RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Elevated exhaled nitric oxide fraction at a flow rate of 50 mL·s-1 (F ENO50 ) is an important indicator of T-helper 2-driven airway inflammation and may aid clinicians in the diagnosis and monitoring of asthma. This study aimed to derive Global Lung Function Initiative reference equations and the upper limit of normal for F ENO50 . METHODS: Available individual F ENO50 data were collated and harmonised using consensus-derived variables and definitions. Data collected from individuals who met the harmonised definition of "healthy" were analysed using the generalised additive models of location, scale and shape (GAMLSS) technique. RESULTS: Data were retrospectively collated from 34 782 individuals from 34 sites in 15 countries, of whom 8022 met the definition of healthy (19 sites, 11 countries). Overall, height, age and sex only explained 12% of the between-subject variability of F ENO50 (R2=0.12). F ENO device was neccessary as a predictor of F ENO50 , such that the healthy range of values and the upper limit of normal varied depending on which device was used. The range of F ENO50 values observed in healthy individuals was also very wide, and the heterogeneity was partially explained by the device used. When analysing a subset of data in which F ENO50 was measured using the same device and a stricter definition of health (n=1027), between-site heterogeneity remained. CONCLUSION: Available F ENO50 data collected from different sites using different protocols and devices were too variable to develop a single all-age reference equation. Further standardisation of F ENO devices and measurement are required before population reference values might be derived.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Multiple breath washout is a lung function test based on tidal breathing that assesses lung volume and ventilation distribution. The aim of this analysis was to use the Global Lung Function Initiative methodology to develop all-age reference equations for the multiple breath washout indices lung clearance index (LCI) and functional residual capacity (FRC). METHODS: Multiple breath washout data from healthy individuals were collated from sites. Data were re-analysed using the latest software versions. Reference equations were derived using the lambda-mu-sigma (LMS) method using the generalised additive models of location shape and scale programme in R. The impact of equipment type, inert tracer gas, and equipment dead space volume on the derived reference ranges were investigated. RESULTS: Data from 23 sites (n=3647 test occasions) were submitted. Reference equations were derived from 1581 unique observations from participants between the ages of 2 and 81 years. Equipment type, inert tracer gas, and equipment dead space volume did not significantly affect the prediction equations for either LCI or FRC. Reference equations for LCI include age as the only predictor, whereas sex-specific reference equations for FRC included height and age. CONCLUSIONS: Global Lung Function Initiative reference equations for multiple breath washout variables provide a standard for reporting and interpretation of LCI and FRC.

RESUMEN

Metamaterials exhibit unique ultrasonic properties that are not always achievable with traditional materials. However, the structures and geometries needed to achieve such properties are often complex and difficult to obtain using common fabrication techniques. In the present research work, we report a novel metamaterial acoustic delay line with built-in impedance matching that is fabricated using a common 3D printer. Delay lines are commonly used in ultrasonic inspection when signals need to be separated in time for improved sensitivity. However, if the impedance of the delay line is not perfectly matched with those of both the sensor and the target medium, a strong standing wave develops in the delay line, leading to a lower energy transmission. The presented metamaterial delay line was designed to match the acoustic impedance at both the sensor and target medium interfaces. This was achieved by introducing graded engineered voids with different densities at both ends of the delay line. The measured impedances of the designed metamaterial samples show a good match with the theoretical predictions. The experimental test results with concrete samples show that the acoustic energy transmission is increased by 120% and the standing wave in the delay line is reduced by over a factor of 2 compared to a commercial delay line.

