RESUMEN

Brassinosteroid activated kinase 1 (BAK1) is a cell-surface coreceptor which plays multiple roles in innate immunity of plants. HopF2 is an effector secreted by the bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 into Arabidopsis and suppresses host immune system through interaction with BAK1 as well as its downstream kinase MKK5. The association mechanism of HopF2 to BAK1 remains unclear, which prohibits our understanding and subsequent interfering of their interaction for pathogen management. Herein, we found the kinase domain of BAK1 (BAK1-KD) is sufficient for HopF2 association. With a combination of hydrogen/deuterium exchange mass spectrometry and mutational assays, we found a region of BAK1-KD N-lobe and a region of HopF2 head subdomain are critical for intermolecular interaction, which is also supported by unbiased protein-protein docking with ClusPro and kinase activity assay. Collectively, this research presents the interaction mechanism between Arabidopsis BAK1 and P. syringae HopF2, which could pave the way for bactericide development that blocking the functioning of HopF2 toward BAK1.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of telitacicept in adult patients with primary SS (pSS) in a phase II randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial. METHODS: Patients with pSS with positive anti-SSA antibody and ESSDAI ≥ 5 were randomly assigned, in a 1:1:1 ratio, to receive weekly subcutaneous telitacicept 240 mg, 160 mg, or placebo for 24 weeks. The primary end point was the change from baseline in the ESSDAI at week 24. Safety was monitored. RESULTS: A total of 42 patients were enrolled and randomized (n = 14 per group). Administration of telitacicept 160 mg resulted in a significant reduction in ESSDAI score from baseline to week 24 compared with placebo (P < 0.05). The placebo-adjusted least-squares mean change from baseline was -4.3 (95% CI -7.0, -1.6; P = 0.002). While, mean change of ESSDAI in telitacicept 240 mg was -2.7(-5.6-0.1) with no statistical difference when compared that in placebo group (P = 0.056). In addition, MFI-20 and serum immunoglobulins decreased significantly (P < 0.05) at week 24 in both telitacicept groups compared with placebo. No serious adverse events were observed in the telitacicept treating group. CONCLUSION: Telitacicept showed clinical benefits and good tolerance and safety in the treatment of pSS. RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Our study aims to delineate the miRSNP-microRNA-gene-pathway interactions in the context of hypertrophic scars (HS) and keloids. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a computational biology study involving differential expression analysis to identify genes and their mRNAs in HS and keloid tissues compared to normal skin, identifying key hub genes and enriching their functional roles, comprehensively analyzing microRNA-target genes and related signaling pathways through bioinformatics, identifying MiRSNPs, and constructing a pathway-based network to illustrate miRSNP-miRNA-gene-signaling pathway interactions. RESULTS: Our results revealed a total of 429 hub genes, with a strong enrichment in signaling pathways related to proteoglycans in cancer, focal adhesion, TGF-ß, PI3K/Akt, and EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor resistance. Particularly noteworthy was the substantial crosstalk between the focal adhesion and PI3K/Akt signaling pathways, making them more susceptible to regulation by microRNAs. We also identified specific miRNAs, including miRNA-1279, miRNA-429, and miRNA-302e, which harbored multiple SNP loci, with miRSNPs rs188493331 and rs78979933 exerting control over a significant number of miRNA target genes. Furthermore, we observed that miRSNP rs188493331 shared a location with microRNA302e, microRNA202a-3p, and microRNA20b-5p, and these three microRNAs collectively targeted the gene LAMA3, which is integral to the focal adhesion signaling pathway. CONCLUSIONS: The study successfully unveils the complex interactions between miRSNPs, miRNAs, genes, and signaling pathways, shedding light on the genetic factors contributing to HS and keloid formation.

