RESUMEN

In this paper, a 53 Gbps widely tunable transmitter is experimentally demonstrated for the first time, to our knowledge. An InGaAlAs/InP multiple-quantum-well (MQW) wafer is used with an identical layer structure for both the V-coupled cavity laser (VCL) and the electro-absorption modulator (EAM). The VCL uses a shallow-etched waveguide to reduce loss, while the EAM uses a deep-etched waveguide to increase the 3-dB modulation bandwidth. With the temperature varying from 19.5 to 30°C, the transmitter achieves wavelength tuning of 42 channels with a spacing of 100 GHz, corresponding to a tuning range of 32.6 nm from 1538.94 to 1571.54 nm. The static extinction ratio (ER) for all channels is higher than 14 dB. The measured 3-dB electro-optic (E0) bandwidth of the transmitter is over 40 GHz, which fits well with the calculated 3-dB bandwidth. At a fixed peak-to-peak driving voltage of 2.4 V, all channels exhibit clearly an open eye diagram with a 53 Gbps non-return-to-zero (NRZ) signal, while the dynamic ER is higher than 4.5 dB.

RESUMEN

We introduced a label-free sensing system based on an array of microring resonators (MRRs) which was successfully employed for human serum albumin (HSA) detection. The sensing-ring surface was functionalized to immobilize anti-HSA, facilitating HSA binding. Our refractive index sensing system demonstrates high sensitivity at 168 nm/RIU and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 63.54 ng/mL, closely comparable to current HSA detection methods. These findings confirm the potential of MRRs as biocompatible sensors for HSA detection. This system holds great promise as an innovative platform for the detection of HSA, carrying significant importance in medical diagnostics.

RESUMEN

Interband cascade lasers (ICLs) are efficient and compact mid-infrared (3-5 µm) light sources with many applications. By enhancing the coupling coefficient and using a type-I ICL wafer, single-mode ICLs were demonstrated based on V-coupled cavity with significantly extended tuning range and with a side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) exceeding 35 dB in continuous wave operation near 3 µm. A V-coupled cavity ICL exhibited a wavelength tuning up to 67 nm at a fixed temperature, and the total tuning range exceeds 210 nm when the heat sink temperature is adjusted from 80 to 180 K. The realization of single-mode in such a wide temperature range with a tuning range exceeding 210 nm verified the advantage of V-coupled cavity ICLs for effective detection of multiple gas species. This is very different from the conventional distributed feedback (DFB) laser where the single-mode operation is restricted to a narrow temperature range, in which the match between the gain peak and the DFB grating period determined wavelength is required. Another V-coupled cavity ICL is tuned over 120 nm from 2997.56 nm to 3117.50 nm with the heat-sink temperature varied from 210 K to 240 K, over 100 K higher than the previously reported maximum operating temperature for V-coupled cavity ICLs.

RESUMEN

This paper is about the V-cavity tunable semiconductor laser with a 1550 nm band used as a transmitter to build a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical fiber communication link. In the experiment, a 20 km optical fiber communication link with a reasonable eye diagram and low bit error rate (BER) transmitted by 40 Gbps can be established. The experimental results show that a single laser can achieve a wavelength tuning range of 25 nm, reach 32 channels at a 100 GHz frequency interval, and the average side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) is above 39 dB. The advantages and application potential of V-cavity tunable semiconductor laser (VCL) for wavelength routing in optical communication networking are verified by experiments.

RESUMEN

An optical-electronic hybrid convolutional neural network (CNN) system is proposed and investigated for its parallel processing capability and system design robustness. It is regarded as a practical way to implement real-time optical computing. In this paper, we propose a complex-valued modulation method based on an amplitude-only liquid-crystal-on-silicon spatial light modulator and a fixed four-level diffractive optical element. A comparison of computational results of convolutions between different modulation methods in the Fourier plane shows the feasibility of the proposed complex-valued modulation method. A hybrid CNN model with one convolutional layer of multiple channels is proposed and trained electrically for different classification tasks. Our simulation results show that this model has a classification accuracy of 97.55% for MNIST, 88.81% for Fashion MNIST, and 56.16% for Cifar10, which outperforms models using only amplitude or phase modulation and is comparable to the ideal complex-valued modulation method.

RESUMEN

We demonstrate a novel, to the best of our knowledge, temperature-insensitive optical sensor based on two cascaded identical microring resonators (CIMRR) in this Letter. The structural parameters of the reference ring and sensing ring are designed to be identical. The upper cladding in the sensing windows of the two rings is removed. With different microfluidic channels, the reference ring and sensing ring are exposed to the reference solution and reagent sample, respectively. For wavelength interrogation experiments in the transmission spectrum contrast ratio and low-cost intensity interrogation experiments, the sensitivities of refractive index (RI) sensing are 3402.4 dB/RIU and 1087.3 dB/RIU, respectively, while the temperature sensitivities are as low as 0.023 dB/K and 0.0124 dB/K, respectively.

