RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the penetration of hydrogen peroxide (HP) into the pulp chamber and the color change of different bleaching varnishes in low concentrations used for at-home bleaching. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety healthy premolars were used, randomly distributed into nine groups (n = 10) according to bleaching varnish (PL, PolaLuminate; VS, VivaStyle Paint On Plus; CA, Cavex Bite&White whitening pen and; AW AlignerWhite) and time (10 and 30 min), and a control group (no bleaching). The penetration of HP was evaluated by UV-Vis spectroscopy. To evaluate the color change (ΔEab , ΔE00 , ΔWID ) a digital spectrophotometer was used (α = 0.05). RESULTS: The AW group in 10 min and the control group showed similar and lower HP penetration in the pulp chamber when compared to the other groups (p = 0.003). Increasing the application time to 30 minutes elevated the amount of HP inside the pulp chamber for all groups (p = 0.003), except for PL (p > 0.05). When applied for 30 min all bleaching varnishes showed higher color change (ΔWID ) when compared to 10 min (p = 0.04). CONCLUSIONS: For all bleaching varnishes evaluated, PolaLuminate applied for 30 min showed lower penetration into the pulp chamber and higher bleaching effects. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The use of bleaching varnishes seems promising for teeth bleaching, but it varies according to user product and protocol.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of the application of an additional hydrophobic bonding resin on the clinical performance of a universal adhesive applied in etch-and-rinse (ER) or self-etch adhesive (SE) strategy in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) after 5 years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Scotchbond Universal Adhesive (3M Oral Care) was applied in 134 NCCLs of 39 subjects using different adhesion approaches: 3-step ER (3-ER), 2-step ER (2-ER), 2-step SE (2-SE), and 1-step SE (1-SE). Enamel and dentin were acid etched prior to application of the universal adhesive for the 3-ER and 2-ER groups. An extra layer of a hydrophobic bonding resin was applied for groups 3-ER and 2-SE. All lesions were restored with Filtek Supreme XTE resin composite (3M Oral Care). Restorations were evaluated at baseline and at 5 years using the modified USPHS criteria. Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon tests were performed, and the survival rates (retention/fracture) were analyzed using Kaplan-Meier and log-rank tests (p < 0.05). RESULTS: The recall rate was 66.7% at 5 years. The cumulative survival rate was 96.9% for 3-ER, 96.8% for 2-ER, 71.4% for 2-SE, and 81.3% for 1-SE strategies. The log-rank test was statistically significant (p = 0.006). Retention rates were 100% for both ER groups, 75% for 2-SE and 81.3% for 1-SE. At 5 years, 2- and 1-SE approaches showed similar retention rates, but lower than those for 3- and 2-ER. A significant decrease in retention rate was detected for 2-SE (p = 0.007) and 1-SE (p = 0.014) groups between baseline and 5 years. All groups, except 2-ER, showed an increase in marginal discoloration. For this parameter, significant differences were detected between 2-ER and 1-SE (p = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS: The addition of a hydrophobic bonding resin to the recommended application sequence of Scotchbond Universal Adhesive did not improve its clinical performance in NCCLs after 5 years. Higher retention rates were measured when this adhesive was applied in ER mode. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This manuscript is a 5-year follow-up of a randomized clinical trial that started in 2012 when there was no strong recommendation for registration in clinicaltrials.gov. The results after 36 months of clinical service were previously published in this journal.

