We investigated SNPs in alternative oxidase (AOX) genes and their connection to ecotype origins (climate, altitude, and rainfall) by using genomic data sets of Arabidopsis and rice populations from 1190 and 90 ecotypes, respectively. Parameters were defined to detect non-synonymous SNPs in the AOX ORF, which revealed amino acid (AA) changes in AOX1c, AOX1d, and AOX2 from Arabidopsis and AOX1c from rice in comparison to AOX references from Columbia-0 and Japonica ecotypes, respectively. Among these AA changes, Arabidopsis AOX1c_A161E&G165R and AOX1c_R242S revealed a link to high rainfall and high altitude, respectively, while all other changes in Arabidopsis and rice AOX was connected to high altitude and rainfall. Comparative 3D modeling showed that all mutant AOX presented structural differences in relation to the respective references. Molecular docking analysis uncovered lower binding affinity values between AOX and the substrate ubiquinol for most of the identified structures compared to their reference, indicating better enzyme-substrate binding affinities. Thus, our in silico data suggest that the majority of the AA changes found in the available ecotypes will confer better enzyme-subtract interactions and thus indicate environment-related, more efficient AOX activity.

As a famous health food, roots of Panax quinquefolium L. possessed immune regulation and enhancement of the central nervous system, in which ginsenosides are the main active component with different numbers and positions of sugars, causing different chemical polarities with a challenge for the separation and isolation. In this study, a fast and effective bilinear gradient counter-current chromatography was proposed for preparative isolation ginsenosides with a broad partition coefficient range from roots of Panax quinquefolium L. In terms of the established method, the mobile phases comprising n-butanol and ethyl acetate were achieved by adjusting the proportion. Coupled with the preparative HPLC, eleven main ginsenosides were successfully separated, including ginsenoside Rg1 (1), Re (2), acetyl ginsenoside Rg1 (3), Rb1 (4), Rc (5), Rg2 (6), Rb3 (7), quinquefolium R1 (8), Rd (9), gypenoside X VII (10) and notoginsenoside Fd (11), with purities exceeding 95% according to the HPLC results. Tandem mass spectrometry and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry were adopted for recognizing the isolated compound architectures. Our study suggests that linear gradient counter-current chromatography effectively separates the broad partition coefficient range of ginsenosides compounds from the roots of Panax quinquefolium L. In addition, it can apply to active compound isolation from other complicated natural products.

Bergenia ciliata (haw.) Sternb, the renowned pharmaceutical plant in Jammu and Kashmir of Pakistan, is widely applied in treating different illnesses including diabetes, diarrhea, and vomiting. This work employed an efficient one-step inner-recycling counter-current chromatography for preparative separating and purifying compounds with similar partition coefficients from the rhizome of Bergenia ciliate (haw.). Five compounds, including quercetin rhamnodiglucoside (1), quercetin-3-O-rutinoside (2), bergenine (3), kaempferol (4), and palmatic acid (5), were successfully separated using the optimized biphasic solvent system that contained ter-butylmetylether/n-butanol/acetonitrile/water (2:2:1:5, v/v) with the purities over 98%. Mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance were conducted for structural identification. As a result, our proposed strategy might be applied in separating compounds with similar partition coefficients, which was advantageous with regard to the less solvent and time consumption, and the increased number of theoretical plates.

In this work, the preparative separation of quinolyridine alkaloids from seeds of T. lanceolata by conventional and pH-zone-refining counter-current chromatography. Traditional counter-current chromatography separation was performed by a flow-rate changing strategy with a solvent system of ethyl acetate-n-butanol-water (1:9:10, v/v) and 200 mg sample loading. Meanwhile, the pH-zone-refining mode was adopted for separating 2.0 g crude alkaloid extracts with the chloroform-methanol-water (4:3:3, v/v) solvent system using the stationary and mobile phases of 40 mM hydrochloric acid and 10 mM triethylamine. Finally, six compounds, including N-formylcytisine (two conformers) (1), N-acetycytisine (two conformers) (2), (-)-cytisine (3), 13-ß-hydroxylthermopsine (4), N-methylcytisine (5), and thermopsine (6) were successfully obtained in the two counter-current chromatography modes with the purities over 96.5%. Moreover, we adopted nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry for structural characterization. Based on the obtained findings, the pH-zone-refining mode was the efficient method to separate quinolyridine alkaloids relative to the traditional mode.

