RESUMEN

Transmission measurements of the soft X-ray beamline to the Small Quantum Systems (SQS) scientific instrument at the SASE3 undulator of European XFEL are presented. Measurements are reported for a wide range of photon energies (650 eV to 2400 eV), using X-ray gas monitors as well as a bolometric radiometer. The results are in good agreement with simulations for the beam transport and show a transmission of up to 80% over the whole photon energy range. The contribution of second- and third-harmonic radiation of the soft X-ray undulator is determined at selected photon energies by performing transmission measurements using a gas absorber to provide variable attenuation of the incoming photon flux. A comparison of the results with semi-analytic calculations for the generation of free-electron laser pulses in the SASE3 undulator reveals an influence of apertures along the beam transport on the exact harmonic content to be accounted for at the experiment. The second-harmonic content is measured to be in the range of 0.1% to 0.3%, while the third-harmonic contributed a few percent to the SASE3 emission. For experiments at the SQS instrument, these numbers can be reduced through specific selections of the mirror reflection angles.

RESUMEN

The Small Quantum Systems instrument is one of the six operating instruments of the European XFEL, dedicated to the atomic, molecular and cluster physics communities. The instrument started its user operation at the end of 2018 after a commissioning phase. The design and characterization of the beam transport system are described here. The X-ray optical components of the beamline are detailed, and the beamline performances, transmission and focusing capabilities are reported. It is shown that the X-ray beam can be effectively focused as predicted by ray-tracing simulations. The impact of non-ideal X-ray source conditions on the focusing performances is discussed.

RESUMEN

Superfluid helium nanodroplets are an ideal environment for the formation of metastable, self-organized dopant nanostructures. However, the presence of vortices often hinders their formation. Here, we demonstrate the generation of vortex-free helium nanodroplets and explore the size range in which they can be produced. From x-ray diffraction images of xenon-doped droplets, we identify that single compact structures, assigned to vortex-free aggregation, prevail up to 10^{8} atoms per droplet. This finding builds the basis for exploring the assembly of far-from-equilibrium nanostructures at low temperatures.

RESUMEN

Excited double-core-hole states of isolated water molecules resulting from the sequential absorption of two x-ray photons have been investigated. These states are formed through an alternative pathway, where the initial step of core ionization is accompanied by the shake-up of a valence electron, leading to the same final states as in the core-ionization followed by core-excitation pathway. The capability of the x-ray free-electron laser to deliver very intense, very short, and tunable light pulses is fully exploited to identify the two different pathways.

Walking is a complex task. To prevent falls and injuries, gait needs to constantly adjust to the environment. This requires information from various sensory systems; in turn, moving through the environment continuously changes available sensory information. Visual information is available from a distance, and therefore most critical when negotiating difficult terrain. To effectively sample visual information, humans adjust their gaze to the terrain or-in laboratory settings-when facing motor perturbations. During activities of daily living, however, only a fraction of sensory and cognitive resources can be devoted to ensuring safe gait. How do humans deal with challenging walking conditions when they face high cognitive load? Young, healthy participants (N = 24) walked on a treadmill through a virtual, but naturalistic environment. Occasionally, their gait was experimentally perturbed, inducing slipping. We varied cognitive load by asking participants in some blocks to count backward in steps of seven; orthogonally, we varied whether visual cues indicated upcoming perturbations. We replicated earlier findings on how humans adjust their gaze and their gait rapidly and flexibly on various time scales: eye and head movements responded in a partially compensatory pattern and visual cues mostly affected eye movements. Interestingly, the cognitive task affected mainly head orientation. During the cognitive task, we found no clear signs of a less stable gait or of a cautious gait mode, but evidence that participants adapted their gait less to the perturbations than without secondary task. In sum, cognitive load affects head orientation and impairs the ability to adjust to gait perturbations.

Thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) emitters have become the leading emissive materials for highly efficient organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The deposition of these materials in scalable and cost-effective ways is paramount when looking toward the future of OLED applications. Herein, a simple OLED with fully solution-processed organic layers is introduced, where the TADF emissive layer is ink-jet printed. The TADF polymer has electron and hole conductive side chains, simplifying the fabrication process by removing the need for additional host materials. The OLED has a peak emission of 502 nm and a maximum luminance of close to 9600 cd m-2 . The self-hosted TADF polymer is also demonstrated in a flexible OLED, reaching a maximum luminance of over 2000 cd m-2 . These results demonstrate the potential applications of this self-hosted TADF polymer in flexible ink-jet printed OLEDs and, therefore, for a more scalable fabrication process.