RESUMEN

Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) content in milk may have been underestimated due to the neglect of the esterified SCFAs content and the lack of an accurate detection method, especially for C1:0, C2:0, and C3:0 SCFAs. In this study, an accurate gas chromatography-mass spectrometry profiling method was established for 10 SCFAs. A 2-step esterification, including alkaline saponification (60°C for 30 min) and acid-catalyzed esterification (80°C for 150 min) in water/isopropyl/hexane (1:2:1, volume ratio), was found to be the most suitable for the quantification of esterified and nonesterified SCFAs analysis. The validation results demonstrate satisfactory linearity, sensitivity, matrix effects, precision, and accuracy. The recoveries of nonesterified and esterified SCFAs ranged from 82.78% to 112.49%, respectively. Human milk is distinguished from cow milk by its higher C1:0 and C2:0 content and lower C4:0 and C6:0 content. This method successfully accomplished qualitative and quantitative estimation of all 10 SCFAs in milk, including both nonesterified and esterified SCFAs. Furthermore, whether our method is applicable for the determination of SCFAs in serum, rumen fluid, and feces remains to be explored.

RESUMEN

Applying organic fertilizer is the main way to enhance soil fertility through the interfacial reaction between mineral and dissolved organic matter (DOM). However, the interfacial reaction between minerals and DOM may influence antimony(V) (Sb(V)) mobility in agricultural soils around antimony mines. In our study the ferrihydrite (Fh) was chosen as a representative mineral, to reveal the effect of its interaction with chicken manure organic fertilizer (CM-DOM) with Fh on Sb(V) migration. In this study, we investigated different organic matter molecular weights and C/Fe molar ratios. Our findings indicated that the addition of CM-DOM decreased the adsorption of Sb(V) by Fh and promoted the re-release of Sb(V) adsorbed on Fh. This effect was enhanced by increasing the C/Fe molar ratio. Fh mainly affects its interaction with Sb(V) through electrostatic gravitational interaction and ligand exchange, but the presence of CM-DOM weakens the electrostatic interaction between Fh and Sb(V) as well as competes with Sb(V) for the hydroxyl reactive site on Fh surface. In addition, the smaller molecular weight fraction (<10 kDa) of CM-DOM has higher aromaticity and hydrophobicity, which potentially leads to more intense competition with Sb(V) for the reaction sites on Fh. Therefore, the application of organic fertilizer may promote Sb(V) migration, posing significant risks to soil ecosystems and human health, which should be a concern in field soil cultivation.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Exploring the prevalence of dry eye (DE) and the changes of tear film stability in patients with primary acquired obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct (PANDO). METHODS: In this cross-sectional, observational study, 370 eyes in 223 patients with PANDO were assessed. The ocular surface disease index (OSDI) was used to evaluate ocular surface symptoms, and the Keratograph 5M non-invasive ocular surface analyser was used to assess ocular surface parameters. According to the TFOS DEWS II criteria, patients with OSDI ≥ 13 and NIKBUT < 10 s were diagnosed with DE. RESULTS: Of the 223 PANDO patients, 65 (29.1%) met the diagnostic criteria for DE. Compared with patients without DE, PANDO patients with DE were significantly older (p < 0.001), had a longer duration of epiphora (p = 0.023), and more likely to have a positive regurgitation on pressure over the lacrimal sac (ROPLAS) sign (p = 0.003). Multifactorial analysis showed that older age, positive ROPLAS and hypertension were significant independent predictors of DE (p < 0.05). Among the 147 unilateral PANDO patients without DE, the TMH, NIKBUT-first, NIKBUT-average and bulbar erythema scores were significantly higher in the PANDO sides. CONCLUSIONS: This study illustrated the prevalence of DE in PANDO patients was 29.1% and DE is more likely to occur in those who are older, have hypertension and are positive for ROPLAS. In addition, in patients with unilateral nasolacrimal duct obstruction, a decrease in tear film stability was observed in the healthy eye.

