RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The family planning component of postabortion care (PAC) is critical, as it helps women to prevent unintended pregnancies and reduce future incidence of life-threatening unsafe abortion. In Tanzania, PAC was recently decentralized from tertiary-level district hospitals to primary health care dispensaries in four regions of the country. This analysis describes interventions used to improve access to high quality PAC services during decentralization; examines results and factors that contribute to PAC clients' voluntary uptake of contraception; and develops recommendations for improving postabortion contraceptive services. METHODS: This analysis uses service delivery statistics of 18,688 PAC clients compiled from 120 facilities in Tanzania between 2005 and 2014. RESULTS: This study suggests that efforts to integrate postabortion family planning into treatment for incomplete abortion contributed to higher postabortion contraceptive uptake (86%). Results indicate that variables associated with significant differences in contraceptive uptake were facility level, age, gestational age at the time of treatment, and uterine evacuation technology used. CONCLUSION: The experience of expanding PAC services in Tanzania suggests that integrating contraceptive services with treatment for abortion complications can increase family planning use.

RESUMEN

Fast-acting temperature-sensitive (ts) mutations are powerful conditional tools for studying transient cellular processes such as cytokinesis. Fast-acting ts cytokinesis-defective mutants are functional at the permissive temperature; yet show a fully penetrant loss-of-function cytokinesis failure phenotype when upshifted to the restrictive temperature. Fast-acting ts mutations thus allow functional tunability and rapid and reversible protein inactivation by simply shifting the temperature at precise times throughout cell division. In this chapter, we describe several techniques and discuss various approaches for harnessing the power of fast-acting ts mutants to study cytokinesis in Caenorhabditis elegans using both simple passive heat transfer and more advanced fluidic-based thermal control systems. We also provide detailed protocols for standard dissection, mounting, and imaging of early worm embryos.

RESUMEN

Post mortem examination of a dog that died after a spell of respiratory distress revealed about 20 randomly distributed cystic lesions in the lungs. Those examined each harboured 2 light-brownish conical flukes approximately 10 mm in length. Histopathological examination of such a lesion revealed the presence of Paragonimus (lung fluke) embedded in it. The parasite had a typical spiny integument as well as other characteristics typical for the genus. Typical pigmented operculated eggs were embedded in the surrounding tissues. The life cycle of the parasite is briefly discussed.

RESUMEN

El Niño is well known to affect marine fishery. The Southern Oscillation, however, may also have a strong effect on riverine fish production in flood-plains via its effect on river discharge. In years with high river discharges larger parts of the floodplain are innundated, increasing the surface area of suitable nursery grounds for young fish stock. In this way high river discharges are thought to have a positive effect on fish production, while low discharges are thought to have a negative effect. The collapse of the sábalo fishery in the Pilcomayo River in Bolivia, for instance, can be attributed to the 1990-1995 El Niño event and subsequent overexploitation of the fish stocks.
