BACKGROUND: The accuracy of estimation of kidney function with the use of routine metabolic tests, such as measurement of the serum creatinine level, has been controversial. The European Kidney Function Consortium (EKFC) developed a creatinine-based equation (EKFC eGFRcr) to estimate the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) with a rescaled serum creatinine level (i.e., the serum creatinine level is divided by the median serum creatinine level among healthy persons to control for variation related to differences in age, sex, or race). Whether a cystatin C-based EKFC equation would increase the accuracy of estimated GFR is unknown. METHODS: We used data from patients in Sweden to estimate the rescaling factor for the cystatin C level in adults. We then replaced rescaled serum creatinine in the EKFC eGFRcr equation with rescaled cystatin C, and we validated the resulting EKFC eGFRcys equation in cohorts of White patients and Black patients in Europe, the United States, and Africa, according to measured GFR, levels of serum creatinine and cystatin C, age, and sex. RESULTS: On the basis of data from 227,643 patients in Sweden, the rescaling factor for cystatin C was estimated at 0.83 for men and women younger than 50 years of age and 0.83 + 0.005 × (age - 50) for those 50 years of age or older. The EKFC eGFRcys equation was unbiased, had accuracy that was similar to that of the EKFC eGFRcr equation in both White patients and Black patients (11,231 patients from Europe, 1093 from the United States, and 508 from Africa), and was more accurate than the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration eGFRcys equation recommended by Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes. The arithmetic mean of EKFC eGFRcr and EKFC eGFRcys further improved the accuracy of estimated GFR over estimates from either biomarker equation alone. CONCLUSIONS: The EKFC eGFRcys equation had the same mathematical form as the EKFC eGFRcr equation, but it had a scaling factor for cystatin C that did not differ according to race or sex. In cohorts from Europe, the United States, and Africa, this equation improved the accuracy of GFR assessment over that of commonly used equations. (Funded by the Swedish Research Council.).

More than a decade after the discovery of MXene, there has been a remarkable increase in research on synthesis, characterization, and applications of this growing family of two-dimensional (2D) carbides and nitrides. Today, these materials include one, two, or more transition metals arranged in chemically ordered or disordered structures of three, five, seven, or nine atomic layers, with a surface chemistry characterized by surface terminations. By combining M, X, and various surface terminations, it appears that a virtually endless number of MXenes is possible. However, for the design and discovery of structures and compositions beyond current MXenes, one needs suitable (stable) precursors, an assessment of viable pathways for 3D to 2D conversion, and utilization or development of corresponding synthesis techniques. Here, we present a critical and forward-looking review of the field of atomic scale design and synthesis of MXenes and their parent materials. We discuss theoretical methods for predicting MXene precursors and for assessing whether they are chemically exfoliable. We also summarize current experimental methods for realizing the predicted materials, listing all verified MXenes to date, and outline research directions that will improve the fundamental understanding of MXene processing, enabling atomic scale design of future 2D materials, for emerging technologies.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: While the rationale for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination is to reduce complications and overall mortality, some cardiovascular complications from the vaccine itself have been demonstrated. Myocarditis and pericarditis are recognized as rare acute adverse events after mRNA vaccines in young males, while evidence regarding other cardiovascular events remains limited and inconsistent. This study assessed the risks of several cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events in a Swedish nationwide register-based cohort. METHODS: Post-vaccination risk of myocarditis/pericarditis, dysrhythmias, heart failure, myocardial infarction, and cerebrovascular events (transient ischaemic attack and stroke) in several risk windows after each vaccine dose were assessed among all Swedish adults (n = 8 070 674). Hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) compared with unvaccinated were estimated from Cox regression models adjusted for potential confounders. RESULTS: For most studied outcomes, decreased risks of cardiovascular events post-vaccination were observed, especially after dose three (HRs for dose three ranging from .69 to .81), while replicating the increased risk of myocarditis and pericarditis 1-2 weeks after COVID-19 mRNA vaccination. Slightly increased risks, similar across vaccines, were observed for extrasystoles [HR 1.17 (95% CI 1.06-1.28) for dose one and HR 1.22 (95% CI 1.10-1.36) for dose two, stronger in elderly and males] but not for arrhythmias and for transient ischaemic attack [HR 1.13 (95% CI 1.05-1.23), mainly in elderly] but not for stroke. CONCLUSIONS: Risk of myopericarditis (mRNA vaccines only), extrasystoles, and transient ischaemic attack was transiently increased after COVID-19 vaccination, but full vaccination substantially reduced the risk of several more severe COVID-19-associated cardiovascular outcomes, underscoring the protective benefits of complete vaccination.