RESUMEN

Anti-PD-1-based therapy has resulted in a minimal clinical response in malignant gliomas. Gliomas contain numerous glioma-associated microglia/macrophages (GAMs), reported to contribute to an immunosuppressive microenvironment and promote glioma progression. However, whether and how GAMs affect anti-PD-1 immunotherapy in glioma remains unclear. Here, we demonstrated that M1-like GAMs contribute to the anti-PD-1 therapeutic response, while the accumulation of M2-like GAMs is associated with therapeutic resistance. Furthermore, we found that PD-L1 ablation reverses GAMs M2-like phenotype and is beneficial to anti-PD-1 therapy. We also demonstrated that tumor-induced impairment of the antigen-presenting function of GAMs could limit the antitumor immunity of CD4+ T cells in anti-PD-1 therapy. Our study highlights the impact of GAMs activation on anti-PD-1 treatment and provides new insights into the role of GAMs in regulating anti-PD-1 therapy in gliomas.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous transhepatic cholangioscopic lithotripsy (PTCSL) is a minimally invasive treatment for hepatolithiasis. But it may make a long cycle of treatment so that it was further improved to complete the percutaneous hepatic choledochotomy and choledochoscopic lithotripsy in phase I surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the modified technique comparing with laparoscopic choledochotomy. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of the clinical data of patients with hepatolithiasis or choledocholithiasis consulted at our hospital from February 2018 to December 2021. The cases were divided into two groups according to surgical modality, intraoperative ultrasound-guided percutaneous transhepatic cholangioscopic lithotripsy (IUG-PTCSL) and laparoscopic choledochotomy lithotripsy (LC-L). Contrast analysis determined the advantages of the two approaches. RESULTS: IUG-PTCSL was performed in 44 patients, aged 58.14 ± 14.01 years, including 9 male and 35 female. There were 15 patients underwent LC-L, aged 62.13 ± 15.03 years, including 1 male and 14 female. There was not statistically significant difference in the composition of patients' age and sex between the two groups (p = 0.356, 0.219). The success rate of intraoperative ultrasound-guided percutaneous hepatic bile duct puncture was 100% followed with the success rate of hepatocholangiostomy was 100%. Although 1 (1/44) patient showed significant bleeding during choledochoscopic lithotripsy and was converted to open choledochotomy for stone extraction, 43 patients completed IUG-PTCSL with the rate of phase I surgical stones removal was 81.40% (35/43), whereas the stones removal rate of LC-L was 66.67% (10/15). There was not statistically significant difference between them (p = 0.067). Both the groups showed no significant complications with the postoperative hospital stay of 8 (6, 10) days and 10 (8, 11) days, respectively, and the difference was statistically significant (p = 0.028). CONCLUSION: Intraoperative ultrasound-guided percutaneous transhepatic cholangioscopy might be a safe and reliable ideal method for bile duct stones with the advantages of rapid recovery for patients. Intraoperative ultrasound-guided percutaneous hepatocholangiostomy may be the key technique for the successful completion of the surgery.

