RESUMEN

Thyroid Eye Disease (TED) is an inflammatory autoimmune condition affecting the eyes, often associated with Graves' disease. Inflammation is important in TED, involving immune cells and orbital tissues. While inflammatory markers have been studied in other diseases, their role in TED is unclear. We included 734 participants from 5 eligible studies investigated associations between neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) and TED. Initial analysis found no significant differences in these markers between TED and control groups. However, sensitivity analysis excluding an outlier study revealed significant differences in NLR, PLR, and MLR between groups, suggesting the potential association between these inflammatory markers and TED. More research is needed, but these findings indicate complex TED pathogenesis and that inflammation may offer insights for TED diagnosis and management.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the association between early-onset cataract and tinnitus using a population-based database. METHODS: Retrospective claims data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database were analysed. Study subjects comprised patients with early-onset cataract, aged 20-55 years and diagnosed between 2000 and 2010 (n = 2084) and a comparison cohort without the disease (n = 8336). Both cohorts were followed until 2010 to estimate the incidence of tinnitus. To calculate the risk of tinnitus in the case and control groups, Cox proportional hazards models were used and presented as hazard ratios (HRs), adjusted HRs (aHRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: Patients with early-onset cataract had 1.53-fold increased risk (HR = 1.53, 95% CI = 1.17-2.01, p < 0.01) of developing tinnitus than controls. The number of patients with vertigo (p < 0.0001), insomnia (p < 0.0001), anxiety (p < 0.0001) and hearing loss (p < 0.0001) as comorbidities was also significantly higher in the case group. After adjusting for age, sex and all listed comorbidities, patients with increasing age (aHR = 1.04, 95% CI = 1.02-1.07), early-onset cataract (aHR = 1.32, 95% CI = 1.01-1.74), vertigo (aHR = 1.75, 95% CI = 1.15-2.67), insomnia (aHR = 1.48, 95% CI = 1.14-1.93) and hearing loss (aHR = 6.20, 95% CI = 3.58-10.70) had significantly higher risk of tinnitus. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with early-onset cataract are at an increased risk of developing tinnitus in subsequent years and should receive further evaluation for early diagnosis and management if any signs of tinnitus occur.

BACKGROUND: Blepharoptosis correction in oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy (OPMD) patients may result in severe ocular complications owing to lagophthalmos and ophthalmoplegia. Managing the acute episode to prevent further aggravation of the keratopathy or blindness is of paramount importance. METHODS: A review of the literature for severe chemosis, keratopathy, and corneal ulceration in the patient population was performed using the PubMed database, with key words including ptosis surgery, ptosis correction, ptosis repair, and oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy. A retrospective review of all patients with blepharoptosis from a single surgeon from September 2009 and May 2017 was performed, selecting those with OPMD who underwent blepharoptosis correction. RESULTS: Our literature review revealed a total of 15 articles after excluding repeated articles and selecting those meeting our inclusion criteria. A total of 232 OPMD patients underwent blepharoptosis correction. Severe ocular complications were noted in 7 patients, with treatment unspecified. For 9 years, 2 OPMD patients at our institute underwent blepharoptosis correction, with one developing severe acute keratitis, chemosis, and corneal ulceration due to lagophthalmos and ophthalmoplegia. Use of the temporary drawstring tarsorrhaphy and topical eye drop treatment for 2 weeks led to resolution of corneal ulcerations without necessitating further intervention. CONCLUSIONS: Severe ocular complications may occur after blepharoptosis correction in OPMD patients, potentially owing to lagophthalmos and ophthalmoplegia. Temporary drawstring tarsorrhaphy is an effective option to treat these adverse outcomes.

PURPOSE: This study surveyed the novel autoantigens expressed in the orbital fat tissue of patients with Graves' orbitopathy (GO) and explored the possibility of the autoantibodies against novel autoantigens as biomarkers for GO. METHODS: We used immuno-proteomic methods to survey novel autoantigens expressed in the orbit fat tissue of GO patients and confirmed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). RESULTS: One protein spot (aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2)) revealed high reactivity with the GO serum than did the healthy control serum and was further verified by ELISA. We found that the plasma anti-ALDH2 antibody level was increased in GO patients compared to healthy control donors. In addition, anti-ALDH2 antibody level was correlated with GO activity classified by clinical activity score(r = 0.588, p < 0.001, using Pearson's correlation). CONCLUSIONS: These increased levels of anti-ALDH2 antibody in GO serum suggested that ALDH2 could attribute target autoantigen in GO, and anti-ALDH2 autoantibody might serve as a biomarker for GO and help to predict disease activity.

Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a worldwide threat to public health. Toll-like receptor 8 (TLR8) is critical for eliminating RNA viruses, and variation within the TLR8 gene may alter the function of TLR8 in response to HCV infection. Our previous study demonstrated that the TLR8-129G>C (rs3764879) and TLR8+1G>A (rs3764880) variants were in complete linkage disequilibrium, and that the frequency of TLR8-129C/+1A was significantly higher in male patients with HCV infection compared with the healthy controls. In the present study, we found that the promoter activity of TLR8-129G was higher than that of TLR8-129C in THP-1 cells. Moreover, TLR8-129G mRNA stability and competitive DNA-binding ability were significantly lower than that of TLR8-129C. To investigate the functional effects of TLR8 polymorphisms, we compared the nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB)-driven luciferase activity in HEK293 cells transfected with the TLR8 variants. TLR8+1A plasmids induced less NF-κB signalling than did those transfected with TLR8+1G after 20 µm CL075 (P = 0.011) stimulation. We also analysed the mRNA expression and cytokine production in whole blood and monocytes from people of various genotypes stimulated ex vivo by the interferon-γ and TLR7/8 agonist CL075, R848. TLR8 expression in CD14⁺ cells derived from volunteers with TLR8-129G/+1G was significantly higher than that derived from TLR8-129C/+1A, and interleukin-12p40 production was higher in volunteers with TLR8-129G/+1G after stimulation. The data indicate that variations in TLR8 genes may modulate immune responses during HCV infection.

Aim: To explore the association between two systemic inflammation markers, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), and glaucoma. Materials & methods: The authors searched PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library for eligible studies comparing PLR and LMR levels in glaucoma patients and healthy controls. Results: Analysis revealed that glaucoma patients exhibited significantly elevated PLR levels and reduced LMR compared with nonglaucoma controls. These findings were consistent across various glaucoma types, with the exception of secondary glaucoma, where the association with PLR was less significant. Conclusion: The authors found PLR and LMR to be potential valuable biomarkers for glaucoma identification and progression monitoring. These findings highlight the role of systemic inflammation in glaucoma pathogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid orbitopathy (TO) is a multi-system inflammatory disease characterized by orbital congestion, ocular surface disorders, restrictive myopathy, and skin lesions. The molecular and cellular processes of pathogenic formation of TO orbital fat tissues are not fully understood. In this study, a comparative proteomic analysis was conducted to investigate the importance of some differential proteins of orbital fat tissues in TO. METHODS: The differential proteins were analyzed by comparing the two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) maps of the orbital fat tissues of TO with those of normal orbital fat tissues. The 2-DE results were further verified by Western blot and immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Fifteen up-regulated and two down-regulated proteins in TO orbital fat tissues in comparison with the control were exhibited by 2-DE maps. The over-expressed proteins including guanine nucleotide-binding protein, isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH), annexin A2, heat shock protein 60 (HSP 60), calreticulin (CALR), protein disulfide-isomerase A3 (PDIA3), spectrin, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and transitional endoplasmic reticulum ATPase (TER ATPase) may contribute to increased thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor (TSHR) expression and cell proliferation. The proteomic data of specific proteins are consistent with those determined by Western blot and immunohistochemistry. CONCLUSIONS: Comparison of orbital fat proteins from thyroid orbitopathy with age-matched controls shows significant differences in the proteome, and up-regulations of the specific proteins in orbital fat tissues from TO are associated with biochemical mechanisms or capacities against endoplasmic reticulum stress, mitochondria dysfunction, and cell proliferation as well as apoptosis in TO orbital fat tissues.