BACKGROUND: Students´ assessment should be carried out in an effective and objective manner, which reduces the possibility of different evaluators giving different scores, thus influencing the qualification obtained and the consistency of education. The aim of the present study was to determine the agreement among four evaluators and compare the overall scores awarded when assessing portfolios of endodontic preclinical treatments performed by dental students by using an analytic rubric and a numeric rating scale. METHODS: A random sample of 42 portfolios performed by fourth-year dental students at preclinical endodontic practices were blindly assessed by four evaluators using two different evaluation methods: an analytic rubric specifically designed and a numeric rating scale. Six categories were analyzed: radiographic assessment, access preparation, shaping procedure, obturation, content of the portfolio, and presentation of the portfolio. The maximum global score was 10 points. The overall scores obtained with both methods from each evaluator were compared by Student's t, while agreement among evaluators was measured by Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). The influence of the difficulty of the endodontic treatment on the evaluators´ scores was analyzed by one-way ANOVA. Statistical tests were performed at a pre-set alpha of 0.05 using Stata 16. RESULTS: Difficulty of canal treatment did not influence the scores of evaluators, irrespective of the evaluation method used. When the analytic rubric was used, inter-evaluator agreement was substantial for radiographic assessment, access preparation, shaping procedure, obturation, and overall scores. Inter-evaluator agreement ranged from moderate to fair with the numeric rating scale. Mean higher overall scores were achieved when numeric rating scale was used. Presentation and content of the portfolio showed slight and fair agreement, respectively, among evaluators, regardless the evaluation method applied. CONCLUSIONS: Assessment guided by an analytic rubric allowed evaluators to reach higher levels of agreement than those obtained when using a numeric rating scale. However, the rubric negatively affected overall scores.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis has a high prevalence and uncertain recurrence. Unlike the pro-inflammatory cytokine profile, little is known about the anti-inflammatory cytokine and antimicrobial peptide overview following treatment. The present study aimed to evaluate if any of the antimicrobial peptide LL-37, interleukin (IL) 4, 10 and 6 together with the volume of gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and total protein concentration in GCF could be used as correlative biomarkers for the severity in periodontitis as well as prognostic factors in the management of the disease. METHODS: Forty-five participants were recruited and allocated to the healthy (15), Stage I-II (15) or Stage III-IV periodontitis (15) group. Along with periodontal examination, GCF samples were obtained at baseline and 4-6 weeks following scaling and root planing (SRP) for the periodontitis groups. GCF samples were analyzed by ELISA kits to quantify LL-37 and IL-4, -6 and - 10. One-way ANOVA followed by Dunnett's test was used to determine differences among the three groups at baseline. Two-way ANOVA followed by Sidak's post-hoc test was used to compare between pre- and post-SRP in the two periodontitis groups. RESULTS: The amount of GCF volume was significantly correlated to the severity of periodontitis and decreased following SRP, particularly in the Stage III-IV group (p < 0.01). The levels of LL-37, IL-6, and pain and periodontal clinical parameters were significantly correlated to the severity of periodontitis. IL-4 and IL-10 in the periodontitis groups were significantly lower than the healthy group (p < 0.0001) and barely improved following SRP up to the level of the healthy group. CONCLUSIONS: With the limitations of this study, crevicular LL-37 may be a candidate for a biomarker of periodontitis and the associated pain upon probing. Dental caries is the major biofilm-mediated oral disease in the world. The main treatment to restore caries lesions consists of the use of adhesive resin composites due to their good properties. However, the progressive degradation of the adhesive in the medium term makes possible the proliferation of cariogenic bacteria allowing secondary caries to emerge. In this study, a dental adhesive incorporating a drug delivery system based on L-arginine-containing mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) was used to release this essential amino acid as a source of basicity to neutralize the harmful acidic conditions that mediate the development of dental secondary caries. The in vitro and bacterial culture experiments proved that L-arginine was released in a sustained way from MSNs and diffused out from the dental adhesive, effectively contributing to the reduction of the bacterial strains Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus casei. Furthermore, the mechanical and bonding properties of the dental adhesive did not change significantly after the incorporation of L-arginine-containing MSNs. These results are yielding glimmers of promise for the cost-effective prevention of secondary caries.