RESUMEN

A monolithic 6 × 6 transmitter-router with both port and wavelength switching at sub-nanosecond speed is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Based on an intra-cavity cyclic echelle diffraction grating router (EDGR) and semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) arrays, each selectable output port can realize a selected multi-wavelength laser (MWL) output. The measurement results show that all 36 input-output combinations have a single-mode emission spectrum with a sidemode suppression ratio (SMSR) over 30 dB. Simultaneous switching of six laser wavelengths is achieved together with the switching of the output port by a single electrode selection. The switching time is less than 1 ns. It can offer a cost-effective solution to multi-wavelength multi-port optical transmitter-routers for fast distributed optical switching in datacenters and high-performance computers (HPCs).

RESUMEN

Although receptor status including estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR) and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) of the primary breast tumors was related to the prognosis of breast cancer patients, little information is yet available on whether patient management and survival are impacted by receptor conversion in breast cancer metastases. Using data from the nation-wide multicenter clinical epidemiology study of advanced breast cancer in China (NCT03047889), we report the situation of retesting ER, PR and HER2 status for breast cancer metastases and evaluate the patient management and prognostic value of receptor conversion. In total, 3295 patients were analyzed and 1583 (48.0%) patients retesting receptor status for metastasis. Discordance in one or more receptors between the primary and the metastatic biopsy was found in 37.7% of women. Patients who remained hormone receptor (HR) positive in their metastases had similar progression-free survival of first-line and second-line treatment compared to patients with HR conversion (P > .05). In multivariate analysis, patients who showed ER conversion from negative to positive had longer disease-free survival (DFS) than patients who remained negative in their metastases (hazard ratio, 2.05; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.45-2.90; P < .001). Patients with PR remained positive and had longer DFS than patients with PR conversion from negative to positive (hazard ratio, 0.56; 95% CI, 0.38-0.83; P = .004). Patients with PR conversion have shorter overall survival than patients with PR remained positive or negative (P = .016 and P = .041, respectively). Our findings showed that the receptors' conversions were common in metastatic breast cancer, and the conversion impacted the survival.

RESUMEN

We demonstrate widely tunable single-mode V-coupled-cavity lasers emitting at wavelengths near 3 µm based on a type-II interband cascade (IC) structure. The mode selection is achieved using a half-wave V-coupler designed for the IC structure in the mid-infrared range. The laser waveguides and cavity structure are deeply etched in a single etching step, without any grating. By changing the injection current at a fixed heat-sink temperature, a tuning range over 35 nm can be achieved with a side-mode suppression-ratio up to 28 dB. The tuning range can be extended to 60 nm when combined with the adjustments of the heat-sink temperature.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The benefit of axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) in breast cancer patients with one or two positive sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) remains inconclusive. The purpose of this study was to identify risk factors independently associated with axillary lymph node (ALN) metastasis. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed data from 389 Chinese breast cancer patients with one or two positive SLNs who underwent ALND. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify ALN metastasis-associated risk factors. RESULTS: Among the 389 patients, 174 (44.7%) had ALN metastasis, while 215 (55.3%) showed no evidence of ALN metastasis. Univariate analysis revealed significant differences in age (< 60 or ≥ 60 years), human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (Her-2) status, and the ratio of positive to total SLNs between the ALN metastasis and non-metastasis groups (P < 0.05). The multivariate analysis indicated that age, the ratio of positive to total SLNs, and occupations were significantly different between the two groups. Lastly, younger age (< 60 years), a higher ratio of positive to total SLNs, and manual labor jobs were independently associated with ALN metastasis (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The risk of ALN metastasis in breast cancer patients with one or two positive SLNs can be further increased by younger age, manual labor jobs, and a high ratio of positive to total SLNs. Our findings may also aid in identifying which patients with one or two positive SLNs may not require ALND.

RESUMEN

In this paper, a thermo-optic tuning optical waveguide sensor system based on a cascaded double micro-ring resonator is investigated. The system consists of a micro-ring resonator with the microheater as a reference ring and a micro-ring resonator with removing the upper cladding layers as a sensing ring, combined with a microfluidic control. The refractive index change of the sample is measured by the electric power change of the microheater. The experimental results show that the sensitivity of the thermo-optic tuning is 34.231 W/RIU (refractive index units), and the measurement range is 4.325 × 10-3 RIU, almost eight times larger than that of the cascaded double micro-ring resonator without thermo-optic tuning for the intensity interrogation.