Cyperus rotundus L. has been extensively used in ancient medication for the treatment of different disorders worldwide, in which sesquiterpenes are the most representative components. In this study, sesquiterpenes were effectively purified by two-dimensional counter-current chromatography in combination with continuous injection and inner-recycling mode with a solvent system of n-hexane/ethyl acetate/methanol/water (1:0.2:1:0.2, v/v/v/v). For one-dimension separation, continuous injection mode was used with three times injection and the inner-recycling mode was adopted for the separation of two mixtures for two-dimensional separation. Finally, four sesquiterpenoids, including scariodione (1), cyperenoic acid (2), scariodione (3), and α-cyperone (4), were obtained with purities over 98%. Mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance were applied to identify their structures. The results from the anti-inflammation effect with zebrafish demonstrated that cyperenoic acid exhibited stronger anti-inflammation activity. Molecular docking results suggested that cyperenoic acid possessed lower binding energies -9.4545 kcal/mol with 1CX2 to form formed hydrogen bond interaction with ARG120. In general, all the obtained findings proved that the strong anti-inflammation capacity of cyperenoic acid can have the potential of being adopted for treating diseases resulting from inflammation.

Background and Objectives: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is an autoimmune, mucocutaneous, oral potentially malignant disorder (OPMD), which characteristically manifests with chronic, recalcitrant lesions, with frequent flare-ups and remissions. The precise etiopathogenesis of OLP is still debatable, although it is believed to be a T-cell-mediated disorder of an unidentified antigen. Despite the availability of various treatments, no cure for OLP exists due to its recalcitrant nature and idiopathic etiology. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties, in addition to its regulatory action on keratinocyte differentiation and proliferation. These salient properties substantiate the possible role of PRP in the treatment of OLP. Our systematic review focuses on assessing the therapeutic potential of PRP as a treatment modality in OLP. Materials and Methods: We conducted a detailed literature search for studies assessing PRP as a therapeutic regimen in OLP, using the Google Scholar and PubMed/MEDLINE search engines. The search was limited to studies published from January 2000 to January 2023 and included a combination of Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) terms. ROBVIS analysis was carried out for the assessment of publication bias. Descriptive statistics were performed using Microsoft Excel. Results: This systematic review included five articles that met the inclusion criteria. Most of the included studies demonstrated that PRP treatment considerably ameliorated both objective and subjective symptoms in OLP subjects, with comparable efficacy to the standard corticosteroid treatment. Further, PRP therapy offers the added benefit of minimal adverse effects and recurrences. Conclusion: This systematic review suggests that PRP has significant therapeutic potential for treating OLP. However, further research with larger sample sizes is imperative to corroborate these findings.