Purpose: To determine the risk of ptosis among diabetic retinopathy (DR) patients. Methods: This is a population-based, retrospective, matched-cohort study where DR patients were recruited from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) to investigate the risk of developing ptosis. Preexisting co-factors of interest included smoking status and medical comorbidities of hyperlipidemia and hypertension. Statistical analysis was performed using T-test, Cox-proportional hazard ratios adjusted for comorbidities (aHR), Wilcoxon rank sum test, Kaplan-Meier estimators, and log rank tests. Results: Follow-up data of 9,494 patients with DR and 37,976 matched control cohort (non-DR) from 2000 to 2012 were analyzed. DR patients were found to have significantly increased risk of developing ptosis (adjusted hazard ratio (HR) [95% CI]: 2.76 [1.74-4.38], p < 0.001) when compared to the control cohort. From analysis in different strata, adult age and non-smokers were shown to have higher risk for ptosis development among DR patients. Furthermore, DR patients was also found to have increased risk of developing ptosis when compared to matched controls, regardless of whether they had medical comorbidities of lipid metabolism disorders or hypertension. Conclusions: In this large-scale study using real-world data, our results showed that DR patients were found to have increased risk of developing ptosis. Female gender, adult age, and non-smokers were also shown to increase the risk of ptosis among DR patients. This has implications towards the care of diabetic patients, complications such as ptosis should be properly screened for when encountering such patients. Before ptosis surgery, the possibility of underlying diabetes or DR should be also scrutinized and treated properly to avoid undesirable postoperative dissension.

Little is known about any consequences of swallowing tobacco-free betel-quid (TF-BQ) juice/remnants following chewing and its carcinogenic impact on the upper aerodigestive tract (UADT) to gastrointestinal tract (GIT). We investigated the neoplastic impact of TF-BQ on different anatomical locations along UADT and GIT, and differences according to their histological categories. We conducted a multicenter case-control study examining patients with 2,163 pathology-proven UADT and GIT cancers, comparing them with 2,250 control subjects. Generalized additive models, piecewise regression and polytomous logistic models were applied to identify possible dose-dependent structures and cancer risks. Contrary to nonsignificant GIT-adenocarcinoma risk (aOR=0.9), TF-BQ users experienced a 1.7- to 16.2-fold higher risk of UADT-squamous cell carcinomas than nonusers, with the peak risk discovered in oral neoplasms. We separately observed a curvilinear and linear TF-BQ dose-risk relationship in oral/pharyngeal/esophageal and laryngeal cancers. Chewers of betel inflorescence were generally at a greater UADT cancer risk. A higher first-piecewise increased risk of esophageal cancer was recognized among areca-fluid swallowers than among nonswallowers (continuous aOR=1.12 vs. 1.03). TF-BQ use accounted for 66.1-78.7% and 17.8-33.2% of the cases of oral/pharyngeal and esophageal/laryngeal cancers, respectively. However, a reduction from heavy TF-BQ consumption to low-to-moderate consumption only reduced 11.3-34.6% of etiologic fraction of oral/pharyngeal cancers. Alcohol supra-additively modified the risk of TF-BQ in determining the development of oral, pharyngeal and esophageal cancers. In conclusion, the interplay of TF-BQ and alcohol/tobacco use, combined with how chewing habit is practiced, influences carcinogenic consequences on anatomically diverse sites of UADT and GIT cancers, and histologically different types.

We report an atypical case of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) of bilateral lacrimal glands and paranasal sinus following mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma of the lung. Bilateral DLBCL is rare in the literature, and only few cases of DLBCL in bilateral lacrimal gland are reported. A 71-year-old male presented with bilateral, slowly enlarging, and swelling of both eyelids. Computed tomography scan images showed bilateral symmetric, hyperdense, circumferential masses over lacrimal glands occupying most of the orbital compartment. Neither optic nerve involvement nor adjacent orbital walls erosion was noted. Bilateral excisional biopsy and pathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of DLBCL. Since DLBCL of bilateral lacrimal gland can occur in case of systemic MALT lymphoma, excision and pathological examination is mandatory, and further metastatic workup is essential.