This study aimed at determining the plasma disposition kinetics of eprinomectin (EPM) and EPM excretion pattern through milk after topical administration to dairy cattle at the recommended dose of 0.5 mg/kg and at 1 and 1.5 mg/kg. A high variability in the plasma concentration profiles was observed among animals, particularly in the Cmax values, with a coefficient of variation between 39 and 53%. The Cmax and AUC values were significantly affected by the dose administered at 1.5 mg/kg. However, such differences did not seem to follow a linear pattern among treatments. These parameters did not differ among dose rates after dose normalization; nevertheless, the simulation of a linear kinetic disposition showed a mean plasma AUC value of 254 ng.d/ml instead of the observed value of 165 ng.d/ml. EPM concentration profiles in milk were significantly lower than those measured in plasma. The Cmax and AUC milk-to-plasma ratios ranged from 0.14 to 0.26 and 0.16 to 0.21, respectively (p>0.05). The low milk-to-plasma ratio of EPM accounted for a low percentage of the fraction of the administered dose excreted through milk, being significantly higher at a dose rate of 0.5 mg/kg (0.07%) of EPM than at 1.5 mg/kg (0.04%) (p<0.05). The topical administration of EPM to lactating dairy cows at higher doses than that recommended for gastrointestinal nematodes showed a milk excretion pattern with a zero milk withdrawal period. In conclusion, the administration of topical EPM formulation at 1 or 1.5 mg/kg may be a valuable tool to be used in regional strategic deworming programs aimed to control ectoparasite infections in dairy production systems.

INTRODUCTION: Cariology is today a broad-based discipline and in the Spanish university teaching field, all this knowledge is not unified in a curriculum. Therefore, the aim was to develop a consensus text based on the European Core Curriculum, updated, and adapted to the characteristics of the Spanish university environment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A Spanish Cariology Curriculum Group (SCCG) was set up with members of the Spanish Society of Epidemiology and Oral Public Health (SESPO), Spanish Society of Conservative and Aesthetic Dentistry (SEOC) and Spanish Society of Paediatric Dentistry (SEOP) and university experts to adapt the European Core Curriculum in Cariology for undergraduate dental students (ECCC) for Spain. The work was carried out online during 2018 and 2019, and also face-to-face meetings took place to obtain a draft curriculum open for discussion that was presented to all the Spanish universities. The final modifications to the document were specified in a Consensus Conference of Spanish universities offering a Degree in Dentistry that took place in Madrid on 19 November 2019. RESULTS: Thirty-eight university experts, under SCCG supervision, participated in the elaboration of the new framework document. A total of 16 universities, from 23 invited, reached a consensus as to the contents of the Spanish Curriculum in Cariology for undergraduate dental students. This new Curriculum emphasises learning outcomes, uses a consensus-based terminology pertaining to caries and other hard-tissue conditions, and introduces a new domain of competence in Domain III of ECCC. CONCLUSION: This new Cariology Curriculum is the result of a very broad-based consensus of university experts in Spain and lays the foundation for the implementation of an integrated teaching of Cariology in Spain in adherence to Alliance for a Caries Free Future (ACFF) objectives.