RESUMEN

Studies of cellular and cytokine profiles have contributed to the inflammation hypothesis of schizophrenia; however, precise markers of inflammatory dysfunction remain elusive. A number of proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) studies in patients with first-episode psychosis (FEP) have shown higher brain levels of metabolites such as glutamate, myo-inositol (mI) and choline-containing compounds (tCho), suggesting neuroinflammation. Here, we present peripheral inflammatory profiles in antipsychotic-naive FEP patients and age-and-sex matched healthy controls, as well as cortical glutamate, mI and tCho levels using 1H-MRS. Inflammatory profiles were analyzed using cytokine production by peripheral blood mononuclear cells, that were either spontaneous or stimulated, in 48 FEP patients and 23 controls. 1H-MRS of the medial prefrontal cortex was obtained in 29 FEP patients and 18 controls. Finally, 16 FEP patients were rescanned after 4 weeks of treatment (open-label) with Risperidone. FEP patients showed a higher proportion of proinflammatory Th1/Th17 subset, and an increased spontaneous production of Interleukin (IL)-6, IL-2 and IL-4 compared with the control group. Results obtained from 1H-MRS showed no significant difference in either glutamate, mI or tCho between FEP and control groups. At baseline, CD8% showed a negative correlation with glutamate in FEP patients; after 4 weeks of risperidone treatment, the FEP group exhibited a decrease in glutamate levels which positively correlated with CD4 + T cells. Nevertheless, these correlations did not survive correction for multiple comparisons. FEP patients show evidence of immune dysregulation, affecting both the innate and adaptive immune response, with a predominantly Th2 signature. These findings, along with the changes produced by antipsychotic treatment, could be associated with both systemic and central inflammatory processes in schizophrenia.

RESUMEN

Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) has been shown to have prognostic value in a number of different clinical settings, such as cardiovascular disease, including heart failure. However, its prognostic value in heart transplant (HT) recipients remains unknown. The aim of this systematic review is to determine the prognostic value of pre-transplant RDW for mortality in HT recipients. There is a pre-published protocol of this review. The terms "Heart transplant", "Red cell distribution width" and their synonyms were used in the search strategy. PubMed/Medline, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science and LILACS were searched until May 17th, 2022, without date or language restrictions. Two authors independently carried out the selection, first by title and abstract, second by full-text revision. Discrepancies were discussed and resolved with three other authors. Quality of individual studies was assessed with Newcastle Ottawa Scale (NOS) for cohorts. After removing the duplicates, 3885 articles were identified. Four articles were included in the qualitative synthesis. Three studies were classified as "good quality": whereas one as "poor quality" according to NOS scale. All the included articles evaluated long-term mortality and one study also evaluated short-term mortality. In this one, a correlation between higher RDW values and short-term mortality was reported. Meanwhile, in all the studies, a high pre-HT RDW was a marker of long-term mortality following cardiac transplantation. Our review shows that an elevated on-admission RDW is associated with long-term mortality in heart transplantation recipients.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium associated with gastroduodenal disease and gastric cancer. Empirical therapy in the treatment of H. pylori infection increases the risk of apparition of antimicrobial drug resistance. In a previous report, in H. pylori clinical isolates, resistance rates to commonly used antimicrobial drugs were as follows: metronidazole 82%, clarithromycin 3.8%, and amoxicillin 1.9%. The aim was to establish the variation of resistance rates and the detection of H. pylori genetic mutations isolated from dyspeptic patients. METHODS: Antimicrobial susceptibility profiles were performed by the E-test method for metronidazole, clarithromycin, amoxicillin, and tetracycline in 61 clinical isolates. Sequencing was performed to detect mutations associated with resistance to clarithromycin. RESULTS: According to our results, resistance rates found in the 61 isolates were 78.60% for metronidazole and 8.20% for clarithromycin. None of the studied isolates had resistance to tetracycline and amoxicillin. Secondary resistance rates displayed an increase when compared to primary rates for metronidazole (87.50 vs. 77.35%) and for clarithromycin (25.66 vs. 5.66%). Of 5 isolates resistant to clarithromycin, 3 had the A2143G mutation. By comparing the results in this work with previous reports, antimicrobial drug resistance rates did not show major modifications for metronidazole, amoxicillin, and tetracycline during the last 10 years. For clarithromycin, the resistance rate showed a moderate increase; nevertheless, it remains low (<15%) and this change was not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Together, all findings in this work indicate that these antimicrobial drugs can still be used as first line of defense on infected patients living in this region of the country.