KEY MESSAGE: We found 34 and 71 key genes potentially involved in flavonoid biosynthesis and cell wall disassembly, respectively, which could be associated with specific peel coloration and softening of each genotype. Cashew apple (Anacardium occidentale) has a great economic importance worldwide due to its high nutritional value, peculiar flavor and aroma. During ripening, the peduncle develops different peel color and becomes quickly fragile due to its oversoftening, impacting its consumers' acceptance. In view of this, the understanding about its transcriptional dynamics throughout ripening is imperative. In this study, we performed a transcriptome sequencing of two cashew apple genotypes (CCP 76 and BRS 265), presenting different firmness and color peel, in the immature and ripe stages. Comparative transcriptome analysis between immature and ripe cashew apple revealed 4374 and 3266 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) to CCP 76 and BRS 265 genotypes, respectively. These genes included 71 and 34 GDEs involved in the cell wall disassembly and flavonoid biosynthesis, respectively, which could be associated with firmness loss and anthocyanin accumulation during cashew apple development. Then, softer peduncle of CCP 76 could be justified by down-regulated EXP and up-regulation of genes involved in pectin degradation (PG, PL and PAE) and in cell wall biosynthesis. Moreover, genes related to flavonoid biosynthesis (PAL, C4H and CHS) could be associated with early high accumulation of anthocyanin in red-peel peduncle of BRS 265. Finally, expression patterns of the selected genes were tested by real-time quantitative PCR (qRT-PCR), and the qRT-PCR results were consistent with transcriptome data. The information generated in this work will provide insights into transcriptome responses to cashew apple ripening and hence, it will be helpful for cashew breeding programs aimed at developing genotypes with improved quality traits.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 isolated dextrogastria in conjunction with protrusion of the right hemidiaphragm and hiatal hernia is an uncommon anomaly among all transpositions of the viscera. Clear diagnosis is not straightforward in such cases both clinically and with various imaging techniques leaving often only laparotomy for diagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we discuss the case of a so far asymptomatic 19-year-old male, who had a 3-month history of abdominal pain and 2 days of vomiting with absolute constipation, and reduced air entry in the base of the right lung. A large air fluid level was found in the right lower hemithorax, furthermore, a loss of the normal diaphragmatic outline, and paucity of the bowel gases in the rest of the abdomen. Computer tomography with contrast was suggestive of loss of right lung volume, with stomach and bowel loops herniating into the right hemithorax and compressive atelactatic changes in the adjacent lung alongside an enlarged liver. A barium test showed the stomach fundus and body posteriorly positioned, while both duodenal bulb loops and the duodeno-jejunal junction alongside the small and large bowels were detected in their normal positions. CONCLUSION: In case of visceral transpositions, routine diagnostic blood and radiological tests may lead the health care provider to misdiagnosis. It is necessary, in particular when surgery is required, to carefully elucidate the organ anomaly. The use of additional imaging and radiological methods may be called for; CT scan and a barium test were critical here. This is the first case of isolated dextrogastria with eventration of right hemidiaphragm and hiatal hernia reported from Pakistan providing insights for diagnostic procedures.

A reverse-offset printed temperature sensor based on interdigitated electrodes (IDTs) has been investigated in this study. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were printed on a glass slide in an IDT pattern by reverse-offset printer. The sensing layer consisted of a sucrose film obtained by spin coating the sucrose solution on the IDTs. The temperature sensor demonstrated a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) with an exponential decrease in resistance as the temperature increased. This trend is the characteristic of a NTC thermistor. There is an overall change of ~2800 kΩ for the temperature change of 0 °C to 100 °C. The thermistor is based on a unique temperature sensor using a naturally occurring biocompatible material, i.e., sucrose. The active sensing material of the thermistor, i.e., sucrose used in the experiments was obtained from extract of Muscovado. Our temperature sensor has potential in the biomedical and food industries where environmentally friendly and biocompatible materials are more suitable for sensing accurately and reliably.

Wearable sweat sensors offer the possibility of continuous real-time health monitoring of an individual at a low cost without invasion. A variety of sweat glucose sensors have been developed thus far to help diabetes patients frequently monitor blood glucose levels through sweat glucose as a surrogate marker. The present study demonstrates the development and characterization of a three-dimensional paper-based microfluidic electrochemical integrated device (3D PMED) for measuring glucose concentration in sweat in real-time via simple, non-invasive, capillary-action-based sample collection. The device was selective for glucose, and it detected glucose accurately in the clinically relevant range (0~2 mM) in an off-body setup. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time NEXAR™ has been used for biosensing applications. Further, the developed glucose sensor has acceptable sensitivity of 16.8 µA/mM/cm2. Importantly, in an on-body setup, the device achieved a significant amperometric response to sweat glucose in a very short amount of time (a few seconds). With detailed investigations, this proof-of-concept study could help further the development of sensitive and selective sweat-based glucose sensing devices for real-time glucose monitoring in diabetes patients.