BACKGROUND: The efficacy of currently available anthelminthics against Trichuris trichiura infections is significatively lower than for other soil-transmitted helminths. The combination of ivermectin (IVM) and albendazole (ALB) has shown significant improvements in efficacy. METHODS: Safety and efficacy randomized controlled clinical trial comparing 3 experimental regimens against ALB monotherapy for the treatment of T. trichiura infections in northern Honduras. Infected children were randomized to 4 treatment arms: arm 1, single-dose ALB (400 mg); arm 2, single-dose ALB (400 mg) plus IVM (600 µg/kg); arm 3, ALB (400 mg) for 3 consecutive days; or arm 4, ALB (400 mg) plus IVM (600 µg/kg) for 3 consecutive days. Efficacy was measured based on the egg reduction and cure rates, both assessed 14-21 days after treatment, using the Kato-Katz method. Safety was evaluated by analyzing the frequency and severity of adverse events. RESULTS: Of 176 children randomized to 1 of the 4 treatment arms, 117 completed treatment and follow-up. The egg reduction rates for arms 1, 2, 3, and 4 were 47.7%, 96.7%, 72.1%, and 100%, respectively; with P values <.001 for comparisons between IVM groups and ALB-only arms. The cure rates were 4.2%, 88.6%, 33.3%, and 100%, respectively. A total of 48 adverse events (85.4% mild) were reported in 36 children. CONCLUSIONS: The combined use of ALB and high-dose IVM is a highly effective and well tolerated treatment for the treatment of T. trichiura infections, offering significantly improved treatment for the control of this infection. OBJECTIVES: To compare the shear bond strength (SBS) of the CAD/CAM material-bracket interface using three surface treatments: following manufacturers' instructions (MI), Monobond Etch & Prime (MEP) and 9.6% hydrofluoric acid plus silane (9.6% HF), after 24 h of water storage (24 h) and 10,000 cycles of thermocycling (TC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 126 crowns with four identical buccal surfaces were fabricated using seven different CAD/CAM materials: CEREC Blocs unglazed (CBU), CEREC Blocs glazed (CBG), IPS Empress CAD (EMP), IPS e.max CAD (EMA), VITA SUPRINITY PC (SUP), inCoris TZI (TZI) and VITA ENAMIC (ENA). A total of 504 APC Flash-Free (APC FF)-precoated brackets were bonded applying three surface treatments: (1) MI; (2) MEP and (3) 9.6% HF. SBS was performed after 24 h and TC. Results were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests (p < 0.05). RESULTS: MEP conditioning yielded lower SBS results compared with MI and 9.6% HF for CBG (24 h and TC) and EMA (TC) materials. EMP conditioning with MEP after 24 h obtained lower SBS values compared with MI; however, after TC, SBS was similar to MI group and higher than with 9.6% HF. After TC for TZI ceramic, MI protocol (sandblasting) obtained higher SBS scores than MEP, but similar than 9.6% HF. Treatment of ENA with MI and MEP produced higher results than 9.6% HF after TC. SBS results were similar for CBU and SUP, regardless of the treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Although each CAD/CAM material requires specific surface treatment to obtain the highest SBS of APC FF brackets, the treatment with MEP is a valid orthodontic alternative for most of the materials tested. TC significantly decreased SBS for most of the materials. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: MEP can be considered a valid and promising product to condition most of the CAD/CAM ceramics evaluated for APC FF bracket bonding purposes, allowing a faster and safer procedure.

This experimental work reproduces the fipronil extra-label administration performed by producers in laying hens. The scientific goal was to characterize the residual concentrations in eggs from treated hens and suggest the withdrawal periods that should be respected to avoid risk for consumers. Thirty-four laying hens were allocated into two groups: Group A was treated with fipronil in feed, two single doses of 1 mg kg-1  day-1 ; Group B was administered a single dose of 1 mg kg-1 by the topical route. Fipronil egg residues were quantified by HPLC-MS/MS. Fipronil and its sulphone metabolite (fipronil-SO2 ) were measured in egg after both treatments. The highest egg residual profile was always for fipronil-SO2 . Mean maximum egg concentrations (Cmax ) of 228.5 ± 79.8 ng/g (fipronil) and 1,849 ± 867 ng/g (fipronil-SO2 ) were found after fipronil administration in feed. The lowest residual levels were quantified after the topical treatment with Cmax of 27.1 ± 4.9 and 163 ± 26 ng/g for fipronil and fipronil-SO2 . Mean fipronil marker residues and established MRLs allowed calculating the withdrawal periods, the shortest being 74 days after topical administration. Such a long withdrawal period is difficult to meet in egg production systems. Thus, the extra-label use of fipronil in laying hens should not be recommended under any circumstances.

