and some comparisons had a low number of selected studies.

Experiments have assessed various polymer composites for radiation shielding in diverse applications. These composites are lighter and non-toxic when compared to lead (Pb), making them particularly effective in diagnostic imaging for shielding against low-energy photons. This study demonstrates the fabrication of four composites by combining a base material, specifically a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) polymer, with 10% and 20% silicon (Si) and silicon carbide (SiC), respectively. Additionally, 5% molybdenum (Mo) was incorporated into the composites as a heavy metal element. The composites obtained were fabricated into 20 disks with a uniform thickness of 2 mm each. Discs were exposed to radiation from a low-energy X-ray source (32.5-64.5 keV). The chemical and physical properties of composites were assessed. The shielding ability of samples was evaluated by determining the linear and mass attenuation coefficients (µ and µm), radiation protection efficiency (RPE), half-value layer (HVL), and mean free path (MFP). According to our findings, supplementing HDPE with additives improved the attenuation of beams. The µm values showed that composite X-ray shielding characteristics were enhanced with filler concentration for both Si and SiC. Polymer composites with micro-molecule fillers shelter X-rays better than polymers, especially at low energy. The HVL and MFB values of the filler are lower than those of the pure HDPE sample, indicating that less thickness is needed to shield at the appropriate energy. HC-20 blocked 92% of the incident beam at 32.5 keV. This study found that increasing the composite sample thickness or polymer filler percentage could shield against low-energy radiation.

Background: The present study evaluated the effect of a bioceramic intracanal medicament (Bio-C Temp) on the push-out bond strength of bioceramic cements. Methods: Forty-eight human single-canaled premolars were prepared and randomly divided into three groups: Group (A) received no intracanal medicament; Group (B) calcium hydroxide (CH); and Group (C) Bio-C Temp. After medicament removal, the roots were sectioned transversely. The slices in each group were separated into two subgroups (n = 16): in Subgroup (1), mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) was placed, and in Subgroup (2) Bio-C Repair. Push-out bond strength was determined using a universal testing machine, applying a constant compressive force on the cement until bond failure. The failure mode was also evaluated. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test and two-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post hoc tests. The level of significance was set at 5%. Results: The pushout bond strength of Bio-C Repair was significantly higher than that of MTA irrespective of intracanal medication (p = 0.005). The placement of Bio-C Temp was associated with significantly lower bond strength (p = 0.002, p = 0.001). Conclusion: Bio-C Repair showed better bond strength compared to MTA, irrespective of intracanal medication. Bio-C Temp intracanal medicament, however, decreased the bond strength of both these cements.

RESUMEN

A persistent stapedial artery (PSA) is a rare embryologic remnant that typically involutes at week 10 of embryogenesis. However, if it is persistent, it may lead to conductive hearing loss and pulsatile tinnitus. It is of utmost importance to identify such an anomaly, as it leads to serious complications intraoperatively if overlooked. Proper clinical and radiological assessment helps an otologist recognize the PSA. We describe the case of a 24-year-old female presenting with a chronically discharging ear in addition to pulsatile tinnitus and conductive hearing loss with an incidental finding of a PSA upon otoscopy.

INTRODUCTION: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder characterized by the presence of a mutated form of hemoglobin (Hb) known as sickle hemoglobin (HbS). Individuals with SCD are susceptible to a variety of osteoarticular complications. Osteomyelitis is a commonly seen infection affecting the tibia, diaphysis of the femur and humerus, and vertebras. AIM: The aim of this study was to define the indicators suggesting the diagnosis of osteomyelitis in patients with SCD. METHODS: This study is a descriptive, analytical, non-interventional, prospective study of pediatric patients with SCD admitted with vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC) and/or osteomyelitis, which were identified by laboratory and radiological features. Retrospective data was included for patients who met the inclusion criteria. The statistical analysis included a description of the primary and secondary outcomes in the cohort. RESULTS: A total of 28 children were included in this study. Participants' ages ranged from 11 months to 13 years. Males represented the majority (64.3%) of the participants. The blood culture of most of the participants (89.3%) showed no growth; however, 7.1% had salmonella, and only 3.6% had Gram-positive cocci. Most cases (75%) had leukocytosis. Thrombocytosis was present mainly in patients with VOC (40%). CRP was 1-4.9 mg/dL, mainly in patients with osteomyelitis (50%). The ferritin level exceeded 5000 ng/mL in patients with osteomyelitis or both osteomyelitis and VOC (50%). Ultrasound examinations revealed no hip effusion in 24 of the 28 examined patients. A plain X-ray examination showed no abnormality in 24 out of the 28 examined cases; with MRI, three cases exhibited marrow edema with bone enhancement, two (66.7%) were complicated by osteomyelitis, and the last (33.3%) had osteomyelitis and VOC. Aspiration was performed only in seven of the 28 examined, of which six (85.7%) were complicated by osteomyelitis, while the last one (14.3%) had acute chest syndrome. CONCLUSION: Based on the outcomes of this study, we recommend an individualized multidisciplinary examination (hematology, infectious disease, orthopedic surgery, and interventional radiology) for SCD patients with suspected osteomyelitis admitted with VOC, considering the entire clinical history and laboratory and MRI results.