Estimating glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is important in daily practice to assess kidney function and adapting the best clinical care of patients with and without chronic kidney disease. The new creatinine-based European Kidney Function Consortium (EKFC) equation is used to estimate GFR. This equation was developed and validated mainly in European individuals and based on a rescaled creatinine, with the rescaling factor (Q-value) defined as the median normal value of serum creatinine in a given population. The validation was limited in Non-Black Americans and absent in Black Americans. Here, our cross-sectional analysis included 12,854 participants from nine studies encompassing large numbers of both non-Black and Black Americans with measured GFR by clearance of an exogenous marker (reference method), serum creatinine, age, sex, and self-reported race available. Two strategies were considered with population-specific Q-values in Black and non-Black men and women (EKFCPS) or a race-free Q-value (EKFCRF). In the whole population, only the EKFCPS equation showed no statistical median bias (0.14, 95% confidence interval [-0.07; 0.35] mL/min/1.73m2), and the bias for the EKFCRF (0.74, [0.51; 0.94] mL/min/1.73m2) was closer to zero than that for the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI2021) equation (1.22, [0.99; 1.47]) mL/min/1.73m2]. The percentage of estimated GFR within 30% of measured GFR was similar for CKD-EPI2021 (79.2% [78.5%; 79.9%]) and EKFCRF (80.1% [79.4%; 80.7%]), but improved for the EKFCPS equation (81.1% [80.5%; 81.8%]). Thus, our EKFC equations can be used to estimate GFR in the United States incorporating either self-reported race or unknown race at the patient's discretion per hospital registration records.

Outcome under-ascertainment, characterized by the incomplete identification or reporting of cases, poses a substantial challenge in epidemiologic research. While capture-recapture methods can estimate unknown case numbers, their role in estimating exposure effects in observational studies is not well established. This paper presents an ascertainment probability weighting framework that integrates capture-recapture and propensity score weighting. We propose a nonparametric estimator of effects on binary outcomes that combines exposure propensity scores with data from two conditionally independent outcome measurements to simultaneously adjust for confounding and under-ascertainment. Demonstrating its practical application, we apply the method to estimate the relationship between health care work and coronavirus disease 2019 testing in a Swedish region. We find that ascertainment probability weighting greatly influences the estimated association compared to conventional inverse probability weighting, underscoring the importance of accounting for under-ascertainment in studies with limited outcome data coverage. We conclude with practical guidelines for the method's implementation, discussing its strengths, limitations, and suitable scenarios for application.