To compare the 1-year clinical performance of lithium disilicate and resin composite CAD/CAM onlay restorations. Twenty patients that required two restorations in posterior teeth, with at least one cusp to be covered, received two onlays. One was made with IPS e.max CAD (Ivoclar-Vivadent) and the other with Lava Ultimate (3M Oral Care). Two blind observers evaluated the restorations at baseline and 1 year after the onlays were cemented, according to FDI criteria. At each recall, digital photographs, bite-wing radiographs and impressions of the restorations were taken for SEM evaluation of the interface. Results were analyzed by Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon tests (p < 0.05). At baseline and in the 1-year recall, both CAD/CAM materials exhibited excellent results in most criteria with similar esthetic, functional and biological properties (p > 0.05). However, deterioration in surface lustre (p = 0.020) and color match/translucency (p = 0.039) were detected for IPS e.max CAD onlays after 1-year. Under SEM evaluation, there were no statistically differences in micromorphological criteria at baseline nor after a year between IPS e.max CAD and Lava Ultimate onlays. Conclusion: After 1 year of clinical service IPS e.max CAD and Lava Ultimate onlays showed a similar clinical performance that needs to be confirmed in long-term evaluations.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of chitosan polymer on dentinal enzymatic activity by means of gelatin and in situ zymography. Human dentin was frozen and ground in a miller. Dentin powder aliquots were demineralized with phosphoric acid and treated with three different concentrations of lyophilized chitosan polymer (1, 0.5 and 0.1 wt%) dissolved in distilled water. Dentin proteins were extracted from each experimental group and electrophoresed under non-reducing conditions in 10% SDS-PAGE containing fluorescein-labeled gelatin. After 48 h in the incubation buffer at 37 °C, proteolytic activity was registered under long-wave UV light scanner and quantified by using Image J software. Furthermore, additional teeth (n = 4) were prepared for the in situ zymographic analysis in unrestored as well as restored dentin pretreated with the same chitosan primers. The registered enzymatic activity was directly proportional to the chitosan concentration and higher in the restored dentin groups (p < 0.05), except for the 0.1% chitosan primer. Chitosan 0.1% only showed faint expression of enzymatic activity compared to 1% and 0.5% concentrations. Chitosan 0.1% dissolved in water can produce significant reduction in MMPs activity and could possibly contribute to bond strength preservation over time.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Zirconia restorations can be processed by using stereolithography additive manufacturing (AM) technologies. However, whether additive manufactured zirconia could achieve flexural strength values comparable with those of milled zirconia is unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the flexural strength and Weibull characteristics of milled and additive manufactured zirconia. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 40 zirconia bars (25×4×1.2 mm) were obtained by using 2 manufacturing procedures, subtractive (CNC group) (IPS e.max ZirCAD; Ivoclar Vivadent AG) and additive manufacturing (AM group) (3DMix ZrO2; 3DCeram) technologies and assigned to 2 subgroups according to accelerating artificial aging procedures (mastication simulation): nonaged and aged (n=10). Flexural strength was measured in all specimens by using 3-point bend tests according to ISO/CD 6872.2 with a universal testing machine (Instron Model 8501; Instron Corp). Two-parameter Weibull distribution values, including the Weibull modulus, scale (m), and shape (0) were calculated. Flexural strength values were analyzed by using 2-way ANOVA and Student t statistical tests (α=.05). RESULTS: The manufacturing procedure (P<.001), the mastication simulating aging procedure (P<.001), and the interaction between them (P<.001) significantly affected flexural strength values. The CNC group exhibited statistically higher flexural strength values than those in the AM group when the specimens were tested before performing an aging procedure (P<.001) and after mastication simulation (P<.001). Moreover, mastication simulation produced a significant reduction in flexural strength for both the CNC group (P<.039) and the AM group (P<.001). CONCLUSIONS: The manufacturing process reported a significant effect on the flexural strength of the zirconia material tested. Mastication simulation as a means of accelerating artificial aging resulted in the significantly decreased flexural strength values of milled and additively manufactured zirconia material, with the Weibull moduli being significantly higher for the milled groups versus the milled specimens.