ABSTRACT: Although uveitis can be an intraocular presentation of systemic lymphoma, it may be associated with direct lymphomatous infiltration and immune-mediated alterations. There have been no published studies describing the incidence of uveitis after systemic lymphoma. We conducted a nationwide cohort study to investigate the incidence of uveitis after systemic lymphoma diagnosis in Taiwan. Data were collected from the Taiwan National Health Insurance system and included patients newly diagnosed with systemic lymphoma between 2000 and 2017. We observed the risk of uveitis among study population since the index date until December 2017. The 1:8 of systemic lymphoma patient and paired comparison was identified by time distribution matching and individual paired with sex and age. Subsequent propensity score matching (PSM) was used to select the 1:1 of systemic lymphoma patient and paired comparison by greedy algorism with caliper of 0.05. The multiple Cox proportional hazard regression model was used to compare the developmental risk of uveitis (time-to-uveitis) between the systemic lymphoma and non-systemic lymphoma, while controlling for selected covariates. After time distribution matching, we selected 6846 patients with systemic lymphoma, and 54,768 comparisons. Among patients with systemic lymphoma groups, there were more men than women (52.94% vs 47.06%) and the mean age was 53.32 ±â€Š21.22 years old. Systemic lymphoma incidence rates (per 10,000 person-months) of uveitis were 1.94 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.60-2.35) in the systemic lymphoma cohort and 1.52 (95% CI, 1.42-1.63) in the non-systemic lymphoma cohort. Compared with the non-systemic lymphoma cohort, adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) of developing uveitis were 1.24 (95% CI, 1.00-1.52) in people with systemic lymphoma. But not significant in after PSM, aHR of developing uveitis were 1.17 (95% CI, 0.90-1.53). This 18-year nationwide population-based cohort study in Taiwan, showed that the risk of uveitis in patients' systemic lymphoma was not significantly higher than non-systemic lymphoma after PSM. In elderly and rheumatic patients with intraocular inflammation, it is important to first exclude uveitis masquerade syndrome, which could be a harbinger of intraocular involvement from systemic lymphoma. Further large-scale prospective clinical studies to investigate whether systemic lymphoma influences the incidence of uveitis are warranted.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at increased risk of uveitis. METHODS: Data was collected from the Taiwan National Health Insurance system and included patients newly diagnosed with CKD between 2000 and 2012. The endpoint of interest was a diagnosis of uveitis. RESULTS: 30,256 CKD patients and 121,024 matched comparisons were analyzed. CKD patients were found to have a significantly higher cumulative uveitis incidence. Through multivariate Cox regression analysis, the CKD group was found to have higher risk of developing uveitis (adjusted hazard ratio 1.51). After stratified by gender, age, and comorbidities (hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia), the increased risk of uveitis in CKD patients remained significant. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with CKD were found to have higher risk of developing uveitis. For patients over 18 years old and with hypertension, diabetes, or hyperlipidemia, the presence of CKD was demonstrated as an additional crucial factor for uveitis development.

BACKGROUND: Recognition of how risk factors affect the age when cancers are first diagnosed may help to establish more appropriate cancer screening and preventive strategies. METHODS: To investigate the independent and synergistic effects of alcohol, tobacco-free betel-quid (TF-BQ), and cigarette use on diagnosis age and dissemination of upper aerodigestive tract squamous cell carcinoma (UADT-SCC), we recruited pathology-proven 1522 patients with UADT-SCC for study. RESULTS: A 49-, 53-, 57-, and 62-year-old stepwise older median age at carcinoma diagnosis was, respectively, found among patients with oral, pharyngeal, esophageal, and laryngeal cancer. Oral cavity (53.2%) and larynx (11.6%) were separately the dominant and recessive sites where the UADT-SCC occurred. Although alcohol and tobacco bestowed increased risks of earlier tumor occurrence only for oral/pharyngeal and oral cancers, respectively, TF-BQ was consistently observed to confer elevated age-associated risks for each UADT-SCC [adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) = 1.6-2.3]. Alcohol and TF-BQ joint consumers experienced a stepwise increased cumulative risk (CR) of contracting carcinomas of the larynx (46.2%), esophagus (47.5%), pharynx (53.5%), and oral cavity (60.5-71.0%), with >68% of CRs found among drinkers who started chewing before age 20. Alcohol + Betel + Cigarette and Alcohol + Betel users exhibited earlier diagnosis ages than non-users: 10 years ahead for oral cancer, 7, 17, and 12 years earlier for pharyngeal, esophageal, and laryngeal cancers. Noticeably, higher cumulative cancer risks regarding earlier tumor occurrence were correspondingly identified for these users aged 43, 49, 43, and 44 upward. CONCLUSIONS: Tobacco-free betel-quid, in conjunction with alcohol and/or tobacco consumption, impacts early cancer occurrence for specific UADT-SCC and influences tumor site incidence pattern of these neoplasms.