The on-surface synthesis of low-dimensional organic nanostructures has been extensively investigated through both experimental and theoretical methods, particularly by density functional theory (DFT). However, the complex mixture of interactions often poses challenges within the DFT framework, and there is a knowledge-gap regarding how the choice of DFT approach affects the computed results. Here, five different approaches including vdW interactions, i.e., PBE+D3, PBE+vdWsurf, rev-vdW-DF2, r2SCAN+rVV10 and BEEF-vdW, are employed to describe three prototypical on-surface reactions; dehydrogenation of benzene, debromination of bromobenzene, and deiodination of iodobenzene on the (111) facets of the coinage metals. Overall, rev-vdW-DF2 outperforms the other methods in describing benzene adsorption, whereas BEEF-vdW falls short. For dehydrogenation and debromination on Cu(111), all functionals except BEEF-vdW give reasonable activation energies compared to experiments. A similar trend is observed for Ag(111) and Au(111), with BEEF-vdW yielding significantly higher activation and reaction energies. For dehalogenation, all the five vdW approaches correctly capture the reactivity trend - Cu(111) > Ag(111) > Au(111) - and the expected hierarchy between bromobenzene desorption and carbon- bromine activation. Only BEEF-vdW fails to predict the faster kinetics of deiodination than the iodobenzene desorption. Our work forms a basis for evaluating density functionals in describing chemical reactions on surfaces.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: The estimation of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is one main tool to detect renal disease. The most used biomarker remains serum creatinine and the European Kidney Function Consortium (EKFCcrea) equation is the most validated in Europe. More recently, cystatin C, has been proposed. We studied the performances of the EKFC equations in a large cohort of subjects according to their diabetic status. METHODS: Four cohorts from the EKFC dataset were retrospectively considered in which the diabetic status was available. GFR was measured by plasma clearances (mGFR) (iohexol or 51Cr-EDTA). The performance of the equations was assessed by calculating bias, precision (IQR) and P30 (percentage of eGFR-values within ± 30% of mGFR). RESULTS: In the whole population (n = 6 158), median [IQR] age was 61 [47;72] years, with 45.8% women. Mean mGFR was 60 [39;82] mL/min/1.73m². Compared to non-diabetic individuals (n = 5 124), diabetic patients (n = 1 034) were older, more frequently male, heavier, and had lower mGFR. The performance of the EKFCcys equation was similar to EKFCcrea, but the EKFCcrea+cys had better P30 than the single-biomarker equations. P30 values were substantially lower in diabetic patients than in non-diabetic but, according to a matched analysis, this is mainly explained by the difference in GFR levels between the two populations, not by diabetic status. CONCLUSION: We showed that equation combining creatinine and cystatin C present a better performance. If accuracy of equations seems better in non-diabetic than in diabetic individuals, it is more due to differences in GFR levels than to the diabetic status.

Sulfur-terminated single sheet (ss-)MXene was recently achieved by delamination of multilayered van der Waals bonded (vdW)-MXenes Nb2CS2 and Ta2CS2 synthesized through solid-state synthesis, rather than via the traditional way of selectively etching A-layers from the corresponding MAX phase. Inspired by this, we perform a computational screening study of vdW-MXenes M2CCh2 isotypical to Nb2CS2 and Ta2CS2, with M = Sc, Y, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Mo, or W and Ch = S, Se, or Te. The thermodynamic stability of each vdW-MXene M2CCh2 is assessed, and the dynamical stability of both vdW- and ss-MXene is considered through phonon dispersions. We predict seven stable vdW-MXenes, out of which four have not been reported previously, and one, V2CSe2, incorporates a new transition metal element into this family of materials. Electronic properties are presented for the vdW- and ss-forms of the stable vdW-MXenes, suggesting that the materials are either metallic, semimetallic, or semiconducting. In previous experimental reports the vdW-MXene Nb2CS2 is synthesized by manipulation of the corresponding M2AX phase Nb2SC. Therefore, we also evaluate the thermodynamic stability of the corresponding M2AX phases, identifying 15 potentially stable phases. Six of these are experimentally reported, leaving nine new M2AX phases for future experimental investigation.