OBJECTIVES: Assess the Saudi pharmacists' perceptions of their responsibilities toward deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) patients, their current practices, and their need for communication skills training. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective cross-sectional study. METHODS: Pharmacist and deaf communication questionnaire (PDCQ), a newly structured, validated, pilot-tested, and self-administered online questionnaire, was used to collect data. A total of 303 pharmacists working in the Saudi community and outpatient pharmacies participated in the study. Data were analyzed using SPSS and descriptive statistics were used to describe the study findings. These included Mean ± standard deviation (SD), frequency, and Chi-square tests. RESULTS: Most pharmacists perceived that DHH patients had difficulty correctly understanding their medication instructions. Writing was the most common method used for communication, whereas the unavailability of interpreters and the low reading levels of these patients were the highest barriers to communication. Moreover, most pharmacists believed that they should be skilled at communicating with DHH patients. However, many pharmacists felt that they are not well prepared to communicate with these patients. CONCLUSION: This research highlights the poor skills, low confidence and low knowledge Saudi pharmacists have about their legal obligations towards DHH patients. In addition, there is paucity of sufficient resources to help pharmacists improve their communication with such patients.

Periodontal and peri-implant soft and hard tissue in diabetic patients have always been a topic of interest for researchers and clinicians alike. Among which, a subtopic that has attracted more attention is the beneficial effect of metformin (MF) on periodontal and peri-implant soft and hard tissue. This review aimed to assess the impact of MF on the periodontal and peri-implant soft- and hard-tissue healing among diabetic patients. Research was conducted using the keywords 'metformin', 'diabetes', 'periodontitis', 'implant', and 'peri-implantitis' via the Medline (PubMed) and Google Scholar databases. Selected articles were reviewed. A total of 21 articles, discussing the impact on periodontal health (six animal studies, seven clinical studies, and three systematic reviews) and five studies on peri-implant health (four animal studies and one clinical study) were included. All have reported a positive impact of MF on decreasing the inflammatory response, oxidative stress, and ultimate bone loss. Similarly, human studies reported a positive effect of MF on clinical and radiographic parameters compared with controls. Despite systematic reviews reporting heterogeneity among the included studies, MF has shown a positive impact on periodontal health. In animal, clinical studies, and systematic reviews, MF showed a protective impact on periodontal and peri-implant health.

OBJECTIVE: Measuring Saudi women's subjective happiness during the present period that has brought great transformations in gender equality in KSA is essential to gather reliable information about the present situation of women in KSA. This study intends to test the validity and reliability of the 'Subjective Happiness Scale' Arabic version (SHS-A) when applied to Saudi working women. This study also examines the factors that affect the subjective happiness of Saudi working women. METHODS: This validation study was conducted among 300 Saudi working women to test the psychometric properties of the SHS-A. Validity was evaluated using principal component analysis (PCA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Multiple regression analysis was also carried out to examine the factors affecting subjective happiness. RESULTS: The PCA identified one factor that explained approximately 66.0% of the variance of the model. The CFA revealed the following findings: normed fit index = 0.982, comparative fit index = 0.990, Tucker-Lewis index = 0.971, goodness-of-fit index = 0.986, adjusted goodness-of-fit index = 0.929, and root mean square error of approximation = 0.086. The x 2/df value was 2.09 (x 2 = 4.189, p = .123). The Cronbach's alpha of the SHS-A in the first and second samples was 0.824 and 0.830, respectively. Employment position, working hours, and monthly salary were found to influence the subjective happiness of Saudi working women. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides evidence that supports the validity and reliability of the SHS-A when used among Saudi working women. This valid and reliable tool can open further avenues and opportunities for advancing women's research agenda in KSA and other Arabic-speaking countries for economic and societal progress.

In a country such as Saudi Arabia where gender equality-related challenges continue to be social issues, measuring the health empowerment of Saudi working women is critical in understanding the real picture of women empowerment in the country during this era of great transformation. Therefore, we conducted this research to evaluate psychometric properties of the Health Empowerment Scale Arabic version (HES-A) in measuring the health empowerment of Saudi working women. We surveyed a sample of 322 Saudi working women from June to August 2020 using an online survey constituting questions on demographic and work-related information and the HES-A. The computed values for the item-level content validity index of the 8 scale items were from .80 and 1.00, whereas the computed value of the scale-level content validity index by average method was .91. The principal component and confirmatory factor analyses revealed a unidimentional scale. The computation revealed an alpha of .92. Education, type of employment, years of working experience, and salary were identified as significant factors influencing the health empowerment. The HES-A exhibited adequate validity and internal consistency for use in measuring the health empowerment of Saudi women. The HES-A can expand the research agenda on health empowerment Arab women. Researchers and policymakers could use the HES-A in assessing the status of health empowerment of Arabic-speaking women, which could inform policies and interventions aimed at ensuring health empowered women in this part of the globe.