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of 0.1% chitosan (Ch) solution as an additional primer on the mechanical durability and enzymatic activity on dentine using an etch-and-rinse (E&R) adhesive and a universal self-etch (SE) adhesive. Microtensile bond strength and interfacial nanoleakage expression of the bonded interfaces for all adhesives (with or without pretreatment with 0.1% Ch solution for 1 min and air-dried for 5 seconds) were analyzed immediately and after 10,000 thermocycles. Zymograms of protein extracts from human dentine powder incubated with Optibond FL and Scotchbond Universal on untreated or Ch-treated dentine were obtained to examine dentine matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activities. The use of 0.1% Ch solution as an additional primer in conjunction with the E&R or SE adhesive did not appear to have influenced the immediate bond strength (T0) or bond strength after thermocycling (T1). Zymography showed a reduction in MMP activities only for mineralized and demineralized dentine powder after the application of Ch. Application of 0.1% Ch solution does not increase the longevity of resin-dentine bonds. Nonetheless, the procedure appears to be proficient in reducing dentine MMP activities within groups without adhesive treatments. Further studies are required to comprehend the cross-linking of Ch with dentine collagen.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate if the addition of a layer of a hydrophobic bonding resin to the recommended application sequence of a universal adhesive improves the respective clinical behavior in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) after 36 months. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Scotchbond Universal Adhesive (SBU, 3M Oral Care) was applied in NCCLs of 39 subjects using four adhesion strategies: (1) three-step ER (etch-and-rinse), (2) two-step ER, (3) two-step SE (self-etch), and (4) one-step SE. An extra layer of a hydrophobic bonding resin was applied for strategies three-step ER and two-step SE. The same composite resin (Filtek Supreme XTE, 3M Oral Care) was used for all strategies. Restorations were evaluated at baseline and 18 and 36 months using the modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria. Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U, Friedman, and Wilcoxon non-parametric tests were computed. RESULTS: The cumulative failure rate was 8.6%. The 36-month retention rates were 100% for both 3-ER and 2-ER, 76.0% for 2-SE, and 86.2% for 1-SE. A lower retention rate was observed for two-step SE at 36 months compared with both three-ER (p < 0.01) and two-ER (p < 0.01). Identical retention rates were measured for the two SE groups. When retention rate was compared at baseline versus 36 months for each adhesion strategy, a significant decrease was observed for 2-SE. The restorations performed with 3-ER, 2-SE, and 1-SE had a significant deterioration in marginal discoloration at the 18-month recall. CONCLUSIONS: The 36-month clinical performance of Scotchbond Universal Adhesive improved for both etch-and-rinse strategies. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Phosphoric acid etching is still recommended to provide retention to composite restorations in NCCLs.

Ascaris suum is a widespread parasitic nematode that causes infection in pigs with high prevalence rates. Oxfendazole (OFZ) is effective against A. suum when used at a single high oral dose of 30 mg/kg. The aim of this study was to assess the pattern of distribution/accumulation of OFZ and its metabolites, in bloodstream (plasma), mucosal tissue and contents from small and large intestine and adult specimens of A. suum collected from infected and treated pigs. The activity of glutathione-S-transferases (GSTs) in A. suum was also investigated. Infected pigs were orally treated with OFZ (30 mg/kg) and sacrificed at 0, 3, 6 and 12 h after treatment. Samples of blood, mucosa and contents from both small and large intestine as well as adult worms were obtained and processed for quantification of OFZ/metabolites by HPLC. OFZ was the main analyte measured