RESUMEN

We establish the emergence of chaotic motion in optomechanical systems. Chaos appears at negative detuning for experimentally accessible values of the pump power and other system parameters. We describe the sequence of period-doubling bifurcations that leads to chaos and state the experimentally observable signatures in the optical spectrum. In addition to the semiclassical dynamics, we analyze the possibility of chaotic motion in the quantum regime. We find that quantum mechanics protects the optomechanical system against irregular dynamics, such that simple periodic orbits reappear and replace the classically chaotic motion. In this way observation of the dynamical signatures makes it possible to pin down the crossover from quantum to classical mechanics.

RESUMEN

We introduce a method for calculating the probability with which a low-energy electron hitting the wall of a bounded plasma gets stuck in it and apply the method to a dielectric wall with positive electron affinity smaller than the band gap using MgO as an example. In accordance with electron beam scattering data we obtain energy-dependent sticking probabilities significantly less than unity and question thereby for electrons the perfect absorber assumption used in plasma modeling.

RESUMEN

Using exact numerical techniques, we investigate the nature of excitonic (electron-hole) bound states and the development of exciton coherence in the one-dimensional half-filled extended Falicov-Kimball model. The ground-state phase diagram of the model exhibits, besides band-insulator and staggered orbital ordered phases, an excitonic insulator (EI) with power-law correlations. The criticality of the EI state shows up in the von Neumann entropy. The anomalous spectral function and condensation amplitude provide the binding energy and coherence length of the electron-hole pairs which, on their part, point towards a Coulomb interaction driven crossover from BCS-like electron-hole pairing fluctuations to tightly bound excitons. We show that while a mass imbalance between electrons and holes does not affect the location of the BCS-BEC crossover regime, it favors staggered orbital ordering to the disadvantage of the EI. Within the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) regime, the quasiparticle dispersion develops a flat valence-band top, in accord with the experimental finding for Ta2NiSe5.

RESUMEN

We study for a dielectric particle the effect of surplus electrons on the anomalous scattering of light arising from the transverse optical phonon resonance in the particle's dielectric function. Excess electrons affect the polarizability of the particle by their phonon-limited conductivity, either in a surface layer (negative electron affinity) or the conduction band (positive electron affinity). We show that surplus electrons shift an extinction resonance in the infrared. This offers an optical way to measure the charge of the particle and to use it in a plasma as a minimally invasive electric probe.

RESUMEN

An investigation of the self-consistent ambipolar charge kinetics across a negatively biased semiconducting plasma-solid interface is presented. For the specific case of a thin germanium layer with nonpolar electron-phonon scattering, sandwiched between an Ohmic contact and a collisionless argon plasma, we calculate the current-voltage characteristic and show that it is affected by the electron microphysics of the semiconductor. We also obtain the spatially and energetically resolved fluxes and charge distributions inside the layer, visualizing thereby the behavior of the charge carriers responsible for the charge transport. Albeit not quantitative, because of the crude model for the germanium band structure and the neglect of particle-nonconserving scattering processes, such as impact ionization and electron-hole recombination, which at the energies involved cannot be neglected, our results clearly indicate (i) the current through the interface is carried by rather hot carriers and (ii) the perfect absorber model, often used for the description of charge transport across plasma-solid interfaces, cannot be maintained for semiconducting interfaces.

RESUMEN

We investigate the phase diagram of bosons interacting via Feshbach-resonant pairing interactions in a one-dimensional lattice. Using large scale density matrix renormalization group and field theory techniques we explore the atomic and molecular correlations in this low-dimensional setting. We provide compelling evidence for an Ising deconfinement transition occurring between distinct superfluids and extract the Ising order parameter and correlation length of this unusual superfluid transition. This is supported by results for the entanglement entropy which reveal both the location of the transition and critical Ising degrees of freedom on the phase boundary.

RESUMEN

We propose to measure the surface charge accumulating at the interface between a plasma and a dielectric by infrared spectroscopy using the dielectric as a multi-internal reflection element. The surplus charge leads to an attenuation of the transmitted signal from which the magnitude of the charge can be inferred. Calculating the optical response perturbatively in first order from the Boltzmann equation for the electron-hole plasma inside the solid, we can show that in the parameter range of interest a classical Drude term results. Only the integrated surface charge enters, opening up thereby a very efficient analysis of measured data.