The objective of this study was to design the screens of a future gamified mobile application for self-management of type 1 diabetes in children based on the opinion of caregivers at the King Fahad Hospital Diabetes Center, Saudi Arabia. To achieve this objective, a questionnaire was designed and distributed among 100 caregivers through face-to-face communication and social media using a Google Forms link. 65% of the participants met the inclusion criteria. The main result of this study was the design of 13 screens of a gamified application for self-management of type 1 diabetes in children from Saudi Arabia. The key features of the screens were caring for a character; using a challenging friend; inclusion of points, level, and leaderboard as rewarding principles; use of reminders and notifications for doctor's appointments, insulin injection times, blood glucose readings; and tips for improving medication adherence, increasing blood glucose readings, supporting physical activities, and adopting healthy eating habits. It can be concluded that the practical implementation of the screens in a future mobile application can motivate children with type 1 diabetes to improve eating habits, physical exercise, and cognitive, emotional, and social behaviors to maintain a stable state of health. Also, the content of the designed screens can help to monitor blood glucose readings and comply with medication treatment. The designed screens are adapted to the Arab culture.

PURPOSE: To determine the frequency, types, and determinants of diagnostic errors in clinical FDG-PET/CT, based on addenda to the original report. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 4,099 consecutive clinical FDG-PET/CT scans with corresponding reports that were made at a tertiary care center in an 18-month period. FDG-PET/CT reports were scrutinized for the presence of an addendum enclosing a diagnostic error. RESULTS: 90 of 4,099 FDG-PET/CT reports (2.2%) contained an addendum enclosing a diagnostic error. The distribution of perceptual and cognitive errors among these 90 diagnostic errors was 54 (60.0%)/36 (40.0%). On multivariate logistic regression analysis, only low-dose FDG-PET/CT combined with concomitantly acquired and interpreted full-dose contrast-enhanced CT remained as significantly and independently associated with the presence of a diagnostic error, relative to low-dose FDG-PET/CT without concomitantly acquired and interpreted full-dose contrast-enhanced CT (odds ratio: 2.79 [95% confidence interval: 1.61-4.85], P < 0.001). Patient age, gender, hospital status, indication for FDG-PET/CT scanning, single vs. double reading (i.e. two medical imaging specialists), reader experience, and reading by a nuclear medicine physician only vs. reading by both a nuclear medicine physician and a radiologist, were not significantly and independently associated with the presence of a diagnostic error. CONCLUSION: Diagnostic errors in clinical FDG-PET/CT based on addenda to the original report are relatively infrequent, though certainly non-negligible. Perceptual errors are slightly more frequent than cognitive errors. The availability of a concomitantly acquired and interpreted full-dose contrast-enhanced CT seems to increase diagnostic error rate. These data can be used for quality improvement and benchmarking purposes.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to review most of the existing free m-Health applications (Apps) that use the gamification approach to manage diabetes type 1 in both App and Google Play stores. METHODS: Free mobile health applications "apps" that were related to diabetes mellitus have been identified in both App and Google Play stores. In order to cover all the mentioned applications, the following keywords, "game for type 1 diabetes" and "gamification for type 1 diabetes" were used in English and Arabic languages. All applications that were collected in the inclusion process were carefully analyzed, and the game name, game description, game features, game mechanics, game themes, and operating systems were recorded. RESULTS: A total of eight gamified applications related to type 1 diabetes were identified. Seven of these applications were in English language and only one application was in Arabic language. The applications were categorized into three main categories based on the theme of the application. The categories were taking care of a character, quizzes, and the storytelling theme. Moreover, there was no application that included the social networking feature. CONCLUSION: This study highlighted the most important features of the free mobile health applications "apps" for diabetes type 1 available in Google Play and App stores that can contribute to enhance the self-management of the diabetes condition by patients in Saudi Arabia. The identified applications have important characteristics that can be used in the future for the care and self-control of type 1 diabetic patients in Saudi Arabia.

Substandard antibiotics are thought to be a major threat to public health in developing countries and a cause of antimicrobial resistance. However, assessing quality outside of a laboratory setting, using simple equipment, is challenging. The aim of this study was to validate the use of a portable Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometer for the identification of substandard antibiotics. Results are presented for amoxicillin packages from Haiti, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Democratic Republic of Congo, India, Papua New Guinea, and Ethiopia collected over the course of 6 months in 2017, including two field trips with the FT-IR to Ghana and Sierra Leone. Canadian samples were used as a control. Regarding drug quality, of 290 individual capsules of amoxicillin analyzed, 13 were found to be substandard with total active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) lying outside the acceptable range of 90-110%. Of these 13, four were below 80% API. The FT-IR reliably identified these outliers and was found to yield results in good agreement with the established pharmacopeia liquid chromatography protocol. We conclude that the portable FT-IR may be suitable to intercept substandard antibiotics in developing countries where more sophisticated techniques are not readily available.