in all of the evaluated matrixes. The highest drug concentrations were determined in small (AUC0-t 718.7 ±â€¯283.5 µg h/g) and large (399.6 ±â€¯110.5 µg h/g) intestinal content. Concentrations ranging from 1.35 to 2.60 µg/g (OFZ) were measured in adult A. suum. GSTs activity was higher after exposure to OFZ both in vivo and ex vivo. The data obtained here suggest that the pattern of OFZ accumulation in A. suum would be more related to the concentration achieved in the fluid and mucosa of the small intestine than in other tissues/fluids. It is expected that increments in the amount of drug attained in the tissues/fluids of parasite location will correlate with increased drug concentration within the target parasite, and therefore with the resultant treatment efficacy. The results are particularly relevant considering the potential of OFZ to be used for soil transmitted helminths (STH) control programs and the advantages of pigs as a model to assess drug treatment to be implemented in humans.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The polymerization of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) composite resins during their manufacture enhances their physical properties and biocompatibility but might compromise their reparability. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine the microtensile bond strength and nanoleakage (NL) of aged LAVA Ultimate (LU) CAD-CAM composite resin after different repair protocols. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty-eight LU miniblocks were prepared, thermocycled (10000 cycles, 5°C to 55°C), and assigned to 10 surface pretreatment and bonding protocols: (1) tribochemical silica coating (CoJet, CoJet Sand; 3M ESPE)+Scotchbond Universal Adhesive (SBU; 3M ESPE); (2) CoJet+silane (SI, ESPE Sil; 3M ESPE)+Adper Scotchbond 1 XT Adhesive (XT; 3M ESPE); (3) CoJet+10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate-based silane (MO; Monobond Plus; Ivoclar Vivadent AG)+XT; (4) CoJet+XT; (5) 30-µm alumina airborne-particle abrasion (AL)+SBU; (6) AL+SI+XT; (7) AL+MO+XT; (8) AL+XT; (9) no pretreatment+SBU; and (10) no pretreatment+XT. All blocks were repaired using the Filtek Supreme XTE (3M ESPE) composite resin. Stick-shaped specimens (0.9×0.9 mm) were obtained and submitted to microtensile bond strength (µTBS) and %NL testing after 24 hours. µTBS data were analyzed with 1-way ANOVA, followed by the Tukey post hoc test, and NL data with nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests (α=.05). RESULTS: For µTBS, CoJet, and AL pretreatments showed significantly higher mean µTBS, especially when used together with SBU. No pretreatment+XT yielded the lowest mean µTBS. For NL, marginal sealing improved significantly after the use of SBU regardless of the surface treatment. This improvement was only statistically different after tribochemical silica coating. CONCLUSIONS: Airborne-particle abrasion with alumina particles, silica coated or not, together with the application of SBU resulted in the highest mean µTBS. The lowest %NL was recorded when aged LU blocks were repaired using SBU.

This work characterized the egg residual concentrations of albendazole (ABZ) and its sulphoxide (ABZSO) and sulphone (ABZSO2 ) metabolites and evaluated their effect on egg fertility and hatchability after ABZ treatments to laying hens. Seventy hens were allocated in groups: Group-1 was the control without treatment; Group-2 received a single ABZ oral dose (10 mg/kg); Group-3, -4 and -5 were treated with ABZ in medicated feed over 7 days at 10, 40, or 80 mg kg-1  day-1 , respectively. Eggs were analyzed to determine the ABZ/metabolite level by HPLC or subjected to incubation to evaluate the fertility and hatchability. Only ABZSO and ABZSO2 metabolites were quantified in egg after ABZ single oral administration with maximum concentrations of 0.47 ± 0.08 and 0.30 ± 0.07 µg/ml, respectively. ABZ and its metabolites were found in eggs after 7-day ABZ treatments. The egg residue exposure estimated as AUCs (areas under the concentration vs. time curve) were 100.5 (ABZ), 56.3 (ABZSO) and 141.3 µg hr g-1 (ABZSO2 ). ABZ administration did not affect the egg fertility at any dosages. Egg hatchability was not affected by ABZ treatment at 10 mg/kg in medicated feed, but it decreased when the dose was 4-8 times higher. These results should be considered when ABZ is used for deworming laying hens.