A set of electron time-of-flight spectrometers for high-resolution angle-resolved spectroscopy was developed for the Small Quantum Systems (SQS) instrument at the SASE3 soft X-ray branch of the European XFEL. The resolving power of this spectrometer design is demonstrated to exceed 10 000 (E/ΔE), using the well known Ne 1s-13p resonant Auger spectrum measured at a photon energy of 867.11 eV at a third-generation synchrotron radiation source. At the European XFEL, a width of ∼0.5 eV full width at half-maximum for a kinetic energy of 800 eV was demonstrated. It is expected that this linewidth can be reached over a broad range of kinetic energies. An array of these spectrometers, with different angular orientations, is tailored for the Atomic-like Quantum Systems endstation for high-resolution angle-resolved spectroscopy of gaseous samples.

PURPOSE: Sonographic diagnosis of developmental dysplasia of the hip allows treatment with a flexion-abduction orthosis preventing hip luxation. Accurate determination of alpha and beta angles according to Graf is crucial for correct diagnosis. It is unclear if algorithms could predict the angles. We aimed to compare the accuracy for users and automation reporting root mean squared errors (RMSE). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used 303 306 ultrasound images of newborn hips collected between 2009 and 2016 in screening consultations. Trained physicians labelled every second image with alpha and beta angles during the consultations. A random subset of images was labeled with time and precision under lab conditions as ground truth. Automation predicted the two angles using a convolutional neural network (CNN). The analysis was focused on the alpha angle. RESULTS: Three methods were implemented, each with a different abstraction of the problem: (1) CNNs that directly learn the angles without any post-processing steps; (2) CNNs that return the relevant landmarks in the image to identify the angles; (3) CNNs that return the base line, bony roof line, and the cartilage roof line which are necessary to calculate the angles. The RMSE between physicians and ground truth were found to be 7.1° for alpha. The best CNN architecture was (2) landmark detection. The RMSE between landmark detection and ground truth was 3.9° for alpha. CONCLUSION: The accuracy of physicians in their daily routine is inferior to deep learning-based algorithms for determining angles in ultrasound of the newborn hip. Similar methods could be used to support physicians.

This contribution presents the initial characterization of the pump-probe performance at the Small Quantum Systems (SQS) instrument of the European X-ray Free Electron Laser. It is demonstrated that time-resolved experiments can be performed by measuring the X-ray/optical cross-correlation exploiting the laser-assisted Auger decay in neon. Applying time-of-arrival corrections based on simultaneous spectral encoding measurements allow us to significantly improve the temporal resolution of this experiment. These results pave the way for ultrafast pump-probe investigations of gaseous media at the SQS instrument combining intense and tunable soft X-rays with versatile optical laser capabilities.

BACKGROUND: Mongolian traditional swaddling of infants, where arms and legs are extended with a tight wrapping and hips are in adduction position, may lead to abnormal maturation and formation of the hip joint; and is a contributing factor for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). This hypothesis was tested in this randomized controlled trial. METHODS: Eighty newborns with one or two hips at risk of worsening to DDH (Graf Type 2a; physiologically immature hips) at birth were randomized into 2 groups at a tertiary hospital in Ulaanbaatar. The "swaddling" group (n = 40) was swaddled in the common traditional Mongolian method for a month while the "non-swaddling" group (n = 40) was instructed not to swaddle at all. All enrollees were followed up on monthly basis by hip ultrasound and treated with an abduction-flexion splint if necessary. The groups were compared on the rate of Graf's "non-Type 1" hips at follow-up controls as the primary outcome. Secondary outcomes were rate of DDH and time to discharge (Graf Type 1; healthy hips). In addition, correlation between the primary outcome and swaddling length in days and frequency of swaddling in hours per day were calculated. RESULTS: Recruitment continued from September 2019 to March 2020 and follow-up data were completed in June 2020. We collected final outcome data in all 80 enrollees. Percentages of cases with non-Type 1 hip at any follow-up examination were 7.5% (3/40) in the non-swaddling group and 40% (16/40) in the swaddling group (p = 0.001). There was no DDH case in the non-swaddling group while there were 8 cases of DDH in the swaddling group. The mean time to discharge was 5.1 ± 0.3 weeks in the non-swaddling group and 8.4 ± 0.89 weeks in the swaddling group (p = 0.001). There is a correlation between the primary outcome and the swaddling frequency in hours per day (r = 0.81) and swaddling length in days (r = 0.43). CONCLUSIONS: Mongolian traditional swaddling where legs are extended and hips are in extension and adduction position increases the risk for DDH. Most humans can walk effortlessly across uniform terrain even when they do not pay much attention to it. However, most natural terrain is far from uniform, and we need visual information to maintain stable gait. Recent advances in mobile eye-tracking technology have made it possible to study, in natural environments, how terrain affects gaze and thus the sampling of visual information. However, natural environments provide only limited experimental control, and some conditions cannot safely be tested. Typical laboratory setups, in contrast, are far from natural settings for walking. We used a setup consisting of a dual-belt treadmill, 240\(^\circ\) projection screen, floor projection, three-dimensional optical motion tracking, and mobile eye tracking to investigate eye, head, and body movements during perturbed and unperturbed walking in a controlled yet naturalistic environment. In two experiments (N = 22 each), we simulated terrain difficulty by repeatedly inducing slipping through accelerating either of the two belts rapidly and unpredictably (Experiment 1) or sometimes following visual cues (Experiment 2). We quantified the distinct roles of eye and head movements for adjusting gaze on different time scales. While motor perturbations mainly influenced head movements, eye movements were primarily affected by the presence of visual cues. This was true both immediately following slips and-to a lesser extent-over the course of entire 5-min blocks. We find adapted gaze parameters already after the first perturbation in each block, with little transfer between blocks. In conclusion, gaze-gait interactions in experimentally perturbed yet naturalistic walking are adaptive, flexible, and effector specific.

