RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant public health problem adversely affecting mothers, their newborns, and other members of the family. Although PPD is common and potentially dangerous, only a minority of the cases are identified in primary health care settings during routine care, and the majority of depressed mothers in the community lies unrecognized and therefore untreated. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In this study, a total of 1500 mothers were approached randomly, 808 accepted to participate, and 504 were within the inclusion criteria (women who had a birth of a singleton full-term healthy infant, had an uncomplicated pregnancy, and were within their one week to six months postpartum). The participants completed the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. RESULTS: A total of 168 women had an EPDS score ≥10, yielding a crude prevalence rate of 33%. The prevalence of suicidal ideation was 14 out of 504 (3%), among which 11 (79%) had EPDS score of ≥10. We fitted multiple linear regression models to evaluate the predictors of variables measured on the EPDS scale. This model was statistically significant p<0.0001 in predicting the total EPDS score. Women's employment status, baby's birth weight, stressful life event and marital conflict were statistically significant predictors. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study are anticipated to entail the government and policy makers in the region to pay more attention to the apparently high prevalence of unrevealed PPD in the community. It is crucial to enhance screening mechanisms for early detection, providing interventions to manage symptoms, and at the same time mandating local guidelines to address the PPD pathology as a high priority for the UAE population.

RESUMEN

Bronchial artery embolization (BAE) is a procedure that aims to control bleeding from bronchial arteries in massive and chronic haemoptysis. It is considered to be a life-saving measure in severe life-threatening haemoptysis. Although it is minimally invasive and has a high success rate, it still carries a list of complications. These include post-embolisation syndrome, chest pain, back pain, dysphagia, vascular injury at the site of the embolisation leading to dissection, perforation, pseudoaneurysm and, very rarely, embolic infarction to non-target vessels. Stroke is one of the rare complications post BAE, and it can be severe and fatal. Few cases of stroke post BAE have been reported in the literature, and they were mainly due to posterior cerebral circulation infarction. Here, we report a case of a stroke post BAE due to massive middle cerebral artery (MCA) infarction and to our knowledge it seems to be the first reported case of MCA infarction post BAE. The discussion will cover the possible mechanisms of embolic passage, the outcome of the case including rehabilitation perspectives and the learning points. These will also highlight the importance of early recognition, which can save patients from a disabling stroke in the future. LEARNING POINTS: Bronchial artery embolisation (BAE) carries a high risk of significant complications such as transverse myelitis, bronchial infraction, ischaemic colitis and stroke. While stroke remains one of the rarest complication post BAE, it may be under-reported or unrecognised.Close monitoring in post-BAE patients for any abnormal neurological signs that warrant urgent brain imaging, and early recognition can save patients from a disabling stroke by having the appropriate hyperactive stroke management plan including mechanical thrombectomy.

RESUMEN

Designing a broadband, wide-angle, and high-efficient polarization converter with a simple geometry remains challenging. This work proposes a simple and computationally inexpensive method for devising broadband polarization conversion metasurfaces. We focus on a cross-shape configuration consisting of two bars of different lengths connected at the center. To design the metasurface, we decompose the system into two parts with two orthogonally polarized responses and calculate the response of each part separately. By selecting the parameters with a proper phase difference in the response between the two parts, we can determine the dimensions of the system. For designing broadband polarization conversion metasurfaces, we define a fitness function to optimize the bandwidth of the linear polarization conversion. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed method can be used to design a metasurface that achieves a relative bandwidth of [Formula: see text] for converting linearly polarized waves into cross-polarized waves. Additionally, the average polarization conversion ratio of the designed metasurface is greater than [Formula: see text] over the frequency range of 10.9-28.5 GHz. This method significantly reduces the computational expense compared to the traditional method and can be easily extended to other complex structures and configurations.

RESUMEN

Background: Physiotherapy is an essential component of paediatric burn treatment. Children are admitted to the paediatric burn unit with their caregivers who play a vital role in supporting the child's post-burn physiotherapy management. Objective: The objective of the study is to determine caregivers' attitudes on physiotherapy treatment for children with burns in the UAE. This study focused on the caregiver's perspective on five important domains: caregiver's knowledge, burden, attitude, adherence to physiotherapy exercise program, and caregiver's satisfaction. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted using self-administered questionnaire. Fifty caregivers were eligible to participate in the study. The analyses of the survey responses were done using SPSS software. Descriptive analysis and correlation statistics were used to present the data. Results: The caregiver participants in the study reported to have reasonably good knowledge about the paediatric burns care (13.62 ± 3.49) and had a positive attitude towards the physiotherapy treatment provided to the children with the burn injuries (9.41 ± 1.56). The adherence to the prescribed exercise regimen of physiotherapy sessions was found to be good (11.88 ± 1.50) but were overburdened with the caregiving tasks (21.42 ± 11.62). The study demonstrated very high levels of satisfaction among the caregivers with the physiotherapy treatment sessions provided to the children (13.4 ± 1.83). Conclusion: Caregiver attitude regarding physiotherapy management was overall positive; caregivers were well aware of the importance of physiotherapy and have reported high levels of satisfaction with the paediatric burn physiotherapy management.