RESUMEN

Penicillamine is a chelator that has been used in Wilson's disease, cystinuria, rheumatoid arthritis and heavy metal intoxication. We report a case of a 31-year-old man presented with skin atrophy, purpura and milia on the hips and shoulders after taking penicillamine for 1.5 years. According to literature review, this type of penicillamine-associated cutaneous adverse effect belongs to degenerative dermopathy, which mostly occurs on bony prominences and points of pressure in patients with Wilson's disease or cystinuria. Withdrawal or reduction of drug dose can improve the features of degenerative dermopathy.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The aim was to clarify the distributions of bacteria in the conjunctival sac and lacrimal sac in patients with chronic dacryocystitis. METHODS: In total, 297 (322 eyes) chronic dacryocystitis patients who underwent nasal endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (EN-DCR) were included. Conjunctival sac secretions from the affected eye were collected preoperatively, and lacrimal sac retention fluid from the affected side in the same patient was collected intraoperatively. Bacterial culture and drug sensitivity testing were performed to determine bacterial distributions. RESULTS: In total, 127 bacterial isolates (49 species) were detected in 123 eyes in the conjunctival group, with a positivity rate of 38.2% (123/322); 85 bacterial isolates (30 species) were detected in 85 eyes in the lacrimal sac group, with a positivity rate of 26.4% (85/322). The positivity rates were significantly different (P = 0.001) between two groups. The gram-negative bacilli proportion in the lacrimal sac group (36/85, 42.4%) was significantly higher than that in the conjunctival sac group (37/127, 29.2%) ( P = 0.047). Positive conjunctival sac secretion culture (123/322) was significantly associated with increased ocular secretion (281/322, 87.3%) (P = 0.002). Among the culture-positive bacteria in the conjunctival sac group and the lacrimal sac group, 30/127, 23.6% and 43/127, 26.7% and 21/85, 24.7% and 20/85, 23.5% were resistant to levofloxacin and tobramycin, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This study illustrated differences in bacterial distributions between conjunctival sac secretions and retained lacrimal sac fluid in chronic dacryocystitis patients, with a higher proportion of gram-negative bacilli in lacrimal sac secretions. The ocular surface flora in chronic dacryocystitis patients is partially resistant to levofloxacin and tobramycin, which need to be considered by ophthalmologists.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Trans-fatty acids (TFAs), primarily derived from the food industry's production processes, have become a globally recognized public health issue due to the detrimental impact they have on human well-being. Secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG) is a polyphenolic compound derived from flax lignans, possessing antioxidative properties. This study aims to investigate the protective effect of SDG on kidney oxidative damage in offspring of mice caused by maternal exposure to TFA during pregnancy and lactation. METHODS: A total of 30 c57BL/6 female rats were randomly divided into 5 groups: a control group, a TFA-exposed group, a low-(TFA+LSDG) group, a medium-(TFA+MSDG) group, and a high-(TFA+HSDG) group (n=6 in each group). With the exception of the control group, the maternal mice in the remaining 4 groups received a daily oral gavage of TFA at a dosage of 60 mg/(kg·BW) throughout the experimental period. The mothers in the control group were administered physiological saline via oral gavage once daily. Meanwhile, the 3 SDG intervention groups were provided with ad libitum access to SDG feed containing 10 mg/kg (low), 20 mg/kg (medium), and 30 mg/kg (high) of SDG. The female mice were conceived overnight. If the vaginal plug appeared in the next morning, the female mice were conceived and included in the experimental stage until the end of the 21th day lactation period. The body weight and kidney mass of offspring were recorded, and the kidney coefficient was calculated. The kidney was detected by HE staining to observe the histopathological changes, and the level of reactive oxidative species (ROS) was detected by fluorescence probe-dihydroethidium (DHE) staining; the expression levels of total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in renal homogenate were detected, and the expression of nuclear factor E2-related fator2 (Nrf2) and hemeoxygenase-1 (HO-1) protein was analyzed by immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining. The mRNA expressions of Nrf2 and HO-1 were detected by real-time PCR, and the protein expression of Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn-SOD), Mn-superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD), glutathione peroxidase-1 (GPx-1), Nrf2 and HO-1 were detected by Western blotting. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, the kidney coefficient in the TFA-exposed group was increased, the morphology and structure of kidney tissue was abnormal; the activity of T-SOD enzyme was decreased, and the content of MDA was increased, the level of ROS was increased; the expressions of Cu/Zn-SOD, Mn-SOD, GPx1 protein were decreased, and the mRNA and protein expressions of Nrf2 and HO-1 were decreased, there were all significant difference (all P<0.05). Compared with the TFA-exposed group, the ROS levels were reduced, and the T-SOD enzyme activity as well as the protein expression of Cu/Zn-SOD, GPx-1, Mn-SOD, Nrf2 and HO-1 were up-regulated in the low, middle and high dose SDG intervention groups; the kidney coefficient and MDA content were decreased in the middle and high dose SDG groups; the Nrf2 mRNA expression in the high dose SDG group was up-regulated, there were all significant difference (all P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Maternal exposure to TFA during pregnancy and lactation can lead to oxidative damage in the kidney of offspring, and the SDG intervention may alleviate TFA-induced oxidative damage by up-regulating the expression of Nrf2 and HO-1 signal pathway.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Histone deacetylases (HDACs) play an important role in the regulation of gene expression, which is indispensable in plant growth, development, and responses to environmental stresses. In Arabidopsis and rice, the molecular functions of HDACs have been well-described. However, systematic analysis of the HDAC gene family and gene expression in response to biotic and abiotic stresses has not been reported for sorghum. RESULTS: We conducted a systematic analysis of the sorghum HDAC gene family and identified 19 SbHDACs mainly distributed on eight chromosomes. Phylogenetic tree analysis of SbHDACs showed that the gene family was divided into three subfamilies: RPD3/HDA1, SIR2, and HD2. Tissue-specific expression results showed that SbHDACs displayed different expression patterns in different tissues, indicating that these genes may perform different functions in growth and development. The expression pattern of SbHDACs under different stresses (high and low temperature, drought, osmotic and salt) and pathogen-associated molecular model (PAMPs) elf18, chitin, and flg22) indicated that SbHDAC genes may participate in adversity responses and biological stress defenses. Overexpression of SbHDA1, SbHDA3, SbHDT2 and SbSRT2 in Escherichia coli promoted the growth of recombinant cells under abiotic stress. Interestingly, we also showed that the sorghum acetylation level was enhanced when plants were under cold, heat, drought, osmotic and salt stresses. The findings will help us to understand the HDAC gene family in sorghum, and illuminate the molecular mechanism of the responses to abiotic and biotic stresses. CONCLUSION: We have identified and classified 19 HDAC genes in sorghum. Our data provides insights into the evolution of the HDAC gene family and further support the hypothesis that these genes are important for the plant responses to abiotic and biotic stresses.