RESUMEN

Penetrating orbital injury with a foreign body is a complex problem that requires an interdisciplinary therapeutic approach. Conventionally, an external approach using either transconjuntival or transseptal entry is used by an ophthalmologist. However, there is a risk of damage to the optic nerve and orbital tissue using only the traditional approach. This study concerns a 36-year-old male who has an intra-orbital foreign body (OrbFB). Timely three-dimensional reconstruction computed tomography scan demonstrated an 8-cm-long intra-OrbFB adjacent to the optic nerve penetrating to the contralateral nasal cavity. Endoscopic inspection confirmed a chopstick fragment. Assisted by transnasal endoscopy, the chopstick penetrating from the orbit to the nasal cavity was smoothly removed. Nasal endoscopy is useful for an ophthalmologist in removing foreign body in the orbit.

We report the rescue effect of intravitreal aflibercept injections on retinal neovascularization and macular edema due to Eales disease. Case 1 was a 36-year-old female. Intravitreal aflibercept was administered as rescue therapy after persistent retinal neovascularization following retinal photocoagulation, periocular triamcinolone, and intravitreal ranibizumab injection. Retinal neovascularization initially regressed, but recurred after 5 months along with macular edema. Two more intravitreal aflibercept injections were given, and retinal neovascularization with macular edema regressed. Her vision improved to 20/25 and remained stable after 43 months. Case 2 was a 27-year-old female. Intravitreal aflibercept was administered after persistent retinal neovascularization and macular edema following periocular triamcinolone injection. The macular edema initially subsided but recurred after 3 months. Intravitreal aflibercept injections were then administered once every three months to maintain her vision 20/20. The patient has been followed up for 28 months. Intravitreal aflibercept was effective as a rescue therapy in the treatment of Eales disease to regress retinal neovascularization, though repeated injections were necessary in cases of recurrence.

Purpose: To investigate whether patients with thyroid disease are at increased risk of uveitis.Methods: Data was collected from the Taiwan National Health Insurance system and included patients newly diagnosed with thyroid disease from 2000 to 2012. The endpoint of interest was a diagnosis of uveitis.Results: In analyzing 21,396 patients with thyroid disease, yielding 85,584 matched comparisons, patients with thyroid disease to have a significantly higher cumulative incidence of uveitis when compared to the control cohort with the Kaplan-Meier analysis. This result was further confirmed by Cox regression analysis. The increased risk was persistent in both genders. The association between thyroid disease and uveitis was stronger in patients without diabetes or hypertension.Conclusion: Patients with thyroid disease were found to have a higher risk for uveitis. For certain age groups or patients without diabetes or hypertension, the role of thyroid disease might be more crucial for uveitis development.

The pathophysiology of Horner's syndrome arises due to compression or destruction of the oculosympathetic nerve pathway. Traumatic Horner's syndrome may indicate lethal neurovascular injury, such as brain stem lesion, cervical spine injury, or carotid artery dissection. The middle-third is the most common type of clavicle fracture. However, the association of the isolated middle-third clavicle fracture and Horner's syndrome is rare. We report the case of a 47 year-old woman who presented to our emergency department with acute trauma. Severe tenderness and limited mobility were observed in her left shoulder. On radiographic examination, a middle-third clavicle fracture was diagnosed. Ptosis and myosis were also noticed on further examination, and she was subsequently diagnosed with Horner's syndrome. A survey of the brain, cervical spine, carotid artery, and lung revealed no pathological findings. Surgery for the clavicle fracture was performed 2 days after the accident. The patient recovered from Horner's syndrome gradually over the 2 months following the surgery, and the syndrome completely resolved by the third month. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of traumatic Horner's syndrome caused by an isolated middle-third clavicle fracture. The improved outcome may be attributed to the surgical intervention for middle-third clavicle fracture, which may help release ganglion or neuronal compression.