RESUMEN

Analytical results for the dielectric function in RPA are derived for three-, two-, and one-dimensional semiconductors in the weakly-degenerate limit. Based on this limit, quantum corrections are derived. Further attention is devoted to systems with linear carrier dispersion and the resulting Dirac-cone physics.

RESUMEN

For a collisionless plasma in contact with a dielectric surface, where with unit probability electrons and ions are, respectively, absorbed and neutralized, thereby injecting electrons and holes into the conduction and valence bands, we study the kinetics of plasma loss by nonradiative electron-hole recombination inside the dielectric. We obtain a self-consistently embedded electric double layer, merging with the quasineutral, field-free regions inside the plasma and the solid. After a description of the numerical scheme for solving the two sets of Boltzmann equations, one for the electrons and ions of the plasma and one for the electrons and holes of the solid, to which this transport problem gives rise to, we present numerical results for a p-doped dielectric. Besides potential, density, and flux profiles, plasma-induced changes in the electron and hole distribution functions are discussed, from which a microscopic view on plasma loss inside the dielectric emerges.

RESUMEN

The effects of strong Coulomb correlations in dense three-dimensional electron-hole plasmas are studied by means of unbiased direct path integral Monte Carlo simulations. The formation and dissociation of bound states, such as excitons and biexcitons, is analyzed and the density-temperature region of their appearance is identified. At high density, the Mott transition to the fully ionized metallic state (electron-hole liquid) is detected. Particular attention is paid to the influence of the hole to electron mass ratio M on the properties of the plasma. Above a critical value of about M=80 formation of a hole Coulomb crystal was recently verified [Bonitz, Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 235006 (2005)] which is supported by additional results. Results are related to the excitonic phase diagram of intermediate valent Tm[Se,Te], where large values of M have been observed experimentally.

RESUMEN

We study the dissipative quantum harmonic oscillator with general nonthermal preparations of the harmonic oscillator bath. The focus is on equilibration of the oscillator in the long-time limit and the additional requirements for thermalization. Our study is based on the exact solution of the microscopic model obtained by means of operator equations of motion, which provides us with the time evolution of the central oscillator density matrix in terms of the propagating function. We find a hierarchy of conditions for thermalization, together with the relation of the asymptotic temperature to the energy distribution in the initial bath state. We discuss the presence and absence of equilibration for the example of an inhomogeneous chain of harmonic oscillators, and we illustrate the general findings about thermalization for the nonthermal environment that results from a quench.

RESUMEN

With an eye on dust particles immersed into an ionized gas, we study the effect of a negative charge on the scattering of light by a dielectric particle with a strong transverse optical phonon resonance in the dielectric constant. Surplus electrons alter the scattering behavior of the particle by their phonon-limited conductivity in the surface layer (negative electron affinity) or in the bulk of the particle (positive electron affinity). We identify a charge-dependent increase of the extinction efficiency for low frequencies, a shift of the extinction resonance above the transverse optical phonon frequency, and a rapid variation of the polarization angles over this resonance. These effects could be used for noninvasive optical measurements of the charge of the particle.

RESUMEN

Holes in a Mott insulator are represented by spinless fermions in the fermion-boson model introduced by Edwards. Although the physically interesting regime is for low to moderate fermion density, the model has interesting properties over the whole density range. It has previously been studied at half-filling in the one-dimensional (1D) case by numerical methods, in particular using exact diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). In the present study the one-particle Green's function is calculated analytically by means of a decoupling scheme for the equations of motion, valid for arbitrary density in 1D, 2D and 3D with fairly large boson energy and zero boson relaxation parameter. The Green's function is used to compute some ground state properties, and the one-fermion spectral function, for fermion densities n = 0.1, 0.5 and 0.9 in the 1D case. The results are generally in good agreement with numerical results obtained using the DMRG and dynamical DMRG, and new light is shed on the nature of the ground state at different fillings. The Green's function approximation is sufficiently successful in 1D to justify future application to the 2D and 3D cases.