RESUMEN

Due to the diversity and limitation of determination methods, published data on the fatty acid (FA) compositions of different milk samples have contributed to inaccurate comparisons. In this study, we developed a high-throughput gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method to determinate milk FA, and the proposed method had satisfactory linearity, sensitivity, accuracy, and precision. We also analyzed the FA compositions of 237 milk samples from Holstein cows, Jersey cows, buffalos, yaks, humans, goats, donkeys, and camels. Holstein, Jersey, goat, and buffalo milks contained high content of even-chain saturated FA, whereas goat milk had higher content of medium- and short-chain FA (MSCFA). Yak and camel milk are potential functional foods due to their high levels of odd- and branched-chain FA and low ratios of n-6 to n-3 polyunsaturated FA (PUFA). Human milk contained lower levels of saturated FA, MSCFA, and conjugated linoleic acid, and higher levels of monounsaturated FA and PUFA. As a special nonruminant milk, donkey milk contained low levels of monounsaturated FA and high levels of PUFA and MSCFA. Based on the FA profiles of 8 types of milk, nonruminant milk was distinct from ruminant milk, whereas camel and yak milk were different from other ruminant milks and considered as potential functional foods for balanced human diet.

RESUMEN

The dynamic interactions among iron (Fe) oxides, dissolved organic matter (DOM) and toxic trace metals play crucial roles in risk assessment and environmental remediation. Although the inhibitory effects of DOM on the iron oxides transformation process have been studied previously, there is still a lack of mechanistic and quantitative understanding on the kinetics of Cr(VI) and ferrihydrite transformation in the present of DOM. In this study, we investigated the fractionation process of DOM on ferrihydrite and its influence on the fate of Cr(VI) and transformation of ferrihydrite. The result of three-dimension excitation emission matrix (3D-EEM), Q-Exactive LC-MS/MS, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) indicated that fulvic acid-like compounds of DOM were the mainly fractionated compounds on the surface of ferrihydrite, which further inhibited the transformation of ferrihydrite. Besides, bracewellite (CrO(OH)) generated as an accompanied mineral during the transformation of ferrihydrite in the present of Cr(VI). Based on the DFT theoretical calculation, we concluded that Cr(VI) mainly in the form of HCr O4- was more inclined to be adsorbed on iron-oxide tetrahedron by inner-sphere monodentate mononuclear configurations. The findings on the dynamic coupling among Fe oxide transformation and Cr(VI) sequestration under the effect of DOM provided the basis for accurately predicting the fate of trace elements and iron mineral.