BACKGROUND: A gastric cancer (GC) diagnosis relies on histopathology. Endoscopy rates are increasing. Helicobacter pylori infection is a major GC risk factor. In an effort to elucidate abundant blood biomarkers, and potentially reduce the number of diagnostic surgical interventions, we investigated sera and biopsies from a cohort of 219 H. pylori positive and negative patients diagnosed with GC, gastritis, and ulcers. This allowed the comparative investigation of the different gastroduodenal diseases, and the exclusion of protein changes resulting from bacterial infection or inflammation of the gastric mucosa when searching for GC-dependent proteins. METHODS: High-definition mass spectrometry-based expression analysis of tryptically digested proteins was performed, followed by multivariate statistical and network analyses for the different disease groups, with respect to H. pylori infection status. Significantly regulated proteins differing more than two-fold between groups were shortlisted, and their role in gastritis and GC discussed. RESULTS: We present data of comparative protein analyses of biopsies and sera from patients suffering from mild to advanced gastritis, ulcers, and early to advanced GC, in conjunction with a wealth of metadata, clinical information, histopathological evaluation, and H. pylori infection status. We used samples from pre-malignant stages to extract prospective serum markers for early-stage GC, and present a 29-protein marker panel containing, amongst others, integrin ß-6 and glutathione peroxidase. Furthermore, ten serum markers specific for advanced GC, independent of H. pylori infection, are provided. They include CRP, protein S100A9, and kallistatin. The majority of these proteins were previously discussed in the context of cancer or GC. In addition, we detected hypoalbuminemia and increased fibrinogen serum levels in gastritis. CONCLUSION: Two protein panels were suggested for the development of multiplex tests for GC serum diagnostics. For most of the elements contained in these panels, individual commercial tests are available. Thus, we envision the design of multi-protein assays, incorporating several to all of the panel members, in order to gain a level of specificity that cannot be achieved by testing a single protein alone. As their development and validation will take time, gastritis diagnosis based on the fibrinogen to albumin serum ratio may be a quick way forward. Its determination at the primary/secondary care level for early diagnosis could significantly reduce the number of referrals to endoscopy. Preventive measures are in high demand. The protein marker panels presented in this work will contribute to improved GC diagnostics, once they have been transferred from a research result to a practical tool.

(1) Background: Gastric cancer (GC) is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Helicobacter pylori infection is a major risk factor, but other microbial species may also be involved. In the context of an earlier proteomics study of serum and biopsies of patients with gastroduodenal diseases, we explored here a simplified microbiome in these biopsies (H. pylori, Acinetobacter baumannii, Escherichia coli, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Bacteroides fragilis) on the protein level. (2) Methods: A cohort of 75 patients was divided into groups with respect to the findings of the normal gastric mucosa (NGM) and gastroduodenal disorders such as gastritis, ulcer, and gastric cancer (GC). The H. pylori infection status was determined. The protein expression analysis of the biopsy samples was carried out using high-definition mass spectrometry of the tryptic digest (label-free data-independent quantification and statistical analysis). (3) Results: The total of 304 bacterial protein matches were detected based on two or more peptide hits. Significantly regulated microbial proteins like virulence factor type IV secretion system protein CagE from H. pylori were found with more abundance in gastritis than in GC or NGM. This finding could reflect the increased microbial involvement in mucosa inflammation in line with current hypotheses. Abundant proteins across species were heat shock proteins and elongation factors. (4) Conclusions: Next to the bulk of human proteins, a number of species-specific bacterial proteins were detected in stomach biopsies of patients with gastroduodenal diseases, some of which, like those expressed by the cag pathogenicity island, may provide gateways to disease prevention without antibacterial intervention in order to reduce antibiotic resistance.

Diabetes, a metabolic disorder, is caused by a high blood sugar level. Diabetes is an increasing health issue and search for potent antidiabetic agents is desirable. Owing to its ethnomedicinal value, the Himalayan perennial herb Bergenia stracheyi (Hook. f. & Thoms.) Engl. (Saxifragaceae Juss) is used to treat diabetes. Herein, an efficient high-speed countercurrent chromatography with elution mode is reported for separation of active compounds from B. stracheyi. In current investigation, six main compounds including ß-arbutin (1), bergenin (2), 6-O-galloylarbutin (3), gallic acid (4), 11-O-galloylbergenin (5), and (-)-epicatechin 3-O-gallate (6) with above 95% purity were efficiently separated in a single run using biphasic tert-butyl methyl ether/n-butanol/methanol/water (1:3:1:5, v/v/v/v) solvent system. The structures of these compounds were characterized using spectral techniques and compared with the literature. Antidiabetic and antioxidant activities evaluation of the study samples showed that ß-arbutin (1) and 6-O-galloylarbutin (3) have a significant protective effect, especially at high dose against hydrogen peroxide induced oxidative injury. Our results might help further in-depth phytochemical and biological evaluation studies in search of potent antidiabetic compounds from B. stracheyi.