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Titanium frameworks for implant-supported prostheses can be additively manufactured using different powder-based fusion technologies, including selective laser melting (SLM) and electron beam melting (EBM). Some manufacturers have developed a technique that combines the printing of the framework with the subsequent machining of the implant interface. Whether these technologies produce frameworks with acceptable accuracies is unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the discrepancy obtained from the digitizing procedures of the definitive cast, the implant-prosthesis discrepancy, and the distortion of the manufacturing processes in the fabrication of titanium frameworks for implant-supported complete-arch prostheses manufactured using SLM and EBM additive manufacturing technologies. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A completely edentulous mandibular definitive cast with 4 implant analogs and a replica of a screw-retained interim restoration was obtained. A standard tessellation language (STL) file of the framework design was prepared using dental software (Exocad). Six frameworks were manufactured using either SLM (3D Systems) or EBM (Arcam) technologies. Discrepancy (µm) was measured at the x- (mesiodistal), y- (buccolingual), and z- (occlusogingival) axes by using the formula 3D=x2+y2+z2 three times by best-fit superimposure of the definitive cast STL file, the definitive cast titanium framework, and the framework STL file by using a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) controlled by software (Geomagic). The Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U statistical tests were used (α=.05). RESULTS: The digitizing procedures of the definitive cast showed a mean accuracy of 3 ±3 µm. Except for the z-axis (P<.05), no significant differences were observed between the SLM and EBM technologies for implant prosthesis discrepancy for the x- or y-axis (P>.05). The most favorable results were obtained in the z-axis, representing the occlusogingival direction. Three-dimensional discrepancy measurements in all comparisons ranged between (60 ±18 µm and 69 ±30 µm) and were not statistically significant (P>.05). The highest discrepancy was observed in the y-axis (37 to 56 µm), followed by the x- (16 to 44 µm) and z- (6 to 11 µm) axes (P<.05). CONCLUSIONS: The titanium frameworks analyzed for a complete-arch implant-supported prosthesis fabricated using either the SLM or EBM additive technologies showed a clinically acceptable implant-prosthesis discrepancy, where similar discrepancies on the x-, y-, and z-axes were found between the additive manufacturing technologies. Both technologies showed comparable abilities to manufacture the STL file additively on the x-, y-, and z-axes.

PURPOSE: To study the influence of a polyalkenoate copolymer (VCP) on the immediate (24 h) and 6-month dentin bonding stability of VCP-based adhesives, using microtensile bond strength (µTBS), nanoleakage (NL), and ultramorphological analyses (FE-SEM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty-four caries-free molars were randomly assigned to seven adhesives: Clearfil SE Bond (CSE, Kuraray Noritake); Adper Single Bond Plus (SB, 3M ESPE); SB without VCP (SBnoVCP, 3M ESPE); Scotchbond Universal Adhesive applied as a etch-and-rinse adhesive (SBU_ER); SBU without VCP applied as an etch-and-rinse adhesive (SBUnoVCP_ER); SBU applied as a self-etch adhesive (SBU_SE, 3M ESPE); SBU without VCP applied as a self-etch adhesive (SBUnoVCP_SE, 3M ESPE). Half of the beams were tested after 24 h, and the other half was aged in water for 6 months prior to testing. For each tooth/evaluation time, two beams were randomly selected for NL analysis. Statistical analyses of µTBS results were performed using two-way ANOVA, Tukey's post-hoc tests, and Student's t-test for paired data (α = 0.05). Nanoleakage was statistically analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests, with Wilcoxon's test for paired data. For FE-SEM, four caries-free molars were assigned to each of the seven groups. Dentin disks were restored and cross sectioned into halves. One half was observed at 24 h, and the other at 6 months. RESULTS: The highest 6-month mean µTBS was obtained with SBU_SE/SBUnoVCP_SE and SBUnoVCP_ER. SBUnoVCP_SE resulted in greater silver deposition at 6 months. FE-SEM observations showed that CSE and SBU_SE specimens resulted in a submicron hybrid layer without signs of degradation at 6 months. CONCLUSIONS: VCP may contribute to the long-term bonding stability of VCP-based adhesives.