OBJECTIVES: To make glomerular filtration rate (GFR) estimating equations applicable across populations with different creatinine generation by using rescaled serum creatinine (sCr/Q) where sCr represents the individual creatinine level and Q the average creatinine value in healthy persons of the same population. METHODS: GFR measurements (mGFR, plasma clearance of 51Cr-EDTA) were conducted in 964 adult Black Europeans. We established the re-expressed Lund-Malmö revised equation (r-LMR) by replacing serum creatinine (sCr) with rescaled creatinine sCr/Q. We evaluated the r-LMR equation based on Q-values of White Europeans (r-LMRQ-white; Q-values females: 62⯵mol/L, males: 80⯵mol/L) and Black Europeans (r-LMRQ-Black; Q-values females: 65⯵mol/L, males: 90⯵mol/L), and the European Kidney Function Consortium equation (EKFCQ-White and EKFCQ-Black) regarding bias, precision (interquartile range, IQR) and accuracy (percentage of estimates within ±10â¯% [P10] and ±30â¯% [P30] of mGFR). RESULTS: Median bias of r-LMRQ-White/r-LMRQ-Black/EKFCQ-White/EKFCQ-Black were -9.1/-4.5/-6.3/-0.9â¯mL/min/1.73â¯m2, IQR 14.7/14.5/14.5/15.6â¯mL/min/1.73â¯m2, P10 25.1â¯%/34.8â¯%/30.3â¯%/37.2â¯% and P30 74.2â¯%/84.1â¯%/80.6â¯%/83.6â¯%. The improvement of bias and accuracy when using proper Q-values was most pronounced in men. Similar improvements were obtained above and below mGFR 60â¯mL/min/1.73â¯m2 and at various age and BMI intervals, except for BMI<20â¯kg/m2 where bias increased, and accuracy decreased. CONCLUSIONS: GFR estimating equations may be re-expressed to include rescaled creatinine (sCr/Q) and used across populations with different creatinine generation if population-specific average creatinine concentrations (Q-values) for healthy persons are established.

While there is substantial evidence on excess mortality in the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, no study has conducted a cause-specific analysis of excess mortality for the whole period 2020-2022 across multiple countries. We examined cause-specific excess mortality during 2020-2022 in Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden-four countries with similar demographics and welfare provisions, which implemented different pandemic response policies. To this end, we utilized nationwide register-based information on annual cause-specific deaths stratified by age and sex, and applied linear regression models to predict mortality in 2020-2022 based on the reference period 2010-2019. Excess deaths were obtained by contrasting actual and expected deaths. Additional analyses employed standardization to a common population, as well as population adjustments to account for previous deaths. Our results showed that, besides deaths due to COVID-19 (a total of 32,491 during 2020-2022), all countries experienced excess deaths due to cardiovascular diseases (in total 11,610 excess deaths), and under-mortality due to respiratory diseases other than COVID-19 (in total 9878) and dementia (in total 8721). The excess mortality due to cardiovascular diseases was particularly pronounced in Finland and Norway in 2022, and the under-mortality due to dementia was particularly pronounced in Sweden in 2021-2022. In conclusion, while COVID-19 deaths emerge as the most apparent consequence of the pandemic, our findings suggest that mortality has also been influenced by substitutions between different causes of death and over time, as well as indirect consequences of COVID-19 infection and pandemic responses-albeit to different extents in the different countries.