We report on a multiparticle coincidence experiment performed at the European X-ray Free-Electron Laser at the Small Quantum Systems instrument using a COLTRIMS reaction microscope. By measuring two ions and two electrons in coincidence, we investigate double core-hole generation in O_{2} molecules in the gas phase. Single-site and two-site double core holes have been identified and their molecular-frame electron angular distributions have been obtained for a breakup of the oxygen molecule into two doubly charged ions. The measured distributions are compared to results of calculations performed within the frozen- and relaxed-core Hartree-Fock approximations.

The European XFEL requires long and ultraflat X-ray mirrors of high precision for the beam offset and distribution system [Altarelli et al. (2006), XFEL Technical Design Report, DESY 2006-097. DESY, Hamburg, Germany]. A general specification of the beam transport mirrors is a length of up to 950 mm and an optical surface with a deviation from a perfectly flat surface of <30 nm peak-to-valley and a figure error of <2 nm peak-to-valley. From a production point of view, such a mirror cannot be easily fabricated so, in each beamline, it is foreseen to have at least one mirror with bending capabilities. In this way, it is possible to correct the residual divergence of the beam in order to focus it in the correct position with high accuracy and repeatability. This is practically implemented using a mechanical bender in which the mirror is mounted and bent through a motorized actuator. One such system was characterized in the metrology lab using a large-aperture Fizeau interferometer and a capacitive sensor. It was then installed in the beamline and calibrated again using the X-ray beam. Here, the procedure is described and the two different methods are compared, stressing the differences and the possible explanations and improvements.

Biofilm accumulation in porous media can cause pore plugging and change many of the physical properties of porous media. Engineering bioplugging may have significant applications for many industrial processes, while improved knowledge on biofilm accumulation in porous media at porescale in general has broad relevance for a range of industries as well as environmental and water research. The experimental results by means of microscopic imaging over a T-shape microchannel clearly show that increase in fluid velocity could facilitate biofilm growth, but that above a velocity threshold, biofilm detachment and inhibition of biofilm formation due to high shear stress were observed. High nutrient concentration prompts the biofilm growth; however, the generated biofilm displays a weak adhesive strength. This paper provides an overview of biofilm development in a hydrodynamic environment for better prediction and modelling of bioplugging processes associated with porous systems in petroleum industry, hydrogeology and water purification.

In September 2018, an international meeting of doctors of various disciplines, with expertise in the detection and treatment of DDH, was held in Csolyospalos, Hungary. The aim was to achieve consensus on the detection and early treatment of the condition and to develop a standardized system of teaching and training for hip ultrasound. There was strong agreement that US screening is essential. Specifically the Graf technique was selected as the technique of choice. Universal US screening was strongly favored. Screening should be carried out as soon as possible, but not later than the sixth week of age. US screening is cost-effective, does not result in overtreatment, and contributes to a reduction of long-term consequences. The essential principle of treatment is timely application of a device to achieve reduction, retention and maturation, by holding the hips in flexion, and a safe degree of abduction. It was agreed that the effectiveness of any screening policy depends on the correct scanning technique. Therefore, standardization of teaching and training of the Graf technique is mandatory. A unified teaching policy and materials should be developed for this purpose. Certification, re-certification and audit were discussed. The group, which has been formalized as the International Interdisciplinary Consensus Committee On DDH Evaluation (ICODE), will continue to meet and work towards establishing international consensus on DDH, standardizing and developing teaching and training of the Graf technique for hip US, and maintaining standards for detection and management.