RESUMEN

Our research group has developed a cell-penetrating peptide-based delivery system that includes the Asn194Lys mutation in the rabies virus glycoprotein-9R peptide (mRVG-9R). This system has the capacity to deliver DNA in astrocytes and SH-SY5Y cells. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of the mRVG-9R peptide to deliver DNA molecules to murine brain cells. The mRVG-9R peptide, a karyophilic peptide (KP) and a plasmid encoding green fluorescent protein (GFP) were bound by electrostatic charges to form the mRVG-9R complex. mRVG-9R complex was injected into the cerebral cortex, striatum and hippocampus of C57BL/6 mice by stereotactic surgery. After 2, 4, and 20 days, the animals were sacrificed and their brains were prepared for quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction and histological analysis. We detected the GFP expression in neurons and glial cells in the cerebral cortex, striatum, and hippocampus of the murine brain. The results suggest that the mRVG-9R peptide has the ability to deliver DNA molecules to murine brain cells. Also, the expression of the reporter gene is maintained at least up to 20 days after injection in neurons, astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and microglia cells. Thus, the in vivo transfection ability of the mRVG-9R peptide, makes it a promising candidate as a therapeutic gene delivery vector to the central nervous system cells.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The gastroduodenal mucosal layer is a complex and dynamic system that functions in an interdependent manner to resist injury. We review and summarize the most updated knowledge about gastroduodenal defense mechanisms and specifically address (a) the mucous barrier, (b) membrane and cellular properties, and vascular, hormonal, and (c) gaseous mediators. RECENT FINDINGS: Trefoil factor family peptides play a crucial role in cellular restitution by increasing cellular permeability and expression of aquaporin channels, aiding cellular migration and tissue repair. Additionally, evidence suggests that the symptoms of functional dyspepsia may be attributed to alterations in the duodenum, including low-grade inflammation and increased mucosal permeability. The interaction of the various mucosal protective components helps maintain structural and functional homeostasis. There is increasing evidence suggesting that the upper GI microbiota plays a crucial role in the defense mechanisms. However, this warrants further investigation.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) in the US has declined. The decreasing trend is observed in non-Hispanic Whites, Blacks, and Hispanics. However, close analysis of the trends demonstrates that the decline among Hispanics is less than other races/ethnicities. We investigate the burden of CRC in Hispanics living near the U.S.-Mexico border, a subpopulation of Hispanics composed primarily of individuals of Mexican origin. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to investigate and compare incidence rates of CRC in non-Hispanic Whites and Hispanics living in counties along the U.S.-Mexico border. METHODS: Data from the National Institutes of Health National Cancer Institute and State Cancer Profiles were analyzed to obtain CRC incidence rates (per 100,000 population) for persons ≥ 50 years of age residing in counties along the U.S.-Mexico border by race (non-Hispanic White and Hispanic) and gender from 2011 to 2015. RESULTS: Incidence rates of CRC in Hispanic men ≥ 50 years of age, living in counties along the U.S.-Mexico border, were higher than the national average for Hispanic men of similar age. In contrast, the incidence of CRC declined or remained stable in non-Hispanic Whites and women. CONCLUSIONS: Our study unveils a significant disparity in CRC incidence among Hispanics living near the U.S.-Mexico border, disproportionally affecting men ≥ 50 years of age. Socioeconomic and cultural/lifestyle factors are likely contributing to these disparities.

RESUMEN

Plum edible part was used to obtained extracts by during a 4 h maceration process using three different solvents (ethanol, methanol and water) for the determination of total phenols and flavonoids, antioxidant capacity by (2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and hemolysis inhibition in human blood assays. Subsequently, phenolic compounds were identified using ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC-MS). The results indicated that the ethanolic extract of plum fruit being a good source of phenolic (12⁻18 mg GAE/g FW) and flavonoids (2.3⁻2.5 mg QE/g FW) content in both varieties of plum. Also, the fruits proved a good source of antioxidants as measured by DPPH and ABTS; likewise, plum aqueous extracts showed the highest protective effect on human erythrocytes with 74.34 and 64.62% for yellow and red plum, respectively. A total of 23 bioactive compounds were identified by UPLC-MS, including gallic acid, rutin, resorcinol, chlorogenic acid, catechin, and ellagic acid, and the antioxidant capacity can be attributed to these species. The edible part of plum contains compounds of biological interest, suggesting that this fruit has antioxidant potential that can be exploited for various technologies.