BACKGROUND: A new cystatin C based European Kidney Function Consortium (EKFCCysC) equation was recently developed for adults, using the same mathematical form as the previously published full age spectrum creatinine based EKFC-equation (EKFCCrea). In the present study the cystatin C based EKFC-equation is extended to children, by defining the appropriate cystatin C rescaling factor QCysC. METHODS: Rescaling factor QCysC for cystatin C was defined as: a) 0.83 mg/L, exactly as it was defined for young adults in the adult equation, and b) a more complex QCysC-age relationship based on 4th degree cystatin C-age polynomials after evaluation of data from Uppsala, Stockholm and Canada and aggregated data from Germany. The EKFCCysC equation was then validated in an independent dataset in European children (n = 2,293) with measured GFR, creatinine, cystatin C, age, height and sex available. RESULTS: The EKFCCysC with the simple QCysC-value of 0.83 had a bias of -7.6 [95%CI -8.4;-6.5] mL/min/1.73 m2 and a P30-value of 85.8% [95%CI 84.4;87.3] equal to the EKFCCysC with the more complex 4th degree QCysC-value. The arithmetic mean of the EKFCCrea and EKFCCysC with the simple QCysC of 0.83 had a bias of -4.0 [95%CI -4.5;-3.1] mL/min/1.73 m2 and P30 of 90.4% [95%CI 89.2;91.6] similar to using the more complex 4th degree QCysC-polynomial. CONCLUSION: Using exactly the same QCysC of 0.83 mg/L, the adult EKFCCysC can easily be extended to children, with some bias but acceptable P30-values. The arithmetic mean of EKFCCrea and EKFCCysC results in bias closer to zero and P30 slightly over 90%.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) has previously been associated with several comorbidities that may have shared genetic, epigenetic, developmental or environmental origins. PCOS may be influenced by prenatal androgen excess, poor intrauterine or childhood environmental factors, childhood obesity and learned health risk behaviors. We analyzed the association between PCOS and several relevant comorbidities while adjusting for early-life biological and socioeconomic conditions, also investigating the extent to which the association is affected by familial risk factors. METHODS: This total-population register-based cohort study included 333,999 full sisters, born between 1962 and 1980. PCOS and comorbidity diagnoses were measured at age 17-45 years through national hospital register data from 1997 to 2011, and complemented with information on the study subjects´ early-life and social characteristics. In the main analysis, sister fixed effects (FE) models were used to control for all time-invariant factors that are shared among sisters, thereby testing whether the association between PCOS and examined comorbidities is influenced by unobserved familial environmental, social or genetic factors. RESULTS: Three thousand five hundred seventy women in the Sister sample were diagnosed with PCOS, of whom 14% had obesity, 8% had depression, 7% had anxiety and 4% experienced sleeping, sexual and eating disorders (SSE). Having PCOS increased the odds of obesity nearly 6-fold (adjusted OR (aOR): 5.9 [95% CI:5.4-6.5]). This association was attenuated in models accounting for unobserved characteristics shared between full sisters, but remained considerable in size (Sister FE: aOR: 4.5 [95% CI: 3.6-5.6]). For depression (Sister FE: aOR: 1.4 [95% CI: 1.2-1.8]) and anxiety (Sister FE: aOR: 1.5 [95% CI: 1.2-1.8), there was a small decrease in the aORs when controlling for factors shared between sisters. Being diagnosed with SSE disorders yielded a 2.4 aOR (95% CI:2.0-2.6) when controlling for a comprehensive set of individual-level confounders, which only decreased slightly when controlling for factors at the family level such as shared genes or parenting style. Accounting for differences between sisters in observed early-life circumstances influenced the estimated associations marginally. CONCLUSION: Having been diagnosed with PCOS is associated with a markedly increased risk of obesity and sleeping, sexual and eating disorders, also after accounting for factors shared between sisters and early-life conditions.

During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, Sweden emphasized voluntary guidelines over mandates. We exploited a rapid change and reversal of the Public Health Agency of Sweden's COVID-19 testing guidelines for vaccinated and recently infected individuals as a quasi-experiment to examine sociodemographic differences in the response to changes in pandemic guidelines. We analyzed daily polymerase chain reaction tests from 1 October 2021 to 15 December 2021, for vaccinated or recently infected adults (≥20 years; n = 1 596 321) from three Swedish regions (Stockholm, Örebro, and Dalarna). Using interrupted time series analysis, we estimated abrupt changes in testing rates at the two dates when the guidelines were changed (1 November and 22 November). Stratified analysis and meta-regression were employed to explore sociodemographic differences in the strength of the response to the guideline changes. Testing rates declined substantially when guideline against testing of vaccinated and recently infected individuals came into effect on 1 November [testing rate ratio: 0.50 (95% confidence interval, CI 0.41, 0.61)], and increased again from these lowered levels by a similar amount upon its reversal on 22 November [testing rate ratio: 2.19 (95% CI: 1.69, 2.85)]. Being Sweden-born, having higher household income, or higher education, were all associated with a stronger adherent response to the guideline changes. Adjusting for stratum-specific baseline testing rates and test-positivity did not influence the results. Our findings suggest that the population was responsive to the rapid changes in testing guidelines, but with clear sociodemographic differences in the strength of the response.