ABSTRACT: We investigate whether patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at increased risk of retinal vascular disease (RVD). Data was collected from the Taiwan National Health Insurance system and included patients newly diagnosed with CKD between 2000 and 2012. The endpoint of interest was a diagnosis of RVD. Follow-up data of 85,596 patients with CKD and 85,596 matched comparisons (non-CKD) from 2000 to 2012 were analyzed. Patients with CKD were found to have a significantly higher cumulative incidence of RVD (Kaplan-Meier analysis, log-rank test P < .0001). Through multivariate Cox regression analysis, the CKD group was found to have higher risk of developing RVD (adjusted hazard ratio (HR) [95% confidence interval (CI)]: 2.30 [2.16-2.44]) when compared to the control cohort. When comparison of CKD group and non-CKD group was stratified by gender, age and comorbidities (hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia), the higher risk of RVD in patients with CKD remained significant in all subgroups. Patients with CKD were found to have higher risk of developing RVD in this cohort study. In addition, CKD imposed the same risk for RVD development in all age groups and in patients with or without hypertension or diabetes. Thus, patients with CKD should be vigilant for symptoms of RVD. Understanding the link between CKD and RVD could lead to the development of new treatment and screening strategies for both diseases.

Introduction: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of intravitreal dexamethasone (DEX) implants in refractory diabetic macular edema (DME) treated by intravitreal ranibizumab. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed DME patients who received DEX implant treatment after being refractory to at least 3 monthly intravitreal ranibizumab injections. The main outcomes were best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central retinal thickness (CRT), and intraocular pressure (IOP). Results: Twenty-nine eyes of 26 patients who had previously received an average of 8.1 ± 4.4 ranibizumab injections were included. Patients received between one and three DEX implants during 12.4 ± 7.4 months of follow-up. The mean final CRT significantly decreased from 384.4 ± 114.4 µm at baseline to 323.9 ± 77.7 µm (p = 0.0249). The mean final BCVA was 51.4 ± 21.3 letters, which was not significant compared to baseline (44.9 ± 30.2 letters, p = 0.1149). Mean IOP did not increase significantly. All patients tolerated the treatment well without serious adverse events. Higher baseline CRT and worse BCVA correlated with better therapeutic responses. Conclusion: Switching to DEX implant is feasible and safe for treating patients of DME refractory to intravitreal ranibizumab in real world. Further larger-scale or multicenter studies would be conducted to explore different DEX treatment strategies for DME, such as first-line or early switch therapy, for better BCVA improvement.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the efficacy of micro-incision vitrectomy surgery using a non-contact wide-angle viewing system for fovea-attached type epiretinal membrane, and to report the factors influencing the outcome. METHODS: A retrospective, comparative case series that included 50 patients with fovea-attached type epiretinal membrane who received micro-incision vitrectomy surgery using a non-contact wide-angle viewing system. RESULTS: All patients were followed-up for a minimum of 12 months. Seven cases were classified as group 1A (mainly outer retinal thickening), 17 were group 1B (more tenting of outer retina and distorted inner retina), and 26 were group 1C (prominent inner retina thickening and inward tenting of outer retina). Outcome measures included operation time, recurrent rate, postoperative BCVA, and CRT. The mean operative time was 26.2 minutes. The mean change of BCVA (LogMAR) was -0.43 (p< 0.001). The mean change of CRT was 135.3 µm (p< 0.001). The mean change of CRT was significantly higher in group 1C. Worse preoperative BCVA, male gender, and longer operative time can predict better postoperative BCVA found by multivariate logistic regression and multiple regression models. CONCLUSION: Significant improvement in BCVA and CRT is noted after micro-incision vitrectomy surgery to operate fovea-attached type epiretinal membranes. Worse preoperative BCVA, male, and longer operation time could predict better improvement. These findings may assist surgeons in better evaluating the potential of this method to help their patients with epiretinal membranes.