RESUMEN

In the last decade several new genera have been isolated in alkaline and halophile growth conditions. The studies conducted in the Texcoco Lake soils have shown a generalized microbial adaptation to the specific conditions. In this research work, morphological and phylogenetic characterization of the HN31(22) strain that was isolated from the cited soil is presented. The strain was identified as a Gram-positive halophile and alkaline tolerant bacteria from the Nesterenkonia genus, which uses different substrates in metabolic processes.

RESUMEN

AIMS: To study whether health-care workers feel capable of making resuscitation decisions for their own families, the confidence in their family to represent their own preferences, and if some health-care workers feel greater confidence in their ability to undertake such decisions for their family than others. METHODS: An anonymous survey conducted among health-care workers of nine institutions in North and Central America. The self-administered questionnaire included demographic and professional characteristics, attitudes, personal preferences, and value judgments on the topic of resuscitation. RESULTS: Eight hundred and fifty-eight surveys were completed; 21.1% by physicians, 37.2% by nurses, and 41.7% by other health-care. Most of the health-care workers (83.5%) stated that they should be unable to determine their own code status and they would allow their family or spouse/significant other to make this decision for themselves. Physicians felt significantly more capable of making a decision regarding the code status of a close family member than other hospital workers (P = 0.019). Professionals who chose to not undergo cardiopulmonary resuscitation were less likely to feel capable of determining the code status of their family. CONCLUSIONS: Most of the health-care workers feel capable of making code status decisions for a close family member and most feel equally comfortable having their family or spouse/significant other represent their code status preference should they be incapacitated. There is considerable reciprocity between the two situations. Physicians feel more confident in their ability to make code status decisions for their loved ones than other health-care workers. Regardless of profession, a personal preference for do not attempt resuscitation status is related to less confidence.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Rhabdomyolysis is a clinical syndrome that comprises destruction of skeletal muscle with outflow of intracellular muscle content into the bloodstream. There is a great heterogeneity in the literature regarding definition, epidemiology, and treatment. The aim of this systematic literature review was to summarize the current state of knowledge regarding the epidemiologic data, definition, and management of rhabdomyolysis. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted using the keywords "rhabdomyolysis" and "crush syndrome" covering all articles from January 2006 to December 2015 in three databases (MEDLINE, SCOPUS, and ScienceDirect). The search was divided into two steps: first, all articles that included data regarding definition, pathophysiology, and diagnosis were identified, excluding only case reports; then articles of original research with humans that reported epidemiological data (e.g., risk factors, common etiologies, and mortality) or treatment of rhabdomyolysis were identified. Information was summarized and organized based on these topics. RESULTS: The search generated 5632 articles. After screening titles and abstracts, 164 articles were retrieved and read: 56 articles met the final inclusion criteria; 23 were reviews (narrative or systematic); 16 were original articles containing epidemiological data; and six contained treatment specifications for patients with rhabdomyolysis. CONCLUSION: Most studies defined rhabdomyolysis based on creatine kinase values five times above the upper limit of normal. Etiologies differ among the adult and pediatric populations and no randomized controlled trials have been done to compare intravenous fluid therapy alone versus intravenous fluid therapy with bicarbonate and/or mannitol.

RESUMEN

The haloalkaliphilic bacterium Kocuria sp. (HJ014) has the ability to produce extracellular amylase. The aim of this study was to purify and characterize this protein. The amylase enzyme with a specific activity of 753,502 U/mg was purified 5.7- fold using Sepharose 4B and Sephacryl S-300 gel filtration columns. The molecular weight of the enzyme was 45,000 Da as determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). The amylase showed maximum activity at pH 9 and 50°C in the presence of 3.5 M NaCl. The Km was 3.0 mg/ml and Vmax 90.09 U/ml. It was found that extracellular amylase from Kocuria sp. has a high industrial potential.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the leading cause of death from cancer in the female population; consequently, there are multiple prevention campaigns. Within these campaigns, a special emphasis is given on promoting monthly breast self-examination; however, many women have never received formal education on proper method of self-examination. OBJECTIVE: To establish if the educational intervention we propose improves the breast self-examination technique. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A descriptive longitudinal study that included 52 women aged 20-40 years, attending a Family Medicine Unit of the Mexican Institute of Social Security, who were evaluated about self-examination technique before and after educational intervention, measured on a scale of 0 to 16. Statistical analysis was made with descriptive statistics and Student's t test. RESULTS: The mean age was 30.76 ± 5.87 years. The mean baseline score was 3.13 ± 2.55. The final average score after a month of the educational intervention was 10.69 ± 2.74, which represents an increase in average score of 7.55 ± 3.53. There was a significant increase in assessment scores after the educational intervention (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: "Supervised breast self-examination" technique showed an increase in the ability of self-examination in patients. It can be considered an effective complementary method of teaching breast self-examination.