RESUMEN

Multigene panel testing of breast cancer predisposition genes have been extensively conducted in Europe and America, which is relatively rare in Asia however. In this study, we assessed the frequency of germline mutations in 40 cancer predisposition genes, including BRCA1 and BRCA2, among a large cohort of Chinese patients with high hereditary risk of BC. From 2015 to 2016, consecutive BC patients from 26 centers of China with high hereditary risk were recruited (n = 937). Clinical information was collected and next-generation sequencing (NGS) was performed using blood samples of participants to identify germline mutations. In total, we acquired 223 patients with putative germline mutations, including 159 in BRCA1/2, 61 in 15 other BC susceptibility genes and 3 in both BRCA1/2 and non-BRCA1/2 gene. Major mutant non-BRCA1/2 genes were TP53 (n = 18), PALB2 (n = 11), CHEK2 (n = 6), ATM (n = 6) and BARD1 (n = 5). No factors predicted pathologic mutations in non-BRCA1/2 genes when treated as a whole. TP53 mutations were associated with HER-2 positive BC and younger age at diagnosis; and CHEK2 and PALB2 mutations were enriched in patients with luminal BC. Among high hereditary risk Chinese BC patients, 23.8% contained germline mutations, including 6.8% in non-BRCA1/2 genes. TP53 and PALB2 had a relatively high mutation rate (1.9 and 1.2%). Although no factors predicted for detrimental mutations in non-BRCA1/2 genes, some clinical features were associated with mutations of several particular genes.

RESUMEN

We designed and fabricated a silica-based 16×16 cyclic arrayed waveguide grating router (AWGR) with improved channel loss uniformity using a simple mode-field converter composed of a slab coupling region and auxiliary waveguides placed at the interface between the arrayed waveguides and the output star coupler of the AWGR. The mode-field converter transforms the fundamental Gaussian-shaped mode in the arrayed waveguides to a complex mode field which produces a flat-top far field at the image plane of the output star coupler. It does not change the overall construction of the AWGR and does not increase the device size. The experimental results show that loss non-uniformity for a 16×16 AWGR with 1.6 nm wavelength channel spacing is reduced from 3 to 0.5 dB after adapting the mode-field converter, and the crosstalk is improved by about 2 dB.

RESUMEN

We demonstrate a temperature-insensitive waveguide sensor based on a silicon-on-insulator platform. The sensor consists of a ring resonator and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). A free spectral range of the sensing ring is designed to be slightly different from that of the MZI; hence, the Vernier effect can be employed to improve sensitivity. By optimizing structural parameters of the MZI, the envelope peak position of a cascaded transmission spectrum can be immune to the temperature variation, and only dependent on analyte change in the sensing area. The experimental results show that bulk refractive index (RI) sensitivity of the proposed sensor is 3552 nm/RI unit, while its temperature sensitivity is less than 4 pm/K, which is two orders of magnitude smaller than the conventional cascaded sensor structure without temperature compensation. The proposed temperature-insensitive waveguide sensor does not need polymer cladding or extra thermal stabilization, making it more robust in practical applications.

RESUMEN

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a widely tunable coupled-cavity semiconductor laser based on a novel half-wave bow-tie coupler. The laser comprises two resonate cavities connected through the bow-tie coupler consisting of two back-to-back corner reflectors connected with a short waveguide, which produces a half-wave cross-coupling phase with an optimum coupling coefficient for achieving high mode selectivity. No complex grating or multiple epitaxial growth is needed. By tuning a single electrode at a fixed temperature, 29.6 nm wavelength tuning covering 38 channels with 100 GHz frequency spacing is achieved experimentally, with a side-mode suppression ratio of over 35 dB.

RESUMEN

We propose a highly-sensitive temperature sensor employing a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. The waveguide widths in the two MZI arms are tailored to have different temperature sensitivities but nearly the same group refractive indices. A temperature sensor with an enhanced sensitivity of larger than 438pm/°C is experimentally demonstrated, which is over seven times larger than that of conventional silicon optical temperature sensor (about 60pm/°C for quasi-TM mode). Moreover, the sensor is easy to fabricate, only by a single mask, and no need of any polymer cladding, which makes it more robust, and can be used in lab-on-chip systems as a temperature monitor.