RESUMEN

Chitosan oligosaccharides (COS) can elicit plant immunity and defence responses in rice plants, but exactly how this promotes plant growth remains largely unknown. Herein, we explored the effects of 0.5 mg/L COS on plant growth promotion in rice seedlings by measuring root and stem length, investigating biochemical factors in whole plants via proteomic analysis, and confirming upregulated and downregulated genes by real-time quantitative PCR. Pathway enrichment results showed that COS promoted root and stem growth, and stimulated metabolic (biosynthetic and catabolic processes) and photosynthesis in rice plants during the seedling stage. Expression levels of genes related to chlorophyll a-b binding, RNA binding, catabolic processes and calcium ion binding were upregulated following COS treatment. Furthermore, comparative analysis indicated that numerous proteins involved in the biosynthesis, metabolic (catabolic) processes and photosynthesis pathways were upregulated. The findings indicate that COS may upregulate calcium ion binding, photosynthesis, RNA binding, and catabolism proteins associated with plant growth during the rice seedling stage.

RESUMEN

The MgMn-layered double oxide (MgMn-LDO), which was fabricated by calcining MgMn-layered double hydroxide (MgMn-LDH), was used to remove tetracycline (TC) and cadmium (Cd) pollution. In MgMn-LDO activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system, 97.1% of TC was degraded within 20 min. The high oxidizing sites exposed on MgMn-LDO surface played a main role on activating PMS to generate OH, SO4-, O2- and 1O2 (the key species) for TC degradation. MgMn-LDO could keep excellent degradation performance in a wide range of pH (from 4 to 10). The degradation degree of TC in distilled water is basically the same as that in Pearl River water, and even above 80% of TC could be degraded in human urine. The good reusability and high structure stability of MgMn-LDO were further verified. Meanwhile, Cd immobilization on MgMn-LDO reached equilibrium within 10 min, and its maximum fixed quantity was 8.234 mmol g-1 (922.208 mg g-1). The outstanding Cd fixed ability resulted from the formation of CdCO3 and Cd (OH)2. In combined system, the existence of TC promoted the immobilization of Cd on MgMn-LDO. Low concentration of Cd (0.0125 mM) had synergism effect on TC degradation, while high concentration of Cd (0.025 and 0.05 mM) had inhibiting action. Finally, a column filled with MgMn-LDO was designed for repairing TC and Cd pollution hierarchically. This study provided an effective strategy to clean up the organic-heavy metal combined pollution.

RESUMEN

In this study, batch experiments were carried out to evaluate the biodegradation of phenol by Sphingomonas sp. GY2B, which were immobilized in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-sodium alginate-kaolin beads under different conditions. The optimal degradation performance was achieved by GY2B immobilized in beads containing 1.0% (w/v) of kaolin, 10% (w/v) of PVA, 0.3% (w/v) of sodium alginate, 10% (v/v) of biomass dosage, and exposed to an initial phenol concentration of 100 mg/L. The experimental results indicated that PVA-sodium alginate-kaolin beads can accelerate the degradation rate of phenol by reducing the degradation time and also improve degradation rate. The biodegradation rate of phenol by immobilized cells (16.79 ±â€¯0.81 mg/(L·h)) was significantly higher than that of free cells (11.49 ±â€¯1.29 mg/(L·h)) under the above optimal conditions. GY2B immobilized on beads was more competent than free GY2B in degradation under conditions with high phenol concentrations (up to 300 mg/L) and in strong acidic (pH = 1) and alkaline (pH = 12) environments. Higher phenol concentrations inhibit the biomass and reduce the biodegradation rate, while the lower biodegradation rate at low initial phenol concentrations is attributed to mass transfer limitations. The Haldane inhibitory model was in agreement with the experimental data well, revealing that phenol showed a considerable inhibitory effect on the biodegradation by Sphingomonas sp. GY2B, especially at concentrations higher than 90 mg/L. Intra-particle diffusion model analysis suggests that adsorption of phenol by immobilized beads was controlled by both rapid surface adsorption as well as pore diffusion mechanism. It's worth noting that the presence of 1 mg/L Cr(VI) enhanced the biodegradation of phenol by free cells, while Cr(VI) showed no obvious impact on the removal of phenol by immobilized cells. In addition, immobilized cells were reused 16 times and removed 99.5% phenol, and when stored at 4 °C for 90 days, more than 99% phenol was removed. These results showed that immobilized cells can significantly improve the microbial degradation performance, and protect microorganisms against unfavorable environment. It is implied that PVA -sodium alginate-kaolin beads have great potential to be applied in a practical and economical phenolic wastewater treatment system.