RESUMEN

Joint hypermobility syndrome (JHS) is a non-inflammatory hereditary disorder of connective tissue with varied clinical presentations, including frequent joint dislocations, hyperextensible skin, easy bruising, and abnormal paper-thin scar formation. Many of these patients have unexplained gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. Our aim was to evaluate the prevalence of JHS in a tertiary gastroenterology motility clinic and the spectrum of functional bowel disorders in JHS patients. In this retrospective case series, we screened the medical records of 277 patients seen over 4 years at an academic GI Motility Center. The patients who met the criteria for JHS by Beighton hypermobility score were evaluated for the presence of functional GI disorders by Rome IV criteria. They also underwent gastric emptying study and glucose breath testing for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. The prevalence of JHS in the study population was 9.7%. The mean age was 27 years, and 92.5% were female. The symptoms experienced by these patients include nausea/vomiting (89%), abdominal pain (70%), constipation (48%), and bloating (18.5%). The disorders associated with JHS include gastroparesis (52%), irritable bowel syndrome (55.5%), and gastroesophageal reflux disease (30%). Also, 10 patients (37%) were diagnosed with postural hypotension tachycardia syndrome secondary to autonomic dysfunction. Approximately 10% of patients with suspected functional bowel disorders have hypermobility syndrome. Hence, it is crucial to familiarize gastrointestinal practitioners with the criteria utilized to diagnose JHS and the methods to identify physical examination findings related to this condition.