BACKGROUND: The Nordic countries represent a unique case study for the COVID-19 pandemic due to socioeconomic and cultural similarities, high-quality comparable administrative register data and notable differences in mitigation policies during the pandemic. We aimed to compare weekly excess mortality in the Nordic countries across the three full pandemic years 2020-2022. METHODS: Using data on weekly all-cause mortality from official administrative registers in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden, we employed time series regression models to assess mortality developments within each pandemic year, with the period 2010-2019 used as reference period. We then compared excess mortality across the countries in 2020-2022, taking differences in population size and age- and sex-distribution into account. Results were age- and sex-standardized to the Danish population of 2020. Robustness was examined with a variety of sensitivity analyses. RESULTS: While Sweden experienced excess mortality in 2020 [75 excess deaths per 100 000 population (95% prediction interval 29-122)], Denmark, Finland and Norway experienced excess mortality in 2022 [52 (14-90), 130 (83-177) and 88 (48-128), respectively]. Weekly death data reveal how mortality started to increase in mid-2021 in Denmark, Finland and Norway, and continued above the expected level through 2022. CONCLUSION: Although the Nordic countries experienced relatively low pandemic excess mortality, the impact and timing of excess mortality differed substantially. These estimates-arguably the most accurate available for any region in capturing pandemic-related excess deaths-may inform future research and policy regarding the complex mortality dynamics in times of a health crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Diagnostic testing is essential for disease surveillance and test-trace-isolate efforts. We aimed to investigate if residential area sociodemographic characteristics and test accessibility were associated with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) testing rates. METHODS: We included 426 224 patient-initiated COVID-19 polymerase chain reaction tests from Uppsala County in Sweden from 24 June 2020 to 9 February 2022. Using Poisson regression analyses, we investigated if postal code area Care Need Index (CNI; median 1.0, IQR 0.8-1.4), a composite measure of sociodemographic factors used in Sweden to allocate primary healthcare resources, was associated with COVID-19 daily testing rates after adjustments for community transmission. We assessed if the distance to testing station influenced testing, and performed a difference-in-difference-analysis of a new testing station targeting a disadvantaged neighbourhood. RESULTS: We observed that CNI, i.e. primary healthcare need, was negatively associated with COVID-19 testing rates in inhabitants 5-69 years. More pronounced differences were noted across younger age groups and in Uppsala City, with test rate ratios in children (5-14 years) ranging from 0.56 (95% CI 0.47-0.67) to 0.87 (95% CI 0.80-0.93) across three pandemic waves. Longer distance to the nearest testing station was linked to lower testing rates, e.g. every additional 10 km was associated with a 10-18% decrease in inhabitants 15-29 years in Uppsala County. The opening of the targeted testing station was associated with increased testing, including twice as high testing rates in individuals aged 70-105, supporting an intervention effect. CONCLUSIONS: Ensuring accessible testing across all residential areas constitutes a promising tool to decrease inequalities in testing.