Metastatic spread of invasive lobular breast carcinoma to stomach is rare especially before diagnosis of primary breast cancer. Incorrect diagnosis might result in delay of appropriate treatment for breast cancer. Recognition of this possibility enables better clinical management. A 62-year-old female presented with upper gastrointestinal symptoms and weight loss and was referred to a gastroenterologist for investigation. At the time of initial diagnosis of stomach cancer, patient was asymptomatic for breast cancer. Multiple gastric biopsies taken showed features suspicious of metastatic breast cancer. Consequently, the initial provisional diagnosis of stomach cancer changed into metastatic invasive lobular breast carcinoma. These findings were corroborated radiologically. The patient was treated with letrozole and zoledronic acid as first-line therapy for one year. Residual metastatic breast cancer was present in the gastric mucosa. The patient was treated with endocrine therapy containing ribociclib and treatment was ineffective confirmed by PET-CT scan. But her symptoms have resolved completely despite her presentation with stage IV. We present rare case of initial presentation of gastric metastasis before diagnosis of a primary invasive lobular breast carcinoma. Correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment were accomplished through initial clinical suspicion, accurate histological examination, and endoscopy together with analysis of disease-specific biomarkers.

Folate, also known as vitamin B9, is a co-factor necessary for DNA synthesis. Folate deficiency is associated mainly with hematological findings including megaloblastic anemia and pancytopenia. Many countries have mandated grain fortification with micronutrients including folic acid resulting in a reduced prevalence of folate deficiency. Saudi Arabia imports most of the grain products and folate is usually added after milling. There are no local studies to address the folate deficiency prevalence. In this study we aimed to analyse the clinical appropriateness of ordering practice of serum Folate level. METHOD: We reviewed all serum folate requests received at our laboratory in Aseer Central Hospital over one-year period (July 2018 June 2019). We collected patients' demographics from the electronic requests along with biochemical results of serum B12, ferritin and CBC results. We assessed appropriateness of orders against pre-specified criteria and applied statistical tests to explore for any association or significance. RESULTS: Serum folate requests from 614 patients were received during the study period. Serum B12 (543, 88%), and serum ferritin (511, 83%) were concurrently requested. The most common reason for request, when available, was anemia. Anemia was present in (313, 51%) of the subjects for which microcytic anemia was predominant (199, 63.5%), followed by normocytic anemia (101, 33%) and only 10 subjects had macrocytic anemia (3.2%). The most common hematinics' deficiency was ferritin (30%) followed by B12 (17.2%). Serum folate deficiency was low, observed in only 2.8%. Low folate levels were not significantly different between the group with anemia and the normal hemoglobin group. CONCLUSION: This study identifies a commonly inappropriate serum folate ordering practice that includes ordering all hematinics at the same visit without considering the possible anemia etiologies. The excessive requests might be related to doctors attempt to avoid multiple blood extractions and to try to reduce the time for diagnosis. These policies are generating unnecessary costs and time loss. Education, phasing out or restricting some tests and introducing laboratory policies like sample storing could help reduce unnecessary requests.

The Kho population speaking Khowar language reside since long ago in Chitral District of North-western Pakistan. So far, no report is available about their genetic structure and relationship with surrounding population groups. We partially sequenced the mitochondrial DNA control region from 16 unrelated Kho male and female individuals of different ages. The D-Loop region sequences of Kho were aligned and compared with the revised Cambridge Reference Sequence (rCRS). The genetic data of Kho was compared with surrounding north-western Pakistani population groups including Pathan, Kashmiri, and Hazara. Comparison with rCRS identified overall 49 different haplotypes for Kho samples. Among these 21 haplotypes were shared by more than one Kho individuals. The genetic diversity and power of discrimination observed for Kho group were 0.215 and 0.202 respectively indicating the Kho tribe as a least differentiated group among north-western Pakistani populations. The haplogroup mapping, phylogenetic and haplotype network analysis revealed the nearby maternal ancestral relationship between Kho and Kashmiri populations. The haplogroups analysis demonstrates the western Eurasian ancestral origin of Kho samples. However, the appearance of a few South Asian haplogroups with low frequency speculate the Kho tribe as an admixed population of western Eurasian and South Asian genetic components.