RESUMEN

Although concerns have been raised regarding potential infection and morbidity in women undergoing ablation treatment for cervical precancer in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), there is extremely limited data to substantiate this claim. This is a secondary analysis of a randomized non-inferiority trial (id: NCT03084081) that compares the efficacy and safety of three ablation treatments for biopsy-confirmed cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 or higher (CIN2+): CO2 gas-based cryotherapy, non-gas cryotherapy, and thermal ablation (TA). Here, we present findings regarding the incidence of sexually transmitted infections (STI) and vaginitis post-treatment. Samples were collected at enrollment and again at 6 weeks post-treatment and assessed for STIs (Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), Neisseria gonorrhea (NG), and Trichomonas vaginalis (TV)) and vaginitis (Bacterial vaginosis (BV) and/or Candida albicans (Candida)). This analysis reflects 864 women with baseline and 6-week follow-up data. None of the ablative treatments put women at increased risk for STIs (CT, NG, TV) or vaginitis (BV, Candida). While most women adhered to post-treatment recommendations (97%) and no difference by treatment arm was observed, the incidence of STIs at follow-up in women that did not adhere with a given recommendation was higher compared to their adherent counterparts. The incidence of gynecologic infection did not increase with any of the ablation treatments from baseline to the six-week follow-up. Non-gas cryotherapy and TA emerge as safe alternatives to gas-based cryotherapy with respect to gynecologic infection rates.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Cost of illness studies are important tools to summarise the burden of disease for individuals, the healthcare system and society. The lack of standardised methods for reporting costs for cystic fibrosis (CF) makes it difficult to quantify the total socioeconomic burden. In this study, we aimed to comprehensively report the socioeconomic burden of CF in Canada. METHODS: The total cost of CF in Canada was calculated by triangulating information from three sources (Canadian CF Registry, customised Burden of Disease survey and publicly available information). A prevalence-based, bottom-up, human capital approach was applied, and costs were categorised into four perspectives (ie, healthcare system, individual/caregiver, variable (ie, medicines) and society) and three domains (ie, direct, indirect and intangible). All costs were converted into 2021 Canadian dollars (CAD) and adjusted for inflation. The cost of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) modulator therapies was excluded. RESULTS: The total socioeconomic burden of CF in Canada in 2021 across the four perspectives was $C414 million. Direct costs accounted for two-thirds of the total costs, with medications comprising half of all direct costs. Out-of-pocket costs to individuals and caregivers represented 18.7% of all direct costs. Indirect costs representing absenteeism accounted for one-third of the total cost. CONCLUSION: This comprehensive cost of illness study for CF represents a community-oriented approach describing the socioeconomic burden of living with CF and serves as a benchmark for future studies.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE.: To identify the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in wastewater from hospitals in Peru. MATERIALS AND METHODS.: Water samples were collected from the effluents of nine hospitals in Peru during March and September 2022. SARS-CoV-2 was identified by using Illumina sequencing. Variant, lineage and clade assignments were carried out using the Illumina and Nextclado tools. We verified whether the SARS-CoV-2 variants obtained from wastewater were similar to those reported by the National Institute of Health of Peru from patients during the same period and region. RESULTS.: Eighteen of the 20 hospital wastewater samples (90%) provided sequences of sufficient quality to be classified as the Omicron variant according to the WHO classification. Among them, six (30%) were assigned by Nextclade to clades 21K lineage BA.1.1 (n=1), 21L lineage BA.2 (n=2), and 22B lineages BA.5.1 (n=2) and BA .5.5 (n=1). CONCLUSIONS.: SARS-CoV-2 variants were found in hospital wastewater samples and were similar to those reported by the surveillance system in patients during the same weeks and geographic areas. Wastewater monitoring could provide information on the environmental and temporal variation of viruses such as SARS-CoV-2.Motivation for the study. To contribute to the surveillance of environmental samples from hospital effluents in order to achieve early warning of possible infectious disease outbreaks. Main findings. The Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus was detected in wastewater from hospitals in Puno, Cuzco and Cajamarca; these results are similar to the reports by the Peruvian National Institute of Health based on nasopharyngeal swab samples. Implications. The presence of the Omicron variant in hospital wastewater during the third wave of the pandemic should raise awareness of the treatment system before wastewater is discharged into the public sewer system.

RESUMEN

The aim of the present study was first to isolate Helicobacter pylori from gastric biopsy specimens and to test their antibiotic susceptibility. Second, it was to evaluate the efficacy of the standard triple therapy from patients of the west central region of Colombia. H. pylori positive patients received standard triple therapy with proton pump inhibitor (PPI) (40 mg b.i.d.), clarithromycin (500 mg b.i.d.), and amoxicillin (1 g b.i.d.) for 14 days. Thereafter, antibiotic susceptibility of the isolates was assessed by E-Test. From 94 patients enrolled, 67 were positive for H. pylori by histology or culture. Overall resistance to metronidazole, levofloxacin, rifampicin, clarithromycin, and amoxicillin was 81%, 26.2%, 23.9%, 19%, and 9.5%, respectively. No resistance was found for tetracycline. A total of 54 patients received standard triple therapy, 48 attended follow-ups testing, and of them, 30 had resistance test reports. Overall eradication rate was 81.2%. Second-line treatment was given to eight patients, four of whom were followed up with a 13C urea breath test (UBT) and remained positive for H. pylori. Eradication was significantly higher in patients with clarithromycin susceptible than in resistant strains (95.6% vs 42.8% P = 0.001). The updated percentages of resistance to clarithromycin in this geographical area had increased, so this value must be considered when choosing the treatment regimen.IMPORTANCEAntibiotic resistance in Helicobacter pylori has increased worldwide, as has resistance to multiple antimicrobials (MDRs), which seriously hampers the successful eradication of the infection. The ideal success rate in eradicating H. pylori infection (≥90%) was not achieved in this study (81.2%). This is the first time that MDR is reported (14.3%) in the region; the resistance to clarithromycin increased over time (3.8%-19%), and levofloxacin (26.2%) and rifampicin (23%) resistant isolates were detected for the first time. With these results, strain susceptibility testing is increasingly important, and the selection of treatment regimen should be based on local antibiotic resistance patterns.