RESUMEN

Plasma cell mastitis (PCM) is a chronic mastitis with limited treatment options and common recurrence. A histopathological hallmark of PCM is the infiltration of numerous plasma cells surrounding the mammary duct. Our previous study showed that the activity of the IL-6/STAT3 signaling pathway was elevated in patients with PCM. However, the etiology of PCM remains largely unclear. In this study, we sought to explore the effects of IL-6/JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway in the pathogenesis of PCM. Histological analysis showed that the mammary glands of mice that received human breast tissue homogenates, followed by an injection of IL-6, exhibited features of PCM similar to human PCM. The IL-6/JAK2/STAT3 signaling activity was significantly elevated and Bcl-2 was highly expressed in CD138 + plasma cells in the mammary glands of mice with PCM. Furthermore, treatment with AG-490, an inhibitor of JAK family kinases, suppressed activation of the IL-6/JAK2/STAT3 signaling cascade, in turn resulting in a decreased number of plasma cells in the mammary gland and reversing the pathogenesis of PCM. Taken together, our study indicated that a PCM mouse model was successfully established through activation of the IL-6/JAK2/STAT3 pathway by injecting IL-6 into the mammary gland of mouse that had received homogenates of human breast tissue. Thus, the IL-6/JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway plays a critical role in orchestrating the pathogenesis of PCM.

RESUMEN

Lysine glutarylation is new type of protein acylation modification in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. To better understand the molecular mechanism of glutarylation, it is important to identify glutarylated substrates and their corresponding glutarylation sites accurately. In this study, a novel bioinformatics tool named GlutPred is developed to predict glutarylation sites by using multiple feature extraction and maximum relevance minimum redundancy feature selection. On the one hand, amino acid factors, binary encoding, and the composition of k-spaced amino acid pairs features are incorporated to encode glutarylation sites. And the maximum relevance minimum redundancy method and the incremental feature selection algorithm are adopted to remove the redundant features. On the other hand, a biased support vector machine algorithm is used to handle the imbalanced problem in glutarylation sites training dataset. As illustrated by 10-fold cross-validation, the performance of GlutPred achieves a satisfactory performance with a Sensitivity of 64.80%, a Specificity of 76.60%, an Accuracy of 74.90% and a Matthew's correlation coefficient of 0.3194. Feature analysis shows that some k-spaced amino acid pair features play the most important roles in the prediction of glutarylation sites. The conclusions derived from this study might provide some clues for understanding the molecular mechanisms of glutarylation.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Limited information is available regarding the correlations between mammographic calcifications and the epidemiological features of patients with breast cancer living different lifestyles in Western China. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between mammographic calcifications and the epidemiological characteristics of female patients with breast cancer in Western China. METHODS: This was a hospital-based, retrospective, multi-center epidemiological study of patients with breast cancer. Using the Western China Clinical Cooperation Group (WCCCG) database, we obtained the records of 7317 patients (with mammographic data) diagnosed with breast cancer between March 2011 and June 2016. These patients were divided into Groups I (mass alone) and II (mass combined with calcification), and their clinical and pathological data were compared. RESULTS: A total of 4211 patients were enrolled in Group I, and 3106 patients were enrolled in Group II. The tumors in Group II were more likely to be larger (P < 0.0001), higher grade (P = 0.0029), estrogen receptor (ER)+/progesterone receptor (PR)- (P = 0.0319), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER-2)-positive (P < 0.0001), and to have axillary lymph node metastasis (P = 0.0033) than those in Group I. Regarding treatment, patients in Group II were more likely to have undergone chemotherapy (P = 0.0108) and anti-HER2 therapy (P = 0.0102), whereas patients in Group I were more likely to have undergone endocrine therapy (P < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, mammographic calcifications in tumors were associated with distinct clinicopathologic characteristics and aggressive treatments.

RESUMEN

We analyze the impact of aberration on spectral performance of silicon-based arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) router with the conventional design using a constant pitch along the grating circle for the array waveguides near the free propagation region (FPR), and simulation results show that due to existence of large aberration, side lobes occur in spectral responses of peripheral output channels for the center input light while more serious side lobes appear in most output channels within a free spectral range (FSR) for the edge channel input. Therefore, there is a high crosstalk in conventional N × N silicon AWG, which is very detrimental for router applications. In order to address it, a simple design with a constant projected period on a line tangent to the grating at its pole for the array waveguides near the FPR is proposed, and aberrations of all output wavelengths within a FSR are kept at a rather low level both for the center and edge input. Then we fabricate two kinds of AWG routers with the conventional and proposed design respectively on a SOI wafer, and experimental results show that spectral responses of the AWG router with the proposed design are significantly improved compared to those obtained in the conventional design, especially for the edge channel input.