Ingestion of a toxic dose of the analgesic drug, acetaminophen (also called paracetamol or APAP), is among the most common causes of acute liver injury in humans. We tested the hypothesis that the combined polyphenolic compounds, resveratrol (RES) and quercetin (QUR), can substantially protect against hepatocyte ultrastructural damage induced by a toxic dose of APAP in a rat model of APAP-induced acute liver injury. The model group of rats received a single dose of APAP (2 g/kg), whereas the protective group of rats was pretreated for 7 days with combined doses of RES (30 mg/kg) and QUR (50 mg/kg) before being given a single dose of APAP. All rats were then sacrificed 24 hours post APAP ingestion. Harvested liver tissues were prepared for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) staining, and liver homogenates were assayed for biomarkers of inflammation, such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), and oxidative stress, such as malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). In addition, blood samples were assayed for the liver injury enzyme alanine aminotransferase (ALT) as an indicator of liver damage. TEM images showed that APAP overdose induced acute liver injury as demonstrated by profound hepatocyte ultrastructural alterations, which were substantially protected by RES+QUR. In addition, APAP significantly (p < 0.05) modulated TNF-α, IL-6, MDA, SOD, GPx, and ALT biomarkers, which were completely protected by RES+QUR. Thus, RES+QUR effectively protects against APAP-induced acute liver injury in rats, possibly via the inhibition of inflammation and oxidative stress.

BACKGROUND: Surgical residents increasingly seek global surgery (GS) experiences during training. Understanding their motives and goals is important to develop the optimal educational programs. A survey for surgical residents was developed to explore this interest. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A survey administered in 2016 to residents in three surgical programs within the same academic institution assessed interest, prior global health experience, preferred training opportunities, and career goals in GS. RESULTS: Seventy-four surgical residents responded (78%) with 82% expressing interest in GS and 86% motivated by a desire for volunteerism. International electives (65%) and volunteer missions (49%) were the preferred experiences during residency over longer commitments such as advanced degrees. A majority of residents planned to incorporate GS into their career (76%) most commonly by volunteering on missions (70%) with a smaller group aiming for a career in GS (13%). Residents with prior global health experience (n = 27, 36%) showed greater interest in GS (96% versus 72%, P = 0.02) and a commitment after residency (93% versus 68%, P = 0.02), and trended toward greater interest in GS careers (22% versus 6%, P = 0.06). CONCLUSIONS: Institutional interest in GS remains high among surgical residents, motivated primarily by a desire for volunteerism. Following training, most residents plan to participate in short-term volunteer commitments, though a small group envisions GS as part of their long-term career goals. Prior global health experience is associated with interest in GS both in the present and long term. Providing these experiences early may be a strategy to support academic interest.

OBJECTIVE: To compare direct smear technique with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) preserved smear technique in terms of preparing bone marrow aspirate slides. METHODS: This prospective study was carried out between September 2009 and July 2012 at the Haematology/Oncology Department, King Khalid University Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. With a standard gauge disposable bone marrow aspirate needle, 0.5 to 1.0 ml bone marrow was aspirated with a 10ml syringe. Half of the marrow was immediately transferred to an EDTA tube with gentle mixing, while slides were prepared directly from the rest of the sample in the syringe. The tube sample was used to prepare slides at the end of the procedure. A score of 1-4 was assigned to each slide depending on the quality and number of particles. RESULTS: A total of 245 bone marrow aspirate samples were evaluated related to 216 patients. Of the total, 238 (97%) samples were included in the study. The mean score for the direct smear group was 3.40±0.79 and for the EDTA smear group it was 3.34±0.75 (p=0.27), which was not statistically significant. An informal comparison of the morphological analysis of the samples did not reveal any differences. CONCLUSIONS: Bone marrow aspirate slides prepared at the end of the procedure from EDTA preserved samples were not inferior to slides prepared directly from the aspirated sample.

RESUMEN

The bark and fruit extracts of Elaeagnus umbellata have been investigated for their antibacterial, anti-fungal, insecticidal and phytotoxic activities. The petroleum ether extracts of the plant showed significant activity against E. faecalis. The activity of dichloromethane extract was also determined significant against S. aureus. The chloroform extract indicated low activity against E. coli, K. pneumoniae, B. subtilis and S. flexenari. The ethyl acetate fraction demonstrated significant activity against K. pneumoniae while methanolic extract exhibited significant activity against E. coli. All extracts showed low phytotoxic activity. The dichloromethane extract exhibited moderate insecticidal activity while other extract indicated low activity.