RESUMEN

A FeOOH-loaded MnO2 nano-composite was developed as an emergency material for Tl(I) pollution incident. Structural characterizations showed that FeOOH successfully loaded onto MnO2, the nanosheet-flower structure and high surface area (191 m2 g-1) of material contributed to the excellent performance for Tl(I) removal. FeOOH-loaded MnO2 with a Fe/Mn molar ratio of 1:2 exhibited a noticeable enhanced capacity for Tl(I) removal compared to that of pure MnO2. The outstanding performance for Tl(I) removal involves in extremely high efficiency (achieved equilibrium and drinking water standard within 4 min) and the large maximum adsorption capacity (450 mg g-1). Both the control-experiment and XPS characterization proved that the removal mechanism of Tl(I) on FeOOH-loaded MnO2 included adsorption and oxidation: the oxidation of MnO2 played an important role for Tl(I) removal, and the adsorption of FeOOH loaded on MnO2 enhanced Tl(I) purification at the same time. In-depth purification of Tl(I) had reach drinking water standards (0.1 µg L-1) at pH above 7, and there wasn't security risk produced from the dissolution of Mn2+ and Fe2+. Moreover, the as-prepared material could be utilized as a recyclable adsorbent regenerated by using NaOH-NaClO binary solution. Therefore, the synthesized FeOOH-loaded MnO2 in this study has the potential to be applied as an emergency material for thallium pollution incident.

RESUMEN

The lip biopsy is essential for the diagnosis of primary Sjogren's syndrome (SS) but an invasive method can cause some disadvantages. The purpose of this study is to apply Raman spectroscopy to detect the pathological minor salivary glands in primary SS and establish the diagnostic model of Raman spectra of the primary SS samples. Raman spectra from the primary samples and control samples were obtained by Raman microscope and were compared to find the differences. The principal component analysis (PCA) and discrimination function analysis (DFA) were employed to analyze the spectra and establish the diagnostic model. The differences of Raman spectra demonstrated the biochemical molecular alterations between the different samples. Compared with the control samples, the content of proteins, nucleic acids, and keratin increased in the primary SS samples but the content of lipids decreased. PCA and DFA displayed a powerful role in the classification of the Raman spectra. The sensitivity and specificity of the diagnostic model reached above 91 and 92%, respectively. The total accuracy is 92.4%. Raman spectroscopy combined with PCA-DFA algorithm will provide an effective and accurate technology for the diagnosis of the pathological minor salivary glands in primary SS, which may replace the lip biopsy in the future.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of multi-disciplinary treatment approaches in reducing neurological disabilities in premature infants. METHODS: A total of 117 infants who were born premature in our hospital between March 2008 and February 2010 but had no congenital malformations and no severe neonatal complications, were enrolled in this study. They were randomly allocated to a multi-disciplinary treatment group (n=63) and a control group (n=54). While patients in the control group underwent an early conventional treatment, those in the multi-disciplinary treatment group were subjected to regular development monitoring, neurological examination and screening for brain injury, neuro-nutrition and neurodevelopment therapies, and rehabilitation training. RESULTS: The incidence rates of abnormalities in posture, reflex, sleep, muscle tone and EEG were significantly lower in the multi-disciplinary treatment group than in the control froup (P<0.05) at corrected postnatal ages of 6-12 months. At corrected postnatal ages of 6, 12, 18 and 24 months, both mental development index (MDI) and psychomotor development index (PDI) scores were significantly higher in the multi-disciplinary treatment group than in the control group (P<0.05). At corrected postnatal age of 3 years, incidence rates of cerebral palsy, language barrier, abnormal muscle tone and hearing impairment were significantly lower in the multi-disciplinary treatment group than in the control group (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Early multi-disciplinary intervention approaches may significantly improve mental and motor developments and reduce the incidence of cerebral palsy-associated neurological disabilities in premature infants.