On the 1 H NMR timescale, 2,2'-biindolyls with (R)-configured (1-alkoxyprop)-2-yl, (1-hydroxyprop)-2-yl, or (1-siloxyprop)-2-yl substituents at C-1 and C-1' are atropisomerically stable at <0 °C and interconvert at >30 °C. A 2,2'-biindolyl (R,R)-17 a of that kind and achiral (!) brominating reagents gave the atropisomerically stable 3,3'-dibromobiindolyls (M)- and/or (P)-18 a at best atropselectively-because of point-to-axial asymmetric inductions-and atropdivergently, exhibiting up to 95 % (M)- and as much (P)-atropselectivity. This route to atropisomerically pure biaryls is novel and should extend to other substrates and/or different functionalizations. The dibromobiindolyls (M)- and (P)-18 a furnished the biindolyldiphosphanes (M)- and (P)-14 without atropisomerization. These syntheses did not require the resolution of a racemic mixture, which distinguishes them from virtually all biaryldiphosphane syntheses known to date. (M)- and (P)-14 acted as ligands in catalytic asymmetric allylations and hydrogenations. Remarkably, the ß-ketoester rac-25 c was hydrogenated trans-selectively with 98 % ee; this included a dynamic kinetic resolution.

The development of iridium-free, yet efficient emitters with thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) was an important step towards mass production of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Progress is currently impeded by the low solubility and low chemical stability of the materials. Herein, we present a CuI -based TADF emitter that is sufficiently chemically stable under ambient conditions and can be processed by printing techniques. The solubility is drastically enhanced (to 100 g L-1 ) in relevant printing solvents. The integrity of the complex is preserved in solution, as was demonstrated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and other techniques. In addition, it was found that the optoelectronic properties are not affected even when partly processing under ambient conditions. As a highlight, we present a TADF-based OLED device that reached an efficiency of 11±2 % external quantum efficiency (EQE).

Easy come, easy go: the great structural diversity of Cu(I) complexes is an ambivalent trait. Apart from the well-known catalytic properties of Cu(I), a great number of potent luminescent complexes have been found in the last ten years featuring a plethora of structural motifs. The downside of this variety is the undesired formation of other species upon processing. In here, strategies to avoid this behavior are presented: Only one favorable structural unit often exists for multinuclear Cu(I) complexes with bridging ligands. In addition, these complexes exhibit favorable photophysical properties due to cooperative effects of the metal halide core. Furthermore, we demonstrate the broad range of applications of emitting Cu(I) compounds.

Luminescent Cu(I) complexes are interesting candidates as dopants in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). However, open questions remain regarding the stability of such complexes in solution and therefore their suitability for solution processing. Since the emission behavior of Cu(I) emitters often drastically differs between bulk and thin film samples, it cannot be excluded that changes such as partial decomposition or formation of alternative emitting compounds upon processing are responsible. In this study, we present three particularly interesting candidates of the recently established copper-halide-(diphenylphosphino)pyridine derivatives (PyrPHOS) family that do not show such changes. We compare single crystals, amorphous bulk samples, and neat thin films in order to verify whether the material remains stable upon processing. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS (31)P NMR) was used to investigate the electronic environment of the phosphorus atoms, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Cu K edge provides insight into the local electronic and geometrical environment of the copper(I) metal centers of the samples. Our results suggest that--unlike other copper(I) complexes--the copper-halide-PyrPHOS clusters are significantly more stable upon processing and retain their initial structure upon quick precipitation as well as thin film processing.

BACKGROUND: We are obliged to give babies the chance to profit from a nationwide screening of developmental dysplasia of the hip in very rural areas of Mongolia, where trained physicians are scarce. This study aimed to compare the quality and interpretation of hip ultrasound screening examinations performed by nurses and junior physicians. METHODS: A group of 6 nurses and 6 junior physician volunteers with no previous ultrasound experience underwent Graf's standard training in hands-on practice. Newborns were examined before discharge from the hospital, according to the national guideline. Two standard documentation images of each hip were saved digitally. The groups were compared on the proportion of good quality of sonograms and correct interpretation. Two Swiss supervisors' agreed diagnosis according to Graf was considered the final reference for the study purposes. RESULTS: A total of 201 newborns (402 hips or 804 sonograms) were examined in the study, with a mean age of 1.3±0.8 days at examination. Junior physicians examined 100 newborns (200 hips or 400 sonograms), while nurses examined 101 newborns (202 hips or 404 sonograms). The study subjects of the two groups were well balanced for the distribution of baseline characteristics. The study observed no statistically significant difference in the quality of Graf's standard plane images between the providers. Eventually, 92.0% (92) of the physician group and 89.1% (90) of the nurse group were correctly diagnosed as "Group A" (Graf's Type 1 hip) or "Non-Group A" hips (p = 0.484). The most common errors among the groups were a missing lower limb, wrong measurement lines, and technical problems. CONCLUSION: Our study provides evidence that while there might be a trend of slightly more technical mistakes in the nurse group, the overall diagnosis accuracy is similar to junior physicians after receiving standard training in Graf's hip ultrasound method. However, after basic training, regular quality control is a must and all participants should receive refresher trainings. More specifically, nurses need training in the identification of anatomical structures.