BACKGROUND: Contact allergy rates of linalool and limonene hydroperoxides (HPs) have increased. OBJECTIVES: To demonstrate the patterns of simultaneous positive patch test (PT) reactions and prevalences of multiple contact allergies (MCAs) in patients with contact allergy to linalool and/or limonene HPs. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of consecutive dermatitis patients in 2015-2020 was performed. RESULTS: Of all 4192 patients, 1851 had at least one positive PT reaction. Of these, 410 (22.2%) had MCAs, significantly related to a higher age (p-value = 0.003). Patients with an exclusively positive reaction to linalool HPs but not limonene HPs were shown to have MCAs (p-value <0.001, odds ratio (95% confidence interval) = 4.15 (3.01-5.73)). Patients with simultaneous contact allergies to both linalool and limonene HPs had contact allergies to many other screening and fragrance allergens. CONCLUSIONS: Simultaneous positive PT reactions to allergens in baseline series and fragrances are common in patients with the HPs contact allergy, especially linalool HPs. The pattern of simultaneous PT reactions principally suggested the co-sensitization of the cosmetic allergens.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Active aging is the process through which people strive to maintain wellbeing when growing old. Addressing the lack of research on active aging in the context of housing, the aim was to describe active aging among people aged 55 and older considering relocation and investigate whether perceived housing moderates the relationship between functional limitations and active aging. METHODS: We utilized cross-sectional data from a sub-sample (N = 820; mean age = 69.7; 54% women) of the Prospective RELOC-AGE. Functional limitations were reported using 10 dichotomous questions. Active aging was assessed with the University of Jyvaskyla Active Aging Scale (UJACAS; 17 items, self-rated for four perspectives). Perceived housing was self-rated with four usability questions and meaning of home (MOH; 28 items). Cross-sectional associations and interactions were analysed using linear regression models, adjusting for gender and educational level. RESULTS: Each functional limitation decreased the active aging score by almost five points (p < 0.001). Usability did not moderate that relationship while MOH significantly attenuated the association between functional limitations and active aging (p = 0.039). Those with high MOH had two points less decrease in active aging score compared to those with low MOH. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Having a home with more personal meaning attached to it seems to provide more ability and opportunity for meaningful activities, thus supporting active aging despite functional limitations. This sheds new light on the known association between MOH and different aspects of wellbeing in old age and has relevance for theory development, housing policies and housing counselling targeting younger older adults.

At the emergency department (ED), it is important to quickly and accurately determine which patients are likely to have a major adverse cardiac event (MACE). Machine learning (ML) models can be used to aid physicians in detecting MACE, and improving the performance of such models is an active area of research. In this study, we sought to determine if ML models can be improved by including a prior electrocardiogram (ECG) from each patient. To that end, we trained several models to predict MACE within 30 days, both with and without prior ECGs, using data collected from 19,499 consecutive patients with chest pain, from five EDs in southern Sweden, between the years 2017 and 2018. Our results indicate no improvement in AUC from prior ECGs. This was consistent across models, both with and without additional clinical input variables, for different patient subgroups, and for different subsets of the outcome. While contradicting current best practices for manual ECG analysis, the results are positive in the sense that ML models with fewer inputs are more easily and widely applicable in practice.

The design of novel low-dimensional carbon materials is at the forefront of modern chemistry. Recently, on-surface covalent synthesis has emerged as a powerful strategy to synthesize previously precluded compounds and polymers. Here, we report a scanning probe microscopy study, complemented by theoretical calculations, on the sequential skeletal rearrangement of sumanene-based precursors into a coronene-based organometallic network by stepwise intra- and inter-molecular reactions on Au(111). Interestingly, upon higher annealing, the formed organometallic networks evolve into two-dimensional coronene-based covalently linked patches through intermolecular homocoupling reactions. A new reaction mechanism is proposed based on the role of C-Au-C motifs to promote two stepwise carbon-carbon couplings to form cyclobutadiene bridges. Our results pave avenues for the conversion of molecular precursors on surfaces, affording the design of unexplored two-dimensional organometallic and covalent materials.

On-surface acetylenic homocoupling has been proposed to construct carbon nanostructures featuring sp hybridization. However, the efficiency of linear acetylenic coupling is far from satisfactory, often resulting in undesired enyne products or cyclotrimerization products due to the lack of strategies to enhance chemical selectivity. Herein, we inspect the acetylenic homocoupling reaction of polarized terminal alkynes (TAs) on Au(111) with bond-resolved scanning probe microscopy. The replacement of benzene with pyridine moieties significantly prohibits the cyclotrimerization pathway and facilitates the linear coupling to produce well-aligned N-doped graphdiyne nanowires. Combined with density functional theory calculations, we reveal that the pyridinic nitrogen modification substantially differentiates the coupling motifs at the initial C-C coupling stage (head-to-head vs head-to-tail), which is decisive for the preference of linear coupling over cyclotrimerization.
